SILVANA SIN LANA – JUEVES – Parte 1 de 2

We again see the beginning of the ridiculous scene with Andrés, the very nice TA at Lucha’s college, waiting outside the dark and empty former mansion of Los Villaseñor. María José appears on the street. He asks why she lied about being inside getting ready. She makes up a big story about her parents separating and her car being in the shop. He swallows this story whole. She says she’s not up for the concert [because she can’t go inside to change clothes; and why didn’t she wear the right outfit from home anyway]. She takes a cab home.

Jorge stops by to tell Angie that there’s a long list to get into the charter school he attends. He then tells Silvana that she should speak with Manuel, since he’s on some committee at the school, about getting the younger girls into the school. Just then MJ comes inside. Her mother wants to know where she got the money for a taxi. Trini says she gave it to her because she understands her granddaughter, who comes a close second to she, Trini, in suffering this lowered station in life.

Some big plastic hook comes out of the wall in Jorge’s room. There’s a hole now that goes right into Angie’s room. He spies on her a bit (fully clothed).

Silvana is putting out packing boxes when Manuel arrives home. He tells her it’s not the right pickup day and she might get a fine if she leaves the boxes in the street. She’s quite short with him and then almost falls down. He catches her; they get close; and I see a spark there. He tells her she has porcelain skin. She tells him she wants to start over – from zero – and put all the bad things behind them. He is happy to do so and introduces himself as if they’d just met. She introduces herself as Chivis. He tells her that’s very fresa but she says it’s a nickname for either Silvia or Silvana [news to me].

After they spend some time dragging the packing boxes back up her driveway, she asks him a favor, if it wouldn’t be a problem for him, to try to get her girls enrolled in the school his boys attend. He’s more than happy to help.

The insufferable girlfriend of Jorge is right in the Living Room when he comes downstairs. She’s come to rag on him about helping the girls [specifically Angie, of course] get into the charter school. He manages to calm her down by saying she’s the only one he loves.

Angie tells Chivis that she’ll help her put together a resumé. She goes on to tell her mother about some resumé padding that is common.

The scenes at the pescadería don’t do a thing for me. They appear to involve the broadest slapstick. No one works. [Of course this is the norm in telenovelas; I keep forgetting that.] Two, count ém, two men go outside during working hours and fall on their knees to pray to the Virgencita. [And don’t get me started on the stereotypical Dominique, the gay guy.]

Manuel offers to pick up Silvana and take her to the meeting at the school. Just as he hangs up Stella motors up with a ghastly SEXY tank top on. She wants him to cancel the meeting at the school in case it makes him late to her big dinner with the family. She throws in a concern that he might be meeting with female teachers.

SILVANA SIN LANA – JUEVES – Parte 2 de 2

At the school, the principal talks up the credentials of the school, while Manuel talks up Silvana and her daughters. The girls are in! Silvana thanks Manuel profusely.

The youngest girl, Lupita, is talking over the fence to the youngest boy, Pedrito. They’re getting along fine when Trini interrupts them, inventing a cold for Lupita to get her away from a kid she thinks is lower class.

At the university Lucha has lost her coin purse and is rummaging through her handbag. She needs the coins to take the bus. Andrés offers her a ride home. They are outside her house talking in his car in a friendly way. Lupita sees this and drags María José to the windown. MJ calls Lucha una zorra.

We see Stella dressing up in a conservative, dark dress. Dominique, a stereotypically flamboyant gay guy, doesn’t like the dress.

The sun has set. Manuel and Chivis are in his truck outside their respective houses. Apparently she’s told him most of what happened. She says that from one day to the next they were almost in the street. He apologizes for having behaved badly the day of the accident. They laugh a bit about how they met. She starts to cry and says the worst of it all is having to keep up a brave front for the girls, even though she herself feels terrible. He offers her his shoulder to cry on, saying it’s well tested by raising four children.

Stella, of course, looms up out of nowhere and behaves like the fishwife she hopes to become. Chivis behaves with dignity, saying she thinks it’s poor manners to yell at another person in the street. She goes inside. Just like his son Jorge soothed the savage beast earlier, Manuel calms Stella down. She asks how he likes the dress she’s wearing. He tells her he likes her better without anything on!

Sin Senos

well Catalina (now 18) crossed the yellow line, and now Cata, Hilda, Albeiro, and her boyfriend Hernán are all in separate jails, (thanks to a scuffle Daniela caused) and according to Yesica they will all get a proper welcome, Cata will be a well trained call girl when she gets out, Gato says he is no longer interested in the brat, that is unless she gets a good boob job.

Senora Acero 3

is not slowing down at all (my favorite) I didn't see the second season and so I am waffling through those tie-ins but loving Vincenta with Daniel hot on her trail while she is up to her eyelashes in bad guys, (but they haven't revealed why yet), everyone had thought she had died 8 years ago and her mother Edelmira (played by Laura Flores, love her) who is two steps from being dead from cancer and was shot tonight but is still moving, won't tell Vicenta who her dad was, but please don't lose the bag she has with her.

this show reminds me of "Camelia la Texana" (Luis Ernesto Franco was so cool in this one), where the good cop tries to save the not-so-bad girl, but for now in our story Daniel thinks all those well armed narco types are her guys, and that she is a very dangerous lady, not to mention earlier, she spooked his horse and got away from him.

with "el Chema" promos out there, this will most likely be a short one.

Silvana

Novelera, I loved your recap! It cited so many of the things that drive me nuts about this novela as well, such as all the scenes at the Fish Market (they do nothing for me either--I think even now I'm mentally fast-forwarding through them), and the stereotypic presentation of Dominique, the gay guy. It reminds me a bit of the portrayal of Ro, the flamboyantly gay guy in Marido en Alquiler. But that portrayal had more depth to it, I think, though it, too, was often absurdly over the top.

Overall, I kept having the feeling last night that things were moving too fast. Perhaps I jinxed things yesterday by saying that I appreciated the fact that Telemundo novelas usually resolve problems quickly, they don't drag them out for weeks on end. But come on, we're only three episodes into the novela and already Manuel and Silvana are getting along very well, in spite of the fact that she crashed into his truck, blamed him, and paid for the damages with a check that bounced. And, of course, when Silvana fell down, she and Manuel exchange "the look" that we saw between Carlos and Adela in Bajo and Pablo and Eva in Eva. I assume that, as with Pablo and Eva, an early "look" will be followed by weeks of an on-again-off-again problematic relationship, but somehow in Silvana everything just seems too rushed.

There were things I liked about last night's episode, especially Silvana's telling Manuel that what she finds most difficult is having to put up a good face in front of her children even though she's hurting inside. That admission gave more depth to her character, and gave us added insight into a scene a bit later on when she embraces two of her daughters and appears to be very happy and upbeat.

Anyway, in spite of my reservations, I'm pretty sure I'll continue to watch this novela. Like you, I want to watch something, and this one seems to meet my needs better than Senos or Señora Acero. I'm especially glad that others here on our page have also expressed interest in this novela. I'm hopeful we'll have some good discussions.

Señora Acero

Many thanks, deb, for posting your comments about these two novelas. I especially appreciated your mini-mini-recap of Señora Acero. I've decided I can't watch two novelas, and the 8 pm time slot appeals to me a lot more than 10 pm. If the time slots were reversed, I'd probably choose to watch this one. Thanks, too, for pointing out that the mother is played by Laura Flores. I've loved her in several other novelas, and I was pretty sure I recognized her here, even though she looked a lot older than in the others. [Then again, when I look in the mirror, an older woman stares back at me.]

Silvana

Novelera, thanks for the delightful and concise recap.

Will someone do recaps for every episode? I know it is asking for a lot.

Does anyone know how I can write Telemundo to ask them how to get English closed captions on the Telemundo Now app on my TV? Is there an address? I don't have a Facebook account, so I can't send them a message via that channel. I think having English captions would broaden the audience for their telenovelas. (The same thing goes for Univision/Televisa telenovelas)

Silvana

@Gobluefan: On the Telemundo website, I found a way to contact Telemundo Now. Go to http://now.telemundo.com/. You'll see a black strip across the top of the page. On the right-hand side, there's the word ENTRA, and to the right of that there's three horizontal bars (a menu symbol). If you click on that symbol, a menu will open up, and the second item in the menu is Contáctanos (Contact Us). Click on that and a box will pop up where you can tell them what the problem is. The only difficulty may be that it is in Spanish. I'm not sure what happens if you answer the sections in English, but it's worth a try.

Silvana

@Gobluefan: right now it's hard to say how often recaps will appear. For the previous novela, novelera wrote a recap every Monday and often on Thursday. I wrote one every Tuesday and occasionally on Friday. Deb wrote one on Wednesday (and she recapped a different novela every Tuesday and Thursday). However, I think deb may not be watching Silvana. It's hard to know at this point who will be available. I recapped the opening episode of Silvana on Tuesday and am willing to do a recap every Tuesday. Novelera did one last night. I have no idea what her plans are for the coming weeks. I'm willing to do a recap of tonight's episode. It would be great if other people would volunteer for days that aren't covered.

SILVANA:

GoBlueFan- If you absolutely needs a Silvana recap, Kat/5 Ft. Latina is doing them: http://5ftlatina.com/cohete/

Silvana. Delightful recap, novelera! I really missed your clever snark and humor when you were away for a week and then catching up. I like the way you spot inconsistencies, like María José not wearing the right outfit for a concert. Also loved the remark about not actually working in the workplace being "the norm in telenovelas." Also: "Just like his son Jorge soothed the savage beast earlier." I too agree about the stereotypical gay character Dominique. I don't thing they could get away with something like that on English-language tv. I was wrong about María José. She is still lying to Andrés about her address and family situation. I wonder how long she can keep that up, especially now that Lucha and Andrés are friendly. Jorge is very sweet and Angie is very ethical about not making a play for a guy who has a girl friend. Still, even though Angie is fully clothed, it was a bit creepy that Jorge was spying on her. I was very impressed by how sophisticated Angie was about job searches. Does palanca or "pull" (which I know as enchufe)for charter school entrance really work that well in the U.S.? Maybe only in some places? I know I taught about the concept when I used to teach Business Spanish. Someone makes a remark about Lady Gaga in Stella's presence--and she does look just a little bit like Lady Gaga. She disqualified herself as a legitimate novia when she made that scene in the street. I noticed that the charter school principal was worried about standardized test scores. Manuel was very witty and sweet when Silvana told him her whole story. The graphics on this show are very cute!

SILVANA:

Thank you for the great recap, Novelera! I still have not watched any of the episodes. Seems like things are moving quite quickly with the protagonists and their families. I'll have to see if I can catch a glimpse of the show this weekend. Thanks again!

Thanks everyone for your help. I did write Telemundo and got a quick reply about English captions. This is what they wrote:

"Thanks for your email, but unfortunately, when they did the website overhaul last year, they left only the shows only with Spanish CC. They’ve been telling us for months that they’re eventually going to put the English back on, but there is no actual target date."

Silvana

Thanks, all, for the kind remarks. Juanita, you and I have a Vulcan mind-meld. I was thinking the same thing last night. Wow, this relationship between Silvana and Manuel is going far too well for it to last.

SpanProf, ITA about Angie resisting her attraction to Jorge because he has a girlfriend already. And it was creepy his peering through a hole in the wall. BTW, that wall was about one inch thick. This reminds me of some scandals in Miami after Hurricane Andrew. Scammers posing as legitimate builders did lots of sub-standard repairs.

I also enjoy the graphics. They're very well done.

@gobluefan from OH: Your online name fascinates me. Is that a blue fan as in a fan of Michigan? I was born in OH and lived there until the age of 24. Does your online name mean you're not a fan of the Buckeyes? My son was born in Ohio and has lived in either AZ or CA ever since, but he calls himself a Buckeye!

Silvana

Novelara,

I am a Michigan fan living in the heart of Ohio (specifically, Worthington, a suburb of Columbus). My wife worked and is now retired from Ohio State.

I attended Cornell University for graduate school, then worked for many years at the Univ. of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. Hence, my love for UM. We attend both OSU and (some) Michigan football games, but when there is a date conflict, Michigan wins out. We do not consider ourselves Buckeye fans, even though we have season tickets to OSU football games.

Silvana

thanks so much novelera!

Carlos Ponce was in the first novela I ever saw and is still going strong, love his quick wit.

"Stella, behaves like the fishwife she hopes to become" lol

what a neat word Fresa (Spanish for strawberry)
and Chivis, did Silvana say it was because of her eyes, cat like.

according to the cast list the girls names are,
María José 'Majo' Villaseñor
María de los Ángeles 'Angie' Villaseñor
María Guadalupe 'Lupita' Villaseñor

Silvana

@gobluefan from OH: Ok, you could not possibly be a native-born Ohio person and root for Michigan. I have two football loyalties: the Buckeyes and Stanford since I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. They haven't played each other much in recent years so I don't have to suffer. I have the same quandary regarding an ingrained affection for the Cleveland Indians. It makes me absurdly happy they're in first place in their division, even though I'm happy to be a Giants fan.

My wife and I were both born in San Francisco. We root for the SF Giants and SF 49ers. Ohio professional teams suck, but that is all you can see on TV around Columbus.

Silvana

Wasn't Carlos Ponce in all those Spanish language commercials for State Farm insurance a few years ago?

Silvana

Forgot to mention, I got my BA at the Univ. of California, Berkeley, so we are natural rivals of the Stanford "Indians/Cardinals/Trees".

Silvana

Yes, Gobluefan, Carlos Ponce was in those Spanish-language State Farm commercials. And Alberto Mateo, whom I knew only as the devilish guy in Allstate commercials urging people to avoid disaster by buying Allstate, suddenly showed up as a porn film maker in a moderately recent novela on Telemundo, Dueños del paraíso. I had a hard time thinking of him as anyone but the mala suerte guy in the commercials. Recently I think I've seen Aarón Diaz in some commercial or other on Telemundo. He was Santiago, the younger brother in Santa Diabla (and Carlos Ponce played his older brother).

SILVANA:

Silvana= Chivis

Nicknames in Spanish, like in English, are usually shortened and diminutive versions of real names. It's common in Spanish that in nicknames the 's', 'c', 'z', 'x' sounds becomes 'ch' in the shortened version of the full name.

Silvana--Silvi--Chivis
Jesus--Sus--Chuy
Salvador--Salva--Chava
Vicente--Cente--Chente
Jose Maria--SeMa--Chema
Maria Jesus--MariSu--Marichuy
Ignacio--Nacio--Nacho
Isabela--Sabela--Chabela
Graciela--Ciela--Chela

Silvana

Many thanks, Vivi, for this very helpful info about Spanish nicknames. It's all new to me.

SILVANA

You're welcome, Juanita. I love this kind of stuff! As you likely guessed, Chivis is also the nickname for Silvia.

Now, if anybody can tell me how Dick became a nickname for Richard, Bob for Robert, Ted for Edward, I would be grateful. :)

SILVANA

I have a huge crush on Mañuel already. I agree with the others who said that the two main characters are getting along far too well, far too quickly. Chivis's husband-on-the-lam seems much older and far less attractive than herself. If I were her, I'd be all about that Mañuel (but I may be slightly biased) Her mom Trini is a pill and needs a reality check. Angie is an absolute Saint! I don't like that she's getting spied on. Actually, it'll be all three girls getting spied on since they share that room. Ick!

Silvana

Gobluefan- Telemundo is currently posting this show (but I think only the first segment of each day) with english captions here,

https://www.youtube.com/user/telemundoenglish

scroll to the bottom, created playlists.
(wow, the first video in that string is a tour of the studio)

Silvana

Thanks so much, Vivi. I had never, ever heard the nickname Chivis. In fact, when heard the word first I thought it was some new vocabulary word. But I didn't take time to look it up in the online dictionary! All the other nicks are familiar to me. In fact I work with a Graciela who goes by Chela.

Silvana

Thanks for the recaps! Sorry I'm not able to recap this one for the moment, but I might be able to later in August once things settle down a bit for me. I've only watched two episodes so far and I like it. It's good to have a comedy to watch again after Esclava Blanca.

And thanks for the Spanish nickname info, Vivi. I hadn't learned those before. As for English, some nicknames start with n because in Old English people would say meen (my) before the name and the n got carried over. For others, it was due to swapping out a letter (usually l or d for r) or adding a consonant before a vowel to create rhyming nicknames, which was common in the Middle Ages.

Silvana

I had hoped to have tonight's recap done before I went to bed, but as usual it will be ready tomorrow morning.

Silvana

J, as you know, I loved your Esclava recaps. It would be wonderful if at some point you found yourself able to do recaps for Silvana.

Sin Senos

Catica was dead for half the show, her new girlfriend/cellmate not liking rejection put her in a big washing machine where she drowned, so they carried her around the prison to the infirmary where they tried some cpr, nope, so it's a ride around town to the hospital and those big paddles that even work through your clothes, whew, "it's alive", could it be the doc will help her?

Hilda has a friend at her prison, they pray for Catica.

Albeiro has a friend at his prison, they also pray, as Alberio tells him his situation, they wonder if someone is trying to make him disappear.

Hernan has no friends where he is, he's down in a hole where they spray water on him, except for Daniela who comes with her mother to get him out, she wants to own him, but he doesn't buy in which queers the deal and upsets Yesica.

back when Yesica was on good terms with Catica's family she had their house painted black, since they have all been in jail it's been looted, but now they are not on good terms she sends some people over to tear it down, well just kind of take what's left, like the doors and windows, etc, and trash the rest.

Jota and Catica's 2 girl friends go to the police to complain, now they're in trouble, he gets a ticket for the air pressure in his tires since everything else is fine, and a brick through his window telling him to butt out.

Yesica takes her mother to a judge ?? to file a formal complaint, for the 3, not Hernan because Daniela wants to play with him, the judge must now investigate the other side of the story but a wad of money may have convinced him to skip that part.

Yesica had her guys find Cata sr. marriage certificate at the house but her yes man's trip to town hall shows it was a copy, hmm, where is the original?

Senora Acero

I'm getting hook on this one!

Vicenta's mom (Laura Flores, what a great actress) dying of cancer and a bullet wound in her gut makes it through another show, well almost, there will be no american dream for her, she tells Vicenta who her father is, Vicente Acero, the guy that Sara married, the day he was killed.

earlier, Vicenta causes one of the bad guys cars chasing her to crash, Daniel coming behind puts his cop light on the roof scaring away the other guys, and Vicenta easily loses him, but since she is headed to the border, he calls for backup, monitored by his partner, who is working with the bad guys, Vicenta, Daniel, and his partner with a bad guy, all arrive at the point where she is going to cross.

meanwhile the young guy and kid who were kidnapped by Indio escape the drug factory with a backpack full of dynamite, they too are headed for the border chased by motos, dogs, and Indio himself, nobody makes me look bad says the 2 finger guy.

and there is all this other stuff going on from the earlier shows.

anyone watching this?

SILVANA SIN LANA - VIERNES - Parte 1 de 3

Stella is at the dinner table with Manuel and his children. The kids are very obviously unenthusiastic. Pepito asks whether she is his father's novia. Stella wants Manuel to answer, but Manuel can only hem and haw, so finally Stella answers "Yes, we're novios and we care a lot for each other." Pepito then asks, "Are you going to get married?" Manuel is even more tongue tied than before. Stella replies, "Your father hasn't asked me yet." She then adds, "Everything in its time" (todo a su tiempo). Manuel seizes upon this as a good answer. At one point, Stella refers to the three kids as "los niños," and Lucha takes exception to this. She then leaves the table, saying she has to study. Stella goes after her to have a "woman-to-woman talk." Lucha tells her that no one is going to replace her mother.

The scene shifts to the bedroom that Maria José, Angie, and Lupita share. Maria José is upset that she can't get a good phone connection and that she hasn't heard from Andrés. Angie tells her it wasn't a good idea to lie to him.

Maria José goes outside and finally reaches Andrés. He tells her he hasn't been in touch because he's been very busy preparing his classes. She shifts into perra mode, asking, "Don't you think your classes are taking too much of your time? Or perhaps you've been distracted by one of your students who's flirting with you?" They argue back and forth. Yadda yadda yadda.

Vincente, too, is outside, and he has heard part of the conversation. He asks whether she'd like to go out with him. She tells him of course not, she has a novio. Vincente replies, "a novio who is with someone else and isn't telling you." Maria José is silent for a few seconds, and then says "I'll go upstairs, put on something really gorgeous, and we'll go (yo creo que subo, me pongo guaperrima, bajo, y nos vamos).

Silvana calls Rafael, her lawyer. Getting up her courage, she asks whether he could recommend her for a job. Sure, he says. Come by my office tomorrow.

Manuel is walking Stella to her car after dinner. They kiss, say goodbye, and then Stella sees Silvana on her balcony. Stella immediately runs back to Manuel and kisses him again. A long kiss. She then drives off. Manuel catches sight of Silvana on the balcony. She thanks him for all he has done for her. She adds that "Stella must care a lot for you because she became jealous when she saw me."

Stella arrives home and Dominique rushes out to greet her: "Tell me all!" Their discussion ends with his giving her a foot massage.

Angie is in her pajamas when there's a knock at the door. It's Jorge. He suggests that perhaps all of them could walk together to school the next day. That would be great, says Angie, but won't Margarita object? Jorge says they've been having their problems lately, and there are other little things as well. He may be finding someone else attractive. "What would you do if you were me?" he asks Angie. The wise and straightforward Angie replies, "It's better that you tell her than lie to her. And it's better that she find out from you than from someone else."

SILVANA SIN LANA - VIERNES - Parte 2 de 3

Vincente has taken Maria José to a bar or club where there's dancing. Maria José [MJ to save space] feels uncomfortable in what is apparently an unfamiliar environment and wants to leave. Vincente instead starts dancing with her. Ponchito is there, and Vincente introduces her to him. She has a lot to drink. She admits to him that she had a prejudice against la gente naca, but she's finding she likes them, they're adorable. While she's sitting with Vincente at a small table, she gets a text message from Andrés. She texts back that she was sleeping and he woke her up. She'll talk to him tomorrow. Vincente knows she's lying: "I caught you" (te caché), he tells her. They dance again, and they kiss. A looooong kiss. Suddenly, she pushes him away, slaps him, and says she wants to go home.

MJ quietly enters her house and tries to go upstairs without being seen, but her mother is waiting up for her. "Where were you?" Silvana asks. MJ replies with one improbable lie after another. Finally, she admits that she went out with Vincente.

In the morning, Jorge and Pepito meet up with Angie and Lupita outside the house to go to school together. However, Margarita the Zorra arrives, gives Jorge a kiss, and proceeds to make fun of the previous school's uniforms that Angie and Lupita are wearing (they've explained that they don't yet have the charter school's uniforms). Lupita is quite upset, but Pepito assures her that he'll protect her.

Don Benito, the neighborhood baker, comes with a gift for "Señora Trini." He asks her to call him Benito. They continue to talk, and he asks her why she has moved here. She tells the same sorts of lies that MJ has told to Andrés. The move is only temporary (coyuntural); there was a fire in their house in Coral Gables, and it is now being renovated. He asks whether her daughter has a husband. Oh yes, is her reply, he's an international businessman. And her daughter is an executive in a bank. [Trini has apparently been a role model for her lying granddaughter MJ.]

Silvana meets Rafael in his office to talk about his recommending her for a job. He has one in mind: secretary. She's a bit nervous, because the office is filled with lawyers and she has no experience. Not to worry, Rafael assures her, you'll be my personal secretary and I'll teach you what you need to know. [One of the things she'll need to know is how to deal with his hands, which first push back some of her hair and then briefly caress her cheek.]

At the university, Lucha and Andrés sit at a small table and talk. She's unhappy about Stella's possibly coming into their lives. He says that her father has the right to remake his life. She talks about her mother, who wanted to live but died when Pepito was only two years old. She starts to cry. He offers her his cloth handkerchief [a la Pablo Contreras]. And of course, that's the signal for MJ to appear. She's furious. She warns Lucha that Andrés is her novio and not to mess with him--or else. Lucha leaves, and MJ turns to/on Andrés with the question/accusation ¿te gusta?. He explains, "She's my student and she was telling me something sad." MJ replies, "If you'd like, we can buy her a diary to which she can tell her problems."

At the charter school, the teacher calls the roll, and when she gets to Maria Guadalupe Villaseñor, the class laughs at the long name. The teacher tells them there's no reason to laugh. Lupita then raises her hand and asks whether they are going to pray [as they did in her previous school]. The class laughs again. The teacher explains that the charter school is secular, and it doesn't include prayers.

SILVANA SIN LANA - VIERNES - Parte 3 de 3

In the school courtyard at recess, things go from bad to worse. Margarita the Zorra [MZ] makes fun of Lupita. Both Angie and Pepito come to her defense, but Lupita is miserable.

At the fish market, Manuel tells Vincente not to continue seeing MJ: "Her family are our neighbors, and if any problems arise, they're mine." Vincente objects to his father telling him what to do.

Silvana returns home from her meeting with Rafael and tells Trini that she has a job as a secretary. Trini is horrified. "Your father and I spent a fortune on your education, and this is what you do with it?" Silvana replies that it's a respectable occupation, and they need the money. She shows her mother the uniform she'll be wearing. Trini is even more horrified. [Even I am scratching my head: why does Silvana have to wear a uniform to be a secretary?]

The girls return unhappy from school. Lupita wants to go back to her previous school. Silvana tries to reassure her that things will get better.

Jorge comes by with a charter school uniform that his sister no longer needs. Angie is welcome to it if she'd like. Trini is once again horrified. "Used clothes! Oh my god!" (¡Ropa usada. Dios mio!). Angie thanks Jorge for thinking of her. "How could I not?" he replies.

MJ is lying in wait for Lucha as she comes home. Lucha tells her she has to study. "Oh, you study," replies MJ. "I thought you went to flirt with your professors." MJ calls her insecto and warns her again to leave Andrés alone. Lucha tells her "I pity you, because you're scared to death that Andrés will drop you because you live here" (Me das lástima, porque estás muerta de miedo que Andrés te patee por vivir aquí). She advises MJ to stop lying to Andrés.

MJ goes inside and rushes up the stairs without saying anything to her family. She finally greets them sarcastically and continues to her room. Silvana goes to talk with her and asks what's wrong. MJ offers her a list: I lost my house, my car, my friends, and I'm sure I'm going to lose Andrés. Silvana replies that everyone has suffered losses, not just her. Moreover, Silvana is sure that Andrés is a good person who cares for her, but not if she continues to lie to him. MJ asks why she is on her case. Silvana reminds her that she has lied to her, gone out without permission, come home drunk, and isn't going to the university. MJ tells her she doesn't want to go to the university, she doesn't want her mother's support, and she doesn't want her watching over her. She goes out the door, and mentions one more loss on her list: I lost my father. End of episode.

Silvana. Excellent, complete recap, Juanita. I especially liked "One if the things she'll need to know is how to deal with his hands." Yep, it's obvious Rafael's intentions aren't honorable, and Silvana got that job just a bit too easily. Why on earth did Silvana send the girls to school in their old uniform? Civvies would have been preferable. Margarita is downright cruel to Lupita on the playground, and has just forfeited any sympathy from viewerville when Jorge breaks up with her. Maria Jose of course is acting like a total jerk and deserves to lose Andres. At 22, she is likely close to graduation, and with her university tuition paid for the rest of the year, and a practical major like hotel administration, the sensible thing to do would be to finish and get a job in her specialty--after all, she's bilingual and Florida is a mecca for Latin American tourists. But of course, instead, MJ just wants to feel sorry for herself.

Silvana

Many thanks, SpanProf, for your gratifying and very interesting response. Yes, Rafael's intentions were broadcast loud and clear (but perhaps not yet loud and clear enough for Silvana). I do wish this novela were a bit more subtle. But I have the feeling that wishing for subtlety in a comedic telenovela is futile.

I agree that wearing civvies would have been preferable to wearing those uniforms from the previous school. My guess is that Silvana had no experience with public schools and had no idea of what would be appropriate or inappropriate.

You make an excellent point about why Maria José should finish her degree. Heck, her semester has even been paid for. But, as you say, she's acting like a total jerk and deserves to lose Andrés. I just wonder how/why he became so fond of her in the first place.

I wonder that, too, about Jorge's relationship with Margarita. I think Margarita comes closer than anyone else except Antonio José to being an out and out baddy. And it looks as if Jorge is already turning his affection elsewhere. Perhaps that's the beauty of comedies--there are no horrendous threats. But I kinda miss the true evil of someone like Marlene in Eva or Colmillo in Bajo. Of course, neither of those novelas was a comedy. Hmmm...I guess Reina de Corazones had true bad guys, and I suppose it was a comedy, but it was something of a delightful outlier in novela-land. Perhaps that's why Telemundo shredded it.

Senos and Señora Acero

Thanks, deb, for your concise but helpful summaries of Senos and Señora Acero. I might have decided to watch the latter had it been on at an earlier hour, but between the late hour and the fact that it seemed to depend somewhat on our having seen the earlier seasons, I gave up after two episodes. Silvana, by contrast, depends on nothing except the ability to suspend disbelief. :-)

SILVANA

Terrific recap, Juanita! It was loaded with clever asides. I may be in for the duration for Silvana, mostly for the cyber comradeship! I haven’t had a chance to catch up on the other two evening Telemundo offerings. I’ve only seen the first episodes of Senos and La Coyote, both of which I liked better than Silvana the first night.

I liked Stella a bit better last night. I like her friendship with Dominique, the classic bonding between a female character and a gay man, something we’ve seen a lot in recent years in TNs. Anyway I felt sorry for her trying so hard to win over Lucha, who wouldn’t give her an inch. Of course she’s doomed to failure with Manuel, since he’s the galán and she’s NOT the protagonista.

I think this must be a Latino thing, as I pick up hints of it from my co-worker, Chela, about over-protective parenting. My child, admittedly male, did not live at home at age 22. And if he had, it would never occur to me to chastise a 22 year old for coming in late from a club.

Yep, MJ definitely got a lot of her DNA straight from Trinidad. And neither of them are very intelligent. How can they believe that the whoppers about still living in Coral Gables and there having been a fire (caused by a servant!) will hold up?

MJ is just ridiculous with her accusations of Lucha flirting and going to school to catch a man. Talk about pot…kettle! I do believe Andrés is attracted to Lucha, but from what I’ve seen Lucha just views him as a kind person to spend a half hour with as a break from studying so hard.

I believe the youngest Gallardo is Pedrito, short for Pedro. In an early episode, probably the first one, the boys’ names were explained as being after famous Mexican singers and/or actors. Vicente for Vicente Fernández, aka Don Chente, Jorge for Jorge Negrete, Pedrito for Pedro Infante and Lucha for Lucha Villa.

I think Silvana needing to wear a uniform is another of those false notes in telenovelas based in the US. I’ve noticed women in offices wearing uniforms in novelas based in Mexico.

SILVANA

I was almost feeling sorry for Stella too. That dinner was awful.

SILVANA

I remember once in The Golden Girls, Sophia said 'Jealousy is a very ugly thing, Dorothy. And so are you in anything backless.'
The behavior of Stella, MJ and Margarita REALLY illustrates that perfectly! Ugly ugly behavior.

Silvana

Jude Gray, good comment about ugly jealous behavior. Margarita is the worst of the three you mentioned. That scene at the school with her joining in on the bullying of Lupita was awful. Any verbal bullying is awful. But verbal bullying by a much older girl just because she's jealous of the poor child's SISTER is beyond the pale. I can't believe Jorge didn't just rip her apart after she did it. I seem to recall his response as being too mild for what Margarita had done.

SILVANA

Yes, novelera, Margarita was definitely the worst. Jorge should have dumped her on the spot (you know he's looking for an excuse!) although as far as I remember, he didn't actually witness it with his own eyes. I could be mistaken,as I was petting my old dog throughout the whole episode :)

Silvana

Many thanks, novelera, for your very kind remarks about the recap and your great comments about the novela. And thanks, too, for "Pedrito." I'm sure you're right, and I'd hate to keep repeating the same error each time I recap.

About living with one's parents, I've told that it's quite common for Latino/a young people to live with their families until they get married.

Also, I'm delighted that you may be staying with Silvana! It's certainly not a great novela, but it may make for some fun discussion.
