La Usurpadora - Capitulo 7 - Help! El Presidente escaped from the loony bin!

In a follow up to yesterday’s hot and heavy pursuits that El Presidente and Gema decided needed to happen right there, on the desk in his office, several feet away from his family having dinner, Paulina decides to go looking for Carlos to ask a few questions. Gema and Carlos have concluded their hay roll by then and are congratulating themselves with this impromptu rendezvous (eye roll), when they hear a knock on the door. Cue the action of  quickly putting their clothes back on, as if nothing happened.

Paulina walks in and feels uncomfortable, clearly sensing she is interrupting something, but Gema cleverly says “we are finished” and wishes them a good night, while making faces at Carlos behind Paulina’s back. After a short conversation with Paulina, Carlos tells her they need to talk about their relationship. He takes her to a restaurant, where apparently he took Paola on one of their first dates. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall place with ambiance (so very unlike Paola), but it seems that at least that one time Paola had a good time there.

Paulina is struggling to enjoy all of the local delicacies, including mezcal - a type of liquor with worms in it. (she gets one worm in her glass, apparently it’s luck, says Carlos. I was hoping the luck will consist of that glass breaking before she needs to drink it, but no such fortune…) Carlos’s agenda for the night includes telling her that in the recent few weeks he has been remembering what it felt like in the beginning of their relationship years ago, and how happy they were. (Hooold your presidential horses for just a second. Please raise your hand if you just slept with someone, who is not your wife, two feet from your children having dinner. What is going through his head? And when exactly was he remembering those great things – while Gema was putting on her best moves?). Paulina then almost chokes on a hot pepper and we cut to the evening, when her stomach continues to bother her, long after the awkward dinner with the President is over. Despite all of this, she tells Monse, it was a good day – she talked to her mother.

Next morning Paulina is resolving all of the world’s problems – gathering donations for the kids, helping Lisette with the menu for Diego’s dinner and meeting with the wife of one of the protesters. From the latter she finds out that the protesters are being paid by the political opponents of El Presidente. She rushes to him with this information, and walks in right after he tells Gema that he wants to try and save his marriage and family. (Seriously dude?! Beginning to feel bad for Gema even…)

Paola, meanwhile, receives a text from Gonzalo’s arm dealing partner Santiago (same one who apparently tried to off Paola. Seems that a day late and a dollar short, but Paola finally believes Gonzalo). Santiago is impatient with Gonzalo’s long absence. Paola, pretending to be Gonzalo, texts him that he is back and will meet Santiago at his house that evening. She conceives of a plan: let’s lure Paulina to Gonzalo’s house, and Santiago will think she is Paola and finish the job. She goes to see the troublesome duo – Manuel and Terrifying Terry, who are both not too pleased with yet another change of plans (not that she explains it in detail either). She tells Manuel to get Paulina to come to Gonzalo’s house under the pretenses that Paola wants to exchange places back, and Paulina would be free. Terrifying Terry demands payment for the previous job and Paola agrees, but only once they finish this one. Before she leaves, Manuel wants Paola to know he is not doing this for the money.

Despite this, Paola knows she needs some currency, and she must be fresh out of it, as she tries to sell a couple of the paintings from Gonzalo’s house. The gallery she brings them to, though, is skeptical that they are originals and decide not to buy. While there, Paola runs into someone who knows her, but quickly escapes saying she is not the First Lady. Having failed at this money scheme, Paola resorts to something different. Through Manuel she obtains the phone number of the wife of another one of Carlos’s political opponents – Fangul (same one, who apparently finances the protesters, as we found out yesterday prior to that famous office romp scene). She sets up a date with Fangul in the church, of all places, and exchanges money for the information that Carlos’s first wife Susana committed suicide. Fangul is surprised that the First Lady needs money so badly that she is resorting to this. Paola is not concerned with his opinion and they part ways. She hides the money in an urn, having dumped someone’s ashes into a potted plant (she really has no soul or conscience).

Nava spends more motel time with Irene, gets some more information and discusses it with Pedro. Nava thinks something is off with Paola/Gonzalo story line. They also finally have the sniper’s address. He sends Pedro for the sniper and goes to spend time with the First Lady. Pedro teases him that he is lately wanting to spend more time with Paola. Nava doesn’t get very far on his information quest with Paulina, but Pedro finds out that sniper’s mother has filed a missing persons report. They go to sniper’s apartment and it’s abandoned, clearly something has happened to whoever lived there.

Emilio, who has been freaking out for the first half of this episode without any alcohol, finally goes to the bar with his friend and from there sends an S.O.S. text to Gema, asking her to come save him. Gema complies and brings him home right in time for the family dinner with Diego, which – after much preparation for most of the episode, complete with menu and outfit selections, is finally happening. Even Nava, who was passing by, is invited to join. Gema, when she shows up, is also invited by Piedad, and Carlos enthusiastically agrees. (I know I am repeating myself, but really – it seems that the worms from mezcal ate his brain. He sleeps with his mistress right under his wife’s nose. Five minutes after he decides he wants to patch things up with his wife, then proceeds to invite his mistress to join their dinner, after giving her the boot. This cannot be the main character they want us to root for, can it? At this point I am rooting for a lobotomy for him…)

While at dinner, Paulina receives a text from Manuel that she needs to be at Gonzalo’s at 9 pm. She excuses herself from dinner and Lisette is upset. A few minutes later, El Presidente needs to go tend to his protesters and Nava makes an excuse to leave too and follows Paulina. Lisette and Diego are left with Emilio and the grandmothers in a very awkward dinner scene. Emilio is being unpleasant to Lisette, as usual, but Diego actually does a great job defending her (finally, someone stands up for the poor girl!) When Diego is getting ready to leave, Lisette apologizes for her family, and he says all families have their own weird sides to them. He then makes her laugh and gives her a kiss on the cheek.

The lobotomy-requiring president receives news that there is enough evidence to charge Camacho and calls Gema with this great news, telling her they need to celebrate. (No new sentiment to add here, see lobotomy comment above…)

Paulina arrives at Gonzalo’s and leaves secret service behind to enter alone. Nava is watching her enter the house and a few minutes later sees Santiago arrive. Paulina clearly never watched any horror movies, as she is walking around the dark house and shouting: “Is anyone there?”. (Also why is Gonzalo’s house draped in plastic? Was he trying to pickle it?). While she is wandering around there, Santiago comes from behind, recognizes her as Paola and pulls the gun on her. Cliffhanger!

Ria, your recap is worthy of the comment that the recap was better than the episode. I am here thinking this morning that only 25 episodes is a REAL good idea. Highlight: “At this point I am rooting for a lobotomy for him...” The whole idea of Carlos having sex just two feet from his children having dinner, as you put it, destroyed the character for me just like Wilson when he had sex with Andrea. No galanes for Paulina in this one no matter how they might try to in the end unless they introduce a new character.

The bullet wound was back last night being dressed.

Quite clever hiding the money in the empty urn. How I would love someone to come and retrieve those “ashes” of their loved one and spend it all.

I guess Paulina and Neva sparring and Diego telling Lisette how his father gets drunk and slaps his mother around was supposed to lighten it all up. Sure . . . Nothing light in this one.

Why was Gonzalo’s house all draped in plastic? “Was he trying to pickle it” was another good one, Ria.

Might Paulina soon have matching bullet wounds? Symmetrical scars as it were?

I forgot to give you a real big “thank you” for giving me some god laughs this a.m. : )

Ria, your superb comments were fast and furious, I am beyond impressed.

"worms from mezcal ate his brain" had me laughing out loud. This was wonderful.

"This cannot be the main character they want us to root for, can it? At this point I am rooting for a lobotomy for him…)" mirrored my thoughts exactly!

"Hooold your presidential horses for just a second. Please raise your hand if you just slept with someone, who is not your wife, two feet from your children having dinner. What is going through his head? And when exactly was he remembering those great things – while Gema was putting on her best moves?)" was outstanding and needed to be repeated in its entirety.

While I still believe in this story, the writers made a grave error in having Carlos vacillate between Paola and Gema. In doing so he not only looks undecisive, he is disrespecting and using both women. He wants a soothing balm to ease his conscience for cheating, yet he wants his family intact and the freedom to carry on an affair for which he will never leave his wife for. What a catch. Having Nava move from sweating up the sheets with married Irene to galan isn't terribly appealing. You are totally right Jarifa. I don't see Pau with anyone we've seen thus far.

While most scenes last night were troublesome, one in particular stood out for me. "Manuel wants Paola to know he is not doing this for the money." Pure unadulterated slavish worship. Chilling.

I was also not happy Paola got a look at Terry's dogs. I worry about them as much as I do Pau.

Pau deserves all the credit in the world for managing to stay calm and in control in spite of one wretched situation after the next. I love the vibrancy the actress gives to both roles and the teetering on the edge of madness she exudes when playing Paola. I admit I was not a Sandra fan when this started but she has been extraordinary.

All Lisette wanted was a nice family dinner. She was hurt but I give her credit for resiliency and not leaving in tears. When Diego went in for a kiss, I don't think he had her cheek in mind. But, she stood looking at him and he changed his mind and went for a gentler kiss on the cheek. My (only) favorite couple here.

"Might Paulina soon have matching bullet wounds? Symmetrical scars as it were?" Jarifa, I was wondering if a TN heroine has ever been shot more than once?? Unless Nava pops in out of the darkness, it doesn't look good.

But this was good. More than good - it was excellent.

Thank you Ria!

Diana

I also wanted to say Gema is wasting her talents.

How she managed to get Emilio peeled off the ceiling, out of his mania, and into what appeared to be a sane countenance in time for the (disasterous) dinner was incredible.

She is one of the best "fixers" I've seen since Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction. :)

Diana

Jarifa - thanks, and yes, looking dicey with the pickings out there for Paulina. The good thing though is that these days they show strong female characters, who don't need a galan and they know it. We'd still like a little romance, but it'd be good if it came with a solid character.

Diana - thanks and thanks for making me laugh as well - Harvey Keitel reference was spot on! Gema is indeed quite the fixer. Perhaps she really needs to consider presidency when they sort all of this stuff out... I agree, they story itself is still quite fascinating. I am really enjoying that it is not a carbon copy off the previous LU at all. In fact, other than the twins and a lobotomy-requiring Carlos, everything else is different. There is not telling where they will go with it, and the story is moving fast. ITA that Sandra is outstanding in this, portraying these two characters so differently. Count me impressed as well. We'll wait for a good galan to appear, but even if not, we are enjoying the ride. :)

Diana, I never saw the lead actress Sandra Echevarría in anything before but I do agree she is doing an outstanding job. Yes, she does do looney well.

Ria, so true about novelas these days with strong female characters. I was wondering how similar this was to the original and you answered my question.

At this point it will be confirmed to Paulina that Paola continues to try to kill her. Paulina should just tell Nava everything or run to the police.

Why does the actress playing Irene always get ridiculous oversexualized roles?

Is it possible Carlos killed his first wife? Or perhaps Gema or Nava?

Excellent recap, Ria! Enough in itself to make this tn worth watching, but I also like the way the writers manage to keep it suspenseful. Maybe in true tn tradition, Carlos or Nava will have a character transformation and suddenly be worthy of Paulina. I loved the cute and funny restaurant scene. Evidently Paulina, colombiana, hates Mexican food! (and drink). Doesn't Carlos notice the change? In the first full dinner scene it looks as if Paulina and all those household members are really turning into a family. Diego seems nice, and he and Lisette make a cute adolescent couple. But what is he up to?

SpanProf, "In the first full dinner scene it looks as if Paulina and all those household members are really turning into a family".

They did, didn't they??

Except when Nava and/or Manuel are around, Pau has seemed rather relaxed and her pleasing personality is shining through. I liked the way she encouraged Lisette last night and told her she looked lovely. Even Pau's (not real) mama had a kind word for her granddaughter.

Diana

Always enjoy your recaps Ria and always enjoy these episodes. So far this is a great ride, in spite of the character defects of the major players.

"(I know I am repeating myself, but really – it seems that the worms from mezcal ate his brain. He sleeps with his mistress right under his wife’s nose. Five minutes after he decides he wants to patch things up with his wife, then proceeds to invite his mistress to join their dinner, after giving her the boot. This cannot be the main character they want us to root for, can it? At this point I am rooting for a lobotomy for him…)"

Nicely put Ria. And Wow, just wow... Wonders why his lover is "too tired to celebrate" after he's told her he wants to get back with his family. Dude, there's a limit to slavish loyalty and self-sacrifice. Although apparently Manuel hasn't realized it yet. Both Carlos and Paola have enamored slaves who devotedly do their bidding.

I DID gasp a bit when Paola dumped the ashes into a potted plant. Granted ashes to ashes and dust to dust....but still, it seemed like such a sacrilege. Color me Old School I guess. Certainly a further clue to "character", as if we needed one.

I learned a new word in this one: When the grannies were sparring (and attempting to comfort Lisette) Carlos' mom said "One is either "jamón" or "charal" and one meaning of "charal" in Mexican Spanish is "estar muy flaco". Naturally pudgy Granny said it was better to be "jamón".

Thanks Ria. Good story, good patio, great recapper.

Ria--Consistently top notch recaps. You deliver. We enjoy...and it's gratis. So, a big thank you for the non-culinary delight.

If Carlos were really sincere, he would have kept his "presidential pants" zipped and told her to go home. He's too bland to be a (cheating) galan and Nava is too hyper and unpredictable to be a (cheating) galan. However, I think it will be Nava who saves Paulina's butt over and over again.

The restaurant scene was necessary, but so unrealistic. Where is security? Where are the staring patrons? Nobody recognizes their own president? Maybe in some flashback, this is supposed to start Carlos' wheels in his not-yet-lobotomized brain that there is something really different about this Paola.

Pedro consistently delivers great lines--back and forth with Nava. I'll go with the First Lady; no, you go with the sicario and I'll go with the First Lady; no, I'll go; no I'll go and so it went.

The suspense of not knowing where this tale is going, with two unlikable galans, is what makes it a cut above most of the dramas we're getting.

Diana: I strongly agree with you that Paulina will be better off with NOBODY in the end, maybe she can help the kids back in Colombia (assuming Paola & Co., don't whack the orphans first).

Anita: Carlos is the Latino Bill Clinton: he cannot keep his zipper zipped up whenever he's banging Gema.

I hope you're right about Nava being Paulina's knight & shining armor because I have NO confidence in seeing him being the ultimate lover considering he's banging how many "female police assets" ?

Judy: Is Crazy Teresa gone yet ?

FLASH OT--
I found the list of swear words. It came from a comment that I copied from Falsa Identidad--over on Telemundo. I didn't copy the attribution, but it was probably Novelera. They have much grittier fare than Uni, but they still bleeped out the swear words. If interested, e-mail me--I don't think I would want it repeated here.

There are several websites that cater to Spanish slang dictionary which includes some pretty raw swear-words and double entendres. The one I have is Mr. Gabe's Spanish Slang Dictionary at:

http://www.mrgabe.com/dictionary/Spanish/index.asp?startrow=0&maxrows=915

It's in alphabetical order and a little difficult to search (if you don't know what you are searching for...)

"presidential pants" and "not-yet-lobotomized brain" just made me laugh out loud Anita. And you're so right in that there seems to be little certainty with this except of course for the "two unlikable galans".

Judy, I was disgusted with Paola's treatment of the ashes too. Old school or not, I think our reactions signify we have decency and respect toward those who have passed. We've seen firsthand Paola has so little regard for the living, it stands to reason she has none for the dead.

Steve, I think Pau heading home to work with the children is a great idea. Hopefully, she will go herself, having left these two losers behind.

Diana

Anita, thanks for the slang link. I will add it to the rest of my references. You can never have too many!

It's Nina we should thank for presidential pants, but she was referencing them as unzipped.

Good one Ria.

Santiago comes in from behind, recognize's her as Paola and pulls his gun out. Cliffhanger!
This could be the night Nava could maybe discover she's not the evil twin
I wish somebody would find out. The
Poor girl has no one to fight for her.
As sweet as monse is, she's a nervous
Nelly.

What is the deal with emilio? Why is he drinking? Did he see mom committe suicide and he can't remember it, but he knows something is there and only
The alcohol can dull the pain?
I'm just tryin to help the kid,his dad
Is to busy doin his chief of staff. In
His house. Where His Wife and kids live. During various times of the day.

At this point I'd like to see her with
Nava. Carlos is a fruit cake. And the
Fruit is missing. And who the hell voted For him? His personal life is shot to hell. They are not the happy first family People think they are. He
Can't even see his wife is not the one
He married. And who takes his wife to a place that serves a drink with worms
In it? Really? There's a drink like that? OMG WHOES idea was that? Yuck!

I'm I'm calm. Drinking worms, that is
Disgusting but to each his n hers own.

"But Manuel wants Paola to know he's not doing this For The many". Really Manny? Then why praytell are you leading a young woman to her death? Out of the goodness of your heart? Oh
Thats right you have an iceblock in ur
Chest. Terry- fying, what are they to each other again? Never mind, they'll
Probly be dead in two weeks anyways.

Ria thank you. My auto correct wants to Call you "Tia" which is pretty but not your name. Love your story telling

Ria thanks so much for the recap. Though many of your witticisms have be posted, I loved your analysis of poor Carlos and his lobotomy!

ITA w/Jarifa and Diana - none of the men in the tn measure up to Paulina. And just because Nava may rescue her a few times (a guess on my part) doesn't make him worthy.

Diana - thanks for several good observations. Paola seeing Terry's dogs, boo writers just boo. Lisette and Diego are the best and only couple thus far. Though the cop buddies Nava and Pedro are a hoot. Gema should use her talents elsewhere; she doesn't need to settle for being Carlos' mistress. And Sandra is doing great work!

SpanProf - yes the writers are making this suspenseful! I'm still hoping that Paulina stays alone.

JudyB - I'm with you and Diana on the ashes. I was shocked and then when Paola tried to
genuflect at the end was horrible.

Yes Steve ITA in having Paulina alone!

Anita - thanks for the dictionary link.

"But Manuel wants Paola to know he's not doing this For The many". Really Manny? Then why praytell are you leading a young woman to her death? Out of the goodness of your heart? Oh Thats right you have an iceblock in ur Chest. Terry- fying, what are they to each other again? Never mind, they'll
Probly be dead in two weeks anyways".

Nina, thank you. Ice is right! And "Terry-fying" was even better.

Karen, yes, I think Nava and Pedro deserve honorable mention too! I enjoy their expressions during all their conversations even though I am lost as to what they are saying most of the time.

Diana

Thanks, Ria. Late to the party, but it's been fun catching up with your recap and all the comments.

Nava might not be the best man for Paola, but he's the one she needs right now. Poor thing has walked smack into two assassination attempts in one day.

Hi everybody, late work day today - just now getting to respond!

Niecie - indeed, our girl Paulina is not lucking out here. I am heading over to see how this latest one works out today. Will report back on it shortly!

Anon 11:21 - not sure yet who is behind Susana's suicide or supposed suicide. I am hoping they uncover that soon!

SpanProf - I am amazed too that Carlos is not noticing the change! Was he really that oblivious to Paola that he doesn't notice now?

JudyB - thanks! I agree, this is a great ride so far - in a huge part due to all of you guys here on the Patio. But the show is moving at pace and that's encouraging. Some fresh plot points too, which is great. And I, too, definitely gasped when she dumped the ashes out. Disrespectful to say nothing at all, but yes - very telling of her character.

Anita - thank you and so true about the restaurant scene, I nodded right along with you reading your comment! Where were all the people and security? Thank you so much for that list of swear words - I will peruse it for sure. Vocab time ;)

Nina - thanks and love your comments as always. Manuel and Terry are just insane.

Karen - indeed, let's see how today's episode turns out. No bets on any galans yet...

"Manuel wants Paola to know he's not
Doing this for the "money".
Auto correct is a bitch at times.
"Many">>>>>No!
