Hola everybody. We're giving LILA a break tonight. Too bad because I know our favorite romance writer would have really given us a tender play by play of David and Regina's first date, but ni modo. She needs a break and I'm here to give it.
Several stories intertwined tonight: Rafa-saved-by-the-bell and Cinthia; Luis, Susana, Gabriel...with Paulina lurking like a cockroach in the background; Daniel in the Lion's Den, confronting Urbino, the loan shark. Luckily he had David with him for backup. The Samuel/Perla/Natalia plus daughter mess; and finally, our resident sadist Mireya, enjoying raining on Arturo's pink parade by telling him Regina left early with David. Ahem.
Let's deal with the short stories first. We see Rafa pacing around his sad kitchen, going into his lovely dining room, clearly looking in every nook and cranny for left over drugs. None there. So he heads out to get some. Returns with a vial, a band to wrap around his ankle, and a needle to inject himself between the toes. It's ready to go. And the phone rings. Cinthia. How are you? -Not great. Was at therapy today. Stirred up a lot of painful stuff. -I want to be here for you if you need me but can't talk more right now. But I care. I'm ready to listen. -It's okay. I'm okay.
And he is. Crushes the needle and leans back, thinking of Cinthia. Ah love. Or the hope of love. Just in time. For now.
PSA Arturo is seeing a patient who's discovered a lump and wants it checked. Exam with nurse present. Further tests needed to see if lump is benign or malignant. But self-examinations are important and can lead to early treatment. Never fear the word "cancer" he adds. PSA over. Take notes, class.
Okay. Back to the drama. Luz is practically writhing in agony as she present Daniel and his family with the hefty bill that René is insisting on. This leads Papa Paco to remonstrate that they never should have brought him to the hospital in the first place. He could have recovered quite easily at home! Daniel promises to pay it off week by week from his salary-- over his parents' somewhat feeble protestations. This is such a sad, painful story. So let's skip to the good part. Danny boy wants to confront the loan shark next day and ask for more time (which would mean more interest charges!) David insists on going with him. When Urbino's goon attacks David, he cold clocks him and tells Urbino he's a lousy abuser but he'll pay off Daniel's debt. So all you Team David members rejoice! For now. I'd hate to see his pretty face messed up by those lowdown muggers.
So, on to the fallout from infidelity. We hear the term "consequences" a lot in this sorry saga. First Samuel goes to Perla's room where she's sleeping. But awakens at the touch of his hand and starts gushing over how much she loves him. He's in a different place evidently. He needs time alone. He did this all wrong (ya think?). He should have left Natalia first. And been honest with his daughter. For now he just wants time on his own to sort things out. She's still dreaming of a great love; sounds like he just wants the whole mess over with. Later Natalia comes in to ask why Perla didn't press charges; but admits she can't live with the terror of waiting to be arrested and is going to turn herself in. But not before reminding little sis how deeply she hurt her. Perla's doing the usual "I didn't want it to be this way" and sniveling, but it looks like multiple bridges are being burned in this family. Or as they say..."consequences". Last we see of Natalia, she is indeed, at the local police station, daughter in tow, who evidently is very proud of Mom for facing up to what she did.
Okay. On to Luis, Susana and their son. (Are you wondering when I'll get to David and Regina? Hey, we always save dessert for last, you guys.) The atmosphere in Gabriel's room is tense. Paulina's presence back in their lives has frayed the thread of reconciliation and tenderness between our couple. On top of the strain of their mutual terror at Gabe's continued illness. Finally he sleepily regains consciousness and is astute enough to sense the coldness between his parents. And begins to plead with them both to be "like they were before--warm, loving, and vowing to stay together forever." A very sad commentary on the harm done to children whose parents don't value their relationship enough to protect it. Both Samuel and Natalia's adult daughter, and young Gabriel are very threatened by the seeming disintegration of their families. And Luis and Susana, at least, are listening. We see them thawing, drawing closer, their heads gently touching each other as they nestle with Gabriel, their gloved hands touching and intertwining over his chest. And agreeing that first thing they'll do when he gets well is attend an America soccer game together--all three of them!
This sweet moment continues as Gabe slips back into sleep and Luis and Susana go outside the room together. She asks him to hold her close, never let her go...he professes his love for her, now and always. And lurking like a black widow spider is our Paulina who's...wait for it... saying "Sorry to interrupt." She's worried that the medical treatment is too strong, particularly with the danger of Gabriel's aneurysm. But suggests not doing anything until the next day. Susana wants treatment now. Luis agrees with Paulina that they can wait. Once again-- miles apart. No trust. Lots of pain. And the dramatic last moment of this episode is when suddenly Gabriel codes and Luis frantically starts CPR. But I refuse to end on that horrid note. Let's hope for a happy resolution tomorrow, eh Patio? I'm crossing my fingers that Gabriel will live and Susana and Luis' bond will be strengthened by this final rough patch with Paulina. Or as they say-- post-traumatic growth is more common than post-traumatic stress. Make the right choice people!
And dessert has arrived, folks.
Yes, our Regina and David have just been floating along this whole time in the ER. Oh, there was a moment when Regina cranked her lovely neck, worried about the lack of progress with Gabriel. But David reassures her, with a smile and that warm look of melting amor from those yummy puppy dog eyes. And he loves that she's so tender-hearted and capable of worrying about others. So a hug is in order. And a slightly abashed look around to see if anybody's noticing. And maybe not caring if they did. Ah, that pink cloud. They both have goofy smiles and look about 14. I'm loving every moment, aren't you?
Well, why let that moment fade? David suggests he wants to take her someplace special after work and she's all for it. He's passed the place so many times, seeing happy couples through the window. Now it's their turn. Off they go. On his motorcycle. Once seated inside, she wants to know all about him, and he lets down the wall a little bit to explain...well, why he has walls in the first place. The birth defect made it hard for him to walk and the kids made fun of him. His family was over-protective. But the operation made all the difference, and after that he was ready to run wild, take risks, be a rebel with the wind in his face going all out after life. She loves that about him and is ready to ditch her boring life after work to ride along with him into an uncertain future. More goofy smiles and warm love lights shining from enamored eyes. These two beautiful people look really nuts about each other. What a treat. Back at her home, there are several sweet kisses (alright, 4. I counted 'em). More goofy smiles and warm looks. And some worried "cuidates" about his proposed confrontation with Daniels' loan shark tomorrow. He reassures her he'll take care, and the magical night ends. For now.
But what do you want to bet that both slept like angels, wrapped in warm dreams about each other? That's what I think they did. And that's what I want you all to do tonight as well. Especially our hard-working LILA who is juggling a lot of balls in the air right now. Sweet Dreams everybody. Dream of someone you love...or loved...or hope to love. But Dream!
I haven't been around for awhile. How are you Ladies doing? Im hoping all is healthy and well. Iam, thank
The good Lord.
Did you get a look at the new show tonite? Imperio de mentiras, not sure about the spelling so here it is in english "Empire of lies". It looks like it might be a good wild ride. Its a remake of a turkish tn. lets hope one of the lovebirds dont die in the end to save the other one. Theres a superstar in it. Hey
Maybe somebody can remake eterno love and kemal wont die in the end.
I have never hated to see such a horrible ending in all my life. But
Its done, moving on.
Im guessing medicos came on 8:00, cuz that new show came on at 9:00.
Ok then, I will be back later, maybe probly tomorrow.
Yall please stay safe♡
judyB & Rgv Chick♡
Judy, carefully concocted with wit, wisdom and an unparalleled understanding and conveyance of human emotions, all of which seemed present tonight.
“Paulina's presence back in their lives has frayed the thread of reconciliation and tenderness between our couple” could not have described her intrusiveness more perfectly. “Lurking like a black widow spider”, we wonder what is transpiring in her heart, what emotions are swirling beneath her veiled expression.
“She's worried that the medical treatment is too strong, particularly with the danger of Gabriel's aneurysm. But suggests not doing anything until the next day. Susana wants treatment now. Luis agrees with Paulina that they can wait”. As our hearts sank, we fear these were misguided decisions. Life threatening, perhaps even life ending.
“She's still dreaming of a great love; sounds like he just wants the whole mess over with” described Samuel and Perla’s situation exactly. We just want them (and Natalia) to not darken our screens again (as I grumble to myself most uncharitably).
Rafa. This is the second time Cinthia’s timing has been impeccable. But Rafa needs much more. He cannot rely just on her super powers to know just when he needs her.
David is proving to be a staunch and loyal friend. I love that he went with Daniel and stood up to the thug without fear. And offering to pay Daniel’s debt just added to his awesomeness.
“Ah love. Or the hope of love. Just in time. For now”. I loved their dinner and the sweet kisses David and Regina shared.
What a treat Judy! Just marvelous. Gracias amiga.
Lila, you are so deserving of a break. I hope you were able to relax a bit tonight.
Diana
Nina!!!
"I like to dream judyB, it beats lookin at reality right now which is shot to hell. Dreams gives us hope for a better tomorrow".
So good to see your post. Your words are so true...We need a better tomorrow. All of us.
Diana
Hello NINA. So glad to hear from you and do hope you'll be joining the group for Imperio de Mentiras. URBAN has written an excellent debut recap, with pictures, which is on the main page.
DIANA...Thanks for those kind words, my friend. And I certainly agree with this:
"Rafa. This is the second time Cinthia’s timing has been impeccable. But Rafa needs much more. He cannot rely just on her super powers to know just when he needs her."
Indeed. Although traditional telenovelas always emphasize that those who love have a spidey sense that alerts them when a dear one is in danger, Rafa needs a bit more than that. As a doctor, he's got easy access to the pharmaceuticals he's been abusing. And we all know how hard it is to change even the most innocuous habits, much less a serious addiction.
And yes, Team David folks had a lot to enjoy last night. I felt a bit sorry for Arturo when he had to post a fake smile on his face for Sadistic Mireya. She was certainly enjoying torturing him with the Regina-David news.
Another cool, crisp day in central Ohio. Off for another round of watering the new grass seedlings. Ah, the exciting life I lead!
Thank you, JudyB! I'm so glad you ended off with dessert.
Seeing someone so ill and near death is so difficult and heart wrenching, but when it involves a child, I just can't imagine the pain and anguish that parents feel.
"“Paulina's presence back in their lives has frayed the thread of reconciliation and tenderness between our couple” Your interpretations and descriptions always seem to capture the essence of the scenes. I really don't know what to think of Paulina. At times, I think she is really trying to help, but then she gives those looks that convey a seemingly darker side. And she always seems to have bad timing!
Favorite scene was David accompanying Daniel to talk to Urbina. What a guy David is! Not just strong, but sensitive and generous in every way.
I was really shocked at Natalia's turn-around; did someone give her a big dose of Xanax? She is actually turning herself in! WOW!
Thanks RGV CHICK...Had to laugh at your suggestion that somebody dosed Natalia with a major hit of Xanax. You're right that it's quite a turnaround from skewering Little Sis with a screwdriver, to demurely turning oneself into the police for doing something oh-so-definitely against the law!
Well, if Natalia can flip like that, maybe our seriously addicted Rafa can rise from the ashes after a day or so of talk therapy also. Works for me. I like fast solutions.
Judy, Susanlynn, Lila (you've got the wiki link from last week), Kirby, SpanProf, RGV Chick, Diana, Nina & everyone else:
1.) Flashbacks showed Marcela telling Horacio about some suspicious activities.
2.) David killed Horacio by denying the Old Man medication when Horacio suffered a fatal heart attack after a confrontation on what David was doing (Horacio discovered his up-to-no-good son was doing illegal activities: human trafficking, drug trafficking, etc.,) & David provokes the fatal heart attack of Horacio by letting his father die like that.
3.) Omar wants NOTHING to do with Creepy Uncle David or anyone else in that disturbing family. I am assuming Mabel & the kids fled the country since I didn't see them in last night's Gran Final episode or Thursday & Friday's episodes for that matter.
Meanwhile, Omar & Marcela are together again & make love.
4.) Cristina does well in the latest swimming competition.
5.) Ines finally washes her hands of Vicente(who's now living like a bum in the poorest section of town).
6.) Marcela discovers it was Maru, who was sending the mysterious messages at the Penon.
7.) Rommel finds out from his mother that Dirty Cop Menendez was his biological father (who was killed by Rommel). Then he goes to prison, finds out one of his friends got attacked before he too, gets attacked & raped, so there.
8.) Elvira makes peace with Areli. We never see Elvira again afterwards.
9.) I'm assuming Rebeca went to prison after confessing her complicity in the illegal activities.
10.) Going to assume Lorenzo & Maru ended up together. Somebody needs to give Gabriela Carrillo a leading Protagonista role in a future Telenovela soon.
11.) Everyone celebrating the festivities at the residence where the Duran girls, Ines & Co., are in attendance.
12.) Nice seeing Geraldine Galvan in this Telenovela portraying the character of Jacqueline Montes.
13.) Whatever happened to Magda ?
14.) I noticed Daniela Romo made a guest appearance.
15.) Areli & Yahir get back together.
16.) Areli, Ines, Marcela & Cristina give their final words to the camera. Other than that, this was a very intriguing Telenovela.
Greetings SpanProf. Interesting that there is less openness about breast cancer in Mexico than here. But you're quite right--thank you Betty Ford! She certainly paved the way. And in other matters as well.
And I have to admit I'm a bit worried about our tempestuous, risk-taking David. That goon must have been mortified at how David dispatched him. And I assume the loan shark doesn't "really" want the loan paid back. He'd rather keep ratcheting up the interest and sending his bully boys to thrash and intimidate these poor people. But we'll keep our fingers crossed for our darling brown-eyed boy...that he emerge unscathed and the debt is fully and completely paid.
Rafael definitely needs extended therapy and WTH is he not in an inpatient facility? He has too-easy access to the stuff he's addicted to.
If Paulina is irritating to us imagine how Susanna feels.
So, David is also a good street fighter. What can't he do?
Natalia's about-face seems to be about Valeria as much as herself. She doesn't want to lose her daughter over this and if she does time I don't think the other prisoners will give her too hard a time. This was about an Hombre Malvado. Better to drink some tequila and listen to Paquita.
Thank you for Valeria! URBAN. I could not remember her name last night for the life of me. And I think you're quite right--both Natalia and Samuel want to make things right with their daughter. And this is Natalia's way of redeeming herself in Valeria's eyes. Also, good point about the other ladies in the hoosegow--they would no doubt admire Nat for the way she drove home her point (ahem) with her sister.
"Drink some tequila and listen to Paquita." Always good advice! These cheatin' guys aren't worth jail time. But if she gets some, she can make new friends and maybe learn some new card games.
Great work, JudyB. Thank you!
I too loved how David stepped up and defended Daniel. He was certainly right when he said that he was glad he accompanied him. Hopefully that all gets sorted out so Daniel and his parents won’t have to worry about it any longer.
I said before that if Gabriel dies there’s definitely gonna be problems between Luis and Susana and Paulina is already thrust in the middle of it all. Please writers don’t kill off the boy!
When Natalia left Perla’s room I didn’t think the next scene would be of her turning herself in but she did the right thing. And Samuel also did the right thing by ending things with Perla. After everything that happened I’m surprised that Perla still had hope that she and Samuel could be together. I’m pretty sure he (or Natalia?) even pointed out that she almost died. Getting killed isn’t worth it in a situation like that. There’s so many real life stories of infidelity that end in tragedy.
Hopefully Rafa continues on the path to recovery and realizes his worth. He definitely has demons that he needs help dealing with.
I'm with you TF--if they kill off the boy!...yikes, just wait until I get my hands on those writers. And I have more than one screwdriver too!
I'm pretty sure we're all hoping for Rafa's recovery and realization of his self-worth. Although it's risky to base self-esteem on someone else's love, Cinthia's interest in him will certainly help. And maybe group therapy will do the rest. But I'm inclined to agree with URBAN, he needs intensive in-patient care first. (if this were real life.)
Thanks, Judy. Great recap. Things we're so sad with Gabriel, so I'm loving how you accentuated last night's bright spot (Regina and David!). You are a doll to give Lila a break. My faves are everybody's faves:
Paulina's presence back in their lives has frayed the thread of reconciliation and tenderness between our couple.
More goofy smiles and warm love lights shining from enamored eyes.
I think Paulina is giving her best expert advice, but even experts can be wrong sometimes. They took us to the sad brink last night, but I'm guessing Gabriel will survive.
I couldn't get enough of David and Regina. The leather jackets, the laid-back date, the restaurant. Yikes, I haven't eaten in a sit-down restaurant since March. Call me old-fashioned, but I like that they had a first date that didn't end in the sheets.
Love that David accompanied Daniel, but I've never seen a surgeon so willing to risk getting his gifted hands bruised and mangled in a fight. Thank goodness the loanshark lackey lacked skills.
Nina, good to see you here!
Thanks Niecie. I'm with you--how nice that Regina and David spent the evening talking, getting to know each other better on a personal, rather than professional level, without making a mad dash to the bedroom. Yeah, you crazy kids, take your time.
And oh my, just thinking today how I miss those long extended conversations in a warm restaurant--whether with a good friend, family, or perhaps a new person to dream about. Take-out, shared on a front porch, is not bad, but not nearly as nice as being in a warm, friendly place with ambiance, great waiters, and nice surroundings. Those days will come again. But when?
Thank you Judy! Glad you ended with dessert because yeah.. I have a bad feeling about little Gabriel so I won’t even go there.
I LOVE DAVID SO MUCH! If I didn’t already love him I would have fallen in love with him after this episode lol. He and Regina were so stinkin cute during that restaurant scene. They really looked like they were in love. I don’t know if I’m more impressed or shocked at how real it seemed lol. I’ve seen Daniel Arenas in other novelas and I don’t remember him ever looking at his love interests the way David looks at Regina. I saw him in Mi Marido where he was in a long-term serious relationship with the love of his life, and in La Gata where he had been in love since they were kids, and yet those are nothing compared with how in love David and Regina look.
About David and the thugs- I’m not worried about David’s beautiful face. If anyone can defend themselves in this TN, it’s David lol. Besides, he is the last person who deserves a punch to the face! Poor guy has only been happy for like 2 days, let him be happy a while longer before things start going downhill hahaha
Judyb, loved your classic Judyb spin on things.
Loved David defending his friend Daniel. I like heroes. Telenovelas used to be full of them, but lately they seem to be writing antiheroes.
Also loved David and Regina smiling and happily getting to know each other before moving sofas. #old-fashionedlovefan
Can't stand to see sick children . Too tragic in real life and in novelas.
As for Perla, Nat, and Sam...in the words of our dear Carlos...NEXT....and from me..Basta.
Greetings again. UNSOLICITED OPINIONS...I know, I know, I know...Regina and David DID look really in love. I kept wondering if the actress looked at her actual boyfriend like that; And ditto for David-- those melting brown eyes, that smile that went on and on and on and on....Ah, sweet memories. And like you, the sudden sick descent in the Gabe storyline was a shock, so I was NOT going to end on that note. Nohow, no way. Let's keep our fingers crossed, shall we? (And it's true, the writers always seem to sacrifice an innocent in these dramas...but a kid? I don't think so. I sure hope not.
SUSANLYNN...AKA OLD-FASHIONEDLOVEFAN...YESSSSSS!...As Billy Ray would say "Talk Some". And then maybe move sofas. Absolutely no rush at all. We hope.
And thanks for that shoutout to Carlos. He definitely would have had a lot of unkind things to say about Shifty Samuel and his shifty morals. Hopefully this storyline is wrapped up and OVER.
Judyb... Yes, dreaming of those we love is always good. It reminds me of an old song by Kenny Nolan " I like to dream cause dreaming can make you mine ... "
"Love that David accompanied Daniel, but I've never seen a surgeon so willing to risk getting his gifted hands bruised and mangled in a fight" was great but "Thank goodness the loan shark lackey lacked skills" was perfect Niecie!
"And oh my, just thinking today how I miss those long extended conversations in a warm restaurant--whether with a good friend, family, or perhaps a new person to dream about" made me yearn for those days as well Judy. For some reason, I keep thinking about the last time I ate out which was in March. Strange how something to simple that we took for granted is so greatly missed. It appears we will need to continue to be patient.
And I've been hesitating to say it but I fear Gabe is not long for this world. His sweet speech to his parents and the omnipresent Paulina are bad omens. I'm always wrong so let's hope I am (once again).
Susanlynn, we need a few happy endings, don't we??
Diana
JudyB! THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! I could quote your whole recap and gonna take some lessons from it! Thorough, witty, warm and chicken gumbo to the soul! It's been some kind of day. I hope to go back and read my friends comments later. Glad for a little break. Glad to be back! It's almost show time!
Diana, yes , the last time I ate out was lunch at Ruby Tuesdays at our local mall with my best friend on March 11. Then, we entered this weird twilight zone. Will we ever get out of it ?
Sweet Lila, you are sooo welcome to a little break and then. This one was from the heart.
Diana...I am so chicken I’m not even going to watch tonight. I can handle bad news (even fictitious bad news) better in the morning.
Dreaming, yes, Susanlynn, dreaming of restaurant meals, hugging friends, shaking hands with strangers and hoping one day we’ll be back there again.
Hola, Peeps! JudyB! I thank you from top to bottom and every single inch of my heart for covering yesterday’s episode! I loved how you put it together with zing and warmth, Amiga! Gracias! Peeps, I didn’t want to sleep on this and I ask you as I remind myself to remember, it’s only a novela….it’s only a novela! Also remember, if we have time to watch a novela and comment on a blog, we are doing more than all right! Please add, correct or expand ; better yet, we can talk about other stuff that’s like, cheerful. Vamanos!
Gabriel died. Gabriel died and the whole episode is exquisitely portrayed grief, anguish, anxiety, blame, anger, the whole gamut. I do not have the heart or inclination to retell it and I don’t think it’s necessary; these emotions need no translation. The painful scene of his death; the aftermath in the hospital (even Marco seems shocked and moved); the funeral and the aftermath of Luis clutching the box of Gabriel’s ashes at their home while Susana retreats to Gabriel’s room are gut-wrenching. This is actually the final scene.
Susana blames Paulina and Luis, turning away from him, probably for good. She has told him she will never, ever forgive him. The entire Instituto staff is crushed but comfort Luis and pledge their support to him in whatever way they can. In terms of work, David will cover for Rafa and Art for Luis. They also comfort and support each other. It is becoming obvious to Art that David and Regina are together; he sees that she declines his invitation to accompany her home, but leaves with David.
Rene even initially seems a little upset upon hearing of Gabriel’s death but recovers within minutes insisting that the Galvans will pay for every procedure, every piece of equipment and every day that Gabriel was a patient. Miryea has the decency to express some disagreement and exasperation with this stance. Luz refuses to be the one to give Luis this news; Rene says he will. Later that evening Luz ties into her Daughter, Cara, for walking (on crutches) with her Dad, protesting that Cinthia did not release her to walk yet! What’s fueling this melt down is Gabriel’s death. Cara and her husband comfort her.
Two other families are in crisis: The woman who found a lump in her breast has had a mammogram and awaits the results. The husband has heard from the internet that the radiation of mammogram itself can cause cancer. This feels like a PSA against believing everything you hear from the Google Machine. They hug and cry that they hope she doesn’t have cancer. There is a young man who gets home tired from his days activities. He has no appetite and can’t finish the dinner his Mother insisted he eat. He is very tired; goes to bed and we see him the next morning rushed to the Instituto by ambulance, accompanied by his frantic Mother. The young man unconscious and his face is and covered with bloody splotches; initial diagnosis is hemorrhagic syndrome. (Signs and symptoms of VHFs include (by definition) fever and bleeding. Manifestations of VHF often also include flushing of the face and chest, small red or purple spots (petechiae), bleeding, swelling caused by edema, low blood pressure (hypotension), and shock. Malaise, muscle pain, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea occur frequently. – Wikipedia)
Constanza and Patricia have lunch. Constanza gathers two things: One, the Guerreros have a strained relationship with their Daughter, Cinthia; Patricia hardly talks about her. Two, the Guerreros know a lot of rich people: Constanza gets a list of them and potential pledges to the Instituto. Constanza presents both pieces of data to Rene that evening at home. For the first she reminds Rene get closer to the Drs., especially Cinthia and for the second that he tell Montesinos it’s time to choose the new member of the Patronato (Board of Instituto Contributors), Andres Guerrero.
Rafa tells the therapy group how he successfully fought the urge to use again after a wave of desperation, emptiness and anxiety: a call from someone very special to him. After the group a woman named Carmen approaches him. She is the woman who was freaking out about a baby that wouldn’t stop crying to Humberto (the Therapist) on the first day. Well, she wants to talk to Rafa; she was impressed by his story. What about her? She doesn’t have anyone or anything to lift her up like that. When the chain-smoking, tremulous Carmen introduced herself, there was a clanging, discordant note that sounded. Carmen may be one of those psychic vampires that (unintentionally and unconsciously) suck the soul right out of targets they select with an unfailing sixth sense. I think this is Rafa’s next challenge!
That’s all I got, Peeps.
. . .It is becoming obvious to Art that David and Regina are together; he sees that she declines his invitation to accompany her home from the funeral, but leaves with David.
Thanks for getting the recap up so quickly, Lila. It’s actually rare that I get this mad/sad about something that happened in a telenovela. The only other time would’ve been the gruesome deaths at the end of first season of Por Amar Sin Ley that included a young character like Gabriel.
Paulina shouldn’t have even bothered going to the funeral. If Susana divorces Luis, I won’t be surprised. Paulina’s presence alone has obviously created a wedge between them even if Susana didn’t have it in her head that Gabriel’s death is partly Paulina’s fault.
René is heartless. At least Mireya tried to get through to him. Luz has good intentions but obviously René won’t budge.
TF You are welcome, TF! I am with you! I didn't see PASL, but this is indeed shocking and saddening! Like, Diana, I had a feeling Gabriel wasn't long for this world when he asked his parents to promise to stay together and kept asking if he would be all right. I KNEW he was a goner when Luis started chest compressions to resuscitate him. He had an aortic aneurysm, for crying out loud! When he pounded his chest with his fist I was like, well I'll be damned! They killed a child! So much for the respite from rona.
Paulina’s presence alone has obviously created a wedge between them even if Susana didn’t have it in her head that Gabriel’s death is partly Paulina’s fault.
ITA, Paulina should've kept her arse totally away from that funeral. She was there looking for forgiveness! Paulina was right, how cynical! DID she do everything she could? I still think that scene where Luis recoiled when she said "We" will do everything we can to save him was meaningful. After the writers having killed a child; can a reunion between the former lovers be far behind? Susana and Luis are in the throes of the worse grief imaginable and she cannot share it with Luis; she refuses to. Yah, Susana has left the building!
René has upgraded his hell ticket to first class: the hottest part of the fire!
Thank you, TF! I hope you come back so we can de-brief over this awful turn of events. I'm going to be checking in throughout the day!
Still unlikely Paulina killed Gabriel. Susana needs to get over herself with it. Paulina was uncomfortable the entire time she treated that kid because of Susana’s animosity. Susana might as well have demanded a different practitioner, if she couldn’t just keep her b*tching to herself the entire time. It added an extra pressure to Paulina and she knew that anything that doesn’t go Susana’s way would end up blowing up in Paulina’s face. Her b*tching also affected Luis, as he watched his son his get worse. Gabe’s case wasn’t any normal Kawasaki case either- he was older than most patients. Either way, if there was foul play it would be known soon, and revenge for getting dumped sounds silly and even childish. It’s unlikely. Paulina likely knew Gabe wasn’t going to survive, from the first day she saw him. The medicine just wasn’t working, and if there was no other treatment to pursue, what could she have done?
If Luis and Susana divorce, it would probably be better for the both of them. Susana never got over his cheating anyway, and now she blames him for Gabe’s death. Susana is the problem, not him.
RE: Paulina looking for forgiveness at the funeral, of course she was. She was blamed for the death. Maybe this was her first Kawasaki patient death. You have crybaby Daniel blaming himself for Gabe’s death too.
Thank you for your sensitivity in writing this excellent recap. How difficult this must have been.
Death is always inevitable but unbearable when a life is taken before it has barely begun. The promise of a sweet, fragrant existence snuffed out before it has the opportunity to bloom.
Lila, you did have the heart and strength to write the stirring “The painful scene of his death; the aftermath in the hospital (even Marco seems shocked and moved); the funeral and the aftermath of Luis clutching the box of Gabriel’s ashes at their home while Susana retreats to Gabriel’s room are gut-wrenching”. Gabe’s death has torn his family apart. Is there any hope this decimation is reversible?
Anon, there is so much blame to go around. Susana should never have gone to the funeral. Yes, she was seeking forgiveness for herself and it was a desperate and utterly selfish ploy.
Will the young man just brought into the ER be a chance for some sort of redemption after being unable to save Gabe?
I never thought I’d see the day when I would wish to see less of wonderful Marisol del Olmo but as Constanza, she is fraying the one last nerve left after watching her odious husband. TF, Rene is reprehensible, I totally agree.
I am also wondering who Carmen’s storyline will intersect with Rafa’s. Your “there was a clanging, discordant note that sounded” could not have stated that better.
The truth is that the worst hasn't happened. The aftermath of those left behind after Gabe's passing are left to fight their grief, their despair, their hopelessness. And worst of all, each other.
Thank you Lila!
Diana
I don't doubt the writers would go there with Paulina after having killed an innocent child. I'm with Susana in her well-founded, evidence-based animosity and, if I go inside the novela world for a minute, I'm with her on the skepticism that in all of Mexico, the Dr. that was a participant in the near-destruction of my marriage is the only expert on the disease my son now has? BS! NOPE! Susana had a right to "bitch", to herself and to Luis whose role it was to find a different Provider. It's his son too, and he's the one who shit in the nest of their home life! Paulina is in no way a victim here. She also had worked for years as a Pediatrician specializing in rare pediatric illnesses. SHE, being the other participant in the marriage-fouling fiasco could have helped looked for one of her colleagues, bowing out because of what had happened between her and Luis.
Susana is not the problem; she had mended things with Luis before Gabe died. If Paulina wants forgiveness, let her go to the sanctuary of her choice and pray to whomever she worships, NOT at the funeral of the child of her former lover in whose case she was NOT totally accepted! NOPE! Again, she and Luis, because of this ethics-bending previous relationship could have looked for another Provider. It being possibly her first case is all the more reason to have done so.
A prominent underlying theme in this was the responsibility Physicians feel when a patient dies. Daniel and none of the others are crybabies for crying when a patient dies. I'd rather have a Doctor with the kind of humanity Daniel, Luis, Gonzalo, Regina and all of them (even Marco) displayed than that of Rene who would not have cried, even if he were the Attending Physician.
I hope the storyline is done with Paulina. Let her take her ass back to wherever she came from. If she and Luis start getting back together, they will both be dead to me: recapper's privelege, and somebody else can cover their storyline. SO THERE!!
Hey, Diana! You are welcome! Girl, I didn't want to sleep on this! Jeezopete! They killed Gabriel!! I wish I could've thought of something like this last night; thank you for saying it now:
Death is always inevitable but unbearable when a life is taken before it has barely begun. The promise of a sweet, fragrant existence snuffed out before it has the opportunity to bloom.
I've said my piece on Susana/Luis/Paulina.
That young man! OMgosh! That looked awful! Diana, I went into this with my eye wide open, it IS a medical novela, afterall but, YIKES! The make-up is too real! I was so taken with poor Gabriel, I missed my sensitivity warnings! I don't know what they're going to do with that poor guy!
What a calculating cow Constanza is! Yah, her and reprehensible Rene is right!
And, my Rafa! OH NO! Carmen is going to be bad news: I can just feel it! She gives a vibe like she'd not only like to use with him, but use him in other ways...he's a Dr. and he's got access to drugs! Carmen wants a piece of that! RUN RAFA, RUN!!!!
Thank YOU, Diana!
Oh please. Susana was the problem here. If she didn’t want her husband’s ex lover to treat her kid; she should have drawn the line and made them get another doctor who was equally qualified. And no one knows if this was Paulina’s first Kawasaki patient. But it could have been her first experience with a patient dying from it. She did what she could and it didn’t work. Gabe would have died at anyone else’s hands too, but we wouldn’t have this convoluted story going around. Susana blaming Paulina for the death is unfair. The affair and the death have nothing to do with each other, and all she’s doing with her bitching is pushing Luis to check out of the marriage. You really think Paulina isn’t suffering that a child died, and to top it off, Luis’ child? Going to the funeral wasn’t the best choice, but you can’t blame her. Ppl are being unfair to her cause they’re blinded by the whole “she’s Luis’ lover.” There’s mote to this than that. She shouldn’t be reduced to being hated because she’s Luis’ lover, but that’s where Susanna bases all her “evidence”. She’s Luis’ lover and obviously had motive to kill her son. Sounds stupid. Sorry not sorry. Susana has to get over that. I’d rather not see Susanna again. She’s proven to be so annoying at nagging Luis for everything.
Also, Daniel was such a crybaby at that scene. Blaming himself for Gabe’s death? That one was a stretch. A ridiculous one.
I'm done with L/P/S. Just glancing at your comment, I feel like you want to argue, and that's fine, I don't. I come here for the comradery and language. Real life has enough contentiousness. In life and in novelas, everyone is entitled to their opinions. I respect yours. Peace be unto you, Anon!
Lila, thank you for condensing those emotionally wrought scenes. You did an outstanding job with this episode.
I'm not going to elaborate on the L/P/S situation as I see that this has already been thoroughly addressed and it seems to be striking some chords. I do, however, hope that Luis and (especially) Susana recall that promise that they made to Gabriel.
At the funeral home, I did notice that everyone was giving Luis their condolences, but no one even tried to approach Susana. And where were Luis's and Susana's families??
I've also noticed that only the resident doctors have parents. Quite unusual!!
Have a wonderful day patio! Stay calm, stay safe, and stay healthy :-)
Hi and thank you, Rgv Chick! You know what, I love the give and take on the Patio and how others notice different things! Like this:
At the funeral home, I did notice that everyone was giving Luis their condolences, but no one even tried to approach Susana. And where were Luis's and Susana's families??
That's a great point! It could've been more well-rounded (but maybe too complex?) to have family members of Susana and Luis there! Wow! It probably boils down to keeping the story "simple" and not adding too many characters and storylines, but yah, kinda strange! I guess they used their budget for the (realistic) never-ending stream of sick folk. Oh, well!
This bears repeating:
Have a wonderful day patio! Stay calm, stay safe, and stay healthy :-)
Thanks, Hon!
"I've also noticed that only the resident doctors have parents. Quite unusual!!" Yes, it is and leave it to you to notice it Rgv Chick!! Excellent point.
On a team video call this morning, one of my colleagues burst into tears. She is trying to navigate everyday life with two children, one of whom has severe, behavioral issues. My heart went out to her.
Differences of opinions are always welcome but can be worded kindly.
Life is so short and fragile. Let's try and lift each other up and support each other. Let's keep Caray as the treasured oasis away from the difficulties of every day life, if we can.
Diana
Amen, Diana! and I'm looking at myself first! I apologize for my salty language and the stridency with which I expressed myself.
I'm starting with the woman in the mirror...oh yeah!!
Ooops, sorry! Like our late and cherished Madelaine (sp), I like song worms too. When you get as old as I am, you've heard a whole lot of songs and they pop up from time to time!
Thank you, Diana!
No need to apologize Lila. My comment was not directed to you.
The sun is out and shining warmly. And I am grateful.
Diana
How wise you were, LILA, to write up this heartbreaking episode immediately and post it. Otherwise your mind would have been writing and re-writing it all night. And even so, I imagine you were haunted by the sadness even as you slept.
I was appalled at how, in their devastating loss, the grieving couple turned against each other rather than reaching out in support. But that often happens at the death of a child. Even without the complicating factor of an affair and the mistress being the one directly involved medically in the child's care. The writers really stacked the deck on this one and they're the ones I'd like to dump a load of concrete on. As you would say LILA, jeezopete!!!!! Just the most dreadful storyline ever.
And I agree, Carmen is giving off a very bad vibe. There are always "vampires" in these support groups, unfortunately, and they usually latch on to the latest comer, because they have already exhausted everyone else in the circle. Let's hope she does not become an impediment in Rafa's recovery because he needs all the help he can get.
The only even vaguely bright spot in this was Mireya seeming appalled and totally put off by Renés self-serving indifference. Hopefully, this is the start of a wake-up call for her.
And thanks, my friend, that after what was a very long day for you, you still took the time to look up the Wikipedia definition of the latest medical malady to arrive in the ER. You put your whole heart, soul and mind into these recaps and it is deeply appreciated.
I'm going to echo all who are wishing the Patio a beautiful and peaceful day. Most of all I am wishing that for you dear LILA as you keep working and taking care of your family and then writing up these spirit-filled recaps. We love you Sweet Lady. You're the best.
Thanks, Lila. Fine job telling this tale and being considerate of our sensitivities. Moving on, your description of Carmen stopped me in my tracts. Simply excellent.
When the chain-smoking, tremulous Carmen introduced herself, there was a clanging, discordant note that sounded. Carmen may be one of those psychic vampires that (unintentionally and unconsciously) suck the soul right out of targets they select with an unfailing sixth sense.
I'll admit I watched only bits last night, but I did catch Ana giving Luis a hug. Good for her. She's human, unlike Rene.
Susanna is in the deepest hole. Luis is too, but he's more the type to reach out to others for help. She is not. It will be interesting to see how the TN handles both of them.
TF, nice to see you here. I had forgotten about the ending of PASL 1. I should've seen this coming.
About Cynthia's mom, as others have pointed out, as the wife of a Master of the Universe she should see through Constanza. I hope we get a scene of Contanza with egg all over her face at the big hospital bash.
JudyB, thank you and you are so on point! I had to get this episode off my mind and heart right away! I have never posted Medicos at night, but I see now this is the way to handle what I'm sure is not the last upsetting episode. Sheesh! As I say, so much for refuge from rona! There was so much that was gut-punching:
I was appalled at how, in their devastating loss, the grieving couple turned against each other rather than reaching out in support. Dreadful storyline, indeed!!
For my Rafa, I'm afraid this is true:
Let's hope she does not become an impediment in Rafa's recovery because he needs all the help he can get. WAAAAH!
Who would ever have thought "bright spot" and "Miryea" in the same sentence!
The only even vaguely bright spot in this was Mireya seeming appalled and totally put off by Renés self-serving indifference. Hopefully, this is the start of a wake-up call for her.
Awwww, thank you, JudyB, for these sentiments from your heart; muchisimas gracias, de verdad! I love you all, too. Like I said, some would call me an old lady; I've been around the block enough times to know that Love and Peace are the jewels of life, the other stuff are just rocks, lying on the path of life: don't bother throwing them, just skip over 'em and keep stepping!❤😍🤳
Welcome, SpanProf and thanks! Yah, man, that Rene is some kinda lowdown! And here Constanza is encouraging him to get more involved in the clinical side of the Instituto's work and to get close to Cinthia! Yikes! There are all kinds of things that could go wrong with that, especially now that she and Rafa are getting close to each other. After Gabriel's death, I'm afraid for Rafa. These writers play hard ball!
Span, I like this better and hope this is true:
Alternatively, if Carmen's story is a positive one, I suspect she will become an ongoing character and Rafa may find some purpose and even healing by helping her.
Niecie in MD! Hey, thanks! And thank you for mentioning Ana giving Luis a hug. This was the most sincere, heartfelt expression of human empathy we have seen from Ana since this began! It was wonderful, especially since, in an earlier episode when Luis reported that Gabriel was sick, she said that "...kids are just little germ factories, always getting sick; that's why I decided to never have them!" Luis had winced after that comment. Dr. Ana was sweet and redeemed herself!
Niecie, from your keypad to the novela god's ears:
About Cynthia's mom, as others have pointed out, as the wife of a Master of the Universe she should see through Constanza. I hope we get a scene of Contanza with egg all over her face at the big hospital bash.
I hope the baddies get SOME smackdown on the way to the BIG ONE. And yes, I'm callin' for some more telenovela lovin' y'all!
Where's UnOp! Help me call on the telenovela gods, Kid!
Thank you, Niecie!
Thank you Lila! I didn’t watch this last night, so I watched it this morning and balled my eyes out right before going to work..
The only thing I’ll say about Paulina is that she had no business at the funeral. Period.
I got mad when Art tried to send David to cover all the shifts at the clinic.. seriously? It wasn’t the time.. but glad David didn’t argue, just said he would do anything necessary to help Regina. And of course Regina is not going to send him to the clinic every day lol
I thought Daniel’s reaction was appropriate. Gabriel was his patient.. and Maybe he’s never had a patient die before. He’s only a second-year resident, so it seems believable to me that he may not know how to deal with this situation. He did say “what kind of doctor am I if I couldn’t even save my friend’s son?”, but he was also looking through charts trying to figure out what he did “wrong”, so it’s like quit his residency or anything. He is in shock.
Regina’s reaction did seem a little off to me.. she tells Gonzalo “Gabriel died... I don’t think I can be a doctor anymore.” I was like wait, what?! THAT felt like overreacting to me. Luis saying “what good is it being a doctor if I couldn’t save my son” I understand. Regina I don’t understand.
At the funeral, Ana says something to Luis along the lines of “I know exactly what you’re going through, the same thing happened to me.” HUH?! Did Ana have a kid who died?! If she was married and had a kid it would explain why she had not tried to rekindle her relationship with David for years, until now. Ana also tells Luis “my advice is not to let this harden you,” so maybe that’s why she’s so emotionally detached
Hahaha Lila just saw your comment
I had forgotten that Ana said she never wanted to have kids! Hmm so maybe she was an empathetic doctor and had a child patient who died? So now she doesn’t want to get too involved??
I almost forgot about the comment Ana made. I’d be interested to know her backstory. I wondered if there was a reason that she was always only technical with her patients and seemingly not compassionate and empathetic. She seems closed off if that makes sense.
I hope the storyline with Paulina is done but I anticipate more fallout between Luis and Susana.
I didn’t/don’t know what to think of Carmen. Obviously Rafa’s rehab companions and their issues will be briefly highlighted but beyond that I don’t know.
My mom was like “Everyone’s at the funeral so then who’s at the hospital?” LOL
UnOp! Hey, thanks for stopping by and thanks for this:
I got mad when Art tried to send David to cover all the shifts at the clinic.. seriously? It wasn’t the time..
I caught that, the booger! He thought he could have David shipped off to the OPC. Neither David nor Regina acknowledged that comment; she told them who was covering whom! Whatever, Art!
UnOp, I was a little surprised at Regina's response, too, but I guess it just shows that they all, as excellent Doctors, and most of all as Luis' friends, were hurt and stunned both personally and professionally.
At the funeral, Ana says something to Luis along the lines of “I know exactly what you’re going through, the same thing happened to me.”
YES! Ana did say something along the lines that she understood what he was going through, ore than Luis knew! Hint of a back story! Maybe she lost a child, or went through the death of a sibling. That was very interesting. Thanks for pointing that out!
Ana also tells Luis “my advice is not to let this harden you,” so maybe that’s why she’s so emotionally detached
Looking at your later comment (2:39), all these are possible; a child, a sib, a patient. Yup! Remember how sweet she was with that little girl with hand, foot, and mouth disease? Hope we find out!
So observant, thanks, UnOp! Thanks!
Hey, TF High drama ahead for everybody! I love this:
My mom was like “Everyone’s at the funeral so then who’s at the hospital?” LOL
Well, like the Keebler Elves, there is a whole troop of Docs that are on call just for times like this! That's funny! Good thing that poor young man didn't come into the ER just then!
I’ve always been curious if we were going to get a backstory for Ana because we don’t know ANYTHING about her. I think we’ve only seen her once outside the hospital for like 3 seconds, eating dinner alone. I’m not defending any of the things Ana has done, but I do think she really does care about David, so she’s not completely cold-hearted. I’d rather find out more about Ana then see more of Constanza haha
Dear Lila, I just couldn't watch this episode, so I especially appreciate that you did and provided a recap. A child's funeral was just to sad for me to watch ..e enjoy a fictional one. Life is fragile.
We know that The tide will eventually turn , and the villains will pay a price , but it makes me cringe to watch the good folks suffer. Onward.
Susanlynn It is my pleasure to do so! I know you are right that the tide will eventually turn, I just hope it does so before the next to the last episode! Yah, the whole of last night should've been a sensitivity alert! Ah! I almost want to say it will only get better from here, but I'm afraid the writers can take us to new depths. But, yes, ONWARD!!
UnOp, yes, Ana is not a bad person and I agree, she does care about David. Man, she's just a fierce opponent and assertive unto being aggressive. I wonder how much opposition they're going to write in for her and Art against David and Regina?
There's been a brownie mix in my cabinet that I've been resisting for 8 months now. But boy! I'm not going to be able to get through tonight's episode without chocolate. I have CAVED.
I'm sure Rafa would understand. Our choice of "pharmaceuticals" is a bit different but mine work for me. Hope my fellow viewers on the Patio have whatever they need for the aftermath of that heart-wrenching episode last night. Hard times still ahead I fear...and for many episodes.
So to all the rest of you who self-medicate with chocolate, I'm sending you virtual hugs and virtual brownies for this evening. Enjoy!
JudyB! Go for it, Girl! EAT. THE. BROWNIES!!!! JudyB, I blow up with popcorn as if I'm an innertube being inflated. Love the stuff but it fattens me so. Now, I haven't had popcorn for over five years, but I'm feeling the pull!
I think chocolate is safer...I've got some yummy protein bars in the house that are in various flavors of chocolate....yah, that's it! And they're healthy, too! Thanks, JudyB!
Sorry to be so late, but this episode was gut-wrenching.
Rene will burn in hell for all eternity. I just hope that Luis doesn't get violent when Rene gleefully presents the bill to him because that would give Rene an excuse to terminate him. And I hope that Mireya will be Rene's downfall because that is what he deserves.
I agree that Paulina should not have gone to the funeral.
My drug of choice also is chocolate; Dove or better.
BTW, what is the state of healthcare coverage in Mexico, anyway?
Thanks, Urbanita! I know you are doing WONDERFUL WORK over on Emperio. Maybe I can check in and catch up some time...things are a little crazy now.
It would be good to have some background on healthcare in Mexico. I'm afraid I don't have the chops to make any intelligent comments about that, barely understanding American healthcare! It's an excellent question though!
Tonight was not as bad as last night. Estoy cansado y necesito dormir. See y'all in the morning, Good Lord willin'!
Que tal, Peeps! As always, hope and pray everyone is well; that you enjoyed your chocolate or whatever gets your dopamine flowing! (thanks, Susanlynn! Well, yesterday was not as stressful, but as Diana put it so exquisitely, “Death is always inevitable but unbearable when a life is taken before it has barely begun. The promise of a sweet, fragrant existence snuffed out before it has the opportunity to bloom. So, that fragrance lingers in the air, but it is bittersweet and lingers more for some than others. Some of those others can only smell pesos and power. Let’s see how it unfolds. As always, chime in as this is a summary (especially of the bitter) and you may wish to highlight other action! Vamanos!
The Galvans are broken; Susana is prostrate with grief on Gabriel’s bed, clutching his belongings. She cannot tolerate the sight, the sound; the nearness of Luis who clings to the box of Gabriel’s ashes begging and crying that he needs her, that he loves her. She tells him to leave.
Cinthia and Art attend the young man brought in moments earlier, bloody, blotchy and unconscious. Pam is occupied with calming the distraught Mother and keeping her out of the way, taking her to the lobby. Art comes out to get more details on the development of the symptoms: fatigue, fever, vomiting blood; no, he does not use drugs.
David arrives at work; Regina catches up to him and lightly tugs at his collar. He turns to face her and his beautiful face has that look of love! Regina didn’t sleep at all, thinking about what else they could’ve done to help Gabriel while knowing they did do all they could and it wasn’t enough. She worries about Luis. David listens; his acceptance and concern don’t dim the love light in his eyes. Regina is worried about Luis and tells David that she told him he should take all the time he needs. David tells Regina he’s covering for Rafa in the OPC; Regina turns away and makes a face. “Oh, why that carita? I’m going to miss you more than you miss me!” “I don’t believe you.” Regina finally smiles. David calls her to his arms with a simple, “Ven” She rests her head for a moment on his shoulder, her eyes closed. David leans over just slightly to accommodate their difference in height and lightly rubs her back. He fortifies her and we shameless David freaks for the coming day.
This early morning finds the Undersecretary of Health, Eduardo [last name?], Montesinos and Rene having breakfast al fresco. Rene is happy to report things are going better since their meeting (where Gonzalo was chewed out and essentially demoted). Montesinos has good news: Dr. Castillo has secured from Andres Guerrero, an important businessman recently arrived to the city, a pledge at least two million pesos to the Instituto! The Undersecretary is nearly tickled pink: this will allow them to recoup what they lost in the lawsuit! Yes, Rene takes over: it is his intention that the Instituto gain even more in donations from Guerrero and his associates. Public Health is in a state of collapse, with these donations, the Instituto will require less support from the government! The Undersecretary wants to know, “what’s the ask?” Rene continues: To make Andres Guerrero part of the Board of Benefactors (Patronato) and, his wife and Mrs. Guerrero are planning a big benefit dinner to which all the people with resources will be invited. This fundraising gala can modernize the Instituto raise the status of public health and it’s very important that the Secretary and Undersecretary of Health attend. Eduardo will bring it up to the Secretary. He is so pleased that Rene is thinking so much about the Instituto and working so hard for it! Ah, Rene can do much more if he is allowed more responsibility in the direction of the Instituto! Later an almost entranced Rene goes to Gonzalo to tell him about the BIG GALA and how important it is and how excited the Undersecretary is to have such important people supporting the Instituto! Rene asks for Gonzalo’s support and to believe that he is NOT Gonzalo’s enemy! Rene offers his hand. They shake. Rene tells Gonzalo he should invite anyone he wants to the GALA and that ALL the Doctors should come so everybody can see the talent that’s at the heart of the Instituto! The whole Instituto will be showcased! Rene is nearly rapturous with enthusiasm! After he leaves, Gonzalo gives a “that was weird” shake of his head.
Regina and David go their separate ways to work; Regina finds a chirpy Art in the ER staff area. They discuss Eric, the 17-year old with the bloody blotches. Art ties up their consultation with his priceless smile and a declaration of what a good team they are; they work so well together!
David finds a subdued Ana in the OPC. They go to her office to talk. Luis’ tragedy awakened a painful chapter in her life, something that is foundational to who she is to this very day. When she was a child, her younger brother was born prematurely and died of residual respiratory problems. The grief tore their family apart: her Father left them and her Mother became withdrawn, always serious and silent. An Aunt cared for her but she and her Mother were never close again, even rejecting little Ana. Ana seems to revert to being that little girl, alone and starving for her Mother’s love and attention. David gently accepts Ana’s pain but maintains that life is determined by what we do with it, not by what happens to us reminds her of the wonderful life she has built for herself, despite this painful beginning: Ana knows this and thought that being self-sufficient would be enough but after seeing the tragedy that happened to Luis, she realizes the injustice of life. David tells Ana that she has not allowed this pain, that would have broken many others, to stop her from building a good life for herself. Ana’s eyes come out from the fog of memory as she looks at him. She feels so good being with him, sharing like this and she’d like to do this more. David asks her to please not let the awakening of these memories depress her: she’s an accomplished Doctor and valuable asset to the Instituto; she’s succeeded so well without having anyone by her side. Ana says too bad others don’t feel that way and, besides, she’s good at faking. “That’s why I need you in my area, because I can’t do it alone.” “No, you don’t need me,” David says as they face each other. “I will always need you.” Ana says with pleading, tear-brimmed eyes. David breaks the gaze by looking down briefly and then says, “Ana, there’s something you need to know about me….” KNOCK KNOCK!
Both are surprised to see Luis. He begs to return to work; he has to return to work; Susana cannot stand to be near him and blames him for Gabriel’s death. He has got to work to keep his mind and heart away from this tremendous grief that threatens to break him. Ana and David decide in a side bar that Luis can help cover the clinic today. Ana will watch him to make sure he’s okay and David goes to talk to Gonzalo as he promised Ana. Gonzalo is not surprised that Luis is taking refuge at work. It’s a shame that he and Susana are having problems right now. Gonzalo will talk to Luis.
The morning finds Daniel setting up the café for the day’s business. Long story short, he is not going back to the hospital, he’s a failure as a Doctor! Elena gives him a loving pep talk and shoos him to the hospital to do the work he loves and has earned the right to do! Later at the hospital, Daniel tells Tania about his family’s money problems and his Mom working alone at the café at a time when they need to earn more. She wants to help so agrees to cover some of his patients so he can help his Mom at the café.
Regina and Art talk to Erik’s mother. Erik desperately needs lots of blood; she needs to approach family members and friends. They discover Erik recently traveled to Chiapas. They know immediately what is wrong! They don’t tell her but rush off to look at lab results which later confirm their suspicion: Dengue fever! (Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms typically begin three to fourteen days after infection. These may include a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. Wikipedia). What’s the Chiapas connection? Apparently there was an outbreak in Chiapas, the current status of which I don’t know, but put your Google Machines to work! Here’s one report: (The full life cycle of dengue fever virus involves the role of the Aedes aegypti mosquito as a vector and humans as the main victim of an infection. Once infected, humans become the main carriers and multipliers of the virus, serving as a source of the virus for uninfected mosquitoes. The virus circulates in the blood of an infected person for 2-7 days. Severe Dengue Turns Deadly in Mexico. Regina says they need more blood, Eric has a rare blood type; Pam volunteers to donate, sharing his blood type. Erik will go to the ICU! Later, after giving blood, Tania catches up with her and tells her she, Tania, is organizing something for a special somebody. Hmmm. They go off to the cafeteria to chat about it.
Let’s finish with poor Erik, even though this scene takes place after the upcoming one. Art goes to the ICU to see Erik and his Mother. He explains how a little mosquito can cause so much damage with the aid of the super computer graphics. He describes how a virus from the mosquito invades a cell, replicates like crazy until the cell bursts, releasing the virus on other cells where the process repeats over and over. This particular cell attacks the platelets, tiny little circular cells that do not have a nucleus yet are important in blood clotting. The virus attacks these platelets, veins and other tissues, making tiny little wounds all throughout the body which then bleed and clot. Why is Erik’s case so severe: He took aspirin which inhibits blood clotting so it deactivated the few functioning platelets his body had and so he needs lots and lots of blood! Lucy, Erik’s Mom, understands and is rounding up the whole family to go through the blood donation process. She thanks Art and prays after he leaves.
Regina and Art are back in the staff area after having talked to Erik’s Mother, Lucy. Art wheels close to her and remarks how well they work together. He gently caresses her ear. Regina moves his hand and says, “Arturo, I have to tell you something. David and I are starting to go out.” Now, here’s where summary comes in and y’all are free to amplify as you wish and add your take on what unfolds. Art is shocked which turns into vigorous grilling which boils down to: How could you? You said you weren’t ready! I saw you first! You are mine! And [in what I think is a big hunk of projection] David is unstable! Art is deaf to Regina’s position: I said David and I are starting to go out! David is not like you think; you only know him professionally! He will not hurt me! Regina has to ask Art to lower his voice a couple of times! His eyes bulge, he bares his teeth and he is in her face as Regina cranks her neck several times. “Don’t make this harder than it is, please! I do care about you, but as a friend! Art angrily retorts that he think it best that he stay away from her. No, no! Regina doesn’t want this to change the great working relationship they have! “You know what you mean to me, and I can’t be near you if you are with him!” Art has sprouted bristles in his demeanor and affect as well as his voice and eyes: “This is going to be hard, but it’s best if our relationship is strictly professional!” Art springs up and bolts away, ignoring Regina calling after him. She releases her tension in a jagged sigh.
Whoa. We have a little scene of Cinthia calling Rafa who is looking foxy and vulnerable at the same time with his long locks resting softly on his shoulders. He is in a courtyard filled with the spray and mist of fountains glistening in the early morning sun. [Take that in, Peeps; breathe in through the nose, hold it, exhale through the mouth!] How is he? He’s good; therapy uncovered a lot of things. He is glad to hear her voice and would like to see her. They agree to meet after her shift is done.
Still stoked Rene approaches the ER. Daniel, Regina, Art and Cinthia are in the staff area. He tells them about the BIG BENEFIT GALA and invites them all to come! The GALA is going to raise money for all their areas! Regina asks and Rene confirms that Gonzalo knows all about it and is on board; he just wanted to tell them personally! After they disperse, Rene calls to “Dr. Guerrero” and asks how she is; is she happy here? Cinthia smiles congenially, yes, yes she’s happy. Does she need anything? “With my new role, I want to hear what everybody needs!” No, she doesn’t need anything right now. “Keep that beautiful smile, Dr. Guerrero!” Rene leaves and it’s time for Cinthia to have a “that was weird” expression.
While this is going on, the GALA planners at a women’s clothing boutique. Constanza finds a dress that she is gah gah for and simultaneously tries to pump Patricia for information about her relationship with Cinthia and who it is that is resistant to Cinthia’s being a Doctor. Patricia picks this up and flatly says, “I never said that.” Constanza flips quickly back to carrying on over the dress. Patricia makes a face after Constanza is back in the dressing room. [Yah. She’s got her number.] Const buys the dress after an embarrassing moment when her first credit card is rejected. She deflects her embarrassment onto hostility towards the shop. “Give me a pen to sign, if you can handle that!” Whatever Const!
Finally, Gonzalo goes to the OPC to talk to Luis. Luis tells him what’s going on between him and Susana. Gonzalo thinks it is okay that he’s doing something that makes him feel good at this terribly painful time. Gonzalo advises the sobbing Luis not to evade what he’s feeling, as painful as it is; facing the pain will lead to the cleansing and healing of his soul. If he does not allow this process to unfold, he will lose his way.
THE END FOR NOW
Lila, beautifully expressed. Your insight and ability to capture the emotions and events so perfectly is beyond impressive.
"The Galvans are broken; Susana is prostrate with grief on Gabriel’s bed, clutching his belongings. She cannot tolerate the sight, the sound; the nearness of Luis who clings to the box of Gabriel’s ashes begging and crying that he needs her, that he loves her. She tells him to leave"
.
As physical life has left Gabriel, Susana’s spiritual and emotional life has evaporated leaving Luis to absorb the unbearable loss of both.
“David listens; his acceptance and concern don’t dim the love light in his eyes”. My heart fluttered as I read your lovely phrase.
Further, “David tells Ana that she has not allowed this pain, that would have broken many others, to stop her from building a good life for herself. Ana’s eyes come out from the fog of memory as she looks at him”. How could I ever have thought this man rather cold and distant? His heart is huge and he is caring and generous with his words of encouragement.
Your information on Dengue fever was amazing. You go above and beyond to provide so much that adds to our understanding of these complicated medical lines. Hoping Erik survives.
Wondering when Art will either see or sense the inevitable. David and Regina are together and he is out of the running.
What does Tania have up her sleeve?
Thank you Lila. You've made my day. Cannot wait until tonight...
Diana
.
Excellent, Lila.
Luis really should not be at work now, but may not have a choice about this. Susanna is rejecting him and thanks to his dalliance with Paulina this could be the end of their marriage. She has no logical reason to blame either of them for Gabriel's death and she will need an experienced shrink.
There were comments yesterday or so about why there were no families of origin of hers or Luis', but this is fairly standard for series with this many characters. This would also open more Pandora's Boxes than this story needs.
This is definitely worth repeating: "The Galvans are broken; Susana is prostrate with grief on Gabriel’s bed, clutching his belongings. She cannot tolerate the sight, the sound; the nearness of Luis who clings to the box of Gabriel’s ashes begging and crying that he needs her, that he loves her. She tells him to leave" Luis needs to give her some time and space; the more he begs, the more resistance he will get.
So we finally got Ana's backstory. It must have been very difficult to be forgotten after her baby brother's death. How sad tha tshe practically grew up on her own. Though, I was really afraid that she was going to tell David that she had lost (his) baby.
Art is re-e-e-ally starting to scare me.
Diana, I think Tania is planning on something to make Daniel feel better...just my guess :-)
Thanks dear LILA, aka David freak fan. Me too of course. He was at his best in this episode comforting Regina and supporting Ana. Plus he was about to tell the latter that he and Regina are going out when Luis knocked at the door. Sigh.
When you mentioned David's "look of love", my mind immediately flipped to the Brazil 66 song, The Look of Love. Happily, it will be playing in my brain all day. And loved your description of the hug and "calls her to his arms with a simple "Ven". Ah yes, that was sweet.
Also liked this description: "Ana's eyes come out from the fog of memory." Excellent.
As for the episode, I was really enjoying the skeptical, c'mon now look in Gonzalo's eyes as René burbled and chirped about how he was Gonzalo's biggest supporter and was so excited about all he was doing for the director. Gonz is not fooled at all by René, but the devious dolt thinks he's got him snowed just like the under-secretary. Can't wait for this to blow up in the rat's face.
Arturo, alas, in spite of his lovely eyes and smile, was at his stalker worst in this one. And have to agree that it's "a big hunk of projection" to label David as unstable. Mind you, he could be. But so could Arturo. Rounding the corner immediately after a girlfriend's bloody suicide in hot pursuit of a colleague is hardly stable behavior. It reeks of desperation at the very least.
As for Luis coming to work, what else can he do? Sitting at home in that house of misery, ruminating about his son's death and his wife's rejection can't lead to anything good. I'd rather see him working. Generally men can compartmentalize and focus completely on the task at hand. He's a trained, capable physician. Better he should be working and doing good, rather than at home wallowing in guilt and sorrow. What good is that? He'll have plenty of time to grieve every night when his shift at the hospital is over.
Susana is the one I worry about. She has no job. No career. And the maid evidently did the housework and cooking. So her only focus was her only child. I can't imagine how one would deal with that. Just such crushing sorrow. How does one go on?
People do. They volunteer in some cause that addresses the disease that killed their child. They seek out the support of friends or their spouse. But oh my...I know this is just a story, but when a parent loses a child, and there are no other children one must "be strong" for...it's beyond devastating. I cringe even when it's just fiction.
Gracias, Diana! Susana clearly told Luis that the only thing that bound them together was gone, so their promise to Gabriel to stay together was essentially null and void!
Ah! Diana, thank goodness for Regina/David and Cinthia/Rafa or this thing would be too bleak!!
How could I ever have thought this man rather cold and distant? His heart is huge and he is caring and generous with his words of encouragement.
Yes, Diana! Regina is bringing this out in him! He's NOT unstable like Art thinks! There is a side of David that is, of course, inaccesible to Art. Ana certainly sees it and she wants it! YIKES!
You are welcome on the medical information! OMgosh! That Erik was in BAD SHAPE when he came in. I'm like, don't let another young person die!!
Isn't this fun, Diana! When do you think the GALA will be? Probably Friday night! Thanks, Hon!
Gracias, Urbanita! Oh, poor Luis! My gosh! Luis needs an emergency psych referral. He is in bad shape! How in the world is he going to attend to even the simplest malady!!
Urban, this is exactly what I was thinking about the Doc's families:
There were comments yesterday or so about why there were no families of origin of hers or Luis', but this is fairly standard for series with this many characters. This would also open more Pandora's Boxes than this story needs.
Yah. They'd need 4 seasons to cover the drama!
Thank you, Urban, and back in a flash, my other Peeps! I see you!
Hola y gracias, Rgv Chick! You are so right! Luis needs Susana so much but she. just. cannot! Not now! They could mend their relationship in the future, but I agree: how many ways can she tell him she needs some space! I couldn't bear to describe these two in more detail. All these actors absolutely nailing it!
Poor Ana. Yes, I never thought I'd say this, but I wanted to give her a hug. I almost wanted David to, but you know Regina would walk in right at that moment, flip her hair and walk away in a twit!
Rgv Chick! I never thought of this:
Though, I was really afraid that she was going to tell David that she had lost (his) baby.
Thank goodness the novela gods didn't think of THAT one! That would have been disatrous!
Art is re-e-e-ally starting to scare me.
Uh, yah, my man totally went off the deep end and what's so scary about it, I think he can fall even deeper! Look out Regina!!
“He fortifies her and we shameless David freaks for the coming day”
YES!!! Lol. I loved the whole little scene with Regina pouting and David saying he’d miss her more, it was cute.
Speaking of shameless- yes, I am lol. When David and Ana were talking the camera was up close to David’s face and I couldn’t stop thinking about how gorgeous he is haha.
David told Ana “there’s something I want you to know and I want you to hear it from me.” I think he was going to tell her about Regina, but since he didn’t get a chance to, Ana will probably make a big fuss about it once she finds out
Art is scary. I had a feeling since the very beginning that he was unhinged. HE is unstable! His whole argument was absurd- “how could you give David an opportunity? I saw your first!” Seriously?! And him saying he can’t even work with her, ummm she’s your BOSS.
I did feel like Art saying David would hurt her was a projection, but I hope not. I mean with this being a TN, the main couple has to break up at least once. But here they waited so long to get together that it doesn’t seem right to break them up right after they finally got together. *sigh* I guess we’ll see.
Jud-dayB! Whaasuuup!? Oh, wasn't our David just Beauty-full! Oh, I could snatch that man right out of the screen! What a fine specimen of humanity, that one! AY!!!
When you mentioned David's "look of love", my mind immediately flipped to the Brazil 66 song, The Look of Love
Oh yes, that's what I was going for, without a link! One of my all time favorite love songs! Lorty! And Judy, you know me and my "Ven" or "Come here" from a man! Umph! Umph! Umph! Man, just that little scene is helping wash away what a downer these past few episodes have been!
Gonz is not fooled at all by René, but the devious dolt thinks he's got him snowed just like the under-secretary. Can't wait for this to blow up in the rat's face
Judy, Rene was so excited, I almost was believing him and even feeling sorry for the major blow up we know is coming! You know, wanting to draw donors to the Instituto and thus decrease government subsidies is not Evil...it's Rene's way of going about it; AND his theft, part of which Diego is being blamed for. But I guess if he weren't devious in the achievement of his goals, it wouldn't be a soap opera, would it?
And Art. Lord. Have. Mercy! BINGO:
Rounding the corner immediately after a girlfriend's bloody suicide in hot pursuit of a colleague is hardly stable behavior. It reeks of desperation at the very least.
ITA about Luis, Amiga, ITA. I'm going to end up copying your whole comment. Y'all go back and read what Judy said about Luis working. AND Susana. Before the tragedy unfolded, one our Patio friends said that they wanted to like her, but she didn't give us anything: just "hanging around" the house doting on Gabriel and waiting for Luis to be late. Pobrecita. Yes, JudyB, it's an excruciatingly painful topic, fiction or no! Your empathy is soothing.
Thanks, Amiga!
SpanProf!!! Howdy y gracias! Yah, cool as a cucumber Art, he of the brilliant smile, is scaring us! It may well be a good thing that a future Psychiatrist takes a shining to him. Pun intended? No! Perish the thought! Pamela's too nice!
Yo, UnOp! Come on down, Girl!
Speaking of shameless- yes, I am lol. When David and Ana were talking the camera was up close to David’s face and I couldn’t stop thinking about how gorgeous he is haha.
There are special "shameless for Dave" chairs at his table. UnOp, we are there!!!
Thank you for this more accurate translation, UnOp:
David told Ana “there’s something I want you to know and I want you to hear it from me.” ITA with your prediction!
The part I felt was most projection of Art's revelatory verbal explosion was him saying David was unstable. Yah, his "argument" was absurd and should be a warning for Regina. She should tell David about it but she would have to beg mightily for him not to confront Art about it. That Regina, she just drives some men bonkers!
I hope you're not right about this:
I mean with this being a TN, the main couple has to break up at least once. But here they waited so long to get together that it doesn’t seem right to break them up right after they finally got together. *sigh* I guess we’ll see.
WAAAAAAH! Thanks, UnOp!!
Excellent work, Lila. Loved every word!
I missed Ana’s confession to David about her family. Ugh lol that’s what I get for not paying attention. And clearly David was about to tell her about his relationship with Regina. I’m guessing her reaction when she eventually finds out may be similar to Art’s.
I can’t predict what I think will happen to Luis and Susana. I want to believe they’ll get through the pain and loss together but at the moment, Susana is clearly too distraught and won’t change her mind about who she thinks is at fault. Stuff happens and sometimes it’s no ones fault but she isn’t seeing it that way.
I want to hate Rene but he’s just so amusing to watch. I don’t anticipate Cinthia being all that happy if she attends the gala. Gonna be quite the surprise for her.
Thank you, TF!!! This show was one for people showing a different side of themselves: Ana's helpless vulnerability and pleading for David to share her workload--and life; Art's nearly screeching possessiveness and Rene's comical desperation to please the healthcare big wigs and have Gonzo see him as a good guy! No,René was not repulsive in this show. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, he was so enthusiastic, I almost want him to succeed and have to make myself remember his theft and his refusal to give Instituto Doc's even a price break for healthcare, even in the case of poor Gabriel's demise!
The GALA is going to be the bomb in a number of ways. One almost expects another double episode (gosh forbid!) but with Emperio just starting, that's not likely to happen. Maybe it will happen over tonight and Friday!
Thank you, TF!
Lila, thank you for another excellent lilacap.
Work is often a way to distract oneself from heartache. When you are grieving, you look for anything that might relieve the pain for a bit .When my dad died, I told my boss that I could teach my classes if she didn't tell my students what had happened However, when I returned to classes after the funeral, my students knew that I had lost my dad, and there's was the hard part as past and present students all stopped by my classroom to express their sympathy. After our first baby died, my husband asked if it would be okay with me if He went to softball practice . He told me that he just had to hit something and batting practice would help. I completely understood. When a couple loses a child, it either tears them apart or brings them closer together . Grief can make you sad and\or mad.
"When a couple loses a child, it either tears them apart or brings them closer together . Grief can make you sad and\or mad" was so true Susanlynn.
Everyone grieves in their own way. There is no right or wrong, only what is right for that particular person.
Sending you hugs this evening and always.
Diana
Thank you Susanlynn! and Diana! You are so right. It's a pain that one can mentally acknowledge is oppressive, but one which you secretly hope, even as you express your sympathy, that you never truly understand as do those who are living it. Just excruciating. That is why, even in a fictional story, I cannot and will not mock or judge a grieving Mother OR Father. I know this show isn't over, I hope there are not too many more deaths. Let us have some silly villains doing stuff we know they're going to get busted for; let our lovers quarrel but stay together. Oh well, we have no control over that but you and everyone on our little Patio have helped make these past rough novela weeks bearable. Let's have this big ole GALA and have some fun with that!
So...I guess we will all be getting into our gowns and tiaras for the BIG GALA, right ? ...or maybe our jammies and fuzzy slippers .
I'm looking forward to a fall cooldown so I can comfortably do my fleece jammies, slipper socks and cinnamon apple tea!
That, and seeing if, after five years, popcorn still makes me fat!
