Por Amar Sin Ley, 3/20/18 Chapter 12: Of Confidence and Confidants

Gustavo's familial "feasting" is interrupted by his extracurricular entanglement's phone call.  Gus exits to the kitchen to reprimand her for calling.

Next morning Roberto wakes up next to another female conquest who might be the gal friend from the office party--or not.  (I couldn't capture the small talk as he is getting dressed.)  She'll call him; he had a lovely rack roll and so did she.

Over at Ricardo's, Leonardo is checking out the coffee table books and finds the nicknack book which he opens.  First thing he sees is Alejandra's garter [liga de mujer].  "--Funny thing for you to have locked away in here."  Ric says he found it on the ground during Alejandra's cancelled wedding when she got out of his car.   Leo cracks back that he hopes it becomes a good luck charm for him.  They joke about Leo fixing Carlos's case to see he doesn't get out of jail for the next twenty years to leave the way free for Ric to make his conquest of Ale.

Ale, meanwhile, meets Virginia and determines for herself that the woman is sane and will defend her against Ginny's greedy daughter and SIL (son-in-law), and her nephew the doctor who has also got something to gain by being in cahoots with the other two.  Ginny says have her examined by any physician but him.  They'll declare her in perfect mental condition.  "--My kids are evil.  Be prepared for anything and everything."  Fermin, the male nurse and companion has been with her for the past five years.  He's also assisted her in getting her health back, which in this case is shown to be her ability to balance and walk again.  She wants to make certain that he's repaid in kind for his attention to her.

At Vega Law Offices, Paula arrives at Ric's office with a gift for helping out with getting the grave robbing charges dropped before the ex-hubby (Ale's papa) found out.  He refuses her paying back the fine he paid for her and her friends.  He cannot take it since he's not allowed to take cases outside the firm which this would be considered.  So it will be their secret.   She takes time to add that unlike Carlos, she really likes Ric and sees him as a trustworthy type--the opposite of Carlos who cheated on her daughter.  Ok, so now he's got Mama on his side.....

Rob stops in at Victoria's office.  She remarks on the sunglasses indoors.  "--Must've been one mellovahellova night!"  Rob is hung over and swears off doing any drinking, partying and womanizing this weekend.  She smirks.  "--Even you don't believe that!"  He wants her to call him again.  She's the cure for him to learn to behave well.  He tries kissing her hand and she pulls away from him.  They head off to the jail to "talk" with Dario the Devil.

Gus gets a visit from the client in the child support case he just won against the old man and his lazy, good-for-nothing son.  She shows her gratitude with a free enchilada and a drawing from the little boy.  FF>>FF>>

After Paula leaves, Ginny's daughter and SIL arrive.  Ric scolds them for lying to him and says he's met her mama and their cousin, the doctor, and realizes that he as well as they have something to gain by declaring her mentally unfit.  He refuses to continue on with their case and what's more, he's given her the name of an excellent attorney to take Ginny's case against them.  He pretty much kicks them out the door after that.

Down at the jailhouse, Vicki has a not-so-friendly"chat" with Dario who at first says it was and accident, and then who gripes that if Vicki'd just kept her mouth shut none of this would have happened and his wife would be alive.  "--The only mistake Rocio ever made was putting herself in the hands of a man like you!"  Vicki tells him to shut his pretext-spewing pie-hole.  She'll see him locked away and rotting forever behind bars so her friend can rest in peace if it's the last thing she ever does!!  (Viewerville notes the lack of sympathy and/or conscience dear ol' Dario shows over his wife's untimely passing.)  "--Get out!" he hisses back at her.

Ale arrives back in the office and she gives Ric her impression of Ginny.  They concur on Ginny's state of mind and he informs her that's why he's refusing to take her children's side in this and refused to take the case.

Over lunch, Rob tells Vicki he wishes Leo would listen to him and forgive him.  "--After you slept with his fiancee???  Are you serious?" Rob tells her his side of what happened with Ana Maria: they met in the hospital, exchanged phone numbers, and then she called him.  They went out and the rest is history. He insists that he really does have a heart and can feel guilt over a situation like that.  Leo and he have been life-long friends.  He wants to make it up to him somehow.

Ric visits his step-children at Elena's.  She comes down dressed to the nines with a black little something that has a neckline that really should be considered a belly-line.....it is a gorgeous design but looks as if it was a first run of Fredericks of Frollicwood.   AND, Elena makes certain to flaunt her female assets. He notes this and seems happily rid of her once she's out the door.

The next day, Leo arrives at his office only to find balloons and flowers and a note asking for forgiveness from Rob.  Leo finally breaks into laughter.

That night, Ric's stepson asks his daddy to forgive his mother.  Everyone can make a mistake, right?  They really miss him at home.  FF>>FF>>

Juan arrives home and Mama wants him to meet a nice girl to date/marry and give her grandchildren.  FF>>FF>>

Ale comes home and scold her mother for the crazy thing she did at the cemetery and then for letting Ric pay the fine for them. Paula suggests that it makes Ale mad because she's interested in Ric.  She disagrees and says it's because he invited her to join the firm and because she has to work with him. FF>>FF>>

Leticia and Olivia are staying late at the office working on a family case of child beating.  Oli wants to bring in a criminal lawyer.  Letti says to get Rob; Oli says no, she wants Leo.

Speaking of Leo, he goes into Rob's office and says what's with the flowers, chocolates and toy bear?  Couldn't you at least have offered me whiskey?  Rob makes a note of it.  Leo says, naw, if he's going to drink it better be worth the effort.  Make it at least an 18 year old bottle and leaves.  Rob calls Carmen and says get him a bottle of the most expensive 18 year old (scotch?).

Gus and family discuss his son's upcoming birthday party.  FF>>FF>>

Oli goes into Leo's office with her files and sees the flowers and such; she's overawed.  Leo apologizes for his rude behavior towards her and has her take a rose.  She says she understood he was going through a bad time of it all.  No problemo.  She mentions the case and he agrees to take it.  She needs to put the child-beating dad behind bars and give custody to the mother.  All pro bono.

Elena comes home sozzled.  It's been a long time since she's had so much fun.  Suddenly she becomes serious and asks Ric who's ready to leave if he doesn't remember when they dated and had that kind of fun and how they used to make love???  He pushes her away gently but firmly.  It's time for her to go to bed.  She gets him to help her and carry her up the stairs to her bed room.  He turns her pleadings down.  Rest and sleep.  He's going home.

Next morning when Leo enters his office all the flowers and chocolates are gone.  Instead he finds a gift boxed bottle of expensive booze.  On the other side of the firm's offices, in Oli's office are a ton of roses, the bear and the candy.  Vicki walks in and asks what's up.  Oli believes it was a gift from Leo and that deep down he has taken a liking to her and this is why she's got all the goodies now.  Vicki isn't certain Oli hasn't gotten the wrong idea somehow.

Leo brings in two glasses of the whiskey to Rob's office and they agree never to mention the subject of AM again.  They both drink to that then share a bro-hug.  All is forgiven.

Across the hall, Ric and Gus are discussing Ric's problems with the kids not adjusting and Elena's careless attitude towards them and reckless attitude towards him.  Gus suggests  ex-family therapy.  Gus invites Ric's kids to his son's birthday party for a bit of distraction and fun.  However, Ric's still disturbed over Elena's actions and that the kids must go through a rough patch because of him.  (Guilt pangs?)

Ale discusses the divorce proceedings for Ric's ex-girlfriend with her.  She wants it done as quickly as possible.  Why?  X-Gal de Mariana wants to re-establish her relationship with Ricardo.  He's a fabulous guy and great between the sheets.  X-Gal simply cannot understand what Elena was thinking to run around on Ric like she did.  Ale looks puzzled.  "--What??  Excuse me?"  "--What?  Didn't you know?  Ric is divorced."  (Wellllll now.  That's a horse of a different color!)

Rob invites Vicki out to dinner to celebrate her giving him such good advice about Leo because Leo has now forgiven him.  She accepts, but tells him to calm down.  It is only a meal!

Back at Ale's desk, X-Gal asks Ale to give Ric a message that she will call him and sends many, many kisses his way.  They part all kissies and hugs.  Ale's smiling as Carmen walks in.  Why so cheerful?  "--I've learned something that has changed my entire take on things."  (Guess she feels like a prudish old fool like her great grandma, after all.)

Ric enters Leo's office and notices the expensive booze.  He explains that Rob and he have made their peace;Ric and Leo share a trago and next discuss Leo's progress with Carlos's case.  It's going to be a big, long as and he'll probably need Rob to assist.  As there's no other suspects but Carlos, they're going to have to expend some funds and time investigating so they can find the actual murderer.

Speaking of Carlos, Al and he are visiting at the jail again.  Carlos is going crazy being couped up in the jail.  Leo's taken his case, says Al, so why all the angst?  Carlos says cuz he's innocent!  All replies in a matter of fact manner.  "--Yes, I know."  (Methinks he really DOES know this.)  The other reason for his angst is that he's unable to see Ale.  She hasn't come recently.  He needs to get out on bail...right?  Can't Al help with that?

When Ric arrives back in his office, Ale smiles and kids him about the message Mariana left for Ric.  "--Call her and oh, she sends you many, many kisses."  Ale says she is grateful for what Ric did to aid her mother, not to mention for having asked her to join the firm; to show her gratefulness, what do you think?  She's inviting him out to eat.  Her treat.  She flashes those dimples at him and he's a goner......

Jardinera: "Familial feasting" ????

Sure, Steve: turkey and greenbeans beats tacky tacos, right?

Thanks Jardinera. First what X-Gal in her right mind would let it slip to a younger equally attractive (maybe single, but really irrelevant for this crowd) office mate that he is good with the undercover work? That's the kinda shit you girls Never Ever Ever let slip to a potential mating competitor. You only tell Mother's and maybe Aunts or EXTREMELY HAPPILY MARRIED girlfriends that. Ay Yi Yi. what's she thinking? Not to mention the other 'He's Single' bombshell. X-Gal just painted a target on Ricky's boxers.

Oli is delusional. How did this gal get through college? Does she have any warrants?

Red roses for a pissed off Buddy? Hmmmm well it worked. I swear Oli saw all that and in her mind Leo had gotten them all for her but had not gotten around to giving her that room full of stuff yet.

Clever title Jardinera, and I love your wild and wicked way with words:
rack toll
mellohellova night
Fredericks of Frolicwood and
pretext-spewing-piehole

Pure Jardinera!

I actually liked the scene between Gustavo and his poor but noble mother and son, because it showed a different side of the lawyer. A much more honorable side. He was working pro bono (an important PSA on that possibility for folks of limited means) and I thought he was very tender and caring with the young boy. As he is with his own son at home (when he IS home). So that fleshed out his character a little for me, and made him seem less one-dimensional. Don't know if the equally unfaithful Benjamin has any likable traits. I doubt it.

And boy, yes, what a blunder, letting Alejandra know that not only is Ricardo getting divorced, but that he's an ace in bed. Now here's my language question:

My Spanish subtitles for that info said "es un avión en la cama" Sure can't find that one in my dictionary! Maybe the closed caption person flubbed it but then...what DID she say? Oh well.

Interesting way of resolving the Leonardo/Roberto feud. Roberto follows Victoria's advice on begging forgiveness as he usually does, so he fills Leonardo's room with flowers, chocolate and a stuffed bear. So ridiculous and inappropriate it makes Leo laugh and bingo! the old buds are bros again. Fiancée forgotten. Friendship restored. Male bonding more important than romantic love? That often seems to be the case in these stories. Could be true. Romance is temporary. Friendship is forever.

Anyway, loved the recap. And if anybody knows what Ricardo's former squeeze said, please enlighten me. I don't think the word was "avión" Help! those lucky few who are bilingual.

Thanks, Jardinera. Fab job.

First what X-Gal in her right mind would let it slip to a younger equally attractive (maybe single, but really irrelevant for this crowd) office mate that he is good with the undercover work?

Kirby, ITA. No girl in her right mind would let that slip to even extremely happily married girlfriends. It's like telling folks you got a private Fort Knox in your house. Who wouldn't be tempted to check it out? But I guess Viewerville had to know somehow that Ric wasn't cheated on because he lacks luv skillz.

At last, Ale knows Ricardo is divorced! That sure did perk her up.

Oh no, there's no stopping Oli chasing Leo now. Leo, you should've divided the the flowers among all the women in the office. You have nobody to blame but yourself for Oli hanging on.

Would it have been so wrong for Ric to leave Elena drunk on the couch? Why take off her shoes, carry her upstairs, and give her a chance at pawing him?

Yes, the word was "avión" (airplane) ... Él es un avión en la cama... He is an airplane in bed ... as graphic as it sound.

JudyB, I just replayed the ex-girlfriend scene and she did say "avión" en la cama. No idea what the English equivalent of that is.

Strikes me as a very strang “figurative “ expression. Generally women don’t like men who super speedy in lovemaking.
JudyB

Jar--Yes, pure Jardinera. Too bad the roses weren't for you. You deserved them. Excellent recap.

Kirby--I wouldn't tell my mother nor my aunts--TMI. Besties? Yes--taking the risk.

Love the use of an avion en la cama--coming in for a landing. Frankly, though, I see Roberto being a Boeing 727 before Ric.

Niecie--Ric is very concerned about the effect Elena's behavior is making on the children. Yet, by taking her upstairs, he's enabling her. I don't think he wanted the kids to find her like that. Carrying her up reminded me so much of Alex carrying Maria Jose upstairs in Sortie, but what a different relationship that was.....I wonder if Ale and Ric will be able to compete.

Maybe she was thinking about when you hit some turbulence, "Fasten Your seatbelt, it is gonna be a wild ride' !

Neicie: ' is divorced! That sure did perk her up.' Made her Hungry too.

tquir--Thanks for the confirmation on avion!

Where or what is the name of that lovely river next to you on your Google page? Inquiring minds wish to know, if you wish to share.

Anita, I think is Vltava (Moldova River) in Prague, I was there in 2012 on vacation, and we visit others cities with some similarities, so... I'm only 95% sure.

Great stuff, Jardinera.

I got nervous on Ricardo's behalf during that whole scene when he carried Elena up the stairs. Does anyone else think she faked being sloshed and that this was an attempt at entrapment?

Mariana probably doesn't see Alejandra as competition. I don't know what is usual in the real world in Mexican offices but I am not ancient and I'm old-fashioned enough to think that hanky panky in the office is a serious mistake 99% of the time. Or is it that she sees Alejandra as a "Betty La Fea" by comparison to herself? So far the evidence of that is purely speculative.

Roberto's very expensive apology speaks to his sense of humor. I thought it amusing. But it worked.

Isabel needs a bit of a makeover. She needs to do something better with her hair; the color isn't wonderful as it is. She needs to shake Gustavo up somewhat before Milena pulls any tricks. But we know she will.

Thanks Jardinera

Finally Ale knows Ricky is divorced. I never expected Mariana would be the one to break it down for her. Her face when Mariana told her Ricky was a beast in bed, priceless. I thought she'd have noticed that he doesn't have a wedding band on his finger though.

Oli keeps getting her hopes up with Leo who obviously is not the least bit interested in anything other than friendship with her. She needs to get her head out of the clouds pronto.

BTW, regarding the Casketeers from Monday's episode, here is a question on Quora relating to this situation. I thought you'd all find it interesting.

tquir--Thank you. It goes on my list of places to visit. One of the first pieces of classical music that I heard and played over and over on my 45-disc phonograph was Smetena's Die Moldau/Ma Vlast. Ah, those were the days....one symphony came in a square box the size of a dictionary.

Ava--not every married man wears a wedding ring, for whatever reason. However, he should have removed any and all photos of Elena from his office gallery--or maybe he did and Ale didn't notice. Anyway, it's out in the open now. I hope Ale doesn't go too fast. Letty will surely notice, though. She and Elena will form a posse to separate them.

"She and Elena will form a posse to separate them."
Shitzoli I forgot those two are in the same coven.

Yup I thought she (El)regained her equilibrium a bit when it was time to strike, but then chalked it up to my imagination.

Legal eagle Ale didn't notice that Elena is in none of the photos.

Carlos is going batty in jail and -- too bad, so sad -- can't stand that Ale hasn't visited lately. As crummy as he is cheating on the wedding eve, I do think he loves her.

Niecie--It's love x 10, plus a little arrogance and obsession, but that's just my take. I think he was deluding himself (or hoping, maybe) when he told Leo how much he and Ale love each other.

Urban, I checked the Quora link. Very interesting. Obviously there is no protocol for how to act or react. It seems that if the live partner knows about the lover it's a different situation than if it's revealed at the funeral. In our case, the kids have known about Lou for a long time. They created a ruckus that could have been avoided, but (in the real world) that is what all the mourners will remember.

Anita, I'm thinking Carlos was hoping that line to Leo about him and Ale loving each other would get back to Ricardo. Carlos has got to notice that Ale has avoided kissing him and has to be asked for a hug every time she visited.

Thanks for the Quora link Urban, very intriguing answers

You're right Anita, most men don't usually wear wedding rings and maybe Ricky is one of them that's why Ale never paid attention to that if she ever noticed or.

I believe Carlos loves Ale but it's that kind of love that slowly grows into an obsession

Intriguing answers...and heartbreaking answers on the Quora link. Shows you how pain there is when men cheat on their wives. No matter "how great their love", other people are deeply hurt by such a betrayal...the wife, and the children.

Niecie and Ava--Got it. Carlos is all about strategy, so saying something that he hopes will get back to Ric is very plausible. I'm sure he's noticed that Ale is a little cool toward him now. He has to live with her expressed feelings of betrayal. Since poor Carlos has nothing else to think about in prison, his love for Ale is expanding into fantasyland as well as becoming an obsession.

JudyB....and there is pain also when the partners roles are reversed and it is the wife who has cheated on the husband. However, the women usually outlive the men.....

While all of you are thinking about this, I was really surprised how interested Ali's Mom Paula was in Ricardo,(on Ali's behalf) given the general misinformation that he was a Married Coworker. Every time he showed up or even his name without him there with it, Paula flipped into MIL mode. ?Que?

Given Ali's education youth, and looks, she is not exactly staring old maidhood in the face yet. And she certainly does not appear desperate like Oli(ve Oil).

Anita, yes...heartbreak goes both ways. But those women outlive the men...if the scorned husband doesn't kill them! But the stories on the Quora (that I read anyway) all concerned men with mistresses or concubines.

Ali's mom has been married four times, right? My guess is somewhere along the line, she's poached another woman's husband. When Ale told her (mistakenly) that Ricardo was married, it didn't seem to phase mom a bit.

Yay, snow all shoveled.

Makes sense Neicie. Sort of what I suspected, but I was giving this new "Nice" Azela the benefit of the doubt. :-)

Thank you Jardinera654. Lovely recap. I Love the Dempled ones joy of finally
Discovering that hunky lawyer guy is
D E V O R C E !)))))))))))))))))))))))
Now she's gonna have to fight to get
Him. And now let the fun begin.

You northerners are gonna have a love affair with the snow shovel. Just stay Safe and warm.
