La Usurpadora - Capitulo 6 - Little murder engine that could not

We open with Pedro, hot in pursuit of escaping Paola, but she outsmarts him and he loses her.

Pedro must need to play some Grand Theft Auto to buff up his skills, because by the time he gets back to Gonzalo’s mansion (having already lost Paola), Nava is only on his second sentence of interrogating Monse, which means Pedrito lost Paola at the first corner. Nava wants to know what Monse is doing there, she tries to play dumb, but finally tells him to ask Paola if he wants more details. Monse leaves and Nava inquires about Pedro’s pursuit and aptly points out that it’s not the car that matters, but rather the driver. (Dear Pedrito, see our advice above.) I am finding their ongoing quip about “tu” vs. “usted” to be very amusing. Nava feels old being called “usted” and keeps asking Pedro to use a familiar “tu”, which Pedro refuses to do, because Nava is “older”.

Manuel has an enthralling phone conversation with Paola, so much so that he forgets an iron on one of his shirts and burns it. She is in Mexico, she declares, and came to finish what he could not. Manuel implores her not to do anything crazy. She retorts back with “don’t ever tell this to a crazy person”. (What is it that they say – the first step is admitting you have a problem? So unfortunate there are no Murderers Anonymous anywhere…) Manuel wants to meet face-to-face and Paola agrees. Terrifying Terry is not too happy about Paola’s (or “Manuel’s beloved”, as she calls her) reappearance.

Nava and Pedrito meet for some serious brainstorming action over spicy Mexican food. Nava thinks that it was a woman in Gonzalo’s house based on toiletries he saw and thinks she recently took a shower. Why take a shower, remarks Pedro, unless she was seeing someone there? Nava doesn’t believe that and Pedro agrees. Detective Pedro thinks Gonzalo left Mexico when his assassination attempt on President or Paola went awry. But Nava doubts it was him. He thinks it may be someone else close to the first family, who is trying to get between Paola and Gonzalo. He orders Pedro to investigate everything about Gonzalo and almost chokes on a spicy pepper. Pedro advises him to be careful – gastritis is not far away at his age and with such a diet. (Those two crack me up.)

Juana, it appears, is another one who noticed a change in Paola. She asks Paulina if she has been taking her medication. It has been a while, since she asked to replenish it for her. Paulina has no idea what medication is being discussed, but doesn’t skip a beat and asks Juana to buy her some more, as she is supposedly almost out.

Paulina is still up waiting for Monse when Arcadia arrives from casino drunk and brags about her winnings. Paulina is appalled Arcadia is a gambler, but Arcadia says that unlike some, she is not lucky enough to live off of the government’s dime and have a rich lover. With this Arcadia departs, and Monse finally arrives with news about Nava and the recon mission failure.

Manuel meets with Paola at the coffee shop. He asks about Gonzalo and Paola says they broke up, but stayed friends. She is staying at his house, while he is on a long trip. Paola needs Manuel’s help to get rid of this cheap copy of herself. She doesn’t want to return to this “house of crazy people”, as she calls it, but needs to finish what she started with her sister, who once stole everything from her and she will not get another chance to do that. Paola needs Manuel to get Paulina’s itinerary for her.

Lisette is in love and is discussing it with her grandmothers when Paulina shows up to breakfast. Paulina seems to be the only one to think that it is dangerous for a teenage daughter of the President to be meeting someone she met on the internet. Paulina tells her to invite him to dinner instead, so Lisette does just that. She asks Diego if he “will be very upset”, if she invited him to dinner (very curious invitation). Diego takes some time to high five himself off camera and agrees, then pretends to be super surprised that she is the daughter of the president, while his spying uncle happily observes this unfold on camera (Side-note: so they have cameras even in the bedrooms? Or did he install one there to spy on Lisette? Both are creepy, but if it’s the former, oy vey… Later we catch Molina supposedly checking cameras in the kitchen and he asks Lis how that new app he installed is working, so maybe he is spying through that.)

Elsewhere Emilio complains to a friend that Paola wants him in rehab. In reality, the real mastermind behind this suggestion, Gema, is now advising Carlos that rehab may not be the best option and Emilio may really need some attention from his father. (Really, lady? Yesterday you were concerned about the political implications of all of this. Gema is losing points fast…)

Nava spends some more motel time with his police friend and dispatches her to check in on Santamarina’s whereabouts. All she finds out is that he is traveling out of the country. She redeems herself later though, when she informs Nava that Gonzalo was also an arms dealer.

Nava then catches up with Paulina. He starts asking more questions, and the latter lets it slip that she is the victim, not the suspect, as it is her life that was changed. Nava is surprised to hear that. He thinks it was Paulina in Santamarina’s house and Paulina quickly realizes he may have seen Paola there, so she doesn’t deny it.

Gema found proof that Camacho is distributing money to the protesters, so they reject government’s proposal. Late Gema runs into Emilio and tells him she convinced Carlos to give Emilio some time. Emilio needs to behave and stay sober for a week. (Our money, sadly, is against him on that.)

Pascual appears in Nava and Pedro’s cave and tells them they have all been ordered to take a lie detector test by the President. They coply, but Pedro is not doing well with this test on any of the questions asked, especially about his girlfriend. (Could it be that she is make-belief?) Pedro tells Nava he is worried he failed, and Nava wants to know if there is anything Pedro is hiding and he wants to know it before Pascual finds out. Pedro denies having any secrets.

Nava’s next appointment is Gema – to complain about the lie detector test and inquire why Gema did not exempt him from that. Gema says she couldn’t, but she also didn’t want their secrets exposed. She wants to know if Pascual asked about Susana, Carlos’s 1stwife. (Interesting turn of events! What do these two have to do with her death?)

Paulina asks Manuel when Paola is coming back. Manuel doesn’t know, but promises to find out. Paulina also insists on talking to her mother, and Manuel brings her a prepaid phone. Finally Paulina is able to talk to Olga and convince her everything is fine, she is just gathering together funds for their non-profit. (Curiously, notice how Olga is telling Paulina “su merced” every time she is addressing her. I looked it up and it means “your mercy”, or basically a Colombian equivalent of an antiquated English “your grace”. The present context of this expression for Olga, for example, is to ask: “when is your mercy coming back? Is your mercy telling me the truth?” Very interesting!!)

Now to the meat of the episode. Manuel and Terrifying Terry came up with a plan for Paola: Paulina was going to go to a school and meet and spend time with the kids. Paola wants to kill her right there. Manuel advises that she lets Terrifying Terry do it, but Paola is insistent that she will carry out the deed herself. She states this, while taking her medication with a glass of whiskey (always a great combination). Nevertheless, Manuel instructs Terry to take care of it.

The latter leaves a gun in one of the bathroom stalls at the school and informs Paola. Upon Paulina’s arrival, Terry is in place with fake press credentials and Paola, wearing a terrible bandana, is hiding in the bathroom. Paulina spends some time meeting the children, and eventually follows one of the girls to the restroom to talk to her. Here Paola has her in her sights, with a gun aimed squarely at Paulina. Yet, Paola is unable to shoot (unclear if the presence of a little girl changed her mind, or she just couldn’t). She sends a text to Terrifying Terry that it’s a no-go and spends some time afterwards freaking out. (Beanie moment: what was her plan exactly? She was going to shoot the First Lady in the restroom without any exits, and with secret service outside the door? Was that bandana going to help obscure who she was, when she tried to escape? Anyway, pardon me a fleeting common sense moment. Back to novela land…).

Manuel is unhappy with Terry for not finishing the job and tells her so, while holding a ketchup packet and dispensing some at Terry’s command on the fried chicken she is eating in the car. Terry disagrees and thinks it only increases their value in Paola’s eyes – she needs them now.

Carlos comes to dinner and is in a good mood, he even takes a very awkward selfie with the family. Gema comes as he sits down to dinner and Lisette is about to tell him she invited a friend she likes. Gema needs to talk to him, so he leaves and they go into his office. There Gema says they finally know who is financing Camacho (someone called Fangul) and can finally stop those protests. They decide to celebrate this news by performing some adult acrobatics right there in his office, without, I might add, putting a sock on the door. (Another Beanie moment: he is feet away from his family having dinner and stepped out, supposedly, for a moment. Yet, there was no better time and place than his office table? Carlos is losing a ton of points too now.)

Thanks, Ria! I really needed this since I was watching a Bears game at the same time. Loved your commentary.

It was odd that Pedro was failing one question after another about the “girlfriend” on his lie detector test. Your suggestion that she might be make believe would make sense.

The oddest thing to me was Paulina in her dress with the cutouts on the front on her chest. Didn’t she just get shot recently in the chest? Even if it were not recent, there would be a SCAR. Continuity, anyone?

At least we know that granny doesn’t text when she drives and Pedro gets some of his info from supermarket tabloids.

More action tomorrow! Oh, yeah, Pedro had to make sure Nava knew action meant “sex”. Too funny.

Thanks, Ria.

These peopke, right?

Carlos seems to only have a spark when he is canoodling with Gema. It just be her pantsuits. What a fearless leader. I get no taken guys from this guy.
Nava is a Randy Energizer bunny, but he at Least seems to have some intelligence and a sensor of humor. How are he and Gena connected ?

Is Manuel in love with Paola?

The title was wonderful Ria!

The recap was sensational from start to finish. You filled in all the action admirably while managing to lighten the darkness with great humor.

"They decide to celebrate this news by performing some adult acrobatics right there in his office, without, I might add, putting a sock on the door" was my hands down favorite. Others included "Dear Pedrito, see our advice above)" and "Terrifying Terry is not too happy about Paola’s (or “Manuel’s beloved”, as she calls her) reappearance".

It isn't only Terry who is terrifying. Manuel is so afraid of Paola his voice almost trembles when he speaks to her. He is beyond obsessed. Yet, I'm not sure what bothers me most. What I've just described or Terry who walks around in her underwear in front of him. Why would someone who has a vacant spot in their chest (in lieu of a heart), ever have pets? My biggest worry is that Terry is going to hurt one of the dogs. If Manuel and Terry are siblings, whatever house they grew up in must be one of sheer horror.

"Juana, it appears, is another one who noticed a change in Paola. She asks Paulina if she has been taking her medication". Juana doesn't know when to keep quiet does she? There is a nice, docile woman ensconced in the house, just let it be.

Do we know if Pau's mother is still being drugged? She did not seem well but of course was very emotional finally hearing from her daughter. Wonder if and when Nava will have a clue as to what is going on? He and Pau must join forces to get this sorted out.

Very curious about Carlos' first wife. I really wanted to like Carlos but he is selfish and cares more about a romp behind closed doors than he does his children.

Ria and Jarifa, it didn't occur to me Pedro doesn't have a girlfriend. He has gotten several calls. If not a girlfriend, who could be on the other end? Mom?? :O) That said, I like him and he is a breath of fresh air.

I believe (sadly) that Lisette does love her mother. She hasn't seemingly noticed the change from a screaming, mad shrew into a calm, non-hysterical, affectionate woman.

Pure pleasure Ria. Thank you!

Diana

Sorry... "Taken guys" was supposed to be " galan vibes"...it's early, and I am still half asleep.

Nava and Pedro make a cute team. They bring a little humor to the darkness of this story.

Jarifa - yes, the chest cut out dresses were interesting. I guess they have extra strength Neosporin there in TN land. I, too, found it hilarious Pedro had to explain that action meant sex to Nava, just in case he was not familiar with such lingo.

Susanlynn - sadly I am also not getting any galan vibes from Carlos. I think Carlos, Gema and Nava all know each other from college.

Diana - Yes!! Don't understand how Terrifying Terry seems sometimes even affectionate towards pets and hope all three survive the length of the show. Terry and Manuel have quite a few disturbing house habits indeed. Not sure if Dona Olga is still being drugged, and that's a good question.

Thanks you guys. I am about to hit the road and may not be back to comments until later tonight, so see you then!

Love the title Ria. "Little Enginge That Could" was part of my childhood. Good memories.

Also loved your opener:

Pedro must need to play some Grand Theft Auto to buff up his skills, because by the time he gets back to Gonzalo’s mansion (having already lost Paola), Nava is only on his second sentence of interrogating Monse, which means Pedrito lost Paola at the first corner.

Pedro does seem like a very unfit and somewhat clueless ayudante in the military and now for Nava. But whatever. I do like Nava's lovers. Have seen her briefly in other telenovelas.

Count me in as being very interested in the issue of Susana, the first wife. Did Gema arrange for her death. In order to clear the way to Carlos? Ugh.

This was great too:

"While taking her medication with a glass of whiskey (always a great combination).

Will have to go back and re-watch so I can catch "merced". Very interesting.

Thanks as always for a crackerjack recap of a fascinating story.

I want to see Andrés Palacios in a real galán role and not in these lukewarm ones.

Loved the title, Ria, and the recap was just as good, thank you! I was very tired last night and kinda dozed off a few times, but now I know what I missed.

I agree with everyone's comments. Pedro and Nava are turning out to be a fun pairing, somewhat like Andy and Barnie.

Diana, " I really wanted to like Carlos but he is selfish and cares more about a romp behind closed doors than he does his children." (sigh) He is truly disappointing. HOw on earth will he be redeemed? At this point, I am hoping he gets an anvil.

Doris, I had noticed the "merced" line since the first episode, but thanks for pointing it out now. It is quite interesting that, in that culture, it is both the parent and the children who speak to each other so formally and with such respect.

My least favorite scene was the tabletop acrobatics---while the rest of the family was waiting for Carlos to have their dinner.

Jarifa, I too would really like to see Andres in a traditional "galan" role. I'm hoping he does a better job in selecting his roles.

Ria: I enjoyed your recap. It was funny, interesting & scary at the same time.

I have ZERO confidence in Pedro being able to catch the Bad Guys considering all he does is eat, flirting with the young ladies at the jewelry shops, etc.,

On Dona Olga: I think she's being drugged too, I have my doubts she'll make it alive to the Gran Final. However, Wilson & Andrea need their ANVILS soon. While Paulina is in danger back in Mexico, he forgets about his GF by banging her best friend ? WTH ?

Susanlynn: Manuel in love with Paola ? ROFLOL.

RGV Chick: I'm with you on Carlos the JACKASS President. It's quite clear he's addicted to Gema 24/7 banging her inside Los Pinos while his kids are going downhill for obvious reasons.

Judy: I've been saying this for awhile. Either Gema or Paola had Susana WHACKED. Mark my words, I wouldn't be shocked if we get to see a flashback on how Susana really died.

Forgot to check the follow up comments box. Foggy this morning. Hope you have a good trip Ria.

Judy: I'm betting either Paola or Gema whacked Susana. There's something about Gema that scares the expletive out of me! How far will she go to becoming First Lady or maybe even President down the road ?

Thanks, Ria. My fave: He orders Pedro to investigate everything about Gonzalo and almost chokes on a spicy pepper. Pedro advises him to be careful – gastritis is not far away at his age and with such a diet.

And I love vocab, so thanks for "su merced."

Pedro faking a girlfriend? I don't know, the ladies seem to dig his charm. Didn't we see him kissing a pretty girl last week?

I'm so done with Carlos. After everyone was getting along at dinner and he even took a pic to commemorate it, he boinks Gema while the family waits for him? Paulina seems to be warming up to him, but she deserves better.

Do we know which mother is the birth mother of the twins?

Thanks for the reap Ria! Your title sums up our main crazy antagonist well. And your comments about the other characters gave me a fun chuckle. Safe travels as you are out and about.

Pedro and Nava's banter is fun and as other have mentioned they are bright source in a rather dark story.

Jarifa, yes the cut out dress was an interesting choice in light of Paulina's injury but it seems wardrobe missed that one. I thought it was funny that she had on those high heels as she played with children.

Susanlynn, wonderful description of Nava as a Randy energizer bunny.

Diana and Susanlynn, ITA that Carlos is such a disappointment. Not galan material and very selfish. I want him to be redeemed but he seems suck on stupid.

Diana, I share your concern about Terry's dogs. The writers might be trying to show us she not all bad because of the dogs but she is all bad. They seemingly want to try to make Paola with all her crying as well. Basta!

JudyB and Steve - ITA that there is something to Susana's death. It's easy to think Paola did something to her but Gema is proving herself to be ruthless as well.

Rgv Chick - the table acrobatics were creepy to me as well. His family is downstairs waiting for him...just ick.

Niecie, I believe Pau's mother is the birth mother.

"The writers might be trying to show us she not all bad because of the dogs but she is all bad" had me nodding in vigorous agreement Karen. Well said.

Pedro/Nava and Andy/Barney. Love it Rgv Chick! Reminds me of another fairly recent novella where Arath de la Torre and another actor used to finish each other's dinners as well as sentences. Now, that's a bromance.

Diana

Ria--Consistently top notch writing, entertaining, compelling and charged with emotion. Thank you ever so much.

Niecie: Olga is the birth mother of the twins. I think we learned in the first or second episode that either one was taken from her or she couldn't care for both and gave one up for adoption. Strange that Paola blames Paulina for taking away everything from her. Granted that Arcadia is a harridan, but given Pao's taste in expensive clothes, spa trips, plastic surgery, vacations, prestige, I wonder how she would do in Bogota now?

I noticed Paulina's cut-out dress right away, too. I looked for a bandage--which only a day ago Monse was going to change.

The idea that Pedro has a fantasy girl-friend is intriguing. Almost as much as the mysteries surrounding the other characters. He may have gleaned all his sex information from the internet. And I hadn't thought that his calls might have been from his mother. He WAS talking to someone outside the gates when Paola came flying through. Now I'll have to go back to see what he was saying.

Gema is two-faced.

Unless, like Montecristo, Gonzo survives a burrito burial at sea, he's dead and sharkbait. He was listed in the credits as a "special guest," tasty for sharks. I also wish Carlos wasn't behaving so detestably with Gema (what does she have over him AND Emilio AND for all we know, Nava) or he'd be a decent galan, trying to move Mexico forward. Just a hint--Arath Bethke is listed right after Sandra in the intro, while Andres is listed at the very end after "Y Andres Palacios." Hmmmmm.

Question that probably can't be answered. How did baby Paola get to Mexico with what I assume is her birth name. I mean can it be coincidence that one is Paola and the other is Paulina?

The minute I saw Manuel ironing, before the phone call, I knew he was going to burn the shirt. What a contrast, Terry the Terrifying in bed with the dogs and Manuel doing chores.

Another question: Can anyone remember if Paulina knew she had an identical twin, before she was kidnapped? In other words, did she know her family history. Did anyone else in Bogota. Apparently not Wilson.

Karen: The Perry Mason in me strongly believes Gema (or Paola) likely had Susana whacked. I've NEVER liked that woman from the get-go based on her Body Language.

I mean this woman is hell-bent on becoming First Lady of Mexico (killing Paulina, whom everyone assumes is Paola, but they do NOT know the real story yet IF Paulina's Mommy from Colombia comes to the DF) or possibly President in the future.

If this gets more popular, I'm hoping Univision brings it back.

Anita: Facundo is going to figure this out very easily. Big question is whether he knows how many people want Paulina DEAD ?

Forgotten little details like the scar or bandage are what separate good programs from the truly great ones. It is sloppy production.

Diana and Anita, thanks! I complain when a TN moves too slowly, but truth is LU moves so swiftly I can't keep up.

Gema is selfish and a twit, but I don't see her as evil. I can't see her being behind the death of the first wife, but I'm wrong half the time. I think I'd like her better if she was at least after power, but it seems Carlos is all she wants.

Just got home and enjoyed reading all the comments. No matter what is going on in this show, the patio is always fun.

The guy playing Carlos seems to have one expression and no energy. I am not impressed. Let Gema have him, I say.

Paulinas wound appears to have healed quite miraculously. I gave myself a pretty deep cut on my index finger while washing a milkglass dish that I didn't realize was broken recently , and the doctor used glue to close it. Maybe Paulina's wound was super glued.

Okay, I am ready for tonight's action.

Looks like Dragon is starting soon.

Steve - I'm with Niecie on Gema. Yes she's ambitious but I not reading killer. Though she knows she's smarter than Carlos, she seems to be happy to be his lover. If she were ruthless, she'd go for the top spot.

Jarifa -ITA that great productions look after the little things.

Anita - I don't think Paulina knew but I'm not sure. Paolo just found out so it seems Olga just kept that info to herself. Also good observation about the actors' order in the credits.

Nina and Susanlynn...If you have the closed caption option on your TV's, Univision did decide to provide English closed captions for this particular show. I suppose it would be CC3 on your sets.

Hi everybody! Finally back and able to read all the interesting comments I missed today!

JudyB - thanks! A day business trip, but took longer than expected. Am finally back, had dinner and am all strapped in for another riveting episode! On Nava's lover - this is the first time I am seeing her, but I am liking her too!

Rgv Chick - Indeed, very interesting how respectful Colombians are. It is unlike any other culture I am familiar with - in most of the Asian/South and Central Asian cultures for example, children address parents with the formal respectful "you", but not the other way around... Very curious!

Steve - laughed at your vote of no confidence in our Pedrito. Too funny.

Niecie - yes, very surprising! Pedro looks quite charming, I would think he has no problem getting attention.

Karen - "stuck on stupid" about Carlos sounds right. Sadly... Maybe there is more to him that we will see later? But with such a poor start to the character development, hard to see how they will redeem him.

Anita - Montecristo scenario sounds so intriguing!! Now I really hope that they are planning something this interesting! Also, I agree with Karen and don't think Paulina knew that she is a twin. I seem to remember a scene with Monse, where Monse was asking if they were twins and Paulina said she didn't think so. Also she did not react in any way when she saw Paola to indicate that she thought it was anything more than coincidence. Hoping they will give us more info though as the story develops!

I'm a little late, but great work!

It's seriously unusual for twins to be separated at birth these days. Back in the early aughts when Mundo de Fieras aired we had an example, but this is about the next generation. Oh, well...

Would Gema even have a political career if she manages to become the third Sra Bernal? How do things like that work in Mexico? It used to be that a divorced man didn't have a chance to become president of the US, then Reagan came along in 1980.

I don't think that this will end without everyone who survives finding out about the switch.

Josh Gutierrez (Molina) was also in Un Poquito Tuyo and EHDLS.

Ria thanks for the recap.

The ending was disgusting. Did they even lock the freakin door?
I never liked gema. El presidente is a
Total jackass. Is he galan? He's a bad
One. And Nava's not all that endearing
Either. Isn't that enformant married?

Iam so glad this tn is 25 eipsodes cuz
More than that would be tragic. Like the first family of this ficticous
Administration. He's a terrible leader

"Gema is Loosing points we points" That ship sank the moment I saw her giving Paulina the sink eye and then calling her a liar? She can talk?

I'm tired of her sister, why don't they put her out of our misery. There
Is What....19 episodes left? I'm still
Waiting for Carlos to really give the
Good twin a really good look. And he
Can probly do that if gema would stop
Throwing him on conference tables and
Unzipping his presidential pants. I do
Not feel sorry for her falling into bed cryin cuz she can't have the POM
President of Mexico. Like potus. Didnt
Know what that stood for till this year.

Ok that's it for me tonight. I'll read
The other one later.

Thank you Ria.

UA - Yes, we haven't had a twin story line in a while here. I wonder what reason they use for the separation.

Nina - as usual, made me laugh with "unzipping his presidential pants". Too good. Carlos needs to step up and soon, if he is to have any hope.
