This is what a mini-recap looks like.
Sofía tells Alondra she should forgive her mother for her own good. Ernesto calls while they are together.
J-Low and Max have a big argument about his desire for a divorce and Charlie tells them to stop it.
Joel wants Sofía to work at the consulate. When Richard disagrees, Joel accuses him of wanting to continue playing "happy families" with Sofía.
J-Low tells Charlie a load of crap; no divorce. Charlie wants his parents to divorce; his father deserves to be happy with his other children. Furthermore Charlie would like to live with his father and his other siblings. Later J-Low doesn't, of course, tell Max what he said, rather how sad Charlie is about the divorce.
Karina talks about the violence in Mexico with Carmen. Carmen then shows her the good side of the Mexican people on the internet.
Ernesto comes to see Alejandra/Sofía while Joel is still there.
Julián's gold card has been cancelled. He tells Paula he wants to have credit to take Karina out. She slips up, saying his relationship with Karina could be "useful".
Sofía accepts the job at the consulate from Ernesto, who keeps gazing dreamily at her.
Lorena wants to be part of the team to protect Joel [keep him away from Sofía].
Johnny invites Frida to the recording studio and says he has a fantasy of getting it on there. Frida is furious; she thought once was enough. He tells her, if she tries to sue to get her contract rights, he'll accuse her of being a prostitute. She runs out.
Rodrigo is a good match for a bone marrow donation. J-Low explains the half brother thing and tries to get the doctor to go ahead without permission from both Rodrigo's parents.
Things heat up with Julián and Karina at some club. When she goes to the bathroom some jerk offers him rohypnol.
Eliza finds Alo crying in her bedroom. Alo tells Eliza the whole story; she believes her mother is alive. She feels it.
I'm posting mostly to say that I'll be doing my usual Tuesday recap.
novelera, I love the fact that you did this. Since I try not to read recaps until I've seen the episode, I'll probably comment later tonight.
Wow, novelera, I've now seen the episode, and your "mini-cap" captures everything important. I'm really glad you did this. Hopefully, some other people who may have hesitated about trying a recap will see that it doesn't have to be lengthy and detailed to be interesting and helpful.
I can't think of anything important that you left out. I might just add a few details. One thing that surprised me is that when Ernesto came to Alejandra's to talk with her about the job he's hoping she'll accept, he is again overwhelmed by her resemblance to Sofía. He keeps staring at her, and at one point he briefly puts his hand on her face and brushes back her hair. I expected that she'd be upset at his action and would say something, but she doesn't. I suppose she's decided to take the job and doesn't want to do anything to spoil that opportunity, but still, his action is totally inappropriate toward Alejandra, and not to react is to encourage his belief that she's Sofía.
J-Lowest really got to me tonight. Is there a word lower than "lowest"? She plays on Charlie's feelings, telling him "you know I can't live without you," and she lies to Max, telling him that "Charlie has nightmares because you're not here." And then she tries to get the doctor to behave illegally because she doesn't want to ask Max and Eliza for their permission for Rod to donate bone marrow. I was afraid the doctor was going to give in to her pleas, but apparently he's holding firm about not breaking the law.
I hope Julián too will hold firm about not breaking the law, but he looked much more tempted than I'd expected when the sleazy guy offers him the date rape drug for $20. I mean, does he really not remember his date who jumped to her death at the party? I was already uneasy when Julián asked Karina, in an incredulous tone, "Are you a virgin?
Finally, I'm just curious what other people think about Alejandra's supposedly close resemblance to Sofía. Ernesto, Alondra, even Eliza (when she sees the photo taken at Alejandra's exhibition at the embassy) think she looks just like Sofía, but I don't see it. Some resemblance, sure, but not the kind of uncanny similarity that the characters in the novela see. I understand Alondra's reaction, since she not only has seen "Alejandra" but heard her speak, seen her move, and sees resemblances in all these areas. But Ernesto faints the minute he sees her, and Eliza sees just a photo. ???
Juanita: Julian is going to drug Karina & violently RAPE her.
Paula obviously wants to have Karina "taken care of" if this continues.
Novelera: Bold Prediction: Sofia's cover will get blown! Eliza going to the Mexican Consulate General office shows her confronting Sofia.
thanks so much for your recap novelera!
I felt like we were missing some things, weren't Andres and Eliza talking about a hug he gave her, anyway Andres wants the truth, Eliza doesn't want to jeopardize their friendship but lays it out there, Max wants to move into the new house and be a family, that's what she wants too.
and what were Karina and Carmen talking about, some argument Carmen got into with some lady?
so Lorena is moving into the picture, talk about not getting emotionally involved in an investigation, of the 5, that would be Patrick, who isn't.
they'll be able to get all the dna samples and fingerprints from Sofia they want once she is working at the consulate, guess that's why we settled that issue first.
I hope Alo goes with it being Sofia, I like her being smart.
Mi Familia
never a dull moment with this family.
I was thinking Patas and Erika (the social worker) would make a good match, how could I forget he has a wife and kid, she didn't.
I think Julian has met his match with TJ.
does Genesis like girls, her dad wants to know.
interesting twist the husband of the conned couple helping out, and Rosa's boyfriend, uff, he's a rich bad boy.
so Marisol gets to clean the locker room, added to her endless stream of to do's, Santiago is one tough coach, but always covers for her, still trying to get his boss ladies name, the director.

Deb, I'm glad you brought up the "missing things" issue. I did not remember Carmen and Karina having a conversation with some women who was insulting to immigrants. I did rather like Carmen's PSA about how many good people there are in Mexico, even though all the news we hear in the US seems to be about narcos.
I don't remember either the hug that Andrés was apologizing for. Now, I will say that Eliza was just a tiny bit ambivalent in her talk with Andy. He said that Max's dream was to have his family living together. Eliza said it was her dream as well. Well a dream could be interpreted as something you're not 100% sure will happen.
I think that guy offering Julián a date rape drug will turn out to be a red herring. He was ready to "take the next step" in that he asked her to go somewhere where they could be alone, or have privacy, don't remember the exact words. He's ready. He told her he's in love with her. He was shocked to think she might be a virgin. This might be because of the nouveau riche crowd of young 'uns he's been running with. In a more conventional tight-knit family like Eliza has created, with Andrés as substitute daddy, young girls sleeping around is probably NOT the norm.
Thank you for the recap Novelera.
I had a very difficult week at work so had to put Telemundo's telenovelas on hold, but was able to catch up with last week's episodes over the week-end. I am yet to read the recaps and the comments, but am sure that I will like the recaps much more than the actual episodes and would like to thank in advance all of the recappers for a job well done.
All this Eliza and Max romance is outright nauseating. The issue of him cheating on her and marrying for money wasn't even addressed. I mean, ok, maybe the fact that he abandoned her with two children and no means of subsistance is not a big deal, but surely his bigamous marriage for money is something that merits at least a slight reproach.
And Max is such a hypocrite. Now Charlie's illness is suddenly not a factor and he is ready to divorce Jennifer pronto. His dying child will be o.k with it because in any case all they did was fighting, so he has to divorce asap. Why wasn't it o.k divorcing years ago? Were they fighting any less?
I really find almost no relatable characters in this telenovela, apart from Carmen and poor Andres. Almost all of the characters lack dignity, are very poor judges of character and not too bright.
Irene
Also, I don't understand Jennifer's motivation in not just asking Eliza's permission for a bone marrow transplant and instead trying to bribe the doctor and being willing to compromise the safety of her child by taking him to Mexico for a procedure.
I am sure Eliza would have authorized it.
If she is trying to keep the treatment secret to keep emotionally blackmailing Max, then how is she going to explain the fact that a critically ill child is suddenly doing great?
Irene
Deb and Halimacandy, thank you for the recaps.
This telenovela is very suspenseful and constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat, but I think it is the first one where I hate and find repulsive just about every single character. Even the hero, Alex, lost all my respect during the last episode, when he shot this woman in the leg. It was going way too far. Not that pulling teeth and breaking fingers is ok, but Alex's previous victims were all despicable criminals, the lowest of the low, so even though Lula Pineda was technically right when she said that his behavior is criminal, I wasn't feeling too much compassion for those criminals and thought Lula's expertise in human rights would have been better applied in other cases.
But shooting an innocent woman is another thing altogether. This is really a crime, both legally and morally reprehensible. And the worst part is that this was even not a ticking clock situation and the sole purpose of the shooting was to make Samson confess to a thirty year old crime.
Irene
HALIMACANDY: What do you mean Sanson had the 411 on the violent butchering of Alex & Roxana's parents ?
Are you saying there was a massive conspiracy to kill them ? What did the parents exactly do to get whacked in such a violent way ?
Irene, good to see you back. You always have interesting things to say.
I see Max's wanting a divorce in a more positive light. He's not ignoring Charlie's feelings or his illness. He's trying to do the best thing for Charlie, who has told him that he wishes Max and Jennifer would get a divorce and he wishes, too, to live with Max and his other siblings, not with Jennifer. Charlie is aware that he may have only a little longer to live, and he wants that time to be a happy time, not a time where his parents are constantly fighting and his mother is preventing him from experiencing things he'd like to experience before he dies. I see Max's sudden insistence on a divorce as in part a wish for Charlie to have a better quality of life in whatever time remains. Yes, of course the divorce serves Max's desires, but it's not at the expense of Charlie. Far from it.
Just watched 2 shows that reminded me of this novela and blog. First, Fridays 'Jane the Virgin' where Jaime Camil tried to get his co-star (Brooke Shields) to appreciate the over-the-top dramatics of telenovelas. Next, 'SNL' where host John Mulaney joked about the hoops you have to go through to prove to online software programs that you're not a robot.
Novelera, your short version was perfectly accurate. All I can say is Jennifer needs psychological help. Her emotional abuse has turned the 3 males in her life into indecisive wusses. And thumbs up to Alo for recognizing/knowing her Mom. Now if only she'd quickly realize why Sofia is undercover. Lastly, I hope Julian realizes that Karina is too close to home (i.e. a family friend) to drug for sex. Alo would kill him. Clearly he needs to share less with resident whore Paula...she's a role model for prostitutes. And if she had a backstory it would probably involve being a child victim of sex traffickers.
I keep my beanie tight these days so I'm ready to accept Lorena as part of the investigative team. Afterall, her obvious loneliness and jealousy are far more important than their consequences, right? If she only knew that Sofia, the witness under protection, is running the show anyway.
Spanish Student
I am not an expert on family law, but as far as I understand, Max's marriage to Jennifer is void and can be annulled. He does not need to divorce her, just ask for an annulment. In contrast, Eliza's marriage to Max is the real deal.
Irene
It is just a speculation on my part, but I think that the Professor is none other than Roxana.
Irene
Irene, I am under the same impression as you about the validity of the two marriages. I never understood why Max doesn't just seek to have the marriage to J-Lowest annulled. However, the fact that the marriage to Eliza was in Mexico while the marraige to J-Lowest took place in the US may complicate matters. I don't know. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV :-).
Irene, one more thing. One reason that Max may be pushing harder for an end to the marriage now is that Charlie is older and is quite vocal about his wish that his parents get a divorce and that he live with his father and siblings. When he was younger, he probably didn't make his wishes known. He may not even have known that there was an alterative. He's been living in a bubble, pretty much sealed off from the world, until very recently.
I AM A BIG FAN OF THE LITTLE OLD HAG... She is usually a long suffering self sacrificing plyer, I love seeing her ''behaving badly
EXCUSE ME IS THE SOCCER PLAYER YOUNGLADY HAVING A .....RELATIONSHIP'!! WITH HER COACH!!
This must have been filmed before the OLYMPIC SCANDELS!!
Apparently, the Me Too movement hasn't come to Telemundo. Not only is there the hint that something might go on with the teenager and her coach (REALLY bad timing with this, Telemundo), but Julian needs to be beaten. First, he breaks in on TJ taking a shower and he, along with the entire family, argue with her about locking the door instead of closing the dang door and letting her put some clothes on first, then he tries to peep at her in the backyard. Nice that she got him with the hose, but now all HER stuff is wet. She should have just hit him with it. He deserves it.
I was thinking that Eddie should get a slap too for thinking that he has a right to tell of Marisol's coach for doing his job- not your place, Eddie- but if Coach thinks he can cross that line with one of his players, then let Eddie at him.

Joel returns to his apartment find Patrick there with Lorena. Patrick explains that Lorena has joined the team. She has lots of experience and gets impressive results. Joel objects, but to no avail.
Rodrigo asks Carmen whether there are countries where a man can marry several women. Yes, Carmen replies, but not in the US or Mexico. Here, it's called bigamy, and it's a crime. Rodrigo asks, Can they put my father in jail? Carmen goes to get more tortillitas. Max arrives. Rodrigo tells him that they have a conversation pending, man to man. He says to Max, "Don't tell me that you can't divorce Jennifer to be with us because of the laws of this country." Max tells him it's more complicated than that. He mentions that Charlie is very sick. Rod insists that Charlie is not going to die. When the conversation is over, Rod asks Carmen, who has been sitting in a nearby room reading, whether she heard what they said. She claims that when she's reading her magazine, she hears nothing. Rod is skeptical. He reminds her that she has said "Tú siempre estás con un ojo al gato y otro al garabato, which means something like one seems to be focused on one thing while really paying more attention to something else.
Julián and Karina are having a good time when suddenly Julián sees a young woman who reminds him of Vanessa, Julián's date who jumped to her death after taking drugs. Karina is about to drink something when Julián shouts "Don't drink that!" and knocks the glass onto the floor. He then rushes off to the bathroom (where he probably throws up). When he returns, he tries to explain why he was upset. He tells Karina that the girl he saw reminded him of a girl he was with at a party. A guy put drugs in her drink [gee, Julián, what guy would do a thing like that?] and then raped her. The drug left her helpless, and she killed herself. Julián says he felt guilty. Karina assures him he shouldn't feel guilty. Julián asks whether she'll help him overcome these feelings. "Of course," says Karina. "Count on me."
The doctor tells Jennifer that both of Rodrigo's parents have to give their permission for Rodrigo to donate bone marrow to Charlie. Jennifer claims that the mother is a terrible, uncaring woman who won't give her permission. She pleads with the doctor to do whatever it takes to save Charlie. The doctor insists that he'll do everything possible, as long as it's not illegal.
Max tells Eliza that he's trying to get Jennifer to agree to a divorce, but they just end up fighting. He says he'll persevere, but he hopes that while this is happening, he, Eliza, and all their family can live together in the new house. Eliza says it's not going to happen until they are legally married under the laws of this country. To do anything else would set a bad example for the children, and, moreover, Eliza wants to be legal in this country and not feel like "the other woman."
Rachel is set to go to the embassy to have her photo and fingerprints taken as a step toward becoming a legal resident. She's nervous and has a bad feeling. Everyone assures her that all is well. She tells Eliza that Santiago offered to go with her, but she said that wasn't necessary. [Uh oh, Viewerville hears warning bells ringing.] Raquel offers to give Eliza a ride to the Mexican consulate on her way.
Lorena and Joel fight again about why Lorena has offered her services to Patrick et al. She claims she wants to help and has the skills to be useful. He counters by saying she's jealous. She tries to kiss him, but he turns away, saying she has lots of work to do to get up to speed about Cummings, and he'll go to the office [in the middle of the night].
Max tells Eliza that he wants to recognize Rodrigo legally. "He deserves to have the same rights as Charlie. [I had assumed that Max's name was on Rod's birth certificate as the father, but apparently Rod has Eliza's last name.]
Ernesto calls Alondra and says he needs information about Karina's university plans, etc. Alo is pleased that he's following through on his offer to help Karina and agrees to come see him.
Julián asks his father what he did to keep the scandal concerning Vanessa's suicide quiet. Ernesto tells him it took a lot of money to shut people up. Also, adds Ernesto, we're here now, in exile.
Paula is not happy about Ernesto's having offered Alejandra a job at the consulate. "You want her here because you want to sleep with her." Paula tells him he should call Alejandra and tell her he's found someone else for the position. Ernesto tells Paula that he's the boss, he makes the decisions. Paula warns him, "Don't complain when your photographer winds up three meters under the ground." Ernesto grabs Paula, starts to choke her, and warns her not to touch Alejandra. Apparently the rough stuff turns both Paula and Ernesto on. "Make love to me," says Paula.
Jennifer tells Steve about the experimental protocal that may help save Charlie's life, and that Rodrigo is the donor. She admits that she hasn't asked Eliza for her permission, fearing that she might say no. Jennifer asks Steve to intercede with Eliza. He refuses, saying that Jennifer has to talk to Eliza. Jennifer is adamant about not doing so. She then recites all the specific ways in which Charlie's system will fail and all the agony he'll suffer if he doesn't get treated. She asks, "Isn't Charlie's life more important than trampling (atropellar) on Eliza's rights?"
Rachel drops off Eliza and continues toward the embassy. I'm already nervous even before I see Julián driving while using his cell phone. As he passes the Mexican consulate, he spots Alejandra arriving on foot. "Sofía?" the shocked Julián asks himself. He stares at her and not at the car whose lane he has accidentally entered. The driver of the other car--Rachel (of course)-- swerves to avoid a collision and crashes into a hot dog stand, injuring the hot dog seller. The police come. Rachel tries to explain that a car crossed into her lane, but she doesn't speak enough English to make herself understood, and the cop doesn't understand Spanish.
Eliza is in the consulate looking at the exhibit of Alejandra's photos. Suddenly, Alejandra appears. The two women stare at each other. "Sofía? What are you doing here?" asks a stunned Eliza. Sofía replies that she's Alejandra Miranda, and that many people have confused her with Sofía Villavicencio. Eliza persists in trying to talk to her, finally saying she wants to talk to her about Alondra. That stops the conversation for a moment, after which Alejandra tells Eliza that if she continues to pester her, she'll call the police.
A panicked Julián calls his father and tells him he's had an accident and the police have arrived. Ernesto tells Julián to leave immediately before the police see him. He does so. Rachel sees him drive off and tries to tell the policeman that the other driver is leaving, but he doesn't understand her. So instead, he arrests her.
Richard, Patrick, and Joel are watching inside Ernesto's office thanks to the bugs they've planted. They hear Ernesto call Paula and summon her to the office: "There's been an accident outside the consulate. We have to control the damages." Richard calls someone and asks the person to get information about the accident, including names.
Eliza appears at the scene. She asks a guy standing nearby whether he saw what happened. He tells her that the accident was the fault of a guy who was texting and taking photos and wasn't looking at the road. The witness, Brian, thought the guy was going to crash. The two cars didn't hit each other because the woman driving the other car swerved (dio el volantazo) her car. The guy was the one who caused the accident. Eliza asks Brian if he'll come with her to the police station and make a statement. He refuses, saying he doesn't want any trouble with the police. His wife is undocumented. Eliza tells him that she too is undocumented, but undocumented people have to help each other. If we don't, who will?
Ernesto is talking with someone in the consulate. He asks the person whether anyone from the consulate was involved. No. Just then, an official comes in. He wants to look at the security cameras to see whether they can identify the car that fled the scene. Ernesto will probably seek help from more tequila, at least until tomorrow's episode.
DEB:
DANG.. IS RIGHT...!!! TEAM ROXY...
THE PROFESSOR MAY BE ROXY?????????????
THANKS...I INTEND TO GO IN DEEP ..LATER.. I WNAT TO KEEP UP WITH SUMMERY TO REOPEN NEXT SEASON'S BEGINNINGS..
Thanks so much, Juanita, for the fabulous recap. That was surely an eventful episode.
Jennifer has a screw loose. She actually did a pretty convincing plea to Steve that she couldn't risk asking Eliza to agree to the donation. But, to me, that was pretty classic projection. Jennifer would absolutely not agree to anything of the sort if Rodrigo was the one with the illness and Charlie the healthy one. But I'm not even sure that's her real reasoning. It feels like she doesn't even want Eliza to have a chance to be noble. It almost seemed like she had the doctor halfway convinced to do ... something.
I'm still not liking Lorena much and I'm absolutely convinced she won't end up with Joel. He saw right through her insistence she's the right person for the job on the team. And he appears to be rejecting her physically.
I had some hope for Julián a couple of episodes ago. But he apparently DID spike Karina's drink, and only knocked it over upon seeing a telenovela ghost. And then he over-egged the pudding telling her a girl he'd only started dating [?] had committed suicide after taking drugs, leaving out his part in it. And, then, he calls Daddy when he causes an accident in which a person is hurt. I was wondering about that. Aren't people residing in consulates, or part of the consular staff, considered somehow immune to prosecution for some things?
I have a feeling, which I hope will come to pass, that the young man will be convinced by Eliza to come to the police station and say what happened in the accident. Otherwise it's too sad to contemplate. The accident in which someone was badly hurt might be a felony, negating Raquel's residence efforts. I'm not sure about what kinds of vehicular events rise to the level of being a felony.
After years of watching telenovelas I have zero expectation that the cliffhanger will work in Raquel's favor. Somehow those cameras will be sabotaged or not working to reveal what Julián did.
I looked up garabato and it means scribbles or doodles. So, I guess, literally, one eye on the cat and the other on what you're writing? That dicho was completely unknown to me. But your sense of it was very good, Juanita.
new season, 8 May, 10 eastern.
interesting in that I thought they just started production several weeks ago, but then May is a "sweeps" month.
thanks so much Juanita for a most wonderful recap! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these.
interesting that Julian was left out of the loop on Sofia, and I think Ernesto didn't want him coming to the Consulate on Sofia's first day at work.
I too wondered if Julian didn't buy the drug and spike Karina's drink, especially the way he knocked the glass to the floor, creep, but they didn't show us.
in the english captions, the way Julian's story went, he was dating this girl, there was a party, he couldn't go, but she did and this guy...
hmm, so after Jen's long plea with the Doc, is doesn't seem they came to any decision, isn't having the operation sooner the better.
I think when Ernesto's strong arm on Paula turned to hot sex, she said, "call me Alejandra".
I was getting that Jen wanted Steve to pull out some legal tricks that would allow the operation to happen with no one being asked, hmm, and Max wanted to know why they are so chummy all of a sudden.
and just when Charlie is going to plead his case to Max for getting a divorce, Jen arrives with orange juice and a pill.
ok the accident, the police didn't get any statements from the crowd that saw it, handcuff and arrest the driver, and... just have to wait and see.
that saying I think came out in the english as, keep your eyes on the cat and your ears on the ground.
Muchas gracias, novelera and deb, for your gratifying, helpful, and insightful comments. I was really curious about the "gato" saying; I wasn't satisfied by the dictionary's telling me that garabato means scribble, doodle, scrawl. So often I've found that the meaning of a saying isn't revealed by my translating the words. I then went to WordReference.com, my very favorite source for meaning and usage. There were a couple of discussions of the meaning of the saying. The one I found most helpful was at http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=733578. That's where I found that the saying can mean either to do two things at once or, perhaps more often, to seem to do one thing while in fact paying more attention to something else (like listening to someone while paying more attention to the good-looking person across the room :-) ).
I agree that it's possible that Julián spiked Karina's drink, but I'm more inclined to think that he didn't (perhaps because of what happened to Vanessa). He's really shaken by seeing the woman who reminds him of Vanessa, and I think he blurts out "Don't drink this" and knocks it away from Karina and onto the floor because he's in the throes of his memory of the earlier event. I think either interpretation works. Given the fact that he lies to Karina about how Vanessa got a drugged drink, I may be giving him too much benefit of the doubt. I guess we'll see in the episodes to come what kind of person Julián is now. For me, it could go either way.
novelera, I should add that I agree strongly with what you've said about both Jennifer and Lorena, and I share your hope that the witness (Brian) is persuaded by Eliza to help.
deb, thanks very much for pointing out that the sooner the operation is done on Charlie, the better. Thus, Jennifer does not have his best interests at heart when she refuses to ask Eliza's permission for Rodrigo to be a donor. And thanks too for Paula's "call me Alejandra." I was so struck by the overall perversity of the relationship between Paula and Ernesto that I forgot that splendid morsel.
Novelera: the BODY COUNT Update:

5.) The Smuggler
6.) Pastrana's Thugs
7.) Long-Haired Pastrana Thug
8.) Dr. Marquez
9.) Vanessa what's her last name
10.) Maria Suarez
11.) The Camera Dude at the Mexican Consulate General in Los Angeles videotaping Sofia running towards Alondra before Joel grabbed Sofia.
I don't know how much more of this disgusting so called romance I can take. Eliza is only the other woman because Max cheated on her and married someone else for money all those years ago. It is unconceivable that she doesn't think about this monumental betrayal every time Max talks about the problem of his divorce from Jennifer (which of course is a non-problem, since the marriage is void, although he still risks jail time for bigamy).
Julian is a disgusting creep. Not only did he attempt to drug Karina, but it seems that he also drugged Vanessa and that is the reason she fell to her death. And after the accident he yet again failed to take responsibility for his actions and ran to daddy to resolve his problems. Karina deserves someone better!
Novelera, absent a bilateral agreement, the family members of consular officers enjoy no personal inviolability and no jurisdictional immunity of any kind and even consular officers themselves have only functional immunity.
Irene
Last night Eliza mentioned something about not moving in with Max until her marriage was recognized in the United States. I'm completely in the dark about this one. I guess I just thought that marriages contracted in other countries, even though they are citizens of two different countries, would be considered legal here. What about all the people who come here on H1B visas to work in tech? Are their marriages not valid? We just had a big CA hoo-ha about the Trump administration trying to cut off the rights of spouses of H1B visa holders to live here legally. But even Trump never said the people weren't married. Maybe this is another example of The Telenovela Justice System.
The one who has an illegal marriage appears, to me, to be Jennifer. But the writers don't seem to agree and to consider a marriage contracted in Mexico somehow worth less than one on US soil.
Yes, Julián did give Vanessa a drug, but I don't think it was a date rape drug. He bought something at the club, perhaps LSD or some other kind of pills. He took the pills also. They were having sex, quite consensual sex, and then he fell asleep. Apparently whatever Vanessa took reacted upon her in a hallucinatory manner. I don't think it was exactly suicide. I got the impression she was so drugged that she thought she could fly. Yes, it's his fault she died, but it wasn't a death as a result of trying to get a young woman to have sex with him against her will.
Irene, thanks for the info about consular officers. I sort of remember some people in NYC bashing into peoples' cars, shoplifting, or some other bad behaviors and getting away with it. I don't even remember what country's consulate they were part of. This was many years ago, and maybe the laws have changed.
Irene
Irene
Irene, many thanks for your appreciative and very interesting comments.
I haven't made up my mind yet about Julián. At times, he comes across as a spoiled brat and an insensitive creep. But every now and then, flashes of a much nicer Julián shine through.
BTW, I want to thank you for all the valuable legal explanations you've been offering. I've found them very interesting and helpful.
Thanks, Deb, I agree, wow! Every day people are getting killed. Pharisees, Kraken, probably Mamba, and I don't see how Chamaco can survive with the needle in his eye (but he might). I wanted Minerva to tell Alex that Roxie threatened her. Also, she saw Luis, could identify him.
As usual, the cops always transport prisoners on an isolated road in the country. And as usual, none of their body armor or headgear protects them at all. We've seen the thing with stopping a van, pouring gasoline on it, telling the guys to get out - before in many other shows. Maybe the cops should watch narco novelas, and figure a way to better protect their vans (maybe fireproof, or have tires that self inflate?). Guess not.
Since Puenzo is back, he must now be working for the Mil Cumbres, because they had his wife prisoner. Of course, once the Oscuros find out, bye bye Puenzo.
Tilapia has now killed 3 people (2 were sort of self defense). He even tells Alex it's kill or be killed.
And that jail seemed so nice, men and women can mingle, cells are open, sports, TV's. I guess there are a FEW drawbacks :)
Lili spends some loving time with Irma in Mexico, Panchita drops in on Daniel and Danielito in a bar, maybe convinces him to let Irma have Danielito back.
Ashley takes TJ out, Ashley drinks, dances, flirts, Tj calls Patas, there is a fight, Patas is losing so Santiago who was having a beer and flirting with a girl tips the scales in their favor, the owner shoots the ceiling, kicking them out.
at breakfast Tito and Camilia get on Eddy for what is bothering him and he slips out how Genesis is gay, what? she figures out how they have been acting, no, she is not gay.
it's a usual chaos breakfast at Patas place, except Erika has stopped by to see Lili, because of a call from her school, everyone lies at once, she's not buying, Patas spills, he trusts her.
Ashley kicks out TJ for calling Patas, Julian tries to get her to stay, but uses the pity word, she's out of their, Julian then tells her to leave.
Eddy's parents go old school and search his room, oops they find a gun.
Eddy discovers there is no quiting, he and Marcos swing by Vicente's store to shake it down, but Rosa is there to see about getting more food since Antonia noticed things missing, Marcos backpaddles, Eddy denies knowing Rosa, Rosa plays along not to give away her status.
Marisol brings a fake forged letter from Panchita, instead of her, to appease Santiago, and releasing the club from any liability for her fainting, but the other girls who are working on being captain and getting Santiago don't like being pushed aside, they listen in and hear Santiago has a girlfriend, what?
Mamba dies, Zoraida has the tv turned on with Mamba's favorite novela.
Chamaco is in the infirmary, a bad infection.
Kraken is dead.
Bauser is still missing.
the warden will handle this investigation, sends Puma to the hole, questions Tilapia.
Alex meets the lawyer at the Traidora ??, who tells him he needs a motion from a judge to get Tilapia and Roxy out, Alex gives the job to Olivia.
Puenzo is Buitre's puppet, Buitre will trade his family for Alex, he will give him the time and place.
Roxy calls Nemesio, tells him of her bloody nightmares, this time she can see the face of Guillotina, Nemesio gulps.
Alex's team seems to be close to locating Montalvo's son ??.
Tilapia tells Ears he wants faceoff with Madre. (Ears is a guy that needs a little collateral damage)
Nemesio burns their phones and any connection with Pharisee, better to start all over.
Roxy wants a meet with Guillotina, he appears in the library, kicking everyone out, Roxy wants an explanation of her bloody dreams, Madre is stressed of late, he wants her, wow, Roxy breaks back and gives him a good kick, and looks like she is getting the better of him, as Madre is getting super pissed, he lunges but the guards are there to stop him.
Zoraita mourns Mamba.
Chamaco worries he might die has Tilapia finish his letter to Carlita (a famous girl he has a crush on), her smile is better than a toothpaste commercial.
Alex meets his american counterpart in his favorite bar, hmm, Pharisee was connected to a russian organization known as 6 bears, and they don't mess with runts, Alex has his guys going through his computers.
Roxy calls papa, Guillotina tried to rape me, ut oh.
Alex has a talk with Minerva, she is looking good, he has his doubts about releasing Roxy, has doubts about Daniel (Tilapia), she did not think he would last 3 days at Los Dunas, "Let them go".
"El señor de los Cielos" begins 8 may.
DEB:
YES.. BUT ..OMG! WHAT WAS UP WITH THE KEYSTONE COPS that transported Pharrisse??
I get the feeling Pharrissee' has an insurance policy...''MY INFO IS ENCRYTPTED'?!?!

Let me know if there's anyone else I might have left out.
Don't know if there will be a recap. I usually hate to comment before a recap appears so as not to steal the thunder of someone who has worked on putting one up.
Things look bad for Raquel. More Telenovela Law. Brian's apparent telling that an inattentive driver in a fancy convertible really caused the accident seemed not to change the fact that she'll stand trial. And the person Paula bribed was a judge. This after she mentioned to Ernesto that there was a guy who really disliked undocumented persons and couldn't wait to convict them of something so as to get them deported.
Steve wasn't a big help. I thought it was odd to see Carmen giving María a bottle. I'm concerned about Raquel not being able to feed her child. Even if she pumped breast milk, and that is what's in the bottle, before going to her cita, that will run out when they keep her overnight.
Lorena behaved like a jackass at the Interpol HQ. Announcing their status as an engaged couple to Sofía was pretty tacky. And kissing him in the office just ghastly. But she did do a good job digging up the dirt on Cummings.
No idea where the cliffhanger about Alondra coming face-to-face with Cummings will go. She JUST had a warm moment with her father and then is confronted with a guy she knows to be involved in trafficking little girls. Or at least I think she knows since she found the pictures. We didn't see if Sofía told her the significance of the pictures.
There's a lot of English in this one. In a way, I'm wondering if these characters think the same thing I do when I speak to co-workers in Spanish. [I'm thinking: my accent is pretty good and I know I said that with the correct verb tense.] The young people and Jennifer sound like native English speakers, likely growing up in a bilingual home. Joel is pretty good. But all of the adult actors mispronounce quite a bit. This causes me to wonder if all my work on my accent and vocabulary for so many years just results in me sounding like Paula.
Hope you can read this article. It's scary. Today's digital NY Times, to which I subscribe, is about persons married to US Citizens being deported by this administration.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/19/us/immigration-marriage-green-card.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=second-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news
novelera, I'm outraged and heartsick, having just read the Times article whose link you provided. I don't trust myself to say more.
Many thanks, novelera, for posting about last night's episode. I too try to wait until a recap is posted before commenting, but it doesn't look as if there will be one. :-(
Yes, Telenovela Bad Luck seems to have struck Raquel. It's hard to figure why she'll have to go to trial, since IIRC the person she hit didn't have serious wounds, and, as you point out, Brian has come forth as a witness. (I now fear for him and his wife as well.) The all-seeing reach of the Bad Guys seems incredible. Indeed, not just their reach, but their speed and efficiency. How did they get a spy at the police station so quickly? And how did Pastrana have enough time to erase the parts of the security camera tape that included Julián's car?
And where does Telemundo find all these guys who look like sleazeballs? For example, Señor Alpaia, who is not just dripping with sleaze but is also slated to be the prosecutor in Raquel's case. And, of course, there's also Irving (I-Only-Hablar-in-infinitives) Cummings. I had to clean my TV screen after the episode ended.
And how did Paula come up with so much money so quickly? That briefcase she showed Alpaia was filled to the brim with stacks of $100 bills. (For that matter, since he's known to be a hard-core anti-immigrant [expletive deleted], why would it have been necessary to give him so much money?)
I'm glad that Alejandra didn't follow The Boys' instructions to stay put when Ernesto left the room. She may have driven The Boys bonkers by not doing as they said, but thanks to her "impulsiveness" she overheard key parts of the conversation between Ernesto and Paula about Julián's involvement in the accident. I wonder how all this will play out with Karina and now Carmen, who thinks he's "different" from most sons of rich men. And, of course, with Alondra.
I'm now thinking of enlarging a screenshot of J-Lowest and putting it up as a dartboard target. OTOH, given what I think of many of the other characters, I guess it will have to be a revolving target: there are so many candidates for that honor. :-)
Juanita: Brian & his wife will be the next Good Job victims in the Body Count very soon.
I wouldn't be shocked if Paula has Raquel "taken care of" as well!
Who's Alpaia ? Is he a Trump-ista ?
Spanish Student: Telemundo does love to bring the most race-baiting villains like United States Senator Irving Cummings (R-TX) AKA Rafael Trujillo 2.0
Now we get this race-baiting Prosecutor Alpaia. Looks like Raquel will get DEPORTED!
Novelera, thank you for the link to the article. I am aware of the recent developments in, but it was still heartbreaking to read.
Irene
"And where does Telemundo find all these guys who look like sleazeballs? For example, Señor Alpaia, who is not just dripping with sleaze but is also slated to be the prosecutor in Raquel's case. Juanita, that was hilariously funny and so true at the same time. I am asking myself the same question. I don't know if you watch Enemigo intimo, but just about every single character there looks slimy/creepy/sleazy/criminally insane or all of the above.
That telenovela and Lado are probably employing every single sleazeball looking actor in Mexico.
It is totally illogical that after decades of using Spanish to run his criminal enterprise, Cummings would still only speak in infinitives.
Irene
thanks novelera and Juanita!
yes, nice Julian gives 3 adults and a baby a ride to the police station in his little car, what? but he couldn't stay.
Alondra asking Ernesto to help Raquel sure put a twist on things, oh but she isn't Mexican.
hmm, Sofia not having an office will have to work in Ernesto's, so the boys will be watching mostly her, instead of Ernesto's dirty deals.
I think Tomas should look for another girlfriend, Fri keeps going back for more, at least it looks like Johnny is a producer.
this thing Max did with Rod, does this mean Jen doesn't need Eliza's permission, because she told the doc she had Max's and I think they set up the operation.
is Steve actually Raquel's lawyer or is he just advising them, and when does a person ever get arrested for a simple traffic accident?
oh yea, Cummings has an impeccable record, but if I remember correctly Lorena has a contact that discovered (in newly digitalized records since his past was somehow erased) that in his earlier days he was a sheriff in a small Texan town and by lore's further research of newspapers and such she discovered that there was a serial rapist there, mostly younger girls, who went uncaught until a rich guys daughter was one of the victims and he made a big stink about it, oh but then a guy named Jesus, came forward and confessed, hmm, but later a mob lynched him while the sheriff and his deputes did nothing.
This episode definitively established that Julian is an irredeemable creep.
After causing an accidents which resulted in a man being injured and maybe even dead, Julian flees the scene of the crime, calls daddy to yet again resolve his problem and goes to romance Carina. No guilty conscience, no remorse, nothing. Even worse, he know that an innocent woman, a mother of a newborn baby and Carina's friend, is paying for his crime and says absolutely nothing. He needs an anvil now!
Max asked Eliza not to say that she is married to him in Mexico during Rodrigo's recognition. Is it because he is afraid someone will find out that he is a bigamist or for some other reason? In any case, Eliza should have at least asked him why is he asking her that before meekly accepting.
I have ambiguous feelings about Frida's storyline. On the one hand, I am sympathetic to her plight, but on the other hand Mark is right- she chose to prostitute herself for a contract. She could have refused because the price to pay is just not worth it, that's what people do- they make difficult choices in life. A lot of people don't have money and would like to have more, but they don't prostitute themselves or commit crimes because the money is just not worth the price to pay.
It doesn't mean that I condone what the producer's behavior. He is a criminal and deserves to pay for what he did, but she could have left and found another producer. It is true that the industry is rotten to the core, but surely not every single producer exchanges contracts for sexual favors.
Irene
deb, the doctor told J-Lowest that both parents have to give their permission for Rod to be a donor, since he's a minor. But from the looks of things at the "welcome" party J-Lowest concocted for Rod, she may think she can serve as the needed second parent. Whether she'll get away with this remains to be seen. Frankly, I hope she steps in front of a speeding bus first.
Irene, I agree that Frida has made a very poor choice. However, we've seen that she knows relatively little about the world. I don't know what her relationship to Mark is, nor how or why she stays with him, but when she first met Tomás, we saw that she knew painfully little about the world outside Mark's door. And she believed (and perhaps still does believe) that Mark has her best interests at heart (as dumb as that may seem). So when Mark tells her that no one succeeds without Johnny's help, she probably believes him. She doesn't know who other producers may be, or even whether they exist.
I'll be interested to see whether Telemundo uses her to show that choosing prostitution leads nowhere or that a bad choice can be reversed and that choosing the morally upright path can lead to success. Or something else. Telemundo provides lots of PSAs, but it's not clear which message this PSA will deliver.
I hate to wish anything bad on a child, but if Jen's tactics work, in lieu of Jen being rendered powerless (or as Juanita said, hit by a bus), I'm hoping there's a small emergency or complication with Rod that will keep him from being used by her. But will make her have to contact Eliza (not easily manipulated Max) to come to the hospital. Not cool to manipulate a child for an easily approved medical procedure just to avoid asking for help.
Looks like what deb said about Cummings'past will repeat itself...trafficking ignored until this time Ernesto's daughter (and maybe Max's) is /are the victim(s). I always thought it was too predictive that Sofia has Alondra's pics on the wall like the victims.
Too many secrets in this novela that will come back to haunt them--Jen, Tomas, Alondra. And Alondra is smart enough to know that Karina's education is Eliza and Max's responsibility, not just Karina's, and should not be handled behind their backs. She knows Eliza wouldn't accept Ernesto's help, which will likely put her in danger.
Good thing is Julian really likes Karina and will end up fighting on her behalf...perhaps that'll be his redemption.
Spanish Student
Juanita, I agree with you that Frida is naïve, but she understood very well that prostituting herself for a contract is a wrong moral choice and even mulled for a second an idea of going away with Thomas, but then chose a contract over a life with the person she loves. And in this episode, she again had an opportunity to choose a right path but again chose her contract. And I am sure that by now she understands that Mark doesn't have her best interest in mind, she can't be that dumb not to notice that he is a complete and total creep.
Irene
Deb, thank you for a great recap.
The single most ridiculous moment on this telenovela was when Zoraida mourned Mamba and told her cold dead body that she was like a daughter to her and that she hopes she knew it. This is the same Zoraida that couple of episodes ago beat the cr-p out of Mamba and almost drowned her in the toilet for making a joke. Such a tender motherly behavior it was, I am sure Mamba knew how much Zoraida loved her.
I don't understand why didn't they call an ambulance for Chamaco immediately after finding him with a ruptured globe. This an ophthalmic and neurological emergency (the syringe could have penetrated the brain) which requires immediate hospitalization. It is outright idiotic to just let him lay there without even bandaging his wound and wonder that he has an infection.
Irene
lorena is on point and drop the 411 on sleazy senator..

Nett, the Telemundo page will change to #2 in about a half hour (8 PM EDT). You may want to post this message once again after the new page is up, unless you get a response before that.
Good list, Steve. I think there was also a prisoner Tilapia killed earlier, stabbing him in the back by orders of Madre. And I think Madam Borges/Minerva is still alive, but for how long? Also, the Oscuros killed various other people in some of their raids, but I'm not sure those people count in our list. And I think both Nemesio and Fermin have killed a few of their own guys who messed up here and there.
So Puenzo is told he has to kill Alex when Buitre or Luis gives the order, to save his family. I sort of think Alex is starting to suspect something's off with Puenzo, but I'm not sure.
I liked how Roxie fought off Guillotina. I'm also glad she's told Nemesio to have him eliminated. But could they really kill off such a central character?
