Por Amar Sin Ley, 5/23/18 Chapter 56 Miercoles: Traps

Chapter 56: Traps
I'm Christopher Mason. Rats come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. They are both scavengers and predators and they respect neither age nor assets. In our story tonight we will see several get very close to or fall into the traps set for them.
  • Alonso told off Marrufo, telling him that as soon as the rapists are sent to prison so will he. Marrufo – arrogant as usual – denied this, in the full belief that he was bullet-proof. Jaime told him that when he acquitted the rapists he abused their victim. He insisted that Alexa's accusations were false, which Alonso reminded him was not proven in his courtroom. Marrufo took out his cell, saying he was calling his lawyer. He thoroughly believed that he would get out of this cesspool of corruption.
  • His timing was very bad because Carlos sent the call straight to voice mail. He was in Imelda's hospital room, hoping to be able to get her to talk about what happened. He mother, Pilar, stood by.
  • Marrufo finally looked defeated as the plainclothes detectives took him out. On his way he told his secretary to locate his lawyer. He threatened Alonso by saying “This is not over, Vega!” Alonso and Jaime were not concerned as they left to present their evidence to the appropriate authority.
  • Carlos asked Imelda whether she had a problem with Vicente. She told him she hadn't. He had just annoyed her. Carlos asked for details, whether he had insulted her, hit her, etc. She had difficulty answering him, finally crying about why did hedo this to her brother? Pilar started saying that he had killed her son, but Carlos tried getting her to stop. He didn't take his eyes off the tragic girl, who began crying. Carlos told her that everything will be alright while getting her mother to talk with him privately.
  • Carlos was no fool about this. The sad truth is likely that Imelda would not talk in front of her mother.
  • Alejandra entered Ricardo's office with Asian food; he stopped work to join her for lunch. He explained that because of this case he was unable to see his children this time and hoped that he could finish up with the last pieces of evidence so he could do so. He finally accepted her offer of help and they started eating their lunch.
  • Carlos got Pilar out of Imelda's room and told her that he needed to talk to her alone. He told her that Imelda needed to learn to trust him so he could get her to tell him everything. He asked Pilar why Vicente would kill her and her brother and Pilar's only answer was that he was sick and evil. Carlos promised her that he would not put her daughter under any pressure; in his entire career he's never seen a kill done on impulse. There was always a reason. She asked whether he thought Imelda was protecting him and Carlos said that he hoped not, but it was possible.
  • Nicolás assured Astrid that his son would be able to help her brother's situation. He then suggested they watch a movie and suggested Casablanca. She asked how he knew it was her favorite and he told her that it was also his. Por supuesto. She said she hoped she had been wrong about him being selfish.
  • Roberto and Leonardo went to see Sonia with all their information and photo of their new suspect. They explained that they had obtained the security videos from all the floors, that their suspect was the fiance of the murder victim, and that he appeared to be looking around. His presence was already suspect. She thanked them.
  • Carmen entered Ricardo's office and said that Alonso wanted everyone in the conference room. It looked like he had something important to tell them. He said he would be there and as soon as she left he called Elena to say he was called into a meeting and wouldn't be able to come over to see the children. She told him that they were waiting for him and to compound the guilt she allowed them to talk guilt-trip him. He told them he would take them to the fair on the weekend and Federico had a tantrum and walked away. Ricardo asked to speak to him and Elena told him it was useless. Further that he should think about what he was doing to the children. When she ended the call she looked like she was thinking of her next step.
  • Alonso announced to his team that Marrufo had been arrested. He would be subject to the authority of a tribunal that will review Alexa's case. He credited Jaime for his assistance and said he was certain that the rapists would end up in prison.
  • El Ciego and his henchman arrived unexpectedly and walked right past Carlos' secretary as though they owned the firm. They asked where he had been and Carlos explained he had other cases to work on. El Ciego took the document he was holding and commented that his name wasn't on it. Carlos explained that he was busy setting up the foundation. All El Ciego cared about was that his money was laundered and cleaned immediately. Carlos looked almost sick at this demand.
  • Alonso asked everyone for their discovery evidence. Benjamín stood up as though he were in court and said that a large transfer had been made from Marrufo to his wife's bank account. Further that this sum had been transferred to his account the day prior to the proceedings. He then took a bow. Alonso then asked for the financial reports on the families of the perps and Marrufo's sentencing records. He then told Ricardo and Alejandra to contact Alexa's father. They immediately rose to do so.
  • El Ciego told Carlos that his money had better be clean immediately or “there will be trouble for you.” Carlos' desk phone began ringing and El Ciego picked it up and handed it to him. This didn't please Carlos but he said nothing to him. The caller was Marrufo's secretary and he told her he was unavalable. El Ciego took the phone back from him and hung it up. Carlos told him that he would have a report about the money in a few days. El Ciego told him that if he hoped that would keep him away he was wrong. Further that he didn't like liars.
He and El Gato left and Carlos looked like he finally realized what a Faustian bargain he had made.
  • Elena brought the children's dinners on a tray but Federico claimed not to be hungry. He had a bad case of the Sulks over Ricardo's absence. Elena played the Work card and said that Federico now had to tell him how important he was to him. She smiled to herself when he wasn't looking.
  • Alonso and the others reviewed Nora's case and determined that they could not use it. They had to move on to Alexa's.
  • Elena asked Federico what she could do to make him happy and he said “Nothing.” Natalia wasn't as sulky as her brother; she was sure that their father would keep his promise about the weekend. Elena played the Good Mother for a few minutes, as though she meant it.
  • Ricardo and Alejandra went to Hugo, who received them. He told them that Alexa contines to receive nasty messages and e-mails. She would not go back to school. He had enough money for them to pick up and start over again elsewhere and he was preparing to do that. Ricardo told him about Marrufo's arrest and showed him a file. Hugo looked at it and said that this would not stop the nasty messages. Ricardo and Alejandra told him that Marrufo was likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. Alexa would just have to appear in court one more time. Ricardo was certain that the rapists would go to prison and that Marrufo would get what was coming to him. She asked when the trial would be.
  • Back in the conference room Leonardo described the travesty that happened in court where Marrufo would not accept the recording of the phone call and also permitted the prosecution to abuse Alexa on the stand. When he mentioned the question about how she was dressed at the party Jaime could barely believe it. Roberto finally told Alonso of the progress in Carlos' case, including the new suspect. They thought they could prove Carlos innocent. Jaime told him that with all respect he'd rather not hear about this because of how Carlos had hurt his daughter.
  • Ricardo explained that Alonso was handling the appeal but he and Leonardo would also be at the tribunal. There was enough proof of Marrufo's malfeasance in the case for them to win and to send the raptists to prison. He then gave Hugo the psychiatrist's business card. Alejandra told Alexa that her help was needed and she agreed. Alejandra hugged her and left with Ricardo. Alexa was still unsure that this would work, but Hugo was a lttle more optimistic.
  • Carlos and Alan began to argue about the foundation and El Ciego, who wanted his money cleaned yesterday. Marrufo's secretary was calling again and Carlos told his secretary to put her off again by saying he was in a meeting. When she left the office Alan asked “Why? Isn't he your friend?” and Carlos told him what was happening and that Jaime was involved. If he came near this it would screw up his chances with Alejandra and he was not prepared to do that.
  • Could Carlos have also realized that taking on Marrufo against Vega was a major conflict of interest? Where would that leave him if Leonardo and Roberto dropped him as a client?
  • Gustavo and Victoria finished up for the night just as Roberto came in. She told Roberto that they had been discussing the case his father brought in and he invited her to his place to show her his etchings share a bottle of fine whiskey with her. She declined but suggested they go to hers. He talked about picking up some nice fruit, etc., for breakfast and she asked when he got up in the morning. He said that it depended on how tired he was from the previous night, but usually at eight. She said then he should call her when he got up and she would come over. She then picked up her bag and left. Roberto smiled.
  • Roberto must have all the patience in the world, unlike his colleagues who mst be salivating at the thought that he and Victoria would eventually do the horizontal tango.
  • Carlos elaborated on his earlier explanation. He had fed the information about Marrufo's bribe to Benjamín, thereby providing the proof of corruption. Nobody could help him now. Alan was to work on the foundation. Carlos' new case, however, needed his attention. He was unable so far to find a motive for Imelda's ex-boyfriend to kill her or her brother, so he said he would have to go to the crime scene. They walked out.
  • Juan found Fernanda on the couch when he got home, slaving away over a hot laptop. She asked him about the case and he said that they got Pedro on the suspect list. It was the most complicated case he had ever worked on. She said she still had things to do as well.
  • We can leave them to their peace, which is a kind the others don't yet know.
  • Alejandra went back to Ricardo's apartment. On the way he had told her about the phone call to his children and he had been a little disturbed by Federico's reaction when he said he could not visit that evening. They talked about how children sometimes don't understand how hard their parents work to give them everything. She said that he reacted badly because he missed his father. She then picked up the book-shaped box. He tried to take it but she opened it and he took out the garter, saying it was his Good Luck Charm. The kiss was followed by two Te amo's.
  • Juan made coffee for Fernanda but by the time it was ready she had fallen asleep on the couch. He closed her laptop and put it on the table, then sat on the couch next to her. He picked up her hand and was about to kiss it when Susanna returned. She was happy to see this and told him – in whispers – not to move.
  • Victoria and Robert shared a drink and more flirtation in between discussions of her latest case. Finally, right after she told Roberto for the 2957th time this would never happen
it looked like he was getting to first base.
  • While that was happening it looked like Ricardo was about to go to second base when Alejandra took out the file about Alexa's case so they could review it.  They talked about Alexa and how difficult this will be.
  • Carlos and Alan arrived at the crime scene. They put on gloves and walked through it.
  • Roberto and Victoria looked close to the edge... but nothing happened.  She said that she could not imagine falling in love with him because he was a good friend. She went through the list of other good things before telling him that he was a womanizer and didn't take anything seriously. Again, he asked her to give him a chance and again she told him to calm down.
  • After they finished reviewing the case Alejandra picked up her purse to leave. Ricardo asked her to stay the night.  While she didn't answer verbally, it definitely looked like a “Yes.”
When setting traps it's always effective to have good weapons or the right bait. Alonso Vega has the right weapons to use against Judge Marrufo. Elena baits her trap with her innocent children while El Ciego baited his with dirty money. Their prey will fight back. Until next we meet Behind Mansion Walls, I'm Christopher Mason.

I don't feel sorry for Carlos because he stepped right into this when he should have known better. However, Alejandra is now in El Ciego's sights and she will end up in danger when she isn't even Carlos' fiancee anymore.

Wonderful theme to pull all the disparate episodes in this one together. Lots of Tender Traps being set as well. As you noted, Veronica will not fall for a looong time but looks like Alejandra is ready to be wrapped up and tucked away for the night.

Loved the intro:

I'm Christopher Mason. Rats come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. They are both scavengers and predators and they respect neither age nor assets. In our story tonight we will see several get very close to or fall into the traps set for them.

And was delighted with the picture of Christopher at the piano. Wonderful screen shot also of Carlos realizing the doom of his Faustian bargain.

While I know many find Juan annoying, I'm enjoying the innocent romance between him and Fernanda. Evidently Christopher is too--"We can leave them to their peace which is a kind the others don't yet know."

I like this two because they evidently don't need a lot of material bells and whistles. They enjoy hard work, but are content with their modest way of life. A pretty surefire recipe for happiness.

Maybe my favorite of all was your clever baseball transitions--Roberto getting to first base, Ricardo to second. Nice way to tie the two scenes together.

Well done as always Clever Lady. Thanks to Christopher as well. Growing quit fond of him.

BTW, Mr Mason does play the piano.

He's the host of the true-crime series Behind Mansion Walls. All 39 episodes are currently on Youtube. There is re-enactment footage and comments from police, lawyers, etc., who were involved in those cases of murder among the rich and shameless. His wardrobe is eccentric; wait until you see the next set of screen grabs.

If Juan and Fernanda are going to go the distance they will need their own place. Both of their mothers are a little too close for comfort.

I hope we see the tribunal. I want to see Marrufo squirm.

Thanks Urban

I have 0 sympathy for Carlos too. He knew what he was getting to, now he's just another one of El ciego's puppets.

Juan and Fer are just not my cup of tea. I'm more interested in Bobby and Vicky. I'm also lowkey interested in Brick and Ale;)

Victoria and Roberto are definitely the most interesting potential couple in this series. However, is he even capable of fidelity? We know nothing about his parents' relationship.

Or hers, for that matter. I don't know if I'm speculating or if I remember this, but were her parents divorced when she was a child?

How old are Elena's kids supposed to be. We know that Rick & Elena were married for 10 years but the children are not his; therefore, the children are older than 10 years old. We don't know at what point Rick entered the picture...perhaps he met Elena when she was pregnant with Natalia or fresh from giving birth to Natalia. We know that Federico is older than Natalia. So let's say Natalia is 11...Federico has to be at least 12 years old. What 12 year old boy is throwing tantrums like that because Dad has to work late and can't come over to play? I would maybe expect that behavior from Natalia because she is younger but she's not even throwing tantrums like Federico is.

I just feel like Elena's kids are being written as younger than they actually are and maybe they shouldn't have said that Rick & Elena were married for 10 years, they should've picked a lower number (like 7 or 8)

Thanks, Urban! I read the first paragraph and just could not wait for the rest...zipped through it so fast I had to read it again.

Got a good giggle over "show her his etchings" -- where did that expression come from, anyway? It was quite common when I was younger.

(Jardinera, I left comments on yesterday's recap as well. You gals rock!)

Truly love the Christopher Mason treatment! Great openiing once again. Thanks for a good and detailed recap cuz somehow I missed Jaime's surprise at the business with questions about Alexa's form of dress and the tape Malrufo denied into evidencia.

Blue and Nina: Tks for the comments also. : ? ))

Kids' ages? I think I remember something about one of them being three when they married? Suppose that was the boy and Natie might have been just a baby. Maybe the boy's just big for his age of 12 or so? But kids definitely can be that bad even at 13 IMO, especially with a mother that permissive. Perhaps the kid was just not as nasty badmouth as kids up here are known to be and shown to be in movies and tv.

I remember Ric mentioning that Fede was 3 and Natie was barely 1 when he and Elena met so they must be 13 and 11/10 respectively.

But I still get this feeling Ale is not that much into this relationship as Ric is. He's so open about his feelings and she holds back somehow. Or maybe it's just me.

Federico's tantrum was normal for a 12-13 year old, especially with parents in a divorce situation. I think it looks off because he's the oldest of the two, and also the boy- generally people don't like to see childish behavior in boys past the age of ten. Regardless, for their age, Elena's kids are way too coddled by Ricardo, and Elena is also at fault because she emotionally manipulates them. If they keep treating the kids in the same way they've been doing so far, they won't really mature.

I actually don't like the Victoria/Roberto pairing, I guess it could be the playboy thing, but she's also very callous when it comes to relationships with men. It seems like she's going to get burned first before they end up together.

Thanks for the recap, and you do a good job in selecting the screenshots!

Thanks, Urban. Bravo! Your recap is must-read storytelling. My faves:

We can leave them to their peace which is a kind the others don't yet know.

Carlos looked like he finally realized what a Faustian bargain he had made.

Looks like Ale and Ric are finally about to launch. I think they're cute together.

Juan and Fer are cute too. Seems like both are virgins and appreciate each other. JudyB, ITA everything you said about them.

Finally, right after she told Roberto for the 2957th time this would never happen...

Instead of "telling" Vic he'd been committed IF she'd let him, he needs to "show" her by ending the bar hopping for one-night stands and threeways. We haven't seen Vicki dating anyone besides the guy at the office party who was no more than a cover date. She hasn't slept with anyone since the show started.

Got a kick out of Carlos squirming with El Ciego and not taking the Malrufo's call. The Mighty Carlos is in deep s*** and knows it.

ITA Ric's kids are annoying. Do they not have friends to play with or homework to do during the week? Expecting a divorced parent without custody to drop by regularly on weekday evenings is not realistic.

I forgot to mention, I love the screenshot of Sonia looking like she's sucking a lemon!

Elena has babied her kids so that they are less mature emotionally than they should be. Since she is a narcissist her motive is to maintain control over them. She has been gaslighting them ever since she became aware of any possibility that Ricardo will get interested in any other woman.

I'm glad you all love the screenshots. However when I switch to the new computer I will need some version of Microsoft Paint to continue to do them. Does Apache Open Office have an equivalent?

Urban this was a juicy recap of a juicy episode. Thank you.

I think Robert and Vicky would be good together. But He Better be serious cuz if he messes this up he wont get another chance.
She's not like those women he toys with. He messes this up he would have
Messed up a good thing. He Better be
Sure before he dives in and she Better be Sure before she lets him dive in.

Carlos is now finding out he is not in charge of his life anymore. That can
Hit cha rather hard when you realize you've sold yourselfish soul to old lucifer. He is really in deep sh*t and
Dived into that cesspool with such a
Determination. and that's what's going to put Ally in danger cuz they will find out she is his muse or should I say his obsession, cuz that's got nothing to do with love. I agree
With mason he's fallen into his own trap. Poor rat.

Hurrraaaaay for Rick and ally, they better enjoy it cuz here comes trouble
And she's blond and clingy.

Thank Urban & Mr Mason.
