Amar a Muerte, 1/11/19, Episode 48: Everybody Gets Schooled Or Tooled

  • Lucia is told by Armenta that tonight she's sleepng in his bed with him and no if's, and's or but's; she tells him at first that she's very disappointed in his manner.  A learned and worldly man such as he should realize that ain't the way to seduce the light of León Carvajal's life.  "-Are you challenging me?"  "--Take it any way you like.  But I warn you that if you force me you will be spending the night with an object who feels nothing; and you'll feel nothing either!"  He says then yeah, he'll change but then they'll have to see each other more frequently.  He storms out of the room at that point.

  • And, speaking of strategies and possible objects of seduction, Johny takes Susana to a swank restaurant after the interview.  He tries impressing her with his knowledge of wines and she asks him point blank if seduction is his intent.  He backs off and demurs that of course that was the furthest thing from his mind.  "--Oh, and by the way, are you dating anyone of late?"  He stumbles around with something about his being known as a lone wolf.  He laughs nervously.  He's only looking after León Carvajal's interests --QEPD--and to smooth out their work-related differences of late.  She tells him to talk to the hand cuz this press babe ain't anywhere near about to listen.  Yup he can save it for the ditzy, birdbrained multitude, but not her.  She asks a final question after apologizing for the earlier nosy-pants puzzler.  "--Who do you think will end up controlling the Carvajal empire?" It isn't a secret there's a war going on between the two factions.  He applauds her intuition and strength.  He offers a toast to her principles and strength of character.  She walks away.  Either time to powder her nose or time to take a taxi home cuz she's done with the B.S. from J.C.--and it ain't jesu cristo, though ol' Johny would take credit for that also if he could.....
  • Back at Armenta's he tells her he wants to take her to Egypt and set her in front of the Pyramid at Gizah--if nothing else but to show her she's more beautiful that this one of the seven wonders of the world or some such claptrap.  She asks what he'll do when the police finally trap and catch him.  He tells her to everything there is a solution, except for Death.  She takes from that that he thinks he can corrupt the police without exception.  He says he doesn't believe it, he knows it.  They'll be the ones taking him to Egypt, in fact!  "--I don't talk business.  Do you have another question?"  She asks if he's interested in Grupo Carvajal.
  • Meanwhile, Santos arrives at Camilo's and Jacón introduces them.
  • Armenta believes Lucia's question to be an odd one.  She doesn't see why, given his interest/obsession with her.  Why else is he investigating her hidden past?  She's the weak point, isn't that right?  He admits then that he's never envied Leon Caravajal anything except for his wife.
  • At Camilo's once more, Santos explains that Death instructs when any one of the transmigrants does something it feels isn't morally correct.  The wound begins to hurt and then to weep and ooze blood.  Cam and Jake are interested in this opinion.  Is it Death or Life that offers a second chance.  Santos says he's learned the hard way and it is Death without a doubt.  Cam wonders why he's in this body here and now for?
  • Alicia finds it hard to believe her professor hubby hays resorted to go to a witch for solutions.  He apologizes for his errant ways to this point and then kisses her and promises a bit of nookie when they get home.  He watches over Javier.
  • El Alacran orders Mugre to go to Lupita's burial and see if Chino might just appear.  He then wants to put that old dog to bed once and for all.
  • Juliana asks the nurse aid to stay with her mother a few minutes while she gets a change of clothes and does a couple of chores,
  • When Val arrives home later that evening, Eva is there.  The two sisters discuss what they remember most about their dad.  Guillermo calls to check in with Val and he tells her he's fine and at their mom's old house.  Yup, things are nice enough there that he's probably going to stay there....
  • At the studio, Mayela complains to Lucas about his constant insinuations and asides during the entire interview.  He gripes about her unrequited feelings towards Guille.  She's pissed and walks off.
  • Juls arrives at Perlita's restaurant and asks for whatever loose cash she has to help pay for her mother's hospital expenses.  Perlita hasn't much but will give her what she has.
  • Beltran goes to Lupita's room and formally introduces himself as the professor.  He tells her about Javier's situation and tells her she can count on him for whatever.  However, he's called away by La Muerte and notices a black butterfly has just flown onto Lupi's bed.
  • On another side of town, Maru/Homer? is chugging down his ninth malt...liquor as he looks at pictures of his wife, Cecilia, and her new boyfriend and wonders if she wasn't screwing the other dude before he died.  The dead girl's mama gripes at him for drinking and he bullies her into shutting the F up.
  • Jake asks Santos if he knows how long a body has before dying again.  Santos hasn't any clue.  The only thing Santos has learned is that Lady Death gets her way and one never knows what she's about; she's fickle and does whatever she has the whim to do.
  • ==========================

  • Parte 2~~
  • Armenta ends the evening by feeling Lucia up and telling her she now belongs to him and will remain that way despite her excuses, they'll be bedding if not wedding regularly.
  • Lucia arrives home to another bit of cheer--Eva as a house guest.  It's late, nothing to drink for Lucia.  Eva whips a snide accusation to Daddy's widow.  "--That's right.  It is late.  What are you doing walking the streets so late?"  "--It's my house and I will come and go as I please."  So, how long for Eva's house remodelling to get finished?  Eva replies it's none of Lucia's business and she's going to stay "for a week, a month or a year --however long it takes for the refurbishing to get done!" Not her problem!  No, says Lucia sweetly.  Eva's Val and Guille's sister and "--therefore you may stay in my house" as long as you like.  She turns on her CMF heels and heads to her bedroom.
  • Matteo is getting information about El Sierra from another greedy one of the gang of goons.  The "source" informs him that there's a rich woman who is paid to launder the gang's dirty money.  Mat wants to meet with El Alacran.  The goon says not now.  Later sometime and warns him Mat'll be playing with fire by doing that.
  • Johny arrives home and finds another note in Leo's handwriting lying on the floor.  The note taunts him.  "How does it feel reading this?  Are you enjoying yourself or are you getting frightened?  You know m handwriting! --León."  Johny drops the letter and races upstairs.
  • Jakcòn is looking at pictures of him, JC and Lucia and no doubt thinking vengeful thoughts.  He notices that the mark on his neck is oozing again and he remember's Santos's words about it happening when he does something wrong.
  • Johny asks his guard whether he saw anybody shove a note under his front door.  The guy didn't see a thing.  Johny then goes to the head of security and badgers him till they get a video of a hooded man dropping off the note in near darkness.
  • Jacón is cleaning the blood off his back and looking at Leo's mug in the mirror when Lucia calls.  It's probably long after midnight.  She tells Jake that he was right that Armenta only wants to sleep with her.  "--Well, did he manage it?"  "--Of course not!  I'm not sleeping with an old geezer like that!"  "--Then, León Carvajal was an old geezer?" "--Hey!!  A little respect here!  You obviously didn't know León Carvajal that well.  He never was the type to pressure me into doing anything I didn't feel like doing.  He was the kindest and gentlest man I ever met."  Jake does a major eye-roll here.  "--So you didn't sleep with narco?"  "--No!  Not a chance!"  "-And Johny Corona?"  "--No.  I cannot imagine any lips but those of the man I'm falling in love with.  And, Jacobo Reyes, that man is you."
  • Now at Barbara's, there's a bit of mystical mystery making her nervous.  She notes she had her new crystal ball totally covered.  She puts the scarf over it again and goes to bed.  Lights go out in the house, but one goes on inside the crystal ball.  A single black butterfly light on it.  (Bwahahahahahaha!)
  • Back at Camilo's, Jake and Lucia flirt a bit.  "--Are you telling me the truth, ma'am?"  "--Would you like me to lie?  I haven't been this truthful in a heck of a long while."  "--It's just that a confession like that should be told in person, not by phone."  "--What are you waiting for to show up in my bedroom?  Just like last time, without an invitation, and let what's got to happen happen," "--It's that I have to rest, ma'am.  I have to come to work tomorrow.  Eh, well if you continue to feel the same, we'll agree on something." "--Whatever you want."  They hang up and she smiles to herself--the satisfied smile of a woman falling in love.   (Viewerville gives up a communal "awwww.")
  • At the same time that Belchin complains to Santos on the phone that he wants his own body back, wants to meet Jacobo Reyes and is tired of living in a skinny bag-o'-bones body,  He's tired of telling everybody he's Beltran Camacho.  Javier wakes to go to the bathroom.  He overhears Belchin bitchin'.  He calls Belchin' on it.  Belchin says he's got a skinny body and realizes it.  He's now got a friend at the gym and is eager to put meat on his bones.  The boy understands this and they exchange satisfying hugs.
  • A bit later, Lucia looks over at Leo's picture and weeps a bit while drinking a shot of the hard stuff.  "--If only...." is as far as Viewerville interprets with this scene....
  • Mat and Eva make love in one of the guest rooms after she tries eavesdropping at Lucia's bedroom door.
  • Fabian? somehow locates El Alacran and the gang of ghouls.  He's threatened for trying to look for El Chino.
  • The next morning at the Carvajal manse's security hut, Johny takes Fabricio by surprise.  He tricks him out of his gun and then pulls it on him.  He demands to know about the hooded man who left him that note under the door.

Thanks, Jardinera. I'll be anxiously waiting for the other parts.

I was disappointed in the way Lucia was able to finagle out of of a very precarious situation. IMO it was too easy...Armenta caving in so quickly was unrealistic to me. And then she waltzes into her house all smiles and has enough gumption to throw Eva a couple of jabs. I think I would have gone straight to my room and taken a shower after a few shots of tequila.

RGVchick: ITA. Oh, well. Eva deserved getting her face figuratively slapped and I did enjoy that. It was worth the wait for that shower.
Je-je-jee.

Thank you, Jardinera.

Chickie, yes, I would definitely have jumped straight into the shower ...Then maybe a whiskey sour on the rocks and prayers. That old guy is creepysmarmy. Ugh.

I agree Rgv Chick, Lucia got out of that way too easily. In real life, I doubt that Armenta would be so easily manipulated. But I'm glad she did escape his greasy clutches for now.

Always enjoy your sassy recaps, Jardinera. This quip especially:

Either time to powder her nose or time to take a taxi home cuz she's done with the B.S. from J.C.--and it ain't jesu cristo, though ol' Johny would take credit for that also if he could.....

Yes, ol' Johny is taking credit right and left for stuff he never did (aka helping that kid get into college). I get a stomach ache just thinking about this loathsome character.

Do still just melt though when skinny old Beltrán is on the scene--for instance, the clever and loving way he reassured his son who heard him complaining about being in the wrong body. Loved how he flipped it into the need to work out so he and Javier could play futból again. Totally charmed by this sicario turned loving dad and savior of women in peril.

On the other hand, Hector/Maru seems to be a very slow learner and nothing bodes well for his future plans.

But, nary a dull moment. This story continues to intrigue me.

And love your recaps. Thanks.

I think Armenta got quite upset with Lucia’s quip that “I will feel NADA in bed!” That majorly set him back and probably made him think he really did need a new tactic! So...charm, moolah, threats - nothing seems to be working. Not sure what is left—-except some more really serious or embarrassing threats !?

I’m wondering if i missed something but i did not see Beltran paying for the expensive surgery. Did that already happen?

I know this is fantasy, so to speak, but how can there be so many transmigrated souls in one little geographic area?
Carole. AMOT

Carole..There was just one quick scene Thursday Night, I believe, of Beltrino and the Doctor with the Doctor implying that the bill had been paid. It never showed Belt paying, but the Doctor said something to the effect of "Now that it is paid for we will get the transplant done quickly." and I remember thinking."Transplant? From Whom? Did you have one in the freezer Doc?"

"Mat and Eva make love in one of the guest rooms after she tries eavesdropping at Lucia's bedroom door."

Best!

Eva as Peeping Tom/Nosy Parker-priceless.

Lucia and Jacobo had a huge fight before her kidnapping. I haven't understood reasons for Lucia's confession and invitation. She was happy for narrow escape, or maybe because black-shirt goon, (before Lucia elbows his nose)told her that Jacobo has been calling often?

That's because Johnny told Lucia that she should definitely go see Armenta and she sheepishly said "OK." Another strange scene.

Kirby. Thanks for that explanation. I must have dozed off during that Doctor scene- ha ha. I didn't even realize it was a transplant--I just thought it was a super expensive operation.
Amot

Amot: I was wrong, it was Wednesday night. But yes it is for a transplant.

"Coming up the stairs in the hospital, the doctor is glad they got the money, he can now schedule the transplant which needs to be soon based on the test results. He tells them not to worry, the most important thing in these cases is the money and they already have it. When Beltrino tells him that he moved heaven and earth to get the money (as he winks at Alicia) and would do it again to save his son’s life, the doctor congratulates him and tells him he will prepare the paperwork."

That may be as close as we have seen to him actually paying for it.

Thanks for the info, Kirby. I missed the finer details of that conversation. I try listening sometimes without looking at the CC and the audio or the accents and sometimes just the actors' sloppy diction cause me such frustration. Then I go to a ton like n Tierras Salvaje and listen to actors' like Romo and Cesar Evora and my ears are in wooded wonderland heaven. Never an errant syllable from either of those two.😏🤓

Enough Tierras Salvajes

En,. Sheesh! Auto correct needs improvements

Judy B, yep, purley Dickensian. Uriah Help in a shorter, thicker body but no less slimy. Sometimes I wonder if these other cultures have read the most renouned English authors. Or is it they're just good at imitating the worst of human nature as a matter of course.

Susanlynn, I am glad you are not dozing off with this one. I t is one of the best in a month of Mexican Sundays

JudyB

Hector/Maru has such a terrible attitude and has no patience. She should follow Lady Muerto.

It is a bummer that Mexico's healthcare does not pay for organ transplants. To me, that's like letting all d poor people die.

Jardinera654

I'm loving Tierras Salvajes. The plot is very tricky and deals with conflict between family members.

The dictation of CE and DR is so clear, not like the actors of today. DR looks great after recovering from cancer surgery.

I’ll be commenting on AAM later, but I had to throw my 2 cents in on En Tierras Salvajes. If you want to see some Fashion Faux Pas, get a load of what they are making Claudia Alvarez wear—so inappropriate. The off the shoulder blouses with sleeves as big as sheets just don’t work. She doesn’t come across as sexy or even attractive at all. Her hair style is too plain. The only ones who dress well are the antagonists—Lisardo, Diego Olivera and Daniela Romo.

OT, Anita, yup,a fashion disaster!!

OT, Victoria, it is a good old fashioned tn, for sure. But I love it because it is chuck full of Univision acting favorites.

I'm new to Caray, and I love the site. I've really been able to improve my limited Spanish skills. I try watching without the closed captions, and I am so amazed that you guys, the recappers, take so much of your time to provide the very detailed recaps I've been reading.

There are two things I'd like to comment on:

1) To me, seeing the advances at the bottom of the recap is a real bummer for me. I think they are like spoilers. I don't read the Wikipedia site for the novelas because they don't care if spoilers are added.

2). Thanks to the recappers who put the episode number in the heading. Since Univision tends to change the airing of an episode, the beginning and ending times, and sometimes they air only ~ ½ hour episodes.

I can't thank enough all the recappers. I'm astonished by the detail you guys pay to recapping each episode.

Great recap,and thanks!

I wasn't too surprised that Lucia got out of it and I completely expected what happened in the library. Since her own mother had turned her out as a prostitute when she was young I'll bet Armenta reminds her of some of her clients of that era. It's no way to make a living if one wants to maintain any level of sanity and self-respect. I see blackmail attempts in the future.

El Chino's redemption is beyond unrealistic. He was a stone-cold killer in the opening episode and those guys don't change in the real world.

ITA, Urban. Guess in telenovelaland, one sick child just counts more.

Steve, I think Lucho has suspected, but like some of Viewerville, doesn't want to have to deal with it.//also Lupified on the operating table for a minute or two. Lady Death has, I think, possibly marked her with the butterfly.

Jardinera654

But why has the Lady of Death marked Lupita? If I could figure that out, I'd be more inclined to agree.

I don't think any of us are really clear on the what, how, why of Lady Muerte. Probably purposely confusing!
Also, I've been thinking how inserting the TRANSPLANT "issue" is such a perfect telenovela option --generates revelations on love, compassion, DNA results, etc etc.
AMOT

Now is the time to come to the aid of....well time to thank Jardinera for a rip-roaring romp through the episode.

New Anon at 12:19 - welcome and you will find this a nice group to reveal yourself to by either picking a name to use or sign your comment with a name of your choice, so we don't confuse you with the other Anons.

Because Johny makes my stomach churn every time he comes on the screen, I'm obsessed with his unctuous obsequiousness. I've come to this conclusion: It's part personality, part manipulation. He knows how to brown nose people into becoming beholden to him--in dollars and SENSElessness. He picks his target and showers them with compliments and concerns toward problems or family members. Then he performs a great favor (or, as RGV Chick pointed out in the last episode--he takes credit for things he didn't do). His next step is to remind them of the great favor he did, so how about a return, favor for favor. He sure worked Cardenas to a T, building up to what he really wants, yet couching it in some way to make it sound legitimate. Oooh, I just hate that, but I love watching him do it. I KNEW Cardenas would end up having to report any irregularities to Johny and then they will disappear into File 13.

I wonder what he has up his clerical shirt sleeve for presidential candidate, Sanchez-Bueno.

Susana may be the first person who actually saw through and rebuffed his tactic. He probably doesn't have another playbook to use and doesn't know how to proceed. It is likely that when we see Lucia cave meekly to his requests, she has to at this point. She's the ending, not the first chapter of his playbook, like Susana.

Could some of Sra Muerte's butterflies be designed to confuse viewerville? And what of Barbara's magic seeing-eye sphere. When will we get to see it work again? Is it going to be a force for good or for bad?

Poor Jake, he suspects his days in this body are numbered and he will have to hurry up to make things right with his kids. OTOH, he's enjoying what he's doing with Lucia, knowing his real body is moldering six feet under.

Beltino, at least, has a chance to get his El Chino body back, but we still don't know where Beltran's soul landed. These things plague me. I hope the writers will provide us with a halfway decent explanation. (I don't think Beltran will want to wear Jake's suits, though.)

I know UA and Jardinera are right when they say real assassins don't do a 180 degree turnaround like Belchino has. But since this is a telenovela (adult fairy tale) I'm loving every minute of it. The actor is so good at expressing tenderness just with his eyes and smile, while alternating it with some brusque and rough ways of speaking to people. I can't help it, I just melt when this awkward, somewhat homely actor puts on the charm. Totally smitten with the character and the actor playing him.

Anita...... ITA agree with your thought: I hope the writers will provide us with a halfway decent explanation.
However, at the moment, I cannot imagine how!! It's so damn confusing at times.
AMOT

Did anyone catch the irony of Mayela complaining about Lucas’ insinuations about their relationship on camera and in public? Wasn’t that what she was doing to Guille? Thick-headed woman.

Anita, I believe someone wrote in one of the recaps: "Stalker, meet Stalker have fun." about that little exchange between those two.

Musta been you. Thanks for the reminder.
