Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Viernes 5/31/19, Episode 55: Adrián and Roberto are Paired Up

*It’s not what you think. They are going to work a new case together.

*Ric and Sofia bring Camila home. Camila is very embarrassed over the whole episode of being detained for appearing nude in the streets near her house (As I recall, she was wearing a towel, so it wasn’t exactly indecent exposure. The police should have just taken her home and called her daughter.) She leaves to take a bath and get out of borrowed clothes. Ric gives Sofia a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving, but she grabs his hand and holds him back. She thanks him for being there for her. She’s very upset over what is happening with her mother. Ric says medicine has advanced and is sure she can be helped. Later, Sofia brings her mother tea. Camila says she doesn’t understand what is happening to her. She has trouble remembering things—like not knowing how to open the door with her keys. Sofia assures her that once they see a doctor they’ll know more. Camila doesn’t want to see a doctor. She’s afraid it will be something serious and won’t be able to get well. Sofia assures her everything will be alright.

*Adrian returns to the bar scene after escorting Vicky out. Bobby quizzes Addie about his family. He asks if he’s attached to anyone. Addie answers no, not yet. (Just what Bobby didn’t want to hear.)  Lorena is with Manuel physically, but is not really WITH Manuel. He apologizes for his earlier remarks to her. He was just trying to start a conversation. Lore reminds him there were many things they could have talked about, just not who she likes. She says she’s dedicated to her work and after he gets his degree and starts working, he’ll know what she’s talking about. (Points deducted from her scorecard for that answer.) After she and Addie leave, Manuel decides to ask Bobby for advice on how to get Lore to notice him. She is only interested in the important attorneys. His advice wasn’t very clear, even without a title, he had to be himself, or something like that.

*Susana is doing the last of the packing. Juan says they should be ready to move tomorrow or the next day. She brings out some mementos. She wishes his dad could have been here to see him grow up. He doesn’t want her to be sad.

Next Day

*Jaime and Paula are on their way to the hearing regarding Gilberto defrauding Paula. He tells her to see Gil and Alicia objectively. They are persons who tried to con her. Then they run into Alicia and her attorney. She confronts Paula and Jaime and directs her venom at Paula. She says Paula went too far. Paula says she should say that to her husband.

*At the hearing, the bank representative, Sr. Salazar, explains how Sr. Valderos got a loan from them, but never made a single payment. When the bank tried to reach him by phone, he never answered, so they had no choice but to move to seize the security he’d put up to back the loan. Gilberto’s attorney claims he’s a victim of Jaime’s influence and power, able to accuse him of fraud and having Gil treated as a common criminal. Jaime lays out the case of fraud against Gilberto. Jaime is convinced Gil never had any intention of paying the loan back. He convinced Paula in a moment of great stress that he could help her earn back the money his daughter owed that she used to negotiate Jaime’s release by the kidnappers. Gil’s attorney insists that Gil acted in good faith. He reminds his audience that investments don’t always work out. Jaime then reminds Gil’s attorney that Gil never replied to his daughter when she tried to reach him, so the loan kept increasing.

*Salazar says the loan was for 7 million pesos at 16% per annum interest. They want restitution. Gil’s attorney says Gil is willing to pay half if Paula will pay the other half. Paul just sits there stunned. Jaime says no way. Paula admits to the judge that she didn’t really know what she was signing. She thought she was helping her daughter. When her daughter went over the contract and wanted to rectify it, it was too late. Gil didn't return her calls. The bank rep says they are willing to forgo the interest, but they want the entire loan paid. Jaime apprises the court and Gil’s attorney that there is a property in Sr. Valderos name. He recommends it be liquidated to pay restitution and let the bank go after that property instead of Paula’s. Alicia jumps up and screams that is HER house. The judge tells her to sit down. Gil shrugs his shoulders.

*The judge hands down his decision. Gil won’t be held for fraud, but sentenced to two years in prison for skipping out on his loan contract. Alicia goes all apoplectic. She accuses Paula of always having everything she ever wanted. She yells that she hates her and turns on her heels and leaves the room.

*The lovely Michelle is back to see Carlos. Nancy’s twin headlights arrive before the rest of her. (Thanks, Ivana of StuD for that visual.) She “graciously” announces that Carlos hasn’t arrived yet, but she’s one of Carlos’ lawyers and would be happy to take any documents she has for him and hand them over. Michelle “graciously” prefers to wait. Ooops, Carlos shows up right then and greets Michelle very warmly, ushering her into his office as Nancy watches.

*Michelle chit-chats with Carlos for a bit. She mentions having lived in L.A. for a couple of months, then moving to San Antonio, where she met the guy who became her associate. Now she’s unsure whether she really wants to continue the partnership and asks Carlos’ advice. He suggests she launch her business on her own. He has reason to recommend it. (As in associates can make life uncomfortable, especially when it’s family and his cousin’s mother had all the money when he had none.) She says she’ll think about it and get back to him.

*A very hysterical woman gets off the elevator and runs right into Carmen’s arms. It’s her SIL, Eugenia, and she cries as she tells how her son has just been killed by gringo police. She needs help. She has no way of bringing him home. She’s sure that this was an injustice. She doesn’t know what happened, other than what Ramon’s buddy told her. Carmen calms her down. She tells her the attorneys here are very good. Eugenia says she has no money. Carmen assures her that Alonso has a big heart.

*Ric meets with Bobby and tells him about the incident with Sofia’s mother. Depending on the diagnosis, they’ll come ask for a favor from Bobby’s dad, Nick. Bobby quickly changes the subject. He’s been talking to Gus about Ric wanting to find some connection between Carlos and Alejandra’s death. Por supuesto there’s got to be a connection, Ric insists. Why was Carlos at the restaurant and how odd Ale looked when she saw him. Then there was the hospital visit. Ale was perfectly ok and after Carlos saw her she went into convulsions. Bobby assures him he will help, but it shouldn’t cloud his thinking. He should be concentrating on other cases. He’s too close to this one. Ric leaves to keep on it.

*Carmen brings Eugenia to Bobby. She’s still hysterical, but at least she’s getting most of the story out to Bobby. She wants those people to pay for what they did to her son. Bobby says Adrián will have to handle the case because they have to file charges in L.A., but he will be there to back up Adrián. He assures her that Adrián is an excellent attorney.

*Jaime and Paula run into Alicia again, outside the building. Alicia excoriates them for what they did. Because of her, she’s losing her house. Jaime says Gil got himself into this mess. Alicia insists that it’s Paula’s fault for filing charges. She accuses Jaime of abuse of power since Jaime knows all the judges. She’ll never forgive Paula. After she leaves them, the two talk about the confrontation. Jaime says give her time. She will probably see that Gil was guilty. At least Paula’s house is safe. He tells her she’s not alone. He’ll always be there for her. (Do we know WHY they ever got divorced? They get along altogether too well.)

*Everything at Juan and Susana’s is packed up. He tells his mother he has to go out for a bit. He hopes she won’t be sad. It’s the beginning of a new life for them. They hug. He leaves. (Now, what on earth can possibly happen, either while he’s out or she’s in. And what about Fernanda? Susana and she were very close, won’t we get to see her say goodbye?)

*Vicky and Addie are tête-a-tête in her office, going over her preparation for licensing in the U.S. She thinks she’s almost ready. He’s happy about it. Addie is leaning in to her when Bobby barges in with Eugenia and Carmen in tow. Of course they will help clear up this tragedy. Vicky, Bobby and Addie discuss the case. Vicky says the legal system in the U.S. protects the police. She thinks Bobby and Addie should be the ones who work on the case together. The two men look at each other. Addie says that’s not a problem. They will need to talk to Daniel to determine whether this could be a matter of police abuse.

*Camila is being given some simple cognitive tests by a kindly doctor. She makes some mistakes. He says that they must do some more tests. Sofia wants an immediate diagnosis. He says it could be Alzheimer’s. Camila gets agitated. The doc says they’ll be able to help her and sustain her quality of life. Cam doesn’t want the tests. As they wait for the tests, Cam says she doesn’t want this disease. Sofia says there are treatments. Cam cries that she doesn’t want to forget all the wonderful memories she has of Sofia growing up and life with her husband. A nurse calls her for her tests. Sofia stays behind and can’t hold back the tears.

Yay! Carmen gets a backstory! Sort of. I really like that actress, but they don't give her enough to do.

Anita, I laughed when you deducted points from Lorena's scorecard for getting snooty with Manuel. Should everyone have a scorecard? Frankly, they're all pretty low-performing at this point -- except Paula, who has really come into her own since she started suffering. I guess I'll pull up a tiny chair at a tiny table on the tiny patio outside the tiny house in Paula's backyard and pour myself a thimbleful of tea.

And we NEVER heard nada, zilch from Gilberto...In court, his face just grimaced and he shook his head..Come on, man...say something..defend yourself. Oops he knows he’s guilty...and his wife just spews venom. Ps I’m liking Michele clothes....but that black short skirt......

Loved your snarky title/intro..."Adrian and Roberto are Paired Up"...no, not that way... and also this:

*The lovely Michelle is back to see Carlos. Nancy’s twin headlights arrive before the rest of her. (Thanks, Ivana of StuD for that visual.)

Yes, Nancy's figure continues to amaze, as well as her "duck lips" that Blue Lass noted once. Then there's Michelle with the 10-mile-long legs. Kirby really should be watching this one.

Honestly, I can hardly even read about Alicia and Gilberto's flim-flam without my blood pressure rocketing...much less watch and listen to it! Yegods people! And to my discredit, I also just don't like the actress playing Alicia. I don't like the way she looks, sounds, or her one name professional moniker--Polly. That is just totally prejudiced and unkind. But I thought I'd better confess it. Because perhaps this is influencing my interpretation of events. Nah...these two characters are both totally in the wrong. Hopefully they will disappear from the story forever.

And like you, Anita, I'm secretly hoping "mom and dad", Paula and Jaime, get back together. I suspect, from the way her character was portrayed in the past, that Paula was a gal who needed a good time and lots of attention. Jaime was just too busy with career, and too serious, to keep her happy and satisfied. But one's perspective has a way of changing over the years. Especially since none of her other marriages or amorios have worked out. And once those hormones start flagging, solid companionship and loyalty are suddenly more appealing.

Well enough of that philosophizing. Thanks for a fun, interesting recap.

PS I can't see Juan's mother being happy in the new, shiny, sterile home. Nor can I see her having much fun with her possible neighbors. Years ago, when we were living in Philadelphia, the long-time Italian (in origin) mayor moved out of his cozy neighborhood home into fancy new digs in the suburbs. His ego was happy with the palatial new place. His wife was not. She missed her old neighborhood, the shops and shopkeepers she all knew within walking distance, the friendships dating back decades. I think that's how it's going to be for Juan's mamita.

JudyB, Lol..as I was writing about Michelles’s short short dress, I, too, thought of Kirby! A lot of woof woofs
he’d be helping. Where art thou , Kirby? Hopefully he’s fine...

These two gals are both woof-worthy, Anonymous, and not averse to showing the good china.

I'm sure Kirby is fine...just enjoying his boat, the ocean and the hot, humid Florida weather. Somebody has to.

Good comments, all. See Blue? We might need a slightly bigger Patio table, but tiny chairs. Maybe we can move up from a thimble to a demitasse?

I'm sorry they are going to make the gringo police the fall-guys in this story. I wish instead the guys had seen that driverless 18-wheeler parked on the side of the road and pulled over to see if they could help and found it loaded with trapped undocumented Central Americans fleeing violence and ICE shows up instead of the police. Oh, we've had at least two stories with that theme--El Talisman and Vino El Amor. Ok, Been There, Done That. ---NEXT!

You know what I'm getting tired of? And it has nothing to do with the story. It's female leads and others having to wear hair extensions. In close ups, you see how they've twisted the real hair around to hide the extension. True, they do a good job matching colors (or they dye the actor's hair to match the extension, what do I know). Anyway too many of them are being given this treatment. Why not just come out an admit that hair styles are shorter these days.

Gracias, Anita.

Polly (Alicia) was a child star and those tend to go only by their first names. They also continue to do so in their adult careers (I don't get that). No wonder I think of Baby Jane Hudson when I see her.

Paula doesn't realize it yet but she is better off without this false friend. Gilberto was silent in the court because he knew what he had done was criminal. Alicia showed herself to have as little class as she looks.

Loved the line about Nancy's headlights. I nominate that for a sidebar.

Roberto isn't doing himself any good at this point. He should let Victoria dump Adrian first. Adrian may be serious about her but Victoria won't be serious about him; she uses men the way Roberto uses women.

Manuel is not mature enough for Lorena, who isn't mature enough for Ricardo.

More later.

Well, not to be a Crankypants, but why does Manuel think he's entitled to Lorena and just needs some hot Roberto tips to land her? Plus, honestly, he has the most boring, characterless face I've ever seen. But also agree that Ricardo is too old for her. Plus Sofia seems to be staking a serious claim there anyway. Such a looooooong look, really long, between her and Ricardo after they got her mama home.

Thank you Anita, this was a rather sad
Episode. Alzhiemers is a very cruel sickness, that not only robs the one
That has it it robs the family. Sofia
Needs to talk to someone who has some
Experience with this. She is in for a very shocking and sad future.

The nerve of some people. Alicia is a
Piece of work. She really has shown her true colors. Gil is a crook and so
Is she. She don't want to loose her house but it's ok for Paula to loose hers. See,she's always been jealous of Paula. Everyone that smiles in your face ain't your friend. Lourdes better
Open her eyes.

I like Jaime. Is he husband #1 or #4?
Out of all her hubbys he's my favorite
Husband. Why Did they brake up? They'r
Perfect together.
Call Me crazy but I'm still hoping that ale is still alive, in a coma being kept Till she wakes up. Cuz she
Got vital Intel on the El C. Or it's
Just wishful thinking on my part. Well
Stranger things have happened.

Ricardo's on to something he just don't know what he's on too. But ohh boy wait til he finds out. Ale was ok
Til Carlos went in there to see her. I
Wish Jaime had refused, but he was tryin to Nice and compassionate to a killer.

I hope Robby and Adrian can get justice for that young man the popo
Killed. Sinceless.

Hey what if Adrian is gay? He's looking To be attached to someone soon
What if it's a guy? A gay guy?

Thanks, Anita. Great title. Roberto and Adrian should be good together. They'll compete with each other but it'll be good for the client.

Too many tears in this show. Thank goodness for no-tears Nancy and Michelle.

Nina--So far Adrian has not sent out any gay vibes for us to pick up on, especially if there aren't any potential interests available at Vega. We really don't know much about how these guys spend their evenings, in whose company. We only see them getting together when Bobby calls for a trip to his favorite watering hole. What we have seen is an intense interest in Vicky, who has been keeping him at least cheeks-length.

We'd have to go back to the early episodes in Season I to get any info on Jaime and Paula's break-up. All I can recall is her boasting to Lourdes and Alicia that she's been married and divorced and was then in another relationship (of whom we never saw any evidence).

Niecie--Nancy and Michelle are now our little bit of comic relief.

I also don't think Adrian is gay but rather someone who had to show the cock of the walk that there was competition he would need to worry about.

BTW, does anyone know whether houses and offices in Mexico really don't have any windows facing the street? This baffles me.
