FALSA IDENTIDAD – Capítulo ? – Parte 1 de 2

As we saw on Friday, Circe manages to grab Eliseo’s gun. The reason she was in the warehouse is because she followed Eliseo hoping to find Diego. They grapple for the gun and Eliseo is shot in the stomach.

I’m surprised to see that Porfirio Corona has computer skills. On Friday he took a picture with his cell of the rental car Diego was driving, with Isa and Amanda as passengers. He finds that the car was rented in D.F.

Mateo Corona calls Zoraida threatening Isabel. He tells Zoraida that the cops are after her. [This was dumb on his part; Isa is standing there with Zoraida and now knows people are searching for her.]

Circe begs Eliseo not to die. She’s not a killer [I notice it’s always about her.]

Fernanda sees some birds fly into the sky and has a bad feeling.

Diego returns to the hotel on the outskirts of Álamos. He also has a bad feeling. [Family members in telenovelas always experience this intuition when their loved ones are in danger.] Diego says that Eliseo didn’t meet where they were supposed to meet, and he isn’t picking up his cell. Isa comforts him.

Nutcase Circe tells Eliseo that he’s the key to get her close to Diego.

Gavino is on his way to D.F., and leaves Piochas in charge because José is a mess due to the non-wedding.

Ramona tells the poor girls at the Prostitution Annex of Babel that Gavino is on his way, and they’d better make him happy.

Salas has tracked Eliseo’s phone to some bodega, and they find blood there.

Porfirio tells Mateo that he’s capable of going to D.F. and dragging Chabela back by her hair (a greñas).

Circe calls her father and tells him she was the one who arranged the attempt on Eliseo’s life. She tells him to meet her in an hour where his wife and Diego got it on.

We get a small PSA from the jealous dancer, whose name I can’t recall. She’s telling another woman that she’s fat and that bulimia and anorexia are not good.

Jim tells Marlene that Gavino is coming to Babel. Marlene looks nervous.

One pleasant note. Chucho gathers up his savings to go meet Diana. The roommates tease him.

Fernanda slaps Salas for having let Eliseo go without guards.
 

FALSA IDENTIDAD – Capítulo ? – Parte 2 de 2

Diego comes to ask about his brother and has a really nasty fight with his mother. She jumps right in, blaming him for Eliseo having left without guards.

Gavino calls José and tells him Circe said she arranged the failed hit on Gavino. José: ”¿Eso le dijo?” He’s treading carefully and obviously relieved that Circe didn’t implicate him. Gavino is furious, saying he’s going to solucionar things, and to dig a hole because there’s going to be a burial today.

José decides to take some guys with him. He tells them he plans to save Gavino from the worst error of his life. Piochas gets huffy, saying he’s in charge and gets a couple of good punches from José. [Enjoyed this a lot; Piochas is a total dirtbag.]

Back to the argument between Fernanda and Diego. She tells him he was badly behaved and always thought of himself as being secondary to his brother. She says she had to care for Eliseo because he was sick a lot. And his father was very close to Diego. Diego: “And who told you I didn’t need the love of a mother? Didn’t you ever think I misbehaved to get your attention?” She starts to say he left, and he says she threw him out. Diego ends up saying this discussion is meaningless; better for each to go their own way.

Just after this Diego talks with Isa over the phone; and, with a husky voice, thanks her for worrying about him. [In contrast to his awful mother.]

Gavino has arrived at the bodega as Circe directed him. But she’s not there. He and she snarl at each other over the phone. She tells him she left him a gift. It’s the body of Eliseo tied to a chair. Circe tells her father this is so he can see she’s not exactly weak. If only he’d given her an opportunity…

[So, the two warehouses confused me. Eventually I figured out that Circe followed Eliseo to some random warehouse because Eliseo was trying to evade the car or cars he saw following him. He went in there instead of to the open space where Diego was waiting, to protect Diego. She shot him there, then dragged him into her trunk. She took him to the warehouse where Diego had been having sex with Silvia, tied him to a chair, and then told Gavino to meet her there.]

Just then the feds arrive in force and a gunfight breaks out. All of Gavino’s guys are killed.

Circe tells Gavino that Eliseo declared war on him and had his drugs confiscated at the border. And that he, Gavino, kidnapped him and killed him. She tells him that, at last, she’ll be free of him. Gavino vows to kill her.

Circe tells Felipa that no one can ever know she killed Eliseo. Diego wouldn’t ever forgive her. She also tells Felipa that Gavino has lots of enemies and that someone will probably kill him within a month. [Circe apparently doesn't know that Sergio Goyri is too big a star to get killed off so quickly.]

Gavino gives up.

Salas finds Eliseo’s body and, tears in his eyes, tells him how sorry he is that he failed him.

José had gone to the bodega and sees the firefight. He comes back to the ranch to tell the remaining guys what happened. He makes up a tale about someone having given the feds a tipoff that Gavino had kidnapped the Presidente Municipal. José appears to be covering his tracks and getting ready to take over.

Loved your comment about Circe not realizing that Sergio Goyri is too big a star to get killed off so soon.

So apparently there are two actors playing roles I've rooted for in the past, but here they're playing bad guys. I loved Uriel del Toro as Andrés in Al otro lado del muro, but here he plays the rather nasty Joselito. Even so, I often find myself rooting for him, but I suspect that's in part a carryover from his being Andrés (and his being quite goodlooking). And then there's Sonya Smith. I very much enjoyed her character in Marido en Alquilar, and I kept expecting that her role in Falsa would become more interesting, especially after she realized what a mistake she had made with Augusto. In fact, I thought I remembered her saying that she'd probably been wrong about Diego. But tonight, she's really nasty to Diego, as if she'd never considered the possibility that she might have been somewhat to blame. Feh.

I too noticed that Marlene became nervous when she learns that Gavino is coming to Babel. It would seem that she's somehow involved with someone in the Gaona cartel, and Deivid still seems the most likely person, but judging from the way she interacted with him a few days ago, I'm not so sure.

Where is Zoraida? I realize that Mateo doesn't have to know where she is in order to call her, but I'm confused about where she went when Fernanda fired her.

Is there any possibility that Eliseo may still be alive? I was surprised that Salas didn't even feel for a pulse when he came upon him tied to a chair. I rather doubt that he's alive, but I'm still surprised that no one, not even Salas, bothered to check.

I don't know why Eliseo didn't keep driving till he looped back around to meet his guys.

Fernanda slapping Salas and blaming Diego isn't helping much, does this open the door for Augusto?

Juanita, not sure on your question about Zoraida, when she got fired she called Marlene, who gave her a heads up about Isa being in town so she went to their motel room where Mateos called her and figured he was going to use her to lead them to Isabel so she thought it best that she go and lead them away.

so Isa and Amanda are alone, praying.

Diego must be drivng around in the rental car, only a matter of time before that's spotted.

don't know why Felipa isn't backing Circe (other that she is nuts) because Felipa is a dead woman if anyone spots her.

I don't expect Gavino to be in custody very long, but then there is the looming Colombians.

Ramona seemed happy Gavino was coming to town, nothing is too bad for the people around her.

and Chucho goes on his first date ever, could this be awkward?

I remember Marlene offering Zoraida help, and Zoraida telling her she didn't need it, but for some reason I didn't recall Marlene telling her about Isa's being in town and where she was. Of course, if I had a dollar for everything I fail to remember.... :-)

Dang, I was hoping Eliseo would live and he and Diego would work together to bring down Gavino. And now I don’t know what Salas will do, without his employer and friend.

Jim tells Marlene that Gavino is coming to Babel. Marlene looks nervous.

I’m still thinking Gavino is not Marlene’s novio, especially after all she’s said to that cutie Deivid about not living the narco life. Maybe Gavino is her ex and hooked her up on the legit side of Babel and she feels beholden to him?

Juanita, I also still find myself rooting for Joselito. He deserves a bad end, but there is charm and guile to him. I didn’t want him to continue being a doofus for Circe, so I’m glad his brain is kicking and he’s weighing the angles to play.

Felipe is a fool. Strange that her seer skills don’t tell her that Circe is nutso and will take her down with her.

Thanks for the recaps. I spent last week trying to catch up on old episodes and am just trying to remember names. What do we think of Salas? He seems like a good guy, but also in a position to be a traitor to Eliseo, et al. Real good guy or pretend good guy?

Circe may be an obsessive nutjob, but she's also pretty smart with trying to pin Eliseo's murder (?) on Gavino. Way to make lemons out of lemonade, Circe! Gavino should have given her a chance.

She may actually be too smart for Diego. He finds out that people know they're in Alamos and he just has this one last thing to do before fleeing? The smart thing would have been to call his brother- they both have telephones- while booking it back to DF.

I think only two version have sense: Gavino or Augusto is the novio of Marlene. I doubt he would be a new character.

Thanks, guys for the kind remarks. Anonymous at 3:23PM, I had never thought of Augusto as Marlene's sugar daddy. Could be. But I wasn't aware that, from what we saw of him, he did much besides hang around Eliseo's office in Álamos and help out Gavino.

What Marlene told Isa back when Isa came to see her the first time was that the guy paid the rent, but she needed to work at Babel to afford the luxuries she likes to have. I started off not liking Marlene much, but she's grown on me. She didn't hesitate to offer to bring Zoraida to DF when she found out she'd lost her job.

I'm pretty sure Marlene's novio is not Deivid. He has a thing for her, and told Piochas a while back that she was the one he thought the ... whatever (prettiest, hottest?) Deivid saved her from the creepy guy who came into her dressing room without permission. But they've had several conversations now, alone together. Marlene would have no reason to pretend they were NOT an item when they were alone together. And she called him un narquillo at one point, before he saved her.

The guy who could pay for that apartment in the City of Mexico needs to have fairly big bucks. Is it possible it's Gavino and she somehow doesn't know who he is? She's expressed a lot of distaste for narcos. Even though he's a walking, talking stereotype of the head of a cartel (cowboy hat, fancy boots, fancy belt, etc.) he could dress in a suit when he comes to the capital. And, Niecie, Gavino is probably not an ex for Marlene. Exes don't pay for apartments.

My God, Ramona is SO horrible. Azela Robinson has made me wish someone would shoot her in the face! I didn't have the energy to write all that she said to the "girls" but there was some play on words that was sheer nastiness.

Falsa Identidad - Capítulo 16 - Parte 1 de 3

Fernanda asks Salas, "Where's my son?" Hesitating, he replies, "At the coroner's."

The scene shifts to Marlene's. She tells her sister that her (Marlene's) novio is going to come to Mexico City and stay in their apartment. "That's good, isn't it?" asks Diana. It's clear that something is troubling Marlene. Diana asks her to confide in her. "You've been with him for years and no one has met him. Is he married?" Marlene doesn't reply. Diana asks again. Marlene gives a look that more or less says yes, he is. "Will he leave his wife?" asks Diana. "I don't know," replies Marlene.

Diego gets a phone call from Deivid: "Gavino killed your brother."

Fernanda goes to the coroner's and sees the body. She remembers Eliseo's desire to help his country and rid it of all the criminals.

Mateo tells Porfirio that Eliseo has been killed, and that Gavino has been charged with the murder. "How can I get my daughter back?" asks Porfirio. Mateo's concern is even cruder and more callous: "How can we continue to get money...from a corpse?"

Felipa is worried about Circe going out on the street. And what is that gun Circe is carrying? Is that the gun you used to kill Eliseo? Get rid of it! implores Felipa. Circe replies that her prints are all over the gun, and so she can't get rid of it. Besides, she needs it for protection. She's going to the funeral. Felipa thinks Circe is out of her mind to do this [she got that right]. Circe tells her that Diego will be at the funeral, and he needs to know what she's been through. He needs to know about Joselito, and that she put Gavino in the carcel. "You know I killed his brother only for him," she tells Felipa. [Does she think Diego will be impressed with this sign of true love?] What if there's another woman? asks Felipa. Well, says the practical Circe, then the funeral can be for two instead of just one.

Diego is extremely upset after receiving Deivid's phone call. He doesn't want to eat. He breaks down and cries in Isa's arms. "They took my brother from me. It's my fault that they killed him. I couldn't even say goodbye."

Meanwhile, Chucho returns crestfallen from his cita. He tells his friend/roommate/??? that she stood him up (me dejó plantado) and didn't even answer the messages he sent her. [Are we supposed to know why Diana stood him up? If so, I missed it.]

Fernanda tells Salas that she wants the funeral to be at the house. She doesn't want the press or reporters from radio or TV. She also doesn't want any photos of Eliseo dead. She wants him to be remembered as he was. Salas asks whether she needs anything. Strength, she replies. Strength to keep from taking a gun and killing her son's assassin.

The scene shifts to the jail, where Gavino is being questioned. "Where is the gun you used?" He insists that he had nothing to do with Eliseo's death. "When I got there, I found him dead. It was a trap. I had nothing to do with it." The two policemen questioning him don't believe him. When he doesn't give them the answers they want, they put a cloth over his face and pour lots of water on it (a somewhat milder form of waterboarding). And they laugh. They also remind him that two of his men tried to assassinate Eliseo a few weeks/months earlier [that, too, was Circe's doing]. Another denial, more water, more laughter.

Gavino finally is able to make a phone call. He calls José and asks him to let his lawyer know that he's been arrested. He tells José that Circe set him up: she killed Eliseo and then told the federales where to find him. He orders José to kill her. Look for Diego at the funeral; where he is, Circe will be too. "Kill them both!" he orders.

Although José promises his loyalty to Gavino, Gavino worries that José may try to protect Circe. Sure enough, José calls Circe. Felipa apparently has Circe's cell phone and listens as José leaves a message saying that Gavino has ordered that she be killed, but he, José, wants to pardon and protect her. However, for that to happen, "you have to be with me."

Gavino is right about José's feelings, and he is right, too, in telling José that if he finds Diego, he'll also find Circe. Diego has come to see his dead brother, and sure enough, Circe appears. "You and your family killed my brother," he says. [Probably not the loving welcome she'd hoped for.] Circe tells him she had nothing to do with his brother's death. In fact, she says, I called the federales, but it did no good. "How did you know where he was?" Diego asks. She claims she overheard the plans between José and Gavino. Diego asks her to leave. No, she says. I left everything for you. I love you. Diego tells her, "everyone who has been close to me winds up badly. Even my brother." Circe insists that she can't be without him. She asks whether there's someone else. Diego more or less finesses the question. He says he'll get back to her after all this awful situation has passed. He promises that he'll call her. Satisfied, she kisses him and leaves.

Meanwhile, Isa tells Amanda that she has to go to the funeral, to be there for Diego. "What if you don't come back?" asks Amanda. Isa promises that she will. She then explains to Amanda that she has to go for Diego because he's the only way they can leave Alamos. She claims that all she wants is for the three of them (Isa, Amanda, and Ricas) to live happily in Mexico City. Isa then leaves for the funeral.

She arrives just as Circe is leaving. The two brush by each other. A guard stops Isa and tells her that only family and friends can enter. Isa turns and looks at Circe's back as she's walking away. She then calls Zoraida, who has come back to Fernanda's house to be with her at this difficult time. (And Fernanda thanks her.) Zoraida is upset that Isa has come. It's very dangerous for her. Isa tells her that Diego is inside the house. Zoraida tells her that Diego is a good person who makes very bad decisions, and that he's not for Isa.

We then see a distraught Diego at his brother's open coffin. Diego is crying uncontrollably. He tells Eliseo "You were always my example to follow. How can I live without you? It's my fault that you're here. Forgive me. I love you." [That's a very abridged account.] Fernanda hears and sees this entire scene. I thought to myself, if this doesn't make her feel differently toward Diego, nothing will. Well, even though she, too, was crying, she apparently hasn't changed her thinking about Diego. She tells him he should leave. She's afraid someone will see Diego. She's not afraid for what may happen to Diego, she's worried that someone will think that Eliseo was a liar and a criminal, that he broke the law to protect Diego. "Eliseo risked everything for you. Until he died. You should have stayed in Mexico City. Go!"
 

Falsa Identidad - Cap. 16 - 3 de 3

Mateo tells Porfirio that Diego will be at the funeral. "Perhaps you can grab him then."

Ramona tells Jim that Gavino has been arrested and won't be coming to Babel. They're both concerned about what that means financially. Ramona observes that without the money laundering and the drug sales, they couldn't survive. She says she's thinking of calling Piochas to see whether he can work something out. Or perhaps Gavino's daughter.

Felipa tells Circe about José's phone message, both that Gavino has ordered her death and that José wants to protect and forgive her. Circe cares only about Diego.

José tells the others in the cartel that he has spoken to Gavino and Gavino wants them to create a very hot time at the velorio (wake, funeral) and wants them to kill both Circe and Diego. Deivid then texts Diego: "the cartel is coming to the funeral--get out of there!" Diego tells Isa that the cartel is coming. End of episode.

Juanita--Excellent rendition of the episode. Thank you for all the details. I'm finally all caught up. I still miss most of the rapid-fire dialogs sprinkled with bleeps, but if no one else has claimed Friday for a recap, I can do it (probably not well) and post it on Saturday.

If this helps (even though it's a side story): "Are we supposed to know why Diana stood him up? If so, I missed it." Just as Diana and Ricas were about to leave to "walk the dog," Marlene arrived. She immediately thinks something is up because this is not a good neighborhood in which to walk a dog. She keeps them from going out and instead has the "confide in me" conversation with Diana.

yep, like Anita said, Diana and Chucho didn't really have a date, they were just going to meet, and of course Diana would be taking Ricas and Nico along, but then Marlene showed up.

Diego's reaction seemed a bit over the top for someone who is supposed to save the day, will he now stay in Alamos to get revenge and he is still driving the rental car and Mateo's guys are working security for the funeral.

I think Jose's instructions on the funeral were to kill everyone.

poor Amanda, being left alone, again.

Zoraida notices Isabel's concern for Diego, she has seen that look before, when 15 yo Isa was with Porfirio, when she tells her Diego is not the guy for her.

beat up Jim didn't know Gavino had a daughter, hmm, with him in jail he wants Ramona gone and maybe he'll get a new partner, nope, Ramona puts her gun on the desk.

Many thanks, Anita and deb. I clearly wasn't paying attention to the start of the scene involving Diana and Ricas (and Nico). Thanks for explaining why Chucho was stood up. Though couldn't Diana at least have responded to his messages? Oh well....I suspect we may not have seen the last of these two as a couple.

deb, thanks for the great additions. As for José's instructions, IIRC in the phone call to José, Gavino just said to kill both Circe and Diego. However, when José relayed Gavino's wishes to the rest of the guys, he first says Gavino wanted everyone blown to bits. However, he then says that Gavino told him that Circe killed Eliseo and sent the federales, and that Gavino wants Circe and Diego killed. Perhaps I should have spelled out what I've just said here, but it was late, and I decided to focus on Gavino's specifying Circe and Diego.

So true. As Amanda watched Isa's concern for Diego, surely she could see they're more than friends.

Fernanda is beyond the pale blaming Diego, especially after she had that snake Augusto as his stepdad.

So Circe managed to clean all the blood off her, destroy her bloody clothes, leave no blood stains in her car, etc. CSI could solve this murder in a day.

Well, Diego had me in tears. Luis Ernesto did a terrific job, sobbing beside his brother's coffin and apologizing for everything.

I could have slapped Circe into next week. She lies saying that she tried to get the feds there in time, when she was the one who set the whole thing up. Also, instead of giving the man some sympathy and a little space to mourn, she just keeps pushing herself into his body and telling him she loves him.

I wish Jim would grab Ramona's gun and hold it to her head, threatening her the way she constantly threatens him. I am sick and tired of her, and I doubt she's going away anytime soon.

What is the matter with Fernanda? She almost breaks down watching her younger son grieving and can't bring herself to comfort him?

I know it would have been a risk, considering how evil she is, but I would have liked to have seen Circe coming in and seeing Isabel and Diego together.

I've come to the conclusion that the young woman playing Amanda is just a crappy actress. Her go-to expression is a blank stare. And I don't like her emotional blackmail toward her mother. After years of abuse, Isabel is just supposed to not have a man in her life? And Isa keeps letting her get away with it - like saying the only reason she was going to see Diego at the funeral was to be sure of a ride back to D.F.

That was some extremely lame waterboarding by the Álamos cops. I don't think Goyri even had to blow his nose afterwards.

I wonder how many days we'll have to wait until we catch sight of Marlene's sugar daddy? I sort of think he will be a new character. Marlene is growing on me, and I just have a hard time seeing her with Gavino or Augusto. I think she'd notice what snakes they are.

I really expected José to disobey Gavino about showing up with guns blazing at the funeral. OTOH Mateo seems to be sending only 3 guys, plus himself. Not sure if state or federal cops are meant to be there as well.

More later--Joselito didn't even pretend to try to find Diego and Circe inside the house. They just started shooting up the innocent mourners coming to the house. How can Deivid stand to be in that gang?

Well, Circe certainly minced no words letting José know exactly how she feels about him.

If Augusto turns out to be Marlene's novio, I will be disappointed in her. I've come to like her and do believe she basically has good taste. If Gavino is the novio, I'll be more understanding. Gavino's a bit older than she and I can see a younger, more naïve Marlene being taken (then as she matured, being stuck) with him. But Door No. 3, a new character, would be great -- especially if he's hot.

So far, Amanda has not been nasty with Diego, just observing. So I'm hoping she doesn't do something stupid like talk to her dad on a cell phone where they can be tracked.

Then, Fernanda found out that Augusto withdrew all their money.
Then the theory of Augusto being Marlene's novio.
Since he now has enough money, could he be Marlene's boyfriend, who will hear about Babel needing a new partner, then invest that money in Babel?

Niecie, Mateo shot at the gang guys, but he was pretty careful to spend most of his time behind a big stone column, even though he was wearing vest!

Yes, I don't know if they're playing with us hinting that Augusto could be Marlene's novio or not. After all those years of supposedly being a good husband and father, at least to Eliseo (not Diego), he steals all the money from their accounts.

Salas is THE MAN! I don't remember how he knew that Eliseo had written that $26K check to Mateo, but it worked like a charm subduing Big Ed, not to mention that gun to the temple!

I'm beginning to lose hope they'll ever get back to D.F. Mateo ordered the highways blocked.

As I said before, Amanda is not one of my favorites. Yes, she's observant. But she clearly wants her mother not to have a relationship with anyone except Daddy Dearest. And, yes, even after being basically thrown across the room into the furniture, she still might call him.

When Marlene spoke with Diana, she seemed to really care about Mystery Man. I just find it hard to imagine her feeling that way about pudgy Augusto.

Felipa's calling José was an interesting twist. And I was surprised Diego was so naïve as to think Circe was going to tolerate riding to DF with Isabel.

Yes, Deivid is very conflicted about killing people. I hope José doesn't off him for not killing Felipa.

I was trying to picture Circe ditching her car, her money, her life, and crawling in the back seat with Amanda.

and Joselito's plan is... to bring Circe back to be part of the gang? talk about crazy in love, I'm surprised Felipa gets any readings out of those cards on these people, I would think they would just burst into flames.

Thanks, deb, for reminding me about Gavino's visit with his lawyer, Sebastián.

It always amuses me how visitors, whether family members or, in this case, an attorney, visit the incarcerated person right outside their cell and talk through the bars.

It's pretty gutsy of the writers to imply that the President of the Mexican Republic would have had a close relationship with a narco in Sonora. Or I should say that he apparently had one before Gavino was accused of murdering a candidate for Governor of the state.

Just like the novela about Escobar, the biggest fear appears to be extradition where there's no such thing as fancy prison suites with a chef and hookers like Escobar had in Colombia.

novelera, I too find it a bit odd that visitors to the jail almost always seem to be allowed to visit by standing right outside the bars. You'd think someone would worry about what they could slip to the prisoner. I wonder whether that "outside the bars" policy applies only in telenovelas or whether it's really the case in Latin America.

I don't have much to add to the great comments you all have already made. One thing that struck me was Isabel's response when Diego tells her to leave but he won't, since he has nothing to lose but she does. She throws his words back at him and says, "You have nothing to lose? Why aren't you thinking about me? I love you!"

It's interesting that both Circe and Joselito are madly, blindly, hopelessly in love--but not with each other. And both are in love with people who don't return their feelings. I really dislike Circe, though I confess that I enjoy her rebellion against the traditional role of women, starting with her father's not giving her credit for having any brains, strength, courage, or anything else he claims to value. And Joselito's treatment of her isn't much better than Gavino's. He tells her that if she comes with him, he'll do everything in his power to see that Gavino rots in jail, and she'll be treated like the queen that she is. But then, we see the other side of being treated like a queen. He tells her, You slept with me, you're my woman, you do as I say.

Circe and Joselito have great chemistry. They would be great in a Taming of the Shrew production, updated with each one taking a turn as the shrew and, of course, no shooting anyone.
