HIJAS - IT’S BOXING DAY IN CANADA, the UK, and ALSO FOR JUANA BÁRBARA

*The usual disclaimers apply again today. Meh . . .
The plot was not advanced at all.
Dario had the day off.
Petunia sighting!
The recrap itself has six paragraphs instead of six lines, so there is that. I gave myself an 'A' for effort.
;-)

Juana Bárbara wins her boxing match today. Ines is afraid Barbi will win the whole tournament and she (Ines) will have to give up Mau. She writes Barbi a note, asking her to forget the promise/bet. Barbi’s answer is a big. fat. NOOOOooooo!!!!! High drama, folks. Yawn.

Fernando asks Vicki what is going on between her and Sebastian. Vic says she is trying to convince Seb to go back to Stefi and marry her, so that his economic woes will be over. In a moment of complete madness, Vicki sees Seb walking by, so she grabs Fernando and plants a big ole beso on his mouth. Ruh-roh….rubble. Fernando is emocionada, animada, enamorada, on Cloud nine, and my spellcheck is freaking out. He even “Te Amo”ed her. Oh noes!

Vic tells Teresa (about the kiss), who asks her WHAT? ARE YOU CRAZY? As she talks through it, Teresa thinks it would be a good idea for Vic to set her sights on Fernando as a means to get away from Sebastian and all her drama. So,,,, Teresa is totally on team Fernando. Whatevs. Me da igual.

Leo announces to Juan-O that she does not need a new wardrobe, after all. She needs a prepaid funeral package. She is gonna die and likely pronto. Leo’s scenes are, again, the best one in this capitulo aburrido. She uses this “dying campaign” to guilt Sebastian. Stefi later comes over to coach her while she is practicing in the mirror, putting dark circles under her eyes with makeup, etc. Stefi is wearing a very perky black & white striped mummy wrap type crop top. I don’t know how to describe it, but she wears it well. The male viewers might appreciate it. Crockpot Theory© that at some point, Leo’s fake health drama will bite her in the rear and turn into The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

Ines and Sol have girl talk. Ines is worried that if she does not put out, Mauricio will dump her. Sol assures her that if he does, he was not worth having as a boyfriend. Inés is worried that she may never have …. the desire….to….you know. Darn that convent upbringing! Sol keeps reassuring her. She will give up her V-card when she is ready and doesn’t have to do it a moment before, or STTE. I'm not sure exactly what they were saying, but that is the gist of it all. Seriously, does Ines even have an idea of what is involved? Do they need to have …. dun...dun...DUN! ... "The Talk"? Given the imposed Austerity Plan and bankrupt state of the Amoeba Clan v2, protection costs money they don’t have. Just as well her celibacy is a thing, for now.

Oh... and Sebastian got a job working with the extracurricular activities dept. of a local hotel, teaching scuba diving, swimming pool volleyball, and how to eject some jerk guy from the pool and throw a punch. Yay Seb!

The end.

VOCABULARIO --- because that’s why we watch. Right?

“grueso” – thick (we all know this word but maybe I will remember it, one day)
“rete---“ as a prefix --- Very; extremely
“desbarajuste”--- mess, e.g., this telenovela is one hot desbarajuste

OT --

THE POWER OF THE MARIACHI BAND SERENADE

I pop in and read this guy's blog posts from time to time. (the Xmas ones this week are really touching, but I digress...)

Earlier this week, he has a cute on on the power of a mariachi band serenade. It's a nice read (copy & paste into your browser) if you have a few minutes:

https://seandietrich.com/the-little-miracle/

Enjoy. :-)

Doris interesting recap. The episode was........it was.
How many more Episodes are there? We
Really need to be put out of our their
Misery. Before 2020 comes in, but we
Probly won't be.

I really have nothing to say about this episode.

Did yall have a nice christmas? I did.
Doris thank you for your efforts with
This episode. This show is dying.

HAPPY NEW YEAR YALL!

Doris, thank you for soldiering on through the silly nothing there of this show. I was so looking forward to be show by the seaside, but ...

OF ..Enjoy your belated Christmas with your grandgirl. All 4 of my granddaughters had a grand day. Lots of smiling faces in all the photos taken yesterday.

OT...judy...if you are here, please know that I am thinking of you and yours.

HIJAS

Yikes DORIS, you got two absolute stinkers of episodes but you made them funny and interesting with the way you wrote about them. So an A plus to you and many thanks. I agree that Leonora's fake illness and Estefania's amaaaaazing outfit were the two highlights. Everything else (other than dear Petu) absolute low lights. Juana Victora continues to overact and over emote and even madrina Teresa is beginning to irritate me. Ditto for Margarita. Just. Dial. It. Back. Ladies.

And thanks so much for "desbarajuste" and your hilarious definition. When Teresa said it, I thought "must write this down". But pretty wiped out after Christmas. The spirit was willing but the flesh said fuhgeddaboutit.

OT

SUSANLYNN...Thanks so much for thinking of me. I feel lots of support and lots of prayers coming from this group and it helps. Things are pretty dark and sad right now but I feel the warmth of caring friends and that makes a difference. I'm the type of person who wants to wrap the whole world in swaddling clothes and not have anything sad or hurtful happen. But Life is not that way. So I have to pray that people who are hurt will grow stronger and wiser as they deal with that pain.

(((((judy)))))....eventually everyone gets knocked down by life....unavoidable. It helps to know that others care and support you. Caray is a safe haven for many caring souls . I took a walk in a local park with my best friend today. I hope you get some solace amidst whatever is happening in your orbit.

HIJAS

Doris, thank you for your great six paragraph recap. I definitely give you an "A" and not just for effort. It was a great, fun read, and a great title to boot! I had forgotten about boxing day. So much so that I had to go to Wikipedia to refresh my memory as to what the Brits do on Boxing Day.

I saw bits of today's show as I was getting ready to leave, and it's "in the can", so I could watch the whole show if I wanted.
I don't think I will   :-)

Juana Ines is kinda cute, though annoying; still, I'm beginning to find her funny enough to bother caring about.
Juana Barbara should become a surgeon or a surgical nurse and wear a cap and scrubs or a surgical gown all the time; or don't bother with a career change, just wear a cap and scrubs or a surgical gown all the time.
Or a bathrobe and keep her hair wrapped in a towel. Or maybe just stop scowling so much.

Stefi was cute in a few scenes. "Stefi is wearing a very perky black & white striped mummy wrap type crop top. I don’t know how to describe it, but she wears it well. The male viewers might appreciate it."
It was nice, and we got to see some cleavage, always a plus, but if I had been watching the whole show I still would have had to throw some cold water on my face from time to time to keep from falling asleep.

All said and done, it's still Leonora and Petunia way ahead of the competition.

Doris, thanks again,

andy

HIJAS

Doris, you definitely get an A+; and as Andy stated not just for effort, but for coming up with a very enjoyable recrap. I've already gotten used to the idea that this show is someone's poor excuse of slapstick; but I tune in just to see Petunia and whatever Leo is wearing....and that infamous smile that makes me weak in the knees (y'all know who I'm talking about :-)

Lots to do today, so y'all have a great day. Judy, you're still in my thoughts and prayers.

HIJAS

"Vicki sees Seb walking by, so she grabs Fernando and plants a big ole beso on his mouth. Ruh-roh….rubble. Fernando is emocionada, animada, enamorada, on Cloud nine, and my spellcheck is freaking out. He even “Te Amo”ed her. Oh noes!" Fabulous.

Doris, you are one talented lady. You condensed and the result was everything you needed to know.

“desbarajuste”--- mess, e.g., this telenovela is one hot desbarajuste" was of course my favorite.

andy, I miss your recaps...

Judy, sending love and prayers...

doris, thank you so much!

Diana

Judy I came late to the patio, so I dont know what happened and I don't have to but I got a saviour that does
So I will pray that whatever or who ever is causing hurt will be taken care off and it will be solved. And here's a bigO loving hug ((((Judy)))))
Just for you lovely lady.♡♡◇♡♡♡
May the force of love and strength be
With you and yours.

Hopefully todays episode will be better than yesterday. Now who does
Jaunabarb think she is tryin to take her sisters man? Ines better fight for him if she wants to keep him. Why don't barb get with her nice trainer anyway? And what did Mauricio'supposed
Dad threaten him with?

Ok on to the next episode.

OR

Oh NINA, I love what you said..."so I don't know what happened and I don't have to but I got a savior that does". That is just beautiful. And it's not something I have talked about except to say that my family is in great pain right now. That is all I can say. No details. But it comforts me to have this warm Patio's support through all this. You guys are the best.

HIJAS #51 WAY TOO MUCH CRYING, WAY TOO MUCH LYING or
THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!

Part 1

Take your pick of the title, or come up with another one. This is a creative group.

But man!, that actress they picked to play the professional Russian boxer was the scariest woman I've ever seen. Her black tooth guard didn't help. Juana Barbara took a licking, but kept on ticking, and Leonora and Estefania's plan seems to be working. Sebastian has caved and suggested they "try to build their love once more" and Steff answered by leaping on him like white on rice.

There, compañeros, is the Recap in Six Lines, like our good Doris threatened to do.

But duty calls and I'll fill in a few more details. Not to a great extent, though, as it was just the usual nonsense recycled.

We begin with Stupid Vicky-Seb Fight Number 345. Although Sebastian for some reason thinks it's only their second. Suffice it to say Vicky pretends she's going out with Fernando now and Seb is disillusioned, and wounded. Later, Vicky is doing her usual tousled Wah Wah Wah in the bedroom she shares with Teresa. 'Nuff said.

Juana Inés, who is showing an amazing penchant and aptitude for lying since she's left the convent, is attempting to sic Juana Barbara on her trainer Raymundo. Pretending she let slip a big secret, she tells her Ray has the hots for her. Makes no difference. Barb still wants Mauricio. And she's gonna get 'im!

Leonora, meanwhile, is working her Dying Swan moves very effectively. She wanly waves off any help from Sebastian, gasping out that she only wants Steffi in attendance. And Steff, all noble and gorgeous, vows to care for her Day and Night, while sparkling and twinkling in Sebastian's direction. He mostly just looks distracted and annoyed, but the gals are undeterred. They're having too much fun running this con game.

When Papi Juan hears the latest from Seb, he avers that Estefania is an incredible girl. And notes that Leonora practically adopted her after Steffi's mom died. Whoa! looks like everything is conspiring to drive Sebastian back into Estefania's well-financed arms.

Brief scene of Xavier and Margarita oceanside. She's scared of the water because she doesn't know how to swim. He leads her out and helps her conquer her fear. Big hug and "Now I feel safe!" from Margarita. Sorry. Just not interested in this incipient romance at all. Calling on Señorita FFWD!

Dario, back in another Sad Plaid sports jacket is planning his latest low blow. How about bringing in a professional, dirty boxer who's already won 54 times to make sure Barb doesn't get those 200thousand pesos. Money talks so get me in touch with the guy who organized this fight. I want to make sure the Oropezas are still in desperate straits financially.

HIJAS #51 WAY TOO MUCH CRYING, WAY TOO MUCH LYING or
THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!

Part 2

Leo is looking more and more like she's close to meeting her Maker. Food is left untouched on the tray (though later we see Leo chomping down on a chicken leg and sharing it with Petunia), pills are left untouched, barely audible words seep out in a gasping breath. She's pretty much Meryl Streep in Hospice Care and it's getting to Sebastian. Weakly trying to summon the energy, she takes Steff and Sebastian's hands, places them together, pats them gently, and then closes her eyes, exhausted by the effort. Honestly, my gal Meryl could not have done better.

Elsewhere, Vicky is wriggling out of her date with Fernando, thanks to Teresa's intervention. Excuse: She's not feeling well--"cosas de mujeres". Like any good red-blooded guy, Fernando doesn't want to know a thing more.

We see the progression of Leonora's gradual descent into the relentless jaws of death by the change in Steffi's clothing. At least four angst-filled days have gone by--Seb even tries spoon-feeding mom to no avail-- and it's time to call the doctor, or the priest, or a shaman. Finally, desperate, Sebastian asks "WHAT can I do?" "The one thing you could do, you haven't done," gasps Leo.

Later though, when Dario shows up, worried and distraught, the gals laugh their heads off and confess the whole scheme--a little more work and Steffi and Sebastian will be novios once again. He's delighted.

But other lives go on. Barb has won her next two fights and she's ready for the grand finale and possible prize. Soledad, who's heard about the bet, is chastising both Barb and Inés for "betting people rather than money" but nobody listens. And now the fight is about to begin. The Russian Feodora Kutznetzoff, masquerading as amateur Irina la asesina, steps into the ring and glares at Barb. Who glares back. They trade punches pretty effectively, but in a clinch, Irina draws back and head butts Barb, knocking her out. The ref starts the count and we're all verklempt worrying that Barb is down and out for good.

Oh get hold of yourself! She's fine.

HIJAS #51 WAY TOO MUCH CRYING, WAY TOO MUCH LYING or
THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!

Part 3

Over the edge now, viewing his mother's growing weakness, Sebastian turns to Estefania and asks if she's open to being engaged again. She answers....Nothing. That's right. Zip. Silence. Finally, though she says, this is neither the time nor the place to think about that. Our priority right now should be your mom. Go. Go support your sister in her boxing match. We'll talk later.

As soon as he's out the door, Leo is sputtering in indignation. It worked! What the heck are you doing? Well, Steff, in a rather late attack of conscience, doesn't want to get back with Seb if he's only doing it because of Mom's supposed depression.

Leo has an answer for THAT nonsense. Look, I had an employee once, who was rather "colorful" and she always said "Primero compras el chango, después le enseñas a bailar." [First you buy the monkey, then you teach him to dance.]

Steffi looks as flummoxed as we do. So Leonora explains--"Rope him in first, girl, then you can work on him to fall in love again. He was in love with you once, you can do it again." Well, not exactly words of wisdom from Mother Teresa, but pretty savvy advice from Mother Leonora. Could work. Especially as Vicky is such an idiot.

Back to the boxing ring: Raymundo, who's smarter than he looks, overhears the trainers talking to the Russki and thinks he heard the word Feodora (or Teodora..the closed captions are confusing). Anyway he asks Todoelmundo to see if he can look her up and sure enough he finds out she's that professional, dirty boxer who's been suspended numerous times. But has a ton of knockouts. She's beating up on Barb pretty good but Raymundo calls the fight. It's a fraud. All hell breaks loose as Margarita jumps into the ring, trying to pummel the Russian, and pretty soon the whole Juana Pack Plus is in there, slinging punches and causing mayhem. A lot like a bar fight but without the booze. Just to make sure we know the scene is hilariously funny, lively accordion music pipes away on the soundtrack.

HIJAS #51 WAY TOO MUCH CRYING, WAY TOO MUCH LYING or
THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!

Part 4

Okay. I hurt from laughing so hard. Well, no. But it was mildly amusing. Next day though, not so much. Juana Barbara is in the fight organizer's office demanding her pay. Because after all, in the midst of that melee, she did indeed knock out the Dirty Russian. Organizer is not impressed. Your trainer called the fight. I'm not going to give you one single centavo. Ray threatens to report him to the National Federation of Boxing and he just laughs. Dario wins again. And as he chats with Henchie Ricardo afterwards, he's reassured that nobody will ever find out Daddy Dario was behind the dirty dealings. And the Oropezas will remain in dire financial straits, heh heh.

Sebastian is floating his idea to marry Steff with old Tio Xavier. Who doles out the usual pap--you're broken-hearted over Juana Victoria. But Time heals all wounds. But on the other hand, are you just "using" Estefania?...as a way of pulling your mom out of her depression.

Seb admits that yeah, maybe that's his strategy. But his love life sucks right now. And rather than try and date someone new, why not go back with Steffi? He KNOWS her. And she's a good person.

Juan, bearing a big bouquet, comes in to give Leonora the good news--our kids are engaged again! Leo leaps out of bed like a gazelle, startling Sebastian, promises to take her pills forthwith--but, er, I'm feeling weak again. Leave me alone, I need to rest. But yes, I'll take my medication.

That's upstairs. Downstairs we've got other things going on. Fernando is wondering what happened to the sudden passion Vicky displayed for him. Seems like she not only put on the brakes, she backed up a mile or two. What gives? Because his heart is hers--he admires her, he digs her, he loves her, he dreams of being with her. His love is overwhelming. Vicky smiles enigmatically and says nothing.

And a very unhappy Barb, bruised and beaten, with not a single centavo to show for it, is enveloped in a sisterly group hug as she weeps and wails and gnashing her teeth over the injustice.

And on that upbeat note, we end.

But see, we really could have done it in six lines. Just sayin'.

HIJAS

JudyB, thank you for this excellent recap... BUT I have to admit that I'm also a bit annoyed with you.

I caught a few parts of today's show while I was doing other things. Very early in the show J.Vicky is on her side, in the bed, and crying her heart out.
I saw that and I just burst out laughing. Then I caught myself and had to ask, why am I laughing at some woman's crying like this?

Because we've seen it before so many times and it's become silly. I started thinking about this show, and how it's not exactly terrible, but it's a great waste of time with very little to nothing gained from it.

So I thought I could stop bothering with the show, totally and completely. Claw back some hours that I would otherwise lose and never get back.
But now I read your recap, and the show sounds somewhat interesting, and so I have a dilemma to deal with.

Meh. Thanks.

:-)

andy

HIJAS

I love the title, Judy, and thank you for your more than 6 lines recap! You did this episode more justice than it probably deserved, and since I had no time to watch it, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

My favorites:

”Juana Inés, who is showing an amazing penchant and aptitude for lying since she's left the convent…”
Isn’t that the truth! Downright shocking.

”. . . into Estefania's well-financed arms.”
Perfect!

”Just not interested in this incipient romance at all.”
You say incipient, I say insipid. ;-) You say tomah-to, I say tomay-to. Let's call the whole thing off.

… and the best line that takes the cake:
”She's pretty much Meryl Streep in Hospice Care . . . ”
And really, Patio, why hasn’t a doctor been called in for a house call? Does Juan-O see through this ruse? Does anyone really care?

”And rather than try and date someone new, why not go back with Steffi? “
Seb is such a lazy ... um ... loser. Ugh. This guy is no prize.

HIJAS

andy - LOL!!!

HIJAS

Good morning ANDY and DORIS. Gosh, ANDY, so sorry you've been lured back into the sticky spiderweb of the very silly Hijas. But they say a certain amount of "down time" is important, so maybe you can pigeonhole this bit of fluff as a time to rest your brain. And then again, there is always the Spanish, amigo! always the Spanish! Plus, I was hoping, since we all love your recaps, that you might be interested in joining "our team". We need the male perspective on the action. Think about it. Doris and I would be thrilled.

And DORIS, thanks for that careful reading and noting of the recap after what was I'm sure a long night of celebrating Christmas and making some new memories with your son and granddaughter. It's hard to have our families split and our grandchildren at a distance, but we manage as best we can and keep the connection in our hearts always.

HIJAS

Judy, you have outdone yourself. Pure and simple. I had to pare down my list of favorites, every sentence was bursting at the seams full of wisdom, wit and humor.

"But man!, that actress they picked to play the professional Russian boxer was the scariest woman I've ever seen. Her black tooth guard didn't help" made me feel great relief I missed it. However, "...later we see Leo chomping down on a chicken leg and sharing it with Petunia" actually made me sorry I didn't see this.

"Steff, all noble and gorgeous, vows to care for her Day and Night, while sparkling and twinkling in Sebastian's direction". Seems his goose is cooked! Still from what I'm reading, Steffi seems to have a heart and has already admitted this is not how she wants to get her man.

Love "sad plaid". Just because...

The little patio that could...An amazing job. I'm not going to get my hopes up that andy might be joining you. But, that would be amazing.

Judy, no doubt you are the champ here. Gracias!

Diana

Regrets that real life became very hectic and I stayed away from the patio. I saw a few episodes (and parts of episodes) lately. Looks like things are much the same on the screen.
Thanks to all who keep this site alive with recaps and comments. I hope your holidays, especially Christmas, were wonderful and hoping for a good New Year for everyone.

JUDYB re: HIJAS

Looking at my cable TV guide, there are no episodes next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. I know, I know, collective sob all around. LOL
I can help out with a recap but do not know what my grandma babysitting schedule will look like yet. As soon as our son sorts out his work schedule, I will let you know.

That's great DORIS. Babysitting schedule comes first though. Always! This granny understands.

JudyB -- Friday will be my free day next week, so I can recap then.

My Wednesday is free, too, but the Juana Pack & Co. have that day off. We are so blessed.

Greetings, Little Patio That Could :-)

Thank you so much, Judy! Your humor and wit have not flailed despite the darkness that has cast its shadow on your family. I SO look forward to reading your recaps since I know I will "jingle all the way" :-)

THough Doris and Diana have already pointed out some of the outstanding lines, here they are again plus more because they are that good--

" that actress they picked to play the professional Russian boxer was the scariest woman I've ever seen. Her black tooth guard didn't help. " hideous looking woman! I would have probably thrown in the towel when I first saw her.

" that actress they picked to play the professional Russian boxer was the scariest woman I've ever seen. Her black tooth guard didn't help.

"Later, Vicky is doing her usual tousled Wah Wah Wah in the bedroom she shares with Teresa. 'Nuff said." THis chick must be bi-polar; she goes from sickeningly happy to morose faster than you can flip a coin.

"She's pretty much Meryl Streep in Hospice Care and it's getting to Sebastian." and "Leo leaps out of bed like a gazelle, startling Sebastian, promises to take her pills forthwith--but, er, I'm feeling weak again." I have to marvel at your uncanny ability to come up with such a creative descriptions.

Doris, ""Just not interested in this incipient romance at all.”
You say incipient, I say insipid. ;-) You say tomah-to, I say tomay-to. Let's call the whole thing off." Can we please...please, please, pleeease? AND "there are no episodes next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. I know, I know, collective sob all around." Box(es) of tissues coming around :-)

OT...went to see " Little Women" today with my daughter. ..best movie I have seen in a long time. Excellent in every way.

OT

Susanlynn - a friend of mine also saw it this weekend and she loved it.

HIJAS
JudyB--Back home and raring to go (NOT). Thanks to you and Doris, I was able to delete all the saved episodes of Hijas and relied solely on the recaps. What a delightful read. It almost makes the story sound lively and convincing. If it weren't for Leo and Petunia taking center stage this would have been unwatchable (well, Danilo is the exception).

MANANA
Andy, I didn't have the opportunity to comment on the last two episodes of Manana. I admit to having FF>> through a lot, thanks to your wonderful recap substituting for the visuals. You do have a magic touch with words and I hope you supply us with many more.

Excusez Moi--I made a big boo-boo attributing Hijas to Carlos Moreno Laguillo when it should have been Manana. Hopefully, no one saw it. Still, my sentiments are still a propos--"I said it before and will say it again--this was produced by Carlos Moreno Laguillo, who gave us the likes of Bajo la Misma Piel, En Nombre del Amor, Cuando me Enamoro, Amor Bravio and Mujeres de Negro, top quality shows in every aspect. He certainly let the reins slip on this one." Thank goodness Andy pulled it out of a hat for us to enjoy the recaps.
