Vino el Amor, Lunes 12/19/16 Chapter 35: Reflections in a Soulless Eye

After Luciana and David had their differences over what had happened the day before David admitted he was jealous when he saw her with Miguel. She told him she and Miguel were certain that Gracie was behind what had happened when she and Miguel tried to get into the party. David didn't quite believe her story. She was hurt he didn't believe her.

Brian met with Lillian in a restaurant but failed to extricate himself from her grasp. She held her alleged social position over him. She has him over a social barrel and knows it.

Marta and León were in the kitchen in the employees' quarters talking about Brian. She decided that – because he admitted to having been a border patrolman – she was canceling their date on Sunday. Miguel said this would make Ramon really happy because he really was into her.

Susan and Tano were having a difficult time working together when Fernanda came in to tease him a bit more and inciting him to become jealous of Peter. Tano was still wondering what all this was about. [Carlos, niño, you still have too much to learn.] He was not handling this well.

David and Gracie were in town talking about how successful the wine presentation had been and the new clients they were expecting. She also told him she had sold all of her paintings as well. [Something sounds rather fishy about that one.] They went on to visit more prospective clients... after which he demanded an explanation as to why Luciana and Miguel's names were left off the list. Gracie – cold as ice, as usual – blamed the hostess for this, which David was still suspicious about. She talked a mile a minute about how she couldn't understand why he was still peeved about this because it was unimportant, segueing into her exit.

Luciana and Miguel were also in town making the rounds of suppliers when he suggested they stop to eat somewhere. It bothered him that Luciana still had the previous evening on her mind. What bothered her the most was that David would not believe that Gracie was the responsible party. She was eager to prove this, but Miguel didn't think there was a way to. He got her to calm down so they could talk about him taking her away to San Francisco for the weekend.

Gracie returned to the fermentation plant and went to Juan's office to boast of the new clients and the success. She made fun of what Luciana's speech would have been about and he told her he didn't care about the workers or any related thing. All that mattered to him was that things turn out as he and Lillian were planning. He demanded half the proceeds from her share. Gracie refused. He persisted, throwing back her words about the only thing she cared about was David. She conceded that, but said that she wouldn't give him a cent until she actually ended up with David [which we believe should be about a millennium after hell freezes over]. She walked out of his office and he began looking her up online.
She called her “friend” José in Spain to tell him to get the autographed items from the soccer player. He refused, confused at how she had become a different person since returning to the vineyard. She gave him the whole BS about how her family needed her like a hole in the head and how unimportant they were to her. He was not pleased with her caprices and she was not pleased that he wasn't kissing her butt.

Miguel went to David's office to request a few days' vacation for himself an Luciana. At the sound of her name David immediately refused on the grounds that now there is even more work to be done. Orders for both the reserve and the new wine will need to be filled. Miguel became as impulsively direct as Luciana and asked David if there was a more personal reason for his refusal. David accused him of slacking off his normally good work since Luciana arrived. Miguel denied this and told him they were on the case. “You won't like the results.” David didn't lose his cool when Miguel said they suspected Juan but didn't yet have proof. David said he needed to get it because he didn't want to accuse without proof. Since Miguel also suspected that the temp workers had false papers, David told him he had been careless and needed to clean up his act. This ended without any macho posturing [for a change].

Perla caught Juan looking at photos of Gracie in the Madrid art gallery posing with her sugar daddy in front of the paintings. She was livid and charged into the office to demand what he was doing. He was not pleased she had caught him and tried lying his way out of it when she asked if he had the hots for the ice queen. She tried to game him by saying she wouldn't help him anymore because they couldn't trust each other. He called her bluff and said he wouldn't expect her to. [Too bad, tontita.] She fell for this and turned around to apologise. He manipulated her in the usual way using her failure to obey requests orders and she fell for it. Her latest assignment was to find out how much money Gracie was going to get for her paintings so he could negotiate more and get a piece of the action. [It is truly sick how he's using this girl, bad though she is.]

Back at the employee barracks, Miguel told Luciana that David didn't grant the vacation day request. She was furious and went off like a cherry bomb. After all the extra work they did when the others were sick! Despite Miguel's objection she went straight out the door to go to the main house. He stood there feeling foolish. She marched straight into David's study without knocking and they got straight to it. He gave a list of things that needed to be done and she calmly told him that it was all under control. She wanted to know the real reason he was stopping them from going away for the weekend. Was he really able to separate work from personal?

León – in the shirt he had shrunk when he made mistakes doing the laundry – ran into Carito (literally) and presented her with a hooker-pink tote bag that looked like it came from Victoria's Secret. It contained some flowered thing he said was to replace what he ruined in the wash. [Gotta admire his persistence and his nerve.] She was appropriately embarrassed but ungracious, saying she preferred what she had lost. Finally she ended up thanking him and went back upstairs.

David went on about all the orders they would need to fill in order to get the debts paid and the other things that needed doing, but Luciana wouldn't let go of the Miguel issue. David demanded to know if she was still angry over what had happened at the presentation. Of course she was, and she needed room to breathe after that. She reminded him that he told her to give Miguel a chance and now he appeared to be reneging.

Gracie and Juan had another conversation about the sale of her paintings [I knew she was lying before]. She said she wouldn't get as much money as she could have gotten in Europe; she doesn't have the liquidity she had upon arrival. He said David needed an injection of capital until the wine was actually sold, which would not be happening in a day. She fast-talked him in a way that is obvious to us that she doesn't trust him. He had to guarantee her becoming a major shareholder to get anything out of her. He promised. She told him she'd come up with the money with the sale of the paintings but he would have to convince David that he needed her. She gave him her most soulless stare before leaving him on the corner. We went after her, asking if there was adequate time for her to paint and sell before the money would be needed. She told him not to worry, she would do anything to make this happen. He mentioned her obsession and she denied being obsessed with David, saying that what she felt for him was love. Juan wasn't dumb enough to believe that and said she was incapable. She threw it in his face that he failed to capture her sister. He reminded her that she had a deal with him and her mother. She walked away like it didn't bother her and he was just a gnat to snap away.

César stopped over and David confessed that his jealousy was getting the better of him. César didn't like seeing him this way, as he wasn't the kind of boss to take advantage of his position in this situation. He was afraid David would say something he would later regret. David finally decided [for what nth time?] to buck up, hide his pain, and be a boss about it. He got up, saying he would go to the employees' barracks and give them the weekend off.

Susan was working in the office when Tano came in to tell her he missed her and would be there for her. No lovey-dovey action, just longing looks. [We've had enough.]

Peter came over to bring Bobby the latest video games and to tell Fernanda that he would be leaving on a trip with his parents shortly. His sister is getting married in Italy but he'd rather stay and hang out with Fernanda. [Really, kid? You can do better.] She told him he “had to go” since it was his sister's wedding. He then asked if she would like to come along. The little opportunist got excited at the idea of Italy but said she didn't think her family would let her. She invited him to take a walk in the vineyards but he said he'd rather play video games with Bobby. This ended with him taking his leave, as he was leaving on the trip in the morning. Bobby thought this all very weird.

Carito tried on the dress and... it's a perfect fit. Even Perla was impressed. Carito was still disappointed that it wasn't Miguel who bought it. [Will she ever get that Miguel is not for her? That's a rhetorical question.] Perla basically told her not to look a gift horse in the mouth and to give Leon a chance.

Juan met with Mark who told him he had a contact with a large network of illegal immigrants. He didn't speak English, but that didn't faze Juan. The man entered the room and would not shake Juan's proferred hand. Juan made him an offer of 20%, but ended up with a deal where he chose the route (through San Diego) and the coyote could keep all the money the workers paid him to get in. He made an evil grin and... this is the same one who tried to sell Luciana as merchandise 14 years ago. El Coyote asked why the deal was what it wasso good and Juan said something to him about being a go-between because Mark did not trust Latinos. El Coyote didn't like this one bit, saying that if the deal sours he'll kill him. Mark doesn't seem to speak Spanish, but he had a bad vibe about this. So did Juan.

There was a weird little flirtation between Leon and Sonia when she arrived at the employees' barracks. He invited her out but she swanned her way out of it, saying she had to check her agenda and went inside as Carito came out in the dress he had bought her. He liked how it looked on her. She thanked him and Sonia returned to accept his offer for a date. Carito was a little weirded out by this.

Luciana took out her anger on the work and Miguel told her to calm down. He got her to stop and then hugged her. Wherever they were, what did that matter as long as they were together? Of course David's timing was as bad as ever and he saw them kissing. No, he didn't give them the weekend off. He walked off saying he was going to get work done. From the other direction came DisGracie of the soulless eyes and blood-red lips.

Sonia returned to the kitchen in the main house only to have Lillian confide in her that she intended to engage an unwitting Adolfo as competition for her so that Brian would appreciate her more. Sonia appeared to be mentally taking notes.

David met with Susan for some business talk, finally leaving Luciana to be mentioned last. He asked whether she had been working with the same enthusiasm as before. She told him that Luciana was very upset over the night of the presentation and he pointed out that she had her chance to go in, but left with Miguel. Susan was angry on Luciana's behalf and David realized that some of Susan's own issues were the reason for that.

After a few uncomfortable words, Miguel left. Luciana called DisGracie out over the guest list incident and accused her of having the hots for David. DisGracie looked at her through her goat eyes and admitted it, saying there wasn't a single thing she could do about it. Luciana looked as though she knew she was facing Satan.

Thank you so much UA.

What a contrast

"She was furious and went off like a cherry bomb"

"..of the soulless eyes and blood-red lips"

Juan and Mark looked way out of their league with El Coyote

Why ruin Sonia trying to pair her with Leon?

Of course nothing can ever be Luciana's fault. She's perfect

Come on, let the kids screw already.

I can't get past Gutierrez's clown cop costume

Urban, marvelous as always. A delightful read from start to finish. The screen shots were excellent.

Along with the excellent quotes tofie mentioned, "Brian met with Lillian in a restaurant but failed to extricate himself from her grasp…She has him over a social barrel and knows it", "his ended without any macho posturing [for a change]" and "No lovey-dovey action, just longing looks. [We've had enough]" were among my very favorites.

"He made an evil grin and... this is the same one who tried to sell Luciana as merchandise 14 years ago". UA, thank you for this very important piece of information. I hadn’t recognized El Coyote, but I should have remembered that wolfish face and countenance. Luci seems rather like a lamb awaiting slaughter. Brian is right out view and now, an equally vile nemesis,El Coyote is also hovering on the perimeter of discovery.

I'm a bit surprised (but pleased)Marta cancelled her date with Brian. While this is just delaying the inevitable discovery of what he did, he is now going to be beholden even more to Lili and will need to learn to smile and dance to whatever tune she chooses to play for him."DisGracie looked at her through her goat eyes and admitted it, saying there wasn't a single thing she could do about it.

I don't want Luci and Miguel to sleep together if she does end up with David. Miguel is besotted enough and I fear if they are intimate, he will be even more heartbroken if they do not end up together. I hope the yet to be introduced new character will be a love interest for him. Perhaps she will have a friend for the hapless Leon? And yes, tofie, I do not see Sonia and Leon as a love match either. Can we hope there will be someone for our fabulous third banana Sonia??

UA, this was fantastic. Thank you, thank you.

Diana

I was trying to say "DisGracie looked at her through her goat eyes and admitted it, saying there wasn't a single thing she could do about it" portends very evil things to come, doesn't it??

Diana

Diana, if Luciana was wobbly about Miguel I'd say don't "San Francisco" but Luciana is more than ready. It's possible after they "San Francisco" she will be the one hurt if Miguel wanted to "San Francisco" another.

Thanks, guys. This was the quick and dirty version because I was hoping to go out last night but ended up staying home with a sore left knee after shopping.

I went back to the first week to check because I had to confirm that this guy was El Coyote -- another good reason to do screen shots! He's obviously doing very well in terms of dinero, but here's someone else Luciana should recognize. How do you forget anyone like this?

Tofie, You're right in saying that Juan and Mark are completely out of their depth with him. Good. I couldn't figure out whether they realized that but they definitely looked scared. Even better. My main concern as I wrote this is that Juan is looking to deport Luciana as soon as her visitor's visa is up and he may try to get rid of her by getting this guy to do it.

More later.

"My main concern as I wrote this is that Juan is looking to deport Luciana as soon as her visitor's visa is up and he may try to get rid of her by getting this guy to do it".

tofie, yes, Juan and Mark are over their heads. And I agree with your comment above UA. However, my fear is El Coyote "getting rid of her" will mean he takes Luci prisoner. He liked her pluck and courage when she was a child. He will not be able to contain his salivating when he sees she is even feistier. And of course, she is downright gorgeous to boot. Ack. That thought alone makes my skin crawl.

Diana

"Soulless eyes and blood-red lips." Well played, UA. Y'know the thing about Graciela, she's got lifeless eyes, gray eyes...like a doll's eyes...

Ahem.

Bringing back the coyote from early in the show does make me wonder if this means Gutierrez either gets a pass or at least manages to avoid the worst of his role in Marcos and Luciana's deportation coming out. Or, conversely, if he's the reason it comes out in the first place. That said, next to Graciela and Juan El Coyote is suddenly Villain #3. (Sorry, Lilian. As pretty as you are, right now you're just a rich bitch with jealousy issues. Basically, Perla at 50.) Mark the gringo speaking even worse accented English than Gutierrez, let alone Juan, just adds to the hilarity.

Leon asking Sonia out in and of itself wasn't that great, but Carito's "Wait...what?" face after Sonia accepted utterly saved it. Since Carito's still a candidate for redemption, though...could Sonia be the spoiler for her and Leon? It'd be weird, but this is a Televisa novela we're talking about here.

And on a superficial note: while Luciana was running around all day in her Daisy Dukes and bustier under an open shirt, I couldn't help wondering if Irina Baeva did something to her face. She looked different than earlier in the show. Then again, Cesar looked decidedly less nebbish and more silver fox-y in this ep too...and Fernanda looked older than Carito and Perla, like Nina from Pasion y poder in reverse.

Since disposing of her virginity would lessen her appeal to El Coyote it would be a good idea to do this now. However, we can't be sure how long it will take for her to know he's in the vicinity. But, there is another concern which is the possibility that he will want revenge for her getting away from him earlier. I'm trying to remember whether she ever actually hit him or kicked him in the bazanzas when she was a kid...

Thank you, Urban.

I finally got to see Mark..Creepy dude. geez Louise..what did Soosan ever see in him? He's supposed to be the gringo?? With that terrible ENglish ? He and Juan looked as if they were terrified of EL COyote who liked !Ike he might eat them for breakfast.

I did not recognize El Coyote as one and the same who Marcos and LUCi ran from. I never thought about the possibility that JUan might have him kidnap her. If so, could wobbly personality Brian be redeemed by helping to rescue her?

DisGracie looks like a pretty, porcelain doll, but her eyes remind me of my daughter's Siberian husky...But gray instead of blue. I once read a novel that described that color eye as "the co!Or of spit." Ew. Now, I am going to google"goat eyes."

SO, do you think that Miguel and LUCI are going to San francisco? I don't. I think that the writers are saving LUci and her innocence for Dave . Ah..deflowering..The big prize. Dave, you may have already won the Publishers Clearing HOuse of virginity.

I think that Sonia's role is to make Carito jealous. I think that she will end up with Leon.

Tano....Comb you hair, dude...Or let it grow to your shoulders.... choose one.

I've grown weary of perpetual persecution and not looking forward to El Coyote stalking Luciana and Miguel and David elbowing each other out of the way to save her. Now, if our fair skin, fair eyed, college educated, worshiped hothead can infiltrate a sex trafficking ring to save the unfortunate, I'd vote Luciana for sheriff.

Question..DisGRacie said to Juan that be failed to "capture her sister." So..hmmm....Juan wanted LIsa, but Dave won her. Is that another reason for JUan trying to ruin Dave?.... Back to wrapping presents.

Lord knows she's got the wardrobe for it, tofie. OTOH, her being a hothead would make her a lousier choice for sheriff than Lieutenant Skunk...

UA: Not surprised Juan is aligning with El Coyote to send Luciana back to Mexico. Anyone else think there's a criminal syndicate going on ?

Bill: Why is Marta delaying the inevitable in regards to Luciana & Gutierrez meeting face-to-face ?

Kirby: I'm expecting Leon to be targeted by Juan, El Coyote & Mark.

The Body Count will likely increase again!

I don't know that Juan is thinking of that just yet. Based on earlier conversations it sounded like he's put the date on the calendar and is looking to pull the rug out from under Luciana at the last minute. That would not allow enough time for David to do anything or for Brian to redeem himself. He probably can't anyway now that he is a regular policeman rather than a border patrol officer.

Since we all agree that Juan is in over his head with El Coyote I predict that he will screw up somewhere in the near future and hand Luciana over to him as payment to forgive the transgression.

Since El Coyote (When is someone going to say his actual name?) can't do what he does alone, we know there is a syndicate. He has trafficked in underage girls before, so selling an adult female would appeal to him because it's probably a lesser risk in terms of what prison time he could get for it.

UA: Bold Prediction: Luciana will be sold into Sex Slavery, etc.,

Thanks, Urban. Excellent title. Like Susanlynn, I had to look up "goat eyes." Funny, never noticed that about goats' eyes before. They look just fine on the goats, but there is something a little creepy about Graciela's eyes. A sort of vacancy. (I think the actress is very pretty, but she's bringing more to this role than just her appearance.)

I am looking forward to Erika showing up. I'm getting so tired of this David-Luciana-Miguel stuff. Hopefully Erika will disrupt that in some way.

Oh and shame on Leon for using Sonia to make Carito jealous. He didn't like it when Carito used him that way. He shouldn't do that to Sonia, even if he thinks she's immune.

I didn't notice it until last night, but the opening credits now mention Erika the Hitherto Unseen as well in addition to Mark and Adolfo, Rival Wine Guy. Apparently she's being played by one Barbara Lopez, who last popped up in Un camino hacia un destino. (Didn't see it, so I have no idea if this is a good or bad thing.)

Julie: did Leon actually say he was trying to make Carito jealous at some point? CC3 from my local Uni feed was all wonked up, so I thought it was a legitimate followup from the wine launch event. If that's the case, though, it could be the setup for him and Sonia actually developing real nebbish feelings for each other and getting over their crushes on Carito and David together. That could work...

No, Leon didn't say that. It's just my assumption. Maybe I'm wrong and he's over Carito already.

Heh, I can't seem to say everything in one go lately. I meant to add that it wasn't just CC3 that was screwed up. CC1 was too slow to follow. Very frustrating.

Erika was Lucero in UCHUD

Bill, I am looking forward to seeing Erika. I really enjoyed the actress in Camino and hope she is playing a good hearted character here.

Diana

I'm still betting Erika will be Evil!

Before everyone disappears into Christmas I want to say that I really appreciate the writers on my team for this program. I think you are the reason we're getting more comments here than on the two other series that have better writers and what I think are better stories.

So gracias to: Delilah, Sonia, Cynthia, dy77, and Anita, whose wit and observations are bringing such lively discussions to this series.

Now, back to our normal discussion.

Julie: maybe Peter should be with Carito!

Steve, you may be right: Peter deserves a girl who has enthusiasm. And Carito would appreciate such an attentive young man.

I don't think we'll see that, though.

As one of the people who is about to disappear into Christmas myself (spending less time online after today), I'll also thank Urban, Delilah, Sonia, Cynthia, dy77, and Anita. Your witty and thoughtful recaps transform a telenovela that I consider somewhat mediocre into a fun watch-along experience.

Thanks so much for the great recap, Urban! As someone who only minimally watches this show, I can very much say that I'm only here for the recaps and comments. Great job!

I'll be disappearing to Christmas too here in San Antonio, TX.

However, I will be watching the show d
throughout next week.

Oh wow, UA you really nailed this one with those pictures of DisGracie so well. Oh my goodness, does she have a "soulless" predatory stare on her. It's so psychopathic. I looked at that and the song by Duran Duran came on in my brain, "Hungry like the Wolf".

Come to think of it, Lilian is predatory too. See how she is playing with her "prey", ie...Brian Gutierrez? It's a "like mother, like daughter" situation. I don't know which one is worse. Probably DisGracie is worse because we know she actually murdered Lisa. But I just have this funny feeling that Lillian murdered her husband too. That does remain to be seen and I hope they answer that question sometime.

I wanted to barf when I saw Lilian with Gutierrez and she told him "I'm your best option". He looks off the other way like he's only putting up with her because he needs her right now. I don't believe he really has feelings for her. I think that was gone a long time ago, but Lilian won't stop because of this competition she has going with Marta.

As for El Coyote and his human trafficking: This is one subject that really makes me angry. Young girls STOLEN, kidnapped from their homes and trafficked into sex slavery. These girls are beaten into submission and kept drugged all the time. I don't know how anyone can do that to other human beings, it's just so tragic. I met someone earlier this year who runs a non profit organization that tries to rescue these young girls and rehabilitate them, get them off drugs, educate and train them. The stories are just so tragic, my heart just breaks thinking about these situations.

It's also a tragedy to see people trafficked illegally from the Latin American countries and put into forced labor. I know that there have been sweat shops in Los Angeles that have been closed down because these people were literally slaves who had no choice as they were trafficked here illegally. It's a type of Mexican mafia in control of all this including the drugs and so forth. It's a very sad and tragic underworld that goes on right under our noses in the USA.

So seeing this stuff with Juan, Mark, and that Coyote really strikes a nerve in me. But the TN can resemble real life because these things do happen.

Admittedly human trafficing is at least as bad as we are all saying, actually worse. BUT..in our little fluff TN it has not been even alluded to. Only here on Caray Crazy.

I'd be surprised if the TN goes there. Thus far they are only talking about getting non citizens across the border to work in vineyards. It will be nice to have something with a bit more sustenance in it than Susie likes Roger, but Roger like Carol, but Sam wants to go out with Nickey.

Lillian doesn't have the obvious demon look that Gracie has, this is true. But I suspect that Gracie is more cold-blooded than Lillian. This will be very interesting when the two of them finally clash.

Brian is definitely putting up with Lillian as long as he thinks he has to. If he becomes sheriff he'll drop her like a hot burrito. But I doubt he'd be able to get his name removed from the Munoz deportation and that will really kick him in the pants.

Good recap UA. And she was facin satan. She Better not turn her back on her. She might wind up like her sister.(lisa)

I wish they'd write some smarts into the script for gabs character, I'm tired of seeing him super stupid to the people around him that he calls family. Bobby is the smartest one in the family. Poor kid, stuck with dumb
Adults. Ok gotta go, dinners ready. Yall stay warm.

Thanks URBAN!!

Thank you UA. Miss one episode to catch my Redskins and their horrid defense, miss a lot!

Nina: That would be crazy if they have Graciela whacking Luciana!

I'm betting Graciela kills either Marta or Leon.

Urban, I'd like to add my thanks to you and your team for all the great work that you do. I am among those who minimally keep up with this novela and, as such, rely on and appreciate the recapping team and commenters to keep up with how things are developing. Many thanks. Helen
