La Piloto #57 5.24.17: In Which Yolanda Steals a Baby...
• The Senator is pissed and with good reason: John has been officially detained and will be extradited to the US by the DEA, Oscar has done nothing thus far to rescue John from prison and he cannot locate his fellow Sombra partners with the exception of the Governor. Vergara tries to make excuses for them but the Senator is tired of excuses and will fix everything when he’s President. For now, he wants Vergara to cal Montgomery and ensure John doesn’t say anything to the DEA.
• The girls watch the press conference in the hospital as Zulima looks on. A hospital employee comes and asks for family members of Amanda. Yolanda tells her that she didn’t have any one but them and the employee asks them to come with her.
• Fajarado meets Raul and Monica. They hand over Montgomery’s cell phone and Fajarado nods as he looks over the evidence.
• Santamaria and Rubio arrive at Cielito Lindo and decide to ditch the ambulance there; they notice how close the bar is to AeroTours.
• Benavides reads John his long list of crimes as Montgomery and Garrido look on. Bautista comes, announces that he is John’s lawyer, and explains that John’s detention is illegal because Garrido denied his arrest in Villa Antigua and gave him false information. He demands John be released.
• The hospital employee explains that the girls’ claim to Amanda’s body has been approved since they proved she has no other family members. She then asks them who will cover the hospital costs because the body won’t be released without payment. The girls see that the bill is huge, but agree to pay it, however, they can’t release the baby to them because he has a father. Olivia reminds her that the father is in jail.
• Camiengo advises Arley to be calm and keep his head down but Arley needs to find a way to make money and organize his “troops” before the Lucios try to kill him again. Camiengo reminds him that he needs a lot of money but, just then, Arley hears on a nearby TV that John has been captured and will be sent to a maximum-security prison. Arley is ecstatic and thanks Amanda for the good news; he hopes El Cartel de las Sombras order his murder.
• Yolanda reiterates that she and the girls are Amanda’s only family, therefore, the hospital should release the baby to them. The employee reminds them that if the parents can’t care for the child, and they didn’t leave instructions on who should, then the child would go to an orphanage. The girls protest but the employee suggests they ask for the child’s custody from the father before making a call to social services. The girls storm out as the employee reminds them to pay their bill.
• Montgomery is shocked to hear Garrido lied to Bautista but Garrido explains that it was a matter of security, as the police station was attacked. Further, he, Dave and Monica decided to keep quiet as to avoid further complications. Bautista continues to demand John’s release but Benavides demands Bautista sue them if is unhappy because he can hold John for 48 hours. Garrido takes not John to his cell but not before John reveals that Monica helped the Lucios escape AeroTours 5 months ago.
• The girls discuss the Amanda and baby situation. They need the money from Cielito Lindo, especially to give Amanda a decent burial and take care of the baby. Lizbeth reminds them that Raul may have already told the police, who will go and retrieve the money, so they agree to go ASAP but first, they need to find a way to get the baby out of the hospital.
• Santamaria and Rubio look around the outside of the bar, realize it’s been a while since anyone has been there, and go inside.
• Fajardo confirms that they have the proof they need to arrest Montgomery, who overhears them and runs to the bathroom, but their happiness is short lived as Benavides comes with Garrido and arrests Monica for helping the Lucios escape AeroTours. Garrido is surprised to see Raul there.
• In the bathroom, Montgomery hides in one of the stalls as Fajardo comes to look for him, gun drawn. Fajardo finds him and informs him that he is under arrest, per the DEA director’s orders. Montgomery surrenders but punches Fajardo, who is distracted with the handcuffs, and runs off. Fajardo orders him to surrender.
• Dave and Wilmer wait for Monica and Raul in the parking garage as Fajardo comes running and announces that Montgomery has escaped. Dave orders him into the car so they can find Montgomery ASAP.
• Montgomery runs through another side of the parking garage, undetected.
• Benavides explains that John confessed that she helped him escape AeroTours. Monica doesn’t deny it but confesses that the Lucios kidnapped her sister, to force her to cooperate, and then killed her anyway. She cries and tells him that she’s alone in the world because of them.
• Fajarado tells Dave and Wilmer what happened and confirms that he still has the phone. They look around the nearby streets to no avail. Fajardo calls the DEA Director and reports Montgomery as a fugitive as Dave instructs Wilmer to drive back to the police station for Monica and Raul. Fajardo then confesses that Monica has been arrested.
• Benavides laments what happened but she was still helped known criminals so she should get a lawyer, pronto. She doesn’t know any, because she’s not a criminal, so Benavides explains that she will be assigned a public defender and will remain in his custody while they process her case.
• Raul and Garrido talk about the Monica situation. Raul doesn’t think she would’ve helped them but Garrido reminds him that they had the Lucios surrounded but they mysteriously escaped. Raul thinks there is another reason behind it because Monica hates the Lucios and Garrido agrees. Raul hopes everything is resolved soon; Garrido nods and tells him that he and Monica deserve a medal for their work. Raul hopes to get back to work soon, and continue to catch the bad guys, but Garrido reveals that he was laid off as of yesterday. Raul shakes his head, distraught.
• Santamaria hates the fact that he has been unable to find Yolanda, especially after all him and Rubio have been through, but Rubio reminds him that Yolanda is a criminal and she knows how to hide well. Santamaria demands he shut up and vows to find Yolanda, no matter what, and with his help. He then orders Rubio to look for any money, drugs or guns ASAP. He obliges.
• Lizbeth talks to a nurse and then informs Olivia and Yolanda that Social Services are on their way. Yolanda proposes they do whatever they need to do to liquidate the hospital bill and then take care of Amanda’s baby. Lizbeth doesn’t want any more trouble but ultimately deices that she would do anything for them and the baby. They ask Yolanda if she has a plan and Yolanda nods.
• Outside the station, Raul informs Dave, Wilmer and Fajardo about Monica’s situation and his sudden unemployment. Dave goes with Fajardo to talk to Benavides, as he is only being investigated, as Wilmer takes Raul back to the car.
• Oscar, pissed as all hell, arrives at Lucio headquarters and goes inside, after a small shuffle with the Senator’s men, who tried to impede his entrance.
• Vergara calls Montgomery to no avail and then informs the Senator that Moncada is investigating as well. The Senator thought the Lucios were invincible but he was wrong; Vergara explains that an ex-girlfriend betrayed John and the Senator laughs at the fact that she was smarter than John and Oscar. Just then, Oscar arrives, gun drawn, and blames Vergara for John’s imprisonment. Vergara reminds him that because of John they may all be in trouble and Oscar lowers the gun before going up to his room.
• Rubio and Santamaria search around Cielito Lindo for any contraband. Rubio notices a small space behind one of the bookcases on the wall and Santamaria pulls it back. They find a safe in the wall.
• Dave demands to speak to Benavides, ASAP, but he is still busy. Fajardo suggests he calm down because he’s not helping the situation. Dave nods, frustrated, and Fajardo informs him that he is no longer being investigated by the DEA. Fajardo then relies that there is an APB out on Montgomery and they will find him soon. Dave hopes so and Fajardo congratulates him on a job well done.
• The girls formulate a plan to bust out Amanda’s kid. Lizbeth will distract any one who gets close as Olivia watches the hallway. Yolanda goes inside the nursery, grabs the baby and goes down the hallway and to the elevators. As two more guards approach the nursery, Lizbeth distracts them and Yolanda manages to ride the elevator down to the first floor. She avoids several doctors and nurses and makes her way down to the parking garage and onto the street. Lizbeth and Olivia are waiting with a taxi and they race off as Zulima runs outside, missing them by a few seconds. She curses her luck as she runs off.
• Monica, now with an assigned public defender, is grilled by Benavides, who records the whole session. He relates he story to her and Monica admits that she helped the Lucios escape, much to Garrido’s chagrin.
• Dave and Fajardo wait for an answer on Monica. Fajardo wonders if Monica did help them but Dave prefers to not talk about it. Just then, Fajardo receives a text from the Director, who wants him to occupy Montgomery’s office in the Federal Police station. Fajardo wants Dave to come with but Dave prefers to stay until he gets some news on Monica.
• Monica relays her whole story for the camera from the start of the AeroTours operation to it’s sad and tragic end as Benavides, Garrido and the public defender listen intently. She cries and laments that she betrayed everyone but her sister died anyway. Garrido announces that he believes and understands her actions but only Benavides can decide her fate. Benavides understands as well but he must keep her detained as they investigate. He does ask if Dave knew about her involvement in the Lucio’s escape but Monica is quiet.
• Montgomery arrives at Lucio headquarters, asks if Oscar is inside, and then makes his way inside as well.
• Dave stops Benavides in the hallway and inquires about Monica. Montgomery demands to know who he is as Monica comes and confesses what she did at AeroTours. Dave begs her to not do this but Monica reiterates that he must stop Oscar, Montgomery and El Cartel de las Sombras. They then take Monica away as Dave asks her to be strong.
• Montgomery, with a drink in hand, tells the Senator, Vergara and Oscar that his cover is blown. Oscar wonders how he got as far as he did, because he’s an idiot, but the Senator explains that Dave stole his cell phone. Oscar berates him again and Montgomery stands up to fight as Oscar takes out his gun. Vergara does too, points it at Oscar, and asks him to calm down. Oscar obliges and Vergara tells him that Montgomery will stay at Lucio headquarters while they figure out a way out of the mess they’re in.
• Estela and Rosalba watch the news and find out about John. Rosalba is happy, because Yolanda will be safe, but Estela thinks Oscar, who is way worse, may pose the bigger threat. Rosalba chides her for her constant negative energy but Estela shrugs. Rosalba goes to call Yolanda as the doorbell rings. Rosalba goes to answer and finds three women and a baby on her doorstep. She and Estela are shocked.
• Wilmer and Raul search for the girls to no avail. They overhear the hospital employee chiding the guards for allowing a child to disappear and race out of there.
• Rosalba knows Yolanda had to do with john’s capture but she proposes she tell her the whole story later. She then asks how they will take care of the baby but none of them know; they just knew they couldn’t let the baby go to an orphanage. Rosalba understands but Estela reminds them that they stole a baby and will likely be in trouble. Yolanda chides her for her negative energy as well but Estela reminds her that she’s a criminal and are not suited to take care of a baby, especially a premature on. The girls are quiet.
• Raul and Wilmer assume the girls stole the baby as they are nowhere to be found and leave the hospital before a security guard can interrogate them.

• In Montgomery’s office, Dave looks around as Fajardo talks on the phone. When he hangs up, he tells Dave that the Director wants him reinstated in the DEA ASAP. What’s more, he wants Dave to take over Montgomery’s position in Mexico, especially because he found proof Montgomery was dirty and aided in John Lucio’s capture. They also proved that he killed Simpson in self-defense, much to Dave’s surprise. Fajardo thinks he should accept the position but Dave is quiet…

Anyway, yeah... Piloto is kicking it's ass. From what I've SEEN... it DOES appear to be a variation on the Telemundo theme (something which, I think, doesn't even rate commenting on. Forgive me for soap-boxing, but it's like they were thinking "Yeah! 'La reina del sur'!! It was a hit!! Uh... what other drug dealing kingpins can we come up with???" For the same reason Hollywood can come up with 'Final Destination 12'- what, because there were so many unanswered questions from the first 11??? To me, it's a dumbing down of the medium of television entertainment, and that's a verrrrrry slippery slope that, once taken, the jaded cynic in me really feels it is impossible to get out of. But, it SEEMS like La Piloto is a bit different than this... but you guys would, of course, know more about this than I would, and I really would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this matter!! PLEASE!!!
FWIW- though (alas) back in Canada (until I can figure a way back out again!), I get a lot of my information on shit 'down Mexico way' from a close friend of mine who is high up in programming at Televisa (no, when I mentioned the Robert Duvall 'Network' thing early I was NOT thinking of her as the evil Faye Dunaway 'Diana Christensen' from the same film), the network is apparently buoyed by the response it's had, even though it really DOES seem like it's main goal seems to be- NOT in producing top-quality shows- but mainly in crushing it's competition Azteca into the dust like bugs). This is unquestionably a BIG thing for Livia Brito's career, however, and it's interesting to see the presence of Maria Fernanda Yepes here in the villainous role of Zulima. Can I ask you guys... how is she doing??? She made her mark as being the FIRST 'Yesica, la diabla' in 'Sin senos no hay paraiso' (which has since been made by Telemundo into a sequel which was smashingly successful, and of course with that network (and, nauseatingly to me- see my 'Final Destination 12' reference above...) is now in the work for a third season completely WASTING the villainous capabilities of Catherine Siachoque (the best telenovela villain- male or female- of all, I think... here she has the role of the protagonists mother). She then starred into the smashingly successful telenovela 'Rosario Tijeres'. I am curious as to her role, and your thoughts on it here.
I WILL mention one thing, however... one thing I find REEEEEE-ally ominous. Both Univision AND Televisa are marketing 'La Piloto' as : a "Crime Drama Television Series Based on Real Life Events". And I have it on good authority that Univision has gone to great lengths to ensuring that all medium (including WIKIPEDIA!!!) refer to it as that! WTF????
So, basically, I'm thinking..... don't expect conclusion, especially if it's a hit (which it appears to be). It's ALSO produced NOT by a person, but by something called 'W Studios'. WHO THE F**K is that???? All of this causes knots in my stomach and for my soul to weep a little bit at what I feel is the Hollywood-ization of an intrinsically Mexican medium that became global, but had heretofore not been infected by North American-ism.
Well, I guess I can look on the bright side... if this IS happening, maybe Juan Osorio and his dancing spawn will soon be out of jobs (oof... you should hear about his next one, a 'comedy with touches of drama' (FYI- that's what he said about 'Sueno de amor') starring Daniel Arenas, Zuria Vega, the singer Yahir, the wax figure of Silvia Pinal (as, undoubtedly, a caring grandmother- Carmen Salinas must be pissed), and his son Emilio in a more prominent role. Kill me now.)

Thanks Alfredo. Of course we have to have a Zooli sighting. She is like the 800 pound Gorilla in the room. She is invisible to the other cast, but in full view to us. I loved how she ran out to the street as the three Neonatal Nurses spirited the 2 month preemie away in a taxi.

I was relieved to see DEA Dave get a reprieve and offer of Montgomery's job. He should take it and turn right around and use his new power to help Moni. The 'Senator' and company are telling Montg they have to sneak him back to the US. I bet that is codespeak for a bullet to the head and a ditch in the jungle. I was impressed with how quickly Vergara was able to get his gun out and aimed on Oscar's head. And once again, with not one reason not to, someone does not pull the trigger.

Thanks Alfredo. Of course we have to have a Zooli sighting. She is like the 800 pound Gorilla in the room. She is invisible to the other cast, but in full view to us. I loved how she ran out to the street as the three Neonatal Nurses spirited the 2 month preemie away in a taxi.

Well at least this one I got to see. Spiriting out a two-month preemie is not a good idea. I have to agree with the detestable Yolanda mama (Esperanza?) on that one. And found the Montgomery escape pretty hard to believe. He looks like he couldn't land a punch on a kindergarten teacher, much less disable a trained police officer and manage to escape. But hey, keeps the series going.
Like Benavides. Not just because he's a straight shooter and good guy, but the man really ENUNCIATES. Him I can understand loud and clear without subtitles.

Actually I agree with Yoli's mother, Estela (?). Even is the baby survives, how are they going to take care of her, explain to her where she comes from, register her for school, etc. etc ... and how about the money.

You know (strangely, perhaps) since I'm here I'm able to get your Univision broadcasts (which are, of course, banned in (apparently, according to Univision, Canada), now that I've started with this one, I'd really like to talk with you guys for a minute about it!
This one has just NOW started airing down Mexico way, AFTER LDVDEC (which just ended, about which I will not say anything other than... 'meh...' (it doesn't continue until February 2018, and the same cast HAS been confirmed, so take that for what you will...), we are only a few capitulos in but (me not caring a flying f**k about spoilers) I was determined to capitalize on the fact that I COULD actually reach the forbidden fruit for once and reach you guys (usually, I must be separated from the gangs on the patios because I have to watch them as they come out, Mexico way). As such, YES, Alfredo, AWESOME job here on serving refreshments, entertainment, etc. on this little patio, and Jardinera thank you too for being such an expert hostess as well. Kirby, Niecie, JudyB, Carvivile, Steve, Lynette, Nett, Sandydoc, and anybody else who I've missed, I've greatly enjoyed your contributions on making this one happenin'.
For whatever it's worth, this one is doing super in the ratings in it's first week. It's tripled the ratings that Azteca's biggest project to date- a refrito of it's first BIG BIG BIG TITTED hit (anybody remember Robert Duvall from the movie 'Network'??), 'Nada Personal', which was a totally AWESOME telenovela based (sort-of) on real-life events, that was the very FIRST Mexican telenovela to address even the POSSIBILITY of corruption in Mexican politics as, before it, while known to EVERYBODY it was something that was never addressed, just taken for granted, let ALONE being shown on national television for the evil thing that it is!) This was also the very first Azteca production that showed its fangs to Telemundo, and presented itself as the viable competitor to Televisa that it really IS (it is only because of Televisa's relationship with Univision that it's novelas have the predominance that they do, something which- alas, prevents you guys up Northern way from knowing most of the work of Edith Gonzalez since 2010, the joys of Regina Torne's villainy (she was the evil mother in the movie 'Like Water for Chocolate') and, basically, the work of a whole s**tload of actors who even on these pages when they're in a telenovela up here we comment "where did THEY come from???". Anyway, it was 'Nada Personal' that was the first production that had Televisa biting it's nails and aware of the competition lying within. The remake stars Juan Soler in the stupendously villainous role (played by one of the most magnificent Mexican actors of the past 40 years, Rogelio Guerra, in the original), and protagonized by Margarita Munoz on the lady side (ANOTHER Colombian?? Anyway, yeah... Piloto is kicking it's ass. From what I've SEEN... it DOES appear to be a variation on the Telemundo theme (something which, I think, doesn't even rate commenting on. Forgive me for soap-boxing, but it's like they were thinking "Yeah! 'La reina del sur'!! It was a hit!! Uh... what other drug dealing kingpins can we come up with???" For the same reason Hollywood can come up with 'Final Destination 12'- what, because there were so many unanswered questions from the first 11??? To me, it's a dumbing down of the medium of television entertainment, and that's a verrrrrry slippery slope that, once taken, the jaded cynic in me really feels it is impossible to get out of. But, it SEEMS like La Piloto is a bit different than this... but you guys would, of course, know more about this than I would, and I really would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this matter!! PLEASE!!!
FWIW- though (alas) back in Canada (until I can figure a way back out again!), I get a lot of my information on shit 'down Mexico way' from a close friend of mine who is high up in programming at Televisa (no, when I mentioned the Robert Duvall 'Network' thing early I was NOT thinking of her as the evil Faye Dunaway 'Diana Christensen' from the same film), the network is apparently buoyed by the response it's had, even though it really DOES seem like it's main goal seems to be- NOT in producing top-quality shows- but mainly in crushing it's competition Azteca into the dust like bugs). This is unquestionably a BIG thing for Livia Brito's career, however, and it's interesting to see the presence of Maria Fernanda Yepes here in the villainous role of Zulima. Can I ask you guys... how is she doing??? She made her mark as being the FIRST 'Yesica, la diabla' in 'Sin senos no hay paraiso' (which has since been made by Telemundo into a sequel which was smashingly successful, and of course with that network (and, nauseatingly to me- see my 'Final Destination 12' reference above...) is now in the work for a third season completely WASTING the villainous capabilities of Catherine Siachoque (the best telenovela villain- male or female- of all, I think... here she has the role of the protagonists mother). She then starred into the smashingly successful telenovela 'Rosario Tijeres'. I am curious as to her role, and your thoughts on it here.
I WILL mention one thing, however... one thing I find REEEEEE-ally ominous. Both Univision AND Televisa are marketing 'La Piloto' as : a "Crime Drama Television Series Based on Real Life Events". And I have it on good authority that Univision has gone to great lengths to ensuring that all medium (including WIKIPEDIA!!!) refer to it as that! WTF????
So, basically, I'm thinking..... don't expect conclusion, especially if it's a hit (which it appears to be). It's ALSO produced NOT by a person, but by something called 'W Studios'. WHO THE F**K is that???? All of this causes knots in my stomach and for my soul to weep a little bit at what I feel is the Hollywood-ization of an intrinsically Mexican medium that became global, but had heretofore not been infected by North American-ism.
Well, I guess I can look on the bright side... if this IS happening, maybe Juan Osorio and his dancing spawn will soon be out of jobs (oof... you should hear about his next one, a 'comedy with touches of drama' (FYI- that's what he said about 'Sueno de amor') starring Daniel Arenas, Zuria Vega, the singer Yahir, the wax figure of Silvia Pinal (as, undoubtedly, a caring grandmother- Carmen Salinas must be pissed), and his son Emilio in a more prominent role. Kill me now.)

I wanted to ask you guys... would you all be interested if, like Urban's wonderful 'Toxic Mothers' and 'Weekend Discussion' posts, I were to do something along those lines about roles, stories, etc. that have been considered 'groundbreaking' GLOBALLY in telenovelas? I'm not talking about going back to when Libertad Lamarque played such-and-such in this telenovela in 1958... just about really COOL things in this genre that the people that read this blog- to whom, mostly, this is a NEW thing, I think would like to know! Epic roles (there ARE some other than 'Catalina Creel', awesome though she may be...), internationally acclaimed, or just plain interesting (one of my ideas was to take a "telenovela demise"- the one I had in mind was, of course, the worst of all- being buried alive, and to talk about it, and how it's been used).
What do you guys think??

Wow! Stevey, you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the telenovela genre! your comment is incredible. I enjoy reading Spanish, but I have difficulty with the spoken word, so I understand little of what is said in this narconovela, especially since I think a lot of the actors speak a coastal form of Spanish. I've been watching Chapo too on Sunday evenings and he and John seem somewhat similar, Chapo seeming a little nicer. The theme music for the 2 shows is, to me anyway, similar as well. I wish I were more proficient in Spanish. Thank God for caraycaray!!

This hospital is either super easy to get out of or super hard to navigate, depending on the character. Yolanda gets detected three time in a small hallway but Zulima cleans the same piece of floor tile for three episodes but no one notices.
I think this is still the same day or at least the next day since John's arrest so Zulima has only been penniless for one day but a murdering snake for much longer.

Hopefully, Dave can make a difference even if Monica is otherwise detained now.
