I'm
Christopher Mason. The truth is a strange thing with varied appeal.
We all seem to value it but it is sometimes very inconvenient. Some
people can't face it, others deny it, and others delight in revealing
it... especially when it's ugly and shocking.
I'm
Candice DeLong. In my time with the FBI I've seen many people avoid
the truth like a plague. Criminals especially. And when those
criminals can hide behind respectable masks the truth becomes their
worst enemy.
Mexico
City: “Alan is innocent,”
Carlos told El Ciego. “Like you or me?” he asked. “Tell me
what is happening.” Carlos' face said he didn't want to.
Tatiana
went on about Juan upgrading his wardrobe to move up in his
profession. She began vamping him [along
with background music borrowed from Nancy].
He seemed to be enoying this.
This
young woman must have been watching telenovelas since her teens. She
must be thinking of herself as the late Edith Gonzales in Salomé.
Whatever Carlos told El Ciego he
appeared to be satisfied, but noted that the police were getting a
little too close to him (Carlos). Carlos told him not to worry and
his money would be taken care of. El Ciego then got up, finished his
drink, and said he was returning to his vacation. He wished him luck
about Alan. Carlos dropped the glass El Ciego had helped himself to,
not caring that it shattered.
At
breakfast Susanna asked about why Juan was out so late. She was not
pleased to hear that he had been out with Tatiana, whom she felt he
was spending too much time with and whom she considered to be a bad
influence. He finally told her that the relationship with Fernanda
was over because she
had decided she didn't want to be with him. She tried to argue the
point but he picked up his briefcase and went on his way.
Roberto
and Adrián were in the break room having their morning coffee.
Roberto tried to find out whether Adrian had taken Victoria on a date
only to hear that this has not happened yet due to their workloads.
Roberto commented on work/life balance and segued into asking Adrian
about his love life, such as whether there was someone in Spain.
Adrian answered that he was still a student when he left Spain.
Roberto tried once more, but Adrian excused himself to get to work.
Lorena continued to go on about
hoping to work with Gustavo again, wondering how to make that happen.
Manuel made a sort-of suggestion and she thanked him, but tried to
get him to promise not to tell anyone. He told her she should not
worry; she could count on him. She didn't notice that he looked even
more disappointed.
Manuel
has been friend-zoned, perhaps permanently.
Carlos and Nancy went to the
lockup. He was concerned about this. Nancy told him there was no
witness so they had nothing on Alan. She then tried to kiss him but
he stopped her. Alan was brought in, showing gratitude all over.
Nancy told him not to worry.
Sonia then entered the room.
If
looks could kill, she'd be guilty of a triple homicide.
El Gringo backed up the Goat at
gunpoint, accusing him of tipping El Ciego off. El Chivo denied
having done so, saying “I was with you the whole time.” The
henchman confirmed this by showing that he had possession of El
Chivo's cell phone.
Carlos' opening statement was an
accusation against the DA's office which had been out to get him.
Alonso called Sofia into his
office to enquire about her mother and to advise her to look into
settling her mother's legal situation now because there would come a
time when someone else would need to handle her finances, etc. She
had not thought of this until this point. Her mother was her only
relative and she was panicking at the thought of losing her. Alonso
told her that she needed to take advantage of her mother's remaining
lucidity and then volunteered to do the legal documents for her. He
tearfully explained that he had done this for his wife and he knew
how difficult it was.
Sofia
is learning the awful truth about her mother's condition. She is
fortunate to have people around her who will help, and an excellent
nurse. Some patients become missing persons cases.
Carlos went on about Sonia
wanting to keep up her conviction rate, wondering how many innocent
people she had sent to prison. She denied this. He went on to say
that any evidence she had against his client was circumstantial. He
was going to prove that the victim's death was accidental. Sonia
said that her job was to see that justice was done. She presented
the forensic report that indicated the extent of the fractures and
internal injuries, saying that these could not have been accidental.
She also stated that she had evidence that would tie Alan Paez to the
death. Carlos said that she would be unable to prove anything, as
Alan at been at his home that evening. He went so far as to accuse
Sonia of incompetence for choosing the first possible suspect.
Sonia showed the list of phone
calls between Alan and the victim on the day of the “accident.”
Carlos asked if he could question his client. Alan was sworn in. He
said under oath that the conversations were about a case that Téllez
needed help with. A fraud case which had put his life in danger.
Carlos asked about that and Alan said that Téllez had received death
threats and he felt that he could not handle a case of this
magnitude. Carlos asked if he had provided any details of the case
and Alan said that he had to spend most of their meeting time calming
him down, so he didn't know the specifics. Carlos had no further
questions. Sonia then asked why Téllez called his firm. Alan
answered that he was aware of their reputation and felt that they
could handle such a case. He had always worked alone. She asked
whether he knew where the death threats came from and he said, “No,
he never told me.” Sonia reminded him that he was under oath. She
then asked why there were dents on his car. Carlos rose to ask what
kind. She opened the report and said that the car was brought in
hours after the incident. Carlos claimed that was a coincidence and
that the dents were from normal use. Sonia pointed out that the
dents were on the rear bumpers. Carlos said that the forensic report
described injuries incurred by being hit by a car. That happens from
the front end, not the back. The judge looked up toward Alan.
Surely
Carlos was reaching at this time. How many times have cars been
rear-ended? Why would it be such a stretch of the imagination to
think that such a move wouldn't be made to kill?
Javier was reading a news story
about El Gringo when Gustavo came in with the same one. Javier said
that this looked like a turf war. Javier was sure that this would
bring very quick police attention.
Carlos
used his favorite word of the day (circumstantial) and said that
proving a homicide required three things: proving that the accused
was at the scene, that he had a motive, and demonstrating the means
by which the crime was committed. He said that none of these things
had been proven. Sonia then produced Téllez' cell phone and said
they had accessed the voice mail box. She took out a disc and handed
it to the clerk to play it. Carlos asked Nancy why she didn't know
this, but she didn't have a chance to answer. The first message was
a threat about the amount of money, but the second was the threat to
tell Carlos that Alan was Patricia's killer if he didn't come up with
the amount demanded. Alan started protesting that this was not true.
Carlos remained silent long enough to hear Sonia say that Alan was
Patricia Linares' killer and he had allowed Carlos to be incriminated
and remain in jail over it. This was his motive for killing Téllez.
Alan shouted back that this was a lie.
Carlos lost his cool, called
him a murderer, and went over to the cell window. He said he would
kill him with his bare hands. The judge rapped for order but he most
likely didn't hear it. Nancy requested a recess. Sonia insisted
that the proceedings continue. Nancy said that the law insisted that
a defendant have a proper defense of which Carlos was not capable at
this time. The judge agreed and called a recess.
It
looked as though Carlos saw all the dominoes fall at that moment. The
murder of Patricia Linares was the cause of everything that happened
to him after that, including his dealings with El Ciego.
Javier and Gustavo talked about
the case. They were still unsure who was at war with El Gringo but
knew to anticipate further bloodshed. Javier decided to go out to
investigate and had to argue with Gustavo to keep him out of it. He
did promise to update him.
El Cuervo went to the hideout and
discovered what had happened. El Gringo's men had left El Ciego's
guard hanging upside down in the doorway. He called El Ciego to tell him and to
emphasize what this meant. El Ciego said that they would have to
remain hidden and he would be contacting his lawyer ASAP. As he
ended the call he said to himself that El Gringo will never find him.
El
Ciego may have been very clever up until this point, but he was
delusional. His arrogance and his madness would be his downfall.
Nancy yelled at Carlos to calm
down; court was in recess. Carlos was determined to see Alan rot in
jail. Nancy reminded him that there was no such thing as a perfect
crime but at least he finally knew who Alan really was. Carlos
ranted that he realized Alan always hated him and he was going to
kill him. Nancy implored him not to say such things. She said that
this was a huge blow but he had to be more intelligent than Alan, who
knew too much about him. He also could not deal with this alone. He
had to keep a cool head and figure out what to do. All Carlos wanted
was for Alan to burn in hell. The court clerk came to tell them that
the recess was over. Carlos followed her with Nancy after him to try
to get him to calm down.
Juan called Tatiana to ask her to
go shopping with him and he would take her to dinner. He trusted her
taste. After the call ended she squealed as she patted herself on
the back.
There
was no question in my mind that Tatiana thought she had struck gold.
While Juan was not to the manor born he has passed the first major
hurdle of education and the second one, employment at a prestigious
law firm. He knew that Tatiana hadn't passed inspection with his
mother or with his colleagues. What Tatiana needs to learn is that
beauty and sexual talent are not what would help navigate her way in a
drawing room.
Alan continued to protest that
the recording had been faked. The judge told him to shut up. He
asked Sonia to speak. She looked at Carlos, who nodded. The she
said that in view of the evidence presented she asked the judge that
Alan be sent to prison, term to be determined by the court for both
murders. The judge asked Carlos to speak and he requested that the
court delay sentencing for a few days so that Alan's new lawyer could
prepare. He was resigning from the case. Alan begged rather
pathetically as Carlos requested that formal charges be brought for
the murder of Patricia Linares and that he be sentenced accordingly.
Sonia then said that she will order an investigation. Alan kept
protesting until he was led out of the prisoner's dock. Sonia looked
at Carlos, almost with pity.
Boston:
Ricardo and Victoria went to
Diego's home and spoke with Kate and Emma. They handed over some
documents and asked when Diego would be back. Ricardo explained that
the case was complicated and he could not give an exact date. Only
that it isn't likely to be resolved quickly. They promised that they
would fight to reunite the family, whatever it took.
Mexico
City: Carlos bribed a guard to
allow him to see Alan. They brought him into the standard visiting
room and left them alone. Alan went on about knowing that Carlos
would come to his senses and get him out and that once he was free he
would see to it that Sonia was terminated. He tried to hug Carlos
who shoved him away and punched him in the eye. He yelled at him to
stop lying. “Now I understand everything and you will rot in this
place!”
Boston:
As Ricardo and Victoria
approached the police station they talked about her very first case. This
was it all over again because it was her first US case. He explained
that US police have a reputation for being difficult. However, they
had the truth on their side. They went into the building.
Mexico
City: Alan continued to say
that Sonia was lying and that he didn't kill Patricia. Carlos picked
him up off the floor by the lapels and landed another punch. And a
third.
The
upcoming scandal about Alan will severely damage Carlos' firm,
especially since Alan's name is on the door. Even getting Pedro out
of prison wouldn't do it because unless El Ciego and all of his
henchmen are killed before El Gringo's end there is still the
connexion between him and Carlos. While it would be long and
tedious to trace, there is still a money trail out there.
This
is true and Carlos probably realized that in the courtroom. His mind
may not yet have arrived at the likelihood that it was El Ciego's
bullet that hit Alejandra but that realization could lead to a faster
downfall because his rage will cause him to risk his life. Victoria,
who has learned a few unpleasant truths about the law in the US, will
soon be learning even more of them. Things that most US residents are deeply
embarrassed about. All to be revealed shortly. Until next we meet
Behind the Walls of Justice, I'm Christopher Mason.
