La Piloto #3 3-9-2017: With More Lives Than A Herd Of Cats

[My apologies, but I am living the recapper’s nightmare with only a poor quality video, bad audio, machine gun Spanish, and no CC’s. On Demand and Hulu+ are a bit behind.  But who’s complaining? –ed.]

(And this is just in the first ten minutes.....)

Viewerville is at the edge of their seats as Yolanda, John, and Zulima take an unexpected air born detour to the creek bed hundreds of feet below in the red bug. Dave/Arturo and Monica look on in horror.  Dave thinks on his feet and immediately grabs a rope; he then heads down the branch-filled  cliff side.  Suddenly there’s an explosion.  More horror as we learn Dave’s knocked cold—but only momentarily.  He heads back down and another policeman comes down with a fire extinguisher.  They see all have escaped into the deep-forested hillsides.

Dave, aka El Duro, gets his tracker on and determines there’s blood on the fallen tree trunks heading a certain direction, while at the same time, John tells Yoli and Zuli that the ranch is near and all they have to do is follow the river to the highway.

At the highway they commandeer some farmer’s truck full of hay.  The farmer puts hay over them and we see the lone truck with hay drive out of the trees.  Dave and Monica realize the group with John Lucio have gotten away from them.

The other stewardesses are watching T.V. later that morning in their respective domiciles and see the news about the desperate escape.  Suddenly they realize just who they helped onto the plane the night before.  Blondie is especially stunned, understanding she’s now an accomplice to drug lords escapades, literally.

Later that same morning someone is kidnapping the gals during their morning routines.

At Rancho de Narcos Lucios, Oscar wants to know who’s to blame for this major fuster-cluck.  Yoli, Zuli and Zeki (?) are on the carpet for 5 million bucks that have gone missing.  Yoli says it’s not their fault.  Oscar calls her a troublemaker and clicks his knife open threateningly.  She scolds, saying they’ve done all to save his brother’s life and all he can think of is money.  He comments that he hasn’t time for her attitude and walks outside.  He’s got a proposition.  The other stewardesses are tied up as captives in the truck.  Zeki’s told: it’s their lives for the 5 million bucks in the next 24 hrs.

Zuli races into John’s bedroom where he’s lying unconscious.  She tries waking him to ask him to save them.  But, his body-guard (Mauricio Aspes, who’s been missing from Uni these last few years) threatens her with his gun at the back of her head to “get out!!”

According to the news accounts, John and the two stewardesses are dead.  Dave explains to his boss that they gave this information to the press hoping to make the drug cartels lower their guard and to gain time till they can connect John Lucio to Centro American Air.  Monica adds that the way they brought Lucio back to Mexico (on the plane) is more than enough. The boss isn’t interested in the small fry like Zeki and Zuli.  He only wants John Lucio and the other cappos. Duro asks for more time to learn who of the stewardesses must be aiding them. He gives Duro some more time; they need results and quickly or it’s over.

Meanwhile, Oscar takes out his pistol and demands the women get down on their knees.  Yoli looks him straight in the eyes.  “--You’re going to kill us?  Well, then do it, but do it looking us in the face!”  One of his henchmen forces Yoli to her knees and Oscar’s about to shoot when John shows up and tells his brother to drop his pistol.  “—Lower your gun!  That’s an order!”  That night John and Oscar have a table of beauties at dinner to improve their view and their meal.

At headquarters, Moni and Duro fight over whether it’s Yoli or Zuli who’s aiding and abetting the cartel and John Lucio.  He insists it’s Yoli who’s the closes to him.  She’s the one who’s got to be watched.  He warns Moni never to question him and not to forget who she works for.

At dinner, John thanks the stewardesses for saving his life so magnificently.  He’s buying Zuli a car to replace the old one.  Yoli asks what they get.  He offers them all an association with his organization.  It’s a once in a lifetime deal and an offer they cannot/better not refuse.  “—Your lives will be set forever.  Think it over.”

Later that evening on their way back to their rooms, Zuli tries to apologize for the troubles she’s caused.  Yoli makes it plain she got her mixed up in drug trafficking and is not the friend she led her to believe.  Deloris, the lady in charge of the apartment complex, tells Yoli she noted that she hadn’t been back and isn’t she working at the club anymore?  Nope.  She got a job working for Centro American Air as a stewardess.  A nice change, so stop the gossip already!  Exhausted, she enters her dark bedroom and thinks back to how she got to this crossroads in life.  She remembers John’s words that she’ll make so much money nothing would be out of their reach that they’d want.  She still wants to pilot planes.  Her decision is made.

Anyway Blondie is reminded the next morning over coffee with the other stewardesses, it’s not something they can say no to, Blondie is no longer seen in the group.  The other three join Zuli and Zeki on the street as Zuli entices them by showing all her new car from John.  Yoli asks Zeki how the delivery and transport thing works.  He explains the ways they evade DEA detection and that they travel to various cities in Europe and South America.  Everyone from the mechanics, to the pilots and even the police are involved and take a cut to look the other way.  Nobody steals a single bill because Oscar will make them pay with their life.Blondie Bette tells the girls she simply refuses to take up with narcos; at the same time, John tells Oliver that all the gals are trustworthy except for Bette.  John and Oliver discuss their decision to get rid of Bette in cloaked terms, but Zeki realizes what they're hinting at and gets feisty with Oscar over killing decent people who simply don’t want to get involved.  John reminds him they’ll be the first to fall if she and others like her are made to talk.

Dave continues checking out Yoli and offers to buy her a meal.  Yoli can’t right now.  She races after Bette who enters a bus.  Yoli’s just missed it.  John drives up to the curb just then and tells her they still have things to discuss.  Like what?  Like the missing 5 million dollars she owes him.  She frowns and gets in the car.  Monica has lookouts and she puts out an APB on her and John.

John and Yoli stop somewhere off the highway in the mountains.  They talk about the debt and he flirts a bit.  She doesn’t care and will pay him back even though it will be years.  (I think.)  He offers another deal.  He’ll renounce the debt and never mention it again if they can be friends and she works for him and pays him what she can.   She agrees.  Then he wants to show her something.

John takes Yoli to his private plane and airport. He tells her he’s learned she wants to be a pilot and he’s willing to get her there.  “—In exchange for what?”

At the airline, Dave is checking something for Moni and gets interrupted by Zeki.  He has to leave.

John takes Yoli up in the plane and she melts.  She really has fun.  Her whole stone wall and stubborn attitude changes.

Zuli calls to complain to Zeki about something.  He ends up giving her the news that John’s put a hit out on Bette for that night.

Thanks so much, Jardinera! Even through technical difficulties, you delivered.

Lisbet didn't seem to understand that the offer the Lucio brothers gave her was not smuggle or don't smuggle. It was smuggle or don't live. Girl was naive! I do appreciate her moral standing though.

Meanwhile, Zuli, when given the opportunity to give Lisbet a heads up warning, shrugs her shoulders and goes back to her bubble bath. I'm glad Yoli now knows Zuli is no real friend. Even when she went running to wake John, I think it was more about saving her own life, than saving those innocent young women she just got into this mess.

Now we can see how Yolanda could fall for John-- their mutual love of planes and flying. Plus he is quite charming, when he wants to be. I find it interesting that John is a bad guy, but he has actually been 100% honest with Yolanda about who he is and what he does. While Dave/Arturo is a good guy, but everything about him is a lie. Even though Dave seems to be attracted to/likes Yolanda, he is trying to get closer to her mainly because he realizes she has some kind of special tie to John Lucio.

Oscar certainly doesn't like how Yolanda talks back, and that John lets her and seems to like her.

Alfredo- Nosy landlady Dolores definitely assumed Yoli had become a call girl, when she saw her in that dress (provided by the Lucios) and coming back so late after being missing for a day. And yes, what a day it was!

Thanks for chiming in. I will be getting this on On Demand if my tv doesn't crap out 10 times an hour. However, they only had episodios 1 and 2 up. Glad for the bilingual assist folks! I knew Zuli was talking herself up to Zeki in the end but the missing link was that she was being replaced by the other stewardesses. What does she expect when she puts in motion something that loses the boss 5 million smackers????? She's lucky he bought her the car and didn't hide a bomb in the transmission to go off the next time she turns the key!!

Terrific recap Jardinera and under terrible conditions! Just like Yolanda, you manage to get through and survive beautifully no matter what.

Boy, I wouldn't understand a thing without my Spanish closed captions. I notice they seem to use the slang word "pede" (fart) for "bronca" or disagreemtn. There were a lot of "pedes" last night without all the bickering back and forth.

I'm finding this quite a fun romp so far and I hope more of the previous 10 pm crowd join us soon. The cat and mouse games have been riveting and nothing too gruesome yet (although alas, the lovely Lizbeth's days are numbered.

Thank you Jar--A whale of a tale, told swimmingly. I consider these recaps my Caray Crib Sheets for Dummies who have never watched a narco tale, a necessary adjunct to watching. It certainly is fast-paced and action-packed. However, without your and Alfredo's wise guidance, I wouldn't know who is important enough to pay attention to. TOO MANY CHARACTERS (but the actors are probably grateful for the work--and maybe break into a major role, next time). (P.S. After laughing at him in PyP, Alejandro Nones is perfect for this role, he wears it well.)

Where on earth is this going to go? We know the DEA has to bring down this second-rate cartel, but how? How are Yola and AlberDave going to get together in the end?

Vivi, if you hadn't pointed it out, I would never have reflected on the contradictory personalities of the two men, one "good" and one "bad" who are going to be in Yola's life.

Jardinera--I think this is only episode #3. Didn't it start on Tuesday? Wednesday would have been #2 and Thursday, last night would be #3. I'll wait until later on today to see if you change it. If not, I can do it.

Thanks, Jardinera. I thought I left a comment but now I don't see it, so here I go again. I got lost in the plot last night, but your recap showed me the way.

That is (was) an incredible little red Beetle leading police on a high-speed chase.

Nice scene of Yoli coming home after all that happened, looking in the mirror and being startled by her ownself all tarted up.

John and Oscar are an interesting brother team of opposites. Wondering if other members of the family will appear.

My apologies to Alfredo who was supposed to write the recap.

Splendid job Jardineria in spite of the obstacles. As I've said before I love the fire in Yoli's belly. When she refused to kneel and said 'if you're going to kill us look us in the face' I was like 'whoa - she's fearless'. Oscar hates subordination especially if it's from a woman - you are spot on Vivi that he does not like Yoli's spunk. I can't stand him here and couldn't stand him in Pasion y Poder but that's a testament to his acting skills. Lizbeth better get with the program or get the hell out of that town. Niece agree that the dynamics between these two brothers is quite interesting. Although we know John can kill you if need be he's more in control of his emotions where Oscar will shoot first and deal with the consequences later. John at least thinks things thru first. This novela is going to be a hell of a ride

I only watched last nights epi. Why is yoli being held accountable for the money...she was not part of the ring and got tricked. Wouldn the cartel know this. Has she not explained this.

Anon 7:47- Bottom line is, they don't care. Someone has to take the blame. Actually, at first they thought she was lying and stole the money. Oscar especially believed this, which is why he demanded the money back in 24 hours initially. He was perfectly fine with killing Yoli (and the others) and being done with it. The entire crew basically paid back the debt by becoming a team of mules. At this point, John's just using the repayment as an excuse to spend more time with Yoli and bring her more closely into his underworld life.

Yep, just like Alfredo said. Narcos/cartel leaders are not known for their sympathy and understanding natures. $5 million was lost under her watch. End of story.
