A Que No Me Dejas #33 - Gonzalo is a Terrible Friend and Flavio Is A Date-Rapist

Adrian promises Julieta that even though they won’t be in the same place, he will always be there for her, no matter what. Julieta is thankful for his love and support. Adrian also promises to talk to the doctor about letting her out of the hospital now that she’s dealt with the trauma of seeing of father’s suicide and keeping it bottled in.

Beto asks Paty if there is a job opening in the hotel as a valet or anything but she says there isn’t at this time.

Elisa closes the sale of the Chetumal house. She gets a check with the advance and the realtor lets her know in a few weeks they will transfer over the title of the house. Elisa thanks her and wishes the new buyers all the happiness in their new home.

Adrian tells the doctor that she seems more calm since she’s been there and the doctor agrees, however, she tells him that she would like a couple of days to continue the treatment from the hospital then they will slowly reincorporate her into society and she will continue her treatments in Playa Linda with supervised medications.

Omar Montero, Camilo’s friend, interviews Paulina about her new position in his restaurant. She will be in charge of bringing and promoting new events at the restaurant. She will make her own schedule and get paid a salary plus commission based on the success of each event.

In a surprising move, Elisa reveals that she got the money out of the house before Gonzalo did anything to remove Monica from the title and leave her with nothing and not to run off with everything (yet). Elisa says to herself that Monica will eventually thank her for this, like she has for everything else.

Leonel is pissed that Gonzalo has taken away all his power but Nuria tells him to be patient because everything will change soon. She tells him Gonzalo won’t adhere to the divorce and, at the same time, her unconditional support, will make him trust her more than anyone else in the family.

Paty gives Gonzalo the key to his room and tells him Monica called, she would like him to visit his kids as soon as possible. He’s annoyed at the prospect of her demand.
Monica thinks that the time has come for them to be a family with Gonzalo at her side (delusional as ever) while kissing his photo. Ines and Gonzalo though are not as happy as they think about how everything went wrong and their fractured relationship.

Paulina and Adrian are another couple not having the best time. Paulina wants Mauricio and her child to grow up as siblings but without Adrian and Adrian drinks away Paulina for the night.

The next morning, the lawyer handling Mauricio’s adoption tells Gonzalo there is a problem with the adoption.

Odette tells Adrian that she will go to Spain first because it’s not a good idea to let Julieta know they will be going together, her treatment and attitude change will be gradual and she doesn’t want her to be an obstacle. Adrian, only seeing Odette has a friend, doesn’t think she’ll be a problem.

Paulina tells Gaston that she got another part time. He’s happy she’s progressing and then asks to visit Ines at home since she’s finally out of the hospital. Paulina tells him it’s okay.

Flavio goes to pick up Karen for the bar opening but she’s surprised. After her rejection she thought they wouldn’t speak for a while. He tells her they agreed to be friends and she agrees. He then notices the dying flowers he gave her and laments he won’t be able to bring her more flowers. He then proceeds to crush one as he says Camilo now has all her attention. Karen tells him that Camilo will never be hers.

Gonzalo visits Ines and tells her that social worker found out about the divorce. He then warns her that if they get divorced, social services will take away Mauricio.

Monica meets Elisa and they talk about the fact that Ines is alive and well and Elisa did absolutely wrong (Elisa is also delusional). Monica doesn’t agree with her tactic but she does agree that they bared fruit as Ines is divorcing Gonzalo even if Gonzalo hasn’t reached out to her yet. She comments that even divorce he still might not want to be with her.

Odette tells Dario that she’s actually leaving early to Spain in order to fix her situation at the university. He doesn’t think it’s okay that she hides the truth but she doesn’t care. (Funny-as-hell side note: Odette goes to the door, opens it and checks that no one is listening! Professional novela watcher right there :D)

Ines thought the letter Edgar signed would be sufficient but Gonzalo tells her it states he leaves the child to the marriage of Murat Urrutia, not a divorced Ines and Gonzalo. The only solution is for Gonzalo to return home and tell the social worker it was all a misunderstanding. Ines doesn’t like the idea and Gonzalo leaves it up to her to decide.

Dario then comments about his own relationship with Gisela; since Jaime got there she pays more attention to him but he can’t decide if to leave her be or not because when he asked her if she felt anything for Jaime, she denied everything.

Gonzalo then asks Ines if it’s true she asked Micaela to throw away all the flowers he brought her. He hopes that she doesn’t throw away their love like that and to remember: Mauricio’s future is in her hands now. He leaves.

Adrian visits his father’s grave. He tells him that when he has children he will never be the coward he was, he will never leave them alone like he did. He thinks tells him he understands while Gonzalo never liked him for Paulina. It was his father’s fault: his fraud attempt and eventual suicide destroyed Julieta and caused his own children’s unhappiness.

Elisa tells Monica that she’s close to her objective and since she told him not to look for her till the divorce was underway she now has to look for him. Monica is done chasing Gonzalo: she tells Elisa that if he wants to marry her, he has to look for her. Elisa tells her to be proactive though, he’s vulnerable and lonely now so it’s the time to strike.

Paulina explains to Ines that Mauricio escaped while she was in the hospital. She doesn’t know what he will do if they take him away. Ines finds it strange that the social worker found out about the divorce since no one outside of the family knew. Paulina warns her to be careful with her dad; it could all be a trick. Paulina suggests Alfonso help them with the proceedings.

Gonzalo tells Nuria that, while he doesn’t know how the social worker found out the divorce, he will use it to his advance so Ines doesn’t divorce him. Nuria confesses she told the social worker. She did it for him so Ines would forget the divorce. Gonzalo isn’t sure she really did it for him but Nuria is ready: she tells him that while she helps and supports him unconditionally, he treats her fiancée like dirt and that affects her. She begs him to reconsider.

Adrian explains to Jaime what actually happened with the Ezquerra Association. Their father tried to steal everything and Gonzalo saved the money; Julieta’s trauma caused her to remember it differently. Jaime tells him it’s best to forget the past and look toward the future.

Karen is getting wasted at the bar opening. By wasted, I mean Flavio keeps handing her drinks like their going out of style and mixing all different types of alcohol. Karen thinks she’s having fun but doesn’t realize Flavio is too sleazy for the friend game.

Jaime tells Julieta that they need to move on from all that’s happened. Julieta is sad that her father wasn’t the man she thought. Jaime gives her a kiss and tells her he’s going to be with her to help and support her.

Gisela and Dario are looking at houses for Jaime. She tells the realtor it’s the perfect house for him. Dario comments that she knows a lot about Jaime’s tastes then segues into his own “proposal:” Gisela should move in with him when Jaime is out of the house because he’s no spring chicken and wants a family soon.

Karen is beyond gone at this point and Flavio is eating her with his eyes. He starts kissing her and she tries to pull away.

Nuria confesses to Leonel that she actually wanted to ruin Mauricio’s adoption but it worked in her favor because she told Gonzalo that she did it for him. Pretty soon they will be indispensible to Gonzalo and he will appreciate their help. She kisses him and Leonel wipes his mouth.

Alfonso brings a copy of the letter Edgar signed and tells them that if the social worker finds his current environment hostile and unstable the adoption will fall through. Camilo suggests they find out what the social worker knows…if it’s only about the divorce or if they know about Gonzalo’s double life as well. Alfonso promises to investigate.

Gonzalo visits Alan and Rene with (you guessed it!) gifts. He then tells them that he will spend the afternoon with them by the pool. When they go change, Monica tells him she knows everything and wants to know what exactly happened: did he leave because he loves her or because she kicked him out? The kids arrive before they can get to the bottom of their issues.

Alfonso tells Ines she might have to put her divorce plans on hold during the adoption process. He knows that it would be a sacrifice but it would be temporary while the adoption is finalized. Ines doesn’t like that she will have to lie to the social worker. She then starts to feel bad and Paulina and Camilo go to get her the pills. Alfonso apologizes for lying to her about Gonzalo.

The kitchen trio is discussion the adoption: they are thankful for Alfonso’s help and are glad Alfonso is on Ines’ side. Chelo tells her that he should be since Gonzalo told Ines that the one having the affair was Alfonso…Paulina and Camilo hear everything and demand to know what they’re talking about.

Flavio takes an intoxicated Karen to his room and goes in for the kill: Karen is dizzy and hot so Flavio begins to undress her and then himself. Karen is too weak to fight him back and kisses him back.

Camilo asks Chelo if what she said is true and Micaela confirms it. Camilo goes to tell Alfonso but Paulina asks him to hold off, as Ines is not well. When they return to the living room, Alfonso and Camilo leave and Ines asks Paulina if she noticed anything strange with Camilo. Paulina didn’t. Outside the Murat mansion, Camilo tells Alfonso that Gonzalo made Ines believe that the one with the lover of 10 years was him.

Gonzalo is racing with the children and having fun when Monica sees them and smiles, thinking that they finally look like a real family.

Jaime asks Odette about her conquest and she tells him she’s taking it slow as Adrian almost noticed her real intentions. Adrian comes back and they change the conversation. They drink to Julieta’s health and Odette’s trip. Adrian tells Jaime that he should come visit them in Spain soon, which doesn’t make Odette too happy. She leaves to buy some new clothes for the trip.

The kitchen trio is disappointed in their recent actions. They need to stop gossiping in the kitchen and hopes it doesn’t get them fired. Micaela hopes not as she’s really happy there. Chelo asks her where she used to work but Micaela tells her that she prefers not to remember it.

Jaime tells Adrian that he is taking Julieta to Playa Linda as soon as she’s out of the hospital. Adrian agrees that its for the best and then tells him he will stay behind and supervise the movers and sale of the house and agency. Jaime laments their move but welcomes the future ahead of them.

Alfonso finds Gonzalo and punches him. Gonzalo punches him back but Alfonso is not taking this one laying down and punches Gonzalo again and, as Camilo watches, keeps punching him and punching him and punching him…

Thanks, Alfredo! It's about time Alfonso knew that while he's been totally loyal to Gonzalo, the Gonz had NO qualms about betraying, lying, and throwing him under the bus. Keep punching him, Al!

Monica is very delusional. I was glad to see that while Elisa was being sneaky with the sale of the house, she was still doing it to benefit Monica and the kids.

I'm so mad that this adoption thing has derailed Ines being able to give the Gonz the boot, right now. Ugh! Gaston is going to be so disappointed.

Thank you for your excellent retelling, Superalfie! In spite of your current family commitments, you pulled double-recapping duty, covering two consecutive episodes, and you contributed an insightful analysis about Uni-Televisa's latest woes in Monday's and Tuesday's discussion threads! Basically, you put the Super in Superalfie!

I KNEW IT! Didn't I tell you Flavio set off my jerk radar? I think the actor got good directions and did a commendable job in rationing out the sleaze because his first couple of appearance he was playing the attractive and sweet as pie new hottie on the block. Then, we started getting hints that he is trouble: The subtle leering glimmer in his eyes, his insistence that Karen ought to cut off all ties with Paulina and lean on him exclusively (remember his emphatically creepy: "She (Pau) left your life and I arrived!"), his "intensity" and pushiness, his contained anger when Karen rejects him and/or insists on rekindling her friendship with Pau and/or mentions Camilo... Basically, there were some alarming signs that Karen should've detected but the biggest one was his insistence that they go out drinking the night after she rejects him. Really? What girl in her right mind would get plastered on a night out with a complete stranger who also happens to be a creep and whom she has just turn down a day before? Don't get your drink on with creepy douchebags! This goes for both genders and all sexual orientations! I hope this TN highlights the issue of consent in the next episode. Even if we set aside Flavio's predatory behavior of feeding Karen Lord-knows what alcoholic concoctions (did he slip her something else as well?), the fact that the girl was too drunk to give consent while he, the less drunk (Barely tipsy? Totally sober?) party assertively pursued intercourse qualifies as rape.

Mauricio's problematic adoption is throwing a monkey's wrench into Inés's divorce plans. Unless the writers pull the rag from under us once again, I can totally tell where this is going. One of two things will happen, in my opinion. Either:
1) Inés agrees to stay married to The Gonz and accept him back into the mansion until Mau's adoption process is finalized, with all the repercussions this would have on Inés's health, Mónica's pipe dreams, Elisa's schemes and Gastón's amorous aspirations; or
2) Camilo convinces Paulina to marry him so they can legally adopt Mau and save him from being taken to an orphanage, with all the repercussions this would've on Adrián (who would find out and speed up his trip to Spain), Nuria (who would go berserk and hatch some evil plan) and Karen (I don't believe she is over Camilo so quickly).

As much as I enjoy this TN, there are a couple of bits and pieces that annoy me to no end and one of them is the portrayal of mental healthcare. In a previous episode, when Julieta sought psychiatric help (OK, when she was coerced into seeking it), the doc (mis-)diagnosed her with OCD after a single consultation, gave the patient some pills and told her to come back in a month. That was it. And we were talking about a patient who had displayed episodes of violent behavior, who is subject to hallucinations (according to the testimony of her relatives) and who is a danger to herself and others. In this episode, we got to see Adrián suggest "to talk to the doctor about letting her (Julieta) out of the hospital now that she’s dealt with the trauma of seeing of father’s suicide and keeping it bottled in." Vitch, please. Are you out of your mind? Your sister has just uncovered the principal root cause that thrust her down an abyss of serious mental health issues! This is only the begininning! The road to recovery (or at least to a semblance of emotional stability) is very long and arduous! And what about Jaime shrugging it all off and saying that the past is the past and it's now time to look forward? That's akin to telling a clinically depressed person to "Get over it!" Of course, this is just a telenovela and I gotta lighten up but telenovelas reach a large audience, including socio-economic categories that may not have the means, education or access to information to seek help when they or their loved ones battle mental health issues. This is as good an opportunity as any to lend a helping hand in that regard. This point actually pertains to the conversation Superalfie, Vivi and I had earlier about the need for telenovelas to discuss more current topics that are of interest to society as a whole, beyond the classic telenovela rosa, where social mobility can be achieved through marrying into money and all life's evils can be prayed away.

One last thing and I'll quit hijacking the thread, I promise! As I read through the recap, certain elements including talk about Gonzalo's fitness to be Mau's father and Adrián's reproaches to his father's tombstone, made one of this TN overarching themes jump at me. It was there from Episode 1 but I didn't pay it any attention until today: Terrible fathers. In a telenovela landscape rife with toxic mothers (we get at least a couple of them in every novela), AQNMD gives us a collection of dreadful daddies. Édgar, Gonzalo, Joaquín (Olmedo, Julieta's and Adrián's father) , Beto's father, Mónica's father, Leonel (the accidental father)... The only good father in this show is Alfonso Fonseca. Adrián would make a good dad, as he vowed to be by his father grave, but he doesn't get to be a dad to his child because Pau says so.

Thanks again, Superalfie and everyone! In a couple of days, I will be internet for a good while, for as long as the good people at the local telecom company decide. I'm nearly done moving out and the new house needs a new telephone and internet installation. I'll prepare quick recaps and schedule them for next week and the week after. Be well, amigowz, and "see" you when I see you! :)

I meant to say that I'll be internet-less. I swear I typed it but my brain and my keyboard must've conspired to erase it: Wipe that nonsense out, keyboard! "Internet-less" is not even a word! :D

Nandicta- I'll add another bad father-figure to the mix-- Chelo's godfather/uncle. When she told Beto on their first date that she had been orphaned at an early age and went to live with her godparents, she spoke about how great her godmother was, but clammed up about her godfather and said he was a bad man. At the time, I got the impression that he sexually abused her. She was adamant about NEVER going back to that place.

I'm actually hopeful that the writers WILL get into a deeper discussion on consent (Karen did try to resist, but was way too far gone to provide consent), and mental health. Seemed to me that Jaime and Adrian reacted the way a lot of people would-- you must be all better now because we know what caused the problem. I'm hoping they will be quickly proven wrong (and I'm sure they will), and realize that Juli needs longer-term, more intensive mental health care. But before that happens, I want to see her give Odette a good choking, like she did with Pau. :)

Thanks, Vivi. I had totally forgotten about Chelo's molester "uncle". I think she said he was married to her godmother but I'm not sure whether he was her godfather or not. In any case, you are absolutely right, the way Chelo reacted indicates that she has suffered some form of sexual abuse. The usually chirpy and happy-go-lucky Chelo just tensed up in a manner different to how she reacted to Édgar's violent threats. This makes me think that the abuse went beyond physical violence.

Your last comment cracked me up! I couldn't agree more! Seeing Julieta strangle the ever-loving shiitake out of Odette is one of my main motivations for sticking around! The writers can do whatever they want with the other characters, I'm a happy camper as long as they throw in a scene of Odette being choked. She can survive it, I don't care, just give me the choking part. I felt robbed by Inés's calm reaction to the explosive revelations about Gonzalo's double life. Where's the mighty slap that was supposed to make Gonzalo's head spin like that girl from the Exorcist? Which reminds me, can we give Alfonso a porra and a Mexican wave for punching Gonzalo over and over again! You go Alfonso! :)

Nandicta: Did I just hear date rape ?

WHAT THE EXPLETIVE ?

Daddy Murat (AKA The Gonz) is still a conniving, manipulative, secretive, control freak!

I want to see his Karmageddon!

Alfredo good recap thank you. That gonzo clown person is really a nasty sleezy good-for-nothing jerk. He cares for no one but himself. Monica is a
Pittifil woman. She deserves just what
She's gettin. Sorry for kids. Its good they have Paulina, once she gets it together that is.
