Por Amar Sin Ley, 3/27/18 Chapter 16: Of Trials, Tribulations and Preparations

It is just another glorious and victorious day in court for our accomplished attorneys.

Victoria wins her case against the disingenuous, dastardly Dario when Rocio's housekeeper claims she saw Ro with a black eye.  Dario defames his ownse'f when he admits he went to anger management therapy.  (Viewerville's take is maybe a few therapists need to be held responsible for declaring people cured when they're anything but--however that's a topic for another day.)  Vicki uses a declaration of bruises and fear from Ro's dinner guest and a passionate plea that somebody has to speak for her dead friend in winning her case against Ro's rotten-to-the-core killer spouse.  Oh, and los abuelos get custody of the kids.

Alejandra is a witness at Virginia's December-May marriage.  (This guy doesn't qualify for May--more like March!)

Roberto congratulates Vicki and they hug.  She accepts the hug but not the declaration he's hers unconditionally.

Benjamin abuses Gustavo's friendship by gossiping about the fact that at the party Gus's ex-lover sent a video to his wife and his marriage and home life are hanging by a thread.  Benji immediate tells licentious Leticia all abowdit--complete with snickers and a mighty dose of the pot calling the kettle black.  "--He should have known better than to get caught!  He's an attorney!" Oli comes in to ask what's up with Gus herself and gets the 411.

Ricardo and Ale discuss Ginny's marriage to her male nurse as well the pitiable state she finds herself in due to her disrespectin' kin's disregard for anything 'ceptin' her dinero.  Ric helps Ale practice questioning techniques.  Ric also mentions the life-altering spat and splat between Gus and his wife.  "--Infidelity is hard to forgive and even harder to forget....."

The SJW lawyer congratulates Vicki on the outcome of the trial.  We thinks he just might have a crush on Lady Vi.

Oli now discusses Gus's pitiful marital plight with Leonardo.  It just serves to make Leo more determined to swear off ladies and love.  Oli says she believes that when the right person comes along then all will be forgotten.  He politely disagrees.

Gus pays a visit to the melancholic Melena.  He physically attacks her and then threatens her if she continues to meddle in his personal life. Viewervile has visions of Fatal Attraction with a twist of to-be-determined.  Suffice it to say that the menace of Melania has not adequately been dealt with.

Oli has another hear-to-heart with Vicki.  She bemoans the fact that Leo is evermore distant.

Alan gives Leo the names and addresses of the other "dancers" that were at the bachelor party in hopes of digging up other people who might have had murderous intentions towards Paticia.

Rob and Leo try to tracking down the hookers through their phone numbers and even the website but find that the website doesn't exist and the phone numbers are useless: a deader than dead end.

Oli gets the old "there are more fish in the sea" advice from the firm's office manager.  She suggests using a Mexican  match.com  to meet other people and go out.

Gus gets told the marriage is over and he's expected to leave.  He ends up begging not to be denied seeing his son.  Ok, but he won't give up on their marriage.  (I must say that I do love the string instrumental throughout the episodio this evening.)

Ric gives Ale a backgrounder on how he worked his way through college and earned every peso he's made.  Ale gives Ric a 200 peso bill (about $11) for his services.  He takes it as a good luck charm--no doubt to take its place next to her garter belt.

When the judge finds for Ginny, he also gives temporary custodial rights to the family fortune to Ginny's male nurse!!  (I think it's just while Ginny undergoes a court appointed professional to examine her mental faculties--and/or he wants to interview her as well.)  The court room goes wild--or rather Ginny's daughter does.  "--What right does he have??? He's not even a blood relative," screams the daughter.  "--In the capacity of husband!" And it's Katy bar the door in the courtroom.  (Viewerville does not believe for one minute that this subplot or Ginny's story will end here.  Nosirreebob!)

Carlos gets a visit from Leo who brings Rob this time.  He gives Rob a message thanking Ric for assisting his "future wife".  Later, in the hallway, Rob mentions that message to Ric as rather odd: it's more like a warning (than a thank you?)

Ginny gets on the stand and testifies that the nurse in all these five years she's known him has been kind to her--her best friend--unlike her ungrateful kids.  (I tend not to trust the guy any further than I could throw him, myself!)  Final decision will come after the court appointed psychiatrist makes a report.

SJW lawyer sees his neighbor lady being taken off to jail.  She begs him to believe her and that she is innocent.  SJW says stay quiet and don't say a word on the way there. (I think)  He'll help her out.  He looks at the case file and sees that Rob will be the opposing counsel.  Intimidating, for sure!

Ric meets up with Ale out in the hallway of the courthouse.  She's grateful for his support and expertise; she's won the first step of the case.  They hug and Ric is thoughtful....

I thought it was a mistake for Ricardo to show up at the court, because if Virginia's kids see him they will accuse Ricardo & Alejandra of collusion.

In addition to gossiping & laughing about Gustavo's affair, Benjamin & Leticia were also wondering how they could use Gustavo's misfortunes to their advantage. I want to say Benjamin said something to the effect of "If Gustavo is making mistakes in his personal life, he's also making mistakes in his professional life." So, I think Benjamin & Leticia will conspire to get Gustavo fired (just like they are conspiring for Alejandra to get fired).

I realize Gustavo is in pain but it's a pain of his own making and he shouldn't expect Isabel to make any decisions about their relationship when she just found out about the cheating 5 minutes ago.

Gustavo also needs to leave Milena alone. I forsee somebody (Benjamin/Leticia) whacking Milena, and setting Gustavo up for murder. Stop talking to her. And based on the previews for tonight's episode, he needs to go to the police on her.

Gustavo can NEVER have a relationship with Isabel as long as Milena is in the picture. Gustavo yells at Milena for attacking Isabel & their family but Gustavo is the one who allowed Milena to attack Isabel in the first place. He did not protect Isabel. So now Isabel is protecting herself. Milena has threatened to keep sending photos and videos to Isabel until Isabel is destroyed. If Gustavo really loves Isabel, he will need to start PROTECTING Isabel from Milena and that doesn't mean threatening her. File charges on her or get a restraining order. Do not threaten or have any contact with Milena.

Looks like Ricardo was Juan years ago.

Jardinera, thank you for such a wonderful recap full of sidebar worthy turns of phrase.
I especially loved the opening sentence "It is just another glorious and victorious day in court for our accomplished attorneys" and "complete with snickers and a mighty dose of the pot calling the kettle black".

Your opening sentence managed to summarized the last 16 episodes of this telenovela so accurately. Vega and associates are the most capable, invincible lawyers that ever lived, they are never ever wrong and will never lose a case. Oh, and they also get to prosecute the cases that concern them whenever they want to.

When I watched the last episode, I had a strong suspicion that Dario is actually on trial for murder and not a party to a custody case. I hoped I will be proven wrong in the next episode, since being prosecuted by a witness to the crime who is actually testifying while delivering her closing arguments is too farfetched even for the dumbest telenovelas (style Gata and the idiotic Tierras Salvajes) let alone for such a stellar and expensive production, but alas I was sorely disappointed.

The entire Dario trial segment was absurd beyond belief : apart from Victoria unnecessary acting as a prosecutor when there are perfectly good prosecutors already available in the PASL universe ( like Carlos' prosecutor), the total time spent on such an important case was less than five minutes in this episode and maybe another 2 minutes in the previous one with a single witness statement from the maid, no psychiatric reports as to Dario's mental capacity and with no apparent line of defense by, probably, the worst criminal defense attorney Dario could find (was he going for an insanity defense? if so, then why wasn't a psychiatric report provided? if not, what was his line of defense? and why did he not deliver a closing statement when the judge asked him whether he wanted to add something?)

And why, oh why didn't the judge argument his sentence and, in the process, address the issue of domestic violence? Domestic abuse is such a prevalent issue in Mexico that surely they could have done a better job showcasing it.

Anon 207, you are correct about collusion. I am virtually certain that it is an ethical violation for Ricardo to betray his clients and to pass the case to a lawyer from his own law firm to represent the opposing party. Although he refrained from directly providing information beneficial to her case to Alejandra, she probably inferred a lot of it from Ricardo's behavior and therefore, had an unfair advantage over the new lawyer of the family. Moreover, the payment from Virginia will go to Vega and Associates and will eventually benefit Ricardo, so one could argument that he betrayed his clients, convinced the opposing party, in complete violation of the duty of loyalty that is due to his clients, to hire a lawyer from his law firm and eventually benefited from the whole situation.

Irene

Didn't Oli just lose a case that Leticia told her she was going to lose?

I think Oli needs to log on to Match.com or eHarmony and leave Leonardo alone. Being thirsty is unattractive.

Gracias, Jardinera.

I can easily see Benjamin and Leticia doing whatever it takes to get Gustavo fired from the firm although I don't see how that would benefit them. Both are far less effective with clients than either Gustavo or Alejandra and with their current caseload Alonso would look elsewhere. Can't wait to see what happens at the next staff meeting.

Olivia won the age discrimination case. Leticia may have hoped she would lose it but again, Leticia would not benefit from that and in fact would be questioned as to whether she did the adequate prep work.

Let's see whom Juan ends up pursuing when he gets to Vega. He has the same passion for justice as both of the blondes. Maybe he will be competition for Roberto or go after Olivia.

I thought the same of Ricardo showing up at court too. But then the kids should have known Vega & Associates was representing Virginia when the parties were introduced.

At the end of Dario's murder trial, the judge said the custody case was going to family court.

Gustavo should definitely get a restraining order, as should his wife and son. Milena will never leave them alone.

I was expecting Victoria to chide Olivia for even speaking to Leonardo about love. The desperation easily reads off her face. This lady also played a similar role in LQLVMR.

Why is everyone such a gossip in that office?

Whenever I see Juan I think of George Lopez for some reason.

Anon1146

I hate Gustavo more with every passing episode. Granted, Milena is a bi--h, but everything that happened was Gustavo's fault and to come and physically assault and threaten her like is despicable.

By the way, did you guys notice that when Gustavo entered Milena's apartment he did not scream at her how dare she record him without his consent and when Milena talked about having more sex tapes, again Gustavo didn't gasp in horror and threaten to sue ? And when Isabel said to him that Milena provoked so much passion in him that he filmed himself in bed, he did not deny it? It can only mean one thing: all the sex tapes were consensual!

Irene

Olivia lost the petition for a case requesting for an increase in child support. Leticia originally thought she was being unreasonable in the request and rubbed that to her face because Olivia wouldn't listen to her.

I hope Juan doesn't pursue Olivia. He's smitten with Victoria though; the mother caught on to his praise.

Anon1146

Oli won the age discrimination case but she lost the other case, where she was asking for all this money for the dad. Leticia warned her not to do that but Oli was trying to get as much money for the dad as possible but it was struck down.

Gustavo is a senior attorney, I believe. If Gustavo is fired, that means a senior attorney position is open. I am not sure if Benjamin is a senior attorney or not but we know Leticia isn't one, so there's a opening for her (or Ben, if he's not a senior attorney). We know that position wouldn't be going to Juan, who will probably be hired to help Leonardo & Roberto with their caseload.

It doesn't matter if Gustavo consented to making the tapes, Milena does not have his consent to distribute the tapes. Again, there's only really 3 reasons why a willing other woman tells the wife/girlfriend:

1) For revenge
2) To "help" the married man/boyfriend make a decision
3) To get the wife/girlfriend to shut down the illicit relationship b/c she's too weak to do so herself.

Milena told Isabel for reasons 1 & 2. She wanted to punish Gustavo by hurting Isabel (reason 1) and to force Gustavo to choose her (reason 2). But Gustavo will never willingly go back to Milena because she exposed him and hurt Isabel. Even if Gustavo & Isabel divorce, he will never willingly go back to Milena. The fact she still thinks they will be together after she blew up his spot means she's very dangerous.

Juan's behavior is so childish and exaggerated. It was simply ridiculous for him to get up in plain court session and to scream bravo like some kind of football fanatic.

Also, if he works in the public defender's office, he shouldn't be allowed to take private cases on the side.

Anon 1146, you are right about Olivia's child support case, but since it happened off screen and it was maybe more of a failure to win more rather than an outright loss (if I am not mistaken, they already won the child support case, but Olivia got into a crusader for the poor and abused mode and wanted to get more) I don't think it should be counted as a loss.

Irene

Anon 207,
I wholeheartedly agree that even if the tapes were consensual, the distribution of the tapes surely wasn't but the mere fact that Gustavo was actually a willing participant makes him so much more despicable and emphasizes even more how dishonest he is with his wife. Someone happy in a marriage and loving his wife dearly would never ever willingly record a sex tape with another woman.

Also, I can't understand how a reasonably intelligent lawyer would take such a huge risk. He should have thought about the risk of such tapes (apparently a lot of them) being made public.

Jardinera654 good recap. Benny got the
Gall to be on ahigh horse that he will
Soon be tossed off of,in a very most
Embarrassing way I hope. I Hope his wife wipes the floor up will him and
Then do it a over again. Letty will get hers soon enough, but he is such an arrogant SOB. He's so careful we'll
See when his very heavey anvils fall.

Oli needs a long vacation and stop whinning after leo, cuz he clearly is
Not into her. She wont let him breath for A minute. Golly his heart's been spat On by a two faced sicko. I don't think We've seen the last of her. The baby Either. I'm just guessing, y'all know How they like to surprise us. Look at All the guess stars that have made an Appearance so far. Wouldn't be great if William levy showed up as Alonso's son?
A lawyer thats been working is the US?
On wall street? Yeah thats a stretch.
A girl can dream can't she?
Ok back to Reality.

When I was watchin Gus shake up milly
I thought, if something happens to her

Child or two. What a stupid man she got stuck With. Both of them. That heffa
Plotting. Y'all saw that look on her face? The Camara stayed on her face to let us know "something evil this way come".

Thank you Jardinera.

You always crack me up Jardinera. "disingenuous dastardly Dario". Indeed. Let's add in "depraved, degenerate and deadly". Also loved this concerning the May-December nuptials:

(This guy doesn't qualify for May--more like March!)

This whole marriage set-up is very disturbing. Who knows for sure if this guy is for real or just has been cleverly biding his time for 5 years?..and now finally it's paying off. Surprised Alejandra agreed to this idea so readily. And certainly not surprised that her children, however suspiciously greedy themselves, objected strenuously.

I dislike Gustavo even more than Carlos. Not exonerating the latter, but he was drunk, it was one, impersonal time, and Alejandra after a few down days seems to have perked up considerably now that Ricardo is on the horizon. On the other hand, Isabel, and the family they formed, are destroyed by this year-long tawdry affair.

Enjoying all the serious legal discussions in addition to the wonderful recaps by you and UA. Interesting and lively patio!

Many thanks Jardinera.

Thanks to all. Judy: had to laugh at your additional descriptors, all of which I wish I had thought of!

Collusion goes over my head here.

Gus has done what all BFF's do: the exact opposite of what was advised. Trouble abrewin'. Danger, danger, Will Robinson!!!!

Anon207: WTH was Ricardo thinking ? SMH.

This just keeps playing right into Elisa's hands.

Very satisfying recap, Jar. Thanks. With you, Irene, Urban, and the rest, you should form an advice column for attorneys and legal partnerships.

Nothing to add except my increased revulsion of Gus. He's so pitiful he himself could be very dangerous--he and his double-breasted suit (although I also spied Roberto wearing one, but he could pull it off).

There was no doubt in my mind about the sex tape--I'm pretty sure Gus actually referred to his participation. Whether Milena was "allowed" to distribute it with or without his consent, he should have known better. There was no way he could guarantee that he could collect all the evidence--Milena surely would have kept copies for herself.

He's been practicing family law long enough to know better than to dump a girl with a few words like, "It's better this way, in time, you'll see." OTOH, is there any way to avoid a blow-back? A fancy car, condo by the beach, monthly payments? None of it guarantees silence. How dumb could he be. Serves him right--whiner after the fact.

Will Roberto be the first Vega attorney we see lose a case--to Juan, the newbie? Or, will Rob make mincemeat out of him? I have a feeling this one is going to drag on.

The minute I saw Vinnie and Fermin tie the knot, my thoughts exactly, JudyB, that he's now going to turn on her, become her "keeper" and divert the money for his own use. Would be a nice twist if it turns out Lina and her brother had the right instincts about Fermi (although they are still in the doghouse for trying to put mama away in an institution and take over her business).

I don't think Gus was unhappy in his marriage or with Isabel. I think he does love Isabel and I think he was happy with her and his family life, it's just that he loves himself MORE. He was greedy and selfish. His greed and selfishness will likely cost him his wife and family. But I do think he loves Isabel. However, their relationship will never be the same, if she chooses to stay with him.

Gustavo could also have a Madonna/whore thing going on where he did things to and with Milena he would never dream to ask of Isabel.

Gustavo wasn't unhappy, he was just greedy.

Revenge porn is against the law in many areas, whether the other person consented to be taped or not. We don't know if it's against the law in Mexico or Mexico City but in a lot of places in the US it is. Uploading their sex tape to social media and spreading it around could get Milena arrested and thrown in jail where I live.

Let's not forget what Milena's actions could do to Gustavo's career and by extension the firm.

She could become a porn star from it which could bring her temporary notoriety but no man will ever trust her after this. As for Gustavo, his career could go right down the crapper.

Anon207--What a turn-about that would be for the Gus-Milena affair. I don't think she uploaded it, though, but she still has photos. Wonder what she'll do with them. Isa has already thrown the bum out. If she's arrested, I wonder who in Vega would defend her. The way things are handled in our tns, it might even be Gus (not).

I agree that Gus loved/loves Isa. For an affair to go on for a whole year, I agree with you that it sounds like the Madonna/Whore thing, which IMHO includes the greedy/selfish thing.

I just don't know if I want Milena to prevail and really sock-it-to Gus or have her punished or eliminated (the latter would make for a more interesting development).

So, the "dancers" can't be located and the website no longer exists. That points more and more in the direction of Alan setting up his cousin.

Thanks, Jardinera. Love the recap. Everybody has cited my favorite lines, but here's one more: Ale gives Ric a 200 peso bill (about $11) for his services. He takes it as a good luck charm--no doubt to take its place next to her garter belt.

I bet he will. Ric’s a little kinky, but that's alright by me. ;>

Enjoyed all the discussion. Justice is sure swift in Mexico. Everybody's cases whizz on by, but poor Carlos [not!] is still stuck behind bars and Leo has not a bit of evidence to prove his case.

I vote the young, dreamy-eyed nurse is legit. He's not fawning over Carmen and is very low-keyed with his care, not pushy. I remember when Groucho Marx's young female companion was sued by his adult children. Marx's comedian buddies testified in her favor that she took good care of him, unlike his kids, and deserved whatever money he left for her.

Even if the nurse's objective in marrying Virginia is less then noble, it's still better for Virginia to live a dreamy life with a gorgeous blue eyed hunk for as long as her failing health will allow her than to be declared incompetent and stashed unceremoniously in a nursing home while her family pilfers her entire fortune. Also, I think in a way she is protected now, since the details of her marriage to this young hunk are known to the authorities and to her family. He will not be able now to get rid of her without it being noticed and if he is not stupid, he should understand that the moment his wife kicks the bucket, her family will do everything possible to fight him over the inheritance and, thus, anything even remotely iffy will be noticed and reported to the police.

Irene

Yeah Alan the parasite did it. And he
Shut down the shop, and gave the hookers enough $$ to disappear. Skunk!
And that is why he is not trying hard to help. Y'all see he took over the business and then had the money transferred into his account whatever. The guy's a jerk.

Tonight should be real interesting.

Hey, maybe that's why Allen had the money transfer to his account so he can have enough money to pay the hookers to get away from there. Smart skunk! And he doesn't deserve the correct spelling of his name.
