Silvana

On the first of this week's two Telemundo y Más pages, deb asked whether Steve's boss called Stella a fishmonger. I just went back to the episode, and Steve's boss says that Stella parece vendedora de mercado, which I took to mean something like a sales clerk. Stella then says soy vendedora, pero de pescado, y a mucha honra: I'm a seller, but of fish, and I'm proud of it.

According to my dictionary, the word for fishwife or fishmonger is pescadera.

SILVANA

I took 'vendedora de mercado' to mean a market stall trader, i.e. barking out the day's offers, etc. so lower class and 'common' (his opinion, not mine. We went to Valencia in Spain this past summer and the beautiful old Mercado Central was my favorite part of town!)

Silvana

Muchas gracias, Jude Gray. I think your description of a "market stall trader" fits Stella perfectly, and the term is thus much better than the blander and more general "sales clerk."

Silvana. I am assuming Antonio José will try to attend Lupita's first communion--that seems to be what they've been building up to. Wonder if he will be arrested en route, during the ceremony (which would no doubt irritate the Miami diocese), immediately after, or once again escape the inept detectives chasing him. Oh, the suspense! :)

Silvana

SpanProf, I agree, it seems almost certain that AJ will try to attend Lupita's first communion. We've been hearing about it quite frequently starting with the very first episode. Though the writers do play with us, it's very hard for me to believe that all this mention is just a red herring. But exactly what will happen when AJ tries to come? You've done a good job of describing some likely possibilities. Ya veremos.

Silvana

Just a quick note to say the hurricane completely missed me so I do have electricity and will be able to write tonight's recap. Hope anyone else in Florida is safe!

Silvana. Another possibility is that having seen his youngest child receive her first communion, AJ may take the detectives up on their negotiation offer. After all, waiting for Lupita's confirmation would be a long time to hide out. Almost makes me wish I was a bookie. :)

SILVANA

J - I glad the hurricane missed you! And .... thank you for your recap of Wednesday night's episode!!!
I have no idea where our Telemundo signal comes from, but it was a botchy patchy hot transmission mess over the cable waves. Your reception was probably better than ours, and I'm waaay inland! With the help of the recap and English subtitles, I caught what was going on.

That conversation between Manuel and Stella had me cracking up, with all his suggestions for electro-shock therapy, psychiatrists, etc. She is so delusional while he is not.

Jude Gray - I will stand in line with you, any time, if you will share your thoughts! They were great.

Now that we know WHO Steve is, I sort of like him. He never gave off creep-factor vibes. Hopefully, he and Stella will continue. She was wrong to slap him for conning her, when she was conning him at the same time.

The writers have maintained a Lupita/AJ relationship, what with her notes left in the tree, and such. Would not surprise me, either, if AJ tries to sneak into Lupi's first holy communion.

SILVANA

Friday night's episode ..... I actually got to watch this one! (squee!) and am looking forward to the recap.

Is anyone else having trouble with cable signal of Telemundo? Gah.... tiling/pixellating and sound going in and out? This happens from time to time and it is verrra annoying.

Silvana. Omg! (as MJ would say) one of my predictions actually came true! :)

Silvana. Well, ok, granted, I predicted just about every conceivable possibility.

Silvana sin Lana – Friday, October 7 – Capítulo 56, part 1/3

Days later. The Villaseñors are all ready for Lupita’s First Communion. She is extremely excited and loves her dress. When Benji arrives, she tells him not to get jealous because she invited Jorge to take pictures for her dad. Lupita isn’t sure if her dad will make it to the church or not. Majo tells her not to worry about that now and takes her upstairs to comb her greñas (wild mane/mop of hair). Angie and Benji decide to wait outside. Trini knows that Chivis is sad about the AJ situation and Lupita wanting him to be there.

Juanito has bad news for Don Benito. The singer woke up without a voice and had to cancel. Don Benito thinks his present for the First Communion is ruined, but Juanito can play the music from his tablet.

At the church, Chivis assures Lupita that her dad is thinking of her. The padre starts talking. Trini notes that it feels like Lupita’s getting married. “Speaking of getting married” Don Benito starts off saying… but ends with how nice it will be when Margarita gets married.

Benji is annoyed that Jorge is filming Angie. She tells him to ignore him, especially since this is Lupita’s day.

Majo looks behind her at Vicente. Andrés asks why she let go of his hand. She claims she thought of her dad and it made her sad.

Lucha seems a little surprised that Mauro is Catholic. “Aren’t you?” he wonders. She says it’s a long story and she’ll tell him later. When she’s in church, she counts the pews. Mauro jokes that’s not good because when they get married, it will be in a church. She laughs and says she doesn’t believe in marriage, only love. Mauro puts his arm around her and kisses her head. She notices Andrés is half looking back/listening to them and she gets a little uncomfortable.

Vicente asks Manuel if it wasn’t a little risky inviting Poncho since he could have brought Stella with him.

The Padre mentions mothers and fathers and Trini gets annoyed since she knows that he knows that AJ is not there for Lupita. Don Benito tries to calm her down.

The Padre invites Lupita up to the altar since she has something to read to everyone. It’s a letter she wrote saying the things that she knows her father would like to say to her. As she starts reading, AJ slips into the church and sits in the last row, without a disguise. Somehow she doesn’t see him.

Now it’s time for the Eucharist. After Lupita receives her wafer and turns around, she sees AJ and cries out Papá! She runs down the aisle and jumps into his arms. Majo follows her and hugs her dad too.

Angie tells her mom to stay calm. They can’t forget what he did. Chivis tells her that she can go to her dad if she wants. She slowly walks up to him but doesn’t hug him. Trini convinces Chivis that they should go too, but as they approach him, the detectives enter the church and tell AJ he’s under arrest.

Silvana sin Lana – Friday, October 7 – Capítulo 56, part 2/3

AJ is handcuffed and led outside. Lupita keeps crying. He tells her to take care of her sisters and mother. He tells Chivis to call Rafael. After the cops drive off with AJ, Lupita asks Angie if AJ did bad things. Majo assures her that their dad is not bad. He just made some mistakes. Manuel tells Chivis he is there for her and her family if they need anything.

Dom is still cleaning up the dog’s messes. Stella remarks that the dog has been acting strange lately. Dom convinces her that it’s because of her anger towards Steve; the dog can sense her emotions. She asks where Poncho is and is angry that she wasn’t invited to Pedrito’s First Communion and that he went without her.

Don Benito and Juanito return home early and tell Margarita what happened. Being a terrible person, she starts laughing and asks how Angie reacted. Don Benito scolds her for making fun of others and goes upstairs to change. Margarita pretends to be sorry but as soon as her grandfather is gone, she asks Juanito to tell her everything. “How was Angie? Was she crying?”

Back home, everyone tries to console Lupita. Chivis talked to Rafael and he’ll help her get in to talk to him that day. Lupita asks about her party that afternoon. Chivis refuses to cancel it even though Trini wants to. Lupita goes next door to tell Pedrito the party is still on.

At the Gallardos, everyone feels bad for the neighbors. Manuel laments that the girls are paying for the mistakes of their parents. He tells the kids they need to support them. He makes a comment about everyone already being friendly with one of the women next door, and Lucha points out that means she’s left with Trini. Lupita knocks on the door. Pedrito opens it and hugs her.

Poncho returns home and tells Dom and Stella about AJ being arrested at the church. Being a terrible person, Stella is overly excited, thinking that she will have an ally in keeping Chivis and Manuel apart. Dom says what we’re all thinking. Ay díos mío! Esto está empezando otra vez (Oh my god, this is starting again.)

Chivis finds out where they are holding AJ and she can go to talk to him now. Majo is going with her, but Angie says she doesn’t want to see him. Majo and Angie fight about their dad. Angie ends up going upstairs and Chivis and Majo head out. Trini wants to stay home, but then changes her mind when Chivis asks her to take charge of Lupita’s party. Chivis and Majo leave without her and she complains about not knowing what to do for a kid’s party.

Trini goes upstairs to talk to Angie. She wants to be alone but Trini won’t leave. Angie doesn’t know what to do. Should be loyal to her father, knowing everything that he did, or to her mother, seeing everything she’s gone through? Trini reminds her that there is a third option: be loyal to them both. It’s too difficult for her and she is too angry. Trini admits that she is also very mad at AJ even if she doesn’t show it. Yo hubiera sorrajado el cáliz en la cabeza de tu papá (I would have hit him on the head with the chalice). But she also would have helped him up afterwards because at a certain point, they all have to forgive him. Angie doesn’t think she can, and the kiss she gave him in the church [?? I don’t remember seeing that…] was a goodbye kiss because her father is never going to be who he was before.

Silvana sin Lana – Friday, October 7 – Capítulo 56, part 3/3

AJ is taken to a holding room. He is very smug and continues to lie about not renting a car under an alias. The detective receives word that his lawyer set up a 10 minute meeting with Chivis. AJ jokes “a social visit or conjugal visit?” The detective is not amused and says he will personally make sure that AJ stays in jail.

Rafael tells Chivis and Majo that he tried to get AJ to turn himself in several times but he was too reckless and stubborn. Chivis did not come there to hear his opinion, but to talk to AJ. Rafael is trying to help his client and friend, and he wants to help the family too. Chivis doesn’t want his friendship, especially after what he did to her. Rafael gestures with his head towards Majo but Chivis flat out tells him that she hides nothing from her daughters. Only Chivis can go see AJ now. Majo prefers to wait in the car so she doesn’t have to be near Rafael.

Jorge visits Angie to tell her she can always count on him for anything she needs, even if it’s just to change a lightbulb. She thanks him and says maybe they can be good friends. Jorge agrees. She asks him for a favor: talk to Margarita and make sure she doesn’t gossip about what happened at school since Lupita is already having a really hard time. Of course he will. He also comments that she looks pretty and how nice it was of her to give her dad a kiss in church. [Am I the only one who missed this kiss??]

Margarita is already spreading the gossip on the phone. Jorge arrives to ask her not to tell anyone at school since Angie and Lupita have already been through a lot. She gets angry that he thinks she would do that. He reminds her that she has done bad things before. She responds that she did all those things for/because of him, trying to justify her actions by making them his fault. She shuts the door in his face.

Being a terrible person, AJ plays the victim when Chivis starts the conversation with “How could you?” Oh, but can’t she see how bad he is since he’s been in jail for probably one whole hour? Chivis can’t believe what he’s saying. “How do you think your girls feel?!” He ruined Lupita’s day. AJ couldn’t stay away though. He was dying to see her and hug her. He didn’t think the police would follow him to the church. And he had decided to turn himself in. Chivis doesn’t believe him. AJ assures her that he will get out soon and things will go back to normal. What he did wasn’t that bad, he swears, and it can happen to anyone. Chivis asks what he did then. If it wasn’t so bad, then why did he flee the country and why is he in jail now? He can’t tell her anything without talking to Rafael first. Chivis continues: how is it possible that he can’t even tell his own wife? AJ perks up a little upon hearing the word esposa. Chivis won’t fall into his trap though; she is still going to divorce him.

Silvana

J, you've outdone yourself with this magnificent recap! I feel as if I'm watching the episode again, with all the important details, plus some delightful commentary from you. I especially enjoyed your parallel "Being a terrible person" sentence starters for Margarita, Stella, and AJ. And I too was somewhat surprised that Lupita didn't spot AJ when she was giving her speech. It's not as if there were a lot of people around him.

Speaking of seeing, I too don't remember Angie kissing AJ. For a while, she simply stood in the aisle several feet away. She then finally did come closer, and perhaps embraced the group (AJ, Majo, and Lupita). However, since both she and Jorge think she kissed AJ, I suppose she may have. She should know, after all. :-)

It occurs to me that Margarita, Stella, and AJ have something in common in addition to being "terrible people." All three are delusional. Hopefully, all three will have their delusions permanently shattered.

As always, I appreciated the Spanish phrases and translations you've provided. I looked up greñas after the show was over, but by then I'd forgotten the context, and I doubt the definition would have meant anything to me a few hours later. But now, thanks to you, it will. I also completely missed the sentence where Trini talks about what she felt like doing to AJ. I knew she said she was angry, and I knew she talked about the need to forgive, but the lovely bit about hitting him on the head with the chalice never made it to my brain.

¡Muchas gracias otra vez!

Silvana. Excellent and very complete recap, J! I didn't see Angie kiss AJ either. I especially liked your "Dom says what we're all thinking." There was a slightly funny scene when Trini et al obviously think Lupita's dress is in slightly bad taste but don't want to say so. Also, Trini says something when AJ is arrested about his obviously not having lacked for food while he was gone. I saw that the writers chose the most dramatic of the possibilities for AJ's attendance at Lupita's first communion and subsequent arrest. I didn't think that would happen. I hope all the other kids thought it was exciting and not something that ruined their first communion! I liked the scene between Trini and Angie when Trini tells her how mad she really is at AJ. Aj's contact with reality seems kind of tenuous. Margarita gets ever more revolting and vile. Maybe even Benji is too good for her. Overall, I thought this was a fairly exciting episode in which a lot happened--finally! I'm glad AJ is no longer a fugitive/stalker.

SIN SENOS

Deb, you posted a couple threads ago interesting comments on this being based on the sequel novel by Gustavo Bolivar. I don't know any Spanish, so I googled for English information on this book. I found an English review on Amazon that mentioned this second book being only Part 1, which then begs the question: Will there be a Part III to this telenovela? Someone else posted here that new telenovelas will be starting possibly Nov. 22, so maybe this sequel will leave some cliffhangers? Given that Bolivar based these books on young women he actually interviewed, he may be waiting to see how their lives play out for the sequels.

Terrific recap, J! Thanks so much for it. Yes, I was totally expecting AJ to show up in the disguise they'd shown us the night before. And I was surprised to finally see him behind bars.

I really liked the way Chivis wasn't buying anything he said when she met with him.

And, Juanita, you hit the nail on the head with the Three Delusionals. Margarita is SO rotten. I hope we're not going to be treated to poor Lupita being bullied at school because of her big mouth. They might go there just to prove to Jorge what a crap person she is.

Of course they had to have Vicente in the pew right behind Majo and Andrés. And what's up with Andrés' character anyway. He's overjoyed to be marrying Majo but is dog in the manger enough to scowl at seeing Lucha with the really good Mauro?

I concur that there was no kiss from Angie in the church. Lupita can be forgiven for her blind faith in her father, Majo not so much. She's the eldest and should be able to see AJ for what he is. Instead she argues with her sister and says her father is not a bad man, just made some mistakes.

OK, this is one of those odd telenovela things we just have to take with a grain of salt. If AJ really were the Bernie Madoff of Florida, surely there would have been some articles in the newspaper and explicit ones about what he did and that he was in the wind. So how can Majo still live in her delusional world?

I'm with Dom, rolling his eyes and saying "Here we go again!". Stella is convinced that AJ having appeared means that Chivis is back being a married woman again and that Manuel will turn to her. It would be interesting to see a bit of her in another role, for contrast. Her rapid-fire, high pitched speaking, laden with barrio idioms is hard to take. I guess when she's on screen I become a bit fresa myself and look upon her as naca.

SILVANA

J - Thank you for the recap and the translations!!!

Add me to the list of Those Who Did Not See Angie Kiss Her Father.

Margarita is truly vile. We all know that word of AJ's arrest at the church will be all over the school before Lupita and Angie hit the campus on Monday.

AJ is quite the self-centered jerk, showing up at the church without a disguise, not even thinking he is being followed or might have a scene in the church and upset his family.

Andres staring at Lucha while engaged to Majo makes me think Majo was the pawn in a power struggle (a/k/a pissing match) with Vicente and that, really, he's just not all that into her.

I'm with Dom, rolling his eyes and saying "Here we go again!". Oy veh, me, too. Yeesh!

Silvana

Novelera, I loved your admission that when Stella's on screen, you become a bit fresa and look upon her as naca. For some time now, I've been noticing that I do that, too!

Silvana. I was kind of surprised that they got the whole first communion/AJ arrest out of the way in 1 episode. I'd have thought that they would show AJ attending, maybe a recognition by Lupita(maybe not if he was trying to be incognito), then show the detectives approaching from a distance on the street, then go to the preview of the next episode, leaving viewerville wondering if they'd get AJ this time. It surprised me that everything was wrapped up so quickly. Novelera: You think Majo reads anything but the text messages on her phone? Or watches the news? Might help explain the lack of grey matter. :)

Silvana. Otoh, if AJ's crimes had gotten realistic press coverage, Chivis and Angie wouldn't be in the dark about what exactly he had done.

SILVANA

Miami being the large crime-ridden (or so I've been told for over 30+ years) city it is, perhaps AJ's legal issues don't warrant making the local news? Either that, or the fresas and the nacas don't follow the news and wear their telenovela beanie hats?

Whatever, I'm very curious to see what will happen in order to allow our protagonistas to end up together for their HEA.

Silvana

You're welcome for the recaps! I am happy that AJ is in jail so we can finally move on with this storyline. Not so happy about Stella still being stuck on Manuel though.

doris, I'm outside of Ft Myers and I have no Telemundo signal at all which is very frustrating, so I still have to wait until the next day and watch online. I'm only here for the month house-sitting, but I was really hoping to be able to watch Silvana since there are no Telemundo stations at home in Michigan. I can get Univision, UniMas, Mundomax and Estrella TV here but no Telemundo and I've tried scanning for channels numerous times on both TVs/antennas. I thought everywhere in Florida would have a signal!

J, that was an awesome recap. Thanks. The effect of Hurricane Matthew here on the east coast of Florida caused power outage se that made it imposible to watch tv, so your recap and comments from viewerville made up for my not being able to watch. Thanks to everyone for a Job well done.
Helen

SILVANA--
J--Thank you again for a great recap. So happy the AJ thing was over in one episode. I agree. They could have let it drag on and on, but we need a resolution so Chivis and Manuel can get back on track--especially with Stella on the prowl.

I don't see how Jorge asking Margarita not to spread the story about the brouhaha at the church will do any good. Did anyone count the number of 1st Communicants? Out of the dozen or so, at least one or two probably go to the same school who aren't under any restrictions.

AJ's crimes banished to the back pages of the local crime news? Who reads it, anyway? A word about Miami---my grandson's gf is a Miami girl and lives in a middle-class neighborhood. They suffer from the same kind of crimes we get in our "safe havens" in Mid-Atlantic DC, but I would stop before calling the whole city crime-ridden.

However, I think Trini and Chivis would have to read the business section to find reporting on the kind of white-collar crime AJ is accused of. The authorities are certainly keeping his crime under wraps, though. I don't think I'll be surprised at anything, except it really being a "mistake." AJ has discussed it with Rafael and says he just "borrowed" the clients money, intending to pay it back. And where have we heard that before? Ponzi schemers, that's where.

RetiredinFL--glad to hear you are ok. Hope your electricity comes back on soon.

SILVANA

I'm glad you guys in Florida are okay. Thanks fir the recaps, as always. I love the asides.

Thoughts in no particular order:

How could Dominique afford an expensive Yorkshire terrier when he apparently can't just go and buy his own food? He has to eat what Stella buys and keeps in the house??

Antonio Jode is a very unattractive man. Mañuel must have been thinking "WHAAAT?!" when he saw him.

In the age of texting, Facebook, Twitter etc, Jorge left it a leeeeeeetle late to suggest Margarita not tell anyone! The news was probably already spread around town while everyone was still in the chapel! It IS pretty juicy gossip. And it's not like it was a private family ceremony.

The actress who plays Lupita is very convincing at crying. I'm so envious of her hair. It's a veritable bushel.

AJ's disguise with the Halloween stuff was ridiculous. I think those FBI guys need to hand in their badges. And get eye exams ASAP. Beard of yarn, googly-eyed nerd glasses...really!? I'm surprised AJ wasn't stumbling into everything, wearing those glasses.

Silvana. Second it about the safety of all the Floridians. Hope everything is back to normal soon!

Sin Senos Si

Mary- interesting, I too see where the author says this is the second book of three.

did you see "sin senos NO hay paraiso", Telemundo almost killed it by by first deciding to no longer do english captions and then by extending it to 167 capitulos.

you might be interested in seeing the original, original, "Sin Tetas no hay paraiso" (23 episodes)
(from wiki- "The complete, uncut series was released on DVD in the United States under the title Sin Pechos No Hay Paraíso on October 13, 2009 by DistriMax Inc.; the five-disc set includes English subtitles.")

(and you probably know tetas (tits) was changed to senos (breasts) because of U.S. censorship).

I'm really loving this story and all of the characters are so cool!

Silvana

thanks so much J for the wonderful recap!

Jude Gray- I think Dom picked up the dog at the pound, hence all the problems.

I am a SIN SUENOS devotee, I brought the tv series online from amazon and the movie which was soft porno, any way the characters from the tv series ,Octavio was Abierto in the tv show, Jotas was the hitman brother, I like the continuation of 1st Catalina girlfriends who had to stay in the bar to earn a living. I miss my man ,Pelembre,he was a great figure as well, they really extended this series , but if you had no exposure to the first series , they still wrote around the missing elements. The surprise confession around the campfire on the part of her best friends was a mature statement. The parents haven't a clue?!The DEA GOT A SURPRISE AS WELL!! but my man TITI, HE really messed up!!! love this show!!!!
