Por Amar Sin Ley, 3/19/18 Chapter 11 Lunes: Girlfriends

Chapter 11: Girlfriends

Previously on D.F. Law:

  • Victoria had finished greeting Alejandra when Leticia came in and accused Alejandra of taking what was rightfully hers. Olivia pointed out to Leticia that Alonso was satisfied with her work only to get the response that “This is because everything is always done your way.”

  • Alejandra said that whenever one begins somewhere new they need to learn the ways of the company and Roberto promised to be helpful if needed. Victoria and Olivia said a few welcoming remarks about hoping she would be happy there and Leticia walked off with “Yes, I hope so.” Her tone said otherwise.
  • Leonardo asked Carlos to explain what happened. He described the events of that evening, explaining that Alan had called the “dancers.” He continued to describe that the others had left him alone with Patricia and that he had ended up in bed with her. Leonardo asked about drugs, violence, and whether he had used protection and what happened after the sex. He told him that nothing happened; they had fallen asleep He described waking up in the morning and leaving a note propped up against the champagne bottle before leaving. Patricia looked asleep. He said that before he left he requested breakfast and a rose from room service. It was to thank her for the night before. He thought she would leave in her own time.
  • Ricardo arrived at the office to find Alejandra already at work. She explained that Olivia had showed her around, explained a few things, introduced her to a few colleagues. She liked the office and the neighborhood. He said he was frequently in early and that this was the best part of his day.
  • Carlos explained that he left the room, took the elevator to the parking garage, was asked if all was well, and someone got his car for him. He asked someone to get a cab for the girl when she left the room. Then he went home, changed his clothes, and went to the church. This all sounded strange to Leonardo, who asked about Alan's involvement with the reports and witnesses. There were witnesses who said he was left alone with the girl. Leonardo looked at the documents and said that the times did not match the report. Carlos swore he was innocent. Leonardo said that nobody accused him and that it wouldn't make sense for him to commit a murder just before his wedding. He believed him and said he would take his case. Carlos thanked him and shook his hand.
  • After a few semi-flirtatious looks at each other, Ricardo and Alejandra mentioned the Perez custody case. Ricardo then told her he was going to fill her in on another case he thought she had recommended her for. He then handed her the file about Virginia, saaying that there were things he could not tell her for ethical reasons. They were not going to oppose each other because he wanted them to do what was right.
  • Carlos made a show of gratitude. Leonardo told him that Alonso didn't allow anyone to just take on cases on their own, so he would have to tell him the details. He would get this investigated. Carlos went on about helping his (lawyer) fiancée with this, saying “You don't know how much we love each other.” This must be the real reason he wanted Leonardo on the case.
  • Olivia, Victoria, and Roberto talked in the coffee lounge about Alejandra. All got good vibes upon meeting her and Roberto mentioned hearing that she was an excellent lawyer. Olivia hoped that Leticia would get over her tantrum about this and Roberto mentioned that according to Benjamín she wanted to leave and he seemed the most worried about that. Olivia wondered why, since he was married. She asked if there was anything going on between them and the other two simultaneously said “Ay, Olivia!” followed by Roberto pointing out their “connexion” and saying to Olivia “What world are you living in?” Victoria excused herself and Olivia asked about Leonardo. Roberto pointed out that he handled the Mendez affair appropriately but that their differences are not resolved. The one thing he did know was that Leonardo was done with Ana Maria.
  • Leticia went into Benjamín's office to tell him it would be better for her to leave. He got her to change her mind, telling her to leave it to him. Possible coffee break activity that had nothing to do with coffee.
  • Ricardo and Alejandra were finishing their conversation when Carmen came in to tell Ricardo that someone wanted to see him. It was Mariana, Ricardo's old girlfriend, who wanted him to handle her divorce. Alejandra made an effort to not pay attention but she obviously didn't like what she was listening to as Mariana said “There is no better lawyer than you.” However, he recommended Alejandra take this case because Mariana and her husband (Raúl) were married in Las Vegas. Mariana was alright with that and gave Alejandra her business card. They would meet to discuss the case the next morning. She was a bit too flirtatious with Ricardo in front of Alejandra before walking out and Ricardo explained to Alejandra that they knew each other for a very long time.
  • Virginia was on her lawn with Fermin, who was getting her out of the wheelchair to walk. The objective was to get her back on her feet. She told him she would need all her strength for the impending battle with her children. She was sure they were just waiting for her to die so they could get her money.
  • Paula, Alicia, and Lourdes drove through the cemetery gates, bribing the gatekeeper by pre-arrangement. They said they would not take long. Paula looked for her cell phone as they got out of the car.
  • Olivia ignored all advice to leave Leonardo alone and stopped in his office before leaving for the night to check up on him. He was a little annoyed, telling her he had a lot of work to do and had no time for this. She said she would help him as he escorted her out.
  • The Ladies in Black went to the grave to open it with the help of the man they bribed and one other.
  • Roberto stopped at Leonardo's office but he didn't want to talk to him. He got up from his desk to emphasize the point, closing the door before Roberto could enter. Victoria was also outside saying “I didn't want to say 'I told you so,' but... I told you so.” She told him that his entire manner with women got him into this jam despite him not knowing that he was treading on private property (as it were). They argued this a little before going back to their offices.
  • The coffin was pulled out and the women opened it. Lourdes touched the dead man's hands and apologized for not having been with him in his last moments because his children had prevented her doing so. She took off the ring he had given her, laid it on his chest, and cried some more. A policeman walked by and saw that the gate was unchained. He saw the white SUV and went inside. He noted that the car was not occupied, then looked at the license plate.
  • Ricardo and Alejandra were still working and all seemed to be well. He told her it was a pleasuare working with her and they decided to call it a night. He asked her if she would like to grab a bite with him and she declined. She also declined drinks and then a lunch date for the next day. When is she going to find out he's divorced?
  • Paula and Alicia tried to get Lourdes to get up and leave but she wouldn't. Finally the cop approached them. He wasn't willing to listen to any explanations and told them they were under arrest for desecrating a grave. He started to direct them out.
  • Ricardo and Leonardo dined on tacos at Ricardo's place and talked about Alejandra. Ricardo told him that she had turned down his invitations to go out and he said that Alejandra was being sensible in view of her recent experience. After all her fiance is under arrest and seems to still be in love with her. Ricardo took notice of that.
  • At the police station Paula invoked her right to a phone call, so she called Ricardo. She explained what happened and he said he would be right there. He asked Leonardo how to handle this situation.
  • Alejandra arrived home with some groceries and the maid told her that her mother was out with her friends. She handed her a list of messages regarding the return of the wedding gifts.
  • A plainclothes desk clerk told the three ladies that they were likely to get three to six months for what they did. Lourdes begged him to let the other two go because she was the only guilty party and they were just accompanying her. Paula asked to be allowed to call her daughter and she stepped away to do so. She told her that they were at the twenty-third precinct. As soon as she ended the call the three were led to a cell.
  • Benjamín and Leticia were having drinks and talking about Alejandra. We flies on the wall are wondering what this fool tells his wife about all his late hours.
  • Ricardo came to the station and talked to the bearded clerk. He heard the accusation and then answered that desecrating a grave is only when there was an act of necrophilia, theft, or destruction. None of these applied. The clerk believed him and excused himself. After he left his desk Alejandra arrived. Ricardo explained the reason for his presence, which made Alejandra think that her mother and her friends had lost their minds. However, Ricardo had gotten there in time before all the paperwork had been done. The clerk came back telling him that it was going to be a fine or thirty days. Alejandra tried to take this over but Ricardo said “Your mother and her friends are my clients; I'll take care of this.” He went to the cell to talk to the ladies. He would get them out once the papers had been done and the fine paid. Paula was embarrassed to hear that Alejandra was also there and didn't want to face her. However, Ricardo told her not to worry because Alejandra was concerned. He would get them out as soon as he could. He went to deal with that while Paula told the other women in the cell she would giving them his business card.
  • Juan ate a late dinner with his mother as he handed her his paycheck. He told her about the Mendez case that had involved all the male lawyers of Vega & Associates. She encouraged him to go to that firm to see about getting hired.
  • Roberto was up to his usual extra-curricular activities at the club. He got himself invited to a lady's chambers. Victoria called his cell and obviously heard the background music. She had wanted to see him that evening and changed her mind. She told him she would see him in the morning at the office.
  • Alejandra was embarrassed at this situation and she scolded the ladies over this and getting Ricardo involved. Lourdes begged her not to blame her mother “It was all my fault,” she said. However, Ricardo didn't mind helping out and they all left the police station.
  • Olivia was watching television, yelling at the characters when her phone rang. Victoria scolded her at first about watching sad movies, but then admitted she was a bit out of it herself. Olivia was very understanding in view of Rocio's death and suggested she come over so they can make dinner and hang out. Victoria almot declined but changed her mind and Olivia said she would be right over.
  • Alejandra was still peeved when they got home. Paula suggested they have something to eat, but Ricardo declined her invitation to join them because he had to be at the office early the next day. Alicia told Ricardo he was a great lawyer and she was going to recommend him to all her friends. Lourdes said that she did this for love, etc. [We know that sob story and we don't need to hear it again.] When Ricardo finally left Alejandra told Paula they had to talk.
  • Gustavo dined with his family but Milena called his cell. He told Isabel that the call was a client. She said he should answer because it could be important.

Good morning UA and Patio. Got a big kick out of this line"

. Possible coffee break activity that had nothing to do with coffee.

So much conveyed in so few words!

Now am I bad for finding the whole Lourdes'n Pals story revolting and ludicrous?

Yes, I'm sorry her middle-aged fiancé died and she was not able to see him in the hospital nor "say good-bye" at the velorio. But she could have had a private service at home in his memory (and did). To insist on going and causing a scene at the funeral home and then digging up the grave and opening the casket is insanity. It is neither touching nor funny. Putting the ring in with the corpse is worth this kind of desecration!? I fail to see the point. And this lovely actress deserves a better written role.

But thoroughly enjoyed the wry, tongue-in-cheek recap. Thanks Urban.

Thanks Urtban, I, for one, just thoroughly enjoyed the blubbering, blatherin, bawling, bumbling Bimbos in the jail with the other hookers. And of course Johnny on the Spot Ricky is there along wish his future ex girlfriend to extricate her Mama and the other two of the 'Three Casketeers'. If Mexico had the Baker act they would have used it on Lordy(shut up) last night.

Judy, no one is going to fault you for not liking that whole abortion last night, and you are a far classier act than me, as I was hee-hawing the whole way. I was waiting for Lordy (shut up) to try to crawl in with him and tell the girls to shut the top.

I'm still laughing.

Thanks Urban
The whole scenes of Paula and her girlfriends were funny.I especially enjoyed Paula telling Ricardo to just get her friends out and leave her there after he told her Alejandra had arrived. She also seemed to be quite comfortable in that cell already making some other friends.

Ava, exact---leee. Gal has been married seventeen times, (actually 4, I think)so how different is she really from her new friends, it's just paperwork. And Lordy(shutup) was a mistress for decades. I don't know much about the blonde. They made friends quickly.

Thanks, Judy.

I agree about the grave. I don't think we have all the information about Lourdes' relationship with Joaquin but if she was The Other Woman prior to the death of the man's wife she failed to realize that possibly being left out of the family grieving process is a consequence of that. This is where Leticia and Milena could end up someday. And you are right; Lourdes Munguia deserved better than this throughout her career.

Kirby, love "Casketeers"! Good one!

Welcome, Ava. Glad to see you're enjoying this series. We always love getting new participants here.

I have come to agree with everyone who said so far that Carlos didn't murder the prostitute. However, that does not exclude the possibility that he is not a good person. We all have bad vibes about his practice. He wanted Leonardo because he knows Leo's rep for only defending people he thinks are innocent while he will take on any client who pays the big fees.

I'm going out shortly so I may not have any more comments until tonight.

Thanks for the great rundown. I missed a few sentences, so again, it's goot to get those areas filled in!

I liked the quip about the coffee break where they're not exactly having coffee, myself. ITA I've had enough of La Llorona de Lourdes. The actress does deserve a better role. Let's see if Lamenting Lourdes gets named in his will. If she doesn't then we'll know the real type of relationship it was for him vs. what he told her.

I thought I heard Ale call Paula's friends her aunts. I wondered if it was just a name out of affection or for real.

Thanks, Urban.

Ava, welcome. I got a kick out of Paula telling Ricardo to just leave her there too rather than face the wrath of her daughter. :D

I knew the ladies would have a story, but, goodness, not this. Ricardo was cute though being so happy to rescue the ladies so he could be in Alejandra's orbit again.

I read a book of interviews with top U.S. trial lawyers some years ago. Innocence or guilt was not the deal breaker for them in taking on a case. Instead a client who lies to them was the deal breaker. To get Alejandra to marry him (almost), I'm guessing Carlos must've taken on some virtuous cases and shown ethical behavior, at least sometimes.

I think Ale called Lourdes & Alicia her "aunts" out of affection. I was rollin' seeing Paula in the cell making friends with the other jailbirds! LOL

And scheming on Ricardo & Ale!

I can't feel sorry for Olivia getting dissed by Leonardo, especially after being told to leave the man alone. But Olivia seems to be a good friend to all.

Hopefully Olivia, Victoria and Roberto will look out for Alejandra because those 3 saw first hand how nasty Leticia was to Alejandra.

I'm betting Alan killed the hooker. As Leonardo said, why would Carlos kill somebody hours before his wedding?

Mariana was a little too over the top. You allegedly haven't seen this man in years but you're glomming all over him like slime? Ok girl, sit down.

Well, now that I've seen the episode, I do understand that the Cemetery Caper was supposed to be funny and light-hearted in a macabre sort of way. Just more proof that I don't get Latino humor. But I agree with Anon207 that Alejandra calling the gals her "tias" was a term of affection, exasperated affection in this case. I did find her annoyance with her mom funny (very true to life) and Mom's delight in pulling Ricardo into the mix with her daughter also funny (and true to life).

But Lord have mercy, please no more whining and breastbeating from Lourdes. Enough already. Basta ya!

Judy Bee :-)

Paula even offered Ricardo's services to her new cellmate friend,LOL.

Thanks again Urban,I'm more than happy to be here

Hi Urban. The adventures of DF LAW.
And you cover them well.
Three weeping sisters in black. Now is
That cemetery the kind where everyone
Is on Top in a vault? Cuz it seemed re al easy to get that coffin open. And
Yuck, his hands were turning black and
Wasn't there a stinch? I see no real
Sincable reason for her to do what she
Did. If it were me I'd be like "baby I
I love you,but no touchin dead people.
That was comic relief for the night.
Those 3 stooges in black are really so
Silly.

And why are they dragging out ale not
Knowing that Ricky is not hitched to
The Ol ball-n-chain anymore? She gonna
Need to be protected from the fiance
From hell. When he gets out of lockup.

Olivia watching a tearjerking telenova
With a Big bowl of popcorn. That's what
She needs in that popcorn, more salt,
From her tears.Lol.

Ale is gonna have to tell Carlos that it's over between them cuz if she dont
He is gonna put himself into her life
And thinks he still has a chance with
Her. And he's gonna be crazy with it.
Now while I don't want him in jail for a Crime he didn't do,I don't him to be gettin Between what will be a beautius life For ale and Ricky. I love it when he Brings out the flash in those cute Demples.
Crazy ex in Lockup don't do that for her.

Thank Urban.

Y'all stay safe if you're in line for these Storms. All the first coast and North East Georgia is under severe thunder Storm and tornado warning.

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING PATIO!

I didn't feel sorry for the three stooges at all last night. Lourdes proved she was selfish: she had to say goodbye on her specific terms. She not only disrespected the decision made by her lover's kids, she disrespected the deceased body too. WTH. Who opens a grave? She couldn't just say goodbye at his grave? I feel like this wasn't just about not saying goodbye in person to Joaquin, but also about her not letting the kids win. There's a reason that guy didnt marry her, she seems like a suffocating type of woman.

If Benjamin couldn't convince the partners to grant Leticia the senior lawyer position, what makes her think that he would be able to when he becomes a partner? She seriously thinks she's not lacking skills? She has a horrible personality that everyone became a witness of. Who would vote her in now? She needs to relearn workplace behavior.

I'm surprised Ricardo hasn't thought that Alejandra just doesn't know about his marital status. I understand why she's wary of him. It can easily be mistaken for something else.

I'm watching the rain here in the mid-Atlantic. No snow--yet.

Urban, come back soon to where it's safe and warm. Thank you for the recap. Enjoyed the coffee break line, too. And I missed Roberto and Victoria chiding naive Oli regarding what was common knowledge in the office as to Benji's and Letty's real office relationship.

Mariana is still wearing the same exact hair-piece she wore as Amelia in Un Camino. I didn't find it becoming then, nor now. But that's beside the point. It IS fun to see who shows up next.

Coming in this late, there's nothing left to add and everything to agree with. I, too, thought the Three Casketeers (thanks, Kirby) caper went on far too long, but I guess it had a point--don't mess with the dead or Ricardo when he's on a roll. I half expected Joaquin to wave or it not to be Joaquin at all, so I guess the whole scene was for comic relief (and for me it was a relief when it was over). I expect the three to commit more comic relief scenes in the future.

Can't wait for Sr. Perez to show up.......

Urban, thank you for a thorough and entertaining recap.
Kirby, I add my voice to the choir: your three casketeers was brilliant.
I have to add that grave desecration charges are the least of Lourdes' problems regarding the cemetery adventures of the three casketeers. In cases of grave desecration, the police notify the relatives of the deceased and these relatives can file a civil lawsuit that can yield quite a substantial compensation if the conditions are right.
Moreover, since these relatives hate Lourdes (and I can kind of understand them), the could easily accuse her of robbing the grave in addition to desecrating it and cause her all sorts of legal troubles.
In any case, Lourdes is not very bright to risk being imprisoned for a lengthy period of time and loose her fortune over five minutes with a decomposing body.

I got back an hour ago. It's supremely ironic that we're expecting a nor'easter just as we enter Spring. How crazy is that?

I brought bagels and flavored cream cheeses to a friend who is recovering from cancer treatments. Imagine these flavors: Cucumber Dill, Kalamata Olive, and Cinnamon-Walnut-Raisin. Then I picked up six boxes of Fancy Feast at Target for my babies.

Be prepared for a weekend article about this series and what must have really inspired it.

Urban, you didn't cross reference it for us, but were those flavors scattered among the three different items, or were they all Fancy Feast?

I'd eat Fancy Feast if it tasted like Cucumber Dill cream cheese. Sorry, your EAGLE will have to wait for something fresher (preferably with bones in it).

:-) Funny Girl

Target -- to my surprise -- had a special deal where they gave a $5 gift card per purchase of two boxes of Fancy Feast. So I now have a two and a half month supply.

Fortunately Carmen and Figaro have no interest in cream cheese. And the poppy seed bagels are covered with them so that eating one means you can't take a drug test for at least a week.

There was a show some years back called "girlfriends" they were zany
Broads, always into something stupid and they were very well dressed. One
Of the actresses is now in "Blask-ish"
On ABC. Ricky did seem to be enjoying
Himself last night helpin those three
Cougars out of the pit,uh grave they dove into.
