Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Jueves 6/6/19 Episode 59: Some Justice

Scenes combined where it made sense to do so.

Mexico City: Carlos and Nancy continued speculating on who could have attacked Rocio. She mentioned that Rocio had a lover but Rocio had said nothing about him in the hospital. Nancy wondered whether either of the children did it in self-defense but Carlos doubted this. She then carefully opened a drawer where they found multiple prescription bottles with her name on them. They were all anti-depressants. They then found a psychiatrist's business card, closed the drawer, and left to follow this lead.

Sofia and Camila looked at old photos, per Marcela's recommendation. Camila said she felt normal, but Sofia clearly had concerns.

Los Angeles: The Justice Team ate at a rooftop restaurant while working on the case. Adrián finally looked at his watch and said he was going to bed. Victoria agreed, but Roberto insisted on staying up to check out one more thing. They left him alone at the table with the books.

Mexico City: El Ciego was on the phone threatening someone with death if all his merchandise didn't arrive. When he ended the call he told his goons that it would be arriving along a different route. El Chivo asked where and El Ciego would not tell him... yet. El Cuervo took this to mean that he didn't trust them. He said “Yes; that's how it is in this business.” He would send them alone later. He then took out his phone.

Los Cabos, Baja California: A couple – Fabián and Lorenza Torres – and a secretary had a discussion about an event scheduled very shortly that involved the governor and some major corporate bigwigs. There was a notary waiting to see him. They went to another office where the notary presented a court order for a DNA test to demonstrate paternity of a minor child named Antonio Morales Ruíz. Fabián looked genuinely confused. The order was demanded by the child's mother, Ana Morales Ruíz, to prove that he was the father of her child. Lorenza looked and sounded irritated. Fabián told the notary this was a mistake. The lawyer left and Lorenza lost it. She accused her husband of cheating on her, slapped him, and threw the relevant insults at him.

Los Angeles: In the courthouse everyone was taking their seats except Roberto, who was not answering his cell. The jury filed in. It was an equal number of men and women. The judge entered and took her seat as she told everyone they could be seated. The doors were closed. Olson was talking to his lawyer. The judge told the court that this was the family of Ramón Chávez vs. Officer Clint Olson. Adrián made the opening statement that this was a civil matter because the defendant violated the deceased's civil rights. He pointed out that the deceased was a legal resident. He called Erick as his first witness. He testified as to events. Also that neither he nor Ramón had a gun. Adrián showed a photo of the body bag to the jury, asking them “Was he shot for his accent or the color of his skin? No further questions.”

The defense attorney declined to cross-examine, accusing Adrián of presenting a lie. She addressed the jury, saying that her client's actions were questionable but not criminal. The dashboard cam video was shown. She called his partner, Officer Donovan. He testified that he and Olson had been partners for five years and that he had always been calm and followed protocols. This situation had never happened before. She asked whether Ramón had been armed. He answered that he moved his arm when told to freeze. She then said “So your partner was trying to protect his life?” Adrián objected and she rephrased. “In a similar process, what are the steps you take?” He said that they had the right to act before a suspect tries to do harm. With a self-satisfied smile she said “No further questions.” Adrián cross-examined, asking whether Donovan's partner was a racist. The defense objected, the judge overruled, and Adrián asked a different question, whether he had ever seen his partner behave this way before. He hesitated and Adrián could see that he was looking at the sheriff. “I'm afraid your boss doesn't have the answer.” The defense objected, the judge overruled, and told Donovan to answer the question. He said that he had never done anything like this before. Adrián asked if he was calm, why did he shoot and Donovan answered that they thought he had a gun because he moved his arm. Adrián said that was no justification. He then rested his case.

The defense gave its closing argument, saying that the Mexican lawyers had no idea about the affect of illegal immigrants on the US. How the police had to deal with gang situations and drug cartels and this officer's assumption that the deceased was armed. Adrián started by quoting the international treaty of 1969 that prohibited discrimination. That everyone in the US had the right to be protected, feel safe, and to be heard. That Ramón Chávez was not given that right. The judge said that the video was subjective [Of course; where was the sound?] Adrián said that had he been given that right, he would be alive. Roberto then entered with a file. Two security guards tried to stop him but Adrián got in between and said he was a member of his team. The judge allowed it. Adrián asked for a minute. Roberto had gotten the actual report which did not reflect what had been submitted and pointed to the relevant section of the penal code.

Los Cabos, Baja California: The Torres continued to argue. He claimed he had never boinked the accuser. He knew her; she had been a model in their ad campaign. She might be trying to get money out of him. Lorenza wasn't buying it. He told her he would get the DNA test to prove it. She told him that if it comes back positive he loses everything, including their daughter. He said this was a lie and he didn't know why this was happening.

Los Angeles: Olson was called to the stand. Adrián showed him the report and asked whether that was the report he wrote on the day. He said it was. Adrián pointed out that it was not the same narrative that had been submitted in evidence. That report said that he felt threatened. That was a violation of Statute 118.1. He read the statute out loud. Before he could finish Olson yelled to stop. The judge told Adrián to keep reading. He didn't quite finish it, but said that it was a crime for a cop to file a false report which Olson did because he knew he was guilty of murder. The defense protested, saying that her client made a mistake but that “these Mexican lawyers” only wanted to see him in jail. The judge sent the jury to deliberate. Adrián thanked Roberto and Victoria asked him how he got the correct transcript. He said “I have my methods, and they're all legal.” The sheriff walked over in a quien es muy macho manner and Adrián folded his arms and looked down on him. He backed off.

Mexico City: Sofia came back to the office and spoke to Alonso to say she was back in the office.

Carlos and Nancy talked to the psychiatrist who explained that he had prescribed the anti-depressants and anti-psychotic meds. They had been necessary. He also said that Rocio had no problem with her children but major problems with her husband.

Los Angeles: The jury found Olson not guilty of murder but guilty of filing a false report. The judge remanded him for this crime and said he would be held for sentencing. He cried out “I can't go to jail. Do you know what they do to cops in jail?” as the guards dragged him out. The judge rapped for order. The sheriff said to be calm and he would take care of this. He then looked at Adrián and told him he was making a mistake. Adrián told him to have a nice day.

Mexico City: The psychiatrist said that violent behavior in depressives was rare, as they were more inclined toward suicide. Nancy asked if he could provide some more information so they could make their case. He agreed to.

Los Angeles: The Vega team was not entirely satisfied with the result because the sentence was insufficient but it was a beginning. Adrián had previous experience with violent cases in multiple other states; this was not unique. He thanked Roberto for his help. Victoria asked how Roberto got the information and his answer was “Un caballero no tiene memoria.”

Mexico City: Fabián Torres called Alonso and explained his problem; he is apparently a corporate client. Alonso told him to send the documents and take the test. He would send a lawyer to him.

Sofia went to Ricardo's office to find Lorena there. She said she would be back at the firm. Ricardo handed her the case files he and Lorena had just worked on.

Los Angeles: As they left the Mexican Consulate Carmen thanked the lawyers for what they did for her family. She decided to get some rest and suggested they go and celebrate.

Mexico City: Alonso gave the Torres case to Ricardo and decided that Sofia would assist him. That meant a few days in Los Cabos, which Sofia didn't mind at all, despite feeling a little guilty about leaving Camila.

Carlos visited Quiróz to talk about the murder of the children. He gave Quiróz his theory of the crime, which Quiróz said was hard to believe (That a mother would kill her own children). However, there was no other suspect.

Los Angeles: The Vega lawyers celebrated at another rooftop bar, congratulating each other but still lamenting that with all the evidence they didn't get a guilty verdict on murder.

“Un caballero no tiene memoria"! I'm loving that. Unfortunately, I don't think Vicky will...

Thanks, UA. I noticed that Vicky let Bobby hug her for longer periods this time, though she did quite a bit of hand-holding with Adrian.

What is it about the costume department? Did they run out of suit jackets and coats that fit Adrian better, or is it to contrast how his sartorial knowledge compares to Bobby's?

Fairly predictable episode. I hope you took it easy, UA. I'll be on recap duty tonight. OK, NOW to read the recap.

Wow! Awesome attorneys! They get a cop convicted of something (falsifying a report) that he wasn't even charged with! Yay, Bufete Vega - courtroom magicians! (Tongue firmly in cheek. Lol)

Anon at 2:25--That was Telenovelaland magic.

Can someone identify Fabian Torres for me? Is it Jorge Poza (from HDLS) or his look-alike.

This case is going to be interesting. I like how now, when presented, the cases are not always obvious for us analyzers. There are two sides to the story and it could go either way.

I'm just as interested in the Daniel-Rocio case, even if it did go to Ibarra y Paez.

U have a feeling that Rocio is going to be represented by the Vega group.

I have a feeling ... NOT U! Well, maybe you too.

Thanks, Urban.

The psych's answers do make it sound doubtful that the mother did it. And her grief seems more real to me. The father seems more angry, at the mother and Alan, than grief-stricken.

Anon at 2:50--Actually I hadn't thought of that at all. It'll most likely happen if she's charged with the murder of her children and self-infliction of knife wound. Was there a knife found next to her body or not? This would be significant. Or did Televisa leave it out? Ooopsie or deliberate omission?

Personally, I think it is a poor place to keep opiates/barbituates in an open drawer in the living room--along with the psychiatrist's contact information accessible to children and lawyers. They DID have an upstairs--we saw the boys coming down the stairs. Presumably she was living alone by then and had her own bathroom. Tsk, Tsk, another Telvisa Ooopsie or deliberately planted?

UA: I enjoyed your analysis & full-detailed recap. I was bummed out there was a Not Guilty verdict in the Torres case.

What bothered me was the defense attorney referring to Team Justice as "these Mexican lawyers". The Pete Wilson Playbook alive & well ?

Anita: Looks like we might be seeing Sofia hitting the sheets with Ricardo soon.

Anon: I would've been satisfied with a Guilty verdict though. But 1 out of 2 isn't quite that bad.

Interesting set of cases UA. I initially thought the mother killed the children but the situation is becoming rather murky now.

Loved this:
and threw the relevant insults at him.

I can just imagine.

Thanks for a fine recap as always.

Thanks, guys. Since I can't post from my smartphone I was wondering who would be the first to comment on that awful coat on Adrian, who is normally very elegant. Good points also about the other stuff.

Now for my issues with this...

Medea: I failed to mention it in the recap, but Nancy must have read a crime scene report indicating that there were scissors found at the scene; she mentioned it. They would not have been there for her visit because if they were covered in blood they would be in the forensic lab. Also, we did not see how much blood had been spilled and the bandage on Rocio's throat doesn't look like it's concealing anything really serious.

Her psychiatrist said that violence among depressives was rare, not unknown. There was also a lack of detail over what she and Daniel were fighting about. We also know nothing about her lover. Also, Rocio may have told her shrink a big bouquet of lies.

Human Rights Violator: Why was there no sound on the dashboard cam video? Shouldn't there have been a microphone on the outside of the car to catch what was said? If so, wouldn't someone in that courtroom have been suspicious? Also there was no detail during the trial about how far away Olson was when he shot Ramon and I don't remember where the bullet landed.

Cops who go to prison end up near the bottom of the food chain.

That is Jorge Poza as Fabian. I can't identify the actress who is playing Lorenza, though. This case will be very interesting.

UA--I thought Lorenza was Marisol Olmos. Look closely at her lips.

I just checked IMDb and you are right. Jade Fraser is listed as Rocio and I didn't recognize her.

Nobody from Ibarra & Paez can defend her and nobody from Vega would defend her.

Thank you UA. These cases are getting
Harder and harder. And creepy. That couple with the murdered children, how
Sick is That? They are screwed up and the kids suffer. That's hard. And that cop lying about murdering the Mexican gentleman who was a us citizen, hard stuff to see.
But they seem to be incorporating topics from the news, and other things
In real life on this show.

The two next cases, creep shows for sure. Well one of them anyway.

Gruesome stuff US. Thanks.

"Gruesome stuff UA", not US.
