Por Amar Sin Ley, Season 2 Jueves 7/11/19 Episode 80: Honesty

Scenes combined where it made sense to do so.

Mexico City: Debbie insisted on waiting for Adrián in reception rather than accept Roberto's lunch invitation.

At that same moment Adrián was explaining to Victoria that when he had finished his studies in Philadelphia he had received an irresistible job offer. However, his visa was about to expire and his best friend – Debbie – offered the marital solution. He wasn't proud of having done this but it was the only solution at the time.
While he didn't make it sound like an interrogation Roberto interrogated Debbie, who revealed that she had been married to Adrián for five years. “That'a long time,” he said. “No, for me it's passed very quickly,” she said, before telling him that if he wanted to go to lunch not to worry about her. He asked Carmen to see to her comfort and made a polite exit.

Adrián continued, telling Victoria that he was embarrased at having done something illegal and taken this length of time to come clean about it. He was telling her now because Debbie's long-term boyfriend, Mike, wanted to marry her so she contacted him to arrange the divorce. Victoria didn't look or sound pleased at this. Adrián went on to explain that Mike knew all about it and was okay with it, as they had all been at school together. [Wait; does that mean that Adrián went to law school in the US? Unless his family is wealthy he must have a mountain of debt.] He then looked at his watch and said that she would be arriving at the office and he wanted Victoria to meet her. Victoria called the waiter and requested the check. Her manner was indifferent to curt.

Carlos went to the prison infirmary to see Alan. He stared at him as the doctor explained that Alan had sustained many blows to the head and had internal bleeding in the rest of his body. Carlos asked whether he is expected to live and the doctor said that it will take some time to determine that. Carlos' expression did not change.

Javier explained to Alonso that there was no proof regarding the situation and the investigation is likely to end. Their only chance would be for him to investigate on his own and file the charges himself when he found something.

Herrera spoke to Nancy to tell her that the investigation was closed because of lack of evidence. He was expecting his payment. She was happy with this news.

Since he obviously was a friend or the lawyer of her father, Maite called Alonso about the file she took away from the meeting with her brothers. She didn't entirely understand some of the documents which concerned them acting on her behalf and consolidation of some of their father's business interests. They arranged to meet.

Carlos returned to his office in a bad mood, which he took out on his secretary. She was telling him that there were clients wanting to talk to him and what was she to do. He saw a folder on his desk with the firm name on it and became enraged. He removed the contents and tore it in half in front of her. He did this with several others and then demanded that she get him an appointment with a notary to change the name of the firm. Alan was out and the firm was going back to being solely in his name. She said that would mean having all the stationery and business cards and tax things changed. He just yelled at her to do it. She left his office. Opposite his door there was a conference room where the current name was on the presentation screen. He yelled at her to close the door.

Sonia went to see Alan and was shocked at his injuries. The doctor told her that it had been a long time since he had a patient with injuries this serious. She asked if this was a normal occurance there and he said “Disgracefully, yes.” He explained Alan's injuries and that they would shortly know his prognosis. It could involve transferring him to a hospital. They didn't know who had done this but it was usually internal conflict. Sonia, however, was sure that this had an outside cause. She requested to be updated as to Alan's condition, then left.

Nancy went in to see Carlos and saw that something had to be very wrong. He told her he had come from the prison and Alan's condition was very bad. She asked whether he had anything to do with it, which provoked his temper. He said that Alan knew too much and that there was no other solution. She asked whether he would live and Carlos said that there was no other solution. He told her that Alan's name would be off the business and he would be the only boss. He wanted all evidence of Alan purged from the firm. Nancy told him that the investigation into El Ciego was archived. That was a relief to him.

Juan went to see Tatiana about the file on Patricia's murder. She was shocked but he explained that they found her killer and he needed to get Pedro out of prison. Tatiana behaved as though having a panic attack when he told her that Alan was the real killer because she was the one whom he had boinked that night. She had not wanted any more reminders of her previous life. He could just as easily have killed her, she had been regarded as a suspect, etc. He told her she didn't have to worry; her life was different and it was because of her own efforts. Of course she gave him the credit for that, came out from behind the desk, and assaulted him with a kiss. He did manage to put on the brakes and get her to look for the file.

Adrián introduced Victoria and Debbie to each other. “So you are the famous Victoria? I've heard so much about you.” He had told her everything. Victoria managed to contain her feelings of awkwardness at this bizarre situation. Debbie explained that she had married Adrián so he could stay in the US because there was no other way to accomplish this, they were only good friends, and now she was engaged to the love of her life. She showed off her engagement ring and told her she hoped she could come to the wedding with Adrián. Victoria said “Why not?” and Debbie said to take good care of Adrián because he is a good guy. It was all quite civil. [One wonders what Victoria will say later after this meeting.]

Roberto vented to Ricardo, who was very surprised. He pointed out that Victoria was not interested in relationships. Roberto was determined to prevent Victoria from getting hurt. Ricardo told him that Victoria didn't need his protection and that he should stay out of this. She and Adrián needed to resolve this themselves. Carmen came to fetch Roberto for a meeting with Alonso.

Gustavo photographed the building where El Ciego's night watchman was killed, then made a call.

Probably an hour or two later Juan and Tatiana were out of the building and she was calmer in front of him, telling him that now it was really over. Her friend could rest in peace now that her real killer was discovered and she was glad of the decision to change her life. She gave him all the credit for this. The parking attendant asked whether the next car was his. He looked as said “I wish, but no.” It was an expensive two-seater which Tatiana was very impressed with. Its owner got in and drove off and she went on about Juan being much handsomer than the owner of the car. [This calls for an intervention. Roberto, he needs you yesterday.]

Alonso was assigning Maite Villegas' case to Roberto and Javier. Her father had been an old friend and he had owned the largest construction business in Monterey. He was certain that Maite's brothers were trying to cheat her out of her rightful share of the business. They were to prepare to go the following morning.

A few laughs later Victoria said she had to get back to work. A pleasant departing remark later she left Adrián's office, telling Debbie she would see her at the wedding. After she was out the door Debbie commented on how attractive and interesting Victoria was and Adrián told her he had to proceed carefully because of Victoria's past bad experiences. He was in love with her.

Later Roberto went to Victoria's office to warn her about Adrián. He was the one to be surprised because she told him that Adrián had told her and was honest with her, which he (Roberto) was incapable of. “Not all men are like you.” He insisted she tell him what this was about and she told him that this was not her information to impart. This did not put him off. He accused her of being afraid to be in love and that's why she's running away from him. He demanded to know what she felt for Adrián and she said she didn't know. He left, saying to tell him shen she knew.

Adrián signed the divorce papers and told Adrián he worked for a nice office; everyone there was nice to her. She also mentioned Roberto, and Adrián said he was a good fellow. He offered to drive her to the airport and they agreed on 6PM.

Gustavo was looking at the photos he took when Lorena came in. She told him she had looked at the photos of his family. She understood how he felt and she wanted to help. He asked why.

A bit later after working all day with Nancy Carlos was ready to call it a night. She opened his shirt and offered to “help him relax” and he said “Maybe another time”. She asked him what has happened and he said “Nothing; just going to see a client.” She realized it was Michelle and he said all he asks is to get the work done.

Lorena said she didn't understand his question [that she didn't want to answer]. He asked again and she said she admired his strength and willingness to go on. She wasn't sure she could do this if she had suffered that kind of loss. He told her that the one thing that kept him going was the eventuality of finding the killers and making them pay. She told him that he had other reasons to continue, all the other people who needed his help. She was doing this out of affection. She touched his hands and he might have realized then what this was all about. He went back to Stern Mode and told her that she was not to involve herself in anything this dangerous, then excused himself to get his work done. She looked disappointed as she left his office.

Victoria took some things off her bulletin board as she prepared to leave the office. Adrián came in hoping to see her for the evening but she told him she was very tired. He observed that when she said that something was bothering her. He said he wanted her to trust him again. He was there for her for whenever she needed him. She said she knew. Finally they walked out together. [Now this is stuck in neutral, I think.]

Gustavo told Ricardo what he had done and Ricardo reminded him of the danger. Gustavo said they still needed a connexion to Dorantes. Roberto came in, saying he couldn't understand Victoria. He laid out why and said that between that and the situation with his parents he needed a drink with his friends. They agreed.

Alonso and Lourdes dined with Jaime and Paula, who said that life would not be the same as before; she would learn to live with grief. A few sentences later Jaime took out his checkbook to pay back Alonso and Lourdes the money they had lent for the ransom. Jaime had paid Carlos back and now had finished paying back everything. They toasted the occasion.

Nancy was still at her desk at the office. She looked at Michelle's file.

Carlos was with Michelle, telling her about Alan. He wasn't sure what would happen with him. She commented on him having a great heart, which he replied that nobody had ever said this before. They kissed.

Sofia and Camila were having dinner and Sofia brought up the unresolved issue. Both began crying.

Fine job, Urban, you just keep rolling them out. Thank you.

So, Carlos hates Alan enough to have the office renamed, hopes now he dies because of what he knows, and looks awful in that brown suit.

So, Roberto gets an earful of "misunderstanding" a situation, which Debbie did not clarify. Did anyone ever tell him that an olive green shiny tie really doesn't go with a sky blue shirt, even if it has a white collar and a buttoned up tight vest?

So, bless my buttons, Adrian HAS a not so squeaky clean past, but overcomable. I'm still pulling for him. Vic needs someone who adores her and doesn't have a past like Bobby's, involving women.

Having known personally a couple who had a similar arrangement so he could get a green card and stay in the US, it's not that unusual. ICE (or whatever it was then, La Migra), is pretty suspicious of these marriages of undocumented persons with US citizens. They did home visits unannounced. In my friends' case, they were also friends--and lovers--though she wasn't interested in getting married at all. He was either going to be deported or had decided to move to Australia. They got married and stayed married for 3 years, living together (plus 2 years before getting married). The marriage crumbled when he up and moved to Spain to be with a girfriend he'd met on his job!!!!, giving up almost becoming an American citizen. Don't know what happened to them after that, but when he came back to liquidate his "assets," I bought his three year old car and I'm still driving it 16 years later.

Thanks, Urban. Great job.

Of course, Carlos should remove Alan's name from the firm, but I think he's in such a rage to do it quickly so he doesn't have to face the guilt of practically putting a hit out on his only family member.

Anita, glad you got a great car out of your friend's green card marriage deal!

Vicki can feel as safe with nice guy Adrian if she wants, but she knows deep inside she has no passion for him.

Have we seen any passion between Bobby and Vic? We know they had a little something at the beach near the end of PASL I. I thought Adrian and Vic had a pretty passionate kiss out there on the terrace in NYC. I guess we just have to wait and see.

I don't understand Gus. Here is an adorable child willing to help him and he just rebuffs her outright. He could have set her to making copies, looking up precedents in the law, typing up his notes, etc....oh, I guess that's what Carmen is for. Off that we've never seen any of the abogados with secretarias of their own. Does all that clerical stuff get done by gnomes at night?

I don't know that Carlos feels any sense of guilt. What he might be feeling is horror at what Alan's actions have led him to:

--- Being in the slammer led him to making a deal with the devil (El Ciego) to get him out
--- He used his foundation to launder El Ciego's dirty money
--- He got sucked into bailing out El Ciego's goons and representing them in court
--- To avoid being found out about any of the above he used Nancy to bribe others to alter a security video, get inside police information, and tamper with other evidence, thereby corrupting people working for law enforcement
--- Upon discovery of Alan being the killer and framing him for it, he asked El Ciego to get him roughed up

None of this will end well for him, even if El Gringo kills El Ciego in their turf war.

Removing Alan's name from the firm is the one logical thing he's done in all this. He will really lose it when he finds out that El Ciego effectively stole 15MM pesos from him.

About secretaries: Ever since computers have been on every office desk in the US secretaries are not so commonplace anymore except for people in the C suite and major department heads.

Adrian would be quite a catch for someone. If I recall correctly a hot-looking, fair-complexioned Spaniard is usually Upper Crust.

BTW, the actress who plays Debbie is his real-life SO.

All great points, Urban.

Even if Adrian is really from Spain (b. Barcelona), does he always have to talk like a Madrileno with a King Charles V royal court's accent? Thanks for the little tid-bit on Debbie.

I probably won't get a recap up until tomorrow (Saturday). I'm bushed from moving 25 lb. pieces of slate around to form another row of walkway in the garden. I'm afraid I'll be asleep by 10:30. See you all tomorrow.

Good recap. Troublesome episode. So it
Appears that Carlos has resolved I. Himself that killing Alan is the only way to protect himself cuz he knows to

. Speaking of over I keep hearing "grand finaly" when an episode ends.Is
The grand finaly comin Up?

Robby needs to leave Vicky alone and
Just take care of his problems with ma

Falls. Its her own fault.

What will be will be.

Jaun will probly be broke by the time its over. He don't know how to say NO!

Thank Urban. Happy weekend yall!

This season will have 91 episodes, like last season. The story points to there being a third season and the ratings seem to justify it. If that is the case, timing will probably be the same in terms of when it begins.

I am wondering whether the Madrileno accent is the television standard in Spain. It's been a long time since I was there on vacation. Maybe it's cultural, but I think lisps sound childish.
