El Dragón #36, 11/20/19: Mexican Samurai

Japan: Miguel, Peligros, and Ishiro were with Jun, who explained that the dispute between himself and Goro goes way back. A gang of ninjas stalked Tadamichi and placed a motion sensor in the woods while Jun denied killing his own right-hand man, blaming Goro for this as the pretext for a war. Miguel saw the tattoo on Jun's hand and realized he was lying, flashing back to a shooting inciident. Miguel put Jun in a deadly headlock saying he will kill him himself if he kills Tadamichi.
Tadamichi sat in a secluded house in Aoikigahara drinking tea. Ishiro, Peligros and Miguel were on their way. Multiple fights, armed and unarmed, were happening at the scene. Peligros drove Miguel who then walked through a wood and discovered the motion sensor. He took it off and stomped on it. Do There is a slo-mo swordfight bewtween Ishiro and multiple opponents, which he survives. Miguel fights; karate, sword, etc. More enemies down. [Who will clear out the bodies?]

Miguel got Tadamichi out of the house and fought with another enemy ninja, first with karate, then with a wand to ward off the sword. The opponent was defeated (perhaps not fatally), then another. Another appeared with a sword to attach Peligros, who pulled out his gun and grabbed him. Ishiro shot this one. The unharmed Peligros made a joke about the attack reminding him about crazy Mexicans defending their mothers. Tadamichi said that Goro never showed up and that this meant only one thing.

Miguel remembered his first encounter with Goro and realized the connexion between him and Jun. He had Ishiro call one of Jun's men and there was no answer. He then decided to go after them. Tadamichi stopped them. He wanted the pleasure of personally taking Goro out. All depart with their clothes perfectly intact and impeccably clean [like Bond. James Bond.]

Jun called Goro to update him. Either he did not realize that Miguel was aware of the connexion or didn't want Goro to know that he knew. Goro said they needed to maintain appearances until the next opportunity presented itself. Jun said that would be very soon.

Tadamichi's death is faked and his funeral is staged. The usual rituals are observed. Goro showed up, did the ritual, and tried playing Miguel by calling Jun a traitor and saying he would take care of it.

Two days later the Festival Sanja Matsuri took place. A Yakuza ritual was in progress in which Goro faces the more badass Tadamichi. He is forced into a ritualistic apology, then denounces Jun as a traitor.
Tadamichi gaves him one chance to redeem himself by revealing Jun's whereabouts.
Goro refused, so Tadamichi took his sword away and decapitated Goro. [I hope all those huge tattoos are fake].

Miguel went to see Jimena, who was packing to leave. She was disappointed that this trip was not a sexy vacation. He asked if he could do something to make it up to her and she said no. Room service arrived with the sushi and saki of her dreams so she forgives him and gets some nooky after all. [She has probably never seen a James Bond film, so she has no clue what typically happens to the women in his life.]

Tadamichi thanked Miguel for saving his life and said he would be in his debt forever. Miguel commented that it wasn't a total success because Jun escaped. Tadamichi told him not to worry because Jun won't get far.

Jun is served fresh fruit and death while hanging out alone on a private beach.

Tadamichi told his men that a new world is now opened to them. After they left he presented Miguel with a gift and told him that Ishiro would go to Mexico with him. Miguel told him this was not necessary, but Tadamichi said “Every time you fly higher, you need more protection.” Sayonara for now.

Mexico: Claudia got some bad news. Nothing Hector had done had come to anything and Pig's name doesn't come up on criminal records.

Ishiro accompanied Miguel and Peligros back to Mexico. Miguel introduced him to Dora, Rosario, and Jorge. Rosario arrived and was thrilled to pieces at hosting an important guest. Miguel tells him that Ishiro will be eating the same food as the family and to prepare a room for him. Adela's room is not available, so Dora seems to hope that she will return. Rosario says they have a guest room with a larger than usual bed to accommodate someone this tall ad Peligros excused himself to get to work. Rosario asked Miguel how to say something in Japanese and Miguel told hiim that Ishiro speaks Spanish. Ishiro bowed to the others before leaving the room.

Adela visited her abuela. They talked about Adela's romantic issues.

Miguel looked into Asya's camera and remembered earlier times.

Hector met with Ana; baby is with her abuelos. She wants their former life back. So does he.

Chisca bumped into Ishiro when entering. She looked very impressed with him when she saw the samurai sword he grabbed before it hit the floor. [What else could we expect from her?]

Miguel explained Ishiro to his sibs, saying that he is very disciplined. Jorge and Chisca seemed impressed at the word “samurai” while Rosario was very impressed at hearing that Ishiro is a Yakuza. Chisca talked about working in Miguel's office and asked how things went in Japan. Jorge commented that this was unusual for her to talk about. [Miguel, you were so smart in Japan, so why aren't you getting a clue now?]

In Madrid Valenin and his crony looked at Chisca's lab photos, which he will use to ultimately steal Miguel's business. His friend (Rodrigo?) had doubts because he knew that Valentin is playing three women (his wife, Chisca, and Isabel), so could he trust him? His friendship with Miguel is considered expendable.

Dora updated Miguel about Coyote. They had never seen this coming. She is concerned about how this will affect the future. [I also don't get the impression that she knows enough about the samurai instruction he got in Japan].

At the office Miguel and his info team plan the next move against Pig. Jimena is a key player in this. She was to meet him at Romano's.

Chisca got to escort Ishiro to Romano's to case it. He did not look comfortable with her, but she didn't seem to notice this.

At the office Miguel asked Adela to return to his home. She refused. He was trying to friend-one her and she refused because she is in love with him. This, therefore, didn't work for her. He did not press the issue. She work-zoned him, then dismissed him because she was busy.
Tacho found a ringing cell phone in a drawer at Pig's hideout from a glass office. Jimena was calling to make an appointment with Pig. Nine PM at Romano's.

Tacho drove Pig to the meeting. Pig didn't want him inside because of the sort of place it is. [This is likely to come back and bite him on the ham]. It looked like they were seated in a private party room; there were no other people in it. She told him that Miguel had used her and was proposing a deal. She excused herself to go to the loo. Pig summoned a waiter and requested their best bottle of tequila.

Pilar and Kenia “broke up.” Pilar told her never to tell Jorge the truth because it would afect his opinion of her. [Which means that whatever it is will soon be known].

Pig waited a long time for Jimena, noticing that other customers were leaving. He then went looking for her. He tried the ladies' room, but it was empty. He walked out and the restaurant was empty. She was gone. Flaco checked a cell phone signal Pig took out his weapon and when he doesn't find her and sees that the place is empty he realize he had been set up.
Ishiro caught up with him, shoved him through the door to the wine cellar and locked the gate.
Miguel appeared and showed him something. “You have something else for us to find?”

I had to rewatch because the buffering problem was bad last night. That makes you miss too much.

Kudos to the composer(s) of the soundtrack. It's so James Bond, as are other elements of this story.

Most of the Japanese characters are played by Mexican actors with a special mention of Victor Alfredo Jimenez, who nails it perfectly. In fact, he's been typecast as Asian.

Who knew Tad was a babe...Sexy, actually...Loved when he showed up with all his righteous indignation and called out Goro.Beautiful ceremony...Did some research from past novellas. Ishiro is played Alex Duran. We saw him as “Norman” in La Bella y las . Bestias. He played El Castors right hand man..... And we also saw El Castro as the bad cop in Sien Miedo al la Thank you for recapping this violent episode......Could there be a wedding for a reformed Chisca with ishiro? How many more episodes till we saw the proverbial anvil come down on Chiscass?

Thanks UA. Though he doesn't appeal to me, Lurch / Ishiro is a helluva fighter. Women (and Pseudo-women like Rosy) sure like the strong silent type. I suppose it actually makes sense, that way you are not both talking at once. :-)

Yeah, Norman. I didn't remember him being seven feet tall though. I liked the way Tadamichi 'gave' him to Miggy without even as much as a grunt or bow from Isid. Like picking out the cutest puppy and giving it to your bestie.

Does Jimenema not realize that with her shenanigans on behalf of Miggy she can now never lead a normal life in Mexico? This is relevant in light of the fact that Miggy has shown her that she is scarcely one notch above disposable to him.

How are we expected to believe the night and day change in Chiscass? (Thanks Anon) Straight as an arrow and clear headed and interested in really getting involved in the company? Overnight? Where are her party friends who were probably hangers-ons letting Chiscass pay for the parties? They should be knocking down the doors looking for her and bombing her phone.

Good for you Adela, 'Love me or leave me the fork alone.' Stick to it. Do SOMETHING with that hair and you can find yourself a nice guy.

Isihiro would need to become a little more mellow and Chisca would need to have some self-discipline of which she has none.
What she has is Hot Pants Syndrome, meaning she can't take them off fast enough. I don't see this changing anytime at all.

Thanks, Urban. Double duty and double trouble on both major prime time fronts. You rock. Well, someone else is the rock, you are the rushing river of words.

I was all confused by who was who in the Japanese line-up. Thanks Anon. I have it straight now. Ishiro is Lurch and Tadamichi is a Mexican actor with a Spanish name, with Asian antecedents. No wonder he is typecast and I was confused.

I didn't need the tattooed chests, regardless of the symbolism (nor the loincloths).

Chisca has gone turkey in order to do NotVal's bidding. She's only acting enthusiastic about the business. Her closest relatives should be skeptical, but as we know, family members are always the last to know the whys in behavior changes.

Urban--Hot Pants Syndrome. This belongs in our Ay Caray, Did I say that?

Thanks, Urban. My fave: All depart with their clothes perfectly intact and impeccably clean [like Bond. James Bond.]

I would love to see outtakes of how they created all those body tattoos.

I liked the way Tadamichi 'gave' him to Miggy without even as much as a grunt or bow from Isid. Like picking out the cutest puppy and giving it to your bestie.

Kirby, ITA. The Ishiro actor played this scene well. His stoic face gave just the faintest hint that he was surprised and sad that Tadamichi transferred him to Mig. There is something about Ishiro. I don’t know if they’ll give us a backstory on him, but I’m thinking he’s playing mixed-race Japanese.

Could there be a wedding for a reformed Chisca with Ishiro? How many more episodes till we saw the proverbial anvil come down on Chiscass?

Anon@11:19, Say it isn't so! I don’t want to see Chisca’s grimey paws on that sweet Ishiro. I don’t care how reformed she might become if she ever gets smart about Val.

What will Pig do to Jimena? He seems to have ADD when it comes to her. He threatened her back when she wouldn't take money to betray Mig, but he never did a thing.

Anita, the loincloths. I kept wondering if the actors were getting cold out there.

Oh, I bet they were freezing.

The actor playing Ishiro definitely looks Eurasian. I am under the impression that this is like the Italian Mafia, which wants its members to be 100% Sicilian. Could he be ousted for not being 100% Japanese?

Well, I think his silence would drive Chisca nuts after a while but how much difference does that make; she is nuts.

Urban

First, thank you for such a fantastic recap and gorgeous screenshots. You did a top-notch job as always. I don't know where you get the energy. Also, your links were helpful, I thought the whole Japanese mob name was made up.

Victor Alfredo Jimenez is one handsome dude....

Sorry I'm posting this so late. That was an ABSOLUTELY AWESOME episode (minus all the body tattoos and loincloths). One of the best episodes yet. Boy, the martial arts fighting was exciting!. The camera crew did a tremendous job with those scenes.

If I were to list all the enemies of Miguel, the top one on my list of the most despicable ones would be Valentin.
I want to throw up when he appears. Again, Miguel is one stupid dude and can't read people at all.

It's going to be fun to see the interaction between Rosario and Ishiro. Is Ishiro wearing makeup?

Somehow, Peligros is growing on me.....

I think Victor Alfredo Jimenez is awesome. He looks wonderful aged-up and he nails the accent beautifully. I'm guessing t hat he studied at least one Asian language during his career.

Marcel Buquet (Rosario) looks like he's having a good time with this character. He's very versatile and I hope we see more of him in future series.

As to the links...

I've heard of the Yakuza before and they sound like a scary lot. It was fear of them that prevented people from doing anything to save Junko Furuta from a truly horrible fate. Google that only if you have a very strong stomach.

I agree that Valentin is the worst. There is nothing worse than betrayal by someone you value and think you can trust.
