TELEMUNDO Y MÁS (#1): Betty en NY, La Reina del Sur 1, y más: Week of March 4, 2019
Welcome to Page #1 (Monday edition) of the Telemundo y Más page, issued twice a week: Mondays and Thursdays at 8:00 PM.
Here are the current evening telenovelas (all times are Eastern Standard Time):
• 9-10PM—Betty en NY
• 10-11PM—La Reina del Sur - Season 1**
**The second season of La Reina del Sur will begin on April 22. To attract and prepare viewers for Season 2, Telemundo is presenting a somewhat abridged version (la Edición Especial) of the highly acclaimed Season 1 in the 10 PM time slot beginning this Monday, March 4. I think the unabridged version is the best telenovela I've ever seen. I suspect that even an abridged version will be well worth watching. To make room for Reina 1, El Barón has been relegated to the 1:00-2:00 AM time slot.

Thanks, Juantta, for letting us know about the summarized version of La Reina 1. It might be nice as a review before the new season starts.

Well, I watched the first episode in Telemundo's Edición Especial, and I really liked it! I say that as someone who saw and loved the original presentation of Reina 1. But I don't think you have to have seen Reina 1 to enjoy this somewhat abridged version. Indeed, I think it's intended for people who haven't seen Reina 1 (Telemundo wants them to be well prepared for Reina 2). In short, I think it's likely to be enjoyed by those who have and those who haven't seen the original.

OK, I'm hooked! I wasn't sure whether I'd be bored watching Telemundo's abridged version of Reina 1, since I'd already seen the original once and parts of it twice. But after two episodes, I'm finding I still love it! I'm pretty sure I'm going to stop watching Betty en NY and just watch the abridged Reina 1 at 10 pm. I'm really pretty fed up with Betty en NY. Parts of it are fun, but there's far too much absurd and by now all-too-predictable stupidity. I find myself struggling to stay awake. I don't know whether other people feel this way, or even whether anyone else is watching it. But I've had my fill.

I'm also watching, and enjoying again. I recommended this novela to another Spanish class friend. [I'm now considered the class expert on which TNs are any good!] Then, after watching the first episode again, I wondered if she might be put off by the violence in the first episode: wife and two children shot down by Ratas and Pote, although I'm sure it was Ratas who chose to kill the children. Plus the extremely graphic rape. I'll ask her tonight if she's begun it on Netflix and, if not, I'll reassure her that the whole novela is not 100% dark.
I was again SO impressed with Kate's acting, especially the scene with Epifanio in the "Malverde" church. I had sort of forgotten this, but there is an image in the church of Jesús Malverde, the Robin Hood guy of Sinaloa, who is worshipped as a saint, especially by narcos. Unclear if everything attributed to this guy is true, but he supposedly lived from 1870 to 1909, during the Porfiriato.
Anyway, Kate's trembling fear and begging for her life were amazing.

Thanks very much, novelera, for your thoughts about Reina1a (I'm trying to distinguish it from the unabridged Reina1 and the upcoming Reina2). I definitely agree with you about Kate's performance in the scene with Epifanio in the church. I was similarly impressed by the early scenes between Kate and Rafael Amaya as they were meeting and getting to know each other. Both actors were superb.
As for the violence, yes, Reina1 might turn some people off for that reason. It wasn't continually violent, but, as you know, there's an occasional really grim scene. Of course, given the subject matter, it wouldn't have made sense NOT to have violence. I'm not a fan of violence, and I avoid chainsaw-massacre-type movies, but I would NEVER avoid Reina1. It has nothing in common with such films.
And yes, right from the start, the novela distinguishes between the sick, blood-thirsty Ratas and his partner in crime, Pote. Pote urges Ratas to respect their former partner, El Güero, and his woman, Teresa, whereas all Ratas wants to do is rape and kill.

If they only put this abridged version OnDemand which it isn’t. Oh, well, I may rewatch the last few episodes of season 1 before season 2 starts. In spite of the extreme violence, I have considered episode 1 to be a mini masterpiece in its own right. It sure hooked me from the chase to the never ending corrido (song). Loved it.

Jarifa, well said about epi 1 being a mini-masterpiece. This would be the third time I've seen the first episode. They don't explicitly mention El Día de los Muertos, that I can recall, but that procession of characters in costume was a masterful touch. And the guy in full skeleton makeup and costume who jumps toward Teresa - wow! Talk about symbolism!
I live near San Francisco. Each year for 30 years there has been a Día de los Muertos procession in the Mission District. Streets are closed and people walk through the area, many dressed in costumes and with faces pained as skulls. There are drummers and sometimes stilt walkers. I walked the route several times and did wear a costume. One year the theme was honoring young men killed in gang violence. At the end of the procession there are some decorated altars in a park.
