Amar a Muerte, 12/10/18, Episode 27: Q-Where oh Where is El Chino Valdes?

A-In two places at once. (Broma)

*Johny is on his way (presumably) to the office. He always seems to wear the same suit and tieless shirt (should be quite ripe by now, after 27 episodes). His fancy red car has been defiled by a nasty yellow note which reads, “How often do you think of me?” It freaks him out. What a way to start the day. To make matters worse, he can’t reach Lucia.

*Lucia and her chofer linger over their early morning kiss. It’s a lot like coffee, though. It wakes Luci up to realize what she’s been doing and sends LCJ away. She needs to be alone. Although he doesn’t believe her, he strides out, still breathless from the passion spent, or rather, unspent.

*At their breakfast nook, Mateo and Eva are pissed by the news in or not in the papers. Mateo’s article is missing and all Eva can see are the competing headlines featuring Luci. Eva is sure Luci’s not going to get away with it as she has no idea who she’s dealing with. And Mateo thinks Eva does? It sounds like she is defending those scalawags. No—Eva is only defending her family, the family business and Mateo.

*El Alacrán and Gancho discuss the latest news featuring Armenta over breakfast. El Al insists, between mouthfuls, their priority is to find El Chino and take him to Teresio, dead or alive.

*Fabián tells his P.I. he will have to speed up the search for El Chino since he has to return to the U.S. soon. He’s willing to double his fee. P.I. says it’s not a matter of money. It’s a matter of grey matter.

*Luci and LCJ are about to drive to the office when she gets “the” call. Armenta’s man will call back in an hour and Luci can choose where they are to meet. She can’t get a word in edgewise. Oh, he reminds her, no police.

*Jules finds her mother still in bed. She learns Lu lost her job when some lug got fresh and Panchito was there and socked him. Lu doesn’t know why he was there. (Take a guess, girl.) She hates the thought of having to look for another job. She wonders if Fabián will find El Chino. Jules thinks he probably will. One thing she is sure of is that El Chino is not too interested in finding them. Maybe, Lu tells her daughter, they ought to go back to San Antonio. Jules is so not with that.

*Karla, just waking up, considers calling Ernesto. Papá comes in and wants to know where she was last night and where did she get that dress. If she doesn’t tell the truth, he’s kicking her out. She considers his words. At the dry cleaning shop, her boss tells her he has some complaints. A call comes in for her and she excuses herself to take the call. It’s Ernesto asking her to go out. She accepts.

*Yep, Johny’s at the office, all hunched over with worry. He instructs one of the lovely assistants to call Fabricio and have him hire the best security force in the city. He aims to have security details attached in multiples to every Carvajal and beyond. As he sits at his desk, he rewinds his memory banks to the first note he got and just missed the person who handed it to a random waiter for delivery. He rereads the new note. He seems to be as puzzled as we are of its meaning.

*Renata has a hangover, but shows up at the office anyway. Kayla prepares an Alka-Seltzer for her. She doesn’t remember what happened the night before, only what Kayla told her she and Guille were doing. She worries what Guille will think of her present (and past) state. Turns out Guille is also hung over and can’t remember a thing. He gets a flashback, but it only covers his arrival and then how he cut his hand. He gets up and looks out at Renata and then back to his hand, but can’t connect the dots.

*Vale is annoyed by the two security guards who are now attached to her. She runs into Sergio, who wants Jules’ phone number. They decide to go look for her, the detail following close behind in their very obvious black SUV. Jules is on a corner selling her lottery tickets. Not far away, Fabby’s P.I. is sitting in a car surveilling with an iPhone camera pointed at Jules. Vale stops Sergio and they decide to ask Lucho and all go out to eat. They buy up Jules’ tickets and Jules asks permission from her mother. Off they go. Lu then spies the P.I. and he clicks some photos for his gallery and takes off, leaving Lu screaming at him from the middle of the street.

*Beltrán gets a serious talking to by one of his colleagues at the university. There have been complaints about him, from his students, no less. He dismisses his poor performance by explaining that the classes are for participation. And besides, the subject is boring and he’s trying to liven things up. He hurries to get away.

*Luci is getting her agenda for the day read to her, but she’s not really paying attention. The call comes in. Luci has picked the public library for the meeting with Armenta. The voice on the other end warns her, no press, no police. She doesn’t get to lay down any of her own conditions.

*Johny learns he just missed Lucy. Her secretary tells him how nervous she seemed and asked for her chofer to stand by. Johny hears the dreaded name—Jacobo. He calls poor overworked Montilla to tell him he thinks Luci went off to meet with Armenta. Montilla calls for his troops and they troop over to the Carvajal offices to set up a Command Center.

*Luci and LCJ arrive at the library and walk in together in lock step, each wearing the identical shade of grey. A matched pair. LCJ thinks it’s lunacy to come to see the very person they escaped from who wanted to kill them both. They stand and look at each other. Luci thanks him for coming with her. As they enter the reading room, they see a nice old granddaddy reading a story to two little kids. He smiles and shoos the kids out, then he has LCJ removed, to Luci’s objections. He reminds her she wanted to talk to him alone. LCJ gets manhandled outside. She watches as he disables her phone.  Armenta and Luci sort of get to know each other. Armenta says, “May I remind you of the stupidity of escaping from my men?” Luci comes right back with, “First compliment me on my intelligence, then reproach me for my stupidity.” He doesn’t like the way she talks to him, but recognizes she is different. Outside in the hall, LCJ is still being manhandled by the three henchmen.

*Johny meets Montilla and half the city police force outside the building. Montilla is a little put out with Johny because he doesn’t really know if Luci has gone to see Armenta. Montilla wants to know why Johny thinks Luci went to meet Armenta. Johny claims it’s logical and that the chofer is certainly working for Armenta. Montilla tells him to stop thinking along those lines—for now. Johny apologizes. Montilla thinks Luci can be located using the GPS on their phones. Mateo and Eva meet them in the lobby. She can’t believe Luci truly went off to meet Armenta.

*Beltino is being his usual objectionable self, arguing with Alicia. He’s announced he has to take a trip and tomorrow all the better. Finally he tells her that Javier has read his diagnosis and knows he’s going to die. Beltino had promised Javier he would save him and that’s why he has to travel tomorrow (but doesn’t tell Alicia that it’s about the money, although he told Javier).

*Odd-Long-Red-Haired-and-Bearded Poker Guru is visited by some guy who is looking for Karla (must have missed this—probably over more “cheating”). He’s brought an iPhoto. OLRHBPG assures him she can be found AND taught a lesson. One of his peeps easily finds out the street where Karla works. In the store, Karla is confronted by her boss. He found a dress in her bag. She declares that in all the years she’s worked there, nothing has gone missing. Oh, and she’s leaving now for her doctor’s appointment. Mr. Peeps takes a couple of photos of her from a distance.

*Poor Beltino. He’s at Barbara’s to tell her about the plans for leaving on their trip the next day. He tells her to go get two bus tickets. She thinks he’s kidding. She’s certainly not going to leave her business to go off bouncing on a bus for hours. She pressures him to get airline tickets. What’s a few dollars more when they are going to recover a million of them. Then it dawns on her. Beltie has never been on a plane before and has a fear of flying. She begins laughing at him. That gets his dander up and he grabs her and tells her not to make fun of him.

*At Command Central, they learn the phones have had their locators disabled. Mateo shares that the car has a GPS. Montilla says all the devices were disabled. Then, someone gets a bead on their location and off go all the keystone cops.

*Back to Luci and Armenta. They talk “shop.” She finally gets to the point—why was she kidnapped and why did he want her killed. He denies it, though he says that when he does decide, he will kill her personally. Outside the reading room, LCJ warns the Armenta gang members that the meeting has gone on too long. The señora is a very important person and the police may show up any time and it will be a disaster for everyone. The sidekicks don’t care and he gets manhandled again. LCJ warns them there is still time. Inside, Armenta concedes that Luci has the power of the 4th Estate. The reporters write untrue and inflammatory articles. Luci says the reporters inform. Armenta interrupts—sometimes they let themselves get carried away. The media can be more dangerous than a weapon. Someone with that much power at her command can ruin a person without killing. Luci challenges him—why not use that power, he and she, together.

Anita: Somebody better get Perry Mason, Paul Drake & Della Street on the case.

Love the title, the musings about Johny's eternal outfits and this paragraph:

*Lucia and her chofer linger over their early morning kiss. It’s a lot like coffee, though. It wakes Luci up to realize what she’s been doing and sends LCJ away. She needs to be alone. Although he doesn’t believe her, he strides out, still breathless from the passion spent, or rather, unspent.

At this point everybody seems heading for disaster: Beltrán, Jacobo, Lucia and Karla. The gambling goons have located the latter and are ready to make her pay for stealing back her money. Armenta seems to want to make Lucia his new mistress, Beltrán is about to lose his job and his life and hey, what else could go wrong?

I did enjoy the comedy when Barbara guessed that macho Beltrán is scared of flying and also the image of Armenta happily reading a story to the random niños.

Thanks for the recap Anita. This story keeps pulling us along and I'm enjoying the ride.

Thank you, Anita!

I love your way of writing Johnny, it makes him look more ridiculous than menacing, which is great because he's just the worst.

A nice little scene that wasn't mentioned was Lucia and Jacobo at the car, with Lucia noticing that Jacobo still has her lipstick on his lips. He playfully asks her to clean him up, since he doesn't have a handkerchief (or something similar); she's all "how dare you" but her eyes are brighter than the morning light. She eventually wipes his lips in a gesture that is both intimate and sexy. That water affair must have been something else!!

I guess it's safe to say that so far Jacobo has zero El Chino in him. Death row Chino wouldn't have even blinked an eye before pulverizing Armenta and all his goons.

Anita, what a trooper you are to have stayed up so late to provide us with this exceptional recap! Thank you so much!

JudyB, I thought that paragraph you quoted was quite noteworthy too! And I too laughed at the scene where Barbara was making fun of Beltino about his fear of flying...though he was not at all amused.

Johny sure was flustered with that note. Who could it be...let me count his enemies?! It would be quite eerie if it were Death Chick. OR it just might be Leon/Chino/Jacobo (LCJ) taunting him and making him shake in his boots...or whatever footwear he wears.

During the previous episode, Johny referred to whoever he was talking to on the phone (right before Death Chick showed up) as "La niña" or a name very similar to that. Well, last night when he asked Lucia's secretary about Lucia's whereabouts, he referred to her by the same name! So she must be the one who set up his meeting with Death Chick or whoever he thought he was supposed to be meeting that night!! Tum-dee-tum-tum!!

The Lucia-Armenta meeting was quite tense, but Lucia did a fine job of keeping her cool; she didn't even flinch when he put his hand on her knee...dirty old man! Brave woman...now she is suggesting they work together??

I always enjoy Renata's and Kayla's conversations too...such girlie girls. And Renata certainly changed her style of dressing to work...much more provocative.

"OLRHBPG" was the guy Karla stole the money from; so he is the one looking for her. Interesting how his henchies were able to view ALL the cameras in the area and track her all the way to the market when they lost her trail. Beanie time??

Have a good day, Patio!!

Thanks for reminding me about that scene Anita. Ah yes, wonderfully romantic and indeed her eyes were shining and she was really amused at his daring. We have a serious love affair going for sure.

Adriana, Yes!! that scene was so sweeet! And No, the EL Chino muscle sure hasn't come out in LCJ...I was hopeoing to see some of that last night. The last time that happened was when he beat up the reporter that was bad-mouthing his precious Lucia.

RGV, I moticed Lucia's calm with Armenta, too. When the creep touched her I flinched but she barely seemed to acknowledge it - knowing what we know about Lucia's past, sadly I think Armenta was one of the better looking guys who ever touched her without permission.

Judy, I love that the blooming love between our protas is starting to show more. We've had so many Beltino shenanigans - his wife, his son, his almost underage almost mistress, the shaman, Barbara etc etc... he seems to be involved in several stories at the time, while Jacobo just goes through the motions of being Lucia's driver and blinking nervously every once in a while.

Even Renata and Guill have more screen time together.

Good morning, early birds...I've just had my coffee, but with no Jacobo to get kissed by.

In my defense, it was getting a bit late, so there were several scenes I had to minimize or eliminate. I figured everyone had seen the lipstick scene and savored that intimate little touch as much as I did. Thank you, Adriana for putting into print.

Adriana, what is so compelling about the Jacobo-Lucia storyline is that LCJ himself doesn't know what is happening. Is he truly falling in love all over again and ecstatic about what this younger body can do, or is he still bent on vengeance. He DOES want to know who killed him and why, though what he can do about it is left to be seen.

I also liked the scene in the prior episode where Silvina is warning him to stay away from Lucia--for both their sakes, and he immediately goes in, moves in toward her and ends up in a mutual embrace and a kiss that surely raised his blood pressure a couple of notches. Did you notice that although he continued to use the formal Ud., but Luci never reacted when he said, as they were face to face, "Lucia, por favor," about not meeting with Armenta. <<Rewind.

Sadly, I don't care a whit about Karla and her gambling problems (actually she's another in Karla's body) Do we know Ernesto's "dead" wife's name? If so, please let me know. I didn't see it on Rgv Chick's very comprehensive list. Surely she will somehow knit the LCJ and Beltino story together through Camilo. I'll give her a pass, but less space.

Hey Steve, you must be watching Perry Mason reruns, too. I fell into a channel that is broadcasting them. It's Law and Order slowed down to 33 1/3 rpm. Nobody wears ripped jeans and no tattoos. What a relief, even though Perry never takes off his suit.

Thanks Anita. A fun read which filled in some blanks.

I think my favorite scene was the lipstick cleanup too. Just cute, and very realistic.
And I am thoroughl;y enjoying the Renata and Kayla scenes too, though maybe in a more woofy kind of way. But those two are 100 percent girlie girls through and through. Again, very realistic and un-TNish.

And another mystery: How do these Cartel jacckasses eat constantly, do zero work or exercise, and weigh 150 pounds? Everytime we see Alacran he is eating a whole rabbit or otherwise stuffing his face. Well, I stand corrected, thinking about it, almost every time, Shoot, I think I just answered my own question about the exercise...nevermind.

Is Guille beginning to feel something for Renata? When he was surreptitiously gazing at her through his office window was that happening, or was he just admiring the view afforded by her new dress. I expected to see a tag peeping out somewhere on that dress. I'd bet she bought it on the way to work and changed in the ladies room.

Kayla never disappoints.

Anita: "Karla – received the soul of Jeraldi Jimenez who set herself on fire after she stole..............." from Library of Congress the cast list. :-)

Whew, Kirby, ...Jeraldi...now I can sleep at night. I knew about the suicide by fire. What a horrible way to die.

Kirby--Where did the birds go? Did they join the flock swirling over LCJ and Luci's tryst site? Santa Muerte is definitely no bird. I like your feathered subjects.

Thanks. It has been too cold to go out chasing them down lately. At least for me...I'm sure they are doing fine.
How 'bout a shot of Daddy getting yelled at for being gone too long? Like: "Where have you been?"

" I knew about the suicide by fire. What a horrible way to die." Pfffftt. HER choice.

Great shot. Well, we know he wasn't out drinking with his buddies or cheating on his partner. But he's coming back empty handed. Forgot to stop at Publix on the way home?

Anita, don't you worry about missing tiny scenes, recapping is hard work and you got everything that matters.
Had you missed something major, I still wouldn't have cared because your profile photo is an excuse for everything! Yeah, Amor Bravio is still my number one telenovela crush.

The increasing closeness between out two protas is great to watch. Being kidnapped together changed something for them. Lucia is so over the social status differences and Jacobo just seems so smitten against his better judgment. I think he's only now getting to know the real her. Leon was enchanted by her young body and prettiness, but as Jacobo, he really sees her strength and vulnerability.

Adriana, and what is making it almost irresistible for Jacobo is seeing Lucia falling for what he IS rather than what he HAS. It is hard to fight that.

Good point Kirby...and you're right. How can Jacobo fight that? They're both goners. And if Silvina is right, it's not going to lead to a happy ending, alas.

Yes, Kirby, exactly! He's a stud-muffin, for sure, but when the time comes I'm sure Lucia will be ready to give it all up.
Oh, happy endings... I'm not keeping my hopes up for that, too many moths flying around for that to be possible..

Adriana, "stud-muffin" ...and then some!! LOL

And yes, too many of those black moths flying around (sigh)

Dear Abby:
There is this girl I was in love with, then her boyfriend killed me.
I am alive again now and I think I am falling for her again against the advice of the coffee grounds.
I am afraid I am making a mistake, because there are always all these moths flying around. What does that mean?

Choking Chofer

Dear Choking.
Just go with your heart. Unless she is really hot between the sheets, then just go with that , hell with the heart stuff. The moths just mean you are not the first. Ignore them

Too funny, Kirby! But Choking Chofer still has his vengeance scheme waaaay back in his mind. Maybe by the time he finds out the whole truth and nothing but the truth, he will have forgotten/forgiven the girl's betrayal.

Lucho's snobby little friend came down to earth with a thud, didn't he? He was all, "Come on, give me your friend's number! What? Oh, yaasss! Let's go find her right this minute!" Then as soon as he found out she is poor and sells lottery tickets on the street, he makes a snotty face and is all, "Umm ... err ... I just remembered ... umm ... yeah ... I gotta go, got something to do!" Jerk!

Anon at 4:28--Actually, they are all going to have lunch together. But you are right,I think his ardor has diminished a bit, especially after seeing the hug the two girls had in greeting each other.

Great first paragraph and it just gets better from there! You're seeing so much of the quircky this go 'round. I haven't perhaps looked closely enough, huh.

Anon 4:28, thanks for bringing that up. I was so disappointed with Sergio. I was liking him so much better than Lucho, but if he turns out to be a “clasista” then he is in the same ranking as Lucho...quite low.
