LADO – LUNES – EPI. 19 – Parte 1

We again see Joel enter Richard García’s office and see Sofía. García tells him that her being alive is completely confidential. Joel starts shooting off his mouth, and Sofía is ready to walk out.

García wants Joel’s help, but Joel is, like always, bitter. García tells him to listen. Two years ago when it was time for Sofía’s execution, some new investigations contradicted what she said in her confession. It had to do with Senator Irving Cummings and the criminals involved with child trafficking here in the US. The FBI asked the judge to postpone the execution and to examine these proofs. There was absolute discretion; the press was told she was going to see someone about an appeal. On the way somewhere (I wasn’t clear where.) a tractor trailer came from nowhere and ran into the van with Sofía inside. The guards were killed instantly and Sofía almost lost her life.

García tells grumpy Joel that it wasn’t an accident. They caught the driver a couple of days later and he admitted it was Cummings who hired him to kill Sofía. Unfortunately he died that same night in his cell. The judge then agreed for Sofía to be placed in witness protection. Joel keeps sneering the whole time. Sofía storms out and is seen by Patrick on her way out. García tells the ranting Joel that maybe those “proofs” of Sofía’s guilt were planted. He says he’s gotten to know Sofía and doesn’t believe she’s capable of killing anyone.

Sad sack Max goes on with his story to Eliza. She says she understands about Charlie, but what about his two other children. He says he had to choose and, by the way, Katrina and Tomás are healthy and have a strong mother.

Across the Tijuana fence Carmen tells the kids she got a visa to come to visit. She says she’ll be able to grab them by the ears in person. When the older kids step away for a while, Carmen asks Rodrigo why he was asking about his father. He says he thinks he saw him yesterday.

Eliza tells Max it’s over for them. He tells her it appears she didn’t waste any time. He saw her with “that guy”. [Did the writers forget he knows Andrés?] “And, by the way, how old is that boy? Nine? A few months after you got here you were with him.” She tells him to get out and not to approach the kids.

Charlie asks Jennifer to call Rodrigo’s mom so he can see him again. When she makes the call, Eliza is out jogging and flatly refuses.

Max goes to tells his trouble to Steve, who isn’t very sympathetic. He tells Steve he was so happy with Eliza, and his life with Jennifer is a living hell. But he says that now Eliza no me quiere ver ni en pintura. (Doesn’t even want to see a portrait of him.) Max tells Steve that Eliza has a man and has a child with him. Max has the cojones to be jealous, saying it drove him nuts to see her with the other guy. He still loves her.
 

LADO – LUNES – EPI. 19 – Parte 2

Max wants Steve to contact Eliza and give her money. He says it isn’t a lot right now, but he’ll send some every month. He thinks she needs money because she works in a bakery [!!] and the guy works construction.

We see Sofía’s room that is full of pictures of Alondra. Richard has shown up and is trying to talk her into working with Joel. She says that “they” threatened her. If Joel had believed her, things might have been different.

Paula is telling Ernesto it will cost big bucks to whack Juan Estevez in prison when Julián comes in and gushes over Paula’s appearance. Then he hits his dad up for some money. Ernesto has obviously ruined this kid.

Yikes! Benny shows up with a huge wad of money and asks Tomás to keep it overnight. He’s going to take it to the immigration lawyer in the morning. Tomás says no, but it looks like he’s convinced at the end.

Annoying techno music tells us we’re in a disco in Puebla. Julián buys some pills from a skeevy looking guy. His pretty girlfriend, Vane (probably short for Vanessa) comes to join Julián. He tells her he has a ticket to paradise, and we see her take a pill, but not him. We see fuzzy camera work to show Julián and Vane are probably high as kites dancing in the disco. Later Julián is in a hotel room making love with Vane.

The children notice that Eliza is unhappy. Rodrigo knows what’s wrong, but he doesn’t tell the others, at least not yet.

Patrick shows up at Joel’s, and the two of them do that weird alternating sentences between English and Spanish. It doesn’t matter which language is used, Patrick sings the same song he sang 10 years ago. Joel is impulsive, yada yada. Joel has decided to join forces with the FBI. But his plan is not to just get Cummings; he plans to get Sofía and Ernesto as well.

Some guy called Carlos shows up with Senator Slimy to see Ernesto and Paula. What this Carlos guy says makes little sense to me. I guess because Juan Estevez hung himself in prison (right), Ernesto has to leave the country. Three consulates are free: Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro or Los Angeles. [Wanna guess which city he’ll choose?] He doesn’t want to leave, saying he won’t have enough time to campaign.

Julián wakes up to see Vane jump from the balcony and fall, presumably, to her death. He calls his father, who, to his credit, interrupts his meeting to take the call. Sobbing, Julián tells his father that she jumped from the balcony and it’s all his fault. Ernesto calls the guards who apparently go places with the boy to get him out of there.

loved the double take Patrick did as Sofia whisked past him, kind of odd how all that Patrick does is follow Joel around.

so now Max wants his kids, he wants them to hear his side of the story (since no one else cares what he has to say) good that Steve calls him on wanting to buy in, and he wants no part of it, (maybe Max should do something nice like put together the paperwork so they can be documented)

that's kind of a secret room Sofia has all the pics of Alo in that she keeps locked, it's gonna be a while before Joel is going to even consider Sofia did it for her daughter.

ah, Carmen has the kids not tell Eliza she is coming, it will be a surprise, yep.

yes, we only see Vanessa take a pill, but later up in the room she wants paradise to last and they both take one.

Don Carlos I think is the big cheese and strategist for the party, I think his point is that Juan's death will bring up the whole thing with Sofia and all and it will be used by his opponents, and if they are successful it would kill his chances of ever being president, whereas if he backs off it won't be an issue and later on he would be able to return and run.

And yes, Patrick's only function in the novela seems to be to follow Joel around and tell him he's too impulsive. It also gives the two of them a chance to show off their ability to switch needlessly back and forth between Spanish and English.

Good point about how Max could actually make himself useful by providing documentation for Eliza, Tomás, and Karina.

Lado: Max and Ernesto are both macho hypocrites. It's ok for them to have affairs but they unravel if their wives do! In Eliza's situation, Max thinks the worst of her because he didn't hesitate in being with someone else. Joel also thinks the worst of Sofia . Even the FBI agent got that Sofia could not kill anyone.
I hope Eliza and Sofia don't end up with a wuss, Max and an ass, Joel.

Lado: First of you, Gracias novelera for all your outstanding recaps. Secondly, I agree with you that Joel is ruling himself out. Actually, he is kind of repulsive to me. Maybe if he was a great guy; kind, compassionate, a good listener, intelligent, I would find him more attractive. But his smirky facial expressions are a turn off.

I am, as usual, fashionably late to the party, but can't pass up the opportunity to thank our recapper for another great recap and to add to the flurry of completely justifiable epithets regarding Max and Joel, our ungallant galans.

Novelera, you have a gift of condensing 45 minutes of dense dialog and pretty intricate plot details into a concise, clear and entertaining recap.

As far as our galans are concerned, they are just the worst.
Halimacandy, I loved your qualification of Max. He is indeed a wuss, and a sniveling coward and a total hypocrite among other things. I was totally disgusted with his excuse to Eliza for abandoning his children- that they were healthy and would get by without his help. What if they were to fall ill too? What if they needed his help, emotional of financial? What if Eliza died and they were left without anyone to care for them? And then to have the gall to tell Steve, after 10 year of not caring what happens to them and whether they are alive or dead, that they are his children and his is concerned for their welfare? Absolutely despicable!
Bella, i totally agree with your qualification of Max as a macho hypocrite. He is a bigamist, he cheated on Eliza for years with another woman, had a child from her, abandoned Eliza and his children for 10 years without bothering to check that they are ok and now he dares to complain that she had a child with another man. Even if it were true, he is the last person that should opine about it and I loved Steve so honestly chewing him out! I actually like Steve more and more with every episode and might even prefer him over Andres as a love interest for Eliza.

As far as Joel is concerned, he is so dumb that I don't know how he was hired by the Interpol in the first place. He believes every shady character spewing complete nonsense but fails to even consider that Sophia was framed, even though everything logically points towards this option. He does not deserve Sophia and she should never forgive him.

Bella, I like it that Steve is not guapo. It is much more realistic that way. To be honest, I am getting tired of all of those flawless galans who had so much surgery done that they look like plastic Ken dolls, good looking but fake. Here they give as a more normal looking, believable protagonists.
I had the opportunity to watch some Chilean novelas and the difference with the Mexican ones is startling: all of the actors basically look like common, normal people. It is very refreshing to see a telenovela where the protagonists look like your mother without a make up or your next door plumber neighbor.

Joel meets with Richard, he wants to see Sofia's file, nope, classified, her new name?, Alejandra Miranda, Rich hands him Cummings file, this is the only investigation we are doing, afterwards Richard will help find Irene's killer, later Joel has his people check out Alejandra.

newspapers aren't so good this morning, news of Juan's death or news of rich girl falling to her death, Ernesto tells Paula they have to discredit the girl, link her to prostitution.

Joel breaks into Sofia's house, and into the locked room, goes past all the pics of Alo and finds a box, he takes pics of them with his phone, oh wait Sofia is home, he watches her undress, Richard calls her, something is not right, she checks around but Joele has made it out.

Irv meets with Ernesto, pitches the consul thingy, don't you see, in LA we could prey on undocumented minors.

the cops have come to question Julian, he makes a break for it on his moto, but is later stopped and arrested, Paula is on the scene, detective Durango, may I have a word with you.

Joel checks out the pics Sofia had, they are undocumented minors, he wants to send Sofia back to jail, Patrick states, she cannot be charged with another crime, yes but Alejandra Miranda can, he'll tip the police anonymously. (so this was Richards idea bringing Sofia and Joel back together, for???) Patrick concedes, if Joel has indisputable proof, he will help.

we see Sofia approach a mother and daughter, she warns her that her boss is a child molester, he'll have you deported and get custody of your daughter, the mother doesn't believe her.

Rod walks up to Max who is stalking Eliza, you are my dad, right? and Max sees that he is, but Eliza breaks it up and tells Max to leave, he is there for his kids, Andres tells him to leave, but Eliza gets between them, and Max goes.

Andres would have liked to have popped him, Eliza thanks him but doesn't want to cause him any trouble, Andres says he would do anything for Eliza and her kids, for his family, what?, this stops Eliza in her tracks. (is this one of those moments here where things change)

Tomas has been looking for Benny all day to get rid of that $30K, and finds him at home ??, and meets the gang, and a fist to the gut, I think it's a question of who they will kill first, but Tomas wants to fight a guy without a gun, ok, (is 66 the leader?) and they make a deal, if Tomas wins, they go free, ok, but you will be fighting Tiny (who is anything but).

ok, so where is Rod, Eliza wants to know so they can have their sit down, hmm, hiding in Max's car on the way home.

MANY thanks, deb, for stepping up and giving us this excellent recap. I'm typing this with one hand, so it will be short, but I did have a few thoughts as I watched the novela. I understand how Sofia got photos of Alo as a teenager, but there were also photos of her as a young girl, and also some that looked like school photos. How did she get those?

Senator Slimy seemed especially slimy in his talk with Ernesto. He seemed to glow with pleasure when talking about all the boys and girls with undocumented parents in LA. An untapped mine to explore. He tells Ernesto "You help me as consul, I'll help finance your campaign."

When/how did Rodrigo get into Max's car?

Deb, I'm late to the party. I had a very busy day and had no opportunity earlier to thank you for your excellent recap. Yes, where is Vincentito?

I'm not sure, but I think those photos of the little girls were the people Sofía is trying to save now, as opposed to the photos that Alondra found in Senator Slimy's house. At any rate, it wasn't the same box.

So Joel, the a**hoel, is going to anonymously turn in Alejandra Miranda? Right about now I like Ernesto better than I like him, and that's saying a lot! Yes, Bella, Joel is going to have a big, rude awakening when he finds out ALL the truth about Sofía. If this were a Univisión novela, the truth wouldn't be revealed until the second to last episode. But sometimes Telemundo doesn't make us suffer so much.

I'm pretty sure Tomás offered to fight to save BOTH their lives. Benny is a candidate for the Darwin Award for his stupidity in robbing Devil's crew. But I think they're both going to make it out alive. Maybe Tomás has been studying Muay Thai martial arts and beats the tar out of the big guy. I know a young man who competes in Muay Thai fights, and these guys have mad skills!

And Gabriel Porras very subtly showed with his facial expression what he thought of Slimy's proposal to use a position at the consulate to get more young girls. Did I miss something? Has Ernesto already said he'd choose LA over Barcelona and Rio?

Hi all. I saw the doctor today about my hand, and he wants me to have some x-rays. I doubt anything is broken, but one never knows. Anyway, he said I should give the hand a rest until the x-ray (which I'll have tomorrow). So I'm afraid I still won't be able to do a recap. I'm hoping I WILL be able to do one tomorrow (Thursday).

I think that Sofia became a photographer right after her 'supposed' death and that's how she got the pictures of Alondra because she she followed Alondra around while she was growing up and to date

I don't think Eliza knows she is alive and in the witness protection program.

I want Tomas to come out ahead and not join up with the gang. He did have the balls to stand up to the gang leader and said he would fight him, that is until he saw the big body guy.
 

Lado....Part 1 for March 21st.

Here goes.... Using bullet point for now but as I progress...I hope to get more creative like the rest of you guys:
• We open with Julia bribing an officer to free Julian. She is successful and when they return home, Ernesto chews him out and sends him to his room like the little boy he apparently is. Ernie then tells Julia he plans take up the consultant’s offer to LA (I think)
• We switch to Tomas fighting the gang member. Despite the David and Goliath mismatch, Tomas prevails. He attempts to walk away from it all but the gang leader tells him he can’t…and tells him and Benny that he will be in touch. (I hate when the good guy gets suckered into something because of a dumb friend)
• After arriving home, Max finds Rodrigo in his back seat and freaks out a little. Rod confronts him about being his dad. Max confesses and says he wants to be a part of his life. Rod is cool with this…and the realization that Charlie is his bro. The housekeeper runs outside in a panic explaining that Charlie can’t breathe. Max later arrives at the hospital with Charlie in his arms and Rod close behind
• In the meantime Eliza and Andreas are searching all over for Rod. While in the park, she receives a call that Rod is with Max at the hospital.
• Apparently, Jen went to visit her half bro Steve…but really to spy on Max. She gives Steve the 3rd degree about his conversation and time spent with Max…attempting to confirm that Max told her the truth about his where abouts the night before. While speaking with Steve about her issues with Max….and his obsession with Eliza (and not realizing her own obsession with a man that does not want her)….she receives a call from Max but does not answer. We don’t see their time in NY so maybe she was not delusional when she tells Steve that their time spent in NY was good. She is cynical and accuses Max of waiting for Charlie to die.
• Eliza arrives at the hospital and Rod goes to see Charlie….asking him not to die
• Jen returns home and is told by the housekeeper what happen and off she runs to the hospital
• Eliza overhears Rods consoling Charlie….and soften ups some with Max….. Eliza and Rod leave the hospital…..in the nick of time since Jen is on her way….and what a fight that would be
• On the drive home, Eliza and Rod discuss Eliza lying about Max….as expected…he doesn’t know the whole story and is hostile with his mom. I suspect if he was older and really knew what a coward his dad was and had actually abandoned the family for 10 yrs without so much as a word..he might feel different. But he’s not

Lado Part 2 for March 21sth

At the dinner table….after a some conversation about Tom’s fight…Rod demands that Eliza explain about Max. While I think he’s a good kid…I want to reach thru the screen and shake him…..cause he has no idea…that he and his family got short changed by Max….not by Eliza. The family gives Eliza the 3rd degree about Max, his other family ….meanwhile Alondra goes to bed….looking a little depressed by it all. Rod fill’s the family in about Charlie and rightfully so the older kids are angry and question Eliza justifying Max’s abandonment.
• Steve flashes back to conversations with Max about Eliza….and remembers their talks while he was in the hospital.
• Sofia is watching the same news cast that Alondra is watching …..I didn’t catch everything but they both were drawn to the announcement…and I think it was about Cummings.
• Karina lays down the reality to Eliza about Max’s actions….despite Rod’s and Eliza protest about Charlie’s illness. Later in their bedroom, Karina fills in Alondra about Max and the lie of him being a great dad. Alondra commemorates….as she too reflects that her dad is a bum as well.
• Later that night….Ben tells Tom that having Max as a dad is a benefit because he’s a US citizen. While talking about this….a gang member comes up and offers Tom a package that he refuses. Ben …..who now wants to think….tells Tom he’s making a mistake by rebuffing the gang. Too bad he didn’t have this kind of smarts before he decided to rob them.
• Max calls Eliza and updates her about Charlie’s condition. Rod….naively thinks that Charlie’s mom is nice and she wouldn’t mind if they visit Charlie at the hospital.
• Next day, Julia and the FBI guy are in her apartment discussing the Cummings situation. Julia is bent on taking him down but the FBI guy is more concerned about her safety. He closes that when Cummings fall….so will Ernie.
• Joe and Patrick are having another enlightening conversation about Sofia and her apparent guilt….. and his conviction that Sofia is still trafficking…right under the FBI’s noses. The voice of reason, Pat tells Joel he’ll do nothing without proof.
• FBI guy and Sofia have a heart to heart about her being patient. A guy by the name of Jeff Murray comes up in the conversation. I didn’t catch everything….so a little help please
• Tom skips class and goes to the bakery. He complains that schools not that important for those undocumented as Eliza tells him to go to class
• At the hospital Max and Jen discuss Charlie….but then Max goes to the office. Of course Jen is a little suspicious of this.
• Paula and Ernie discuss Ernie’s next move while Paula eyes Julian at the pool. Like the snake she is, she slithers over to Julian to see how far the apple fell from the tree.
• At the hospital…Jen discovers by accident that another woman accompanied Max to the hospital with Max.
• Cut to previews for tomorrow.

Thanks Juanita. I actually wrote the recap as I was watching. I didn't trust my memory and couldn't get my CCs to work so I was typing as the show went along. This is the one time I was appreciated commercials so I could cathup.

I understood big picture what was going on but if there was nuanced conversation....I probably didn't catch it...so please help out. In particular I didn't understand the details of the conversation with the FBI guy but I knew what the discussion was about. Same thing with Ernie and Paula...I did't catch the details but knew what they were discussing.

Nett, your first recap was exceptional! And without CC's!

I can elaborate about Paula's conversation with the detective in the car while Julian was spread-eagled on the ground. He was going to be honorable and refuse her bribe, but she showed him a picture of himself, apparently accepting some kind of bribe on the freeway - perhaps letting "cargo" go through without being inspected. He folded right away and took the money.

If I remember correctly, when "Devil" was telling Tomás that would now have to be part of the gang, the gang leader threatened harm to his jefecita (mom). So I was kind of surprised when he later refused to accept whatever the other gang guy brought for him to hold for the gang.

I thought Steve was putting two and two together, remembering Eliza telling him that she came to his hospital room because her husband had not come to pick her up at the bus station and she feared he was in the hospital. I think he's figuring out that the woman who appears in his dreams is Eliza.

What Sofía and Alondra were both watching, horrified, was the news that Ernesto was going to be the new Mexican consul in Los Angeles.

Jeff Murray is the guy that was seen walking down the street with the undocumented mother and the child. Sofía tried to warn the mother, but she wouldn't listen. At first Richard told her there was nothing the FBI could do. Later on, he told her he had good news. They discovered this Jeff Murray had a prior for molesting children in another state, and maybe they could do something to protect the little girl.

Juanita, I'm SO glad you saw a doctor. If you felt pain when typing, I was afraid something was broken. Hopefully a couple days icing it and resting will put you right.

Just thought of another interesting thing that happened. Paula told the detective, after he'd agreed to the bribe in order to release Julián, that she wanted Julián's tie returned to her. Remember they did a close-up of poor Vane's body showing that the tie she jumped with around her neck had his initials, and presumably his DNA, on it. Later on Don Carlos, the political mover and shaker brought the tie to Ernesto's home, gave it to Paula, and made some cryptic remark about knowing everything that goes on.

I like Rod, he is the innocent guy that is going to bring it all together, but yes, he wasn't born when the family sat in a bus station waiting for Max, wasn't there to see their house taken away, and was the one that ate Eliza's marvelous cookies rather than baked them.

ah Charly is 13, Karina does the numbers, Max had a family when he was visiting us in Mexico, Tomas doesn't do the numbers, he is done with Max.

Karina rips Alo's book away to rant about her missing dad returning, Alo who just saw (on tv) her dad was returning says welcome to the club.

did Richard almost say he cares for Sofia, anyway Jeff is wanted in Indiana ?? for child molestation, he's off to Indiana to get the particulars, it will be a couple of days, he warns Sofia to be patient, of course she will.

hmm, Paula gave the detective a check for 500K pesos to make Julian's case go away, and to get the tie back, but Don Carlos delivers it to Ernie.

the nurse at the hospital was kicking Jen out beause it's only for family, Jen tells her she is the mother, oh, I thought the other women with Max was his wife.

a couple little details I don't think have been mentioned,

one of Ernesto's reasons for going to LA is to find his daughter, after 10 years Paula let it slip in an earlier show, that she has known where Alo is and has had her monitored.

a while ago Ernesto referred to the governor about something, and last night I think the TV referred to him as the previous governor.

an interesting aside is that Paula has more brains and competence then any of the men she works for but I guess since this show is more political than narco, she has to play second fiddle to the guys.

Victoria, Eliza's friend, who put her bakery in his name because she's undocumented, is Andrés. Sometimes Tomás calls him Andy. I like when they show the kids growing up in the US using US nicknames. I've seen that before.
