Yago, #39, Wednesday 7/20/16: The Pliers of Despair

Tomas Vargas's adopted son Hernan tells us in a flashback that he doesn't know what it's like to feel the pain of being weak. Tomas Vargas adopts a boy named Hernan. The director of the orphanage (or whatever) warns Tom that Hernan is a troubled child. (We see him playing with a knife.) Our narrator reminds us that, alas, that pain can be helpful because it tells us when it's time to run away.

Still in the flashback, Tom tells Hernan that if he's good, he'll get a treat. Today Tom is going to teach him to shoot! In another flashback when Hernan is a few years older, Hernan is dragging corpses into the horse stables for his proud adoptive daddy.

Lucio visits at Abel's house and presents him with some of the evidence that Camilo gave him at the end of the previous episode. We don't see any of it now, but later we see that there are photos of Teo working with Yago. Abel is shocked and angry. Lucio explains that Yago and Teo both work for Fidel. Abel is even more upset to hear that Yago is now engaged to Ambar!

Camilo and Fidel are still facing off at the former Candy Bar. Fidel gloats. Julia is disgusted with all of them, and runs out. Yago follows to comfort her. (Hmm, I wonder if these two might have a future together?) Camilo shows Fidel the lucky coin and says he'll get it back in the next cadaver, and it will be even more devastating than the loss of his two sons. Camilo dares Fidel to shoot him now and show Julia what kind of man he really is. Selma talks Fidel out of it.

Back to Abel's house. Lucio is smoking, but Abel can't seem to get his lighter to work. I suppose Lucio could give him a light, but he doesn't. Besides, that cigarette must be horribly stale by now, not to mention it's soaked with hair grease. Anyway, Lucio tells Abel that their ally is Camilo Mitchell.

Teo and Katia have watched the Candy Bar showdown on surveillance cameras. Teo states that Julia is the only thing that matters to Camilo. Teo gets a call from Abel.

Sara reads about Yago opening a new bar. Lucio, who is preparing for a press conference with Camilo to be officially named head of Casino Paraiso, is pleased with all the luck that casino has brought them. But he sees the article Sara is reading and accuses her of being obsessed with Yago. She's never sunk so low over any man; not Lucio, not even Omar. Sara insists that she hates Yago and is keeping tabs on him so they can make him pay for what he's done.

Katia tells Yago that Teo got a call from Abel to meet him alone someplace. It seems rather sudden, as Abel was supposed to turn himself in to the police. She's worried.

Katia should be worried. Teo goes to the auto shop, where Abel greets him with a gun and a lot of angry accusations.

Before the press conference, Camilo asks Lucio for some inside info on Yago. Lucio says that the only person Yago's close to is Ambar.

Jonas, Bruno, and Melina decide to try to get custody of Matias. Ambar shows up with a gift for Mati; Melina tells Ambar that Mati is with Sara and Lucio.

Sara is beating Mati at Monopoly when a messenger delivers Ambar's gift. It's Ambar's favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Mustache. (I can't tell what kind of animal it's supposed to be.) There's a note saying that Mr. Mustache will keep Mati safe and that Ambar is getting her operation today. (In retrospect, Ambar prolly should have kept Mr. Mustache with her for the operation.)

So Teo is tied to a post at the auto shop, and Abel is yelling at him. I thought you were my friend, how many bosses do you have anyway, etc. Teo tries to convince Abel that all his manipulations were for Abel's benefit. (Since when does anyone like to hear that?)

Yago and Katia are at Abel's house. They find the photos of Teo with Yago and realize that Abel must be confronting Teo right now. They hurry off to the auto shop, where they distract Abel with a smoke bomb just as he's torturing Teo with pliers and preparing to kill him. Yeah! So Teo is rescued by Katia. Then they tie Abel to that post. Teo repeats that they're really all on the same side, and cuts Abel loose.

Lucio tells Camilo that he and Sara make a good team. Camilo advises Lucio to keep a cool head. Camilo calls someone and tells him that Ambar's their girl, and she's in the hospital. Lucio looks worried.

Ambar is in the hospital. Yago gives her a pep talk. Ambar asks him about Julia. Then it's time for Ambar to have some pre-op tests. After she is wheeled out, Yago gets a call from Fidel to turn on the TV. It's Camilo's press conference introducing Lucio as the new head of his casino.

Bruno sees the press conference at home and rushes out the door.

Yago finds Sara in the waiting room. He taunts her over her selfishness (to be fair, she only just found out about the operation) and congratulates her on her and Lucio's partnership with Camilo.

Bruno tries to bust up the press conference. In front of everyone, he calls Lucio a murderer. Bruno is ushered out and goes home with a bloody nose.

After the press conference, Lucio calls Abel to warn him that Ambar might be in trouble.

Katia is tending to Teo's wounds. He's devastated over losing Abel's friendship. He asks Katia not to tell Yago that he cares about Abel.

Fidel and Selma worry about Camilo's threat. Where will that coin turn up next? I think it's obvious that it will be either Selma or Julia, but maybe there's someone else we don't know about?

The anesthesiologist introduces himself to Ambar as Dr. Mendoza. They are joined by a nurse who addresses him by name. Then a doctor comes in (the surgeon?) and asks where is Dr. Linares. They say he's dealing with a family matter. The doctor calls Linares himself and asks how is his daughter. We see Dr. Linares being held at gunpoint. He says everything is okay and that Dr. Mendoza is cool. "Good luck to your daughter," the doctor says to Linares.

(I hope Linares doesn't have a daughter, and this doctor knows that "Dr. Mendoza" is not cool at all!)

Comments:
I'm doing some errands after work, plus dinner, so the recap might be kinda late... but hopefully before the next episode airs!

Look forward to it Julie! Here I was worried we would lose Abel and it looks like we are about to lose someone much more innocent.

Carvivile: Now we get to see Daddy Michell & the B613 conspirators (Lucio, Sara, Tomas, etc.,) viciously retaliate against Yago & the Avengers!

I am embarrassed to admit that my recap is being delayed by TVA. Something cool just happened there :)

Hell's bells, I'm being delayed by something more problematic: this episode isn't on Hulu yet. Hopefully I can watch it a little later tonight or get up early enough tomorrow to watch it then, and write up something brief. Sorry. :-(

I'm watching right now!

Steve, I suspect you're watching #40 right now. You are always one ep ahead of the recaps because you get Unimas and don't have to rely on Hulu to make it available the net day. Be careful not to reveal spoilers!

WOW! I'm not going to spoil the episode of last night for everyone, but wow, I wasn't expecting that.

This episode, 39, was a doozy! If Hulu still hasn't loaded it, I could do a quick and dirty recap from memory later when I'm in the office. Let me know.

Thanks, Vivi. Both 39 and 40 are on Hulu now. I won't have time to see 40 this morning, but I'm about to do a quick recap of #39.

Yeesh. Thanks to the power of coffee, I was up till after 1 - and still no sign of the episode. I'm tired now, but the recap is done.

The opening flashback was rather odd. We don't know Hernan, do we? Maybe he's the fake anesthesiologist.

Julie- Yes. He's the fake Doc. Sara noticed his red Chucks as he walked into the operating room. Seems to be his signature look, since Tomas gave him his first pair. On to read the recap!

Just started reading-- I believe it's Hernan's voice, not Tomas, who was narrating the flashback. Ok. Back to reading!

Julie- Fantastic! That ending was something else. I hope Dr. Linares makes it. Every good of Ambar's doc to call and check. Too bad Camilo's people were thinking ahead.

I don't care if Abel feels like he was used and manipulated. Teo, Yago and Fidel have nothing to do with why he felt he needed to come clean about Omar. What about the promise he made to Omar's family? That all went out the window because his feelings and his pride were hurt? Boo! If he can save Ambar he'll win some points back with me.

Hernan, the Red Chucks Killer is creepy. Tomas and Camilo finding emotionally disturbed children in orphanages and turning them into child killers and immoral assassins is scary.

Julie,

Thanks for this fabulous recap. Wow! What dedication, persistence, and incredible talent. We are so fortunate to have you recapping this for us.

"...that cigarette must be horribly stale by now, not to mention it's soaked with hair grease."

I've been thinking that very thing for awhile now. I love watching him fiddle with that cigarette and lighter. It's a fun distraction from the severe darkness of this TN.

Poor Ámbar. Yikes. What a complex plot aimed at a total innocent who ordinarily wouldn't be a difficult target. And she's an odd choice of targets. I doubt that her death is going to trouble Fidel very much. Maybe Sara will recognize that Dr.s rarely wear red sneakers and will jump to the rescue.

Carlos

Gracias, Julie. This episode was incredible.

We've all been predicting that Ambar won't come out of this alive. This medical situation doesn't look good; she could be a goner.

But Abel is still alive. And at least Julia knows some of the truth. The lies were getting so egregious in the previous episode I was thinking she'd need a long stay in a foreign mental hospital to deal with it all.

Urban- Yep. Ambar had a short shelf life date stamped on her from day one. If it wasn't her heart that would get her, then she would have become collateral damage in this war between her sister, brother-in-law, Abel, Yago, and their superiors (Damian, Camilo, Fidel).

I feel so sad for poor Mati, who is already crying over his tia having dangerous surgery. Yes, let's hope Abel can save the day, or that those red sneakers raise enough of a red flag for Sara that she goes to investigate.

Thanks Vivi - I think you're right, that must have been Hernan narrating the opening flashback.

Between Sara noticing the shoes, the surgeon asking the real anesthesiologist about his daughter, and Abel's hero complex, I think Ambar will come out of this okay. But some of you already know how this turns out! Curse Univision/Unimas for screwing us up like this so that most of us have to be a day behind and we can't discuss the latest until later...

Julie: I still don't see Ambar being with us :(

Wow at the episode and triple wow at your ability to write a comprehensive recap in less than an hour! Excellent work, Julie! And yes, poor Ámbar should've taken her favorite plush toy with her. Mr. Bigotes is now an orphan. I kept my eye on the syringe the whole time during that tense last scene and, despite the interruptions, Hernán the fake anaesthetist managed to inject it into the tube. Whatever was in that syringe is now in Ámbar's bloodstream. :(

The Abel-Teo scene was very intense but I kept laughing out loud at Abel calling Teo "Menonita" (Mennonite). He came up with that nickname a while back, when he was drunk and brooding over something torturing his conscience (I can't remember the episode or why he was down in the dumps), but I remember that he grabbed Teo's face and said: "You look like a Mennonite, you know that? Are your parents Mennonite? Do you make cheese, Menonita?" (Mennonite communities used to and still make Queso Chihuaha cheese in Northern Mexico). I wonder if, after releasing Abel, Teo told him why they are on the same side off-screen, or whether he just let him go without explaining further. Also, when Teo asked Katia not to tell Yago, he was referring to the mini-torture session in the auto shop. Yago already suspects/knows that Teo has grown very fond of Abel.

LOL moment of the night: Lucio smoking a ciggie at Abel's and lamenting: "It's terrible that you can't trust anyone these days!" Look who's talking!

Camilo talking about Ámbar on the phone in front of Lucio is either a power play to show Lucio who's boss or a test to see if he'll manage to keep his mouth shut.

One last thing, Ámbar's fate is all on Yago. He played Camilo dirty, he knows Camilo knows he played him dirty, he knows Camilo's propensity for taking revenge on his enemies' loved ones, he knows Ámbar's name is plastered all over the press as his future wife and he did NOTHING to protect.

Thanks again, Julie! Good day all! :)

Just a little clarification: I didn't watch Episode #40 so when I said that Ámbar is (99%) a goner, it is not a spoiler. It is purely based on the fact that the contents of the syringe were succefully injected into Ámbar's tube and that Hernán guy doesn't look like a screw-up at his job. Like it was narrated in the beginning, he had no pain and no feeling, he is a machine, the perfect soldier or "button" for a crime organization. Camilo pushed the button. Unless there is a last-minute miracle, this isn't looking good for poor Ámbar.

Carlos, I think Camilo's line of thinking is as follows: strike at Yago by killing Ambar. Yago will lose his appetite for revenge and/or turn against Fidel, and Fidel will be deprived of his most valuable weapon.

I see a lot of flaws there, including the very real prospect that Ambar's death would spur Yago to double down rather than quit.

Of course, some of this depends on whether Ambar's death is meant to look like an accident or if Yago is supposed to know that Cam is responsible for her death. (Or if it will somehow look as though Fidel was at fault.)

Regardless, when Camilo said the coin would be coming back with another cadaver, and that it would be a loss even more devastating than that of Benjamin and Yuri, I doubt that he was referring to Ambar. Ambar's death is just a minor nuisance to Fidel compared with what Camilo was describing. Who or what does Fidel hold more dear than his two sons?

Julie, I agree with your assessment. What would hurt Fidel more than losing his two sons will be losing his only remaining daughter. However, we know that Camilo adores Julia and would never have her killed or physically harmed. Therefore, Ámbar is just the first step in something much more sinister. I fail to see how all of this will play out and ultimately lead to Fidel losing Julia forever but Camilo is cunning and ruthless. Whatever he has in mind must be horrendous.

Thank you Julie.

Another innocent lamb may die at Yago's feet. This guy is monster material with the rest of them. Is Omar in there at all?

Thanks, Nandicta. Yes, Ambar did get injected. And I think the nurse gave her a drink of something.

We're not sure whose side the nurse is on. We also don't know for sure that Yago didn't take any precautions on Ambar's behalf. It's happened a couple of times on this show that someone does something clever that we don't find out about until later. The nurse's face was covered with a surgical mask, so I couldn't tell - any chance she could be Yago's friend Nurse Dulce? What was in that cup she gave to Ambar? Is it possible to administer an antidote (orally) when you can't be sure of the poison?

Wow, Hernan's story sure is heartwarming and inspiring. Not.

Thanks so much Julie! I really need to stop watching this show before I go to bed because I couldn't sleep worrying about Ambar. I'm actually putting off last nights episode so it won't ruin my day. Show is so good but depressing the hell out of me!

Totally agree that Abel had no reason not to turn himself in. It felt like a character betrayal by the writers because Abel seemed clear eyed on what he needed to do and past the point of violence towards anyone.

Tofie, I'm afraid that Fidel taught his pupil well. There are remnants of Omar in Yago but they are buried deep down. I started feeling disgusted with Yago that time Ámbar caught him in bed with Sara and he smacked his head hard, really angry at himself. I thought he was angry at himself for hurting Ámbar. Nope! Two seconds later, he is shown outside the courthouse with Katia and he is moaning that he is mad at himself for letting himself get caught, because that would jeopardize the chances of Sara testifying against Lucio. He didn't pause for a second to think about Ámbar or feel the slightest remorse about using her. And he continued using her up until the eve of her operation, making her run errands for him when she should be resting. And now, the cherry on top of a fantastic manipulation, Ámbar is paying for Yago's power games with mafiosi. Yago needs an anvil yesterday!

Julie, I didn't get a good look at the nurse's face (I was too concentrated on that syringe!), but I like your theory! However, I do remember the nurse calling Hernán Dr. Mendoza BEFORE the surgeon entered the room asking for Dr. Linares and wondering who the new anaesthetist is. That part had me confused. Oh well, we'll find out soon enough who is who in that pre-op room.

If Omar is inside Yago, he must be napping. Or else he is tied up and gagged. (Occasionally he's allowed a drink of salty orange juice.) There's no sign of him in Yago's behavior. In fact, there's barely any sign of humanity in Yago's behavior. He's focused like a laser on Sara, Lucio, and Abel, and not paying attention to much beyond whatever is needed for his mission. He has neglected Katia's welfare and overlooked Fidel's sadism. He was very, very slow to catch on that Fidel had an agenda of his own, and even now I don't think he realizes just how dangerous Fidel is, nor considered the possibility that he and Fidel might end up as opponents. Yago's world is so tiny and so limited that it really shouldn't be too hard to blindside him.

Only thing Yago cares about right now is Sara is back with Lucio playing house. As part of the goon squad the only people he is capable of destroying are the amateurs.

Agree Julie and he has completely neglected his family and what the are going thru. Poor Bruno is suffering and Yago isn't there, He is oblivious to the situation with Mati. Melina needs to call him and set him straight, bec no one can come close except maybe her.

Oh yeah, Carvivlie. If Camilo knew that Yago cared about that family, they'd be in big trouble. And if Yago's being followed then it shouldn't take Cam long to find out about Yago's church meetings with Melina. I'm surprised he doesn't already know.

Julie: This is why I'm worried about Bruno & Melina.

Daddy Michell is going more sinister with his counter revenge plot to exterminate the Avengers!

Tofie: I'm updating the Body Count right now & will be looking forward to the recap from Thursday night!

Ay yi yi...I agree with everyone who admired your heroic recap after having to wait until hell freezes over for the episode to appear on Hulu. They are so inconsistent. Sometimes dumping two episodes at once it seems after a full day's delay.

Have not seen 39 or 40 but will be sure and watch well before bedtime. There are enough real life tragedies going on right now, I don't need to add Yago stress to the mix.

Thanks Ms. Julie. Love both your recaps and your insightful comments.

Nandicta: What happened to Friday's recap ?

Did it suddenly disappear ?

Steve- It was up too soon. It will be re-posted later.

Steve, the recaps and/or discussion pages are posted the day after the episode airs, after 4pm EDT. This is a rule that my teammates and I agreed to ensure that every episode gets enough time to be discussed and that no recap impinges on the previous ones. This is especially important given the late broadcasting hour, the fact that the 4 recappers live in different times zones and we mostly rely on differed viewing online, which does not always guarantee that episodes are uploaded in a timely manner. Pesonally, I endeavor to have part or all of the recap up between 6pm and 9pm EDT. My teammate always post their recaps and/or discussion pages between 4pm and 7pm EDT at the latest.

I hope this answers your query. This way you know when to check the main blog for your Yago recaps and/or discussion pages. :)

I have two questions not as central to the plot but they puzzle me nonetheless:

1) Did anybody else sense that Katia's loyalty is shifting from Yago to Teo? She is agreeing to hiding stuff from Yago and she seems sympathetic to Teo's friendship with Abel. Am I reading too much into this or is it the fact that Katia has been absent from the last two episodes with Yago flying solo and failing to involve his loyal sidekick?

2) Are we ever gonna find out the what, how, why of Silvia hitting Damián with her car? It can't have been just a random thing! It's been driving me crazy for days. I need to know!

Nanditca- 1) Yes, I sense that as Katia's feelings for Teo grow, and Yago becomes more distant, she is becoming more loyal to Teo. Would that ever lead to a true betrayal of Yago? I don't believe so. Teo is her man, but Yago is her brother. And unlike Lucio, she takes that seriously. 2) Dammit! I want to know too! I feel like the writers dropped the ball on that story. I SO wanted her to turn out to be Ale's savior. In addition, it sounds like she confirmed to the cops that Ale and Damian were running a scam on her. I hoped she would have said that she's pretty sure Ale never intended to defraud her, and proved so by going behind Damian's back to tell her the truth. Motive for murder! Hello!

Ditto what Vivi said on both counts. Though I don't agree that Yago has been flying solo lately - he and Katia figured out where Teo was and rescued him together. But yes, Katia's loyalty or focus has shifted a bit. This could put her in a tough position.

As for Silvia, I feel sure there's a reason she was mentioned in that article about Damian that made Bruno so angry. Perhaps Bruno will follow up on it, talk with her, and find out something that helps him connect some crucial dots.

Thanks, Vivi! I wonder who Katia would opt for, if it comes down to a choice between Teo and Yago. And yes, Alejandra returning from the dead thanks to Silvia's help would've been an amazing reveal towards the end of the show! Unfortunately, there was a body and Ale is well and truly dead!

Thanks, Julie! I meant Yago was flying solo before this episode (during all that Camilo, Julia and Bar Candy business, as well as the manipulation of Abel, Katia was nowhere to be seen.

I like your theory about Bruno seeking Silvia further down the line and uncovering new truths about Damián that could lead him all the way to Camilo as the mastermind of the casino robbery.

Meant to comment before that Bruno interrupting the press conference and showing that he will be a huge pain in the side of his new protege, Lucio, means that he could become a target for Camilo-- completely separate from his revenge on Fidel and Yago. I'm so worried for that young man!

Recap for Episode 40 is now up!

Thanks, Nandicta and Julie. Fantastic recaps. Just finished another Yago marathon.

Kudos to Lucio for alerting Abel that Ambar is in trouble. In addition to the red Keds, the hitman has done a lousy job covering up his beard with the mask.

After Lorenzo and Alejandra, things don't look good for Ambar but there's still enough time to bend or break that IV to stop the poison from running into her veins.

Yago has some nerve getting on Sara's case about being at the hospital. Last time I checked, cheating on your sister isn't a capital offense. Sara has a right to be there.

This RN is so dark, sometimes I find myself amused by little things. Like Camilo's hair. The silver is fabulous and never seems to be styled the same way twice.
