Caer en Tentacion #59, 1/11/18: Who is the Sicker One?

Some scenes have been combined to provide continuity.

Nacho thinks he knows who the ideal murder suspect is. Santi tells him to spill it, now. Ok, it's Miriam. Think about it. She's someone who knows every move they make, someone who is a master manipulator, who despises everyone around her, so why not Miriam. She could have planned it, she could have been responsible.

Santi can't believe she would ever want to harm her own son. He begins to recall how Dam gave them everything they asked for (and more). He concludes Dam did it just to distract him from figuring out what he and Caro were doing. Nacho still recommends taking their new suspicion to Antonio. After all, they put him in jail with no verifiable evidence, only circumstantial. Now Tonio should be willing to investigate Miriam.

Bebo arrives to see Lola. He's worried about her and tells Santi that Juan is stalking her again. He's dangerous. Santi and Nacho don't want him to do anything. Santi will take on the responsibility for his daughter.

Mimi and Raquel are having a screaming match about who is the sicker one. Raq brings up Mimi's temporary insanity again, but Mimi has some ammunition of her own--Mia's psychological problems culminating in her recent "suicide" attempt AND Raquel's own long history of instability. (Now perhaps we can understand better Raq's mood swings.) Jovita observes and Rueda stands by and tries to get them to be civil to one another and come to an agreement. Raq says the only solution would be to stop the custody proceedings. Miriam refuses. She blames Raq for all their misfortune. Raq reminds her that Caro was the one who had a child with her husband--and that was her fault? As Mimi continues to run her mouth, Jovita takes charge and takes Raquel upstairs.

Rueda wonders why Mimi wouldn't negotiate. She retorts that it's no use. Raq is unbalanced. She's had these episodes off and on for years and her son just got tired of it. She's sick.

At Legato, Fede finds out Luz is avoiding him, not because of the kiss or that he likes her, but because she thought he was gay. He's fine with just leaving it right there and walks off. She tells Danny that he was right, Fede is not what he says he is and walks off, leaving Danny as puzzled as we are.

Raq comes to check on Mia. Mia wonders why her abuela didn't come up to see her. Raq tells her Miriam only came to bother her. SinCin comes in to let Raq know that Licenciada Alina is downstairs. Mia throws a hissy fit because she is the one who's getting it on with Nico. Although he denies it, she's sure of it. Cin convinces her she's probably there about the Benjamin case, Mia lets Raq go. Then she wheedles the phone out of Cin and calls Nico. He tells her he's tried to call her but her phone has been off. He wants to be with her and wants her to get better. He'll see her later.

Alina has come to tell Raq she's going to file a petition in Lola's name but she needs to have both her children sign the document she brought. She's sure at least one of her children is ok with this. She notes that Raq is a little distracted and begins to make small talk. Raq manages to get it across that Nico is very attached to Mia. Alina says Nico is very smart and able and she doesn't want to lose him.

Right after Alina leaves, Raq calls the Foundation doctor/counselor. Raq first asks about Lola and he tells her she wouldn't listen to reason. She doesn't want to save the baby. Raq says they have to DO something about this. She seems to be losing it and the doc wants to know if she's taking her meds. Maybe they have to up the dosage. (And we're just learning about this now?) He'll stop by later.

Nico and Bebo are hanging out waiting for Lola to get home. Bebo tries to find out what's up with him and the attorney. She even asked Bebo about him. Bebo, who admits to knowing a little about women has pegged her as dangerous (liaisons--boiled bunny heads, etc.). Nico says the desire is gone. He had sex with her and then she ignored him. He didn't know where he stood, but he needs the job. He likes her--a lot--but he's in love with Mia. Bebo recommends he play the game. As long as Alina is in control, everything is fine, but if she loses control of the situation, the only one affected is Nico. Bebo's advice column is cut short by Lola's arrival. She's in a bad mood and goes to her room. Bebo follows to go talk to her.

Cin tells Raq that Mia has calmed down. She also tells her she loaned Mia her phone and she called Nico. Raq expresses fear for Mia, for Santi. Cin wonders if Dam knew about Benji being his. Raq says yes, he set up a trust fund for him in case something happened to Dam. Cin begins to see the signs of Raq's relapse. She tells her to be strong. This time, Raq doesn't know what she's going to do; it's not like the other times. Cin is with her and hugs her. Cin seems to be the strong one now.

El Pasado
The doc is talking Raq through one of her panic attacks. He wants her to follow his directions because he can't always be with her. It seems this episode was provoked by her strong desire to get pregnant. She wanted so much to have a baby. Then they called her from the clinic and told her her sister was in a bad way. Then she began to worry that if this baby turns out like Mia, she doesn't know what she'd do. Doc recommends she start her medical treatments again because she's babbling incomprehensibly. Jovita comes in with some tea. Doc tells her a hug would do Raquel a lot of good.

Caro and Damian are at it again in her house, just where they left off at the Becker's house. Caro hands Dam the unvarnished truth. He will never leave his family and she'll never leave hers. They are both cowards. She accuses him of only wanting her for sex. He says that's not true. He loves her. Has she forgotten he left Raq for her and she made him go back to Raquel? She's pissed he's still having relations with Raquel. He has to explain--again--that he's Raq's husband and he can't just avoid it. He says everything is different now because there is a child, his child. The argument rises over a mother's rights vs. a father's. Santi walks in on the argument. They fall silent in front of his questioning eyes. Finally, Dam says they were arguing about Caro's resigning from the catering business. He's not in favor of it. It has Raq worried. Santi sort of believes him. Caro is put out and withdraws. Santi then begins to thank Dam for everything he's done for them and then asks him to be Benji's godfather, as Caro sees and overhears.

Caro emerges and wants to know why Santi asked Dam to be the godfather. Did he do it because of the money? Santi comes right back with why she asked Raquel to be the godmother. Did she do it for money? No, Caro says she doesn't think Dam would be a very good godfather. Santi is really angry and comes out wanting to know what is going on with her and Dam...why is she distancing herself--again--from the Beckers? Caro is speechless as she absorbs Santi's words coming so close to home.

Mike brings Andres a bag full of money. Andres is skeptical that this money-laundering scheme would work. Dam keeps a close eye on him. Mike says there are always risks. The look and the smell of 5 million dollars is enough to convince Andres. What is he supposed to do with it? Anything! Start new franchises for the catering business or Legato. The money comes back clean. Their "investors" expect at least a 60% return. The rest they keep. Andres' eye dance (sort of) at the prospect.

Epoca Actual
Santi and Nacho have gone to Juan's house to do what? Just talk? He's frustrated because his mother tells him Juan had to go on a last minute trip for his work, out of the city.

Cin (I've decided to drop the Sin part, since she's stepped up to the plate for family--and maybe justice.) greets Nando with a warm embrace at an outdoor café. He smiles but tells her not to misinterpret things. He's glad she called, but he doesn't have much time. He's back to square one, no suspects, or at least none until that fingerprint is identified. So, they are going to follow the money--at Legato. He's surprised she would know they'd look into Legato's financial affairs. Of course, she says, after Dam, Raquel is the person in charge and she'll be held responsible for anything amiss. She doesn't want Raq to suffer any more troubles. Nando listens intently. He does believe there are strange goings on in Legato, movement of money, money withdrawn, money deposited, all with no paper trail. He suspects money-laundering.

Bebo draws Lola out and she finally confesses to being pregnant, the who and the how it happened. She wants to keep it a secret between the two of them. She absolutely refuses to talk to Juan, the father, as Bebo suggested. She won't have this child by that guy. She won't. She's not going to have it. Bebo doesn't find her repulsive. He half understands and will be there for her.

Cin is on the phone with someone. She knows the person on the other end cares for Raquel. They'll meet in 20 minutes. Raquel looks completely deflated, docile and easily talked into leaving her kids to go somewhere. Cin asks her to stay calm.

Laura is hard on the job. She's arrived at the Legato offices, trying to get information out of Andres. He has nothing to say to the press about the attempt on his cousin's life. She says that's precisely why he's a suspect and the police think so, too. She states (incorrectly, in my opinion) that by not talking to the press, it doesn't help him at all. Andres asks how it would benefit him to talk to her? Then he realizes she mentioned the police. She seems to know things hardly anyone else knows. Well, that's when he finds out she's the wife of the lead investigator, Fernando Godoy. He ponders whether or not to speak to her on the record. (We are left to find out, probably tomorrow or Monday.)

Alina and Nico are at her law office and they have a little tiff. He's making mistakes. Is he distracted by that girl? No, but he asks if the condition of his employment depends on his breaking up with her. She accedes that it doesn't, as long as he works better. He has a rare opportunity to work in this law practice and he should be more responsible. She seductively hands him some document he's to take to the court. He leans in, seductively, takes the document, seems as though he will kiss her and backs away. Alina looks frustrated. Nico won this round. (Honey, you are not playing the game according to Bebo's rules. You are going to lose, unless you know Alina better and she's told you she likes her young prey a bit testy.)

Nacho waits by the car with Santi for Cin to arrive with Raquel. Nacho promises to keep an eye on the business for as long as it takes. Cin and Santi talk first. She wants him to know the delicate condition Raquel is in and he's the one who can help her best. She needs him. Cin tells him Raq had some sort of panic attack and has been medicated. Apparently Santi knew of these episodes (that we are learning for the first time he knew). She continues, Raq needs to be with someone who loves her and will protect her, away from all the conflict.

Raq gets out of the car, wobbly, but there on the street, Santiago takes her in his arms, kisses her and hugs her tightly. She's enveloped by his love and care. He asks if she will come with him to a place, for awhile, where they can be happy? She goes with him and gets in the car.

FULL CIRCLE?
R: Are we leaving everything?
S: Raquel, everything will be all right. Don't think about it. Nothing will change.
R: What about my children, your children, your job, the business?
S: I know, I know. All the time we tried to control it (eso). The only thing we couldn't control was us and what was ours (lo nuestro). Why don't you stop for one minute thinking of others and think of us, or try to.
R: (She nods) Where are we going?
S: I don't know. Wherever the road leads. Is that ok?
R: For how long?
S: For as long as you need. I love you.
R: And I you.
They kiss and drive into traffic as their theme song, Te Prometo, swells in the background.

Anita: Good thing that Nacho & Santiago both told Bebo to NOT get involved in the situation with good reason.

Gracias, Anita. I eagerly await Part 2.

I don't think Raquel has mental health issues apart from her currently stressful situation. She may be slightly bi-polar but I don't see anything else. What I do see is Miriam making up whatever she thinks it will take to destroy her.

Here's hoping that Bebo can help Lola. At 20 she is an adult and should not cave to any demand that she have a baby she doesn't want and wouldn't be ready for. She does not need what would come with that, which is risk to her life.

I don't believe that Juan is away "on business." His mother is either lying or he lied to her.

More later.

Thanks, Anita for part 1. I had missed a few details and alway appreciate those in a recap! I got a chuckle out of your knocking Bebo's worldly wise view of women. Maybe it's just me but the way these "kids" talk about their experienced love-lives and give advice like Dr. Phil or Miss Manners to the lovelorn makes me feel sooooo old (which I guess I am).

As for Episode 10, I get the feeling Andres colors the truth a lot if not out lies.

Thanks for part 1, Anita!

I actually agreed with Carolina when she questioned Damian about him only wanting her for sex. I still don’t think what they have is love. Especially when compared to what Santiago and Raquel have in the present. While it is the stupidest idea for Damian to be Benjamin’s godfather, Carolina obviously couldn’t come up with a good enough reason as to why he shouldn’t be the godfather.

I wonder who will take the fall for the money laundering.

While I understand his intentions, it was probably a bad idea for Fede to hide his true identity from Luz and Danny. They’re gonna figure it out and won’t be happy.

I’ll be back later.

It's all done now. I added a final sentence to the Caro-Damian confrontation I'd left out the part after Damian leaves, wanting to know what was going on between Caro and Damian and why was she again trying to distance them from the Beckers. Of course none of her behavior made sense to Santi.

It is amazing that 59 episodes in, we are still peeling back layers of our complicated characters. There are still many buried secrets waiting to be revealed.

Stellar Anita.

"Bebo, who admits to knowing a little about women has pegged her as dangerous (liaisons--boiled bunny heads, etc.)" and "Andres' eye dance (sort of) at the prospect" were among favorites.

"Raquel's own long history of instability. (Now perhaps we can understand better Raq's mood swings.)" and " (And we're just learning about this now?)" echoed my exact sentiments (after reading your recap as I did not understand any of this dialog last night). To be honest, I silently criticized Silvia for being over the top prior to the murder/accident. But now, it all makes sense. Painful sense. It makes me even angrier at Damian's betrayal to an already wounded bird.

"Cin seems to be the strong one now". Yes and how scary is that??? That said, she rose to the challenge last night. Perhaps a new chapter for her.

“Santi sort of believes him. Caro is put out and withdraws”. I thought Caro had the most incredulous, unbelieving look while Damian spewed his lies to Santi. If Santi had turned to faced her and really paid attention to the look on her face, he might have come to realize this is all rubbish. Not so clean and simple.

I keep wondering if Santi is not as oblivious as I think he is...I really wish I could remove him from my list of suspects.

My heart goes out to Lola each night. I am glad she confided in Bebo. And I believe she has every right to make a decision as to the pregnancy. Whatever her choice, it needs to be respected. And Urban, I didn't believe for a second Juan was away either.

I liked Nico's quiet yet unmistakable slight snubbing of Alina. I hope he continues. As for how he feels about Mia? I don't even pretend to understand it. He must see some vulnerability, some redeeming qualities. I do not.

For the first time, I really felt as though Santi and Raq are in love with each other. For the right reasons. Yet, I'm still not convinced that it is a good idea for a hundred different reasons. But who am I???

Anita, thank you.

Diana

UA: Juan is still stalking Lola like she's his property.

An afterthought--Did Raq get Mia and Nico's signatures on the legal document before her melt-down and escape with Santi.

Thanks Anita!!!

I'm hoping that Raq just suffers from panic attacks and nothing more serious. The fact that she, Cin and Mia all have mental issues makes you wonder about heredity.

Anita, I'd be shocked if Mia signed anything. And how is Mia going to feel with Raq now under Santi's care?

Glad Nacho is going to throw Miriam under the bus to Antonio.

The whole Laura story line bugs me. What reporter has breaking news every night? And what anchor is also the only investigator? Has nothing else of interest happened in this town to be covered? Come on

Thanks, Anita. Goodness, posting Part 1 at 2 a.m.? Hope you get some sleep.

Bebo, who admits to knowing a little about women has pegged her as dangerous (liaisons--boiled bunny heads, etc.). -- lol!

Santi can't believe she would ever want to harm her own son.

I vote Nacho is onto something. What if Miriam’s plan got fouled up somehow and her henchperson wound up clunking Damian in the head against orders?

Raq calls the Foundation doctor/counselor. Raq first asks about Lola and he tells her she wouldn't listen to reason. She doesn't want to save the baby. Raq says they have to DO something about this.

Disappointed that Raq turned Lola over to a counselor that can't directly relate to her dilemma. If Juan were out of the picture -- like under an eight-wheeler -- she could handle this pregnancy. But doesn't look like Juan is going anywhere. I too believe his mother was lying. And since Santi knew she knew he was there to chastise his son and mama bears protect their young, he should've figured this too. I hate Damian's cheating and lying, but dang, he had more cunning than Santi.

He leans in, seductively, takes the document, seems as though he will kiss her and backs away. Alina looks frustrated. Nico won this round.

I don’t know if this was a smart move by Nico, but I loved Alina deflated just the same.

So Raq is maybe bipolar? Better explains her hyper with Caro and Santi in the past. But Raq has always been kind to her family and friends, so I don't see Damian suffering from it.

In past episodes, Raquel has been seen taking "drops" of medications and pills. I've wondered what it was she was taking and last night revealed why she was taking them.

Miriam screamed at Raquel that Damian had had enough of her episodes and that's why he turned to Carolina. So while there is no defense for cheating, IF Raquel has been having regular meltdowns, Damian may have gotten tired of it and found in Carolina (and others) a partner who isn't as exhausting as Raquel.

Yes, Santi knew that Juan's mom knew that he (Santi) knew about Juan abusing Lola and was there to administer a beatdown. But with Juan's mom lying that he went out of town, what was Santi to do? He couldn't have stormed Juan's mom's apartment and beat Juan up because then Juan and mom could have Santi charged with assault & home invasion and he'd lose custody of Benjamin for sure. I guess he could've waited outside Juan's apartment building to get him but who has time to do that?

Raquel wanted very much to have a baby, so I'm figuring she sent Lola to that counselor to try and talk Lola out of abortion.

Anon207--You have an eye for minute detail, for sure. Of course, NOW I recall Raq with a small bottle and fiddling with it. I dismissed it at the time because I thought she was nervous and it was nail polish. What would I know.....

Santi could've had a stranger knock on Juan's door. "Is Juan home? He's won Mexico's Family Publishers Sweepstakes! He just needs to sign right here!" :>

The only source of Damian's suffering prior to Carolina is Miriam. Her controlling nature has probably interfered with his life from the get-go and perhaps more so since his father died. We weren't told when that was but I'll bet it was during or just after his senior year of college. He must have moved out before then; I'm amazed she wasn't under the same roof.

She isn't close to her grandchildren and that might be out of a general indifference to babies. If she succeeds in getting custody of Benjamin everyone will see her true colors.

Niecie, ah yes, the famous Publishers Clearinghouse Sweepstakes!

Great Idea! :)

Surprise, surprise!

Diana

If Raquel was prone to meltdowns to the point of her having to be medicated to bring her down, Damian very well could've been exhausted dealing with her. He could've been fearful (before the Carolina affair) that to leave Raquel might mean she would REALLY meltdown.

For all we know, Raquel's meltdowns could've started up right after she had Fede & Mia and maybe THAT'S the real reason Damian didn't want to have any more children with her, because he didn't want to trigger any more meltdowns.

Now we know Damian wasn't concerned about Raquel's mental health and meltdowns when Carolina entered the picture.

There's no excuse for cheating but Damian could've very well be burnt out dealing with Raquel's meltdowns, Mia's meltdowns and Miriam's fits of anger. Quiet Carolina would've been a welcome break.

However, I think Damian would've grown tired/frustrated of Carolina as well because he would've gotten bored with her and she has had fits of frustration/anger herself. Plus both of them know he likely wouldn't have left Raquel/twins and married her. Carolina never would've been accepted in their social circles. They would have to run away and make a fresh start somewhere else. Would Damian have left behind all the money of Legato to start over? I'm not so sure at his age.

We haven't seen Raq have any breakdowns in the flashbacks prior to her negative pregnancy test. I don't want to give Dam any excuses for his deeds and so far all seemed fine in the marriage until Caro walked by his store. And I think he has had prior flings too. On the other hand, the fact that he doesn't want a divorce could mean a.) he fears Raq having a breakdown or b.) her breakdowns have been insignificant in their marriage and not enough to propel him to divorce.

Anon207--Quiet Carolina?? I could hear her and Dam from the kitchen last night. Since she started to flex her wings, she also started to flex her argumentative side. It showed up--ok, in a quiet way--in an early episode when she chides Santi with wanting everything just the way it is, her at home with the kids, dinner on the table on time, the dishes in the right place, clothes folded and put away (I'm paraphrasing).

I don't think he'd ever heard her express herself like that before.

Compared to Raquel, yes Carolina is quiet. However, she's been having fits and tantrums and i don't think Damian would be putting up with that long term. Which is why I don't think they would last.

True, but Caro is also very bland, while Raq is a hot pepper. Surely Damian has figured that out by now (that is 3 years ago), but apparently not if he was willing to risk everything for a couple of days with her in Miami. Of course, he wasn't counting on a road accident.

Regarding someone sent by Miriam who got carried away when he(?) hit Dam on the head. If that scenario is correct, he would have had to hit Dam pretty hard, intentionally so he wouldn't remember who came upon them. THEN the perp could have dragged Caro out. If we go back to that episode where we saw someone in a long white dress and overcoat running through the countryside (we're pretty sure now that was Carolina), she saw the aggressor, even though she had been badly wounded and Dam had called 911 for an ambulance. He could have shot her anywhere, even a fatal shot at her grave site. What a horrible way to die.

Lovely tumultus episode Anita. Good
Recap. I love The way you captured how
Santi loves and protects Raquel. These
People have mental problems.I do hope
Raquel can come out of this.Maybe that
Is why dam wanted no more offspring
With raquel, Mia is a mess. All these people are a mess. Poor santi, I hope he can find some happiness with Raquel and her with him.
This comment is late so I cut off and
Comment on tnights episode tomorrow, tomorrow tomorrow I'll comment tomorrow it's only a day awaaaaaay. I must really be out of it In type singing. Exhaustion, busy day.

Thank you Anita.

Maybe that Is why Dam wanted no more offspring. Mia is a mess

Nina, I got to agree with Dam. Raq already had a full plate of issues to deal with.

I've always thought of Raquel as the more dynamic one of the Raguel-Santi duo, and that she'd be the one calling the shots. But Santi's loyalty and perseverance to stick with her can't be denied. And he's grown since his days of wanting to keep Caro at home.

I agree with that Niecie! He has grown
For the better.

Hashtag, Me Too, but not the current meaning. I just sent Stevey a note at the halfway point in CET to let him know that I, at least, am thoroughly invested in, and perhaps a little obsessed by this novela. That goes for the character development as well as the story.
