Caer en Tentación #15, 11/6/17 Lunes: Suspicion

Chapter 15: Suspicion

With apologies for the abbreviated version; there were some playback issues and I didn't want to keep you waiting.

Raquel impatiently demanded that Damián tell her where he was and indicated her suspicion that he and Andres were in cahoots about something.
You said he was going somewhere and he is here,” she said.
Let me talk to him,” Damián said to her.
Yes. You will be on speaker phone,” she said.

Cousin, you said yourself you'd be coming to meet with the new clients and of course we will still make a profitable deal,” Damián said.
That's great, cousin,” Andres said. He looked slightly uneasy, which he covered up by looking at the phone. “Damián, don't worry about it. I've given apologies to Raquel. Be calm.”
Raquel, I want to talk to you. Take that off speaker, please.” She complied.
What do you want?” she asked, as unemotionally as she could.
You see, it was a misundertanding. Stop the suspicion; all is well.”
No, Damián, all is not well.”
Raquel, I don't like it when you get like this.”
I'm sorry if I'm not reacting the way you want me to. I'm sorry.” She ended the call before she could lose her composure.
Raquel –” Andres began.
No. This is not alright. Explain to me why you didn't take that trip.”

Santiago and his employees were at his place tried talking about the incident with Andres. Santiago was sure that if Damián had changed his mind he would have called him, especially about a Sunday job. Nobody had any idea why this would have happened.

Damián told Carolina to calm down about the situation, as Andres had covered for them. She was not convinced that all was well, knowing that this was arousing suspicion in Raquel and possibly others, including her children. Damián told her he could manage Raquel, but Carolina was not convinced. She asked how many times he had deceived Raquel. It bothered her that he was so calm in the face of her bundle of nerves.
This is the first time I have ever deceived my husband,” she finally said.
Neither have I ever deceived Raquel,” he said.
Don't lie to me,” Carolina said, unconvinced.
I'm not lying,” he said. “You are the only woman I have ever done this with since I married Raquel.”
Then I don't understand. How can you be so calm, as though you're not afraid that –”
I'm not calm,” he said. “I'm just not panicking. Look, nobody has to discover this. Nobody has to know about our trip –”
You think? Because we both went out of town. What a coincidence, isn't it?” She was almost shouting. “If Santiago found out I don't know what I have to do.”
Santiago trusts you, doesn't he?”
He trusts you, too. I told him lies to be here with you. You know what I am? I'm a slut. That's what I've become. A slut, Damián.” She tried to walk away, but he prevented her. “Damián, you don't understand. I left my daughter at the worst time. With those jerks and that damned cousin of yours.”
Don't worry about my cousin –”
And Andres knows all about this and I'm not doing anything. I left all that to shack up with you. Don't you get what wrong I'm doing? I want to leave here. Let's go, please.”
She went back inside. He followed her. While he needed only a few minutes to dissuade her from leaving then and there he did not give a thought to what Andres was up to.

Andres apologized to Raquel, then told her that he and Damián had an argument about the Àlvarados. He claimed that Santiago and his men did not have security clearance at the office when they had arrived there. Raquel did not seem convinced and accusd him of workin against Damián. Andres – in his usual reptilian way – told her he was concerned for her. She didn't fall for it.
Enough. Santiago and Carolina are our friends. You are to treat them as such.”
Andres laughed briefly, finally saying that they were using her.

Nacho told Santiago that he should not have allowed Carolina to go to her brother's home, even with her sister-in-law. He reminded Santiago about what kind of person Vicente was. As usual, Santiago almost lost his temper but then realized that Nacho was right. He had felt at a loss as to what to do about the situation. Augustin commented that Nacho had a good instinct for these things. None gave a thought to Nicolás, who was sitting in the next room and heard every word.

Federico went out into the parlor as Andres left. He noticed that his mother was ill at ease but could not persuade her to talk about it. He pressed further, saying that he heard an argument and some very strong words. Finally he asked “Is Dad cheating on you?”

Godoy, Antonio, and the forensic expert examined the video from the toll booth camera and noticed Carolina's reaction to something she saw in the black car that pulled up in another lane. They speculated on whether that car had anything to do with the “accident.” Godoy was convinced of this based on Carolina's facial expression. Antonio then said they needed to find the car's owner. He talked about how someone had to know about the relationship and they needed to reconstruct it. There was no other way, as Carolina was dead and Damián in a coma. Another member of the squad arrived to tell Godoy that they were ready; he and Antonio left with him.

Laura and her cameraman were outside a building along with several police cars. She recorded the story for the evening news, telling the scandal-hungry public that a young woman of twenty-one was found dead inside. With no thought for the feelings of the deceased's family or friends, she identified her as Patricia Vargas and saying that this was related to the Becker case because she was a friend of Carolina's daughter, and that while the cause of death was officially unknown the police were thinking it was suicide. She looked almost gleeful at delivering this news, finishing by telling the public in a more appropriate manner that “We will keep you informed.”
Her cameraman pointed out that she had forgotten to mention the deceased's possible connexion to prostitution. Laura replied that she deliberately omitted this as a strategy. They speculated on whether Lola knew about her mother's infidelity.

Cinthia met with the cop who was selling information. They had had a previous liason and he asked what brought her back and whether she was on drugs again. She told him that nothing had been going well for her in Buenos Aires and she came back to help her sister. She further said she was not on drugs, but her fidgeting made him skeptical. She told him she needed money, which almost made him salivate. However, she took out a man's gold watch and asked for a loan with it as collateral. She admitted that it was an original and it was Damián's. He commented on how this was not the first time she had stolen anything. He took out a thick envelope of cash and handed her some, undoubtedly far less than the value of the watch. He invited her to have a drink with him then recinded the offer in a sarcastic jest that “Now you are clean for your sister” as though he knew that would not last.

Vicente pulled up in front of the cabana in his truck. He told Santiago he had been told that Carolina had purchased it and began to provoke a fight with him, accusing him of being gutless. Since Carolina had sold their parents' house which put Vicente out into the street he felt he was entitled to this. Raquel got between them and demanded that Vicente tell her how long he knew about the cabana. Not only did he not answer, he got back into his truck and drove off.

Santiago thought back to a time when he was making love to Carolina and she was a million miles away in her mind. She told him that she was thinking about her family and how difficult it was to live with her sister. He begged her not to start with this. She accused him of being bored but he said that was not it; it was that “Every time you think of this you feel bad.” She said that this did not make her a good wife and he told her she was. With an ironic expression he followed Raquel back into the cabana.

Damián lay on his hospital bed, machines counting off pulse beats and breathing as Miriam and Rueda looked in through the window in the door. She asked him whether he had heard from the cop he was paying. He told her that she was not to worry. “You will be the first to know who is responsible for your son's accident.”
And is there any other bank account I can take away from Raquel?”
Your daughter-in-law has no access to capital.”
Miriam made an expression of satisfaction. A pointed black hat and a broom would not have been necessary to make her look any more like a witch.

Raquel had had enough, standing in the cabana that had been the illicit love nest of her husband and another woman. She was feeling their presence in it and it was choking her. She told Santiago they should leave. He tried to get her to calm down, but she screamed out that she had to get out of there. He embraced her and she seemed to calm down for a moment. They kissed, then she pushed herself away as the tears began.
I can't. I can't. I am dying to make love with you but this would only be revenge and we are not like them.”
I know we're not.”
Then you don't deserve this.” She walked outside and allowed herself to cry.

Juan pulled up in his car and reminded Lola she was not to say a word of what had happened. For emphasis he touched the area above her left eyebrow where she had concealed the bruise with cosmetics. She started to get out when he pulled her back and passive/aggressively demanded a kiss. Reluctantly she moved a little closer but he grabbed her head and forced a kiss on her. She pushed away and got out of the car, slamming the door. As she opened the gate Laura came out of hiding to watch.
As Lola entered the house Nicolás asked where she had been; he had left messages for her all afternoon. She told him to leave her alone and went upstairs.

The police searched again by the river. One of them found a shovel with bloodstains on it. Antonio speculated that this had been brought by Carolina's killer. Godoy's cell phone rang and it was Laura telling him about Lola's connexion to the dead girl and her news coverage. She thought that the possible suicide was an important case. All this did was irritate him but he didn't forget to tell his men to secure the area.

Raquel and Santiago were sitting in a coffee shop and she apologized to him over losing her cool earlier that day. She did not feel right about the direction things had been going because she was not free to pursue her feelings. Damián was alive and it was not right. He agreed, but was obviously reluctant. Nothing had happened and it was better this way.

Laura went to the Àlvarados' door and told Nicolás she needed to talk to his sister. He didn't want to let her in, but she told him it was about the suicide of a friend of hers. He thought back to three years previously when Patricia had come to the door to see Lola about a party they were invited to. Nico began flirting with her and she flirted back, finally giving him her phone number. [My playback was particularly bad on the audio for this one. Deets, please; anyone.]

Damián had a very unpleasant conversation with Andres over the phone. When Damián tried to tell Andres off about how he had treated Santiago and Carolina Andres argued that “I am not your employee” and demanded to be consulted on allowing “these people” into the office. Damián asked whether he would be willing to talk to Santiago about Lola and Andres counter-threatened him with blowing the whistle on the affair. Damián brought up the business and its issues and demanded Andres tell him what he had told Raquel.

Lola and Juan talked about attending a party together. He was looking to begin a relationship with her and she seemed eager to do this except for the reaction she was predicting from her parents. They agreed to meet later and kissed.

Damián entered the house quietly, looking around. He put his keys on the table and Raquel entered the room. He started to talk, but Raquel was not prepared to hear any explanations. Damián said “The only thing I wanted to tell you is that I love you.” She didn't answer about that but clearly was beginning not to believe this.
Federico went upstairs to Mia's room and they briefly talked about their parents. Mia was not unaware of the unease between them and asked Fede if he suspected infidelity. He said he did, but she was more concerned with the revenge she intended to get on Joaquin for what he had done to her. He had posted the photo taken in his father's car on Facebook as part of a competition he was having with his friends. She wanted Fede to help her.

Carolina talked with her sister-in-law over coffee. Lisa asked whether Carolina was separating from Santiago. Carolina told her that they had only had an argument. A car horn started outside and the two women saw Vicente pull up in his grey car. Lisa saw that he was very drunk and knew that in combination with his temper this was a dangerous thing. Carolina told her to stay inside and she would handle her brother. He demanded to see his son, called his wife a slut, and accused Carolina of taking Lisa's side against him, her own brother. He twisted her arm and made a death threat before announcing he was not leaving until he got his son. Somehow Carolina got back inside. After some time she looked out the window and didn't see him. Lisa, however, still didn't think the coast was clear. He could have been hiding. Further she said he was [mentally] sick and getting worse. She advised Carolina not to confide in Santiago about this so he couldn't hold it against her later. She then said that Carolina herself should put away money for herself and her children “just in case.”

Nicolás and Federico talked about the party Nico was attending that evening with “an older woman”. He asked Federico if he wanted to come. Mia told her brother sotto voce that he couldn't. He realized that her revenge plan was happening that evening. He got off the phone quickly. Mia then told him that they're going to do more than mess with Joaquin's car. She pulled out a nasty-looking item that looked like giant tweezers.

Laura asked Lola questions about Patricia with the objective of getting a juicy story out of it. She promised to publish nothing, a promise she had broken to others in the past. The prostitution issue came up so Lola moved in closer and told her that Patricia tried to get her to do things she didn't want to. Laura repeated Patricia's story that the two of them had engaged in sexual congress with her married lover, which meant that Lola could be implicated in her death. Lola asked her not to tell anyone about this and Laura told her she would not publish it and would forget about it in the morning. Lola asked her what she wanted and Laura asked whether there had been a relationship between her mother and Damián.

Miriam told Mia and Federico that, as they knew, she didn't get along with their mother. Further that things in the business weren't good either and the bills for the house were very high. Federico realized that this combination of items added up to blame, finally asking her if she thought he was an idiot. He knew that Miriam had always hated Raquel and told her not to try to turn him against her. He then got up and left the room. Miriam then turned her attention to Mia, asking her “What do you think?”
What do you want me to think?” was her reply.

Godoy and Antonio talked about the report on the automobile. Vicente owned such a car. They talked about next steps.

Raquel and Santiago walked in on Miriam's talk with Mia. Miriam spat her usual venom at Raquel about not paying attention to her children because “you're busier with other people”.
What are you doing here?” Raquel asked.

I don't like talking with strangers in the way,” Miriam said. “For example, lovers.”

UA: Who's the ugly scruffy dude ?

That's Vicente, Carolina's brother. Every time we see him he gets nastier.

I don't remember any previous references to a sister. If she died young due to something like drugs that is a possible predictor of what will happen to Cinthia.

Urban, another extraordinary recap. Your level of detail and ability to narrate are amazing.

"A pointed black hat and a broom would not have been necessary to make her look any more like a witch" was my favorite of many.

Laura is detestable. Without scruples or an ounce of human kindness. Rough, sharp edges all the way around.

Mia and Federico have some type of bond. Telepathic or otherwise. They appear to read each other's thoughts effortlessly. "Mia then told him that they're going to do more than mess with Joaquin's car. She pulled out a nasty-looking item that looked like giant tweezers". Do we want to even speculate??

Damian is Svengali. I was astounded he was able to turn Raq's (righteous) anger off so quickly. Controlling and manipulative. Caro is putty in his hands.

Are Raq and Santiago blameless for their spouses respective fates or are one (or both) hiding a terrible truth.

I haven't discounted any of the children. Mia and Lola remain prime suspects. Mia for her heat and Lola for her cool.

Wonderful UA! Thank you.

Diana

I think Mia & Federico are twins so a psychic bond wouldn't be surprising.

Laura probably figures everyone else gets to have whatever they want with no regard to hurting others so she's going to get hers too and if others get hurt, too bad. She's bitter and hurting and spreading that virus around to everyone else. I think Laura will end up cracking the case, though.

Carolina was not a helpless doe, powerless against Damian's charms. She chose to leave her daughter during a troubling time to have sex with Damian. She was not thinking about Lola's problems when she was rolling around in the bed with Damian. She only started thinking about her husband & children again when Raquel called and Caro feared they had been busted. THEN she was brought back to reality.

This is why I think Benja is Carolina's child that she dumped the responsibility off of on Lola (Santiago & Nicolas dump the responsibility of Benja on Lola too).

Now she's not wanting to cheat on Damian by being absent with Santiago during sex.

Raquel is not wanting to believe Damian is cheating on her so she's going to believe the "I love yous" and strong thirst for sex from Damian.

Nicolas & Fede are very observant as to the atmosphere & around them.

Mia needs help. She's also as manipulative as Damian.

Thanks UA!

I'm glad Caro is now suspecting that she isn't Damian's first affair. Damian seems too much of an expert for Caro to be his first mistress. He has duped both Caro and Raq.

All signs seems to be pointing the two worst people (other than Dam and Caro, of course) finding out about the affair before Santi and Raq. And that would be Andres and Vicente. Andres for sure. He'd definitely use it to his advantage too. Not sure at this point if Vicente has anything to gain from possibly finding out about the affair.

The attraction between Raq and Santi is most definitely evident now but the circumstances are not the best.

It seems to me like Laura is looking for fame and fortune by cracking this case. Ugh.

Thanks Urban for your prompt recap. Last night's episode was especially confusing to me and your recap helped clear up some questions. But I still cannot figure out:
a) the name of the child (son?) of Vincente and Lisa? Where is the child?
b) Do we know if Nicolas went on a date with Patricia the time when he told Frederico he was "'going out with an older woman''?

Thanks, Urban. Great job.

“I'm sorry if I'm not reacting the way you want me to. I'm sorry.” She ended the call before she could lose her composure.

I loved Raquel’s sarcasm. SN is so good at that.

“Damián, you don't understand. I left my daughter at the worst time. With those jerks and that damned cousin of yours.”

Yes, you sure did. No excuses what-so-ever.

“I can't. I can't. I am dying to make love with you but this would only be revenge and we are not like them.”

I don't want to see them do it, because it will pale in comparison to Damian and Carolina. I hope they go the romance route first and leave the hot pants for later.

Bravo to Mia for plotting revenge. I know it’s wrong and will come back to bite her on the butt, but at least she has a fighting spirit.

We don't know the name of Vicente & Lisa's son or where he is or who he is. I'm going to assume this kid is younger than Nico/Lola etc (but obviously older than Benja) because otherwise he'd be old enough to tell Vicente to step off.

I'm going to assume Vicente & Lisa's son is between 5 and 15 years of age.

I would assume the older woman was indeed "Patricia".

Laura's nosiness might end up saving Lola from Juan.

Carolina saying"Damian you don't under -stand I left my daughter at the worst
Time...... That does not muster up any
Sad feelings in me towards her cuz she
Hopped her little hot butt in bed with another Woman's husband and forgot all about her daughter and the worst time she's Going through. She made a choice. A very Regrettable one.

ITA Niceie in MD,to me the romance is
More fun when it's done right. I guess
It depends on what you think is right. Not what D&C did. That was horrible.

Wow that character that gab plays is a
Manipulating sly jerk. All the guys I've ever seen him play were sweet and
Romantic, in a good way. Well At least
Now I know he's good at playin a slimy
Creep. Good acting Gabriel Soto.

One of the major issues about Lola is that she kept a lot of things from her parents for too long. They can't act on what they don't know.

I'm not so sure that Damian has cheated before if only because Andres would have caused trouble for him about it before. His threats of ratting him out to Raquel would have happened before and Damian would have had to end his dalliances or be outed with all the consequences that can come with that. Andres has the motive and I don't see why he would wait that long.

Nice work, Urban. Thank you!

At the Alvarado house, Patricia told Nico she had come to invite Lola to a party. Later, Nico phoned Fede and invited him along to that very party with "an older woman." And earlier, we heard Lola and Juan planning to meet that evening at a party: they would each arrive alone and act surprised to see each other. I wonder if the Patio will be invited to that party tonight.

Joaquin is also going to a party (presumably not the one Patricia and Nico and maybe Lola and Juan will be at –– though who knows. We know these stories feed off improbable coincidences.) He's driving his father's SUV there and, because he's planning to get drunk, he's posted a little contest asking his friends to compete for the privilege of being his designated driver home. Mia had previously toyed with the idea of actually blowing up that vehicle. (Remember the YouTube video.) Now she tells Fede she knew he would be too scared to go along with that plan –– but she has another, less risky way to get even. And then she pulls out those scary looking forceps (or whatever they are).

I think we've gotten some ham-handed hints that Damian has had affairs with Cinthia (remember, in an earlier episode, how she wept as she looked at him in his hospital bed) and also with Raquel's ex-BFF (Daniela?). It's clear that he's a practiced and polished adulterer. Tonight we saw him showing off his champion liar skills on Caro.

Of course we know Caro is no slouch as a liar either. I suspect her attack of remorse and angst was as much a performance as Dam's "I never cheated on Raquel before" schtick.

Yes, I agree with you all on Laura's reptilian nature. I expected at least a twinge – or a twingelet – of conscience when she heard that Patricia was dead, thinking that somehow her actions might have provoked this tragedy. But sadly, no. Her first and only thought was how to use this to her own advantage.

Tonight we heard Vicente clearly threaten to kill Carolina. (There's no dearth of suspects, is there?)

Diana, I love this observation of yours:

"I haven't discounted any of the children. Mia and Lola remain prime suspects. Mia for her heat and Lola for her cool."

Niecie, it's good to see you here too. And yes, Silvia does sarcasm beautifully.

Lots of plot thickener added last night even if nothing in particular really happened...

Just stopping by to thank you, Urban. Well crafted, well delivered.

My personal opinion is that Vicente might be implicated in Carolina's death. What would he gain from it--and this happening three years after, in his drunken haze had him sending death threats her way. Did he hold his anger and animosity that long? Well, we did see him curling his lip back and telling Nando and later Santi what kind of woman he believed she was.

By implicated--I mean maybe he wanted to scare her and was responsible for bumping the car from the rear, but not that it would go over the embankment.

If we go by the look Caro had on her face as she "recognized" someone in the car at the toll booth, it wouldn't have been any of the 4 kids. It would have been surprise and not fear. Is there anyone else she fears right now besides Andres and Vicente?

If Caro had recognized the driver as someone who meant them harm, wouldn't she have said something to Dam as soon as they pulled away? We heard their conversation and there was no hint of harm, just guilt and shame on her part.

I say "red herring" until some future episode says otherwise.

That goes for Nico--none of us knew he actually had met Patricia. Maybe tonight we'll find out if he actually went to that party with her. Wonder what Mia has in mind.
