LADO – Lunes – Parte 1

We again see the scene with Tomás wanting to work in the neighbors’ yards for money. And we see Max look on at his wife and children, but a way up the street.

Andrés wife is still not thrilled to have these guests and a bit jealous about the raving about Eliza’s cooking. Andrés assures her of his love and that the three will leave soon.

In San Antonio Sofía and Alondra talk about both feeling bad about Joel having died. Sofía tells her that THEY will live and will be very happy.

Back in the torture warehouse Paula tries to get Márquez to talk about why he was doing the autopsy. [I can do without these torture scenes.]

While Sofía is in the shower Alondra falls down dancing and sees something inside a hot air register. She finds photos of the kidnapped girls. Sofía comes out, sees the photos, reads a note about las botellitas y podía atar cabos (put two and two together).

They take practically nothing with them, but when they open the front door an alarm sounds. Sofía tells Senator Slimy that they were just going to stretch their legs, but he insists they come back in to wait for the FBI.

The doorbell rings. He says it’s the FBI and goes to the door. She bashes him over the head and sees Ernesto on a monitor that shows who’s outside the gate. When Sofía tries to run SS comes to and tries to choke her. She knees him and he falls down the stairs. Sofía takes the money from his wallet, and she and Alondra go out the door and run down a convenient path beside the house.

I’m still not sure if Senator Slimy is the Texan. Wondering why SS hasn’t answered the door, Pastrana tells Ernesto that maybe the Texan could have received un pitazo (a heads up) and looked for a place to hide them. Ernesto: “Then why didn’t Cummings tell me?” [This exchange could mean that The Texan and Cummings are two different people or it could mean the opposite.]

SS comes to, drags himself to the control panel and opens the gate. He tells Ernesto that his wife knows everything. Pastrana runs out to search; but, of course, they don’t find her.

Max comes home, having not revealed himself to Eliza nor to his children. He tells the sitter watching Charlie to go home. And proceeds to tenderly play with his son.

SS tells Ernesto a woman called Eliza has the disc, and that this woman and Sofía have to die.

Patrick has the very much alive Joel in his apartment in San Antonio. He wonders how he got there. Patrick tells him he was shot and left to die in the desert. Like all heroic guys in telenovelas, he gets up from being gut shot and prepares to go find Sofía. Patrick tells him that Ernesto is here in San Antonio.

LADO – Lunes – Parte 2

Sofía cuts off Alondra’s hair in a public bathroom. She stares at her engagement ring and wedding ring. [Keep the diamond, Sofía!]

Eliza goes to look at an apartment.

Márquez is threatened with harm to his wife and kids. He agrees to call Joel, tell him he has the results of the autopsy, and that they have to meet in person for him to give the results.

Max is caressing his sleeping child when Jennifer comes back. She won’t accept Max’s word that he’s going to stay there for Charlie’s sake. She produces a document signing Eliza’s house over to her. She says she’ll sell it so there won’t be any place for Max to get away with his other family like her father did. [At this point I even like Paula more than I like Jennifer!]

After looking at the apartment, Eliza goes to see Steve. She gives him one of her wonderful cookies. Maybe Steve will be a love interest. Not sure what they’ll do about his wife and child, though!

Patrick figures out that Joel is in love with Sofía. We then see Sofía on the road with Alondra asleep in the backseat.

Paula has been racking her brain and figures out that the Eliza they are looking for is the woman who brought the sweets to the gala.

Eliza talks to Carmen over the phone. Carmen is singing the same song; Max is no good, and Eliza should come back to Puebla. Eliza convinces her to wire her the ahorros (savings) she has in Mexico.

We see some masked guys come into the bakery. They make a lot of noise searching for the disc, and Carmen comes out pointing a shotgun at them. Sadly, one of them comes from behind and hits her over the head.

Joel has arrived at the Governor’s Mansion. For a gut-shot guy, he sure is good at the old martial arts in getting the best of the guards and jumping over the fence.

We see Sofía on a bed with Alondra. I assume it’s a motel room. There’s a knock at the door; it’s Eliza. The two of them embrace and the door closes behind them.

Evil Vicentito turns on a gas canister before he leaves the bakery and a minute later it blows up.

Lado

Thanks VERY much, novelera, for another superb recap!

Wow, Sofia does seem to be especially skilled at kicking guys in the groin. IIRC, Senator Slimy (I love the name!) is the second baddie she's disabled that way. I wonder, though, about her escape. Without a minute's hesitation, she tells Alondra that they're leaving. As far as I could see, Sofia takes nothing with her except the money from SS's wallet and, probably, her wedding and engagement rings. She had gotten out of the shower and put on her clothes just a few minutes earlier. Does she really have her money, phone, passport, and other necessities?

Senator Slimy keeps insisting to Ernesto that Sofia has to die, and that Ernesto should have taken care of that at the start. Ernesto pushes back, saying he'll deal with Sofia, and that he needs her in order to maintain his image as Governor. Finally, they reach a deal: Ernesto will deal with Sofia and SS will have Eliza killed (since he sees both Sofia and Eliza as potentially very damaging). And Slimy apparently doesn't waste any time. Vicentito and Co. break into the bakery that same night, I think, looking for the DVD. They don't find it, but they call Eliza's mother "Eliza," and when they blow up the house with her in it, they assume they've gotten rid of Eliza and probably the DVD.

And yes, we seem to have seen once again the amazing curative powers given to telenovela heroes. Joel could barely put on his shirt, but a few hours later, he fights two bad guys at once and wins, and then he effortlessly climbs up and over the fence surrounding SS's house. My beanie filed a complaint.

"LADO":

Juanita: Not shocked the Syndicate whacked Eliza's Mommy. Just wait until they find out Eliza is in Los Angeles.

You want to bet Patrick is dirty ? There's something about this guy that's off.

2.) Juan's Thugs

3.) German

4.) Gasoline Dude

5.) The Smuggler

6.) Pastrana's Thugs

7.) Long-haired Pastrana Thug

8.) Dr. Marquez

9.) Eliza's Mommy

Lado

I have some hope that Carmen is alive. Stranger things have happened in telenovelas. What she told the thugs could have been true: that she had already called the police. They might have gotten her out before the explosion. Or maybe Adriana Barraza (Carmen) had another acting job and is truly gone from this one. I'm just surprised that a major Mexican actress was written out so quickly. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the movie Babel. I've seen her in two so far and she's been great in both: Dueño del Paraíso and Silvana sin Lana.

Lado. I also hope she is saved but Paula and the others continue to think, at least for a while that she is Eliza and is dead and the disc destroyed.

Lado

wonderful recap novelera, you're the best!

I too wonder about bumping off Carmen so early, they were looking for the cd but found the music collection, ha!, and how would you ever find a hidden cd in a house, so just in case they burned it down.

and how did Sofia ever escape, because she had to get her car.

I think they were implying that Sofia saw the pic of the kidnapped girl the mother came to her to find, hmm, there was also a flash drive in that box that Sofia pocketed.

I was thinking everyone would think that Joel was dead but I guess since Pastrana was knocked out and the other two dead, no one would know he was shot.

I wasn't sure where Joel was breaking into but it must be the gov's place as he was sure Ernesto had taken her back to Mexico, and Mexico is where Márquez is, Patrick was going to take care of the search in the U.S.

and Sofia must be in L.A.

ah Max, even if you didn't have another family, you need to get away from that woman.

Lado. I am totally turned off by Max. He continues to be a liar. He has no courage!
He needs to tell the truth and deal with it!
I hope Eliza finds someone new with integrity!
Bella

Enemigo

Samson gets away, hmm, but they are not showing the scenes clearly of him killing his parents, only the tattoo, could it have been Madre?

the psyche doc calls on Alex for a date, he passes but when he learns she passed off as his sister, he does go out, and finds out she has access to all files on the people she is interested in.

the Capitan wants his gun back, and with a knife to her throat Roxana tells, and my wallet? (Ochún had taken it) he says he knows who has it, and Roxana flees.

Tilapia says he'll surprise Roxana, and he does with a conjugal visit (set up by Alex to get them closer) and they have a night together, she tells of being sold by her mother, and then sold again, and again, till Federico.

Zoraida is not liking anything good happening to Roxana, she points Madre in the direction of a new girlfriend, maybe Roxana.

Lado

Thanks for the kind words about the recap. Among the things I love about this site is having crucial things I missed pointed out. Deb, I forgot about the flash drive Sofía found in the box with the pictures. And, Juanita, I missed that they called Carmen Eliza, thus giving poor Eliza some breathing room to get established in LA.

Yes, I'm certain Joel was breaking into the Governor's Mansion as I remember that house when they showed people arriving at the big party. Now THAT is farfetched. I'm pretty sure state governors in Mexico have way more security that that!

Lado

Bella, I see your point about Max. He certainly could have figured out a better way to handle the two wife situation. But I have a soft spot for good fathers, and Max is a loving father to all three of his children.

"ENEMIGO":

Deb: Looks like Cuban Girl (with the curly hair) will get whacked tonight based on the previews of the psychopathic prison guard gutting her in the stomach.

HALIMACANDY: You're missing out on this one.

Novelera: How in the world did Joel break into the Governor's Mansion with all of that security ?

Once again, we're still stuck in "2007".

Lado

I'll try to recap tonight's episode.

"LADO":

Juanita: I believe Patrick (Joel's boss) is involved with the Syndicate somehow, his body language seems very odd all the time.

Novelera: We'll find out soon enough!

Lado

This TN keeps it moving....good pace so far.

Max is a coward. No way you sacrifice one child for the other for this length of time. Charlie is out of danger for now so he should have made himself know to Eliza and the kids...like I said before they are strangers and only 1 of the kids know a little of English. And he knows they have been displaced in this strange land. Grow a pair. If not, somehow Eliza will end up with Andreas of Steve.

Nett

"LADO":

Nett: Andres' wife will NOT let Eliza get anywhere close to him.

Steve's wife & kid (whenever they show up) aren't going to let that happen either.

Eliza should NOT be with anyone.

Lado

I agree with Nett...Max is unworthy. He barely knows Andres yet he's letting his family be a burden to strangers without contacting anyone. He could find another place for them if he wanted to. And Jennifer is so ridiculously unreasonable yet he caved. Eliza will be better off without him.

Al otro lado del muro - Capítulo 10 - Parte 1

The episode begins with the explosion we saw yesterday. It then jumps to Los Angeles, where Tomas doesn't want to do his English homework. He wants to be with his grandmother. He imagines that at this moment, she is watching her telenovelas. Karina tells her brother that when they're grown, they can visit her. "And what if she has died?" he asks.

But she hasn't died! The scene shifts back to Mexico, where we see Carmen regaining consciousness as she lies on the floor of her burning house. The fire engines arrive, and a fireman stops Carmen's employee Lupe from entering the house. She explains that her employer is still inside. He tells her that it's doubtful anyone could have survived.

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Eliza gives Sofia the CD, and Sofia tells her the whole sordid story of Ernesto. She thought he was an honorable man, but iturns out he's the partner of people who kidnap girls and sell them into prostitution. And Julian wouldn't come with her; he thinks she has betrayed his father. Eliza tells Sofia that Julian is confused, but when he realizes the situation, he'll understand. Eliza asks Sofia whether she's gone to the police. She says she can't. The Senator is part of the network. "I can't trust anyone but you," she tells Eliza.

Joel enters the governor's palace, gun drawn, looking for Sofia. He spots Ernesto, very drunk, looking at his laptop. He doesn't bother with Ernesto and instead goes upstairs to continue looking for Sofia. He even whispers her name, but he gets no response.

Carmen, covered in a blanket, is led by a fireman from the burning house. Lupe is very happy to see her. Carmen wants to leave the scene with her. Lupe tells her an ambulance is waiting to take her to the hospital. Carmen is adamant: she won't go to the hospital. If she goes there, they'll kill her.

Paula gets a call from Vicentito. They couldn't find the CD, so they burned down the house with the woman inside. Paula asks about Eliza's two children. "I didn't see any kids," replies Vicentito, "but if they were inside, they're now little angels in heaven."

Ernesto continues to drink and to stare at his laptop. We now see that he's watching the video of Joel and Sofia kissing at the gas station store. Ernesto then imagines he sees Joel and Sofia together, starting to make love. They turn to him and smile. He gets up, enraged, throws his whiskey glass across the room, and falls on the floor.

Apparently Joel doesn't hear Ernesto's glass smash nor his falling to the floor. A door opens and a surprised Julian comes out. Joel tells him he's with Interpol and has come to save his mother and him. There are bad people who want to hurt you. "She's not my mother, she's a traitor, and you want to kidnap me," replies Julian. The heated conversation brings Ernesto, who points a gun at Joel. Joel gets the better of him, but Pastrana appears and decks Joel. Paula comes and takes Ernesto away to talk, while Pastrana puts Joel on his shoulder and carries him off.

Paula tries to get Ernesto to stop drinking. He keeps fuming about wanting to kill Joel. Paula tells him he'll be able to do so later, but not now. She says she'll be in charge of finding Sofia, and that Interpol too are looking for her. "It may turn out that Joel is about to become your ally." [I assume she says this because Joel will be singlemindedly looking for Sofia, too, thus making the task of finding her easier, but perhaps there's more to it that I've missed.]

Lado - Cap. 10 - Parte 2

Max hears Jennifer crying. "Are you all right?" he asks. He goes into the bedroom and sees her sobbing on the bed. "Are you all right?" he asks again. (Huh??) She tells him, "You think I'm a selfish person, but you don't know how much I loved you." Max replies, "You know I love Charlie and would give my life for him." [Oops--this is either the second or third time he says this. Sloppy writing...or foreshadowing??] Jennifer continues, "Did you ever love me, even a little? Were you thinking of her when you were with me? I need you. Make love to me. The only thing I want is for us to be together with Charlie. I lost you a while ago, and Charlie...." That's apparently a turn-on for Max. He and she do the deed.

Carmen is at Lupe's house. She's coughing. Lupe would like her to go to a clinic. Carmen says she can't. She doesn't trust anyone. "This wasn't an accident," she tells Lupe. Lupe suggests she go to the police, but Carmen nixes that idea, since the men who set fire to her house were sent by the Governor. Carmen fears that both she and Lupe are in danger. They should leave. She pulls a credit card from her bra and says, "I'm not stupid. Te dejé con el ojo cuadrado," which I think means something like "I've amazed you."

Eliza, meanwhile, returns to Andres's house after seeing Sofia. She says she was looking for a place to move to, and she thinks she has found one. Andres knows the one she's talking about, it's next to a French bakery. She has enough savings to pay for a few months while she continues to look for Max, and she has a cousin who just arrived from Mexico. The cousin may move in with her. She then says she's tired and leaves. Andres's wife senses that something is wrong that Eliza isn't telling them. "And who is this cousin?" she asks Andres. [Surely it's Sofia.]

I'm having trouble remember the time sequence. At some point, Eliza comes with her children to visit Sofia and Alondra. They go to a park, and the kids ask whether they can go play at a school for immigrants nearby. Sofia agrees, but tells Karina to be careful and not say much about her name. [Red flag alert]

The next morning, Jennifer brings freshly made orange juice to Max. She tells him she dreamed about Charlie getting married, and being healthy. She says that science makes breakthroughs all the time, and perhaps they'll find a cure for Charlie. Max reminds her that they should be cautious in their optimism. She tells him she feels happy, because she feels she can count on him.

Pastrana may have carried Joel off, but the next time we see him, Joel is being released from a cell. Patrick tells him that he fouled up their operation, and Patrick had to pull strings to keep Ernesto from pressing charges. One more error, he warns, and Joel's out..

Eliza comes to see Steve. He still remembers nothing. The nurses brought his things, but he hasn't had the courage to open the bundle. Eiza opens it, and a wedding ring falls out. It carries the date 6 April 1997 and the initials S & M. So Steve's name will start with one of those letters. She also tells him to stop thinking, close his eyes, and try to feel his wife, her odor, her embraces, her lips. The two of them do this, and his hand touches Eliza's. He apologizes.

Carmen calls Eliza and tells her about the fire.

Sofia tries to pawn the watch she took from Senator Slimy. She claims it's her dead husband's. The pawnshop owner starts to make a call.

After Ernesto makes a hypocritical speech about improving the safety of citizens, Paula tells him there's bad news:the baker has escaped from the fire. She's alive.

"LADO":

Juanita: You know that Eliza's Mommy is not out of danger yet because the Latina Doug Stamper & Co., will keep gunning after her.

The pawnshop owner will call Ernesto.

Laro

With all the killing and torturing, not to mention the video of Joel with Sofia, why was Joel in a jail cell the very next scene. No questions asked by Ernesto? Patrick warned Joel ...but maybe it's better off if he works outside the CIA...cuz there's something strange about Patrrick.

Lado

Thanks so much, Juanita, for a terrific recap with lots of snark.

I talked to my television last night. First, why in hell doesn't Sofía make some more copies of that blasted disc and, maybe, put the original in a safe deposit box?

And why haven't the hospital staff put Steve's picture all over the internet and in the LA Times?

Not sure if it's iffy writing or my iffy memory, but how does Carmen know she's in danger if she goes to the hospital? Sure these guys tried to kill her and burned down her bakery, but she seemed to be alluding to a big government conspiracy that I didn't think she knew anything about.

Well, Max has sealed his doom. Whether he's foreshadowed an early death or a very long miserable life, feeding Jennifer's fantasies was a huge mistake. They did the thing I've seen many, many times, he got into the sex with her by seeing Eliza's face for a few seconds.

I'm more certain than ever that Carmen will join her daughter and grandchildren in Los Angeles. And she won't stop ragging on Max!

Porras does drunk and jealous quite well!

Spanish Student, Joel turning up in a jail cell without any explanation is a telenovela staple.

Several commenters have registered suspicion about Patrick. You all may be right, but so far I've only seen the normal bureaucratic lifer in Interpol trying to control a very talented but impulsive fellow agent. I've also seen this dozens of time in telenovelas. Some sidekick always tries to calm the hotheaded male protagonist.

Lado

Many thanks, novelera, for your appreciative remark and your terrific comments. You start off with some great questions. But to play devil's advocate, I would say that of course Sofia should make some copies, though if she doesn't have access to a computer with the appropriate programs (and being on the run, she probably doesn't), that may not be so easy. And given the invisible reach of the human trafficking network, she probably can't go into a random computer store and ask them to do it. But yes, she should have made copies while she still had a chance.

And yes, the hospital and/or the police should have circulated photos of Steve over the Internet and perhaps in the LA Times.

As for how Carmen knows she's in danger from a big government conspiracy, it's possible that one of the guys who broke into her house may have said something in passing. I'd have to check the recording of that episode on Telemundo's website to be sure. Unless one of the thugs did say something, I'm not sure how she could know. But wait! She's a telenovela fan. Surely this isn't the first novela to include a government conspiracy. :-)

I have a question perhaps you (or another reader of this discussion) can answer. When Eliza is talking to Sofia, at one point she says Aunque uno tenga el agua cuello, sola no se queda. I wanted to include it in my recap, but I couldn't really figure out what it means. My guess would have been a far-from-literal "it seems that life wants to bring us down, but we can't let it." Alternatively, perhaps the second part means "but you're not alone." Or none of the above.

Lado

Novelera....totally agree with you. Extra copies of that disc and the flash drive are a must at this point...but maybe they'll get to that once they're settled into a new house.

On Max...I'll try not to go thru the whole series without saying he's a coward every epi...but...he is. Knowing what he knows...no way should he have slept with Jenny after the way she's bulled him. But more importantly, he's totally content to see Eliza fend for herself...better yet, take the help from a stranger, another man. Regardless of knowing Andreas is married, he shouldn't let his family be burden to anyone when he's capable of taking care of them.

Right now, both Andreas and Steve have wives but perhaps someone else will come into the show...but I truly hope Eliza does not return to Max once she 1) learns that Max has another family and 2) he left her on her own.. for who knows how long...because he was too weak to face up to Jenny and deal with both issues head on.

Is anyone else thinking that perhaps the cure for Charlie lies within Eliza's 2 kids. I'm thinking some type of transplant is in the future. But that's way too much speculation at this point.

Super spy Joel is Super Stupid for now. Breaking into the governor's house, while physically compromised is hair brained...but that's TN writing for you. Keeping him alive to help find Sofie is a good idea. Once he inadvertently puts her in harms way again.....he'll have no one but himself to blame.

So...where is the letter that Max wrote and gave to Steve. I expected it to fall out of his clothes when the ring fell out. I hope it materializes ...not to help Max but to help Steve know who he is.

Juanita: I see that Alejandro's new corrupt partner is the cousin of one of the Drug-Lords.

Lado

I just went back to see whether it's reasonable that Carmen knows she's in danger if she goes to the hospital, because there's a huge conspiracy that involves the government. Well, it is reasonable, because when she told the thugs she had already called the police, one of them asks her who she thinks the police work for, and he tells her they work for the Governor, and that's who sent them to get the disc. Or something like that. I didn't remember this conversation, but there it was (after far too much buffering on my computer).

Lado

Nett, good point about the letter Max gave Steve. I'd forgotten all about that. OTOH, now that you've reminded me about it, I have this vague recollection that perhaps it fell out when Steve was beaten up. Or perhaps not. :-)

Lado

Juanita, I also wondered about what Eliza said. But since cuello means neck, I interpreted what she said as something like: "Even if you're up to your neck in hot water, you are never alone" (because you have good friends; at least she has one).

Lado

Juanita, THANKS for checking on what was said to Carmen. Now that you mention it, I also remember Vicentito saying that.

Lado

Muchas gracias, novelera, for the translation. I guess I came close with the second option of "you're not alone," and I much prefer your "even if you're up to your neck in hot water" to what I said.

Lado

what a wonderful recap Juanita! I can really appreciate the time you put into it to add all the little details.

a couple of things I thought I heard, Lupe has family in Tijuana and that's where her and Carmen are headed, Carmen should also have the money from the cash register that she stuffed into her shirt.

and I think Sofia said she isn't staying in L.A., but is going far away and disappear.

Joel searching for Sofia in the Governor's mansion when she wasn't there sure was suspenseful, I kept thinking Julian would help, even a little.

I don't get letting Joel go, he's too good, and the only one that can help Sofia.

I think the letter, money, plane tickets, etc, Steve was getting out when he got jumped and they grabbed it all, but have we seen everything that was in the bag, Eliza quit looking when she found the wedding ring.

Max is what could be called a good guy as he tries to make everything work out for everyone, but Jennifer has reeled him in, his only real happiness over the years has probably been the time he spent with Eliza who has a way of making everything good, but yes, everything looks pretty hopeless, should he even try to fix things at this point?

thanks Juanita for digging out what Vicentito said.

Lado

Deb, your good memory is in evidence again! Thanks for bringing up Carmen going to Tijuana with Lupe to get away from a bad situation in Puebla. And, I believe you're right that the thieves took Steve's bag with his passport (his ID) and everything else.

Let me digress a bit. Carmen going to another state reminds me of what happened to a relative of my co-worker. Graciela is from the State of Zacatecas in Mexico. Her brother had a good job in the state government. The members of whatever cartel was in power at that time apparently knew that he had family (two sisters and one brother) living in the US (all the siblings here have achieved citizenship). They tried to run him off the road in Zacatecas. He escaped, got his family together, taking his son out of class in the university that is in the City of Zacatecas, and fled to Mexico City. He knew that the plan was to hold him ransom until his family sent the money.

I'm not clear exactly how, but some months later he knew it was safe to return, and he's now back there gainfully employed. These are the sorts of things average people have to live through in Mexico and mostly because people in the US want their drugs.

Lado

Novelera...your coworker's relative's story is scary. Very lucky to have made it out alive...but to return..I don't know that I would have been brave enough. It is so unfortunate what so many people have to deal with all across the world when it comes to crime, corruption and weak government structure.

Deb...I get that Max is suppose to be a good guy and I don't miss that point but his weakness has put his first family in a compromising situation. How much slack do you give him for the way HE has chosen to deal with one family and sick child vs the safety and welfare of the other family and 2 kids. I'm critical of his weakness not his kindness. Also, he is in the states with resources and access to info and an attorney. There's a better way to deal with Jenny even if it means exposing himself to bigamy charges...perhaps something he's gonna have to face eventually.

Novelera: Max is a BIGAMIST with 3 kids with 2 different women (Eliza & Jennifer) & I believe Eliza shouldn't be with ANYONE. It looks like Eliza's Mommy might be heading to Los Angeles (if Paula AKA the Latina Doug Stamper & the Syndicate don't track her down first).

Many thanks, deb, for your appreciative remarks and very helpful comments. Yes, Carmen and Lupe are apparently headed for Tijuana. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the bad guys have contacts there as well, but OTOH, Carmen is one gutsy, savvy woman. (I wonder whether she'll take her rifle along.)

I suspect that Patrick does recognize Joel's abilities, however reluctantly. I'm not one of those who suspects that Patrick is corrupt. I think he's thoroughly a by-the-book kind of guy, and he has a hard time dealing with the unconventional Joel.

I agree with you that Max is basically a good guy but terribly weak. Of course, his weakness stems partly from the fact that he is a good guy who wants things to work out well for everyone. But it ain't gonna happen.

"LADO":

Juanita: Carmen & Lupe better hope that the Syndicate doesn't follow them to Tijuana before too long because the Syndicate has spies EVERYWHERE.

I believe it's safe to say Dr. Marquez got whacked.

Re: Patrick, perhaps I read too much into his statement about how he had to pull strings to get Joel out, plus the ease in which Joel was released in the first place. Just seemed like Ernesto would have wanted to drill him and he may have the authority to do so. But Paula also implied that Joel would somehow help their cause which made me wonder. For she's intimately involved with the politician and the mafiaman, so I wouldn't put it past her to make other side deals. Ernesto, afterall, rarely knows what she's doing and her secrets have included murder and torture. In novelas she's the type who'll sleep with anyone to get what she wants.

I hope Steve and Eliza remain platonic friends only...otherwise its the same story but with her being the second wife.

Fabulous recaps, recalls and comments by everyone. I tried commenting over the past few days but my comments got lost somewhere and never got published. Hope this makes it.

IMHO, once upon a time Ernesto and Max were good guys with high ideals and a lot of positive ambitions but in pursuit of their goals they were tempted and corrupted. Perhaps they will try to right some of their wrongs before it's over, but I don't see a happy ending for either of them.

Ernesto seems truly hurt by Sofia's "betrayal". She is his weakness. Joel also suffers from the same weakness.

I can't believe Max will get away with avoiding Eliza long term. How are they going to work that?

Steve....see your point on Eliza...she's proving that she can survive and doesn't need anyone. But these TNs typically like to portray a happy ending with everyone coupled up...so speculating on who Eliza will end up with is only natural.

But to Spanish Student's point, the men in her life now are already with someone so that would have to addressed...or she'll just end up in a different triangle.

I didn't initially think Patrick was dirty...but a good point was made about how easily Joel was handed over to the authorities. The bad guys typically torture and kill everyone that opposes them so to let Joel go without a scratch is suspect.

I can see Sofia not wanting to stay in LA ....but no way should she be thinking of going back to Mexico. I thought she meant just going to another city or state...not back...that's a ridiculous thought.

Are the writers trying to connect with us...viewers who watch novelas to learn Spanish? There's a lot of back and forth (or Spanglish) between Joel and Patrick, and the Texan prefers to speak (more like struggle with) Spanish (so do I). I've seen about 8 novelas in the past 5 years and the "customer service" characters (in US scenes) always spoke Spanish which was pretty far fetched, but this time I've noticed a few English speakers (security guard at bus terminal, nurse in hospital, bank representative, etc.). Looks like a step towards diversity and bilingualism in telenovelas.

Carmen and Eliza talk through the wall in Tijuana/San Diego, Carmen spills and wants to know why, Eliza tells of the disk.

Sofia tries selling the Senator's watch, it's worth $100K, the pawnbroker will give her $15K, she finally takes it, but wants help getting passports.

Max sells the house to Jenny, which requires the signature of his wife and she signs, and also warns the realtor, if someone else claims ownership tell them it sold and that's all, or I will ruin you.

Max and Patrick meet with Marquez, ah, the autopsy plus the investigation say Sofie killed Irene, starting with burns consistent with being shot at close range, Joel doesn't like being taken for an idiot, he knows the truth, but when Marquez mentions his nephew, Joel didn't know Iren was pregnant, this slows him down.

Carmen tells Eliza she better find Max, because she can't come back to Mexico now, they both pledge to work hard to get visas so they can visit each other.

Marquez gives Joel Irene's belongings, there is a present for him amongst them, a watch, he puts it on, Pastrana, who has been listening in the whole time, calls Paula and tells her he fell for it, Paula brings up the gps signal on the laptop showing Ernesto he will always know where Joel is, Ernesto reminds Paula that he will decide what happens to Sofia when they find her, and if anything happens to his daughter,,, I will hold you responsible.

Pastrana tells Marquez he will be watching him.

Patrick's argument is that it was Sofia's ranch where the kids were held, she didn't come to see them in the U.S., she hasn't come up with any proof, and just used them to get out of the country.

Sofia comes to Andre's and is being questioned by his prying wife when the kids come home, she waits for Eliza, who comes in and goes to her room, Sofia follows only to hear that Eliza wants her gone, Sofia pleads for an explanation, Eliza spills, she lost everything, house, bakery, that were to be her kids inheritance, and almost her mother, because the Governor sent men looking for her, how dare she put her family in so much danger.

Sofia and Alo get their pics taken for the passports, but won't pay till she gets them, they meet the next day at the pawn shop, she gets the passports, but does he get the money?

Eliza is devastated, goes outside and sits on the steps, Max watches from afar.

Andres and Eliza go to the realtor who tells of the house being sold, but won't say more and threatens to call the cops, Eliza doesn't understand how that could be done since she is his wife and didn't sign. (doesn't the realtor wonder about any of this?)

Sofia drops off a little box for Eliza, Andres returns with Eliza who breaks down, she has lost everything, Andres hugs her as his wife watches from the window, she looks in the box, it's lots of money.

Patrick and Joel visit the Senator, he's bedridden, it's Sofia's fault, that woman is trouble...

Wonderful recap, deb! Thanks very much. As you know, I'm in awe of how you can capture so much so succinctly.

So did Irene actually plan to give Joel the watch and Pastrana just added the chip? There was, after all, a short handwritten note, and the watch was something that Irene apparently told Joel she wanted to give him because he was never on time. Still, how did the bad guys manage to find or create the handwritten note?

I am losing all respect for Max. He now sees Eliza outside Andres's house looking miserable, but I doubt that that will change anything. The more I think about it, the more I think Max's repeated "I'd give my life for Charlie" foreshadows what will happen. If so, perhaps that means Jennifer will be left without Max and without Charlie. Can't say I'm unhappy about that.

Lado: There is certainly not a dull moment in this novels even if you do need to put your beanie on at times. Didn't interpol check Irene's room and see the bullet hole in the window?

Juanita: Joel wearing the watch with GPS tracker means Ernesto, the Latina Doug Stamper & Psstrana are watching his every moves OMG.

I also still do NOT trust Patrick either.

Thanks, deb. Missed a lot of the discussion at the column-like border wall. I wonder how Carmen will continue to be incorporated in the story. Patrick was clearly too eager for Joel to take the bait/lie about Sofia. How long before Joel realizes the watch has a gps. Max comes across as a lazy, pathetic wuss. The only character who contributes less to the story, via inactivity, is Steve in his hospital bed. I just hope Andres' wife didn't take the money.

Spanish Student, yes, the choices of English and/or Spanish are interesting. I work with many Spanish speakers, and they do switch around a bit. Sometimes they don't know the Spanish word for the tool they're using or a word like "time card" is just easier to say in English than tarjeta de horario.

Also, I noticed that Senator Irving Cummings, who apologizes for his Spanish often, uses the cliché gringo speech pattern. He doesn't know how to conjugate the verb, so he uses the infinitive instead, say, yo saber o ella caminar. This is almost a joke among native speakers.

Thanks so much, deb, excellent recap as always!

Bella, great point about the bullet hole in the window! Wish Joel had thought to remind Patrick about that. They still have made Patrick a bit ambiguous, in my opinion. He DID seem too eager to jump on the Sofía as murderer bandwagon, adding that it was her property where the girls were found. And he said that perhaps she felt she was about to be exposed and that's why she told the authorities about the children being there.

The money thing is odd. Sofía got $15K for the watch and then was supposed to pay everything she had for false passports. That seems high. It seems to me that giving the money to Eliza as recompense for her having lost the bakery in Puebla may mean that she plans to stay in LA. We'll see.

Can't seem to get Andrés' wife's name straight. Don't think they address her much in the novela. Anyway, she saw her husband embrace Sofía and that may spur her to keep the money. Although how she'd explain their improved financial circumstances to her husband seems hard to do.

They've been dropping hints in flashbacks about the marvelous cookie recipe Eliza came up with. Suspect that will be her business going forward.

I wondered if it's that easy to talk through a very flimsy fence at the border!

Yep, Max is becoming more and more unlikeable. Sure he loves Charlie, but he's apparently willing to let his other children live in poverty. As far as I can tell Eliza came to the US with clothes and that's all. She had a small amount of money but surely not enough.

Lado

I got the impression that Sofía planned to use the passports to go to Europe, or maybe South America. I think she feels that the US is a bit too close to Mexico or that Cummings may be able to track her down in LA.

Lado

thanks all!

hmm, as Marquez pointed out, Irene's death was investigated by the Mexican Federales ??, (who are under the governor), I don't think either Joel or Patrick visited the scene, all they have is what Sofia said, and now a folder of proof that she did it, bringing in an honest doc to do the autopsy sure didn't work out so well.

it looked like Pastrana was wearing the same style watch that they gave to Joel.

also they mentioned Ernesto was going to visit the Senator which is what got Joel's attention, they didn't know Sofia was there, or anything that has happened since she left Mexico.

I was curious about the wall scene too, it would be too easy to pass things back and forth.

Nett, my beanie was screaming at Sofia's leaving all that cash for Eliza in an unsealed box. As you say, Sofia's the one who doesn't trust almost anyone. Even by very low telenovela standards, the money thing was dumb, dumb, dumb writing.

novelera, I like your description of Patrick's portrayal as ambiguous. He sure seemed to be in league with the baddies last night OR to be the least astute Interpol agent ever for accepting all this without much proof. But as I watched the scene, I kept thinking that Patrick sensed that Marquez was not telling the truth and sensed that quite possibly other people were listening to this conversation. Patrick therefore tried to make it seem as if he bought what Marquez was saying so the bad guys would be satisfied/fooled. He kept urging Joel to accept what Marquez was saying and leave, but Joel didn't pick up on this. [Perhaps because I'm all wrong and there's nothing to pick up on?] I had expected initially that Patrick would convince Joel to leave and then, after they've left, Patrick would tell Joel that probably Marquez was acting on orders rather than on what he found and believes. But of course that didn't happen, either. Sigh.

And yes, I'm almost sure that Eliza will wind up baking marvellous goodies in LA. I thought this especially after she told Andres and his wife that she had found a place to rent, and Andres identifies it as the place next to the French bakery.

Lado

One more thing: I'm mystified by the $15,000 Sofia was asked to pay for the passports. We don't actually see her handing over the money when the guy asks for it, but it hardly seems likely that she stiffs him, takes the passports, and leaves. She might like to do that, but I strongly doubt she'd get away with it. But then how else could she leave all that money for Eliza?

"LADO":

Juanita: Max is PISSING me the fuck off with letting his other kids live in poverty, OMG. I wish I could choke his ass!

Plus, I wonder how long before Jennifer gets Eliza evicted from the place next to the French bakery next ?

Lado

Novelera, I'll have to listen to the Senator more closely. I didn't know people were getting away with not conjugating verbs. And I totally get the use of Spanglish but Patrick and Joel have a way of saying 2 sentences in English followed by 2 sentences in Spanish.

If Andres' wife were smart she'd leave the money alone so they can get out of her house.

It's been 2 weeks since the novela started but are we dealing with the same time period? That's a long time for Max to have ignored his first family w/o a valid excuse. On the other hand I don't see how Max dying will fuel Jennifer's antagonistic role unless he's with (or protecting) Eliza at the time.

Like others have stated, I wonder how long the writers are going to let Steve remain anonymous. By the time Max acts, Eliza and Steve will be bffs. Steve Boudreaux, if Steve gets even part of his memory back (the part that knows where he lives and that he's a citizen, lol), no doubt he'll rescue Eliza from Jennifer's attempts to get rid of her. She is without a doubt his guardian angel.

Spanish Student

Lado

The novela was not terribly clear about how Eliza was able to come to the US. I know for a fact that it's EXTREMELY difficult for family members of Mexicans who already live here to come to visit. My co-worker's brother comes sometimes from Zacatecas, but he has a good job as, I think, a surveyor with the State of Zacatecas. So apparently he gets a visa because he owns a home and has a good job.

I would suspect that Eliza came as the wife of a US citizen, and that Max had promised to begin or already had begun to get her status legalized with a green card.

She IS married to Max and probably has documentation of that fact. So I don't see how Jennifer could get her deported.
