Vino el Amor 11/4/16 Chapter 9: About-Face

Bullet Points (some combined):

  • Luciana told Miguel that nothing improper happened at the river. “I'd never have anything to do with him. First, he's the boss. Second, he's crazy.” Miguel asked whether she knew what had happened to Lisa and she did, saying she would never have provoked this on purpose. Miguel reminded her of Lillian's reaction; she didn't care what that vitch thought. “But she will take it out on your mother.”

  • Sonia and Perla gossiped in the kitchen, attributing ulterior motives on Luciana's part for what had happened that afternoon and calling her vile names. Lillian entered on the tail end of this, telling them she doesn't want to hear any gossip, especially about David. She sent Perla out and Sonia apologized, but excused it on the grounds of what Lillian had told her about Luciana. Lillian excused her but told her that she was to win over the nietos because she wanted to get rid of Marta.
  • Bobby found Fernanda sneaking in and told her that Marta was looking for her. Marta came up from behind and Fernanda told her she had been hanging out with her friends. Marta reminded her she wasn't supposed to go anywhere without telling anyone. She didn't want David to find out, then she became afraid. As Marta began escorting them to their rooms Lillian arrived and called her name. Fernanda said she was tired and going to her room and quickly escaped. Lillian refused to allow Bobby to say goodnight to his father, saying David didn't want to be disturbed. He went to his room. Lillian then insinuated that something improper happened at the river that afternoon and made a threat.
  • Juan went into David's study wanting to know the details, but David didn't want to talk about it. Juan kept trying and David finally said he was worried about Luciana. He told Juan to find a job for her. Juan agreed to it, then tried to hand him the purchase proposal again. David told him to forget it.
  • Marta went to the employees' quarters to address the issue with Luciana, who was annoyed because she had only gone for a swim. Marta reminded her she was to be on her best behavior but Luciana felt like she was being sentenced without a hearing. She left the room.
  • Perla and Carito had another trash-talk fest, referring to Luciana as a “golfa” because of what they imagined happened at the river. Lillian is furious and they decided to make Luciana's life a living hell to get rid of her. [What dull little lives these little vitches must lead.]
  • Miguel and León talked about this. Miguel was actually jealous because his feelings for Luciana are much stronger than he thought. León didn't understand Miguel's feelings for Luciana due to the long separation.
  • Luciana went to the main house to see David, who was staring at a picture of Lisa. She went to return his jacket. He scolded her about entering the house and she tried to tell him that Lisa would not have wanted him to wallow in grief. He reproached her for this, saying “You weren't here when she died. Nothing is sadder than losing the love of your life. The desperation, the inability to save her.” He then caught himself talking about his feelings and ordered her to leave. She started to, then turned around saying “Yes, it can be that I don't know what it is to lose the love of my life, but I know how it is to lose someone one loves with all one's heart. My father lived his whole life trying to keep me from feeling the absence of my mother and brother. He always took care of and protected me. And believe me I felt desperate when he was dying and I couldn't do anything to save him. I could be bitter now, too, but I decided to move forward. And you can get rid of these ways in your house and see that reality is different.” “I would want to do that but this is my reality and I don't want to change,” was his reply. “Very well, don't worry. I won't bother you again.” She walked out.
  • The next day Fernanda sought Carlos out and wanted to give him some chocolate for what he did the day before. He refused to accept it in case other people got the wrong ideas about them. He didn't want to lose his job over this, so he said to forget about it because “I don't want any problems with your father.” Fernanda looked as though she didn't take any of this seriously. He said he didn't want to complicate things and she said “Don't forget who's in charge here.” She walked away and Susan arrived. She asked what was wrong and he said it was not her business.
  • Sonia barged into the employees' dining hall to interrupt their meal, as usual. She went on about them not keeping their hours. Miguel said that they worked the required number of hours, as usual, but that wasn't good enough for this reincarnated Victorian schoolmistress [who must have worked in Lowood in a previous life]. Luciana came down the stairs, saying “Good morning.” Marta barely said “Good morning, Princess” before Sonia yelled “Marta, your daughter can't stay here! She'll have to find work and pay rent!” [Someone give this woman a Valium with a Zoloft chaser!] Luciana faced her down and asked “Are you the boss around here?” Sonia said she wasn't but she was in charge of the big house and the employees' quarters (the latter said in a manner indicating distaste). She won't have anyone freeloading there. Miguel defended Luciana, saying she had every right to be there because she worked with them. He said she was the new supervisor of [???] Marta seemed to believe this, Sonia did a take, and the two little vitches were shocked. They immediately became petulant about this, accusing Miguel of influencing this situation. Luciana wasn't taking this. She told them she has a degree in agricultural engineering. Ramón stepped in to stop what certainly would have become uglier. Sonia said “We'll see what Señor David has to say about this.” She walked out. Luciana asked Miguel why he did that; he tried to assure her and Marta that he would take care of this. Carito and Erika got bitchy again and left Marta alone with León and Ramón.
  • Juan and Lillian vitched about Luciana in his office with Lillian accusing Luciana of going to the river to get David's attention. Again she came out with the “z” word, accusing Luciana of pursuing David for his dinero. “She's exactly like her mother,” she went on. [How is it nobody calls her out on this obvious delusion?] Juan asked how she knew and she answered “I know. People can't hide their true natures.” [Since we haven't seen her looking in a mirror we have to wonder whether she even has a reflection.] Juan told her he couldn't get any details because David was in a foul mood. [At the current rate he'll find out nothing.]
  • César arrived and talked to Susan, who was concerned about the condition of the wine and the low production. At his disclosure about the proposed sale of the lands she said that it couldn't be because this was the best land for a vineyard. Some age-appropriate flirtation ensued. Susan said she loved her work and could lose it due to Juan's efforts at getting the land sold.
  • Luciana and Miguel took a walk and she continued about not wanting him to lose his job over what just happened. He's not too concerned about that. She said she'd find work and lodgings elsewhere, but he reminded her she needed documents. She doesn't want to owe anyone any favors. He professed his love for her since they were children and they ran through the fields as they did when they were children. She ran to the main house and through the open front door which – as predicted – provoked David's usual ire. He made a comment about her not having been taught to knock on a door. She went on about knocking being for closed doors, etc., [which must be irritating most viewers by now] until Miguel interrupted her and led her just outside. He told David that he had hired Luciana to supervise [???]
  • David was angry. He got on Luciana's case about her behavior and disrespect. [Lillian must be possessing him.] She would not allow Miguel to speak for her, insisting to David that she would like to help, that she has a degree in agricultural engineering with a specialty in oenology. When he tried to insult her education she reminded him that she had learned from her father who had also taught her to love this land. He took her on but not as a supervisor, then ordered them to talk to Juan. Miguel quickly led her out to avoid any more confrontational words.
  • Perla went into Juan's office to ask a favor: not to allow Luciana to work in the vineyard. After pulling down the shades on the glass wall and another iteration of the “g” word later she told him he was not to go near her. Juan told her that jealousy was a weakness he didn't tolerate. He then told her to go back to work. She left the office, obviously disappointed at the lost opportunity to use sex to manipulate Juan.
  • One more time Luciana tried to tell Miguel she could do this herself, but he didn't argue. Instead he told her to see Juan and tell him she had just spoken to David. Luciana was determined to do better than her best. Miguel went back to work and Luciana saw Bobby. She introduced herself but he didn't seem very interested. She guessed that he had had differences with someone at school and won. She talked to him about his games and other things Marta had told her about him. He went to get his soccer ball. This looked like the beginning of winning him over.
  • David stared at Lisa's picture and remembered her distress at the separation of Marcos and Luciana from Marta and León. César came in and David told him he had hired Luciana. César thought this was a good thing and that her knowledge will help him solve his problems. David was beginning to lean toward selling the vineyard, being caught between the love for it and the memories on it. César started seeing evidence of change and told him how much better he will feel when he gets in touch with his lands again. Juan arrived during the tail end of this and David told him Luciana was hired on trial. “If all goes well I want her papers completed within three months.” Juan tried to talk him out of it but failed. David told him that Luciana would be on her way to his office. Juan left.
  • David hung up his jacket, the one Lisa had given him for his birthday. He thought about her, then about Luciana. Luciana was outside playing soccer with Bobby who kicked the ball hard enough for it to go through the door and knock Lisa's photo off the desk. The glass shattered and David's ire came up. He yelled for Sonia who blamed Luciana for this. Lillian had seen the boy kick the ball, but blamed Luciana in front of David. Bobby tried to tell the truth but Luciana was willing to take the blame to protect him. David was not out of the darkness yet, yelling at her that she was there to work and not play. She said something about just having been hired and David said she could just as easily be dismissed. Lillian and Sonia were enjoying this. Luciana finally said she couldn't work for anyone who changed his mind as he did and that she could find work anywhere. Lillian directed Sonia to take Bobby inside and offered to take charge. Luciana told her off, saying she had no authority over someone who didn't work there, then told David “It's one thing to be bitter and another to be unfair.” Then she walked away.
  • León came into the kitchen in the main house to find Carito bitchin' and moanin' as she cleaned up. She told him that things aren't going well for her with Miguel and blamed Luciana. More accusations against Luciana of manipulative behavior by her including that of taking advantage of his friendship with Miguel.
  • Bobby refused to allow Sonia to play with him. She told him he would have to obey her and get used to it because certainly Marta would be leaving with her daughter. “So then I'll go with them,” he said. Marta came in and said she'd take care of things. Sonia retreated, tripping on the way out of the room. Bobby told Marta he got into a fight in school, but also that his father fired Luciana. She got him to sit down and explain it in detail. She told him that he should tell his father the truth. He will be proud of the boy's courage and also see he was being unfair.
  • David returned to the study and started picking up the photo and the broken glass. Sonia came in to help and he ordered her not to touch anything of Lisa's. He took the ball out of the room and she stood there, confused and [we hope] embarrassed.
  • Luciana vented to Miguel without going into the details of what happened that afternoon. She decided she didn't want to work there anymore. He tried to make her change her mind. He was obviously flirting with her but it wasn't obvious how she felt about it. He probably didn't notice that part.
  • Carlos began confiding in León that he has the hots for Susan but doesn't feel worthy of her. León pointed out that he fights with Carito and Miguel with Luciana. They are trying to understand women but feel like they can't. [We have to wonder if they really want to.]
  • Lillian threatened Marta again with dismissal.
  • Juan entered the employees' building – without knocking – and found Luciana. He said he was expecting her at his office but she told him it was unnecessary as she had been fired. “Let's just say it was a last-minute decision” she said. He offered to speak to David for her “in honor of your father and everything he did for us”, touching her arms as he said this. She pulled away and said “You should of thought of that before they deported him. You can go back to your work. I'll make it on my own.” “Well, if you need help, my door is open, guapa.” [I don't like the sound of this.]
  • David took the soccer ball and the photo of Lisa to his room and put them on the bed. He took out another photo and the video of the birthday party where he gave the ball to Bobby. He smiled for the first time in two years.
  • Luciana and Marta talked about what just happened. Luciana told her she can't deal with these people. She told her mother she could have done the same work in Mexico and probably gotten better pay. At least they would have been together. Things seem even worse now. Marta told her that things aren't as bad as they look. “So this is all my fault?” Luciana asked her. “No,” but she also told her that it might be better if she didn't stay.

Excellent recap UA.

bitchin' and moanin'

Boy, both David and Luciana got short fuses and getting tired of them barking over any little thing.

Thank you Luciana for telling your mother what I've wanted to tell her. Marta's sacrifice, maintaining the separation from her husband and daughter, was not necessary. Luciana's presence disrupts Marta's world so get out. Hope Luciana uses her head, gets a letter of recommendation from Miguel and goes to work at another Vineyard.

Not going to happen. She's here to stay because David needs to fall in love with her and she needs to expose Lillian and Juan.

The younger Mean Girls should learn that trash-talking another girl/woman will not score them points with men. We'll eventually hear them trying to disparage Luciana's education (that's a prediction, not a spoiler) and anything else they can think of. Miguel should just ignore them all.

There are some casting anomalies in this story. I can't imagine any DNA connexion between the actor playing Leon and the rest of the family. Or between Lillian and her daughters.

Schedule Announcement

There will be no prime-time novelas on Tuesday due to election coverage.

UA: I'm in agreement with you on the Mean Girls slandering Luciana's education, image & smearing her family too.

I'm also predicting the Body Count will increase!

UA thank you for the recap. I didn't watch last night so this really caught me up!

Interesting how just reading it now - if I read this recap without any context or previous recaps - I'd definitely be team Luciana should leave the vineyard! It sounds like a miserable place. Of course that's now how it will play out.

Still team Miguel/Luciana too.

UA, you are in the zone today! :) Wonderful recap...

"reincarnated Victorian schoolmistress", "age-appropriate flirtation" and my favorite "They are trying to understand women but feel like they can't. [We have to wonder if they really want to]" were wonderful.

But it was your comments that made me smile brightly: "[Someone give this woman a Valium with a Zoloft chaser!" and "[Since we haven't seen her looking in a mirror we have to wonder whether she even has a reflection]. Great.

Yes,”Juan told her he couldn't get any details because David was in a foul mood”. He has been in a bad mood for two straight years, hasn’t he? Time to stop the pity party.

“Miguel reminded her of Lillian's reaction; she didn't care what that vitch thought. “But she will take it out on your mother.” Miguel is an intuitive voice of reason. A nice, sweet man. And therefore of course, “doomed” to “lose the girl” in the end. Sigh.

"Sonia retreated, tripping on the way out of the room". The mean girl in me smiled with satisfaction. She is just so miserable. I am hoping there will be a redemptive miracle as the actress has such a comedic, loving presence which is being wasted here.

Nice to see signs of life in David watching the video. Can't wait for him to morph into the hunk I know he is. ;)

Still, there is too much grimness here and everything and everyone is devoid of humor. And light. I agree with you tofie and dy that Luci should definitely go elsewhere. But, I suspect that won't happen.

UA, thank you!

Diana

Diana: Wouldn't surprise me if Lillian has Marta deported, imprisoned or worse.

She wants to exterminate Luciana's remaining family.

Thanks, Urban.

I've got whiplash from Luciana's hiring, firing, hiring, firing...

UA--Thank you ever so much, for both this wonderful recap and the Weekend Bodas. I have to confess, I read the recap before I watched it. The scenes in my head were different from the ones I saw, but you captured all the action.

For those of you who are still puzzled by the women and who is interested in which one or which men are interested in which woman, here's a short run-down. (I think I've got them all straight. For now I will leave off David and Luciana, because they are currently at odds, both verbally and in their body language.)

THE WOMEN
Graciela - Wants David to be the man in her life, but she's temporarily out of the story
Luciana - Miguel has been in love with her since they were children
Marta - Ramon has been secretly in love with her before Marcos ever left; did we see a flicker of interest from Gutierrez?
Liliana - Gutierrez seemed interested in her 12 years ago; now she keeps him on a string for special favors; other than him, no one gives her the eye
Perla (was the snippy child who never liked Luci) - Juan likes/uses her more as a diversion
Carito - Leon is interested in her, but is aware she is chasing Miguel
Sonia - (Lili's Victorian schoolmistress assistant) Although she pines for David, he's not even aware of her; with her attitude, I'm not surprised no one else is
Susana - Carlos' heart goes pitter pat for her, but she's not aware of it; Dr. Cesar has taken an interest in her
Fernanda - She's only a young teenager, but she's jail bait for Carlos who knows he'd better keep her at arms length

THE MEN
David - Graciela has been enviously in love with him for ever and Sonia is sniffing around him
Miguel - Carito definitely has a thing for him; Luciana loves him--like a brother, maybe; she hasn't declared herself but I can't see that he sparks any romantic notions in her
Leon - Nobody seems interested in him, so far
Ramon - Nobody seems interested in him either, so far
Juan - Perla has only had eyes for him since she was a child and he takes advantage of what favors she offers; Susana rejected him and so did Luciana
Carlos - Fernanda has a schoolgirl crush on him and seems to be putting herself out there to get his attention; he presents a challenge to her
Cesar - Now that he's met Susana, he keeps finding ways to see her and somehow get her to return the interest; so far it's just friendly interest on her part

THE CONFLICTS
Luciana-Miguel-Carito (and through her, Perla)
Leon-Carito-Miguel
Cesar-Susana-Carlos
Fernanda-Carlos
Marcos-Marta-Ramon (sort of resolved for Ramon now, but if Gutierrez enters the picture, he will back away--I think)
Sonia-David (if anyone butts in line in front of her, she has the mean-ness and power to kick her out of the line--namely Luciana)

Oh, ok, I'll put Miguel-Luciana-David in here

Anita: my thoughts.

David: Art 2.0

Luciana: Isabel 2.0

Fernanda: Aranza 2.0

Graciela: Sofia 2.0

Lillian: Deborah Sanders 2.0

Gutierrez: Self-hating idiot, who wants to be Anglo.

Perla: I want this evil witch to get am anvil! Hopefully deadly.

Carito: She wants Miguel, so expect her to join the Villains in attacking Luciana's character, etc.,

Sonia: Can you say mental institution ?

Ramon: Any chance we might see him & Marta together in the end ? Barring something crazy.

Anita, thank you very, very much for listing who's who and who wants who. Whom (?)

I don't think I'm sure who Carito is. Is she the young brunette with bangs and below shoulder length hair?

I have cut and pasted this and put it on my desktop for reference.

Everyone is so morose, they seem so similar. Sigh.

Diana

I got a bit tired of last night's, "you're hired! No you're fired! kind of thing. Would somebody please put a sock in Lilian's mouth, please? And those mean girls wanting a cat fight with Luciana, would somebody please calm them down? Luciana is exponentially smarter and wittier than all of them put together. I like her spunk, but it seems to be getting her into trouble. She needs to calm down herself and find the right time and strike with a knock out punch to whoever is needing it.

I think Lilian when she is speaking English, sounds like the British lady on the GPS. LOL!

Except I haven't heard any consistency in her accent. I've heard a few vowels that sound Cockney, which is certainly not how this woman sees herself.

Can someone please explain why the English subtitles and the spoken dialogue refer to Carlos as Tano? Is Tano his nickname? Someone (Urban?) on the Patio wrote that "Tano" is a derogatory term. So, why would that word be used?

The cast list shows Tano as Carlos' nickname.

Isn't odd that Perla and Miguel, who have been on the property since they were kids, aren't related to any of the older characters? We never met either of their parents.

Character List:

Marcos Muñoz Pérez
Marta Estrada Vda. de Muñoz
Luciana Muñoz Estrada
León Muñoz Estrada

David Robles Morán
Lisa Palacios de Robles
Fernanda Robles Palacios
Bobby Robles Palacios
Lilian Palacios
Graciela Palacios

Juan Téllez
Susan O'Neal-Williams
César Callejas
Sonia Ortiz
Bryan Gutiérrez

Ramón Flores
Carlos Flores "Tano"

Miguel Díaz
Perla Vidal
Carolina González "Carito"

Looked up Tano. In Latin America, it's used as a nickname (many times derogatory, but can also be affectionate) for someone of Italian descent. It also means stubborn in Argentina.

oooh italiano 'tano' .. sounds similar i guess? maybe he's of italian or argentinian descent?

also want to say that ive been keeping up with this show ever since it started and i LOVE david and luciana!! and i also love the scenery and music used in this. what i dont love is (if its a spoiler be free to delete) that it's a very very slow build soap especially when it comes to the leads. and very dry on humor :/ this soap needs a little bit of wack from one of mejias 'barrio' characters.

I don't like Mejias' obsession with comic relief. It has ruined almost all of his productions that I've seen. One weekly dosage is OK but he insisted on having it in every episode and I have to wonder whether that's to cover up bad writing of any kind.

For a drama novela to be effective it has to move the audience to the level of emotion that opera does and have an emotional impact that lasts until the next episode. That often doesn't happen with his more recent work and all his comic relief does is irritate us.

UA--I agree. Thank Goodness this is NOT a Mejia product. Jose Alberto Castro (IMHO of the ones I watched or heard about) has had some duds along the way and goes for the tears (Corona de Lagrimas, La Malquerida). He has had one outstanding hit, La Que No Podia Amar. Pasion y Poder (sniff) could have been so much better. But he is consistent in getting good actors and the stories don't get ridiculous.

That said, he's imminently watchable and I'm in on this one for the long haul.

Diana--Carito hasn't been too visible, so I understand your confusion. In Friday's episode, she and Perla (lighter brown hair) were dissing Luciana in the kitchen when Lilian came in and broke up the mean-girls party.

Steve--I'm picky about the telenovelas I watch, so I did not understand most of your references to "seems like" characters.

I wouldn't put Perla in the "evil witch" who needs an anvil status. Maybe not yet. She's mostly self-absorbed by her affair with Juan and in her fantasy believes this will turn into a public affirmation of couplehood and permanent paring. Lots of luck, girl--although I do think you are quite attractive.

Steve's latest post is comparing this show's characters to those in Por Siempre Mi Amor which was edited to death by Univision. Fortunately I saw the Mexican version of it which retained most of the comic scenes, some of which were brilliant.

Its male villain was so over the top I thought no future one could outdo him until LQLVMR happened.

Thanks, Urban. It was one I didn't watch!

Nice work, Nevahadanick, thank you bunches.

Yikes ! What a trainwreck. It has already been two years? I tell you what, when Irenta Beava goes skivvy dippin again call me, otherwise this is as boring as tenth grade.

good recap Urban. The episode was just wacky as usual. David's heart is probably moving a little, but not much. It's like he's determined to hold on to Lisa as much as possible that's understandable she was the love of his life but his life and the little people he and Lisa made together are fallen through the cracks of grief, and that's when any and everybody can take advantage. And look at what's happening, the backstabbing BFF and the Mom in law from Hell,or Middle Earth. take your pick. And they're doing just that. Luciana seems to be the only one with a sound mind, she sees these people are crazy and wants to leave. but David needs someone around with a brain because his is in Lisa Overdrive, his daughters hormones are taking over and his son is at the mercy of evil nana.I really hope this week is better than last week. David is getting on my last nerve with this prolonged grief Fest. I know he gotta grieve but stuff is going down he need to take notice of. In a hurry.

Thanks Urban.

I once worked with a guy named Cayetano, whose nickname was Tano.

Anon at 5:00--
That makes sense. What we are all mystified by and has gone unexplained, is how they got the nickname Tano out of Carlos' given name.

Oh I really love Castros work, it's always done with good taste and great plot. I haven't seen LQNPA (sadly) but I have seen his other works and I was especially impressed by La Malquerida. One of the best Televisa productions in recent years, at least in my opinion.

And Mejia is... Mejia. I liked his older work a lot and now he's just become a producer I try to avoid. I just feel like this novela needs a bit of relief. It's pretty dark and I do like Bobby being the cute little kid and everything but I wish there was a bit more. But definitely not those fools from TDA.. never again.

Luciana needs to calm down!

Hello! I like this tn! However, I get so extremely irritated by the mean girls. What exactly are they? vineyard workers?(I am just comparing so excuse my looking at their position in life) If someone needs to be mean and snobby to them I should think Luciana who is a degree holder. What is it agricultural engineer and a degree in oenology.Well, knocking on doors is another story. I guess she was transported when she was young and got so used to feeling at home during that time that she has forgotten that times have changed.

Luciana needs to calm down! Um...she needs to go for another swim Steve.

I like the way lucy is. Somebody in that clan
Needs to have some backbone. Her mom wimps out when lil comes around. She should defend herself, she don't have to worry about her kids, they're all grown up. Im glad luciana Don't back down from any of them b..vitches. Her Dad raised a strongh kid. Soneone in that family has to be. Thats why david likes Her, She challenges him. And I don't think he knows what to make of her. So in the future Episodes its gonna be fun watchin him figure Her out.

Thanks, Urban! I admire the effort you've put into these bullet-point recaps. They are bullet-point recaps in terms of punctuation only - otherwise, they're pretty thorough. Plus you still manage to get in comments like this: "Since we haven't seen her looking in a mirror we have to wonder whether she even has a reflection."

I agree with you on the DNA-blind casting. I like the actor who plays Leon, but every time I look at him, I see his father Eugenio Derbez. As for Lilian's daughters, I can only assume that their father was the pretty one.

Also, regarding Mejia's approach to comic relief: "I have to wonder whether that's to cover up bad writing of any kind." If that's the intent, it doesn't work. You can still see the bad writing, and the "humor" only makes it more obvious. It's like smashing an expensive vase and then saying "just kidding!" ANd then doing it again.

Back to the vineyard. It doesn't make much sense for David to refuse the sale, since he's not taking any interest in the wine business, and the entire property seems to make him miserable reminding him of Lisa. This is our proof that he's putting some serious effort and intent into his wallowing. He's not trying to feel better - he's trying NOT to feel better.

And I'm putting some effort and intent into liking this show. I'm frustrated by the number of petty, backbiting vitches (and varlocks?) on the staff, especially since I still can't tell Erika and Perla apart. (I don't think they even look that much alike, I just need to see them side-by-side wearing nametags for a little while. I used to have the same problem with Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck. True story. I guess it was the mustaches.) I don't have any problem with Carito; her hair is darker.

Lilian isn't fun either, although I do like her scenes with Gutierrez - I think that actor is a borderline scene-stealer. Ditto Sonia. Otherwise, the entertainment is a challenge. As so often happens, it is the recaps and the commenters who are making this bearable. But I'm hanging in there in the hopes that things will get better.

I think Luciana's new (and revoked) job was supervisor of a vineyard work crew. Or supervisor of one section of the vineyard, like the health of the grapes? (I don't remember the actual words, just that she'd be supervising a portion of the people and/or the land.)

Thank you Anita for sorting out the characters and Vivi for figuring out the Carlos/Tano thing. That was super helpful!

Julie, I'm struck by your comment that you are putting in effort into liking this. I find I'm having to do the same. I think I was really expecting something else. Hoping it will improve or at least be a little more fun to watch. Like Tom said, above, it needs a little bit of fun (for me anyway). (Ha ha maybe this is why I don't have the issues with Mejia shows that most have; I loved LI.)

LQNPA is on now by the way, AMs on Galavision starting this week.

Who is Erika?

The only female characters I've seen are:

Lisa
Marta
Lilian
Graciela
Fernanda
Luciana
Carito
Perla
Susan
Sonia

Who is Erika?

Erika is another snotty girl.

This show isn't must see TV for me...the only character that is remotely interesting to me is Gutierrez. And maybe Bobby. That's it.

I'm tired of Luciana barking and walking up in David's house.

I'm tired of David leaving his doors open for Luciana to walk up in.

I'm tired of Marta crying.

I'm tired of Lilian sneering.

I'm tired of Graciela's whole "Lisa better than me" whine. it's old, it's tired.

I'm tired of tired wenches like Sonia*, Carito and Perla*.

I'm tired of evil, resentful friends like Juan.

*Sonia and Perla could be interesting...like Sonia SHOULD be comic relief and Perla seemed like an empty soul even as a child...who are her people? Why is she like this?

But like I said, Gutierrez is about the only character that's holding my interest. I just don't see it for Luciana and David. He should be trying to mack on Susan, and then there could be a 4 (or 5 if you include Gutierrez) way love square between David, Cesar and Juan for Susan's affections.

Meanwhile, Luciana and Miguel should be in a love pentagon with Leon, Carito and Perla.

And then perhaps Sonia and Cesar get together after he accepts the fact David & Susan are made for each other etc etc.

I'm thinking LooneyVision barfed this up and it was originally written to show at around 3:30 in the afternoon, right after school. You know, right before La Rosa de Guadalupe? And where are the Skittles commercials? I'm corn-fused.

I'm as puzzled as you are over Erika. In IMDB, she doesn't show up until later episodes (appx. #57). We should recognize her, though. Barbara Lopez played Lucero in Un Camino Hacia el Destino (the schoolgirl who married psycho-prof Diego).

Is this a remake of anything?

I would have put Erika's existence down to a captioning error, except I thought I heard someone address her by name once.

But if I imagined that, and "Erika" really was a captioning error, then no wonder I mixed her up with Perla... she WAS Perla.

In fact, I just looked up Barbara Lopez, and she's not familiar. If that's Erika, we haven't met her yet.

So, never mind. There's one fewer snotty girl than I thought, which is fine. We already have more than enough.

Julie, this is a remake of "La Chúcara" from Chile. Young girl finds widower.

Also, Luciana's job was to be supervisor of the "pisca," which my dictionary says is to harvest corn, coffee, or cotton by pulling it apart by hand.

Anon at 2:02--
I thought I heard "pisca," too, but didn't look it up. It sounded like something I'd heard before and now that you defined it, I remembered. It was in Cuando Seas Mia with Silvia Navarro and Sergio Basanez. The estate owners would bring in and hire temporary workers to harvest the crop (coffee in this case) and then they leave and go home after the harvest. Sometimes, this is all the money they earned all year. I guess this is their version of migrant workers--because they stayed at the estate until the harvest (cosecha) was in. This tn was based on Café con Aroma de Mujer with Guy Ecker and the one that Destilando Amor was based on, but I still haven't seen this one. I think they had a different crop.

Oh right - in Destilando Amor it was the agave harvest, for making tequila. So Luciana would be supervising the harvest, and it would just be a temporary/seasonal job? But a chance to prove herself during that time. Makes sense.
