La Usurpadora - Capitulo 12 - Romance on steroids

The new morning for Paulina starts with enjoying the sight of shirtless Nava on horseback, and for Paola it’s recon time around the Colombian house to see where she landed. Olga is excited that Paola is now talking (we, on the other hand, are still unclear whether she was faking it initially.) Paola continues to bond with Olga, calling her “mama”.

Newly recovered Paola is quickly putting some plans in motion. She starts by testing out Wilson. She doesn’t seem terribly impressed with him, but they both agree on their loose interpretation of morals, which pleasantly surprises Wilson (finally Paulina gets it, he thinks!) Paola then fakes feeling faint and asks him to call her a doctor, who was visiting Olga lately (same one she and Manuel were paying). Wilson is not too troubled by the fact that Paulina somehow knows the doctor she’s never seen, and does as he is asked. When the doctor arrives, Paola quickly ushers everyone out under the pretense of needing a sweater from upstairs, and rapidly discloses to the doctor that she knows Manuel and will pay the doctor herself if he cooperates. She asks him for some of her meds and borrows his cell phone to call Manuel’s house. Manuel is out and about (more on that later) and Terry picks up instead. She gives Paola a similar story – Manuel is dead, sending Paola into a spiral of self-pity that she is all alone in this cruel world, which really worries Olga. In response to this worry, Paola inquires if Olga ever wanted another daughter and does not seem to believe Olga’s response that she did not.

On a nearby ranch, Nava finally put the shirt back on and is calling Irene to ask her to obtain an order from the judge to search Gonzalo’s house. Irene isn’t sure she would be able to, as she is not in charge of the investigation. Their playful back and forth is overheard by Paulina, who proceeds to joke with Facundo about his policewoman girlfriend. Nava is so awkward in trying to quickly deny it, he almost burns the food he is cooking. It is even kind of cute. He then feeds her breakfast and coffee and they continue kissing and behaving like a couple. (It is super interesting to me that we made this jump to domestic bliss from the only kiss yesterday. I guess they are feeling the pressure of 25 episodes ,or maybe in their world a couple of weeks have gone by.) Nava is called away in the middle of the breakfast and ordered to report immediately to see the President.

If you are curious why, here is what happened. Fangul was visited by Molina, and in exchange for - we imagine - a not very modest fee, obtained the information about the death of a woman in Susana’s accident (same one, whose husband is now receiving a monthly fee from Gema for his silence). Fangul then brought said information to Carlos and told him that his two closest advisors/friends – Gema and Nava, were involved in this cover-up. Fangul now wants approval for his projects in exchange for not going public with this. Carlos had no idea about this accident and, seeing as they created this character with only two emotional settings, is now flipping his switch to ticked off. Nava and Gema are summarily requested to present their version of events, while Carlos is letting the steam out through his vocal cords.

Both of these suspects think that they did what they believed to be the right thing. Carlos was not in a condition to hear this news on top of Susana’s death and his career would have been ruined. So Nava covered this up (and got fired as a result), and Gema has been paying the dude to stay quiet all these years. Upstanding Carlos, who has no issue cheating on his wife, is nevertheless very upset with these two supposed friends with loose morals! Gema resigns on the spot, but Nava is adamant that he did the right thing and would do it again. He only asks Carlos not to give in to Fangul’s blackmail, as Nava is prepared to answer for his actions.

But Carlos goes away and thinks about it for a while. He tries to call Gema (probably as he is unused to strain his brain alone for such an extended period of time), but she doesn’t pick up. Ultimately he decides to approve Fangul’s projects and calls him right in time to prevent the blackmail info going public.

Gema is depressed on account of her new  unemployment situation, and Nava comes to take her out for a drink. They get drunk together and he advises her to take control of her life and stop planning it around Carlos (wise advice!)

As promised, returning to Manuel: he asks Teresa to see Paola’s grave, but Terry tells him she was cremated. When she leaves, so does Manuel, who does not seem to have bought that story. He goes straight to the hospital, describes Paola and wants to know if she was there. Obviously he is denied any information, but lucks out as Pedrito, armed with Nava’s order from the judge, is there  for the same purpose. Pedro conveniently happens to pass by, talking about it very loudly, right as Manuel is about to call it quits. Also very conveniently they then go to a very nearby room with an open door and continue loud discussions. Manuel learns that any info about Paola was erased.

Carlos comes to visit Paulina with the whole family in tow. They have a nice lunch until Nava shows up, and Carlos immediately gets up and almost indignantly excuses himself. Nava stays to entertain. Later Nava and Paulina meet up and spend some quality time together. In between kisses, Paulina asks Nava if he ever had anything to do with Paola, which he denies. Paulina says she wants out of this arrangement asap, and then they can think about what’s next between them.

Meanwhile back at the mansion, Pascual is bending Carlos’s ear on Nava’s complicity in the illicit affair of the dead woman and paid off husband. Pascual thinks both Gema and Nava betrayed their President, and Pascual, for one, always thought Nava was hiding something and didn’t trust him. Short of his voice of reason Gema, Carlos immediately orders an investigation into Nava’s investigation!! (And we wonder why governments are inefficient…) Pascual is quite pleased with that development.

In other news today, Emilio and Demetrio went to an AA meeting. Emilio is not quite ready and runs out in the middle of it.  Molina threatens Diego to cut off his college tuition payments, if he doesn’t reconcile with Lis immediately. Later Lis finds a bunch of flowers and stuffed animals in her bedroom. (I imagine Molina put them there, though they don’t show that). Lis calls Diego and they make nice.

Also Paulina and Nava discussed that Monse was fired and Paulina gives her a call and asks to come to the ranch. Monse takes five buses to get there, but is stopped by the security guard, as she doesn’t have an authorization. The doctor, who was just passing by in his car, stops and quickly authorizes Monse to come in without checking any ID. (Yes, he’s seen her at the house before, but I think we found the reason for all the security issues at his facility. Fish rots from the head, buddy…). Finally, Arcadia returns to the casino, but is asked to either pay her debts or leave. Desperate, she goes back to the mansion, returns the silverware and asks Juana for her forgiveness. Lis tells her she will speak to Carlos and ask to take Arcadia back. Jackpot dollar signs flash in Arcadia’s eyes.

Ria, an excellent retelling (as always). We are so fortunate to have you guiding us on this journey.

This stew is simmering in its own juices, not yet quite ready to come to a boil.

"Jackpot dollar signs flash in Arcadia’s eyes" was my favorite of many.

Your comments on comatose Carlos were insightful and very well stated: "seeing as they created this character with only two emotional settings, is now flipping his switch to ticked off" and "He tries to call Gema (probably as he is unused to strain his brain alone for such an extended period of time). If only Carlos were not so one dimensional, there might really have been a contest for the fair Paulina. Nava wins by default. I'm still not smitten.

So, Paola knew the truth all along. When Olga called her Paulina, it seemed to trip the wire that any affection she'd been shown for the last few days was meant for her sister. Not her.

Wilson bought Paola's accepting his infidelity? Major red flag. What a dork.

One person who is thinking is Manuel. Knowing his sibling all too well and his slavish devotion to Paola, luck is finally with him as he knows something is amiss.

"Upstanding Carlos, who has no issue cheating on his wife, is nevertheless very upset with these two supposed friends with loose morals!". His own position on the pedestal is precarious. Not a time to condemn others. Nava is right though in that Gema needs to create a real life for herself. Why people settle is beyond me.

"Fish rots from the head, buddy". Indeed.

I was so happy to see Monse with Paulina, I would not have cared if her fairy godmother transported her there. One of the few genuinely likeable characters here.

Pascual. Shut. Up.

I can see where a few balloons and goodies turned Lisette's head. Diego looks like he is in agony. I keep wondering if Paola ever showed Lis any affection as it is clear Lis loves her mother. Paulina being with Nava will prevent her from becoming Lis' mother, but hopefully they will establish a strong bond.

I love Diego but he really needs to take more care to be sure he is not being watched or overheard. I am not looking forward to a Manuel and Paola reunion. Neither, I believe will Terry.

This was wonderful Ria. Thank you!

Diana

Ria, thanks again for a great recap I'd be totally lost without you. The one area I still am not clear about is Susana's death. So she was in a car wreck, right? Was it also a suicide? There was a woman in the car with her - was she (the woman) having an affair with somebody, or was Susana having an affair? And why did Gema and Nava want to keep any of this from Carlos?

Gracias!

Good morning RIA. Excellent title. I used to call Jarifa the Titlemeister but I'm going to have to share that honor with you. You consistently come up with super ones.

The Nava/Paulina romance is indeed on steroids....

"He then feeds her breakfast and coffee and they continue kissing and behaving like a couple. (It is super interesting to me that we made this jump to domestic bliss from the only kiss yesterday. I guess they are feeling the pressure of 25 episodes..."

Even though I very much like the speed-dating style of these new short telenovelas, it is a bit dizzying as well.

And love your jaundiced view of Carlos:

"a character with only two emotional settings, is now flipping his switch to "ticked off"

And of course, his own weak moral code does not prevent him from judging harshly his two best friends for attempting to protect him. Granted, it was wrong. But given his shallow character, maybe they were right to cover up their shielding.

Don't like to watch telenovelas at night, but this show is a delightful breakfast treat along with your recaps. And those of Princess Juju. Thanks so much.

Great work, Ria.

The double lies by Teresa won't live long and she will be in very hot water. Paola is a killer and a mentally ill one who doesn't stop to think about the law or other consequences.

Lis has a need to be loved, like all children. Nobody wants to know that their mother doesn't love them, but Paola is a narcissist -- like Arcadia -- and is therefore incapable. She needs therapy or she will fall into the hands of a user like her mother. Molina is trying to turn his nephew into such a person and Diego is resisting. Good for him, but he needs to fight harder.

The lack of servants is concerning. Here it might be because the series is short and there is no room in the script for them, as they often have their own stories. It really bothered me in PyP where we had two very wealthy families who each had only one visible servant. Or were all the actors typecasst as servants at AQNMD?

Ria, another great episode and great recap! I agree with JudyB about your most excellent titles and I will happily share the designation of “titlemeister” with you. LOL I especially enjoyed you highlighting Carlos’ “situational” ethics.

Diana, Yes! Wilson is a “dork”. What did Paulina ever see in him?

Hugo, there are still many many questions to be answered.

Urban, Interesting comment about servants’ subplots, I am voting for the series being too short to accommodate them.

Question: Did Paola really feel anything for Manuel or is she just upset about not having anyone around as an ally?

I felt sorry for Miguel who is in the pressure cooker with the possibility of losing his tuition and his mother her financial support. Poor Lis.

Oh yes, the same old same old scene of the “gambler”( usually female ) being turned away from the casino. I know I saw this at least in LC . . . Since it grated on me, it must have occurred in others?

Over and out this a.m.

Ria, thank you, thank you , for that fun read with my Cheerios.

Ha...nearly naked Nava on horseback made me giggle not blush. I immediately thought it was a parody of photos I remembered seeing of shirtless Putin on horseback followed by that parody on SNL. Nyet, just nyet. That imagine Was burned into my brain at the time. Uff. Was that tongue in cheek or for realz ?

Good to see you Susanlynn!

Jarifa, I think Paola's reaction to Manuel being done was strictly self serving. I think it was pure panic. She is smart enough to know that Terry is boarderline foe - certainly not a friend. Only my thought - I could be wrong.

Diana

Diana, I will agree with you on that one. : )

Diana: Wilson is a total JACKASS & still an idiot!

UA: I'm wondering how long will Teresa stick around ? Won't be long if Manuel keeps drooling over Paola.

Ria: Keep up the good work!

Jarifa: I'm with you on Lizette. Poor girl!

Does Paola realize that car bomb was compliments of Terry-fying?I

OT ...Diana.. Hi there. Life has been hectic and stressful lately, so I often don't have time to comment, but I a here reading the rollicking recaps and insightful comments. The patio remains a place for me to have a mini vacation from reality.

If Wilson and Paulina weren't going out anymore, his moment with Andrea can't be labelled an infidelity. They're stirring the pot with nothing in it, besides Andrea's disloyalty.

Jarifa, yes and yes to so many (all really!) of your great comments. I, too, was so happy to see Monse. This made me laugh out loud: “Pascual. Shut. Up.”. Indeed!!! Also yes on Gema being give good advice on getting on with her life. People settle, and also people expect other people to change. Often a non-winning strategy...

Hugo, so from what we know so far, it appears Susana did commit suicide, and somehow in the process of that a woman died somehow (unintentionally). Carlos didn’t know about it and Gema/Nava chose to conceal it to preserve his mental state (presumably he would have felt very guilty on top of his guilt already), and his career (unclear on their intentions here, but we can presume they thought this would be a blemish on his presidential aspirations).

Hi everyone! Sorry I am popping in late today.

JudyB, you (and Jarifa) are too kind! Not sure the title even partially should be given to me, but I certainly cherish the wonderful company I am finding myself in - both presently and elsewhere on this great patio :-)
On your comments, yes it does feel dizzying, doesn’t it? Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I sort of expected some conversation covering the complexity of the situation and their feelings before we went to a happy family arrangement, coffee and breakfast. Well, maybe not these days. Again, as we mentioned a few times on here - how times of Mexican novelas have changed! Highly fascinating to watch.

Urban, yes - I am looking forward to Paola finding out about Terry’s lies. She will likely to be more ticked off than subservient Manuel. And very good point on the servants!

Jarifa, I wondered about Paola and Manuel. I, too, came to the conclusion that she was just happy to have an ally still alive, but I guess we’ll see how it develops.

Susanlynn, I too am happy to see you and my goodness, shirtless Nava was giving me Putin flashbacks since he first took his shirt off and got on a horse. I thought it’d be too much of an obscure reference for a recap, but you made me laugh so much. Thank you for that comment.

Steve - yes, Wilson is quite dim-witted.

Anon 11:34 - yes, I suppose the point here is indeed more of a friendship loyalty, and the fact that Andrea should not have gone there.

Another great recap, Ria! At least we saw 1 vaquero at Nava's ranchette. And Susana may have crased into the woman who was killed? At least the photo of her body suggests it.

SpanProf - great thought, that is probably what has happened! Hopefully shed more light for us on that.

Also not sure why my hello in the last comment turned out to be in the middle!

Thanks, Ria. My faves:

Upstanding Carlos, who has no issue cheating on his wife, is nevertheless very upset with these two supposed friends with loose morals!

Jackpot dollar signs flash in Arcadia’s eyes.

Susanlynn, ITA I’m surprised Paola trusted Terry. Who does she think blew up her car?

I still don’t get Nava going along with the coverup. Gema is in love with Carlos. But what's Nava's excuse? Nava said something about doing it because Mexico needs Carlos as president. I don’t see it myself. But then I don’t know Carlos’s opponents.

Points to Manuel for not buying Terry’s tale. But demerits for leaving his phone at home.

Glad I can stop wondering if Paola is on the level in Colombia. She hasn’t changed a bit.

Jarifa, ditto all Diana said about why Paola freaked out about Manuel’s death.

Another master piece Tia.

That old general should go somewhere and Retire. He literally blackmailed the President. And the president being the limp Biscuit that he is folded. Maybe To protect his family from the humiliation. The children and granny. That was big Of him.
But to fire the only two people that can help him. Who took gema's place?
And he Gonna need nava to protect him
Cuz I doubt he can shoot, if it comes
To that. Why'd they make this prezz so
Image conscious. He's almost like a mannequin taking any kind of pose he has to impress upon the people hes the
President. I like the actor but don't
Much care for the character he's been playing.

Everytime I see Paola fall on to Olgas
Shoulder for comfort I think there is
Hope, but no. She only cares for Paola.

Gema should take navas advice and stay
Away from the married president.
Nava looked rather jealous watching all the family together having dinner.
The man is hooked. Paulina has come in
To his heart. I'm glad paola cut her hair, now we can tell them apart.

Thanks Ria.

Ria: I would like to buy the suicide story on Susana, but I just cannot buy it.

Susanlynn, so good to see you on the patio!
