Por Amar Sin Ley, 7/6/18 Chapter 92 Viernes: Season Finale - The Pursuit of Justice

Chapter 92, Season Finale: The Pursuit of Justice
I'm Christopher Mason. The practice of law is often tedious. It can involve reams of paper on a single motion, many postponements of decisions, and often arbitrary rules of evidence. It can also involve danger. Closing a case doesn't always mean that it's the end and even an important victory can be followed by terrible tragedy. That is an occupational hazard in the pursuit of justice.
  • Isabel drove out in Gustavo's car right into El Gato's line of fire.
He and his accomplice emptied their high-powered rifles into the car through its windows and doors on the driver's side in a scene reminiscent of the causeway scene in The Godfather.
The two killers then noticed their mistake as they bolted from the car to the blue pickup truck to get away just as Gustavo ran out of the house.
He cried out in Greek tragedy anguish as he realized his beloved wife was dead
only to then discover that his only child had also been savagely murdered.
  • The police arrived shortly and one of them immediately called for assistance. Gustavo cried for a long time, holding Isabel and not yet believing that she and Luis were dead.
  • Gustavo handed case files to Roberto, Victoria, and Ricardo for discussion on how many new lawyers they would need for this caseload.
Ricardo's cell rang and seeing that it was Gustavo, he answered. He went into shock and asked where he was. When he ended the call he lost his cool for a moment, then told the others what happened. They immediately left the office.
  • Down in his favorite parking garage El Ciego let his henchmen know that they had seriously screwed up. El Gato told him that it was an accident, which only provoked El Ciego to draw his pistol and aim at his head at point-blank range. He ordered him to kneel and El Gato asked for another chance. After moving closer and shouting more insults to his right-hand man,
El Ciego turned around, took two steps, then quickly did an about-face and shot the other bald man in the right shoulder. He then told El Gato that he would kill him if he screwed up again. Then he ordered him to come with him and yelled back to the fourth man to leave the other one behind.
  • Is there any chance that this man will be found alive? Could he be the one to rat out El Ciego? Usually there is no honor among thieves... or killers.
  • Gustavo's colleagues met him at the police station and found him prostrate with grief. His shirt was blood-stained and he was crying as he explained that they had gone back home for Luis' sports shoes. Although he had not seen the killers he knew they were connected to Ramiro and Joaquin Durantes. He swore revenge on the killers, whoever they were. Alejandra and Victoria cried with him while Alonso and Ricardo managed to keep stiff upper lips.
  • Juan found out that the bodies had been released. Roberto was certain that this was the work of organized crime. Juan said that this was a supremely brutal crime and Gustavo did not deserve this. Roberto was determined that this was not going to stop them from seeking justice. They left the courthouse area.
  • The next day Gustavo wept alone in the funeral chapel as he touched the coffins of his wife and son.
He finally sat on one of the sofas, saying that this would not stop there.
Alonso and Ricardo arrived. Gustavo said he could not believe that his wife and son were in coffins. Ricardo hugged him, saying he would feel the same in his position. He told him that he was not alone. Alonso tried to assure him that they would find the killers and make them pay, but Gustavo became hysterical and said “What good will that do? It won't bring them back! The one who should be dead is me!” Alonso and Ricardo restrained him, saying that they will not stop until the killers are found and made to pay. Gustavo was about to collapse, but they helped him up just as the other mourners began arriving.
Alejandra hugged Gustavo, who managed to remain on his feet. She then talked with the others; all were certain that this was connected to Gustavo's victory over Ramiro Durantes.
Elena then arrived in her black catsuit and FM stilettos, asking for the details. Roberto said it was an act of revenge because of the case.
Alejandra said that this was an unjust consequence.
Elena agreed and went to comfort Gustavo, who cried harder.
He cried until they all left, with his colleagues telling him to count on them to get justice.
  • Alejandra must have remembered that Elena wore that same catsuit to Joel's funeral months before. She had every reason to suspect her motive for doing so again.
  • Alejandra went home with her parents, both of whom were as shocked as she was. Paula said that she should learn to live life fully while she can. She hugged her father, telling him she loved him. He said the same, then told Paula he loved her. He took his leave, saying he would help them get Joaquin Durantes. Alejandra thanked him for all his help and advice and he told her he would always have that.
He hugged her one more time and left. Paula and Alejandra went to make tea.
  • Jaime started out to his car but was accosted by an armed man wearing a black hood. Two others appeared, place a black bag over Jaime's head, dragged him into the blue pickup truck, then took off.
  • Gustavo went home alone, hearing the voices of his lost loved ones echo in his head as he sat on the couch and picked up the eye patch worn by his son during their game of pirates. He cried harder.
  • El Gato fetched his boss to see that he had successfully kidnapped Jaime Ponce.
Another accomplice removed the black bag to reveal that Jaime was blindfolded with pads and duct tape. Jaime said “My family doesn't have money.”
“Who talked about your family?” El Ciego asked. “What we want is for you not to put your noses into what doesn't concern you.”
    “It's Durantes' orders, isn't it?”
El Ciego laughed, then signalled to El Gato, who clapped his hands hard against Jaime's ears. As the third man cringed El Ciego made a call, looking for further instructions.
  • Over tea Alejandra told Paula that life was too short. She was going to make sure to make the best of it with the people she cared about. She took out her cell to call Ricardo and Paula said not to call, to tell him face to face. Alejandra agreed, then her cell rang. She did not recognize the number. When she answered El Ciego said “We have kidnapped your father. Coorperate or we kill him.”
At the sound of her incredulous reaction Jaime shouted “Daughter, don't fall into their trap!” only to feel the grip of one of the henchmen on his head, as though he was going to break his neck with a twist.
“Don't do anything to my father! I implore you. Don't –” she said.
“Then tell your friends, the other lawyers, and [???].   It's you or one of your friends. If you don't want any harm to come to your father, don't make me angry! Don't tell the police and you will answer whenever I call. Is that clear?” He grinned as he ended the call.

Paula asked what happened and Alejandra told her that Jaime had been kidnapped. She then called Alonso.
  • Ricardo went to Elena's apartment after the funeral and she was still shocked. She knew just enough about Joaquin Durantes to be afraid. She began worrying about her children, saying she wouldn't know what to do if anything were to happen to them. Ricardo told her that this was why he and the rest of the firm were going after Durantes. She worried about their safety, but rejected the idea of bodyguards because of the attention it would draw. Isabel and Luis had been killed in broad daylight, so Elena concluded that the only way to keep the children safe would be to take them far away. Ricardo didn't like this at first but recognized that it was likely the only way. Elena had a friend in Vancouver and that would be a safe place. Ricardo finally agreed to this and they hugged over it. Then his cell rang. It was Alonso and Ricardo said he would be right over.
  • Juan told Fernanda and Susanna about Gustavo. Susanna said “To lose a spouse is sad, but to lose a child...there is nothing sadder in the world.” Juan speculated that there would be more of this to come.
  • Juan needs to make plans to guard his mother's and fiancée's safety. Now would be a good time to send them up north as well.
  • Alejandra almost became hysterical as Paula tried calming her down. Ricardo arrived and said they should go to the office and figure out what to do. She was afraid to do anything because of the risk to her father. Paula said that since her father was always on the side of justice he was always at risk for anything like this. Ricardo was sure that Jaime would approve of their actions. He promised Alejandra in the name of his love for her that he would get her father home safe and sound and the evil ones will pay.
  • El Gato poured something down Jaime's throat and almost laughed. Jaime thanked him and asked what they were going to do to him. “If your friends cooperate, nothing will happen,” was the reply.
“I will not facilitate your job,” Jaime said. “If you expect my friends to give in to your whims you better kill me because I never help criminals. So kill me! Kill me!”
    El Gato said nothing.
  • Alonso arrived at Paula's house to try to reassure her and Alejandra. Carlos was not far behind to enquire about Gustavo. He had not yet heard about Jaime, but when Alonso explained he started asking Alejandra whether she had heard from the kidnappers. Alejandra said she was waiting for them to call again but they hadn't and she didn't know what to do. Carlos offered to investigate and started asking questions about whether the call came from a private number and where did they take Jaime. Ricardo told him to stop, as Alejandra was very upset. Carlos tried defending his actions and then Paula told him to stop. She then asked Alejandra to help her make some more tea. Alejandra agreed and kept her cell phone in hand. Alonso went with them, leaving the two banty roosters alone in the drawing room. Paula went back and told Carlos – and Ricardo – off. Alejandra needed both their help and they had better forget their differences for now. Both agreed.
  • It seemed that nothing new happened that night. Alejandra's cell did not ring while Jaime remained tied up and blindfolded in his unknown location.
The following morning Victoria and Roberto arrived at Paula's house to give their support.
Later Gustavo visited the cemetary, not caring that he was getting soaked in the rain.
Jaime came to, bleeding from the nose and with blood on his shirt front.
Alonso sat at his desk and had a stiff drink. He drained the liquor out of the rocks glass and threw it at the statue of justice that sat on his desk.
The glass shattered, but Dame Justice stood firm, armor and sword intact, and scales in hand.
  • The next morning Carlos poured himself some whiskey, neat, and swallowed it. His doorbell rang. It was El Ciego, who came at Carlos' request. Carlos said he needed his help finding out who had kidnapped his “father-in-law.”
El Ciego asked if he was speaking of the father of the girl he was kissing in the photo he picked up. Carlos told him that the man's name was Jaime Ponce and that he suspected that Joaquin Durantes was responsible for this. El Ciego was cooler than a north wind, commenting on “very evil people” and reminded him what business he was in. Carlos told him he would pay whatever ransom they demanded but that he needed Jaime to be freed. El Ciego clearly enjoyed this situation.
“People like this have no heart. Negotiations will not be so easy. The usual bargain is a life for a life.”
“I'm willing to do whatever it takes. I need you to help me.”
    “Are you sure?”
    “Yes. With my life.”
“Very well, Counselor. I'll see what I can do.” He left, saying “Hope you're well. Be calm.” Once he was in the hallway he took out his cell and made a call.
“Don't do anything yet. We stand to benefit very well from this.
  • El Ciego is both a sociopath and a psychopath. He enjoyed watching Carlos make an offer he couldn't refuse. He probably will also enjoy telling this to Joaquin Durantes over a bottle of expensive Scotch.

  • Alonso entered the conference room where Carmen and the lawyers were waiting for him. They each held some black folders.
Alonso talked about how when he founded the firm it was with the intention of getting the best lawyers together in one place to fight for justice when people had stopped believing in it and little by little they succeeded. However, he had never imagined that this would put their lives in danger. He intended to make Joaquin Durantes pay for the murder of Gustavo's family and the kidnapping of Jaime, but he had decided to do it alone. He did not want the others' lives to be at risk.
He therefore decided to dissolve the firm for everyone's safety. The black folders were their settlement packages. He then announced that the meeting was over.
No one was in agreement. Each told his or her reason for the objection. Ricardo said that this should have been put to a partners' vote. He, Roberto, and Victoria all voted against closing the firm. When Alonso reminded them that they were all in danger,
Victoria tore hers up and said that their work was not done. There were too many evil doers to be dealt with. She asked the others their opinion. Ricardo asked everyone to raise their hands if they wanted to stay.
The vote was unanimous. Alonso looked around the room and tried to assume his usual positive demeanor.
“Alright. Now let's get back to work.”
The pursuit of justice often leads to many places that no one expects, including the mouth of Hell. Gustavo Soto won his fraud case against Ramiro Durantes only to lose his wife and son to a gangland slaying. Alejandra Ponce discovered a client dead at the hands of her ex and now fears for her kidnapped father's life. Ricardo Bustamante finally was recognized as the legal father of Elena's children only to have to lose them for their own safety. Carlos Ibarra barely escaped being framed for murder but still does not know that his cousin Alan did the crime and paid to send another man to prison. He will be in the same office with Alan every day without knowing he will have to watch his back.  Nor is he aware of the connexion between El Ciego and Joaquin Durantes. Will anyone find this out before there is another death? That will wait a little while. Until next season when we meet again Behind Mansion Walls of Justice, I'm Christopher Mason.

It's a wrap for now. Season 2 is in production for almost 4 weeks now and here's hoping the writers learn something about legal procedures. See you guys tomorrow.

As always, love your recaps and your screenshots--your Christopher Mason persona and the way you craft your prologue, finale and linking paragraphs. You always find a unifying theme that weaves throughout all the disparate events.

I particularly liked what you wrote when Alonso, in despair and anger, threw his empty whiskey glass against the statuette on his desk:

The glass shattered, but Dame Justice stood firm, armor and sword intact, and scales in hand.

Great way to symbolize the underlying message of the series.

That being said, I absolutely hated the finale. There is enough real life cruelty, violence and bloodshed. This is not what I want to watch for entertainment.

But you did a wonderful job on what, for me, was a terribly depressing episode. Not helped by the fact that I was at a funeral for a newborn yesterday. Died in his young mother's arms (of a heart problem) after only four days of life. Parents, grandparents, friends, absolutely devastated. And then to see this. Just no.

There were good moments along the way but this is the worst ending of any show that I have watched.

Ay yi yi, not your fault. Thank you Urban for all your dedicated work. You are a treasure.

UA: Was Isabel one of the Charlie's Angels ?

Judy: I feel horrible for Gustavo to lose both Isabel & Lucas like that.

Judy, I understand how you feel about this, especially after having attended the funeral of a newborn baby. It would be difficult to imagine anything sadder than that family's loss

Since this isn't a novela in the usual sense with a final ending, I was expecting something intense that would carry over to a new season. As the last six weeks went on I didn't expect to do the usual Karmageddon discussion, which clearly is only appropriate when the story has a final ending. The only thing that really shocked me about the murders of Isabel and Luis was how explicitly they were shown.

The grief of one father is then followed up by the kidnapping of another paternal figure and the frustrations of two more.

The symbolism of the Dame Justice statue was crystal clear. When she survived without even a chip I knew that this was the message to Alonso that Justice is the ultimate good and to the audience that one should never give up on her.

Still confused...was Roberto only interested in Victoria for sex....nothing more? Hoping he would change his leopard spots and commit to her.....maybe next season...

Don't know, Anon. But Victoria knows him well enough to suspect that this was all he wanted. She is his Mount Everest and once conquered where is the thrill?

I said it earlier this week: The boy needs a shrink. He and Juan are polar opposites in that Juan had a loving mother whom he is still too close to while Roberto lost his before he even knew her.

As I see it, Victoria either can stay out of reach or take the supreme risk of getting it on with Roberto, giving him the sexual thrill of a lifetime.... and then walk away to make him chase her or not. But if she truly couldn't stand to face him in the office after that staying out of reach is her only choice. That's Too Close For Comfort.

I wonder if any of Alonso's children will show up for Season 2?

We know they will need to hire 4 more lawyers to replace LOLBenjamin.

I think Benjamin's story isn't over. He will be very upset to be in Reclusorio Sur while Carlos is walking free. He may also encounter that guy who tried to shoot him at the beginning of the show.

If Gustavo had been killed, Isabel & Luis wouldn't have been on Season 2 anyway.

Elena is escaping to Canada because current US policy wouldn't be letting her or the kids in. If this novela had aired 2 years earlier they'd be escaping to California.

She did have a point, though: if they murdered Isabel & Luis in broad daylight they are capable of anything and bodyguards wouldn't help. The other lawyers & their families need to take heed, especially after Alejandra's dad got kidnapped.

Elena will be back in time to spoil the romance between Ricardo & Sofia (who will be a much more worthy adversary than Alejandra).

Juan also needs to take precautions for Fernanda & Susana.

For being such a smart lawyer, Carlos is kind of dumb. He showed no curiousity as to who would be framing him for Patricia's murder and now he's begging El Ciego to get his "father in law" back. Now you've exposed Alejandra for real.

Gustavo has to be back for Season 2 to get revenge on Jacinto. Isabel & Luis were his life and now that they're dead, he has nothing to lose.

Thanks, Urban. You and Christopher did a fantastic job recapping the season finale, which is really the premiere for Season 2. I second JudyB on the great line about Dame Justice standing firm. Although this was the opposite of the happy closure I've come to expect with TNs, I applaud the actors on good performances last night. Urban, very well-chosen screenshots. Though sad, the one of Gustavo and Ric, forehead to forehead in grief and comforting, was outstanding.

JudyB, I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. May they find comfort in the circle of support and love surrounding them.

Roberto loves Victoria. She is the only woman he goes on and on about to his dad. His constant chasing Victoria and at the same time denying that he wants a relationship is his problem. Reminds me of the song "I'm Not in Love" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtBHfxU2wmc.

Since Carlos has the inside edge to getting Jaime freed, I can see him working this (assuming Jaime gets freed) to have Ale back in his corner. He is genuinely hurt to see Ale hurt, but that won't stop him from using any possible hero-dom to hang onto Ale.

I will check out the premiere of Season 2. After that, I’ll see how it goes. Fingers-crossed they hire a legal consultant (Irene!). And I'd like to see Ale stay in Season 2, but with more gumption.

What an ending. I really felt bad for Gus, he didn't deserve to loose his family like that.

Maybe Elena will be gone for a year at most and will come back to surprise Ricardo with the kids, but this time Sofia will open the door with his shirt on.

UrbanA: Again, you did a terrific job with somewhat unusual material for a tn finale. Your take on the pluses and minuses at the end and your including the emphasis on Lady Justice were spot on. Of course, I will definitely miss ol' Chris! That being said, ITA with the others who said this finale was really disappointing if not boring. Yeah, I know that they wanted to leave us wanting more, and I do when it comes to Victoria and Roberto. The rest leave me luke warm at best. I admit I for the first time ever actually FF>> through so much of the funereal and the Ale/Jaime/Paula B.S. BUT, we still don't know who will take the 5 other legal spots in the office. I hope there is a really handsome and sharp dude to give Roberto a run for his money with Vicki. Don't know yet if Sofia will cause Ale grief or pair up with Carlos instead of Ric.
========
Ava: I had a real LOL moment with your take on Exlena's return only to find Sophia in one of Ric's shirts this time instead. Still chuckling over that one.
==========
Judy B.: After the news about Carlos, hearing about a newborn death and all the grief at the end of this tn, I am as totally torn up as you over the dreary ending with a gruesome death of a child. This fin was the last thing I needed to watch. We all know that TNs are generally watched because at the end the unjust get their come-uppance as deserved, the two main couples find happiness for ever after and NO child is brutally murdered. I gave up on Telemundo's El Señor de los Cielos fifteen minutes in with the dad/protagonist/lead bad guy telling his young kid to go brutally shoot and kill his sister's pet dog to be a man. That assassination of Gustavo's little son was no better. Fushi!
====
Blue Lass: I will also miss reading your comedic take on these things. You have a choice talent. I don't watch CQM but hopefully will get to read your take on future tn's.

What are the loose ends/unanswered questions that might have been cleared up by the end of la primer temporada?

Why Alan really killed Patricia Linares himself
Why Alan REALLY was skimming cash from the firm
Dorantes paid to have all the Vega lawyers killed but El Ciego didn't comply
Why, with all the empty offices now at Vega--not to mention the free catered lunches from Susana--didn't Juan get an office of his own--or even a desk at least?

I know there are more but I cannot think of them right now.

Thanks UA! I wasn’t able to watch these last episodes because I’m in Mexico right now. I know I didn’t comment much on this TN but here I am.

If there wasn’t a second season coming soon I would’ve hated this finale. I’m not always fond of cliffhangers. Although I did like that final scene when all our remaining lawyers vowed to stay at the firm and not leave Alonso alone to handle things. He had good intentions to keep them and their families safe but all of them, especially Gustavo and Alejandra, want justice.

I’m amazed Univision didn’t censor the murder scene. Watching it gave me flashbacks To Vicente’s suicide in CET. Gustavo didn’t deserve that especially when it seemed like he and Isabel were on good terms again.

I’ll be waiting for the premiere date of the second season. I know that La Piloto 2 already has its premiere date.

Thanks Urban and all of the recappers for your dedication. It is much appreciated. Univision and Dish show no sign of resolving their differences. I guess one of these days I will have to call up Dish and ask "Now what". I mainly watch Univision but I have access to a whole number of programs.

I'm here to repeat my plea that Dish subscribers call 1-800-500-4252 and let them know you want Univision back. Dish has no reason to pay Univision less than English-language stations. According to information from Neilsen, Univision is the third most popular network on Dish regardless of language; Univision Deportes is the second most popular sports network on Dish regardless of language; Univision's channels are watched by 60% of subscribers to Dish Latino. This link goes to an infographic posted on Facebook.

If Dish won't take action, you can also look into the Univision Now app (which has current shows, but also full seasons of previous shows) or using an antenna if you're in an area where it's available that way.

This is quite the episode, you in all your writing Splender made it even better.

I must say the scenes with gus crying
Got to me. He should get an award for that part alone. But you know what, so when he went back to the house and was
Hearing the joyous conversations Luis
Was having and isa, I have to wonder if that agony he was in is also the guilt of all that time he wasted with
That affair for awhole year+. And he gets her back and a guy named death takes her away from him. I think that pain is a whole lot worst for him than it was for her when she found out about him. But she forgave and that's all that matters. Now get The sons of bitches that did it in season 2.

Carlos the crook wants to look good in
Ally's eyes, so he goes to the devil he sold his soul to not knowing he's the one behind the murder of mother-n-
Child. He's just getting deeper and deeper into hell. And all for a woman
That does not want him. He's obsessed.
It would be easy for cousin Alan to take him out cuz he's not even paying attention. Stupid carlos the crook. He
Does dress rather nice, not gonna do him any good in prison or the grave.

It's good Ricky got Elena and kiddos out of harms way. Now thanks to Carlos
Carelessness ally is in danger since psycho/socialpath knows he cares about
Her.

Lonny is gonna have his hands full in season 2. Enjoyed the patio patio.
Hope 2 is just as good or better.

Thank you Urban, and all the other
RECAPPERS that made us display all kinds of different emotions. You are
The gifted. That sounds like a science
Fiction movie, but y'all got it.
Thank you all.
"Until next season when we meet again behind Mansion Walls of Justice, Im Christopher Mason" I like that ending.

I had a great team for this and I hope this model of recapping isn't going away. Jardinera, Anita, and Blue Lass, you all did a fantastic job with this somewhat challenging series that isn't a standard novela and that presented some unique difficulties that I hope the writers will clean up for Season 2.

My only real complaint about this series is the writers' failure to provide legal verisimilitude. Otherwise, the casting, character development, photography, and music were mostly very good.

As disturbing as the murders and some of the other crimes were I'm glad they weren't sanitized. Since Victoria was looking at a file on femicide, this is an issue I hope they take on next season.

Urban, Jardinera, Anita, and Blue Lass, muchísimas gracias! Your recaps were must-reads for me. No matter what the show put us through, your writing was riveting and a bright spot in my day.

Anon207, I agree Benji's story isn't over. Also, although Oli and Leo left for NYC, I can see those two helping their beloved friends and bufete that is in such deep crisis. Reportedly, Season 2 will be more international with cases in the USA. I did wind up caring about most of the characters.

Urban, thank you so much for this amazing final recap and for your hard work and dedication to provide us with such clever and profound recaps, replete with very fitting screen grabs. You truly are a very talented writer and I am going to miss my weekly dose of Christopher Mason and his interesting thoughts.

I have very ambivalent feelings about this telenovela, but have to agree with JudyB about the finale. It was indeed one of the most depressing and bad finales I have ever seen.
While it is true that in real life good innocent people sometimes meet cruel faith, the horrendously violent deaths is not what most of us telenovela viewers want to see in a finale of a telenovela. While I can somehow understand the need to kill Isabel in order to establish the revenge plot line for Gustavo, I don't understand why it had to be so graphic, bloody and horrifyingly violent. Did we really need to see her hit by bullets over and over again?! Why couldn't they just show us the car being shot at and then Gustavo finding Isabel dead?
And Louisito's death was completely unnecessary and uncalled for! Isabel's death was bad enough for a finale, but to also witness a death of a child is too much for a standard telenovela viewer such as myself. In all my years of watching telenovelas, I only saw a child die once on a telenovela and the death wasn't during the finale. I am referring to the death of Ana Cristina's adopted child in Entre el Amor y el Odio and I cried rivers of tears during that scene and wondered what were the writers thinking in torturing us viewers like that.
I never thought that PASL, the most unrealistic telenovela I have ever seen, would suddenly decide to get real and to do it in the worst possible way by killing a child in a finale.
Granted, this plot allowed Sergio Basanes to show his amazing acting talent. I cried like a baby through all of his grief scenes, but it was the finale, damn it, and this viewer expected some hope, fun and maybe even a little love, not blood, tears, dead children, break ups and suffering for the entire hour!

Irene

And not only did we suffer through double death of Isabel and Louisito, but after suffering for 90 episodes of Brick and Alejandra shenanigans and hoping for a resolution of this most unromantic romance, we got bubkes, zilch, zero, nada...on this front! Alejandra needs some alone time?!Really writers, that's all you got for us!

And don't let me started on the stupidity of suddenly making Carlos the hero that is ready to pay with his life to bring Jaime back to Alejandra. I always liked Carlos better than Brick, but he is no hero and to suddenly make him selfless and goody good is absurd.

And Rob and Vicky, what the hell?!90 episodes waiting for their romance only to get this idiotic finale, whereas Leo and Olivia, the worst, most contrived couple ever existing in a telenovela, get a lavish wedding lasting half an episode after dating for an episode and a half.

Irene

Dish is claiming that Univision wants a 75% increase in rates but satisfaction with their offering on DISH has dropped by 30%. So the standoff continues....

And all that ruckus about Brick and his kids for all those episodes, only for said kids to go away?!

And Leo the Mexican criminal defense attorney getting head-hunted by a big US law firm?!From all the ridiculous plotlines, this one takes the cake! I can say with absolute certainty that no one in a big (or small, or medium sized) US law firm would head-hunt a Mexican criminal defense attorney (or a criminal defense attorney from any other country). It doesn't matter that said defense attorney is one of the best in his country. It would never ever happen, even if said defense attorney were the best in his country or in the universe.
Criminal defense is country-specific (unlike, for example, public international law).It doesn't matter that Leo is the best in Mexico, because Mexico has a totally different criminal law.
As far as we know, Leo got a standard Mexican law degree, he never studied in the US and of course never took the bar exam in the US.
Under such circumstances, he is absolutely useless to American law firms. He will need to take the bar to be able to practice, and it is extremely difficult and time consuming (months and months of intensive studies). In some states, he would even have to go to law school in order to take a bar exam. In any case, it is very difficult for a foreign lawyer to study for a bar exam without going to law school first.

Taking all the above into consideration, it's illogical that a US law firm would head-hunt a Mexican lawyer, wait for years until he is able to practice in the US only to get a newly minted, inexperienced lawyer (because in the US, that's what Leo is going to be, even though he was the best in Mexico). Why go to all that trouble (not to mention visa application for Leo and his wife etc..) if there are tens of thousands of American newly minted lawyers to choose from, ready to work immediately, fresh from law school.

It doesn't make any sense, especially as far as criminal law is concerned. Even if Leo braves the studies and passes the bar exam, there is the obvious problem of him not being bilingual, which is quite important in criminal law, where every word matters. And I hate to say it and it shouldn't be like this, but the reality is that having a heavy accent can be a real problem for someone practicing criminal law, even if he is completely fluent in English and is a great lawyer. I am talking about perception by the jurors of what the lawyer has to say, and many defendants would think twice before hiring a lawyer with heavy accent because of how this lawyer will be perceived by the jurors. It's the same as having someone with a speech impediment representing you during your criminal trial. A lot of people wouldn't take the risk of hiring a lawyer with a speech impediment, even if he is very good. Again, in a perfect and just world, it shouldn't be like this, but we do not live in a perfect world, and unfortunately such things as accent, appearance, nationality etc.. do matter when one chooses a service provider.
And I can't fault the defendants that would not risk hiring a lawyer with an obvious Mexican accent because jurors have biases, sometimes explicit, but mostly implicit and the biases affect the evaluation of what they see and hear.

The bottom line is that even joining Lawyers without borders or joining International Criminal Court would have been more believable than being head-hunted by a top US law firm.

I love these law-savvy comments Irene. Adds greatly to my enjoyment, especially as I am terribly disenchanted by this telenovela due to the unnecessarily graphic, brutal, obscene ending. Go get 'em girl!

But again, while disenchanted with the novela, greatly appreciative of our recappers who are intelligent, witty, articulate, devoted and all working without a peso of pay. Truly a labor of love. Stars in your crowns, each and every one of you, Urban Anthropologist, Jardinera, Anita and Blue Lass.

I don't know that Steve was necessarily being flip. I do think that current events in the US had the writers sending Elena & the kids to Canada rather than the US. I think in other circumstances, Elena & the kids would've fled to Los Angeles/California like most of the other novelas with scenes in the US are set. Hopefully when Elena & the kids return they will act more mature. I also hope Elena matures during her time away as well.

I don't think any of those novela scenes (from any show) set in the US are actually filmed in the US. They just have some stock footage of an American flag or some sign saying "Hollywood" or "Los Angeles" to show the scene is now in the US. If they have Leo/Oli/Alejandra/Sofia/Ricardo scenes in the US, they'll just have a stock footage of the NYC skyline with "Nuevo York" at the bottom of the screen to show the scene is now in the US.

Didn't this producer also produce Pasion Y Poder? I think some of the PyP characters went to New York to shop or something (Nina?) and they just flashed up "Nuevo York" to show they were now in New York.

I still wonder if they are going to do a time jump when Season 2 starts and if they do, will that mean Jaime's been in captivity for that period of time? Will the show begin with Jaime's funeral? or will Carlos engineer some rescue of Jaime that will indebt Alejandra to him (yet expose her to more danger)?

If Jacinto & them are targeting Vega Y Associates & their family & friends, this might put a stop to Alonso & Lourdes' relationship.

I agree wholeheartedly with JudyB about our wonderful recappers Urban, Jardinera, Anita and Blue Lass. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, you are the best! I personally kept watching this mess only for the recaps and comments and enjoyed them much more than the episodes themselves.Thank you guys for all the fun, laughter, moments of reflection and interesting discussions. I very much appreciated it and am going to miss this lovely and lively patio so much!

I don't know if I will watch second season of PASL. Maybe I will give it another chance, if nothing else is on. They will have to do a lot better than first season as far as the law is concerned, though. For me, the ridiculous legal system that PASL writers came up with really was the worst aspect of this telenovela.

Writers, I am not asking you to get a doctorate in Mexican law, but please get the basics right. You can start by learning the difference between a defense attorney and a prosecutor, for example.

Also, for future cases, please let me explain to you how punishment works. Remember Ramiro? He got his sentence cut from 12 years to 7 years because he also committed a crime of money laundering! Now, don't you see the problem with a criminal getting a lesser punishment because he committed an additional crime?! It should have been the opposite- Ramiro getting punished for laundering money, in addition to the punishment for defrauding the condominium folks. It's simple, really. If you commit one crime- you will get a punishment (check out the Codigo Penal Federal if you want to know what that punishment is). If you commit another crime, you get a punishment for the first crime and a punishment for the second crime. Sometimes the sentences are concurrent (it means that a term of imprisonment is equal to the length of the longest sentence), but you never ever get a shorter sentence for the first crime because you committed another crime.

And please stop with the absurdity of portraying judges taking criminals' words for granted every single time. Whenever a criminal says another person did something or said something, a judge has the obligation to listen to that other person and ask for corroborating evidence before making a decision. Newsflash- the criminals are criminals, they will say the moon is square if it gets them off the hook.

In any case, please know that people are focusing on the absurdity of PASL law because it is absurd, but also because they have nothing else to focus on. So if you don't feel like reading the Codigo Penal and you used all the money on Oli and Leo's wedding cake and all those elegant coffins in the finale and now you can't hire a consultant- I have a failproof solution for your problems: follow every legal scene with a scene containing a shirtless Fernando Colunga and voila, problem solved, and now you can have your defense attorneys prosecute extraterrestrials from Area 51 and no one will care.
No need to thank me, I was happy to help.

Irene

Considering the current situation I don't think it's likely that there will be a time jump unless they pretend to kill Jaime and keep him captive for a long time.

I can do without Elena and her immature children. Let them stay in Canada for a while.

K2R will annoy me.

As soon as this storyline ends, I want Juan to set his mother up in a catering business so she will get out of his business.

Irene, thank you for your comments. You express them in a most enlightening way that points out the absurdity of this telenovela. I loved this section:

"So if you don't feel like reading the Codigo Penal and you used all the money on Oli and Leo's wedding cake and all those elegant coffins in the finale and now you can't hire a consultant- I have a failproof solution for your problems: follow every legal scene with a scene containing a shirtless Fernando Colunga and voila, problem solved, and now you can have your defense attorneys prosecute extraterrestrials from Area 51 and no one will care."

I only watched sections of PASL so did not comment much. Now I'm caught up in the DISH/Univision soap. Its worthwhile being part of this patio for your comments.

Also thanks to the hardworking recappers.

Thanks Urban for the great finale recap and all the others. You write like a professionaö writer.

I so sgree with you about Elenas immature children. The‘re great actors, but so tired of seeing Ric and Elena play monster and read fairy tales. Por favor already.

I so agree with you about K2R. She is good villan but something about her used to get on my last nerve. There are some actors that I just can‘t watch. She is one of them. Arianda from la Malquerida is the other.

Even though it had tragic ending, still, for it being the Gran Finale it ended pretty flat. For me, at least.

I would have thought it would end with this huge cliff hanger. You know, fill us with hungry anticipation so we can‘t wait to tune in for part 2.

I hope we do get some Colunga, Adame, Rulli, Soto and Boyer would be very nice.

Thanks again to all the recappers and commentors. Its always fun.

I would love to see Rulli and Boyer but since she's the ex-girlfriend of the producer and Rulli is the new man, I doubt it. I would LOVE to see Teresa & Arturo show up at Bufete Vega.

I would also LOVE to see Eladio Gomez Luna book an appointment with one of the lawyers as well.

anon207,
I am googling Eladio Gomez Luna, can‘t place him. I am sure I will remember him and I had forgtten about Castro and the triangle.

Thx

I am laughing at myself. Eladio G Luna is FC.
How about Pedro Medrano? He was the bad boy in3 veces. One thing I love about about the series is all the cameos. Susana Gonzales would be nice to see too.

Pedro Moreno was in "Me Declaro Culpable" recently.

Susana Gonzalez is filming for "Mi Marido Tiene Mas Familia"

Thank you for that info!

Hey y'all there's this new novela on
At 3:00 called El vuelo,de,la,victoria
I wrote it like that cuz auto correct
Won't let me write it out the way it's supposed be. Anyways these are the actresses and actors in it:
Paulinas Goto
Andres palacio
Mane de La para

The others are:
Jorge Aravena
Elizabeth Alvarez
Rene Strickler
Susana Dosa Mantes
Jorge Posa
There is to many to mention.
It's one of those rags to riches love
Stories. Have yall heard of this one? It's Rather new. Televisa scooped it up last year.
By Carlos Romera.
I hope somebody will want to recap it,
But if not I'll check it out anyway.
I don't speak a word of Spanish but if
I watch long enough I can pretty much
Figure out the goings on.
If y'all get a chance check it out.

"Paulina Goto" auto wants to put an s at the end of her name.

Many thanks to Jardinera and Urban for their capable handling of what turned out to be a very eventful final. I enjoyed working with them and Anita as the recapping equipo for this TN -- it definitely wasn't my favorite show (and may in fact have been my least favorite), but life on the patio is always good.

At this point I think I'd prefer to avoid anything that *might* have a second season. It really bends the plot all out of whack, and I'm just not satisfied without my weddings and karmageddon at the end. Although I have to laugh when I remember how many of us said we couldn't get excited about Ric & Ale but would learn to live with them because we knew they were end game...and they turned out not to be end game after all.

I wonder if they will pull the old American soap trick and take the kids offstage for a few episodes and then bring them back as nubile teens with more plot possibilities? Wait: I JUST REMEMBERED I DON'T CARE.

If anyone doesn't know what to do with all their free time now, feel free to pedal on over to the bike-up bar that is CQM. We're having a few specials this week:

The Suffering Sculptor: Old Grandad and prune juice with a dash of bitters

The Artsy Octopus: Kraken rum and sour mix with a grenadine kiss

The Cachetada: A little bit of everything, thrown right in your face

We do start pretty early in the day, but the servings are small. ;}

Also as Nina said El vuelo de la Victoria started today at 3pm on Univision.

Thanks Nina and Anon, I will be tuned in tomorrow. If the good Lord wills.

Former Caray recapper Mauricio is covering Vuelo.

TF
Watching Isabel's body pond up and down when the bullets hit her was so terrible to watch thank goodness they didn't show Luis getting hit.

And I watched PASL on the UniNow app, even though PASL was aired about 15 episodes ahead of the States.
I watched almost all of LADO on Telemundo's site
They both get uploaded to their apps around 1 - 2 am.

Hey, all!

The second season of La Piloto is starting on Sunday on Univision. If you're interested I've got a character list and synopsis up here: https://5ftlatina.com/cohete/2018/07/25/la-piloto-2-characters-and-synopsis/
