Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Viernes 5/17/19, Episode 46: Losses and Not Much More

*The Kiss Not
Bobby and Vicky have been trapped in the elevator since Wednesday night. Will they or won’t they? (C’mon, you two, get it over with.) Bobby tells her that avoiding him by burying her nose in all those books is harming her. He turns her towards him and moves in. Ooops. The doors open. Besointerruptus. Vicky throws him a go hither glance and gets off. Bobby has no daddy or tequila handy to soothe him.

*The Blind leading the Dumb
El Ciego checks with his guys on how they did on their assignment to distribute their “merca” in El Gringo’s territory. The guys reply it went great. They got rid of all of it. In fact folks were begging for it; they hadn’t been getting any. Henchies think El Gringo is gone. El Ciego doesn’t think that’s fair. El G. was out to kill him. He muses that if El Ciego were El Gringo, he’d stick around and finish the job. He tells his henchies to lay in the arms and armament for total war.

*Fanny Gets a Double Whammy
Karla is eating breakfast before school. She asks about her Mommy (Janeth). Fanny tells her that she has to stay in the hospital until she’s well enough to come home. They both miss her. Karla wants her to get well (dum-de-dum-dum prediction). She asks Fanny to give her a kiss. Fanny is sure she’ll feel better after that. She asks Karla to go Margarita’s house after school. Karla tells Fanny she loves her, too.

Fanny arrives at the hospital in time to overhear Granpa and Granma discussing their situation. Granpa says he’s going to make sure the doctors are informed that THEY are Janeth’s only family and no one else is permitted to have access to her, especially that hussy. Then they get the news that Janeth has not survived. Granma’s grief immediately turns to rage as she blames Fanny for her daughter’s slide into perversity and death. She’s not going to let this hussy do the same thing to her bio-grandchild. Later, when Fanny arrives at Karla’s school to take her out herself, she learns Granma and Granpa have already been there and taken her away. Fanny immediately goes to the gates of the house and confronts an angry harridan. Granma calls her the worst names in the lexicon of anti-lesbian rhetoric. Karla, who is old enough to know her own mind, cried out when she sees her mother and runs to embraces her. Granma yanks her away and tells her to go to her room, or at least back inside. Karla remains present during the hurricane of words, bawling and crying. But she stays where she is. Granma tells Fanny to leave or she’ll call the police and oh, by the way she won’t be permitted to attend Janeth’s wake and funeral. She shuts the gate door in Fanny’s face.

*The Companion
No, nothing sinister. Sofia has hired a nanny for her mother while she’s in NYC with Adrian on the Cristina case. She just wants peace of mind. They say goodbye at the door. [UA- maybe something happens now and we get a diagnosis.]

*Juan Gets Burned at Both Ends
Juanito presents Fer’s case to the judge. He explains how Fer developed this software and presented it to the two entrepreneurs, which in turn became part of the company Damián bought. He turns over documents to the court. Paez, full of overconfidence, explains how, when Damián bought the company, they bought all the software and immediately registered everything, software included. The judge wants to know when did the company learn it was the intellectual creation of the plaintiff?  Dam gets up and says condescendingly he didn’t know until the “muchacha” (clearly he should have said señorita) came to his office to complain. Fer jumps up and shouts he was very gross. Juan pulls her back down. The judge asks if she registered her software. Fer meekly answers, no. Juan argues that it is immaterial. They would not have been able to use the application without her software (a weak argument in itself), one she worked so hard to develop.

When final argument (we only hear Juanito) is given, Juan reveals the paltry amount that was offered his client as a settlement. He concedes she made a mistake not registering the software, but feels she deserves compensation for what she has suffered. The judge is ready with his decision. According to the law, Damián now owns the software, but the name on the product should be the plaintiff’s. He awards Fernanda 80,000 pesos. Paez says his client agrees. Fer is not pleased. She didn’t want the money, she just wanted her software back. She blames Juan and runs off, Juan right behind her. He tries to persuade her to see the rainbow at the end of the pot of gold pesos. She can use the money to do whatever she wants, develop more software, start her own company. Fer still thinks she was robbed. She charges that money seems to be his new thing (all while wearing a very nice dark green dress I envy). He’s changed. She doesn’t recognize him. They think too differently now. She breaks up with him right there. Juan counters that he worked hard to get where he is. Money solves a lot of problems. There’s nothing wrong with having more stuff, stuff he worked hard to get. She’s not having it. She doesn’t like who he has become. She breaks up for good, “y no me busques” (this ought to be a telenovela bingo square).

Meanwhile, Alan and Damián are congratulating themselves. Dam says the 80,000 is peanuts compared to what that software is worth to the company. He says he’s so pleased he’s going to recommend some new clients to Paez’s firm. Alan is appreciative. He says they won’t be disappointed.

Juan arrives back at Vega to cry on Bobby’s shoulders. Who can understand women, he complains. He relates the breakup to Bobby. Bobby recommends letting Fer simmer down and talk to her in a few days. Juan feels awful about arguing with her. He really cares for her. They decide flowers and chocolates aren’t going to be enough this time. Bobby tells Juan he’s too angry right then and recommends a session with his dad, Nicolas. Juan doesn’t know what good that will do, but Bobby makes the call. Juan thanks him in advance

Juan is back in his office and tries to call Fer. He’s sad and sulky. Tatiana makes a propitious entrance. She hugs him ‘cause she got the temp job, thanks to him. She comforts him on the outside, mirroring his sadness when she hears he’s broken up with his novia. She strokes his face and gets very close. Inside, she’s weighing her options. He goes into too much detail over the break-up and she continues to fawn over him. He feels he’s failed. She tries to convince him that Fer shouldn’t have treated him, a man with a great heart, that way. She doesn’t value him. Tati gets the right reaction from him—angry at Fer for not recognizing all he’s done for her. He doesn’t back up when she stands up to leave and gets a half-kiss on the side of his lips. Juan is a little rattled by his change in feelings.

*Take the Toddlers to Work Day
No sooner than Ric’s kids have settled in to his office, Vicky stops by. Natalia expresses her desire to become an attorney, just like Vick. Bobby walks in and seconds the idea. Vick is the perfect lawyer. Vick offers to take Natty off Ric’s hands for awhile and give her some work to do. Natty is thrilled. Fedde looks all too comfortable sitting at Ric’s desk, just sayin’. The toddlers seemingly have taken over Vega Associates. It was short-lived, however, Elena calls and wants them home. They don’t want to leave (they’re having too much fun—and not in school). Ric tells them he’s not sad anymore.

*The Knight in Shining Armor Arrives in Time
Lourdes is checking in on Paula. She’s still down in the dumps. She gets dumped on again when an official shows up with an eviction order and a crew of movers. The movers move in. Paula pleads with the official to give her a few more days. She loses it when the movers try to carry out a box of Alejandra’s possessions. Just as the scene is about to devolve into chaos, with Lourdes standing by watching, Jaime arrives with the injunction. The official tells the movers to put everything back. Paula melts into Jaime’s arms. Jaime lets Paula know that this isn’t over. It’s only a temporary stay to gain some time. The next step is to sue Gilberto. Paula is ready to press charges. After Jaime leaves, Lourdes suggests she not bring charges against Gilberto. Think what it’s doing to Alicia. Paula indicates that Alicia certainly wasn’t thinking of her. Lourdes finally comes around. Paula declares she is not going to lose her house because of them.

*Nancy and Carlos, Post-Coitus; Alan Sniffs Something in the Air
Well, actually they are dressed and in the office to start the day. Nancy brings in an appeal for Carlos to review and sign. He watches her leave. She watches him watching her leave. She makes a return trip so he can watch her all over again. She finally exits when Alan comes in. He reports on his win. Carlos doesn’t seem all that overjoyed. Alan complains that he’s not pleased that Carlos didn’t tell him about the case Carlos and Nancy are appealing and doesn’t like being shuffled off to the side on the firm’s business. Does it have something to do with Alejandra’s death? He wants to know what is going on with him. Carlos indicates he doesn’t need to tell him everything, despite his handing Alan controlling shares and making him an associate, something he now regrets. Alan suspects Carlos and Nancy have a thing going. Carlos gets huffy. So what? Alan warns him again to be careful. There’s something about Nancy. He  tells Carlos not to trust her.

*Pizza Interruptus
Just as Ric and the toddlers are leaving to get pizza, Fanny arrives, distraught and breathless. She doesn’t know what to do. They want to take her daughter away from her. Ric hands the kids off to Carmen and ushers Fanny into his office. She relates her relationship with Janeth, who just died a few hours ago. They had been a couple for a long time. They both underwent in vitro fertilization, but Fanny couldn’t get pregnant. The sperm donor is unknown. They considered themselves a couple, then a family, but they never married. Everything was ok, even though they couldn’t get along with Janeth’s parents. In fact, they hated Fanny and blamed her for changing Janeth’s sexual orientation. That’s why they say now they don’t want Karla to be with her. Karla is her daughter, she emphasizes that.

(PSA time: If you are a gay or lesbian couple, GET MARRIED if you don’t want this to happen to you. Even Ric says it.)

Ric says the case is not simple. Though they formed a family, they didn’t have it recognized officially. Fanny says they never felt the necessity to marry. They believed their love was enough. They never dreamed something like this would happen to them. (Of course, there’d be no Vega case if Karla were Fanny’s bio-child). Ric tells her that legally, the grandparents have standing to plead for custody. Fanny falls apart on Ric’s chest – the better to see Ric’s face—as he looks grim, but determined.

*Do the kids ever get their pizza?
Tune in Monday.

Besointerupptus. And. Pizza And puzzainteripptud! Very good.....and the toddlers take over Vega Bufete. Thnx..had me laughing.

"He watches her leave. She watches him watching her leave. She makes a return trip so he can watch her all over again."

Loved the scene. Loved your description of it.

Get these tiresome toddlers back to Canada and for Pete's sake, stop concocting stupid fights between Juan and his brainy novia so he can be tempted by tawdry Tatiana.

Clearly our bonita brainiac should have patented her app and the lesbian couple should have married once the law was passed. Especially since they had a child together. Sometimes these oversights just make me annoyed instead of distressed. Must be another cranky day. Need to take some compassion pills.

Thanks for a very witty, very thorough recap. Loved all the sub-headings also. Bien hecho Anita! Gracias.

Oh and apropos of nothing, thought Nancy's dress was rather cute. And no cleavage. It was a Doris Day kind of dress. Very proper but still showing all the curves.

I've never liked Juan. Even from the first season. His fawning all over Roberto, up to and including copying his "luke" (which, thankfully, was quickly nipped in the bud), his overreacting to the stolen tires ( "EVERYONE in this neighborhood is a jealous thief!), Etc, etc. And what exactly is "everything" he has done for Fer? It was SHE who helped him with his investigations through her computer expertise, put up with his over-involvement with Tatiana the Octopus (including him bringing her to stay at his mother's house "for protection" and now he just expects her to smile and count her money (all US$4,000 of it) because he tried and "she can do anything she wants with it, including start a business and come up with "many other" apps! Clearly, he has no concept of his much time and effort she put into it, and will never understand it because he just DOESN'T LISTEN to her. It's infuriating how he trivializes her work while always pontificating about his. And how much money he now makes. I hope he falls for Tatiana, it doesn't work out, and she takes him for all his new money. And Fer should team up with the Nerd twins, who were also taken advantage of by Damian and Alan, come up with a much better, competing app, start their own business, and blow the competition away. They will become gazillionaires (while not caring about the $$$) and live their best life, without a single thought wasted on Juan or Damian.

Anon at 5:35–
At last someone has unwrapped up Juan from his mysterious little package. I’ve been wondering why I don’t like this character, but you just put it out there. Besides that, he just seems to try too hard to fit in with the big boys and ends up sounding self-serving and over-anxious to please. A guy only a mother can love. Why Fer picked him is a mystery. Maybe he was the only guy in the neighborhood that didn’t steal tires? Sadly, his values are still sterling. He loves his mother, he loves his novia, he loves helping people, he worked hard to get his degree, started out at the bottom in a public defender’s job, made a lot of contacts that are helpful, landed a job with a prestigious law firm in Mexico City. What’s not to like? He’s not as bad as Johny, the Unctuous on Amar a Muerte, so it’s hard to label him thus, but there’s something, just something that is artificial.

You know, Anon, that Mama Susana is 100% behind Fer as a DIL. He’s going to have a hard time re-introducing Tatiana. As much as I dislke the character, now that you’ve made your statement, I’m curious to see how it all plays out. Hopefully, there won’t be a season III.

...That is, a Season III with Juanito.

I agree, Anita, that Juan has the values that his mama raised him with, but his upward mobility in his career has started eroding them bit by bit. And he is totally clueless that this is happening. His tunnel vision only allows him to see what HE has decided is best for his loved ones. He's convinced only he can decide what they need and want. Both Susana and Fer love their neighborhood and their neighbors. They are both generous, kind and helpful when needed. They both argued that they didn't want to move, but did he listen? Not even a little bit. He's been looking for the "perfect house in the perfect area." He totally dismissed their arguments with a "Pshhh, you're only women, you don't know what you want" attitude. And again, doesn't even realize it.

And yes, he's far removed from AAM's Unctious Johnny. Lol. But I'll worry if he starts wearing those "I -can't -breath -but-I-think-I-look-cool" tight, contrasting collar shirts!

Anon 5:35

Great job, Anita.

I disagree with the comments about Juan. He was being realistic about what he could do about Fernanda's situation. He did his homework and knew that her omission to register the app would be a problem. It's Alan and Damian who compounded that problem with their attitudes and short-sightedness. This has made Fernanda behave like a whiny little girl in front of them instead of telling the court that the settlement was insufficient.

The $4K US that this came to may go farther in Mexico than here, but she deserved much more. She should have talked to Juan and demanded triple that money in order to get double or double and a half, then decided that this was a lesson that she wouldn't have to learn again. BTW, this was only 10% of Juan's first paycheck at Vega so he probably should have researched payscales in tech first.

One can't fault Juan for wanting to provide a better home for his mother and his future wife and family. His heart is in the right place and he's making that money for that purpose. He is not going to become another Carlos.

Now for Fanny...

She will have a devil of a time in court unless the judge decides that the grandparents' attitudes need to be addressed. Karin looks mature enough to be competent to testify in court (although I don't know what Mexican courts think of children as witnesses) and I think she can do so calmly. However, you correctly pointed out that Fanny and Janneth should have gotten married as soon as it was legal.

BTW, Karin's maturity is an interesting contrast to Federico and Natalia's lack of it.

UA--I meant no disparagement regarding Juan's ability as a lawyer. Yes, he did do his best to get the best for Fer. It was an uphill fight against the laws regarding intellectual property. It was probably Fer who put too much faith in his abilities to "change" the law in her favor and felt he had failed her, thus making him feel like a failure. Still, the settlement was far too small for what she had accomplished, as Damian smugly pointed out to Alan.

As for moving to a "better" neighborhood--Juan DIDN'T listen to Fer or Susana. If they had sat down to talk, perhaps they could have come to some compromise about their physical safety, instead of making a one-sided decision. Perhaps Juan should have thought twice about bringing in a brand new car to the neighborhood and parking it on a street, albeit in front of his house, and expecting ALL the neighbors to respect its presence. Maybe he should have checked out automotive crime in his neighborhood first and gone ahead and found a nearby parking garage.

Furthermore, was this the first and only car in the neighborhood? From what I recall, the scene showed only his car up on blocks. Had he never noticed his own surroundings before? He's a public defender. He should have been familiar with petty crime. Aack. I'm just putting too much thought into this. Never mind.

Last note: In Uruguay, growing up, hardly anyone kept cars on the street. Apartment buildings had underground garages and homes had garages or fenced in areas. When I went back to visit not so long ago, it was still the same. My friends still parked their cars in the building's garage. Those on the street took their chances, although most were parked for daytime business and left after work.

Great recap Anita.

There may have been less heart ache if
Someone else had taken that case and
Jaun could have consulted. But I just wonder if jaun let his emotions get in
The way. That's why it's not good for
Doctors to treat themselves & lawyers to be their own clients. He was just
To emotionally involved. And that on top of her not getting a patent on it
Just added to the aggravation. Did he
(Jaun) even know she created this app?
Or maybe they didn't really tell each
Every thing about their separate life.
Omg, your right Anita over thinking,
Not good. They'll work it out. But jaun is in trouble with the blond over grateful octopus. He is just too nice for his on good.

I don't blame paula, take his butt to court. Alicia knew he was a jerk? She
Should have warned her friend. And why
Hasn't he come back yet? And He probly never planned to. I hppe alicia's not in on it with him. That would mean she
Gone all lifetime on Paula. Jealous of
Her and all she has,so she and gilbert
Cooked up a scam. Just guessing. But what if?

Send those over grown toddlers back to
The land of duddly do-right.

Thanks Anita

Excellent, Nina. I hadn't thought about Dudley Do-Right in ages. Some of those cartoons are on Youtube. The theme song parodies a Rossini overture.

Juan knew Fernanda created the app but intellectual property law is not his area of expertise. He should have had Gustavo handle the case.

I don't see Alicia being Machiavellian in the way you described. I think she isn't much above a simpleton or she wouldn't be married to Gilberto in the first place.

“Bobby and Vicky have been trapped in the elevator since Wednesday night." Snort! If she doesn't kiss you after 48 hours, Bobby, just give up already.

Great recap, Anita! I enjoyed every minute.
