Imperio de Mentiras Lunes 9/21/20, Gran Estreno The Prime Suspect

Not my best literary work, but this tale moves too fast for that. Just remember that with this producer you are not guaranteed predictability or a happy ending. – Urban Anthropologist

Monterrey, Mexico:
Undercover police detective Leonardo Velasco kept in touch with his tech team while on his way to meet a suspect in the carnival area. A thug came up from behind, holding a gun to his back and telling him to keep walking. He was hoping to get away from any possibility of being watched or ambushed. A bald man watched them from behind, pretending to eat popcorn.

Finally Leonardo stopped, turned around, and asked to see “the merchandise.” The an said not without showing the money. Leonardo tried to delay this, the bald man ran up to them to warn his accomplice the police were in the area. The accomplice shot Leonardo, grabbed his bag, and ran. It did not look as though anyone noticed.

New York City:
In an art gallery belonging to her family, Elisa Cantú presented an exhibition of Mexican artifacts. She talked about a legendary woman who – rather than take on a traditional female role – searched for precious stones, showing off items made from them.

Monterrey:
Leonardo's kevlar vest served him well on this occasion. Although his chest hurt as he looked inside his jacket, there was no blood. His colleagues ran to help him and the chase began. He spotted the bald man amid the noise and flashing lights. He stood at the front end of a car, pistol drawn, while watching for his quarry. He finally entered the enclosure of transport trucks and looked around. He saw no one, then climbed onto one outside, only to be seen again by the bald man. He attacked from behind and a fight began. Backlit by the bright lights of the carnival they fought until Leonardo bested him and held him at gunpoint, telling him he had better talk.

He must have because immediately after Leonardo and his team entered one of the transport trucks and found “the merchandise”: children being trafficked for a variety of nefarious purposes by the bald man's paymaster.

New York City:
Elisa continued greeting the attendees who then were walking around, drinking champagne, and hobnobbing. She turned around at the sound of a very familiar voice to find her father, whom she had not expected. He told her he could not miss her inauguration of this exhibit or... her opening of her first gallery in Mexico. He had just bought it for her, for his tesoro. She hugged him again.

Monterrey:
With much pomp and circumstance Leonardo was presented with an award for the rescue of the children, who were there when the medal was pinned on him.

Mexico City:
A few days later, Elisa was returning just as Leonardo was proposing marriage to his girlfriend, Julia. He presented the ring as they were dining in an elegant restaurant... with all the other patrons not only watching but applauding.

Elisa's family was in an art gallery when Augusto apparently arrived late. He apologized for that, then left his wife – Victoria – with the Serranos, saying he had things to attend to. Victoria indicated her displeasure at this, which was interrupted by the arrival of her younger daughter, Maria José, who was looking for her father. Victoria indicated where he had gone and after a few familial kisses, Maria José was off. It was her birthday and she thanked Augusto for her gift. He told her there was more to come but she would find out about that at a later date.

His manner changed at the sight of Renata, his eldest daughter, whom he immediately scolded for drinking again. He reproached her companion, Marcelo, for not having stopped her. He wordlessly took the glass from Renata's hand as she non-apologized to her father for spoiling the birthday of his “spoiled daughter.” She clearly felt little or no kinship with her two younger sisters and the manner of her dress displayed this. It was also spectacularly unflattering.

Augusto started to reproach her, but stopped when Elisa arrived with Fernanda Navarro, her best friend. Maria José ran back to her mother to tell her that Elisa had arrived. Elisa looked up at the sign and said “No, it can't be...” Everyone applauded and smiled.

Everyone except Renata.

Julia told Leonardo that her father was going in for surgery and asked whether they could postpone the wedding for two or three months. She then told Leonardo she would no longer fit into the dress she was then wearing and he guessed the reason...she was pregnant. He was very happy.

Augusto had obviously been giving a speech in Elisa's honor, which he concluded by saying he was so proud of her. Everyone applauded this time, but Renata did not smile as the others did.

Leonardo and Julia broke the news to her family, who were happy as clams. Her father broke out the mescal.

Leonardo left for work, telling Julia to spend the night with her family and they would spend the entire day together the next day.

Renata and her companion ha a difference of opinion, which ended with him walking out.

Victoria heard a message notification on Augusto's phone and was not pleased at what she saw. He returned to the table.

“Someone is waiting for you,” she said.

“It's a video conference with some investors,” he said. “I'll see you at home.” He kissed her on the cheek and left.

On his way out he promised to dine with Elisa the next day and she hugged and kissed him. Victoria told Elisa and Maria José she was leaving. As Elisa thanked her for the party she said not to be too late.

Leonardo arrived at the station and told his colleagues about the proposal and the postponement. They were happy to hear he had presented the ring. Then a call came in “Double homicide. Man and woman, on the inside of a car, by gunshot.” He almost didn't accompany them, but finally did.

Elisa and Maria José arrived at home and were greeted by Marcita, the housekeeper, who said they were the first ones home. They thought this odd because their mother had left earlier than they had. They were then told that their mother had left alone, not with the chauffeur. Elisa tried calling her, but got her voice mail.

Leonardo arrived at the crime scene. His colleagues talked with the officer at the scene, hearing that both victims had been shot in the head. They looked inside the car and recognized the female victim as Julia, their colleague's fiancée. They tried to prevent Leonardo from approaching the car, but could not. He was shocked, hurt, sad, and everything else at once.

Victoria returned to her elegant home in the clothes she had worn at the party and her fur coat. She sat on one of the chairs, staring at the room.

José Luis Velasco arrived at the crime scene. The female detective told him that Julia was dead. They had not know this before asking Leonardo to accompany them. He went to his brother, who was still holding Julia's hand. He explained he had left her at her family's home before coming on duty and that she had been pregnant. He began to cry.

Another cop had checked the wallet of the male victim: Augusto Cantú, owner of a construction company.

Marcita found Victoria in the dining room and said her daughters had been worried about her. She said she was alright. The housekeeper told her that her daughters were in their rooms and Victoria said she should go back to sleep. Victoria did not move.

The following morning around dawn the police arrived at the Cantú residence and showed Augusto's driver's license to Elisa. Victoria, Renata, and Maria José came out of the house. The detective told them that Augusto had been murdered. Renata looked as though she would have a seizure. Victoria froze.

Leonardo had to inform Julia's family. He chose to go in alone.

Elisa went to the morgue to identify her father's body. She cried and was escorted out of the room by a detective as Leonardo entered. The coroner pulled out the drawer and he looked at Julia's lifeless body.

He promised to find her killer, kissed her for the last time, and walked out crying.

Elisa was telling a senior officer that her father had competitors, but no enemies. In the adjacent room on the other side of the one-way window Leonardo asked his female colleague about Julia's personal effects. She told him they had to be examined by the lab. Both turned to the window as their colleague showed a photo of Julia to Elisa and asked whether she recognized her. Elisa replied that she did not. She knew all her father's employees and this woman was not one of them. Leonardo was told that Elisa was the male victim's daughter. He continued to watch as the bald cop asked Elisa if she knew what they had been doing in the car that night. She replied with a question: “Are you assuming that they were lovers?” He said he was assuming nothing, but Elisa responded that if she had been it had to be because she was after his money.

This caused Leonardo to burst into the room, angry at this accusation. There was an argument, which the other police had to break up.

At Julia's funeral her mother gave Leonardo the birthday gift her daughter had bought for him.

She left him alone in her room and he looked at her scrapbook, where he found the business card to Elisa's gallery. He pocketed it and looked at the engagement ring. At the cemetery he asked Julia's little sister if Julia had ever said where she was going that night or mentioned Augusto Cantú and she said – several times – that she had not.

Augusto's funeral had mourners outside the family, but was silent as Victoria and her daughters put flowers on the grave.

When Elisa was alone with Eugenio she asked whether he knew the woman who had died with her father. He said he knew nothing about this. He then went to join Victoria. He briefly embraced Maria José on the way.

When Elisa started to leave she was seized from behind be an armed man who pressed a gun into her back and covered her mouth. He then demanded she shut up and said “We know your father well. He was a wretched thief..” When she tried to move he said “No, no, no, no, no, no, no. If you move it makes me nervous an I might shoot. Your father stole something worth millions and you have to take over and return what is ours. A short while ago he took some archaeological pieces that should have come into our hands. Your disgraceful father stole them and you will have to return them. I you don't I will kill your family, starting with her. You have 24 hours to return them. This is between you and me. Don't dare tell your family or the police or else. 24 hours.” He shoved her forward toward the photo of her father ad left. She then ran to her sister and hugged her.

At the Cantú residence Eugenio helped himself to some booze, poured some for Victoria, and talked about decisions regarding Grupo Cantú. Elisa and Maria José arrived and Elisa told him “Not now” as she went upstairs. Renata and Marcelo watched as Maria José sat next to her mother, who looked as though she had aged ten years.

The next morning Leonardo returned to the crime scene while Elisa checked the internet for what was being said about the crime. She became increasingly nervous.

Her cell rang and it was the man who had threatened her. “Have you started looking for what belongs to us? Don't waste any time. Think about your little sister.” After the call ended she locked the door and looked into the safe, but could not decide what to do. She looked around the house and finally decided that the next day they should leave for New York. She told Maria José she could continue her studies and establish herself. Victoria didn't think it was a bad idea but asked if they could go a bit later. Elisa was firm on this and said she would buy the tickets.

Leonardo looked at the videos on his cell phone, torturing himself. Later he met with his colleagues to ask what they found out about Augusto Cantú. They told him that Sr Cantú was head of a construction company and there were art galleries but those were in his daughter's name. He showed them the business card he had found in Julia's room. He was sure that Elisa knew something. His female colleague did not agree that this was absolute.

Renata stood in the shower fully clothed and dripping wet as her memories and/or delusions went through her head. She imagined an argument with her father. Marcelo ran downstairs to tell Victoria Renata was “having another crisis” which caused Victoria and Maria José to run up to Renata's bathroom. He grabbed Renata from behind and made her sit down.

Elise asked Eugenio's help to get Maria José out of the country. She told him that it was to protect her sister from what was to come. She had met with Alfonso Tijera, the company administrator, who showed her proof that her father had massive debts, the company was in the red, and that Augusto was going to start selling off parts of his interests. She desperately needed his help. He told her not to worry; he would take care of everything. He would purchase the company and she and her family would not have to see it go out of their hands. She cried as she thanked him.

The next day Elisa was taking Maria José to the airport. Victoria took more time to say goodbye and Elisa said they would miss the plane. She told Maria José to call upon arrival and then Maria José got into the car. However while on the highway two cars went after them until they were forced to stop. Several armed and masked men came out of the cars and demanded that the two sisters leave the car. They decided not to wait and pulled them out and forced them into the van at gunpoint, most likely getting their jollies from their screams. Traffic passed by during the kidnapping, as though nobody cared.

Their leader removed his mask and yelled to the other men “Let's go!”

The sisters were taken to a rundown shack in the woods, their faces having been covered so they could not see the route. The hoods were removed and Elisa saw the face of her tormentor. “You thought we were playing games, didn't you?” he asked. He di not look for an answer, but nodded to the others who whipped out a knife that the oldest one held to Maria José's throat. Elisa began shouting that her sister knew nothing and to please leave her alone. The mastermind demanded silence, then signaled to the other to put away the knife. He had Elisa's cell phone in his hand, knowing that it would have GPS on it. He then informed Elisa that she would have to obey every one of his demands and maybe they would return her sister to her alive. “It's simple; you return what is mine and I will return your sister. If you turn off the phone your sister will die. If you call the police, your sister will die. If you're late answering, guess what? Your sister will die.” They then put the hood back on Elisa and dragged her back to the car, leaving Maria José crying.

Later – or the following day – Elisa went to her father's corporate office where Leonardo was waiting for her. He said they needed to talk. He held up her business card, asking if it was hers. He said it was in the possession of the woman found in the car with her father. Her phone began ringing. She looked at the screen and answered. That same tormenting voice demanded to know whom she was talking to. She said to please do nothing as she looked around, knowing she was being watched. “Who is he? Is he your boyfriend? Answer me.”

“He's my boyfriend,” she said. “I swear it, I swear it.”

The call ended. She put away the phone, walked up to Leonardo and whispered to embrace her. He complied, perhaps reluctantly, then seemed to understand what was up. They faced each other and kissed.

My apologies to our readers, as the new site is making the process up uploading photos more difficult. The rest of the photos will be added in the morning. Unfortunately, this is likely to mean far fewer -- if any -- photos in future entries.

Thank you, Urban. Sorry to hear that the new posting process has turned out to be a pain for photo posting. Anyway, your recaps are always excellent with or without photos.

I enjoyed the first episode and the fast pace. It looks like there will be plenty of mysteries to be solved. Lots of familiar faces in this one.

Thank you so much for this recap, Urban! You did a fantastic job and the photos were great!

I just stumbled upon this novela today. I went to my Univision app to watch another capitulo of Mi Carazon es Tuyo and saw that this series started today. And then I saw that you were recapping it! So I had to see it!

This was very well done and kept me on my toes, but it's very intense. I'm not sure if I will be in it for the long haul. I'll give it a few more days. It certainly is starting out great and has lots of familiar faces too.

UA: Thank you very much for the detailed recap & nice pictures. Looking forward to seeing this Telenovela.

Thank you Urban, detailed and great as always, you never disappoint. A lot morer photos in this episode would not have added a whole lot anyway.

A. Kidnapping. So did Elisa think those cars were simply BLM/Antifa who were going to peacefully drag them from their cars and beat the priviledge out of them so no harm no foul? Nobody saw anything or called the cops? WOW. I wondered, where do these crooks get these kidnapping hoods? I searched for CuidaddeMexicoCrooksSupply.com, CrookedChic.com, MuggingandMayhem.com but Nada. I even tried ebay, thinking these new crooks are pretty modern, but nothing. The closest I could find was those Covid masks which cover from your eyes down to your collar bone. As though when the virus sees that the exits are blocked on the way out to get some hapless Grama with COPD, it will try to drill it's way out through your neck to get her.

B. That was so romantic when Leo proposed to Julia, my dog and I were both almost in tears. Having been married several times, we knew what he was unwittingly setting himself up for. And what a lucky break with the ring for Leo. Even those undertakers are gossipy, he could not go to them and say, “Um can you save the ring, I think I have another candidate.” It would be 'out there' before he got to his car.

C. Familiar faces. Well, I know I have seen too many Telenovelas when I recognize darn near every actor in a new one. Poor Susanna Gonzales. I have lusted for her for decades, and now in this one she looks like an aging hippie someone cleaned up a little. She just needs some cheap beads and bigger flowers on her dress. But I still love her.

D. Modern women. It was so refreshing to see Elisa get into HER car and drive away, like 99.99 per cent of people do, rather than having the stupid chofer like usual. TN's which have typically shown women and cars in the past as though they were too pampered and or dumb to work anything more complicted than a light switch. Remember Fabniola and Ramon Testosterone trying to teach her twenty-something ass to drive? Unless of course it was trickery and destroying lives, then we have seen some diabolical Einsteins. Hmmmm....

E. Fake boyfriend. Clever, glomming onto Leo with a nice lip lock. This could be real fun. “Noooo, they know my BF and I always sneak off to Motel 6 on Wednesdays, and they prob have cameras hidden in our room so.....................”

Urban, you did an amazing job with this fast and furious first episode.

I'm going to have to go back and reread your recap at least once more as I need time to put the names with the faces.

I'm very intrigued as to what the relationship between Julia and Eliza's father was. I suspect that will not be revealed for some time.

Murders and mayhem have already ensued. Kidnapping, extortion, blackmail, dysfunctional family, check, check, check - this had it all. And much more.

"Renata...clearly felt little or no kinship with her two younger sisters and the manner of her dress displayed this. It was also spectacularly unflattering" was one of your many perfect observations. Your pictures were excellent and the recap was stellar.

Like Kirby, I cringed at seeing my favorite actor the radiant, luminous Susana reduced to playing such a surly, jealous and mentally unstable character. And looking positively frumpy doing so.

Angelique commands every scene she is in. Have to admit, I think she and Leonardo will melt the screen.

Thank you Urban!

Diana

Super debut URBAN, and so glad that you were able to upload some photos in spite of the difficulty. The dramatic shots of the ferris wheel and other rides against the night sky, as the darkened figures fought (seemingly) to the death was very dramatic.

I find the color palette of this depressing however. Everyone looks wan and washed out. A clue indeed that there may not be a Happy Ending in this one.

You were in full command, m'dear. All the names, all the action, all the details. Congratulations for an excellent debut that should draw in many viewers and I hope, commenters. Your hard work certainly deserves it. Which goes for the rest of your excellent team as well.

Urban, thank you for getting us off to a great start with your excellent recap . wow You really had to hit The ground running with this show. It is going to be a wild ride. I like all The familiar faces . Susana Gonzales looks so different that I hardly recognized her . That wig she is wearing is horrible . hit

I have seen Angelique in many telenovelas and she gets better and better. I think that she and Susana were in the same bailando show years ago. You used to be able to watch their dances on YouTube . They are both good dancers .

Okay, fasten your seatbelts . It is going to be a wild ride , folks .

Chilly and sunny here today . Stay well and safe, all. ❤

Thanks, Urban. I was looking forward to this gran estreno and even more so to read your interpretation. Awesome as always! As Diana indicated, this was fast and furious and you caught it all.

Jarifa, there are definitely lots of mysteries to solve, and OMGoodness, all the LIES! Imperio de Mentiras is the perfect title for this.

Two Black and White Cats, I have to agree with you, this is quite a production! And the music is exceptional. I recognized Carlos Rivera who sings "Otras Vidas" (the main couples theme song) right away. He also sang the theme song in "Amar a Muerte."

Kirby, so glad to see you back on a patio!! Looking forward to your view and interpretation of the events, always a fun read :-) "I searched for CuidaddeMexicoCrooksSupply.com, CrookedChic.com, MuggingandMayhem.com but Nada." Maybe you searched in the wrong language ??? LOL

I have to agree with Diana and Kirby, Susana looks horrid with those bangs. I wonder if she borrowed the wig that Michelle Renaud wore on "Hijas de la Luna" Despite the "aging hippie " hippie look, Susana's performance is exceptional as always...and as is everyone elses!

Diana, "Angelique commands every scene she is in. Have to admit, I think she and Leonardo will melt the screen." I've never really been an AB fan, but I have to admit that she is an outstanding performer. She was excellent in "Amar a Muerte" and now she is indeed commanding every scene. Oooh, and I also agree that she and Andres will melt the screen. I was one that had said that Andres was usually "cold" in his previous TN roles, but he sure is HAWT in this one...and not just in his looks! :-)

I was really surprised that Leo didn't question Julia's sister more. She sure did seem nervous; he should have caught on to that.

More photos up now. I originally had 54 of them but ended up leaving some out. The ones after the 14th one took 90 minutes to put in. Back during Cuna de Lobos it only took about half an hour to insert 40 photos. I don't know what I will do when/if PASL has a third season.

Kirby, great observation about the kidnapping situation. However, I don't think that the police could have done much unless they would have been willing to risk landing a copter on the highway. A copter that couldn't hold a big enough SWAT team. It also looked as though there wouldn't have been adequate time to do this. As the photo shows, there was no way Elisa could have driven out of there without getting shot.

I doubt that any undertaker would risk stealing the engagement ring of a decorated cop's dead fiancee.

I agree that SG looks degraded, but that is standard for mental illness in TNs. I hope the hair is a wig because this style is so unflattering. She does, however, enjoy playing crazy. And evil. As to looking frumpy, I suspect that beautiful women like SG don't mind being frumped down for a role if it has some meat to it. At least she is still beautiful on her own time.

It annoys me that we don't know the name of the female detective and I don't remember the actress's name.

Many novela heroines are very modern. They become doctors, lawyers, and corporate executives as well as just being daughters of wealth... or poverty. There aren't many Cinderellas anymore, but we do get some Cinderfellas here and there.

Gracias, Judy. I always try to get as much detail as possible in a first episode because we never know what will be important later, especially in this kind of story. Although I think those who know my past work might realize that I miss the tales of the rich and shameless.

Thank you, Urban. An intense start to this story but that’s not entirely surprising with a GG production.

It seems like there are a few potential scenarios and suspects involved in the deaths of Augusto and Julia. And what happened to the engagement ring? Hmmm.....

According to the cast list the female detective’s name is Andrea and is played by Luz Ramos who starred in Caer En Tentación as Laura, the reporter.

Although Leo is a detective and it was his fiancée, I don’t think it’s wise that he has any involvement in the case. Fiction or not there’s no way anyone would just be able to burst into an interrogation room the way that he did.

I’m in agreement with everyone about SG’s hairstyle in this but I guess it kinda does fit the character given the introduction we got to her. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Renata in this story.

The last twenty minutes or so of the episode seemed to set the stage for what’s potentially to come. I’m sure it’ll be a wild ride.

Great estreno, Urban! You clinched it despite the blogsite hardships. You filled in some of the ensuing blank spots for me and much appreciate that. "Traffic passed by during the kidnapping, as though nobody cared." --Does seem to be a running theme or some sort of cultural pastime, doesn't it? Actually, I think your straight forward 'just the facts ma'am' style recap this time matched the pace perfectly and editing. You really captured the cop aura of this one. Brava!

You also nailed it by noticing the down-dressed, drab, and dowdy de Renata, not to mention her meaner demeanor at Prissy Sissies' and Papi's gallery inaugural. I have to admit Susana plays the nutty, frowsy eldest sister to perfection and it's why we're going to love watching the whole family interaction in this tn. She already makes me want to escape the miniature manicomio called a household.
Kirby, Diana, RGV, Judy B, Susanlynn Dittos to your comentarios. Two Cats, nice to meet ya. Steve and Kirby on this one together again is going to be very dangerous. Kirby--you and your dog as well as the observant radical rant left me ROTFLOL. We need a few more laughs at ourselves these days and you certainly hit the mark. Thanks!

P.S. I meant to add Jarifa in there also. I don't know how to delete and republish comments on this new interface. Also, I no longer seem to have priviledges as before so I cannot edit or delete comments on other's posts as before. Don't know if I will be able to delete trolls on my page or not folks. Just an FYI.

I have personally been wondering not only how Julia is mixed up in all this, but who really was the bad guy in the trafficking of artifacts.

The kidnappers definitely look and behave like a criminal organization. Was Augusto the legitimate buyer here and these sadists the thieves?

Was Julia involved with Augusto and if so was he the father of her baby? If that is the case it would destroy Leo.

Did anyone else suspect Victoria in the double murder? Leticia Calderon has played villanas before this and it's obvious that there was marital discord.

What is Eugenio's involvement in all this?

What is Renata's mental illness? Why is she not in a manicomio (other than the fact that not being so serves the story)? Is she a suspect in all this? Her resentment of her two sisters makes her one.

Well, Victoria is looking very guilty of "something". Don't know if it's the murder, but the fact that she drove herself rather than going with a chauffeur...and got home much later than her daughters looks very suspicious indeed. Also, she looked terrible in that velour jump suit she was wearing. After a certain age, all our avoirdupois goed into the belly and the profile shot of her in that was so NOT flattering. Leticia C. should have kicked the wardrobe department people. She's a lovely woman but you have to choose your styles carefully after a certain age.

Urban you hit it out of the ballpark as usaul.

I only saw the last few minutes of this tn but it was sizzling hot.
When she went in for that kiss his nether parts was probly going julia
Who?

That guy that suppose to be a good friend and business partner with daddy, I dont know if I trust him. He's Gonna buy the business so they wont Loose any money. Is there something wrong with this picture?

Why was daddy in the car with a pregnant lady whose engaged to a
Hot cop. One would think that mom did the shooting the way she came back to the house and just stared at the room. Yep, lots of big mysteries to uncover.

This gonna be good yall, take our minds off of real life messes.

Hi ya kirby. Always fun to get your
Spin On stuff. SussyQ how you? Looks like the ol gang is coming back together with some new patio
Pals.

Ok back to work for me. Thank you
Urban, this was yummy. Stay safe yall.

Ps, High jardinero654 hi TF who I don't remember but Hi anyways and two cats nice to meetcha. Welcome to the patio and happy first day of Fall🍁🍂yall.

UA you definitely raised two important questions: was Victoria involved? And, was Augusto the father of Julia’s baby?

I wonder if the theory about the baby would even cross Leo’s mind. Everyone on both sides is obviously wondering why Julia and Augusto were in the car together and how they knew each other etc.

Kirby: I just don't quite trust Elisa based on her body language.

TF, it could be many episodes before we know the answers to those questions. However, since GG's series tend to have around 65 episodes and the Turkish series this is based on ran 54 episodes, we will not have to wait months. This series is likely to end just before Christmas.

Steve, yeah, she is kinda one of those 'wiggle talker' chicks. When she talks her whole body pitches in and helps out. You can never trust those. Were those actual jeans she looked to have grown into, or was it a pair of those leggings with the jeans pockets, zipper and belt loops printed on? Asking for a friend. Woof.

But, she truly did look scared, and she made the surprise believable when she got her new gallery. But now if it were Irina Baever, I would for sure not trust her.

N I N A ! Where've you been? :-)

Wow, this is an ambitious TN. I was connected the entire episode. I think there is much more to the problems of the Empresa Cantu, Sr. Serrano, Victoria and the art underworld. I don't know for sure what Elisa does or does not know. Lots of secretos, cover ups, mentiras, convenient and inconvenient liaisons. Quite engaging.

The engagement ring was in Julia's bedroom. Leo found it after his to be suegra gave him the birthday gift Julia bought for Leo: the watch. He then goes through Julia's scrap book where he finds the Cantu business card.

The kidnap was predictable in the sense that Elisa did not have a driver, is used to a certain amount of autonomy, living in NYC and not driving. Elisa isn't quite savvy enough to realize she is being watched until it is too late. Now she knows, after being kidnapped and pulling Leo in to help keep her from the extortionists who is watching her.
It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
I will be watching with interest.

Yeah, mysteries galore. I was thinking, obviously anyone would wonder why Julia was not wearing the ring. But also, in a scene or two, we saw that Leo was already wearing one of those gigantic wristwatches that are kinda ghetto cool right now. It may have been when he was holding Julia's hand in the proposal. They are usually accompanied with the Mr. T starter kit gold chains. So if he already had an expensive watch, would he want a second one? Remember, we do not see superfluous things such as gifts in TNs . Everything has at least one strand of plot DNA in it. This one is going to be another one where we are going to have to keep notes.

Something I found kinda interesting and coincidental is that this is the second time that Angelique has played a character named Elisa and also both times her character’s father’s name is Augusto.

I’m amazed that the kidnapper approached Elisa at the cemetery unnoticed. That’s kinda scary.

URBAN, for this not being your best literary work, you sure make it look effortlessly - you have such a way with words, you make even the dullest tale sound interesting.

Not that there was anything dull about this particular tale.

CATS, welcome to the board! In here we're all a little bit silly, a little bit gossipy, a whole lot of novela crazy and pretty regular people IRL. I do hope you stick around, we're always glad to take in new souls :)

KIRBY, being kidnapped in broad daylight on a busy highway might be just another regular day in Mexico City for these people. For now, this is the only thing that made me go "huh?", but maybe there is an explanation down the line?
Suzana, teh aging hippy - hahaha, you nailed the description! LOVE it!
That sudden liplock, although very novela like, made me feel uncomfortable for Julia, the less than 12 hours dead fiancée - I'm sure I'll get over it soon.

DIANA, I totally agree that Angelique has a way to light up the screen with all her romantic partners. I've seen her in almost all her novelas and in recent years she has been exceptionally good.

JUDY, I agree this looks rather dark, must be a production choice, giving more gravity to the stories.

RGV, I've already seen Andres Palacios in two other novelas, but he was just blah in those, in Imperio he's rather yummy with his tormented fiancé soon to be tormented lover look. I'm keeping an eye on Julia's sister, too, she seemed very suspicious.

TF, I don't think they will allow Leo to investigate in an official capacity, which will give him even more time to do his detective work on the down low, with Elisa as his partner in crime - just speculating, but after the way she kissed him out of the blue, he'd have to be a really bad cop not to realize something is up and find her intriguing .

JARDINERA, they did make it rather obvious which sister had which role in the family, didn't they? Renata is the loca, Elisa is the princess and Majo, from the brief chat with dad about wanting a great surprise for her birthday, too and his dismisal of her feelings, seems to be the poor, forgotten one. May I just say that Augusto doesn't seem like the greatest of dads? I hate favoritism, even when it's the fake kind.

NINA, I definitely do not trust Eugenio, Augusto's best friend. The way he promised to buy the company (!!!) and solve all the Cantu business problems is a huge alarm signal. To soon for Elisa to realize this, but she might be throwing the family fortune to the wolves.

The thoughts I was left with after this first episode:

Why would Julia take off her ring to go out? Why would she sneak out in the first place and what is her sister hidding about it?

Victoria is played by Leticia Calderon, so no way she'll be playing just the dotting mother and hurt wife! Ditto for Alejandro Camacho! Sorry, show, but we've been watching too many novelas to be fooled.

Will Elisa manage to keep her sister's kidnapping hidden for long? I mean, in the era of video chats and tik tok and this and that?

Muchas gracias, Urban. I won't be able to catch up until late this evening, but I am so looking forward to your recap. Last night's premiere moved quickly and what a great cast!

wowee wow wow... What a crowd forming on the patio. We may have to set up extra tables . And...Kirby and Nina. Yikes . Get the family sized bag of Doritos at Costco. This show, these recappers, and this patio is just what I need right now . GRim reality has been relentless. Bring on the distraction of some fictional evil .

The actor playing Leo does not impress me. CEst la vie. As to Elisa commandeering Leo as her beau, that is how my friend's son met his first wife. Someone was hitting on her at a bar , and she walked over to Scott ( a stranger) and told her admirer that he was her boyfriend .

Elisa looked confused and scared. She didn't appear to have a clue about whatever her dad was involved in . Trying to find a connection between sweet, young Julia and August o has me baffled .

Kirby I been workin hard and tryin
To stay away from large crowds of
Contaminated people. Other than that everythings normal. Lol:-)

Nina... :-) :-) :-) Staying away from large crowds of people. Yep, a happy way of life. Been doing it for years.

Susanlynn Yaaaa the good times are back. Twenty minutes into episode one and Steve has two entries already. Better order a full case of body bags Rosa...er whoever you are in this TN.

I'm a big fan of the original, KPA. Just watched the premier and this version is off to a good start. I won't say more. FYI: Urban, great recap BTW, mentioned KPA was 54 episodes but each of those episodes averaged 2 hours!

Happy viewing!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I'm a Caray veteran, just using a different name. I helped recap the recent "Te Doy La Vida" with Urban. (I'm Elvira who also helped recap Teresa and "La que no podia amar" and a few others.)

I am intrigued by this novela but I don't think I'll watch it daily. I'm not in the mood for a dark novela that may or may not have a happy ending. And the galan isn't doing it for me. (He's very handsome and everything, so I don't know what it is, but meh.) I love the patio so I'll probably watch an episode now and then and follow the recaps. I do want to know the answer the the mysteries.

It's nice to see Susana Gonzales and agree, her hairstyle with those horrible bangs do her no favors.
