Alex comes to see his grandfather at Ramiro's workshop."I'm your grandson," he tells Ramiro. Ramiro responds, "I don't have a grandson. I have a precious granddaughter." Ramiro finally says, "I love you. But please don't ask me to understand. It's as if they killed my granddaughter, and the dead can't be replaced."
Reme and Alex are lying next to each other talking about life. Suddenly they hear a noise. They go to see whether someone is there. A large square box or brick breaks the window as it comes into the house. On it are written the words "gay" and "freak." Max runs outside with a baseball bat, intending to confront whoever did this, but the thugs have left.
Martín is still quite unhappy about his father's relationship with Gloria. Plutarco suggests that next weekend they can do some more fun things. Martín thinks that would be great, if it's just the three of them (Martín, Dani, and Plutarco--not Gloria)
Luis is ecstatic: Jimena and Aurora have told him they will accept his proposal to live together polygamously. Of course, they tell him, there are rules: The children stay out of this. And you're not going to live here. [There were more, but I didn't catch what they were.] All this is fine with Luis, or so he thinks.
Reme and Alex come to Connie's and tell her about the brick through their window. They show her the brick. She's horrified and assures them that they're welcome to stay with her for as long as they'd like.
Pablo tells José Miguel that Fernando has gone back to live with his ex-wife. JM seems delighted and says "Let's go dancing." Pablo doesn't feel like it. JM kisses Pablo, but Pablo pushes him away. "I have a novio," he tells JM. "A novio who is not here," replies JM. [Every time I see JM, I keep thinking that he's covered in oil. Perhaps because he seems slippery, slimy.]
Luis announces to Emiliano and Plutarco that "my two women have agreed to go back with me." Needless to say, E and P are astonished. Luis continues, "My kids don't know. Thus, I'll have to continue to live with you."
Mónica tells Alex to be patient. Old people find it harder to change. "It took me hard work to accept Pablo. But now we're very close (uña y mugre). Things will work out."
Emiliano comes to Reme's house and finds Max fixing a window. "Are you redecorating?" Emiliano asks. Max tells him what happened with the brick through the window. Emiliano is furious that Max didn't immediately tell him.
Pablo and JM are together at Pablo's in the morning. Fernando calls, but Pablo doesn't answer the phone. He's clearly uncomfortable.
Emiliano charges into the diner. "Why didn't you tell me?" he asks Reme in a very loud voice."I want to protect you." Max is there, too, and he learns that Emiliano has given Reme the keys to his house. Now both men are yelling at Reme. When is she going to make up her mind? [Apparently her seeming decisiveness in the previous episode, where she tells Emiliano that she wants to be with him and that she will divorce Max, didn't last. Why am I not surprised?]
Luis learns that there are more rules he must follow. Jimena informs him that he needs to buy some special foods, Kobe beef for Jimena, lobster for Aurora, and on and on. He complains that it will use up all his salary [so he's still got a job??]. She sweetens the rule by promising that she and Aurora will be in baby doll nightgowns. Off he goes to buy the required foods.
Mónica comes to see Ramiro. She tells him about the brick through the window. She also tells him that Ale needs him.
At the high school, Lucia sees Dani and asks how Alex is. Dani responds that he's shaken but OK, and then adds, "If you care so much, why don't you go to see him?" Lucia asks Dani to try to put himself in her place: suppose that you're going with Mariana, and then suddenly one day she tells you she's a man.
Reme tells the school principal what happened, and explains that that's why Alex is not in school today. The principal says that "if it happens again, I'll have to suspend her." Reme says, "if it happens again, you'll have to suspend him." [I'm not sure whether the principal is talking about Alex's absence or about the fight with Benjamin--I suspect it's the latter. Surely being absent from school for a few days wouldn't call for suspension.] At any rate, it seems apparent that the principal is not going to be supportive of Alex.
Plutarco asks Connie, who is now his boss, about matters such as salary, health benefits, and whether she can fire him. He tells her that if she tries to fire him, he'll sue for unjustified dismissal.
Ramiro comes to see Alex at Connie's. He urges Alex to show the world that he's not afraid. He also says that he's coming back to live at the house. Alex asks him whether it bothers him that he'll be living in the same house with a trans person. No, says Ramiro, I love you.
Luis comes back to the house lugging a large number of very large bags filled with the items Jimena asked for. Both Jimena and Aurora are in baby doll nightgowns. He's thrilled. They're rolling their eyes behind his back.
Ramiro comes to see Reme at the diner. He tells her that he's moving back to the house, he wants them all to be together. "Did you speak to Alex?" Reme asks. "I spoke to Ale," he replies. "She agreed that she wants us all together."
Fernando comes to see Pablo. He tells Pablo that he tried several times to call him, but he didn't answer. Fernando was worried. Suddenly José Miguel appears coming down the stairs shirtless. Fernando says, "Now I see why you didn't answer my calls. You said that you and JM were now just friends. This is not going to work, Pablo. I hope you'll be happy. Adios."
Emiliano tries to find ways of being with Alex that Alex will enjoy. He offers to show him how to drive a motorcycle. Alex's eyes light up. Emiliano gives him the keys and suggests they go for a short ride. They both put on helmets, Emi points to a few controls, and off they go. [OK OK, I guess I'm getting old. I was appalled. This spur of the moment drive seemed much too dangerous. Both of them could have been hurt had Alex lost control of the moto.]
Plutarco and Connie are working together on the divorce case of the wife of the rich CEO (their name escape me at the moment--Quintero?). Plutarco sees similarities between the wife's case and Gloria's divorce case five years ago. I think Connie looks at a video of the interview made at that time with Gloria, who says that the only thing she regrets is that she didn't have a child with her soon-to-be ex. In the interview, Connie asks whether a child would have solved their problems. Gloria says "a child is everything. But anyway, we'll never know" (nunca lo sabremos). Connie then thinks about the current situation, glances at Plutarco in the other office, and wonders, "¿quiere un hijo?" I assume she's asking herself whether Gloria still wants to have a child--with Plutarco. End of episode.
Thanks so much, Juanita. Haven't been near a computer until just now and I wanted to thank you and to comment.
I was furious at both Max and Emiliano. But then I keep forgetting that workplaces in TNs aren't anything like actual jobs. Reme has been doing well in her new job of managing the diner and these two guys are yelling in her face while she's at work like two bighorn sheep. But then, she should have told Max her plan.
I suspect that Marta, the principal's, reluctance is probably related to knowing that Benjamin is behind the attack. It was brought to her attention before in the big meeting where bullying was discussed. But Benjamin has rich parents.
I'm sorry if I'm revealing something that was in a preview, but I can't remember when I saw it. Anyway, at the end, disgusting Luis is glorying in the threesome he's about to enjoy when Aurora gives him what looks like a shot of tequila. He's immediately knocked out cold.
More irrational telenovela plot devices. Pablo is presented as a kind, understanding man. Yet, when Fernando moves in temporarily to comfort Isabel while she gets the diagnosis of, I think, her lumpectomy to see if the lump was benign or cancerous, he gets jealous and jumps into bed with the (thanks, Juanita) oily José Miguel.
By the way, SpanProf, good point about a needle biopsy being the more likely first step when a lump is discovered. That was how I was treated for a lump my fabulous internist found during my annual physical. It turned out to be cancerous and I received radiation treatment in 1997. I get a mammogram each year and all is still fine in that regard.
So, they just left those huge bags of perishables in the entryway while they rushed on for the threesome.
They didn't have the reveal about Roger making that phone call about a possible scoop about the prominent couple getting divorced. More TN stuff that isn't logical. Why would the same journalist doing a report on conditions in detention centers also be the gossip reporter.
Sorry to be so late to the party. This week has been crazy (and last week wasn't any better). I did get near my computer earlier, but only to deal with problems that had arisen.
SpanProf and novelera, you both find fault with Pablo. What's not clear to me is whether he knew why Fer had moved in with Isabel. If he did, then I definitely agree with you. But if not, I'd regard it as a typical telenovela misunderstanding: it looks to Pablo as if Fer is going back to Isabel and choosing her over him.
novelera, it frankly never occurred to me that Marta was concerned about angering Bratty Benjamin's wealthy parents, but you may well be right.
Well, it's almost time for the novela here on the West Coast. Looking forward to your recap, novelera.
Parte 1 de 2
Alex comes out of his house in the morning to find about a dozen classmates applauding him. They’ve put colored stones on the sidewalk spelling out: “We are with you”.
Luis wakes up. Both women are fully dressed and assure him that he slept long enough for them to get bored. They give some broad hints that they got busy with each other and thus they’re too tired for him. He asked if they took a video [¡sinvergüenza!] and they say he still needs to prove himself before he can see it.
We also find out that Aurora is doing the cooking and cleaning.
Lucía and Alex talk about how much they missed each other. They are at least going to be good friends.
Connie is still thinking about Gloria’s trying to hard to get along with Dani and Martín. She asks Plu if he would want more kids, say with Gloria. He tells her that Gloria doesn’t want children.
Emiliano is with the Rivera family and feels left out. He tells Remedios he doesn’t think she’s ready to be with him. They have a heated argument in which she says he isn’t giving her time and he says she’s not making a firm decision.
We go back and forth between Connie and Roger and Plutarco and Gloria. Both Connie and Plu ask their “amigos” whether they’ve considered having children
Emiliano is drinking several beers and then makes a booty call to Lorena at 2:00 am. She, of course, shows up. [Well, they wrote her dialog quite a while ago saying she didn’t want to be with a man who said another woman’s name during foreplay, so I guess this is to prolong the separation or maybe have Reme end up with Max.]
Connie and Plutarco have drafted a divorce agreement for the high-end clients. It seems to be acceptable to both parties, even though the ex-husband glares at his former wife on the way out. The woman is very pleased.
The coach tells Alex he can’t just sit around the bleachers. She tells him how much she loves football. Later the coach talks to Marta. He says there are no rules prohibiting Alex from playing, and she’d make a fabulous kicker. Marta just cuts him off.
Ramiro is still a bit dubious. He’s asked Pedro to come by to discuss his gay son, Pablo. Pedro says he knew Pablo was gay before Mónica did. She was the one he worried about. Pedro says that in any case, you love your children.
Connie is talking to Roger in the office when Reme arrives. She tells them what Marta said about the reason Alex can't play, not that he's trans but that he’s new to the team. Reme says she’s up to her back teeth with Marta. Connie is ready to take legal action when Roger has a different idea. He says a lawsuit could put Alex in an uncomfortable position.
Emiliano tells Isabel and Fernando that the biopsy was positive and that she has cancer. Isabel looks stricken. Emi goes on to say that her cancer is Stage 1, and her chances of survival are very good. He refers her to an eminent oncologist.
Pablo tells José Miguel that their thing is only about passion. And that they’ll just end up hurting each other again. He breaks it off.
Plutarco is reviewing Gloria’s divorce file from 5 years ago. [They pulled the file because of the similarity to their new case.] He discovers that there was a codicil about frozen eggs of Gloria’s being kept for 15 years.
Fernando comes to see Pablo. Pablo apologizes profusely for what happened and puts it down to jealousy, the same jealousy Fer had when José Miguel showed up. But Fer came to tell him about Isabel’s cancer.
Lorena comes to see Emiliano at work, and they get it on in his office. He pulls the curtain over the glass window just when I’m expecting Remedios to arrive.
We don’t see exactly what Roger’s plan is. But, at the law office, Remedios, Alex, Max, Lucía, Dani, Mariana, and the leader of the trans group are there and Roger appears to be setting up a video camera. [Cant wait!!]
Wonderful recap, novelera! Thanks so much. I found it especially helpful in several places where the conversation went by too quickly for me, e.g., the scene near the beginning after Luis wakes up.
I was really disappointed in Emiliano's 2 a.m. booty call to Lore. And even more so when she came to his medical office and he didn't throw her out.
I too am very eager to see what Roger's plan is. Perhaps it will be publicizing Alex's wish to play football and the principal's not permitting him to do so, in spite of the coach's now supporting the idea. As SpanProf notes, gender-bending stories do tend to make the local news. Though since this story has a villain, it might not--unless, of course, the plan is to show the video first to the principal and give her a chance to explain her position or, better yet, change her mind.
