Hija

I'll do a recap for tonight. It may be shorter than usual.

Hija #5 part 1

Oyku reads the letter and puts it back in the glove box. Demir closes the hood and he’s ready to go. Oyku doesn’t get in the car. She closes the door and walks away. Demir is annoyed. Where are you going? Come back! He lets her go thinking she will come back at some point, talking to himself, you’re a brat but you will come back. Cemal is peeking from a distance and follows Oyku.

Oyku wanders aimlessly. She doesn’t go to school. All the crappy things Demir has said echo in her head: I can’t help you, you’re better off leaving. I hate kids, they’re monsters that don’t stop crying. Get out of my life; I’m not your father. She ends up in the park on a swing next to a boy, Kan, who is there with his nanny. His mother works a lot. Oyku has never seen her mom. She died when she was a baby. Cemal is watching from afar.

Demir starts to get worried Oyku hasn’t returned. He thinks she must have gone to school. He talks to the teacher. The teacher tells him she wanted to meet him. He gives a lame excuse of being busy at work. The teacher wants to know why Oyku did not come today. Another lame excuse, uh, we went shopping for new clothes and school supplies. That’s why he’s there, to let her know. She understands, but I think she’s a bit suspicious. It’s obvious to her he’s never taken care of a child before. She asks him if he’s capable of taking care of Oyku. Of course he can. Demir is increasingly worried.

Oyku is building sandcastles with Kan at the park. He has to go, but she’s staying for a while. Cemal still watching.

Demir is driving around. Where are you brat, it’s getting dark. Demir realizes that Oyku must have gone to Candan.

Candan is cleaning the floor in the living room and she finds a folder under the couch. It’s from Ugur’s briefcase. It’s the info that Jilet gave them about the paintings and a picture with notes about Candan.

Oyku is walking. (This kid can really cover ground on foot.) She shows up at Candan’s door but doesn’t ring the bell. She thinks of Demir saying that Candan is not your mom; she’s not related to you. Oyku takes a seat on the front steps. Poor kid, she looks so sad.

Meanwhile Candan is still looking at the papers Ugur left behind. She doesn’t know what to think.

It’s getting dark and Oyku is fast asleep on Candan’s steps when Demir pulls up. He’s relieved he found her and approaches her slowly. He stares at her for a while. As he reaches out to move her hair from her face, his phone rings. It Ugur. Demir can’t talk, he’s busy. Ugur has called him about Jilet. They will talk tomorrow. This wakes Oyku. Demir’s back is turned so he doesn’t see Oyku get up and leave right away. He calls after her, and she takes off running. He chases her but is stopped by a body block from Cemal. Is that your daughter? What a shame. Cemal gives a reminder that he would be a thorn in the side of Demir and his loved ones, too. Demir takes off again after Oyku. Cemal stares at them running off.

Demir calls after Oyku, why did you run? She freezes for a moment and then she dashes onto the main road, right into the path of a vehicle. Demir grabs her just in time to protect her and he gets slammed. They fall to the ground together.

Hija #5 part 2

They are wheeled into emergency. He’s unconscious and she’s stable. Later, Oyku shows up in Demir’s room. He looks like he’s pretty banged up. When she sees him, she says, what did they do to you? She climbs onto his bed. She calls softly, Demir? And she starts crying. She touches him gently. This wakes him. He says, why are you crying? You think I’m dying? She asks, you’re not going to die, right? Of course, I will die. She starts crying again. No wait, he’s not dying yet. He says, maybe in about 50 years when she’s a 60 year old witch.

They start to bicker. This is your fault, he says. Well you followed me, you saved me. You shouldn’t have saved me. He tells her to go back to her room. The nurse comes in to check on Demir and tells Oyku to go back to her room. When she leaves the room, Demir asks the nurse how Oyku is doing. Oh, she’s fine, just needs to be here for observation. The nurse walks Oyku back and tells her don’t worry about your dad. He will be fine; he has a concussion and just needs to rest.

Candan shows up to Demir’s room. How are you? How’s Oyku? She’s fine. Candan says she spoke to the doctor; he said you have a concussion. He asks Candan how she found out? She tried calling him a few times and then the hospital answered. Why did she call him? She wanted to talk about something. Flashback to Candan finding the folder. She will wait until he’s better to talk.

Candan goes to Oyku. She is happy to see her. Candan was so scared. What happened? She tried to cross the street. There was a bus and my dad ran and jumped in front and saved me. Candan tells her she should sleep. It’s hard for Oyku to sleep, the hospital smells strange. Candan says hospitals are like that. She asks Candan to stay with her. Of course she will. Candan assures Oyku that everything will be better tomorrow.

Next morning Candan is there when Oyku wakes. She is feeling better. The doctors come in. They go over her chart. Nothing serious. They are waiting for the results of a tomography. (Oyku seems relieved they didn’t mention her condition.) Candan wants Oyku and Demir to come home with her after they are released. Oyku wants to stay with Candan but she thinks her dad won’t. Not to worry, Candan will convince him.

Candan goes to Demir. He’s feeling better. She wants him and Oyku to come back to her house to recuperate. No, no, they have bothered her enough. She says it’s not a bother. Demir brings up Murat. Candan apologizes for Murat. It’s my house, not Murat’s. She will come pick them up tomorrow. All of a sudden he stops arguing and accepts Candan’s offer.

Ugur shows up to see Demir. He brought his mom’s dolmas for him and Demir starts to chow down. He tells Ugur that he’s leaving the city tonight. He’s going to leave Oyku with Candan. The kid will be well cared for and she’ll forget about me quickly. Ugur is upset. What about Jilet? What about Cemal? They’re going to kill us! He begs Demir, please go back to that woman’s house; get those paintings! Demir won’t do it. Ugur asks, why, because you love this woman? This annoys Demir. He tells Ugur to figure it out. Ugur gets mad, takes the food and tells Demir to go to hell before storming out.

Its nighttime and Demir is sneaking out of the hospital. He’s at the elevator when Oyku shows up. She asks, what are you doing? He asks, why are you here? Oyku wants to know where he’s going. He keeps answering her questions with a question, why are you awake? Oyku wants her answer first. Demir isn’t going anywhere. He’s just getting some fresh air. Oyku reminds him he needs to rest and put on the collar.

dondi356

Hija #5 part 3

Oyku gets teary and says to Demir, you are running so they don’t catch you. Don’t worry, I won’t tell the police. Come with me. She starts to walk away, and he follows her to the stairwell. She tells him to use the stairs so they won’t see him. He repeats he was only getting air, not escaping. She repeats she won’t tell anyone. Don’t you trust me she says? Demir looks sooo guilty.

Demir asks Oyku, what would you do if I left? First, I’d stay with Candan and then go to the orphanage. When you were unconscious, I prayed to God if you woke up, I’d go to the orphanage. So now you can go. I’m going to the orphanage; isn’t that what you wanted? Demir opens the door. Oyku asks him where he is going? Demir answers, I’m going beck to my room. She’s relieved. As they walk down the hall, they do the usual bickering. He tells her to go back to bed or she won’t grow. She says it’s in her genes to be short like him.

The doctor is looking at Oyku’s tomography results. He sees something her doesn’t like. She has an enlarged liver and an enlarged spleen. He wants a biopsy done. The doc thinks it could be a post traumatic response, or perhaps…. Uh, oh.

Ugur is at Jilet’s Jilet is steamed that he’s doesn’t have the paintings yet. He warns Ugur not to screw him over. Where are my paintings!

The nurse comes in to see Oyku and tells her to get ready for a biopsy. Oyku flashes back to her diagnosis. The nurse tells her not to worry. (She doesn’t know that Oyku is worried about being outed.) The nurse says she will be back in 5 minutes. Oyku gets dressed quickly and leaves the hospital.

And we are out.

Warning: I had no captions tonight, beware of errors.

Thanks very much, dondi356, for this excellent recap. I'm in awe of your being able to do it without having captions.

It's clear that Demir is beginning to feel something for Oyku, and I think the actor is doing a good job of suggesting this subtly. And his risking his life to save Oyku means a lot to her. It's one of the few indications she has that he really does care for her.

When the nurse told Oyku she would have a biopsy, Oyku remembers overhearing an earlier doctor tell her aunt about what an earlier biopsy revealed, and one of the doctors (I think the earlier one) actually mentions the specific illness she has, Niemann-Pick disease. I then looked it up. Infants who have it don't survive past early childhood. If it's discovered when someone is a child (not an infant), the child often is able to live to adulthood, but with lung impairment and other medical problems. The source I read said that Niemann-Pick is a rare disease and is sometimes confused with other diseases. I'm not sure where the telenovela is going with this.

"ENEMIGO 2":

Dondi356: They're in Ultimos Capitulos.

Hija

Thanks, Juanita. I’m lucky that this is a dubbed show with Spanish that’s easier to understand. I guessed on a couple of things, like the boy’s name, Kan or maybe Kaan, because hard “C” in Turkish is always spelled with a “K”.

Anyway, Demir is definitely coming around on Oyku. The actors have good chemistry.

Good catch about Niemann-Pick. I didn’t hear that. That’s a devastating diagnosis. Ufff, this is gonna be a real tearjerker. I’m still holding out for a misdiagnosis and a happy ending.

dondi356

hija

dondi356, I agree that the dubbed Spanish is easier to understand. Indeed, I think the main reason I decided to jump in and watch Cennet after 100 días ended is that I had tended to catch the last minute or so of each Cennet episode while waiting for 100 días, and I LOVED being able to understand so much more of the Spanish than I could with 100 días. And I'm enjoying the same thing with Todo por mi hija. However, I doubt that I'd be able to recap an episode without the captions. If/when that ever happens, I'll be thrilled.

hija

Speaking of recaps, I'll do something for tonight's episode.

hija

Terrific recap, dondi!

One thing that I wondered about after thinking about it some more. I suppose Viewerville is meant to think that Candan finding that folder would out Demir and Ugur. But the reason they came to her house was to appraise the paintings and make an offer. It wouldn't be that strange that they'd have such a folder with printouts of the paintings and some information about the owner.

Last night I felt the first twinges of an aversion to schmaltz. I get it, I get it, the kid has had a rough row to hoe. But my heartstrings can only be pulled so much and then they tighten right up.

Candan's behavior represents classic telenovela tropes. We've seen this before. A protagonist meets a character who instantly befriends them, feeds them, gives them indigenous medicine to save their lives, etc., etc.

I really did expect Cemal to grab up Oyku and the plot would go forward with Demir getting her back.

Juanita, thanks for the information on Oyku's likely disease. I read a spoiler about a different disease, quite by accident. So now I have no idea. I was upset to have stumbled upon that synopsis when doing my recap of the first episode. Obviously I did not mention it and still have not done so. Whatever disease she has, I'm sure there'll be a miracle cure.

They can drop Ugur's character from the show anytime IMHO.

HIJA

Dondi, excellent recap!

Juanita, I too looked up that disease, but found more grim prognosis for children. I'll go with what you found :-) I also looked into the other conditions that the doctor found; seems Oyku has an enlarged spleen and liver...which could be a consequence of the Niemann-Pick disease. Dondi, crossing my fingers for a misdiagnosis.

Novelera, I too thought Cemal was going to grab Oyku. Maybe he's waiting on Demir to get him that money he demanded before he does anything else??

Hija

Thanks, novelera and Rgv Chick for your appreciation and your comments.

Novelera, I wondered what Candan was going to ask Demir. Would it be about the folder or maybe about how he got mixed up with Ugur? And I agree it wouldn’t be unusual for an appraiser to have this information.

About the “aversion to schmaltz”, it can get tiresome after a while and loses it’s intended effect. I have a limit to watching characters go through extreme, unrelenting tragedy and then I kinda half watch until we get to that turning point.

Maybe Cemal is not as evil as we expect him to be? He’s very bitter about being the only one of the gang to spend time in prison. If he was a “brother” to Demir and Ugur, he was likely a bumbling scammer like them and not violent or a kidnapper. But then again, prison time could change someone.

Juanita, thanks for taking on the recapping for tonight.

TELEMUNDO...

"Falsa identidad 2", finished recording in Mexico last weekend.

Todo por mi hija - #6 - p. 1 de 3

Candan comes to see Oyku at the hospital. She's not in her room. She's not in the bathroom. She's not with her father. Demir tells Candan that no one can find her but him. He and Candan leave to look for her. They drive, yelling "Oyku, Oyku." Amazingly, that doesn't work. Demir is afraid "they'll think I abandoned her." Candan is puzzled--why would he say that? He tries to rephrase what he has said.

Ugur is meeting with Jilet. He tells Jilet that Demir is in the hospital. Jilet couldn't care less. He tells Ugur, "Bring me the paintings or dig your own tomb." Ugur leaves, calls Demir.

Candan and Demir continue their search. Candan says the logical thing would be for Oyku to return home, but she doesn't have a home. That gives Demir an idea: "I know where she is." They go to his tent, and sure enough, Oyku is sitting there. When she sees him, she immediately tells him nothing is wrong with her, and she pleads with him not to take her back to the hospital. Candan suggests that the two of them come back with her and stay at her house. Oyku immediately agrees, but Demir refuses. Oyku says she won't go unless Demir goes, too. Demir gives in.

Demir wants Oyku to study in her room, perhaps so he can think about how to steal the paintings that are in the living room where she is. She insists on studying there. She needs to memorize the lesson, and she succeeds in doing so.

Candan tells Demir, "I'm jealous of you. Oyku is an amazing girl." Demir says that he doesn't think he's a good father. Candan replies, "Is that why you jumped in front of the bus to save her?" Candan then confesses that she had doubts about Demir at the start. She tells him about the folder she found under the couch with information about the paintings and about her. "But when I saw you with Oyku, I knew you couldn't be a bad man. She and Demir see that Oyku has fallen asleep over her books in the living room. Demir carries her up to her room (in spite of his neck brace). Ugur calls. Demir hangs up without speaking. Ugur is angry. "He hung up on me again!" he exclaims. His mother wants to know what's wrong.

The next morning, Candan offers to take Oyku to school. She tells Demir to help himself to whatever he wants. In the fridge. As soon as Candan and Oyku leave, Demir reaches for one of the paintings. But then he remembers what Candan had said: "When I see you with Oyku, I know you aren't a bad person. You have a good heart." He leaves the painting where it is.

In the car, Oyku is reciting her lesson. Candan is impressed. Oyku tells her that the teacher said she could be a model student if she got good grades and behaved herself. "I get good grades, but...." Candan replies, "People always overvalue good behavior." Oyku agrees. She then tells Candan that she got an award last semester. "My aunt was going to frame it, but...I guess she forgot." Candan tells her, "If you get an award this semester, we'll frame it together." Delighted, Oyku asks, "you're going to help me?" "Of course." Candan then asks Oyku whether she was living with her aunt. Oyku thinks for a moment and then replies, "We were living in a house. She would visit from time to time, but then she left."

The scene shifts to some kind of medical conference. They're talking about what sounds like Niemann-Pick, the disease the earlier doctor told the aunt that Oyku has.

Todo por mi hija - #6 - p. 2 de 3

What's said at the conference is a little misleading in terms of the telenovela, I think. The speaker says that most children die before age four. According to what I read, there are several types of Niemann-Pick. One, always discovered in infancy, results in children dying when they're very young. But this is apparently not the kind that Oyku has (if she has it at all). When the disease is discovered in children, most survive into adulthood, but often with medical problems. At any rate, we then see one doctor tell another that they couldn't do the biopsy on Oyku--she escaped.

In school, the teacher announces to the class that Oyku has had an accident. Oyku then explains, "I just didn't look where I was going. My father jumped in to save me." The nice boy who sits next to Oyku confesses that he has great difficulty memorizing. She advises him to look at her when he has to recite. He asks whether she's sugggesting he cheat. No, she says, she'll just smile at him to relax him.

Murat calls Candan. She agrees to meet with him at a cafe. He asks whether she's still angry at him. She tells him he acted very rudely. He replies that he was just worried about her: "You know you're very important to me," he says, putting his hand over hers. She removes her hand. He talks about the sale of her house. He claims he has a friend who is interested in historic houses. She remains coolly polite. She says she has to leave. As soon as she's gone, he calls someone. "I want you to investigate someone. Demir Goctúrk. An art expert."

Alone in Candan's house, Demir was about to drink orange juice out of the bottle. He thinks better of it, pours some into a glass, and drinks from the glass.

At school, Oyku is called upon to recite. She gets to the part "I wash my face with soup and water, and then..." She can't remember. She recalls the doctor telling her aunt that she'll have trouble eating and remembering even basic things. She keeps trying to recall the lesson, but she can't.

Camdan has come to see the horse, whose name apparently is Shimshek. The owner is upset and fed up with the horse. Shimshek is hurting himself and upsetting the other horses. He claims he'll have to sell him. Candan says she'll give the horse a tranquilizer, then treat his wound, and analyze his blood to make sure nothing else is wrong.

Demir is still alone at Candan's. I saw him replacing an electric socket, and I immediately assumed he was putting in some kind of device to help him steal the paintings. But then I saw him screw in a new bulb in a light fixure, and straighten up the pillows on the couch, make the bed, etc. It finally dawned on me that he was simply being helpful, not evil. At one point, he sees a handwritten chart on the wall, with a red heart at the top number. My guess is that it may be an old growth chart for Candan's sister.

As he's doing all this, Ugur arrives and sees Demir with a vacuum cleaner. Ugur is mystified and annoyed. "Why are you acting this way? Do you need the Queen of England to come help you take down the paintings?" He tells Demir that he's tired of waiting, and that if they don't take the paintings soon, Jilet will kill them both. He presents Demir with a plan: they should swap the paintings, replacing them with fakes. "We'll give the paintings to Jilet, and he'll give us our money. What do you think?" Demir doesn't agree. They argue briefly, but then Demir hears Candan's car drive up. He tells Ugur to hide. Now! In desperation, Ugur hides behind the sofa. Candan enters, and her dog Yeye immediately goes sniffing around.

Todo por mi hija - #6 - p. 3 de 3

Demir convinces Candan that the two of them should go pick up Oyku and take her for some ice cream. As soon as they leave, Ugur starts to take one of the paintings. He's interrupted by a text message from Demir: "Don't touch anything. Get out of the house at once."

At school, another girl (blonde, of course) makes fun of Oyku for her stumbling recitation in front of the class. "Don't you have towels in your house? Is that why you have trouble washing your face?" The girl goes on to observe to some other students, "She must have been dropped on her head. Pobre"

Candan and Demir pick Oyku up from school. "How was school?" Oyku replies with a subdued "Good." Demir asks,"Are you OK? Do you feel bad?" Oyku replies, "I'm not sick." When told that they're going for ice cream, Oyku doesn't even smile. Demir and Candan look at each other, puzzled. Candan observes, "You don't seem very happy. How did you do on your oral exam?" Aha! She figured it out. She tells Oyku that she'd like her to come to the farm with her, she has a calf she'd like Oyku to see, and she could pet the calf. That seems to cheer her a bit. Oyku then asks how babies are made. "How did I come into the world? Or how did a calf come into the world?" Candan says she thinks Oyku should ask her father. Demir hesitates, and then says, "When a man and a woman...go out...then they hold hands...you'll find out when you're older, dear."

Suddenly, we see that Cemel is seated in the ice cream parlor. He's staring at Demir and the others. Demir catches sight of him and tells Candan and Oyku that they should leave. Cemel stands by the door and puts his hand lightly on Oyku's head as she passes by him.

Demir tells Candan he has some work to do and he'll join them later. He goes with Cemel. Cemel says bitterly that Demir was living the good life while Cemel was in prison. He has a family. What's your girl friend's name? Demir tells him it's none of his business. Cemel asks, "Are you afraid she'll replace you with me? This is a great opportunity for you. She's beautiful and very rich." Demir angrily grabs him and again asks what he wants. Cemel insists that he wants the money he claims Demir owes him. Demir again tells him he has no money. Cemel doesn't believe him. "Your girl friend lives in an expensive house, and she owns paintings and other stuff." Demir asks in a defiant way what Cemel will do if he doesn't pay. Cemel tells him he'll pay with his life.

The two doctors meet again. The more senior doctor tells the other it's urgent to find the father. His younger colleague replies that they've tried, but the phone number was out of service. And the address he gave turned out to be false. Perhaps we should call the police. The more senior doctor agrees and tells the other one, "Our country doesn't often get cases like this. It's a great opportunity for the hospital and for me. We have to find the father. Keep looking."

Oyku is sitting on her bed. She takes a crayon out of her case, but then it drops. Oyku stares at the hand that dropped the crayon. Is the hand shaking? She keeps staring at the hand as the episode ends.

Fantastic recap, Juanita!

Ugur's plan made no sense to me. The evil intermediary wants the paintings NOW. How is a forger supposed to create 3 fakes fast enough to even do this swap before Ugur and Demir get shot or beaten up by his large thug? As I said before, I'm over Ugur.

That little blonde girl is a sadistic brat.

Oyku's symptoms are likely going to be hard to hide going forward.

Well, that doctor in the suit appears to be a jackass. He wants a career boost from Oyku's illness. Sounds like she'd be basically kept captive for his research.

Hija

Great recap, Juanita. Thanks! I found it very helpful. I’m especially glad you mentioned the marks on the wall. I forgot for a moment that Candan had a little sister.

Şimşek means lightning.

I agree 100% with novelera and I'll add I still don't trust Murat.

dondi356

hija

Thanks very much, novelera and dondi356, for your appreciative and insightful comments. I think we're all in agreement about not trusting Murat.

You're right, novelera. Ugur's so-called plan makes no sense. I keep remembering, though, that Ugur helped Oyku when she was first trying to find Demir, and at times Ugur reminded Demir of his responsibilities toward Oyku. For that reason, I'm not as down on Ugur as I am on Murat, about whom I know less but distrust more. As for the doctor in the suit, I agree with you completely.

dondi356, I'm not at all sure that the wall chart is indeed an old growth chart, but I can't think of what else it could be. I think it was the heart that made me think about it being connected to Candan's sister. Also, thanks very much for the translation of Shimshek. I think I remember your saying that you're not Turkish, but do you know the language?

hija

I'll put up a recap. Fair warning, I just don't seem capable of long ones!

Parte 1 de 2

Candan comes in to say goodnight to Oyku right after she experienced the trembling of her hands. She holds one steady with the other so Candan cannot see. After Candan leaves, she cries a while then begins to recite the Istanbul subway stops, her memory trick.

Jilet shows up at Ugur’s house and his innocent mother believes he’s Ugur’s friend. Jilet issues a veiled threat that Ugur can understand but not Ugur’s mother. When they go outside, Jilet wonders what I wonder, how such a sweet woman ended up with a scumbag son.

Ugur calls Demir, panicked about the threat to his mother and is overjoyed when Demir agrees to proceed with the fake painting plan.

While only Demir is at home, he tries to do a good deed and fixes a bicycle he found, thinking maybe Oyku could use it. Candan gets very upset. [Come on! The damaged bicycle that the child was on 15 or 20 years ago is still around the house?]

We see Candan trying to figure out what’s wrong with the high spirited horse. The owner is out of patience and says he’s getting rid of the horse. When Candan takes hold of the bridle, the horse takes off and drags her a while.

The art forger already has one of the paintings ready. [Really?] They promise the guy they’ll pay him when they get their money and take the fake. Outside the “studio” Ugur is over the moon, saying Bari can do two more to replace the other paintings. [How I loathe Ugur!]

We see Demir bring the fake in. [What? The forger managed to come up with the exact same frame?] He stares at the original for a while and then takes it down.

Oyku is too humiliated to go to school after forgetting the lesson the day before. She’s hanging out on a bench by the water when Cemal approaches. Says he’s a friend of Demir. She instinctively mistrusts him. He wants her to give Demir a message. “I will take from you everything you owe me., what I lost, everything you have.”

Demir puts a painting in his car.

Oyku comes home. Demir accuses her of bunking off school when the doorbell rings. Candan has been helped to the door by one of the workers at the stable. She limps in and Demir and Oyku help her to a couch. She says she thinks she damaged some tejido which my dictionary tells me is soft tissue.’’

Oyku is cooking while Demir chops onions, weeping profusely. Oyku has him hold matches in his mouth and this apparently works. She’s made some delicious soup for Candan.

Oyku practices her times tables in her room.

Parte 2 de 2

Before Candan gets a chance to eat the breakfast Oyku and Demir have prepared, Murat shows up. He rushes over to take her weight from Demir and insults Demir for having let this happen! Murat insists on taking Candan to the hospital. After they leave, Oyku looks at Demir and tells him: “This guy is in love with her, right?” Demir agrees, and then they both agree they don’t like him. Murat’s reason for coming was something about the expert on historical houses, but why isn’t that guy with him?

This time Oyku goes to school and aces her times tables.

Demir gives a painting to Ugur. He keeps blathering on about how they’d have died if Demir hadn’t come through. But Ugur was the jackass who came up with the hare brained scheme to pass themselves off as art experts.

Driving off in the car Demir calls one Mehmet to confirm he has a job in Ankara and he’ll arrive there that night.

At the hospital we find that Candan was right. Nothing is broken. Murat insists on taking her home, even though she says she can take a cab. I think she wants shut of him.

But a nurse comes in saying one Hisan wants to speak to him urgently. We find out the reason. A couple of years ago Murat had treated a patient with Niemann-Pick disease and the press followed the case closely. (Aha! the press!) Hisan wants Murat’s files on the case. When Murat asks him why he’s interested, Hisan lies, saying he attended a seminar about it, not that he has a potential case that will get him attention.

Grinning from ear to ear Ugur brings the painting to Jilet. Ugur admits that a fake was created and put in the place of the original, so the owner won’t be calling the police. One Ali is called in, examines the painting, and declares it a fake. Ugur gets a beating. Sadly, they didn’t kill him off.

Ugur shows up at Candan’s house with a van. He punches Demir and runs inside the house to get the real painting.

While Ugur is trying to get the real painting inside the van, we see Murat drive up. He’s telling Candan he hopes she won’t be upset with him, but he had Demir investigated. They both see Ugur and Demir struggling over a painting.

HIJA

Thank you, Juanita and Novelera! There are days when I get too busy to comment, but I do try to read the recaps and comments.

Novelera, "Well, that doctor in the suit appears to be a jackass. He wants a career boost from Oyku's illness. Sounds like she'd be basically kept captive for his research." It amazes me how so many of us think along the same lines! DITTO on that comment.

Can we get a bit cat to chase off MuRAT?? I agree that he is NOT trustworthy. He's probably after Candan for her money.

I was so glad that Okyu remembered her times tables. That smile of relief was priceless.

I'm wondering if Demir actually gave the wrong painting to Ugur OR are the paintings in Candan's house fake too?

Many thanks, novelera, for this excellent recap. When you offered to do a recap of tonight's episode, you sounded somewhat apologetic that you "don't seem capable of long ones." What?? I wouldn't call this recap "short," just "concise," and, as I guess I've said before, I'm in awe of your ability to be concise and complete at the same time.

I wasn't surprised that Candan was upset at Demir's having fixed the bicycle. We know she feels very sad and guilt-ridden about Seda's death. In fixing the bike, Demir was unwittingly messing with the past, blurring an event that is immensely important to Candan. As impractical as it seems, I think that's why she has kept the bike and kept it in its broken condition. Her response makes me think I may have guessed right about the wall chart being an old marker of Seda's growth.

OTOH, I too was scratching my head and yelling "HUH??" at the fact that an excellent forged version of the painting already exists, and even has the same ornate frame as the one hanging in Candan's house. I suspect there's more to this than we're currently aware of.

Do matches in the mouth really work to keep the onion cutter from tearing up? If so, I think I'll try to get hold of a large box of matches. I love cooking with onions, but I hate the crying jag I often have when I slice or chop them.

I hope Hisan comes to a bad end. He's a liar as well as a self-centered SOB.

I wonder how Demir and Ugur will handle the exceedingly embarrassing situation they found themselves in when the episode ended. Perhaps Demir will claim that he arrived home to find Ugur replacing the painting? There's also the question of which one (if any) is the real painting.

Rgv Chick, good to see you here! I'm happy to see that you too are wondering about the authenticity of the paintings in Candan's house. Perhaps her father replaced them all and put the real ones in a safe place?

My sense of what happened is that Demir gave Ugur the fake and returned the real painting to the wall in Candan's house. I feel this way because of the strenuous way he was fighting with Ugur, who was trying to get the one he took from the house into the van.

Of course, Rgv Chick may be onto something about the paintings on the wall also being fake. But, to me, Demir has shown recently how his budding feelings for Candan and newly awakened moral convictions coming from being Oyku's father caused him to hope giving the fake to Ugur to take to Jilet would work.

And, chiming in again about our feelings about MuRAT (thanks, Rgv Chick). Demir and Oyku think he's in love with Candan. I doubt that he is. He may be after the paintings himself. I believe Juanita said a while ago how odd it was she hadn't heard a thing from him in years, but the death of her father has caused him to stick to her like a burr. She was beautiful and kind before her father died. Where was he then?

Hija

Thank you, novelera, for your fabulous recap and follow up comments. Great observations by Rgv Chick and Juanita.

I also wondered why was Seda’s bike was kept. I suppose it was waiting for Demir to fix it. Is that some sort of symbolism? IIRC Seda was 8 when she died, and she would have been 18 now.

Regarding Ugur’s fake, the matching frames made me think Candan’s painting might also be fake and that both paintings were done by Bari.

While I find Ugur increasingly annoying, he has been helpful to Demir and Oyku. I am inclined to agree with Juanita on this.

We all agree on MuRAT, Rgv Chick.

I had to Google the match & onion trick. I found mixed answers, so I guess YMMV.

Very disappointed in that doctor, no surprise he’s a friend of MuRAT’s. Did I hear correctly that MuRAT wanted that doc to work at his hospital?

Juanita, I have watched thousands of hours of Turkish language series and movies. I can’t speak it, but I have acquired a Turkish “novela” type of vocabulary.

I will attempt a recap tonight.
