Yago #47, Wednesday August 4, 2016: Yago vs. Omar

Bullet points:

- Lucio gets Damian out of jail, much to the horror of Sara and Mati.

- Julia accepts Selma as her mama. (Fidel will have to wait a little longer.)

- Melina tells Yago she doesn't want any more to do with him. He can come back when he's ready to be Omar.

- Lucio looks for Abel at Camilo's request, but is unable to find him. Also, Lucio's been doing coke. Oh yeah, that'll totally help!

- Yago agrees to let Jimena, the pushy artist, exhibit her art in his bar. He offers her a wall for a new mural.

- There's some discussion about what to do with Abel. Also, Team Fidel/Yago agree to target Hernan next.

- Camilo impresses Mati and woos Sara. (Sara lets Camilo know that Lucio isn't Mati's biological father.) The flirtation leads to a poker game in which Sara is the prize. Sara throws the game, but when it's time to pay up, it's not clear if she can go through with it...

The blow-by-blow:

We begin the episode not with a flashback, but a contemplation. Yago tells us that the worst part of becoming Yago was not being able to embrace his (Omar's) family. As Selma once reminded him: "they're not your family; they're Omar's." And Omar is in the past.

Yago knows he's causing pain to his (Omar's) family. Melina says she doesn't recognize Omar in him. Today she was on the verge of losing her life for the second time; he's putting his vengeance above her welfare.

Camilo tells Hernan to find out how Omar got out of prison and became Yago Vila. Also, get them to reopen Omar's case, get him thrown back in jail, and given the "special treatment."

Julia tries to see Abel, but Teo and Katia won't let her in. Neither will Fidel; he says they're not sure whose side Abel is on. Selma tells Julia, "Abel's not the one with the answers you need. Ask me instead." She also tries to get Julia to eat something. As the two women leave, Fidel remarks to Teo and Katia, "she'll never see me as a father, will she? Only a monster."

On the roof, Julia hands Selma her reply to the letter that Selma had written to Fabiana years ago. Selma didn't know that Katia had taken that letter; Julia tells her not to be angry with Katia, because that letter was what brought Julia here today. Seeing Selma's pain on losing her daughter made Julia aware of the pain of losing her mother. "I've dreamed of this day, but never dreamed it would come true," Selma says. Julia offers to read her reply aloud to Selma. "Mama, I imagined you were an adventurer, poet, teacher. I imagined you were a strong and loving woman. I'm so grateful that life has given me a chance to meet you. You're no longer the fantasy of a lonely little girl." They hug. Fidel watches. Julia sees him and takes off.

Melina and Yago give an Omar-free account of the day's events to Bruno and Jonas. In this version, Hernan is merely a con artist and they should avoid him. Jonas asks, why should they believe Yago after what Mati said about him? Yago says that Lucio and Sara have been telling Mati nasty stories about him because they're sour with Yago for breaking off his business relationship with them when he found out what kind of people they were. Yago advises them to lock their doors, and he's having some of his men watch their house.

At the prison, Lucio tells Damian that all he has to do is keep an eye on Sara. Lucio meets with the warden and tells him that it's a direct order from Camilo to release Damian at once. As the warden hurries to fetch the paperwork, Lucio gets a call from Camilo, who has no idea what Lucio is up to. Camilo tells Lucio to find Abel - he's joined Yago's team. Lucio doubts that, but Camilo doesn't want to hear about it and hangs up on Lucio in midsentence.

Camilo goes to the Sarquis home with a gift for Mati, to make up for putting Mati's daddy in a bad mood. (Sara does a sort of double-take when she realizes the gift isn't for her.) It's a toy Ferrari, looks like the kind you can get at CVS but for all I know maybe it came directly from the Ferrari plant in Italy. Camilo offers to take Mati and Sara for a spin in his real Ferrari.

The artist stuff was split up among six different scenes, but I'll put it all together here for your convenience so that you can easily skip it if it nauseates you: Jimena, the artist, comes to the bar again and makes a big deal of the fact that she had to come on the Metro. Katia is like ugh, whatever, I'll call you a cab. Thinking she has kicked Jimena out, Katia retires to the office, where she tries to look at the security videos and discovers they've been erased.

Not only does Jimena fail to leave, she begins installing her art all over the bar. She's still there when Yago returns. Katia scolds her, is criticized (by Jimena) for her ignorance of art, and leaves Jimena alone with Yago. Yago moodily sips his mezcal and lets Jimena chatter as she shows him some uninteresting pieces. But there is one piece (which looks nothing like the others) which catches his attention; it is a drawing of a man looking at his past. Yago is intrigued; where did she get the idea for that? Jimena replies that it was inspired by the sight of a man she saw on the Metro. (Another painting is of someone with a mirror for a face.) After this conversation, Yago seems to perk up and is amused by her energy and persistence. He agrees to let her exhibit her art in his bar, and even offers her a whole wall (in a smallish nook) for a mural.

Okay, that's the end of the artist stuff. What can I say? Different people like different things, and Yago apparently likes Jimena. Given this TN's trajectory, that probably means she'll be killed, but we shall see.

Abel's feeling better and he wants to leave Fidel's. Fidel says no.

Yago thanks Melina for covering for him, and promises to get her a new phone. But she doesn't want one. She's tired of this, all the lies and the danger to her family. Yago protests that he doesn't want to be away from his family, but Melina replies, "I am not Yago's mama, I'm Omar's mama. Don't set foot in this house until you can do so as who you really are."

Julia finally gets to confront Abel. He insists that he really wants to be her friend, and that Ambar was his pumpkin. Julia seems unimpressed... but there is also some weird chemistry between them. I think they want to either strangle one another, have sex, or a jumbled combination of the two. Julia asks Abel to explain who are Melina and Omar, and what do they have to do with Yago; however, we don't see how the conversation ends.

Lucio goes to Abel's house and, not finding him there, leaves him a voicemail warning that Camilo is looking for him and Abel might be in danger.

Camilo has taken Sara and Mati to the park and gives the boy some money for chicharrones. Sara asks Camilo if he's thinking about his own daughter. Camilo admits that maybe he should have told her the truth. Sara replies that "we don't tell our children the truth; it's to protect them." (Ha. In both her case and Camilo's, it's to protect themselves.) Sara confides that Lucio isn't Mati's biological father; I don't think she mentions that Lucio is aware of that. Camilo asks who the actual father was, but Mati returns with the chicharrones, and the conversation is over.

At the casino, Sara thanks Camilo for the nice day, and he thanks her for the talk. He feels that they have this thing (lying to their children, LOL) in common. Lucio approaches, but Camilo swiftly dismisses him after determining that Lucio hasn't found Abel yet.

Camilo points out a client named Diego Grouton (?) and tells Sara he'd like to convert this client into an investor. However, before Camilo can introduce Sara to Diego, Damian wheels into the casino. Lucio watches with amusement as Damian introduces himself to Camilo and sings Sara's praises.

Fidel and Teo debate Abel's loyalties. The outcome: Fidel puts Teo in charge of Abel.

Lucio continues to be amused by Damian as the cockroach charms the people at his table. Sara wants to kick him out, but Camilo calls Damian into his office. Lucio joins them. Camilo tells Lucio to put Damian up in his home. Lucio indicates that Sara will be really, really pleased. Cam comes out of his office and gives Sara big thumbs-up!

Teo admits to Abel that he knew about Yago being Omar all along. Abel asks, "was your friendship ever sincere?" Teo replies that it wasn't so hard to like Abel except that time when he used the pliers on him. Abel says that if everything Teo did had been for Omar, that would be okay; Abel deserves it. But if he was doing it for Yago, that's what really hurts.

Sara accuses Lucio of unleashing Damian to scare Camilo away from her. (LOL, as if Camilo would think twice about whacking a girlfriend's father that nobody likes.) Lucio insists that no man would ever put up with Sara other than himself. Sara says Damian will be Lucio's problem.

Sara tries to talk to Camilo about Damian, but Cam misunderstands, thinking that she is trying to thank him. "But I know how you can pay me back!" he says. He proposes a game of poker. If he wins, Sara will go home with him tonight.

Later that evening, Damian catches Lucio abusing his nose. He is snorting the stuff off of his phone, apparently. (Is there a cocaine mirror app?) Lucio hurriedly covers it all up with a sofa cushion when Mati rushes in to show off his Ferrari. The boy is upset to see Damian there. "You promised he'd never come back!" he accuses Lucio. "I'll never trust you again!" After finding out that Camilo gave Mati the car, Lucio sends the boy out of the room. Damian gloats about Mati's new "stepfather." Lucio grabs him by the necktie and threatens him. Then he licks the remaining coke off of his phone and tries to call Sara.

Sara pays no attention to her phone. (Why are they playing with chips? What is the significance of chips in a bet that doesn't involve money?) Camilo has a full house: three eights and two aces. Sara has four queens, which is a better hand. He shows his cards, and she folds without showing hers. (When Sara played the truth game with Omar in the flashback last week, she played to lose. I see she hasn't changed her tactics.) They leave the casino together.

At Fidel's place, Yago tells the team that they should go after Hernan next. They also agree to look into Tom Vargas's death - they don't know who left his body at the bar, because their security videos were erased when the bar was left unprotected. Fidel says his own men are protecting the bar now.

Yago brings a bottle up to Abel's room and says they have much to discuss. Abel says he has nothing to discuss with Yago. "But you do with Omar," Yago replies.

Sara is with Camilo in his living room. She looks confident as he flirts with her and says he's been looking forward to this for a long time. But as he begins kissing her neck, Sara's face changes, and she reaches for his wrist. In our next episode, we'll find out whether this is a grimace of passion and a suggestion that he put his hand on her boob, or if it's a replay of what happened when she picked up that guy in a bar after Yago rejected her.

Comments:
Oh! Almost forgot. I commented earlier this week, insisting that Hernan had brought Melina's donation to a donation center. I looked again (again), and now I don't know what I thought I was looking at. It does indeed appear that he threw their stuff in a dumpster - fairly close to the house, in fact.

Sorry about that!

Thank you Julie :)

I was right about Hernan throwing the Guerrero's things in the trash.

1.) Glad that Julia accepted Selma as her mother. Fidel, you're going to have to wait brother!

2.) Lucio doing cocaine ? Downward spiral continues!

3.) Daddy Dearest likely to target Team Avengers again.

4.) Melina banning Yago from the family OUCH!

5.) I'm still not trusting Jimena. For all we know, she could be a secret plant sent by Daddy Michell to pump Yago for information.

6.) Teo & Katia always strong!

Thanks for the start Julie. You could probably leave it there, if you're busy, you hit the high points.

Oh, God, I know that Ximena will become Yago's new love interest. I can't stand her, of course, she's so annoying to me.

It looks that way, Cathyx. They seemed to have "chemistry." I don't understand it, but I know it when I see it.

Goodness Julie if you're on vacation, vacation! Don't be doing recaps. The bullet points were fine. Knowing nothing about poker, but figured Sara "lost" on purpose, but at the end, she looked like she was ready to hurl. Camilo is no Yago, in the looks department. That's for sure. Sort of like bunking with the Toad King.

Ha! Camilo's face is a bit toadish around the mouth, I think. I agree, that was a grimace of nausea, not passion. Sara just isn't cut out to be a slut. (And four queens definitely beats a full house, which is why she didn't show him her cards.) Funny thing, I didn't catch what the prize would be if Sara had won the game. This was her big chance to get Damian whacked.

Vacation shmacation, I'm doing a recap. I've already taken the notes - I'm just typing them up in between dinner courses. (Pea soup and hot dogs. I made the soup. It's good, I promise.)

Gracias, Julie. You caught all the important stuff.

Sarah definitely looked like she was going to lie still and think of Mexico, if she could get away with it. That she endured 11 years of Lucio when she didn't love him must have been a cakewalk by comparison. Who knows what perverse things she may be expected to do?

I also don't like Ximena. She is even more immature than Ambar.

Recap is finished.

I don't know what to think of J/Ximena. I thought she was annoying/amusing until she came up with that one painting that caught Yago's attention. Then I was suspicious. I doubt that Hernan could really put together such a clever scam so quickly, but this is fiction. On the other hand, it seems more likely that she's being positioned as Yago's deeply sensitive soulmate.

It all would have made more sense to me if her other pieces weren't so different and bland compared with that one. (OK, there were a couple that I didn't hate, but none of them looked as though they came from the same person who did the one of the man looking at his past.)

Thank you Julie! I managed to watch this episode very early in the morning before leaving home. I agree that Sara looked like she wanted to hurl when Camilo became amorous. But she made a decision to make a play for him, so now she has to live (and sleep) with the consequences.

I really enjoyed Melina reading Yago the riot act and cutting him off. He has some serious thinking to do about his situation. Ximena's man in the mirror pieces came at a perfect time. Those pieces definitely make me more suspicious of her.

I think Yago is drawn to women like Ambar and Ximena (I don't think it's necessarily romantic) because they remind him of Omar. Omar was happy, idealistic, naive, trusting, a go-getter, glass half full kind of guy. Both Ambar and Ximena give off the same kind of vibe as Omar did.

Ms. Julie..you sound like a woman after my own heart...I've been making split pea soup lately also. My husband won't eat it, and certainly not our son, so it's all for me! If times get tough, I figure I can make do with split pea and lentil soup and maybe a little bread. Preparing for the Apocalypse!

Vivi, I like your assessment of Ximena, especially since you say it's not necessarily romantic. :) And she is so excited to be able to exhibit her paintings that it's hard to say that she's interested in him as such. She's just excited to have an opportunity. But even if she's not in league with Hernan yet, that's not to say that Hernan won't try to horn in on her opportunity.

Judy, in fairness, though I do like to make split pea soup (especially in the colder months), I've been using canned peas lately and a stick blender, or sometimes frozen peas (or fresh ones, theoretically) which yields a rather different kind of soup. But the star of this particular soup was the stock I used, which I made from the tops of a lot of fresh vegetables, mostly celery but also onions and fennel. (Oh, and a bit of rabbit, so I guess it wasn't technically just a vegetable stock.) Yowza, that stock was so good I was drinking it cold out of the refrigerator.

I don't know about Sara. She was reaching for Camilo's wrist. If she puts up a struggle, will he force her?

For me, the winning moment of this episode was Lucio licking his phone. Lucio is doing very poorly indeed if he can't relax in his own home. And if Camilo finds out that Lucio tried to warn Abel that he was looking for him, Lucio will be just the name of another orchid.

Thanks Julie.

"Lucio's been doing coke. Oh yeah, that'll totally help!"

Vivi, totally agree on Yago & Ambar & Ximena. They are the Sara, Omar fabricated in his own mind.

Thanks, Julie. Great job. Yago apparently likes Jimena. Given this TN's trajectory, that probably means she'll be killed, but we shall see. -- yikes, so true!

I hate her lipstick shade, especially for daytime, so I don’t trust Jimena. Why so pushy to place her works in Ambar Bar, when she could move on and try another venue. Maybe she’s planted a surveillance bug or something on that painting. Earlier, Katia said she reeked of marijuana. I can see Camilo being shrewd enough to send an unlikely, disarming spy like Jimena.

Lucio has raised Mati and is his dad, regardless of not sharing his blood. Can’t stand that Sara told Camilo that Lucio is not Mati’s dad to score points with Daddy Warbucks. No matter how things end up, Mati will never forget his first (12?) years of life with Lucio as his father. Sara is a skunk and getting skunkier. Will she or won’t she go horizontal with Camilo? Reminds me of the old saying, “If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.”

That cockroach Damian wheeling in and spoiling Sara’s roll was a hoot. This is a grim tale but somebody writing has a sense of humor. Also cute when Teo told Abel feeling brotherly toward him came easy, except for the pliers finger torture.

Niecie: I'm sticking with my statement that Jimena is a spy working for Daddy Michell to manipulate Yago!

I do NOT trust this girl at all!

Julie,

Thanks for this excellent recap. Good job once again.

"Is there a cocaine mirror app?"

Heh heh.

"Why are they playing with chips?"

Exactly. That was strange.

"...you can easily skip it if it nauseates you..."

Well, I for one am enjoying Ximena. I think that she is a breath of fresh air whether she is a Camilo plant (that'd be a fascinating twist) or just a ditzy freewheeling dope-smoking artist with a eye for Yago. Her interaction with Katia is a hoot and clearly she has distracted Yago. However, I'm not impressed with her artwork.

Whether Omar was a loving and caring gentle family-oriented young man, Yago is a self-centered, brutal, sadistic jerk. Fidel can be proud of his creation.

Julie and Judy,

Now I'm wanting some split pea soup... even with little chunks of bunny in it.

Carlos

Yikes Carlos..."with chunks of bunny thrown in"...You know you're killing me. Just like those jokes about little lambkins frolicking into the ccoking pot. Your little semi-vegan friend is just a-tremblin' with horror, you rat.

Judy,

Sorry. Julie mentioned that her stock had rabbit in it.

Carlos

I KNOW Carlos...but you took it and ran with it you rascal!

I never saw a telenovela like this one.
1) It tries to show a reason why bad guys are bad (flashbacks).
2) The most flashbacks I ever saw in any story -- reminds me of Rayuela by Julio Cortázar & Lord Jim to an extreme.
3) Way too gruesome & gory.
4) The characters are exceeding complex & interesting (good writing).
5) The plot does seem very contrived, suddenly new characters enter (is that good?)
6) Is Jimena a rabbit path -- or sent by Camilo? Probably just a nervy flake.
7) My guess is that the originality is due to the Turkish authors.
8) This is not based on Dumas' Count -- I mean it could be considered a spin-off, with a serious moralistic basis: exploring the blessings vs curses of vengeance (as opposed to forgiveness). Yago is not the count; he did not get his power by discovering treasure on an island, & he lacks the omnipotence of the Dumas' character. We have a guy who is caught up in a tit-for-tat feud between 2 mafioso type dons & their gangs.
9) I don't find any of the characters sympathetic, except perhaps Omar's mother.
10) Abel is the result of a master at black (really black) comedy -- sorry for the term, black comedy, but that is the standard term methinks -- how about GRUESOME black comedy?
11) I really don't know how Sara will end up in this. Will they really have her live happily ever after with Omar/Yago? Die of AIDS?
12) I was sorry to see Tomas go; I thot he cud make more interesting stuff (fugitive from Don Juan Tenorio of Amarte Asi -- I like this really good actor).
13) IMHO they chose to cast more realistic persons than "eye candy" for this show.

I don't know where they are going with this. I had thot that Yago might end up with Amber, which would be more like the Dumas story -- Sara is getting to be more & more "damaged goods."

Will we see a moralistic ending where Yago has learned that he must be forgiving? Forgiveness triumps over vengeance; Camilo & Fidel arm in arm singing Kum Ba Yah, marching down the street with signs saying, "Hispanic Lives Matter"? Then we see Camilo & Fidel dancing in the Greenhouse doing the "My Little Buttercup" routine as in the Tres Amigos movie with Steve Martin.

Now if they really wanted to give us a chuckle, they could make Camilo's green house like "The Little Shop of Horrors" movie with Seymore the plant saying "FEED ME." We would see the orchids in Camilo's green house displaying the faces of murdered persons whom he fed to the plants. What the heck, we could see all the cast as flowers in that green house at the end -- ROFL.

Hi Enoch, yes this is a very different TN and I agree that it's not much like Count of Monte Cristo. It starts off looking similar, but as the story continues the resemblance fades.

I don't know where you think Sara would get AIDS, though. As far as we can tell she's only had sex with three men in her life, including the one who raped her many years ago. Camilo would be #4 and he seems pretty healthy.

I like the idea of having Camilo's plants, possessed by the souls of the victims they represent, turn on Camilo and devour him. But something tells me we won't see that.

Honestly, I haven't the faintest idea how this story will turn out or where Yago will end up. If he doesn't get a grip on himself, he'll end up back in prison for the crimes that he HAS participated in.

Someone has a big imagination who wrote this, coming up with the unexpected. For example, who would have predicted that they would make Fidel connected to orthodox Jewish persons. But perhaps they have abandoned that them, not showing an army of orthodox Jewish mafioso thugs -- quite an incongruous picture.

I must say that this site with its anti-spam system tries the patience. I must have tried 5 times to identify the pictures to satisfy the picture Captcha system before it took the post. I realize that there has to be spam filters. It looks like Telenovela-World was destroyed by spammers with the failure to put in a Captcha system or a Question/Answer system. I somehow doubt that Telenovela-World will ever be revived.

Steve, thank you for reposting the list, but I am confused. When did Damian poison Chino's wife? I don't remember that.

Steve- Ambar and Sara's mom died of natural causes, so I'm not sure that should really be included in the list. She also died quickly and quite happily-- right in the middle of playing hide and seek with her youngest child. Chino's wife is still alive, unless I missed an episode somewhere.

Hey, where's Silvia? I need Bruno to go find her and clear up a few things for us.
