Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Jueves 3/21/19, Episode 8: Sociopaths
I'm
Christopher Mason. One does not need to be a lifetime criminal to be
a sociopath. All it takes is a lack of ethics, a lack of empathy,
and an unerring instinct for self-preservation at all costs.
However, that does not always guarantee success, as we saw with
Jacinto Dorantes. All because he let his guard down when he should
have raised it higher. Julio Cervantes is also riding to a fall; he
is no master criminal but only because he hasn't had adequate
practice.
I'm
Candice DeLong. Whether sociopaths are born or made, they start
young. They're the ones who feel that the rules of society don't
apply to them. While they don't all become criminals, they typically
do not care about other people and behave accordingly.
There
was a potential riot in the cell block as Jacinto's body was zipped
into a body bag and removed. The prisoners were all locked in their
cells except for Ramiro, who looked like he was still in shock. One
guard said to another “He committed suicide” but Ramiro loudly
denied that this was possible. A few moments later he was leaning
against the wall when one of the killer guards made a call to “el
patron”
who was none other than El Ciego himself. “I love starting off the morning with goo news,” he said, then promised a hefty payment for this dirty job. He then walked away, apparently not noticing that Ramiro was there, crying.
Miriam
told Alejandra that this had not been the first time her husband had
hit her. There were two previous occasions, the second of which got
her hospitalized with a broken arm and broken rib. Alejandra asked
for the name of the hospital that treated her. She asked whether he
had ever mistreated the children and she answered that he had not.
She was worried about her children now and Alejandra's news about
Jacob caused her to panic. She explained that Jacob was all military
and that he respected nothing else. Alejandra explained that she
would go after him to get the children back. She also explained that
the murder charge would be handled by her colleague while she went to
the US to get the children back. She had her sign the document about
the meeting and told her she had to tell her everything she knew
about Jacob so she would be prepared.
Sociopaths
often occur in clusters in families. Where there is one violent
person, there usually are others. It can also be the result of brain
injuries, which may have been the case with Phillip, who then would
have repeated the behavior.
Roberto
and Juan looked at a security camera video taken the day of Sergio's
murder. The crime had occurred at about one in the afternoon. They
watched Sergio and Julio walking toward the corner and Julio picking
up the dog. They then turned the corner out of view of this camera.
A few seconds later two men ran from that same area back up the
street. There was no camera on the adjacent block and Roberto did
not think this a coincidence.
Adrián
Carballo was in the reception area awaiting his appointment. He was
a handsome man in his early to mid thirties with a Castilian accent.
Carmen brought him coffee while he waited for his meeting with
Alonso. He saw Victoria and got up to introduce himself.
It
looks like both liked what they saw. But it would be incredibly
foolish to act on this.
Roberto
and Juan reviewed the security footage and saw the two men a few
minutes prior to the attack entering the blind zone. Roberto told
Juan to get the still images to the police immediately. Juan noticed
an earlier pass by the two men who had passed a young man with a cell
phone and they had not tried to steal it. Nor had there been other attacks that day.
Alonso
interviewed Adrián and offered him the position. He was needing
more criminal law specialists at the moment and was impressed with
his record. He told him that they do not take clients who are
narcotrafficantes or killers of children. Adrián was satisfied with
the salary offer and Alonso welcomed him to the firm.
It
looks like he could be very seriously competitive with Roberto in
more than one kind of room.
Julio
lay across Eva's lap as she played with his hair. He told her he had
not yet obtained the money. She told him not to worry about it. She
suggested they take a bath to relieve the stress, but Raquel's
arrival prevented that. She told him she had to talk to him. She
tried to dismiss Eva, but Julio didn't let her, saying anything she
wants to say could be said in front of her. He asked whether the
thieves had been found. Raquel told him that it was much more
complicated than that. She started with the forensic test on
Ariadna, saying that her death was not a suicide. Julio and Eva
looked at each other. Eva said this could not be. Raquel said she
wanted to believe otherwise because she could not believe that her
sister would commit suicide;t this was all a set-up.
Eva
is likely to be the mastermind here. She has no emotions about what
happened except for the fear of being found out.
Alonso
told Adrián he could start in the morning. He wanted more eyes on
the Dorantes case. Adrián was eager to begin. They shook hands and
he left.
Raquel
asked where Julio thought of going. Julio said “Wherever” and
Eva replied “far away from Mexico.” Raquel told Julio he
couldn't leave her alone with this.Julio spoke of being in danger and
Eva said that he should be far away from that. Raquel said to give
it two days. They wouldl get bodyguards while the police did their
job. He was needed to help and they had to stick together. He
agreed (rather reluctantly).
Eva
doesn't look happy about this. Obviously they had plans for the
money that Julio isn't getting now.
Alonso
talked to Gustavo in his office. He told him that every day the loss
seems worse. Alonso told him that finding the killers is a priority
and they were considering a criminal law specialist named Javier
Rivas. He would also help. Carmen called him and they were urgently
needed elsewhere.
Juan
came back and ran down the tasks. He had also requisitioned images
from the security cameras around the Cervantes house from the day of
Ariadna's death. Neither of them could think of any motive to hurt
or kill members of this family. They thought it would have to have
been something personal and went through a few possibilities.
They
haven't met Eva yet. And Roberto should notice that there is
something very creepy about her.
She
is already a Deadly Woman.
Carmen
showed Louisa Ortega into Victoria's office. She was looking for an
increase in child support from her ex-husband because her income is
not keeping pace with need. Victoria asked whether she could prove
need. She replied that she was looking to get half her ex's salary.
Victoria stared at her.
Quiróz
lifted up the sheet in the coroner's office with Alonso, Ricardo, and
Gustavo looking on. “He was found hanging in his cell. Looks like
a suicide.” Alonso was not so sure because it didn't make sense.
Quiróz left the room and Gustavo lost his cool yet again, thinking
that Dorantes committed suicide to avoid having to reveal the
killers' names. Alonso pointed out that a man like Jacinto Dorantes
would have enemies who would want him dead. Gustavo might have
ripped the corpse into pieces if not for Ricardo, who restrained him.
Victoria
questioned Louisa to determine what her game was. She suspected that
her client was using her son to get money she didn't need for him.
She got her to admit that she was home for him when he came home from
school. This didn't sound like someone who “worked all day.”
She replied that she swapped time with her sister. Victoria told her
that the money she was getting from her ex was exclusively for the
care of her son. Her own salary was stable so this amount was fair.
Her client replied that what wasn't fair was that she would work in
an office all day while her ex was cavorting with another woman. She
wanted to make sure he couldn't afford that. Victoria told her that
this would not fly in court. Her ex has been compliant in paying the
child support decreed by the court. Her motive for getting more
money would be considered in bad faith and she had no legal recourse.
She told her she would not represent her. Louisa said a few
insulting words and walked out.
Alonso,
Ricardo, and Gustavo talked about what to do next. Ramiro would not
talk when Ricardo had visited him before. Gustavo pointed out that
someone like Jacinto Dorantes would have many enemies. It wasn't
easy to kill someone in prison, so they should take advantage of
Ramiro's fear to get information out of him. He had to hope to talk
to him with no one else there to listen because Ramiro was the only
answer.
Juan
was looking at flat screen television sets in an electronics store
and seemed to have decided on one when Tatiana apeared behind him.
She was looking for a gift for her son and Juan offered to buy it.
They walked together to the relevant department.
Watch
out, Juan. Fernanda misinterpreted this friendship once before. You
don't want that to happen again.
Alejandra
and Sofia were discussing Miriam's case when Ricardo came in with the
news of Dorantes' death. All thought it strange and Ricardo told
them he was going to see Ramiro about it. Alejandro told him to be
careful.
Juan
had bought something for Tatiana's son and she was as happy as though
she had just won the lottery. He told her about their recent case
and his promotion,his new office. She grinned ear to ear and began
flirting with him. The sales clerk returned with his bill. She
kissed him on the lips before sashaying away.
I
really hope Juan doesn't make the mistake of buying slutwear for
Fernanda.
Victoria
told Roberto about turning down Louisa Ortega's outrageous request
and a few sentences later he told her how much he missed her. She
told them they were better off keeping their distance from each
other. He is still determined to win her.
Juan
moved some furniture around to make room for the new television sets
and new refrigerator. Susanna was a little overwhelmed but Juan told
her that now they don't have to “make do” anymore. They could
have what they deserve. Susanna told Juan all she wanted was for him
to be happy. She wanted him to save his money.
Ricardo
visited Ramiro in prison. Ramiro told him sotto voce that his
brotherh would never have killed himself. Ricardo asked whether
Ramiro knew who had killed his brother.and Ramiro said he had no
idea. He kept an eye on the guards. He accused Ricardo's firm for
provoking this. Ricardo told him he was prepared to negotiate his
release for the right information. Ramiro looked very tempted, but
said he couldn't because he didn't want to end up like his brother.
All Ricardo was asking for was one name. Ramiro told him he had no
idea who was behind all this. He pointed at him and said “If I help
you they would kill everyone.”
Carlos
and Alan were in the office late and both read the news about Jacinto
Dorantes. They were grateful and Alan said Carlos was right to
refuse him as a client. He handed over balance sheets from the
foundation and said to review them. Carlos said he would do so in
the morning. He thanked him for everything he was doing. Alan had
gained his trust.
And
this will be Carlos' downfall.
“Who
are you afraid of?” Ricardo asked. Ramiro didn't answer. Ricardo
told him that if he changed his mind he knew how to contact him. He
then hung up the phone and left. The guard escorted Ramiro back to
his cell.
Carlos
and Alan continued working until Carlos' cell rang. It was an
employee of El Ciego and he was calling from jail. Carlos said he
would be right over. Alan said that this guy and his employees were
treating him like a servant.
Alejandra
dined with her parents who told her she was looking tired and that
she needed some rest. She explained she couldn't now because she had
a difficult case that was sending her to the USA. Paula told her she
needed to balance her life, etc.
Alan
told Carlos that they couldn't go on like this. They needed more
clients and El Ciego had to learn that they don't work just for him.
Carlos said he would deal with that in the morning.
The
next morning Ricardo and Alonso discussed the latter's conversation
with Ramiro. Alonso didn't want Ricardo getting in any deeper and
putting himself at greater risk. He spoke of getting a criminology
expert on the case.
Alejandra
found two arrest records on Jacob Robbins, both charges involving
aggression. She showed this to Sofia, knowing that this is important
in their case. She called the policeman in Jaccob's town and found
out that the children were with Annie and Joe Robbins. While this
was acceptable for the moment, she told Sofia that they could not
waste any time.
While
the Marines often earn tremendous respect in the US, there are a
disproportionate number of serial killers who had military
backgrounds. This Jacob Rollins has a hot temper and is likely to own
firearms.
Roberto
and Juan checked the security camera footage from the entrance to the
Cervantes house. They saw Julio and Eva opening the door to the two
suspects. Roberto got a call and they immediately headed out to the
police station.
Fernanda
stopped at Susanna's and saw the new things Juan had bought. She was
impressed and told Susanna she wanted to prepare dinner and bake a
cake for the occasion.
Raquel
arrived at her sister's house to see Julio and Eva with suitcases.
He said that he had thought it over and they decided it was better
for them to leave. Raquel said that she had good news, that one of
the killers had been arrested and was now being interrogated by the
police. Roberto had called her and said to bring him down to the
station for identification.
Roberto
interrogated the suspect, telling him he had videos and still photos
to prove he was responsible for two deaths. The man – Mattias –
denied having killed either Sergio Cervantes or his wife. Roberto
and Juan pressed him to tell them who had. The man looked around,
confused.
About
4% of the general population are believed to be sociopaths while 25%
of male criminal offenders are. These are not odds to laugh at.
Definitely
not, and the combination of Julio Cervantes and his little Eva looks
like another killer couple waiting to happen if they get away
with this. Nobody wants another Caryll Fugate and Charles
Starkweather on the loose. But we think it won't be long before Julio
cracks like a coconut dropped from a hotel balcony. Until next we

What a marvelous recap, Urban! I loved your description of Adrian as potentially "competitive with Roberto in more than one kind of room." Auch. And the image of Julio "cracking like a coconut dropped from a hotel balcony" -- sweet! I wish someone really would drop him from a hotel balcony.
What is up with Sofia? She blandly comments that Rob & Vic make a cute couple, but whenever Ric touches Ale she stares at them like a cat watching a birdfeeder through the window. I wouldn't be surprised if she started chittering.
I laughed out loud when Ale found out everything she needed to know by typing "Jacob Robbins mugshot" into El Googlio. I think I could be a lawyer in Alternate Mexico!

What? Pre-emptions already? I just started the schedule spreadsheet and already a revision. At least I haven't sent it out yet. There is likely to be a revision for Good Friday as well.
This is the highest number of consecutive episodes I've ever done for any series so far. I really need to cut back on screengrabs, so I've decided that once I've established the evil of a character -- like Eva -- I will limit it to one per scene. Fortunately, the length of each episode seems to be relaxing back to 44 minutes rather than the 57 of the first two.
I wonder how they will explain Adrian's Castilian accent.

Adrian said he had "finished up his education in Mexico, and then stayed on," so I think they're just going to let him be Spanish. ;}

I finally came to the conclusion that they had been loitering and when they saw Julio and Sergio pass--right when Julio picked up the dog (a signal maybe?). Then they ran back into view a little bit later. And I did pick up that no video existed for the street where the murder actually took place. That was a surprise to have the video from outside Julio's house show the same two being shown in. I must have missed that scene. Must rewind.

I've been addicted to true crime videos on YouTube for a while now. Would you believe there is an 8-year-old serial killer? You can't make this shit up.
What I think is that Raquel is slowly realizing there is something seriously wrong here and that Eva is at least an agent of the situation. I've been thinking for the last two episodes that she senses something isn't right and may be very reluctant to face it. She should look in Miriam's room to see if there is jewelry missing that could be sold for enough money to get plane tickets. Does Julio have any credit cards that were attached to his parents'? If there a car he could sell?
And what will Roberto do when he connects all the dots?

Urban - Thank you for this awesome recap! Really found the criminal and psychological aspects of sociopathy as presented by Chris and Candice (and you) fascinating and quite chilling. Don't really understand why Ale thinks she can just go to Texas and pick up the children; it's way more complicated than that - beanie time. Think the new attorneys at the bufete are going to make things interesting. Thanks again for ALL the recaps. Have a great weekend everyone:-)

We know nothing about Eva other than what we've seen. We haven't seen her parents, we don't know how long she is involved with Julio, and we don't know where they met. Miriam didn't seem to object to her presence at Sergio's funeral but Raquel wanted her to leave when she was looking to talk to Julio. I hope we get that answer soon.

I like the actor who plays Ramiro. Very expressive face, when he smiles, when he's scared etc. Now he is without the brother that led him into his criminal world.

Fernando seemed to like that kiss on the lips too much. He's living large now and I predict he will screw things up with his novia.
I too look forward to Mendez coming. Those dreamy eyes are just what the bufete needs! But take issue with all the women lawyers being confined to the young and hot while the male lawyers run the gamut on age and looks. Where is the older woman prosecutor from Season 1? Maybe she's looking to switch sides.

Niecie--The financial crimes expert was Benjamin. He would be insignificant without Leticia, besides, was he put in jail or just dismissed for his own financial crimes.
Anita, oh right. He's in prison. His friend in money laundering Carlos promised to give him a helping hand.
That's right. He could be the one to bring Carlos down. And the actress who played Leticia is now at another network, so we won't be seeing her again.
Because these cases don't last more than a week or two. I somehow doubt that our Deadly Teens will be able to kill her; I don't think the writers will take us down that path.
Is it just me or do all the actors seem to be overacting this season? Particularly, Zepeda and Ana Brenda. Granted, some of the dialogue is supposed to be dramatic, but they are really taking it over the top, with their bobbing heads and pointing fingers to get their points across. Instead of confident and forceful they come across as self-righteous and preachy. It's almost as if they're trying to "justify" The second season. They all need to relax and take it down a notch. Or two. Or three. The actor playing Juan, also, but he was like that the first season. I see no improvement in his acting skills.
Speaking of Juan, all of a sudden he seems to be very materialistic. His promotion and raise seem to have gone straight to his head. His mother keeps looking at him as if she doesn't recognize him. All her teachings seem to have gone out the window.
And Victoria? She is really ridiculous with that game she's playing with Roberto. Always giving him those come-hither looks, only to put up a wall for him to crash into time and again. If she REALLY doesn't want to get involved with him, she should treat him like she treats Ricardo, or Gustavo, or Alonso. Stop having him over, letting him sleep over, undressing in front of him as she walks away. She's always wearing her skin-tight, short dresses, then sits on his desk, crossing her legs and letting him get within kissing distance only to spurn him. She's a huge tease, and she knows it. They should bring on a new female to catch his eye, instead of another guy (Adrian) to catch hers. This story line has been dragging on too long. Not cute and not interesting.

I think Juan is just happy to be able to buy those things for his mother knowing that she has worked her butt off since his father died. I don't think he will go nuts buying an expensive car or anything he really can't afford. He is still somewhat immature emotionally despite his professional position.
As for Victoria, she should know better than to fool around in the office. Let Sofia be the new Office Slut; I'd rather Victoria remain the relatively high-minded woman we met last season. What she's doing to Roberto is some payback for his playboy ways, but this can go too far very soon.

Vicky needs to talk to somebody. Ale? Roberto has been nothing but devoted to her for sometime now. What does she want? For him to put a ring on it? If so, speak up, mujer.
There has to be. I'm guessing she was abandoned at some point, maybe had to have an abortion, or deal with an STD. Or someone close to her. Whatever it is it's really foolish to get involved with a colleague. Especially one with his track record.
Does anyone know which novela garnered, on average, the most comments and how many on average? Just a WAG???? And curious trivia .

The content of the offerings by the two main channels Caray covers has changed dramatically over the last decade. So it would be like comparing apples and oranges to rotten bananas and squished mangoes.
