General

Since my usual Monday recap of Silvana will not happen, I volunteer to do a recap of the first episode of La Doña on Tuesday. I am VERY skeptical about this production. I have enjoyed Aracely in a couple of novelas: La Patrona, Las Vías del Amor and Abrázame muy Fuerte. It's not that I can't imagine her as the protagonist; it's that I can't imagine it taking place in a city.

I adored Doña Bárbara with Edith González. Not sure if anyone now reading Caray remembers Jean's excellent recaps. By some amazing coincidence my profe for Advanced Spanish had chosen Doña Bárbara by Rómulo Gallegos as our next novel at the same time the telenovela was on. Being careful not to give anything away I posted descriptions of what was going on in the novel and how events differed in the TN. It was great fun.

So I gather from promos on Telemundo that this TN will take place in an urban environment, not on ranches in los llanos of Venezuela. I simply have a hard time imagining this. In the novel the atmosphere of this area was very important, with wonderful descriptions of life on the plains.

La Doña: Thanks novelera; looking forward to watching this one. I realize that it is based on a classic, but I have never had the opportunity either to read or to watch it. So I'm coming in as a complete newbie. I'm sure your expertise in this case will be a plus.

La Doña

Novelera, I'm delighted that you'll be recapping the first episode. Like LXV, I've neither read nor seen any previous version, but I've been thinking that perhaps this may be the novela I watch next. I won't be able to watch the first episode tomorrow because I'll be recapping Silvana, so I'm doubly happy that you'll be recapping it.

SIN SENOS last episode and grand fin:

My apologies for a very sketchy recap -- back and forth scene cut-ins, flashbacks and NO ENGLISH OR SPANISH SUBTITLES FOR THE FINAL 20 MINUTES got me confused!

Part 1:

Calvo and his recruits invade the coffee ranch and shoot everyone in sight, including saintly Belen who urged Cata to leave revenge to God. Cata flees into the fields with her money bag.

Worried Hernan leaves Albeiro and Hilda outside of the DEA office to check on Cata at the ranch. Albeiro and Hilda meet with DEA officials to inform them that Diabla isn’t buried in her grave. (To the amusement of Sin Senos Twitter fans, the “American” DEA agents all have awesome, awesome AUSSIE accents!) This news sends the DEA agents planning an airdrop on Diabla’s ranch.

Yesica and Daniela frantically pack money bags from another hiding place in Anibal’s estate. They load an SUV and head to the ranch for more money stashes.

Capitan calls on Anibal at Celia’s house. They agree to finish Diabla off at Anibal’s and pick up more help along the way from Gato, Titi, Daniel and Jota. They invade Anibal’s estate too late.

Hernan arrives at the coffee ranch in time to catch Calvo’s gang surrounding Cata in a hut they set fire to. Hernan rescues Cata but is wounded as they flee towards a waterfall gorge. Cata manages to warn her mother by phone, then loses her phone at the edge of the gorge. She and Hernan jump into the water below to escape Calvo. Cata pulls Hernan towards some edge rocks and prays that he hasn’t died. She sees a heavenly figure in the sky and Hernan soon spits out some water.

Hilda and Albeiro rush back to the coffee ranch and are horrified by Belen’s body. Albeiro shoots one of Calvo’s men, but Calvo soon has them surrounded. Albeiro and Hilda make peace with death, but Calvo and gang are all gunned down instead by the calvary of Titi, Gato, Daniel and Jota. They soon find Cata and Hernan at the bottom of the waterfall, and in telenovela Chippendale’s ripped fashion, all but Gato take off their shirts to jump to the rescue. I don’t know if my eyes played tricks on me, or if Telemundo was spoofing the audience with Naked Gun sight gags, but when the hunks jumped off the “high cliff of several stories,” suddenly the water was only 10 feet below. They rush Hernan to the hospital and don’t bother putting their shirts back on until then. And bless mom Hilda -- in all the deadly chaos, Hilda was even carrying a fresh, more modest blouse for Cata to change into!

I will try to post the rest Tuesday evening.

Sin Senos

wow, thanks so much Mary!

and what a tremendous final that was, I was ready for more, but then the ending wasn't FIN, it was "To Be Continued".

Marcial rolls out of the hospital with new purpose, the legal outcomes for the family, it was scathing how they rip into politicians!!! The group heads to the house as well!

yes that was devil woman in the SUV THAT PASSED!!

Sin Senos: WOW! I never saw that twist coming in regards to the original Catalina back from the dead.

How did she pull it off ?

SIN SENOS grand fin:

Part 2:

At the hospital, after all are assured that Hernan will be OK, Cata makes two side visits before rejoining him. She checks in with a plastic surgeon about getting the implants removed and visits Marcial to discuss Daniela. Cata spends the rest of the hour making rapturous plans with Hernan in his hospital bed.

While being released, re-energized Marcial invites everyone to join him in taking over Diabla’s abandoned properties. Astonished Hilda, Albeiro, and Jota accompany Chucky as he wheels Marcial around Diabla’s modern palace. Marcial then insists they check out the ranch.

Meanwhile, Capitan, Anibal and several police are already racing to the ranch while the DEA mobilizes an airdrop crew. Diabla and Daniela scurry into the stables so Diabla can pull up some planks hiding another money stash. Daniela pleads with her that they have enough money. As they scurry back to their SUV, money blows out their arms. They drive off into groves and fields, and get shot at by the police. They abandon the SUV and run through the groves. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t catch whether Diabla was expecting a small plane or helicopter to rescue her. They run smack into the airdropped DEA agents. At this point, my Telemundo stopped running the English and Spanish subtitles!! What totally rotten timing!!

One of the DEA agents pulls off her gloves, helmet and face mask and reveals herself to shocked Diabla as Cata La Grand with a twenty years-deserved face punch. I don’t know what words were hurled without the subtitles, and after a commercial break, still no captions!! By then, Diabla’s face was a bloody mess from more blows by Cata La Grand. Then the DEA agents shove Diabla and Daniela into their cars and leave only dust as Capitan, Anibal, Gato, Titi, and Marcial, etc. close in. They stare in shock at the empty dusty road and I assumed they assumed that Diabla and Daniela escaped yet again.

“Continuación” appears over the final shot.

Silvana

I'll have the recap posted sometime tomorrow morning.

Sin Senos

thanks so much Mary!

(oh and I feel your pain, hope you sent off a note to the big T- Captioning@telemundo.com)

ok here is what happened when you lost captions,

earlier Cata is talking to Hernan in his hospital bed and says there are 4 things she wants to do, spend the rest of her life with him, pay off the mortgage of his mothers house, get the implants removed, (where Hernan says he doesn't mind how they look but it just isn't her) and Cata wants to make something of herself, go to school, be a lawyer.

DEA Cata la grande (Carmen Villalobos) reveals herself, and places Yesica under arrest of the U.S. government, and reads her he rights, Yesica sneers that they are in Colombia.

then Cata asks Hernan what his dreams are, the singing, songwriting, etc. but he says he buried his dreams with his mother, Cata assures him, he will be happy again, god has given them a second chance.

Ximena, Vale and Vanessa come into the room, Vanessa asks about Jota (who's with Alberio) and Cata says they just called and are just about to capture Yesica.

Catalina la grande slugs Yesica, once for her mother, once for Alberio, and once for her sister, and when Yesica spits blood on her, she knees her, and Daniela's protest gets a slap down, as the local DEA guys show up, (and an interesting white dog walks right through the center of the scene confusing everyone), Yesica is carted off to the car as is Daniela as the tall DEA boss grabs her around the waist like a 6 year old kid. They load up and pull out.

and here come the posse, Titi, Gato, Daniel, and their guys, Capitan, Anibal, and the cops, and following up is Marcial, with Chuky, Alberio, Hilda, and Jota in the car only to see a trail of dust down the road, finally Marcial says it "she got away"...

(earlier when the guys lost Yesica down by the river and returned to their cars Alberio told them there is only one other way out of the lemon grove, which is where they all raced to, but alas, too late)

(also if it helps with Cata la grande being in the DEA, in the earlier sin senos NO hay paraiso, Yesica and Cata worked with the DEA to help catch the narcos)

LA DOÑA – Primer Episodio – Parte 1 de 4

Protagonists:

Altagracia Sandoval = Bárbara Guaimarán (in the novel)
Saúl Aguirre = Santos Luzardo (in the novel)

The first thing we see is the “not for minors” warning that there might be sex and violence.

So it appears we’re in La Ciudad de México looking out over the huge metropolis. We hear the voice of Altagracia Sandoval giving a soliloquy. She tells Viewerville that she’s like this city: powerful, crude, and agitated. She says the city is full of concrete walls behind which many women cry for help, trapped by violence. But no one wants to hear them. They are victims of males who think themselves superior. They abuse them even if they’re girls. She says she knows because she was one of them.

We see flashbacks of several guys getting ready to rape a girl. We see another girl run off. We see some tattoos on the guys, who are wearing masks.

Altagracia’s attorney, Braulio, approaches her. She’s standing high up on a partially constructed building wearing a very sexy black outfit. She reams him out for not having gotten rid of the poor neighborhood below. This is where she wants to build a parking garage for this huge project.

Way below we then meet Jaime and Azucena and some other humble folks. They look like they’re doing some sort of art project.

AG [Sorry, this recap is long and I simply can’t type Altagracia over and over!] goes into the building giving orders about the construction. She fires some poor guy on his first day at work for admiring her. She fires another guy for being a bootlicker after he reproached the guy who was being fired.

We are then transported to one of those odd Mexican trials where the accused is behind chicken wire or something. We are about to meet Saúl Aguirre [played by David Chocarro]. He’s passionately defending a woman named Margarita who is accused of attempted homicide. Saúl is berating a witness who supposedly saw her with a gun. What really happened is that some rich guy kidnapped and raped her. When she went to the police, they wouldn’t take her case. Saúl rips this witness to shreds.

Jaime and the rest of the poor folks go to the construction site to see AG. He says he owns the property, and that there are 300-year-old trees. He mentions the people who came with him and calls them inquilinos. [My dictionary calls them tenants, but probably more specifically rent-controlled tenants who couldn’t afford to live elsewhere.]

Jaime tells AG he has a son who is his pride and joy who grew up right here. Jaime broke his back trying to protect this neighborhood. Braulio tells him the perito (expert) said the place was in bad shape. Jaime tells them that the place withstood the quake of ’85. He says that “they” created a false report.

LA DOÑA – Primer Episodio – Parte 2 de 4

La Doña tells Jaime that what he wants is money. He’s trying to extort her, she says. AG then orders her pet judge to issue a warrant for Jaime’s arrest for attempted extortion. And she orders some minion of the press to show up and film the arrest.

Jaime tells Azucena that he doesn’t want to bother his son with this. He’s too busy trying to help abused women, murdered women. The two of them gaze at a photo of Clara, whom they call their “angel”. He says that the murderer was caught, but he’s never forgiven himself for not protecting her.

At court the head of the local police department shows up. Margarita yells through the screen that he wouldn’t even write down her accusation. The cop says he doesn’t remember arresting her. Margarita yells that he helped beat her. Saúl says it’s obvious that the rich rapist pulled strings to get HER arrested instead of he himself. Saúl gets her released immediately!

We see AG’s palatial home. Apparently she does care about someone: her sister Regina and her niece Isabela. Regina is cooking for the birthday party. AG tells her people are coming to do that. Then we see another flashback. It appears that AG let her sister get away and she was the only one raped.

We then meet AG’s husband, Felipe Valenzuela, un diputado [a congressman]. He has brought her a present, a beautiful bracelet, even though it’s HIS birthday. He wants to get away to Oaxaca for a few days, but she says she’s too busy. He wonders why she’s so distant and why they never make love any more.

Saúl is in Veracruz with his girlfriend. I never did catch her name. We see him pull her into the bedroom after some hot kisses.

We see the cops arrive and drag Jaime out, actually at one point dragging him into mud. We see AG with an evil grin watching this arrest on her tablet as it appears on TV. Felipe interrupts her. She tells him he’s 45 and only still a congressman. He should be President by now! She does have rather brutal sex with him [on top, of course], while we cut away to tender scenes with Saúl and his girlfriend.

Resting after sex Saúl gets a call from his mother telling him about his father’s arrest.

Felipe, who actually seems like a pretty nice guy, is eating something delicious prepared by Regina. He tells her that he’s worried. They’ve been married 5 years. But he doesn’t understand her. She’s so distant. He knows she loves power. And he doesn’t know if she married him because she loves him or because he’s a politician.

AG goes through a secret door at the back of her closet. She goes down some stone stairs to a cellar. There’s hundreds of candles lit down there. She talks to herself, expressing contempt for her husband. She takes off a filmy wrap and appears to only be in a pair of black lace undies. She says something about giving her sacred body. [There were scenes in Doña Bárbara where she looked into a mirror and tried to conjure something she wanted.]

LA DOÑA – Primer Episodio – Parte 3 de 4

AG talks about the day they killed her innocence. We see the masked criminals again. This time we see a young man trying to defend her. They shoot him in the head. AG says that the marks on their skin will help her find them, one by one. “They will pay for the deaths of my parents, for César, and for all the damage they did to me. They abused me, but they turned me into iron.” She asks whoever she’s invoking to bring them to her.

Over the phone Saúl tells his mother they have no idea who they’re messing with.

So now we’re getting ready for Felipe’s fancy birthday party. AG has 3 or 4 servants in the room helping her get ready.

Saúl has come to see his father in jail. He tells Jaime that he is the real owner of the property. He’s sure they came up with a false deed. The saintly Jaime only worries about the inquilinos.

At the big bash Felipe and AG are announced by some woman with a hand mike as if they were royalty.

Saúl is in his car busy googling AG and finding out about the party. He also finds out that the judge who issued the warrant for his father’s address, Valeria Puertas, is married to Braulio Padilla, AG’s lawyer. He says Es cuestión de escarbar tantito para enseguida aparezca el estiércol, como siempre. (You only have to dig a little bit to find the manure, like always.)

At the party Valeria tells AG that she did what was asked; the viejo is in jail. AG doesn’t like her saying it out loud. She says something about having put her in that position but she’s still like a cheap hairdresser.

We meet Braulio and Valeria’s son Diego. Apparently AG has decided he’s the one for her niece. The poor boy says that Isabela only sees him as a friend.

And then AG tells Isabela that Diego is the one for her. He’s well off. He won’t hurt her. And, if he’s a bit weak, all the better. She tells her that men are to be used. Regina approaches. She doesn’t like the way AG talks to her daughter about men. She says she’s eternally grateful for what AG did, saving her from the rapists, but she doesn’t want Isabela to grow up bitter. She says to AG: “Don’t try to fill the void left by your real daughter with my child!” Slap!

AG tells Regina never to mention her. She says she’s not her daughter. She doesn’t care what she’s been doing these 20 years.

And…then we are in the State of Tamaulipas. We see a charming girl singing and playing guitar with some other street musicians. Friends approach, calling her Mónica, and saying that her father is mal. She comes home to find him passed out.

LA DOÑA – Primer Episodio – Parte 4 de 4

Back at the party, AG tells Regina she never wants her to mention that girl. Regina: “You didn’t even look at her after she was born.” AG: “At least I let her be born.”

Mónica’s father apparently can’t walk. He didn’t eat the food she left for him. He says he wants to die. She says something about needing the food because of the “sugar”. I assume he has diabetes. Mónica insists on taking him to D.F. to visit a doctor she found on the internet. He says he doesn’t want to return there because of… Mónica: “the woman who gave birth to me.”

Saúl shows up at the birthday party. He bribes some waiter to give him a jacket and white shirt. He chats up Valeria, the judge. [She’s angry at her husband because he let AG insult her. She also tells him she knows he’s in love with AG.] Valeria gets him past some guards and into the party without an invitation.

AG tells Regina that that child is the daughter of one of those rapists that killed César and their parents. “How could I love her?” Regina tells her that Felipe is worried about her. She laughs and says that he’s un pelele (a puppet, a patsy). AG tells Regina that sex is a way to humiliate them and to get what you want. She says there’s no man who can conquer her.

Azucena, Saúl’s mother, and his girlfriend say they are going to that party to look for Saúl.

At the party Saúl confronts La Doña, telling her he’s the son of Jaime Aguirre, the guy that she and her corrupt henchmen put in jail while knowing he was innocent. She glares up at him saying that the man hasn’t been born… He finishes her sentence… that can put you in your place [using the familiar twice, even after she corrected him]. He tells her she may not yet know such a man, but the night is young.

SIN SENOS

Thanks, Deb, for clarifying the last scenes! I've been waiting 8 years for Cata La Grande to tell Yesica where to go! It was very aggravating for the captioning to suddenly disappear at that very moment! The English vanished off one TV and the Spanish disappeared off another TV, so I know I didn't accidentally change the settings on BOTH TVs.

Hope we don't have to wait long for Part III -- I'm sure we'll learn how Cata survived her suicide and what she did the last 20 years. I'm not too surprised that she joined the DEA, and Twitter fans who must have seen previews on talk shows mentioned a face-off between Cata and Yesica. Some fans hoped she'd show up as Marcial's nurse.

In my world of alternative endings and sequels, Hilda should have continued her fashion business from Part I to rival or surpass Yesica's mobster wealth. If Cata hadn't committed suicide, she could have worked for her mother as a traveling spokesmodel/sales rep, thereby staying away most of the year from the pain of Albeiro's relationship with her mother and their daughter. As the company spokesmodel, Cata could have turned herself into a Kardasian, thereby earning honest fame, money and celebrity boyfriends to the chagrin of Yesica and Marcial. (The real Cata reportedly turned Yesica and Marcial over to the DEA and moved in with another loathed narco.) Anyway, Hilda could have hired Pelambre as a security manager -- like the Designing Women hiring of Anthony.

This Part II had some plot contradictions -- Yesica told Daniela that she was pregnant with her in prison, yet I don't remember authorities jailing her when she turned Marcial in. And whom did Yesica cheat with since Daniela isn't his daughter? Or were DNA results tampered with to prevent Marcial from protecting Daniela?

It would be great fun if the original Yesica shows up in Part III as the new Yesica's older sister.

--Mary

lA DOÑA

wow novelera, not only is this a wonderful recap, but a "LA DOÑA" 101, the introduction, so rare for anyone to be able to this so well, thank you.

Sin Senos

thank you so much HALIMACANDY,
love your colorful recaps!

Sin Senos

ah Mary, you should be a writer!

yes I agree, Hilda was a world class lingerie designer and got the girls off the street modeling, what?

I'm thinking the next part will be a continuation of this, not really a part 3 in the trilogy, but...

Deb: Cata La Grande didn't age one bit.

She looks sexier more than ever! I did enjoy watching her cold-cocking Yesica.

On La Dona: Now we see why AG is the way she is: those monsters violently gang-raped her, taking her innocence.

I'm looking forward to watching tonight's 2nd episode!

SILVANA SIN LANA (Capítulo 89) - MARTES - Parte 1 de 3

After leaving many messages, Lucha finally reaches Andrés. Miserable and very drunk, he tells her he doesn't want to speak to anyone. He then hangs up. Lucha asks Jorge to call on his phone, since Andrés won't recognize the number. Jorge reaches Andrés and has a very brief conversation before Andrés hangs up. Jorge does manage to learn that he is at the Hotel Madison. Lucha borrows Manuel's car to go be with Andrés.

As Lucha goes out the door, in comes Alejandra. She greets Vicente with "Hola guapo." Manuel decides to go upstairs and get ready for bed. Jorge too goes upstairs, leaving Vicente and Ale alone. She tells him that she tried to call him yesterday, but he didn't answer the phone, nor did he respond to a text message. After making some excuses, Vicente finally tells her that he's in love with another woman. She responds, "OK, but when things don't work out with your neighbor, don't call me. I don't play second fiddle to anyone" (no soy plato de segunda mesa de nadie).

Trini is at Don Benito's bakery, seeking comfort after Majo didn't go through with the wedding. She observes to Don Benito that life never stops slapping us in the face (la vida no para de darnos cachetadas). When Don Benito offers her some coffee, she complains that she doesn't want coffee, she'd like some whiskey, and she'd like him to join her in having some. Alas, Don Benito tells her, he has run out of whiskey, but he can offer her a cold beer. She accepts, and when he hands it to her, she downs the entire bottle without stopping, and soon asks for another one. She tells Don Benito with much disdain that Majo is in love with Vicente--the son of the fish seller! Don Benito tells Trini that she needs some distraction, some relaxation. He proposes that they go somewhere to dance the tango: "I love to dance, and with a woman like you, it would be a privilege. Do you accept?" With her customary lack of graciousness, Trini says she'll think about it.

Angie and Majo are in their bedroom, talking about Majo's situation. Angie asks whether their father knows about Vicente. "No," says Majo emphatically, "all he knows is that I didn't want to marry Andrés because I'm not in love with him." She admits that she doesn't know what she wants to do now. Angie recommends that she tell AJ the truth. She believes that fathers end up understanding their children's decisions, even if they're not in favor of them at the start. She cites AJ's change of heart concerning her relationship with Jorge as support for what she has said. [I wouldn't count on that.]

Trini phones Don Benito, presumably to let him know what she has decided about his proposal that they go dancing. But rather than simply say "I accept," she relates all the thoughts she had, both pro and con, going on for several minutes before finally saying that she accepts his invitation.

Having agreed to go dancing, Trini now decides what she wants to wear. She selects an expensive dress from her closet and then rings the bell for Sara. When Sara doesn't come, Trini steps outside her room and rings again. She then goes back inside the room, displeased that Sara hasn't come. The door opens and Sara, seeming to be out of breath from rushing up the stairs, asks what Trini would like. Apparently what Trini would like is to berate and humiliate her. She tells Sara that an employee should knock before entering, and demands that Sara leave and try again. Sara complies. She leaves, closes the door, and knocks. "Who is it?" asks Trini

SILVANA SIN LANA - MARTES - Parte 2 de 3

After Sara has identified herself and re-entered the room, Trini asks her to iron the dress she has selected. Sara replies that she can't do it right away, since she has lots of other things to do. Trini informs her that she needs the dress NOW, that she has an appointment. Sara asks with whom, prompting Trini of course to ask "Since when do employees ask their employers such questions? Don't be nosy" (No seas metiche). However, she continues by saying that she likes to share information about what she does, so...she has una cita with Don Benito. She has a contented smirk, while Sara is NOT pleased.

Angie is sitting on the couch with Jorge. Jorge says he was surprised by AJ's going to bat for Majo. Angie agrees that she too was very surprised. Her father is super valiente, ¿no? (very brave). Jorge tells her how ecstatic Vicente is. Angie replies that she hopes Majo doesn't screw things up again (Ojalá que mi hermanita no la vaya a regar otra vez). "Majo is so hormonal--she doesn't think about things before doing them, and then she's sorry. Poor Andrés." This leads first Jorge and then Angie to ask the other to please let them know if they fall for someone else, don't lie. Each assures the other that they would, but they assure each other that such a thing would never happen.

Trini tells the obviously unhappy Sara that she is going to take a bath with her salts. When she can't find the bath salts, she asks Sara whether she has seen them. Sara informs her that she used them when cooking. Dumbfounded, Trini says she'll take a shower instead. Sara prepares to leave the room, but then adds "one little thing": "if you find you don't have sufficient hot water up here, it's because I have many pots and pans to wash, and I wash them in hot water. And when that happens, not much hot water comes up here to the second floor." Trini, of course, orders her to wash the cookware in cold water.

The scene shifts to the bakery. Sara comes in and eventually berates Don Benito for his relationship with Trini. She then leaves in a huff. Juanito, behind the counter, asks Don Benito admiringly, "How do you get women fighting over you, at your age? You're the Brad Pitt of the barrio." A very pleased Don Benito tells Juanito that he doesn't do anything: "Es mi sex appeal." He then sees he has a missed call on his phone, and he hears Trini's message telling him [eventually] that she accepts his invitation. He's very happy, but he tells Juanito to say nothing about this to Margarita. Who then appears.

At Stella's, Dom is reluctantly reading "Mi Bebé to learn how to be a good father for Javito. Poncho comes in and tells Stella he'd like to rent the house for one night, so he and Génesis can have some privacy. Stella starts hitting him. How dare he make such a proposal. He tells her that all he wants is a setting for a romantic dinner. She doesn't believe him: "You're talking to the queen of seduction. After dinner comes the dessert." He ups the ante by promising to make the bed for a month and clean Javito's cage and feed him. She finally agrees to his proposal, adding some conditions of her own. She and Dom go upstairs, and Poncho excitedly calls Génesis

SILVANA SIN LANA - MARTES - Parte 3 de 3

Sara returns to work and angrily opens the ironing board. She parades around the room holding the dress in front of her and echoing Trini's Voy a bailar con Benito. Then, suddenly, her face tells us "I have an idea." She looks at the ironing board and the iron. [I can't imagine how it could have taken her this long. As soon as Trini asked her to iron the dress, probably most of Viewerville knew what would happen.] She sets the iron on a high setting and asks herself where to put it. She uses a Spanish children's rhyme used for selecting who is "it" (like "eeney, meeny, miney, moe"): Tin marín de dos pingué, Cúcara, mácara, títere fué. She selects the spot, puts the hot iron down on it, and sits down contentedly to wait.

Majo texts Vicente, interrupting his studies. Indeed, he tells her he can't concentrate, he wants to be with her all day. They switch to a phone call, and Majo tells him they have to be very careful, since her father doesn't know yet. This, of course, is AJ's signal to come in. He asks Majo who she's been talking to, and why is she so nervous. Majo tells her father one lie after another. He asks her to stay away from her friends for a while--he doesn't want everyone talking about her and what happened. He then picks her up and presumably carries her downstairs for dinner [though we don't actually see him managing on the stairs].

Génesis arrives for dinner. She doesn't let him take her large pocketbook. She tells him she has brought him a present. It's a DVD called Life and Grace. She tells him she wants them to watch it now. She sits on the couch and uses the pocketbook as a barrier between them. He tries to kiss her, and she pulls away, explaining "Before el Supremo, no!"

Chivis' family is at the table for dinner. AJ offers a rather long grace. Lupita expresses her happiness at praying and says they have to go to church so they can receive Communion. Majo and Lupita go on about how wonderful it is that AJ is with them. A visibly impatient Trini says she has an appointment with an amiga. Angie, sitting next to her, smells perfume and sees Trini with makeup; she asks Trini whether her appointment is with an amigo. Lupita puts it all together and asks whether Trini is going out with Don Benito. Trini replies, "This girl seems to be 23 years old or is a 52-year-old dwarf" (Esta niña parece que tiene 23 años o es una enana de 52).

Poncho is bored watching the DVD. He tells Génesis that he had something else planned. He makes moves toward her. She keeps asking "Are you sure no one will come?" She then suggests that she'd prefer that they go to his room. He's thrilled. [The Hallelujah Chorus is heard in the background.]

Lucha arrives at the hotel bar and finds a very drunk Andrés. He claims to be just a little drunk (un poquito borracho). Lucha asks him how long he's been here. He answers in terms of drinks: 4 whiskeys, one vodka, one gin, and many tequilas. He orders another, but Lucha tells the bartender not to give him any more, just water. Andrés then asks, "Why is it that the people we most care for are the same people who do us the most harm?" (¿Por qué la gente que más queremos es la misma gente que más daño te hace?). Drowning in his own unhappiness, he doesn't see the look of recognition on Lucha's face. "I too would like to know that," she replies. She then tells him that it's a good thing that Majo didn't marry him, because she doesn't love him, and he deserves better. He turns to her and asks her to tell him one thing: "María José left me because she's in love with Vicente, yes?" End of episode.

LA DOÑA: WOW, novelera! You knocked that out of the park. I had been congratulating myself on having understood the gist of the many subplots they introduced in this first episode, but you multiplied it all by several magnitudes. I am dismayed by the violence, the ugly sex and the persecution of the lower classes, but I'll just have to accept it. Gotta run, but I just wanted to get my appreciation in.

La Doña

Wow! What a spectacular recap and introduction to the novela. Novelera, you've outdone yourself (and that takes some doing!).

I haven't yet had a chance to see the episode, but your recap definitely makes me eager to do so. I won't say more right now, except that I think La Doña sounds very promising. ¡Muchísimas gracias!

Silvana. Excellent recap as usual, Juanita! Did I call it or didn't I? Lucha does show up to rescue Andrés. I have a feeling that this may turn into a life-long pattern, as Andrés seems fairly weak and easily dominated and Lucha is strong and sensible. In other words, they're made for each other! Jorge and Angie are so sweet! Almost as much as Manuel and Chivis. I thought the ironing scene was really stupid. In the first place, the dress didn't need ironing, and in the second place, no matter what Trini had said or done, it was just mean.

SILVANA:

Thanks, Juanita! I hit ffwrd a lot this episode because of all the Trini scenes. Does anyone else get a creepy feeling from the way Poncho keeps trying to pressure Genesis into having sex?

LA DONA:

Novelera- Fantastic job on the first episode, which seems very promising. Much like with the original Dona Barbara, my chief problem with the way La Dona reacts to her hatred of men for how they treat women, is that she treats women, especially the poor and unprotected, the same way as those men. She may not rape them, but she has no problem stepping all over them and taking advantage of them to get her way. She's no better than the men she claims to hate.

Silvana

Thanks very much, SpanProf and Vivi. Yes, SpanProf, you called it! As for Trini, yes, I too thought the dress didn't need ironing, and I agree that Sara went too far, but frankly if I had received the kind of mean bullying that Trini dishes out every day, I might have done something similar (though more likely I would have told Trini off and then quit).

And yes, Vivi, I too have felt that Poncho's behavior with Génesis is coercive and creepy. He was never one of my favorite characters, but I used to regard him as a poor, goodhearted schnook. No longer.

Silvana. I'm wondering if somehow nothing will happen between Poncho and Génesis--if either Dom and Stella return early and interrupt, or her father bursts in on them, or she turns him down somehow, possibly with some sort of physical injury. :) The Supremo may arrange it.

SILVANA

novelera - Thank you for the recap!

I wonder if 'tequila makes Andres' clothes fall off'? (my apologies to Joe Nichols....heard that one on the radio today)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj2700em-JQ

Trini = FFWD>>> From the get-go, I figured Sara would leave a burn mark on Trini's dress for spite. That Trini is a real piece of work. In the meantime, she chugged that beer at Don B's like a pro, after two whiskey's at home. We haven't seen her eat any lunch? (keep her away from tequila. just sayin'...)

"This leads first Jorge and then Angie to ask the other to please let them know if they fall for someone else, don't lie."
A telenovela harbinger of trouble to come? There are how many episodes to go? :-p

Vivi - Poncho has been creeping me out ever since he met Genesis. Those ripped jeans are a bit much, too.

Goodbye sin suenos#90
THIA IS SOME MESS!
THANKS LADIES, ALL of your write ups were excellent!! I really enjoyed the encapsulations!!
Last not least, I quess .?

Sorry. how does fit/match the soap opera, or the dog-gone soft porn movie!! Or even this show?? So the young boys who killed her didn’t? the hitman was FEDS… the nightmare was real!!

Coke and tequila is a great psychic enhancer. Was there laughter from the FEDS or was that chicken cackling?

Love all around from the extended family,

Black ops car and another blow for payback, [yes the white dog was creepy] but I saw houses in the background?? Cata got in black car and drove past mailboxes?!?

Eat my dust! I am burnt out, so how will Daniela and Gatos fair on the nacro series??

LA DOÑA

There were certainly were a LOT of differences between this show and Doña Bárbara, the telenovela that was one of my all-time favorites.

Of course, it takes place in cities rather than on ranches. Last night Altagracia mentioned to her sister Regina that the attackers killed their parents.

In DB, both the novel and the telenovela, DB as a young girl was living with her father on a boat. Her mother was an Indian, and I don’t recall what happened to her. Her father was not exactly a prince of a guy. He had all these deck hands who were drooling over DB as she grew into a young woman. These guys killed her father and raped her. Their faces were NOT covered. Also, in his first telenovela role, Jencarlos Canela played the young DB’s boyfriend who is killed by the villains who raped her.

DB got away and went to the Barquero ranch, seduced Lorenzo Barquero and got pregnant with Marisela. She turned Lorenzo into a drunk, and turned him and Marisela out of the ranch. She renamed the ranch El Miedo.

So there’s another big difference. DB was raped but did not become pregnant. Altagracia says that she was impregnated by the rape. But she may be lying. And we don’t know how Mónica came to live with her diabetic father, nor what kind of relationship AG had with the guy who Mónica calls papa.

And in DB Santos Luzardo came from money. After a tragic event, he and his mother left Altamira, the family ranch, and moved to the city. Santos came back to sell the property and ends up falling in love with his childhood home. Then begins a war with DB over boundaries of the two ranches. Saúl grew up in a poor family.

And, DB saw Santos Luzardo as he came up river in a boat arriving back to his childhood home. She was on a cliff on horseback. She immediately developed a mad obsession with him. Didn’t look like AG was that smitten, but I’m sure it will come to that.

Also, the daughter, Marisela, played DB as the young girl who gets raped. I can’t tell if they’re doing the same thing. The flashbacks aren’t clear enough for me to tell if the Mónica actress is playing Altagracia as a young girl.

Is their personal laundry service in the jails?

When Saul went to visit Jaime in prison the next day, his father was still wearing his khaki shirt, but instead of being smeared with mud, it was sparkling clean and pressed.

Gobluefan: I noticed that LOL!

It's probably going to be dirty again later tonight!

Novelera: AG is one evil twisted psycho! Karma will come back to bite her!

Silvana sin Lana - Wednesday, November 30 - Capítulo 90, Part 1/2

Lucha doesn’t reply directly to Andrés about whether Majo is in love with Vicente. She does eventually remind him that there was something going on between them and they did sleep together, so… She comforts Andrés until he falls asleep on her shoulder. She says she adores him and will always be there for him.

There are a few ridiculous scenes of Trini whining about her ruined dress and Sara. Chivis and AJ basically just laugh at her, with Chives also telling her to treat Sara better. After both Sara and Trini leave, Angie mentions Trini’s jealousy because of Don Benito and Lupita remarks that everyone is going to end up with someone from the neighborhood, which makes both Chivis and AJ uncomfortable. Later, Lupita gets it on the teasing Trini about Don Benito by offering her one of her own dresses to wear.

Apparently Genesis was thinking of sleeping of Poncho. I honestly thought the earlier scenes were going to be a fakeout, which makes Poncho even creepier to me now. Anyway, she is really uncomfortable in his bedroom and makes him change the song three times. She finally says she’s ready but Poncho - his little Poncho, actually - is not.

Dom and Stella hear snoring in Poncho’s room so they waltz right in. Genesis and Poncho are sleeping on the bed (fully clothed). Genesis wakes up. Stella wants to know why they are in the bedroom, and what else they did besides watch a movie. Genesis says nothing, they just fell asleep holding hands. Stella offers to take Genesis home.

Lucha throws water in Andrés’ face to wake him up. She pays the bill and helps him get outside and into the truck. He falls asleep again and she tells him to forget Majo and to fall in love with her. She texts Manuel asking if she can return the truck in the morning since she doesn’t want to leave Andrés alone. Manuel agrees, but also reminds her that Andrés was about to get married and he doesn’t want her to get hurt.

Stella wonders what Genesis’ father would think if he knew about her being in Poncho’s room. Genesis once again says nothing happened. Stella continues guilt tripping her, even saying that what happens in her house is her responsibility. There are also rules that they can only have so many visitors per month, so if she wants to see Poncho again before the next month, it will have to be elsewhere. And because Stella likes Genesis so much, she’s going to tell her one more little thing: Poncho is married with three kids.

Silvana sin Lana - Wednesday, November 30 - Capítulo 90, Part 2/2

Angie asks Jorge how many times he’s fallen in love before. He starts counting, saying a bunch of names, but of course he’s joking. They kiss just as Manuel walks downstairs and interrupts them. He jumps over the back of the couch to sit between them. Jorge asks about Lucha. Manuel tells them that she’s taking care of Andrés. Jorge hopes Andrés doesn’t find out about Majo coming to the house for Vicente. Angie tells him not to repeat that to anyone else. She’s worried about her dad finding out. Manuel wonders why AJ would get so mad about Majo being with Vicente. Angie explains that it’s complicated since Majo has only told him so far that she isn’t in love with Andrés, not that she fell in love with Vicente while still being with Andrés.

Jorge walks Angie home. AJ is downstairs and jokes about them always being together. Angie asks where everyone else is. Trini went out with Don Benito. Lupita is upstairs. Majo is sleeping. And Chivis went to Andrés’ house to talk to his parents since nobody has heard from him. Jorge decides it’s a good idea to speak up and tell him about Lucha taking care of Andrés all night. The look on Angie’s annoyed face is kind of hilarious. AJ wonders why Jorge’s sister is taking care of his daughter’s ex-boyfriend. Did he miss something?

It takes a while for Angie and Jorge to convince AJ that Lucha and Andrés are just friends. He doesn’t understand why Lucha didn’t go to the wedding, unless there was a conflict of some sort. Jorge just says she doesn’t like weddings and she’s a bit anti-social. Angie mentions they shouldn’t let Majo know that Andrés got drunk so she won’t feel even more guilty. AJ finally says he’s going to the kitchen but he hides behind the fridge instead so he can eavesdrop. Angie is slightly annoyed at Jorge for telling her dad since he doesn’t know everything that’s been going on.

Don Benito takes Trini to a tango bar. He invites her to dance, which she happily accepts. Don Benito starts talking about love and Trini wants to stop since she’s thirsty. Don Benito asks for more wine. Trini starts talking about dancing “cheek to cheek” when she was younger, and Don Benito wants her to show him how. They start dancing again, Don Benito looks like he’s going to kiss Trini, and Sara shows up to interrupt them.

Thank you J--Jennie? Thank you for the recap. It seems to be a constant wash, rinse, repeat, but you dealt with it nicely.

If everyone is going to end up with someone from the barrio, I wonder if it's going to be Sara that ends up with AJ? (Broma). I just can't see Silvana going on like this for what, another couple of months? Univision should have cut this into 3 separate telenovelas and put Trini/Don Benito et al in the middle of the afternoon, The Three Stooges on Saturday mornings and given us a shorter, tighter Chivis/Manuel and Yours, Mine and Ours in a Long Long Trailer if they decide to go see the Grand Canyon.

Silvana. Excellent recap, Jennie! And welcome aboard (unless you're a previous recapper under a new name? --You seem really good at this). I loved your "little Poncho." So Poncho can't perform. Maybe the Supremo did intervene. :) I don't remember Poncho's actually marrying that woman with 3 kids, though he was going to when she told him she was pregnant with his child. When she "miscarried" she ended up going back to her ex, who, I believe, had gotten out of prison. If that was the case, then Stella was just flat-out lying to break up Poncho and Génesis. And regarding the last episode, something that has been bothering me--Cooking with bath salts? Really? Don't they come with perfumes and other chemicals? Would anyone really cook with them?

SILVANA

J- Is that you? Great recap, with very little to work with.

Last night, as I ffwded through every Trini scene, I started to realize that Trini has more lines and more scenes than EVERY other character, even our protagonists, who we hardly ever see anymore. Why? Does this actress has a lot of pull?

SpanProf- Stella was flat out lying. I'm glad Poncho's pecker didn't cooperate. But Stell and Dom joined in the creepiness when they busted into the bedroom and kept interrogating Genesis about whether she and Poncho had sex. Ya, basta! I'm so over this storyline.

SILVANA

You know, I think the writers are trying to paint Genesis and her dad as creepy and odd because they are part of this cult, but the ones who come off being the most creepy and odd are Poncho, Stella and Dom. Genesis should run away, as fast as she can, from these weirdos.

Silvana

I didn't realize I was logged into my other gmail account, oops! Yes, J is short for Jennie. :)

I agree, way too much Trini lately! And I was pretty annoyed with Stella and Dom too. This whole Genesis storyline is creepy to me. I pretty much started watching this for Manuel/Chivis and stayed for Majo/Vicente. I hope we get back to cute and happy scenes soon.

SILVANA

J - thank you for the recap!

Phew! Dodged one bullet. So Little Poncho (love that name!) got no "dessert". Ya basta! with this storyline.

SpanProf - the cooking with bath salts bothered me, too, for the same reason. Even if it was Epsom salts, nobody consumes them!

Silvana

Is Estefany Oliveira ("Genesis") wearing some sort of bust enhancer? Her pictures in Google Images show her with a normal, non-exaggerated figure.

SILVANA:

GoBlueFan- Likely just a very padded bra.

SILVANA

Thanks so much, Jennie, for the witty recap. Well, I can answer Vivi’s question, I think. Adriana Barraza, our annoying Trini, is considered one of Mexico’s best actresses. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the film Babel. She was also in Dueños del Paraíso where she played Kate del Castillo’s awful mother – a prostitute who tried to sell her daughter at, I think, 14, to some evil guy. She was very good in the role. They had her reform a bit, but she did some bad stuff at the end. So she may have been promised a good sized role to be in the novela at all.

Stella is just contemptible. I didn’t think Poncho deserved to end up with her, but having seen his creepy behavior in trying to seduce Génesis, well…I’m probably OK with it. But, like most of her hare brained schemes, isn’t Génesis going to tell Poncho what she said when he seeks her out again?

Can AJ be more disgusting? Hiding behind the fridge (surprised it covered his bulk) to eavesdrop on his child speaking to her boyfriend.

Manuel is just an amazing father. I love it when he catches Angie and Jorge kissing and pretends to be worried about it. And when he jumped in between them. His children trust him implicitly and aren’t afraid to tell him what’s going on in their lives. Angie, on the other hand, looked nervous when he found them kissing. HER father probably caused that.

Silvana

Many thanks, J/Jennie, for making such an enjoyable recap out of such unpromising material. Add me to the people who loved your "Poncho - his little Poncho, actually..." And I enjoyed SpanProf's suggestion that "Maybe the Supremo did intervene. :)"

Anita, I'm hoping you're wrong about there being several more months of this novela. For some reason, I'm under the impression that it will come to an end in early January. Telemundo has started to show previews for La Fan, the novela set to follow it. I think even another four or five weeks is too long, but at least it's not several more months.

LA DOÑA

THIS IS NOT A RECAP! But it would be great if we had some volunteers. I’d do one a week, but that’s all. I’m still doing Silvana recaps twice a week.

Wow, Altagracia is a bit BSC. She pulled a gun on Saúl at the party. She then had Braulio, who is more villainous every episode, do a background check on him. She appeared impressed by all his work for abused women. But not enough to back off his poor father.

And Braulio told his wife that he and AG had picked her out of the herd as just the right dummy to use for corrupt legal stuff when she was still in law school. So he basically told her he didn’t care a rat’s patootie about her.

So the plot points are more like the novel as they are revealed. AG stole the construction company from her husband, Lázaro Hernández, just like Doña Bárbara stole the ranch from her husband. And AG threw him out into the street with, I think they said, the infant daughter. We still don’t have definite confirmation of who is Mónica’s father, Lázaro or one of the rapists. AG is DESPERATE that no one ever find out that she was married before and how she got the company in the first place. Braulio apparently knows all about it.

Saúl apparently went to law school with Valeria’s secretary/assistant. The guy is scared of AG, but agreed to help feed info to Saúl. And some other guy used to work for Lázaro and came to see him at the vecindad and was quite fond of him. But, IIRC, Braulio called AG’s attention to the fact that this guy came out of that location. They don’t know that Lázaro is there, but they wondered why his friend was there.

Mónica has come to say with a friend who used to live in Tamaulipas. I was wondering how they would afford a place in D.F. Of course, the place where she and Lázaro are staying is the very place where AG wants to get rid of all the tenants, raze it to the ground, and build a parking garage.

Silvana

I'll do a short recap tonight. I also have a Warriors basketball game to watch!

La Doña

Muchas gracias, novelera, for your not-a-recap recap. I found it very helpful. I'm still floundering, trying to figure out and remember who is who and what's going on. I definitely agree that Altagracia is BSC. She seemed a tiny bit less so in tonight's episode than when the novela started, but "a tiny bit less so" still leaves her a long way off from sanity.

La Doña
Thanks everyone for the recap and comments. I haven't been able to watch an episode yet but when I do, sorting out the characters should take me less time. Can someone please tell me what BSC means when referring to Altagracia?
Helen
