Yago #51, Wednesday August 10, 2016: Unexpected Cliche

- Bruno overhears Sara and Yago, and discovers that Yago is Omar. At home, he wants to talk to Melina about Yago.

- Julia is pregnant by Abel and wants an abortion. Katia urges her to tell to Abel, but Julia doesn't want to talk to him.

- Julia's icy attitude towards Fidel begins to thaw.

- Ximena returns to the bar to finish her mural and to invite Yago to an art exhibit. It turns out she's an art instructor - she's not as young as she looks!

- Becker wants out of the deal with Camilo. Camilo doesn't like that.

- Abel is giving Teo the cold shoulder, and Yago is giving Abel the cold shoulder. It's a bromance love triangle!

- Sara is giving both Camilo and Lucio the cold shoulder, and Yago is giving Sara the cold shoulder. It's a love trapezoid!

- Camilo is leaning on Lucio to get Abel, and Lucio is waiting to hear from Fidel about being a double-agent. But Sara asks Yago to let her be the double-agent instead.

The blow-by-blow:

Bruno has a flashback: he and Omar are at Omar's house. Bruno is worried that after Omar marries Sara, he'll be too busy to spend time with Bruno. Omar tries to assuage Bruno's worries, and shows him a tin box he's hidden in the kitchen. It's a time capsule; Bruno adds his favorite photo to it. Omar is touched.

Perhaps the time capsule is what has drawn Bruno to Omar's house today. But he sees that Yago and Sara are there, so he hides outside and waits.

Yago explains to Sara that he only told her he was Omar because he thought she would die. Sara is stunned that she didn't realize it. She remembers when they first met, that when he ran his hand through his hair he reminded her of Omar. He tells her about the prison escape and the surgery. Sara says he always has been and always will be her only love.

Yago asks Sara, in that case, why did you betray me? She repeats that it was for Ambar. Yago asks her the question we all had: why didn't she tell him? He says he would have robbed the casino for her.

They are outside now, and Bruno hears Yago say to Sara: "Don't call me Omar! You killed him!" Sara apologizes for putting him in jail, but Yago is even angrier about Mati. He could have forgiven the betrayal or even the prison, but not that. Sara says she's sorry about that, but Yago knows the damage is done: Mati will always see Lucio as his father, and Yago will always be the intruder trying to win the boy's affection.

Yago begs Sara that if she has any decency, she mustn't tell Camilo or Lucio about him, and to leave him alone. "Omar could love you, but all I want is for you to pay for destroying my life. Get out."

Sara leaves, and Yago goes back into the house. Bruno peeps through the window as Yago cries. Then Yago gets the time capsule and looks inside. I see a top, a yo-yo, and some photos of happy Omar. Yago closes the box and puts it away.

Meanwhile, the Avengers (including Abel, but minus Yago) discuss Lucio. They know Yago won't approve of having Lucio on the team. Teo tries to be friendly to Abel, but Abel rebuffs him. Then Fidel wants to talk to Abel alone. He knows Abel's been hanging around with Julia a little bit, and wants to know how to reach her. Abel has an idea where he can find her.

Camilo meets with his investors. They've heard rumors that Camilo is responsible for the bomb at Yago's place. Camilo tries to convince them that Yago placed that bomb himself! Becker and his peeps are backing out of the deal. Camilo is displeased, and his reply sounds somewhat threatening (I didn't catch it). Afterwards, Camilo meets with Hernan, tells him they need to keep a low profile, and asks him to summon Lucio.

Katia finds Julia looking at a pregnancy test. It's positive. All telenovela pregnancy test results are positive; it's amazing. Julia says that Abel is the father. She hardly even knows him. She wants to have an abortion. Speak of the devil, Abel is trying to call her now. Julia rejects the call. Katia thinks Julia should talk to him. She tells Julia to take the afternoon off to think about it. They hug.

Later, Yago tells Katia that Sara knows he's Omar. Katia thinks they'd better report this to Fidel. Yago is sure that Sara will keep her mouth shut. (This is obviously not based on past experience.)

Fidel finds Julia at the shooting range, right where Abel said she might be. She ignores him and fires the gun, then quickly apologizes for shooting when he has no ear protection. Fidel is touched by her concern! He just wants her to know that he's there for her.

Julia asks Fidel why he and Selma brought her into the world in the midst of so much trouble. Fidel said that her birth could have changed everything. "But it changed nothing," she replies. Fidel admits that it didn't change everything, but it did bring them joy. She was their light in a barren world.

And with that, Julia and Fidel sort-of make up. She's not actually going to hang around with him right now, but at least she's speaking to him. Fidel is stoked!

Ximena returns to Yago's bar (I can't bring myself to call it "Ambar"). She thanks Yago for the insurance money for her ruined artwork, and she says she knows he's under Fidel Yampolski's protection. She's here because she hates unfinished business and wants to complete her mural. But, she asks, why the bomb? Yago tells her about Camilo's plans to develop the area.

Sara is sitting pensively at home with Mati. Mati thinks she's thinking about Damian. Mati recalls that everyone said that Ambar had gone to a better place. Mati offers that perhaps Damian has become a better person! Sara says let's hope so, for the sake of the other ghosts.

Sara tells Mati that she's made a lot of mistakes with him, but she loves him. She promises that everything will change. (She doesn't promise that it will change for the better!)

Abel, who saw some of Yago's chat with Ximena, lets Yago know that he approves of her. Yago tells Abel he shouldn't be here at the bar. Abel replies, "I will always be with you, hermano." But Yago says, "Things will never be the same between us."

Lucio, the unwise wiseacre, tells Camilo that what they need is a bomb that DOESN'T fail. "Oh, you've been talking to Sara," Camilo says. He tells Lucio to either get Abel back on their team, or get rid of him.

Lucio tries to get Abel to come back to Camilo, but Abel says Lucio should wait to hear from Fidel.

Yago gives Ximena a sandwich. She asks about Sara - how did Sara know about the bomb? Yago mysteriously says that Sara is surrounded by danger.

Ximena invites Yago to an art show tonight. It turns out that she's a art instructor. "I'm not as young as I look," she jokes.

Fidel tells Selma of his progress with Julia. He's happy, but still wondering if Julia will ever see him as a father.

At home, Lucio tells Sara that Fidel wants him to be a double-agent. They question one anothers' motives. Lucio thinks that all will be back to "normal" soon. (What is "normal" for this couple?)

Julia's back at work. Apparently she didn't feel like taking the afternoon off. Abel finds her at the bar, but she gives him the cold shoulder. Abel backs off.

Later, Julia tells Katia that Abel's immature, and if they x-rayed his head they'd find nothing but beer, mezcal, and motorcycles. Katia again urges Julia to tell Abel about the pregnancy. She tells Julia about Lorenzo, the boy that Abel wanted to adopt, but he died recently and Abel has been a mess ever since. He's not perfect, but who is? Julia is affected by this information.

Camilo finds Sara and offers her a giant bouquet - a bouqazo - of roses. He is charmingly, uncharacteristically awkward. He tells her the penthouse offer still stands. Sara acts like she's not interested. She grabs the roses impatiently and drives off.

Ximena and Yago go to the student art show, and then to the campus bookstore, where Yago finds Omar Guerrero's thesis in the architecture section. Eventually Sara calls, and Yago's gotta go. Ximena says she was going to invite him to dinner. Too bad!

Katia and Teo are working at the bar. Teo is frustrated with Abel's attitude. Katia tells him not to give up on Abel, because he's going to need a friend soon. "Don't tell anyone, but..." Katia blabs about the pregnancy and says Julia wants an abortion. Distressed, Teo wants to tell Abel immediately! Katia tries to dissuade him.

Sara meets Yago at his house and begs for a chance to show him that she's sorry. "You need someone close to Camilo," she says. "He's in love with me." She wants revenge on the man who killed her sister.

Morning. Bruno finally comes home. Melina looks like she's waited up all night for him. Bruno says they need to talk about Yago Vila.

At Fidel's place, Abel is telling Fidel & co that Lucio is being pressured by Camilo and needs to know what to do. But Yago arrives late to the meeting with a bonus: Sara in a blindfold. She's ready to help.

My heart sank when I saw this morning that the episode was titled "Unexpected Pregnancy." I was afraid they meant Sara! NOOOOooooOOOOOOOooooO!!!!

Thanks, Julie! There was a lot going on in this episode.

All I can say about Julia being pregnant by Abel is that he better hope Camilo doesn't find out! Not sure how Fidel will react either. Homicidal fathers are definitely not part of the tn cliche playbook for unexpected pregnancies, but in this tn it could very well be the result. Yipes!

Glad the writers listened to me for once about Sara being the perfect double agent. Unlike Lucio, she can also stay cool under pressure and lie like a champ.

The conversation between her and Yomar got very emotional, especially for him, but I'm glad he didn't just forgive and forget.

I think almost everyone now knows that Yago is Omar, which a couple of exceptions:

- Lucio still doesn't know, but everyone around him does. He is going to JUST DIE when he finds out.

- Jonas doesn't know, but Bruno and Melina will probably fill him in soon.

- I'm not sure if Julia knows, but she never knew Omar to begin with, so that's prolly not a big deal. And of course Ximena doesn't know about any of this.

- And Mati doesn't know that Yago is Omar is his biological father. Boy, is that going to be a weird conversation - if it ever takes place. Maybe it shouldn't.

It worries me that Yago has made a big deal about Sara not telling Camilo or Lucio, since Camilo already knows. When Camilo reveals his knowledge, everyone on Team Yago will think Sara betrayed them.

Lucio should be the last person to find out Yago's real identity. He is absolutely going to lose it when he does find out.

I really don't know how they're going to handle the truth telling with Mati. Julia is an adult, and she can barely deal with the messed up truth of her parentage.

Hah Julie. Your bullet points are great. Triangles and trapezoids....arrrrgh I'm getting a geometry buzzkill here. Math subjects were not my best.

Powerful scenes between Yago and Sara in this one. Those two are clearly still deeply embedded in each other, in spite of the hatred and mistrust. Or because of...who knows? But yowza.

Hmmm...fond of Crazy Abel but he and Julia are hardly my dream couple and certainly not dream parents. But oh well...Mother Nature has spoken. Or has she?

Thanks for that zippy summation lady.

I like Julia and Abel as a couple. At first glance, it doesn't make much sense. But I think they can help one another grow. I am skeptical that Abel will survive the Gran Fin, though.

I have envisioned an alternate scenario in which almost everyone redeems themselves, survives, and goes to jail. (Except for Camilo and Fidel, who fall off of a roof during a struggle.) That would be a "happy ending." Mati gets raised by Melina and Jonas until Yago and Sara get out of jail. Selma helps Julia raise Abel's child until Abel gets out, if he ever does (he's got some murders to answer to). Katia and Teo get together when their sentences are finished. Lucio bribes a prison guard for some rope and hangs himself. Hernan dies trying to save his sneaker collection in a house fire.

Oh and Ximena sells all of her art to Mr. Becker and is able to get a car and doesn't have to ride the Metro any more. She and Bruno have a scandalous romance. (I don't know if Bruno goes to Ximena's school, but I'm just trying to tie up loose ends.) Did I forget anyone?

Thank you Julie.

Julie: Awesome recap. Daddy Michell has no idea that Julia is preggers either.

Tofie: This double-agent thing will blow up in Team Avengers' faces!

Judy B: Bold Prediction: Julia will get an abortion for obvious reasons.

Vivi: I still don't like Ximema & Lucio will find out that Yago is Omar when Sara rats out Yago.

Julie: I don't see Julia keeping the baby. She's terminating the pregnancy!

I disagree about Julia getting an abortion, Steve. Julia seemed very thoughtful when Katia told her about Abel wanting to adopt a boy who died (Lorenzo).

All that and more will be added to the recap after I get home and eat my dinner in a few hours.

The Bro-mance issues between Yago/Abel & Abel/Teo ROFLOL.

Who's the actress, who portrayed Selma ? She's awesome.

Julie,

Thanks for the recap of these main points from last night's episode. Very thorough yet concise.

I was impressed that Omar had a bound thesis in the college library. Cool. I still think he's a jerk.

Even though I've done a complete turnaround on Sara, I can't help but like Ximena more and more. She is so fresh and refreshing and yet she's also seems somewhat worldly. I really like both actresses.

I'm not certain who has the worst 2 dads, Julia with Camilo and Fidel or Matías with Lucio and Yago. Of course Matías has the disadvantage of having Camilo on deck as a potential dad #3.

Who wants to join me in a first and final toast to Damián who finally lived up to his potential in literally the very last moment?

Carlos

Well, Carlos, I'll jump at any excuse to drink. So here's to Damian. Now we know the answer to the question if it would kill him to do something nice just once in his life.

Steve- The name of the Selma actress is Karina Gigi. She mostly does movie and stage acting in Mexico. I think she has a really interesting face. Not the norm in tns. I like how she's always elegantly put together, like Sara.

The full recap is up!

Well, Fidel's next plan to kill Camilo will be to deliver some of Ximena's "art" work to him -- one look & Camilo will never recover.

Running Joke:
Bringing people into Fidel's lair blindfolded (to his displeasure). Who's next? Ximena! Yago will tell Camilo that he has a plan; he will sneak Ximena into Camilo's green house, where Ximena will improve it like the Sistine Chapel, even gilding the flowers with various punk colors. Camilo will then have a nervous breakdown when he sees it.

Alternative plan: Fidel & henchmen swoop down on the greenhouse, murder all the plants except the one that is Camilo's favorite, which he takes away hostage. In on the attack will be Abel, who will go after prized plants with his needle-nosed pliers. Fidel will notify Camilo that Fidel will raise the plant as his own. The plant will chant "FEED ME," & Fidel will feed CAmilo's men to it one by one. A plant psychologist will be hired to train the plant to look on Fidel as its Daddy.

Next Episode we get to see Damian in Heaven -- he ran a con on St Peter at the gate to get in. There in Heaven, Damian gets some angels to play poker with him & collects all their halos and harps.

Speaking of Angels: I recognize the father of Omar/Yago as the ornery angel in Cachito de Cielo, a telenovela that started as a great comedy until some religious types were outraged over a romancing priest kissing Mighty Pepperoni (Cachito as an imposter really) & got the network to change the plot, ruining the comedy. The same angel actor was also the guardian angel of Frijolito in Amarte Asi (doing also one scene as a gruñon waiter earlier in the show)/.

Has there ever been a story that explored in such depth the concept of vengeance, refusing to forgive? Could they have a Moby Dick ending with Camilo & Fidel chained together duking it out? Imagine them chained to each other in a prison cell.

Great job, Julie. Thank you!

Enoch- I do think it's the Writers' running gag to have someone brought into Fidel's lair, blindfolded, without his permission, ticking him off. :)

I'm with Yago on this one. I think Sara is an excellent candidate for a double agent. But I think working with her will only complicate Yago's feelings for her even further.

"Mati offers that perhaps Damian has become a better person! Sara says let's hope so, for the sake of the other ghosts." LOL! Poor Damian has been dissed so many times since his death. Carlos- I won't share that toast with you, but I'll give you a friendly nod across the Patio's bar.

Fidel has every right to be furious at Yago's stupidity!

Enoch - in Querida Enemiga, the antagonista ended up in prison, where another inmate turned out to be the mother who had abandoned her in a trashcan when she was born. The last we saw of those two, they were physically fighting - strangling one another, I think. Not exactly the same as you describe with Fidel and Camilo chained together, but not so different, either.

The one issue I have with Sara as double-agent is that she's NOT RELIABLE.

That's a pretty big issue.

She's way more level-headed and reliable than Lucio. THAT would have been a huge mistake. There is no reason now for Sara to betray them to either Camilo (whom she now hates) or Lucio (whom she has despised for a while now).

Thank you for the recap Julie, and thank you too Vivi for yesterday's. I barely had time to watch yesterday, no time to comment.

I do not like where this is going. I do NOT want to see Yago and Sara together, but that's precisely what's going to end up happening. Sara will magically be redeemed and she will live happily ever after with Yago and Mati. I will assume Lucio dies before then.

Another fear realized, the cliched fainting was a pregnancy. No one faints from being pregnant except on TNs. And I will bet all the money i have that there will be no abortion. Only TN bad girls get an abortion.

The only toast I'll be giving Damian is to his death. He saved his daughter who he loves very much, or he saved his meal ticket that he can blackmail into doing his work for him so he doesn't end up back in jail? All the mezcal to him rotting in h-e-double toothpicks.

Julia get an abortion? Has that ever happened in any telenovela when it's not the villain? I don't dislike her and Abel together, but they need therapy before bringing a child into the world. And I still have doubts at Abel surviving to the end. He tries. He tries hard to be decent, but seems to always fail. Maybe he can save Julia's life pre-abortion, and she has the kid and raises to be the success his father couldn't be.

Ximena is too pushy to be likable, but given team Ambar's history, you'd think they'd do some background check on her. She's got to be hiding something. Too sinico?

I think Ambar is a great name for a bar. Seems totally on trend. They'd be decorated with giant pieces of plastic to look like amber with ancient bugs in them, and have a custom cocktail made with locally sourced ingredients. Super hip.

Kelly

Kelly- There's a hip restaurant/bar here in DC that I've been to a few time named Ambar. It serves Balkan cuisine. http://www.ambarrestaurant.com/home-page-washington/

Ambar is a good name for a bar in general, but it's weird to say "Abel is at Ambar" (or "IN Ambar") when Ambar used to be a person!

I still don't think Sara is going to survive this TN. I think she'll die proving herself to Yago.

Julie- Ha! Good point. Although Vivi's Balkan place really looks good.

Normally we talk about who will die by the end. Maybe the list would be shorter if we talk about who might survive. I'll go with Matias, Julia, Selma, Bruno and parents, the orchids. I like Katia and Teo, but Yago keeps blabbing his secrets and putting them at risk. I don't have high hopes.

Kelly

Kelly- I like your survivors list. I think they are good bets.

I think the orchids should die too, to release the souls of Camilo's victims.

Kelly, do you mean to say that Yago dies too? I'm not so sure about that one. I think he ends up in jail for the crimes he HAS committed.

When's the recap from Thursday night being posted ?

Steve, looks like it'll be up in about 15 minutes.

Cathyx: ITA. I never heard of a woman fainting for pregnancy except in a novela. While this one is a different species from the insipid cookie-cutter telenovelas (cinderella maid vs wicked novia; the impossibly identical twins routine), a few conventions may be maintained, like mistaken/unknown (groan) parentage. There is the sure-fire identification of the embarrassed woman, puking & fainting. IMHO, the getting pregnant in the story possibly marks out a big difference between Hollywood stories & Telenovelas and gives more realism to the telenovelas.

I can't recall ever seeing a telenovela where a woman goes thru with killing her unborn baby. In Amarte Asi there was reference to Nacho's (Mauricio Ochmann's) having knocked up a gringa years ago in the distant past, & the gringa got an abortion, but not Margarita/Litzy, the good Mexican girl, equally knocked up by Nacho. Methinks it is the Hispanic culture revulsion for this.

Someone above referred to where this is going. Boy, I don't have a clue. How about everyone out in the ocean in boats fighting at sea, when a big storm with a water spout opens, & everyone goes down the hole, Fidel & Camilo still grappling as they sink. We see Damian in Hades laughing at them as they all head there. Or should Franklin Graham come to town, they all repent at his preaching, & in the final scene they all sing Kum Bah Yah, Camilo & Fidel in a fraternal embrace.
