Hija #32 part 1

Asu shows up at Cemal’s door. She breaks down. My father is dead, he’s dead Cemal, he’s dead. He comforts her. She pulls herself together quickly. Asu tells Cemal that Demir knows she only wants Oyku for the money. Her father must have told Oyku during the visit somehow. Then she went to see the old man, but they said he was dead. We’re not getting the money! We will get the money says Cemal. That money is yours. She your daughter. You have rights and we will get the money. Cemal promises that they will get custody and that they will get the money. He also promises that she will be happy from now on. Trust me, Asu, you won’t have to cry anymore. She cries on his shoulder.

Demir and Oyku are walking by the shore. Oyku has something to tell him. I know, she says. What do you know? What? Say it. She goes into her bookbag and gets out her diary. She opens to a page and gives it to Demir. He starts reading to himself as they walk along. We hear Oyku’s voice reading and we see clips to illustrate what she has written:

Dear diary, my father is the best dad in the world. He’s handsome and smart, too. He always makes me laugh. He makes me so happy. My dad is my hero. I love him more than anything. And he loves me a lot too. But…Demir stops walking…my dad’s been lying to me. Dad said we got an inheritance. But I don’t believe it. He probably made it up. It can’t be true. If he had money he wouldn’t have to work. He told me we wouldn’t always be able to live off that money. It was another lie. He said he was a taxista but he’s been doing construction. I heard him tell Candan. He hurt his leg.

He knew Asu was my mother. But he introduced her as a friend. He lied to me. (They are sitting on a bench now.) Plus, he’s hiding something big from me. I know it. I figured it out. He’s giving me meds and saying its vitamins. It’s the meds that the doctor said I have to take. He’s lying to me again. He knows I’m sick, but he is pretending he doesn’t. But I know. I also know that the meds are expensive. And that he needs a lot of money to buy them. Even though I know he’s lying so I won’t feel bad, I don’t want dad to keep lying to me. He’s looking at Oyku while he reads these last few lines. Tearfully, they embrace.

When Demir is finally able to speak he looks into Oyku’s eyes and says, I swear I’ll stop lying to you. (Although I understand why, how many times have they sworn this to each other?) We’re going to fight against everything we have to. He holds his finger up, no more lies. They touch fingers and make the promise. Camera holds that shot for effect.

Demir and Oyku arrive at the hospital. Before they enter Ihsan’s office, Oyku asks nervously, Dad? Demir bends down and says, you don’t need to worry or be afraid because you are not alone. Let’s go inside and listen to the doctor and then we’ll fight against anything that comes our way. Because we are a team--the Iron Man and the Princess. We fear nothing. Oyku agrees and this seems to settle her nerves. It’s a gimme five and they enter the office.

Ihsan greets them, how are you? He’s happy to see them both. They sit. Demir takes out his phone and manages to shoot off a quick text to Ihsan without Oyku noticing. “Please tell her everything is going to be fine.” Ihsan is not pleased to read this.

Hija #32 part 2

Ihsan looks at Demir first and then says he was about to call them. He had some news for them. Oyku, there is a new medication that was just discovered. If you take it regularly, you will be cured. Oyku is thrilled to hear this, is it true? (not true and I can’t believe this unethical behavior and possible malpractice) There were new trials. It’s been approved and we can start immediately. Does this mean I’m going to be okay, asks Oyku?

Ihsan continues, if you take this it could halt the illness in its tracks. (So, since Demir promised not to lie, he makes Ihsan do it for him.) Take the meds and we’ll see how it goes. Demir thanks the doctor and so does Oyku. Ihsan stresses that she must take the meds. Ishan asks to speak with Demir before they leave. It’s just about scheduling visits and the medications. Ihsan asks Oyku to go outside and get juice from Aysun.

Ihsan is not happy with Demir. Demir is sorry; he feels this is too much of a burden for one so little. It’s even heavy for an adult. Ihsan gets it but he reminds Demir that this is inevitable. Demir just wants Oyku to be happy and not worry. He wants her to do homework and watch cartoons and to be in the school play. Ihsan understands but he says we must get used to what’s to come. We must begin treatment.

Oyku is having juice with Aysun. She tells her about the play. Demir leaves the office and sees Oyku at Aysun’s desk. He takes a breath before he calls Oyku. Let’s go. Demir says they should go out and celebrate the good news. Let’s have a pizza night. Oyku wants order in because she likes her house so much. Oyku wants to invite Ugur because he took her for pizza and she wants to return the favor. Cute alert: Demir says he’s gonna eat Oyku instead of the pizza.

Pizza night and they’re chowing down. Demir asks Ugur, how was your date? Ugur plays it down, we had a coffee and we talked about stuff. Change of subject and Ugur wants to know what they are celebrating. Demir and Oyku look at each other. Umm… Why are you making this face, asks Ugur? Oyku thinks fast and says we don’t have to deal with Asu anymore. Ugur is pleasantly surprised.

They polish off 2 pizzas. Ugur will clean up and Oyku will finish her homework. Ugur overhears Oyku ask Demir if she took her meds today. She can’t remember. Demir reminds her she took them when she got home. Demir and Ugur look worried. Oyku goes to do her homework. Demir says this happens to everyone, right? He forgets stuff too. Ugur says, it’s only human, Oyku is allowed to forget. It doesn’t have to be because of the illness. Demir thinks back to Ihsan saying, we have to get used to what will come. She will forget things and have muscle pain. You have to be prepared.

Later, Ugur asks what happened with Asu. What happened with the inheritance? The money is really Oyku’s and Asu wanted her for the money. When Demir confronted her, she didn’t say a word. Ugur thinks this is great, Asu is off their backs and Demir and Oyku can live comfortably with the money. No, Demir says, the money is Oyku’s and besides she won’t get the money until she turns 18. Ugur says who knows what will happen by then.

Ugur realizes what he has said and follows it up with, you know that’s not what I meant. Demir goes to check on Oyku. Ugur goes with him and Demir warns him to keep his mouth shut. Before the guys enter her room, we see that Oyku is in pain. Ugur bids them a good night.

Oyku wants Demir to tell her a story. Oh no, that book you like? No, Oyku tells him to make one up. Oyku has a pain in her knees again. They hurt a lot. Demir tells her they hurt because she’s growing and that happened to him, too. It meant he was getting taller. He massages her legs. And the story?

Hija #32 Part 3

Once up a time many years ago, there lived a king made of iron and his daughter the princess. They were happy and lived in a big palace. Then suddenly a monster came to give them a hard time. It was ugly, really horrible. Father and daughter joined forces and hands and wouldn’t let the ugly monster scare them. Since the king and the princess weren’t scared, the monster’s power grew weaker and he became tiny like a grain of sand. He was placed in the palm of the princess’ hand. Demir and Oyku blow the monster away and Oyku proclaims they lived happily ever after. Of course, they did. Oyku goes to sleep.

Demir is in the kitchen. He remembers when he met Cemal outside of Candan’s clinic and then when he saw Asu outside the building. He makes a call to Candan. He says he just wanted to hear her voice. He also says, he doesn’t want her to stay at the hostel anymore. She let them stay with her when they were at a low point. Now Demir would like to do the same for her. He asks her to come stay at his house. It would make Oyku so happy. He didn’t mention it before because he thought she was leaving. Candan is silent for a second but she’s smiling. She tells Demir, I’m already looking for a house in your neighborhood. Demir thinks that’s great. He will help her look. She’s is waiting for a callback but if that falls through then they can look together. They send each other besos.

Oyku is getting ready to leave for school. They need to stop by Ugur’s on the way. Oyku asks Demir if he can measure her again because her knees hurt again last night. Please measure me. Demir is upset, your knees hurt again? He measures her. We see a couple of very small increases on the door frame. Demir adds another small increase and says it’s a centimeter. See dad, it’s because I drink my milk. Oyku goes to get her watercolors.

A knock at the door. It’s a messenger with a summons for family court. Asu is seeking custody of her daughter. Oyku wants to know what he’s reading. It’s nothing and he stuffs it in his pocket. They set off for the day. Demir is clearly upset. They stop at Ugur’s. Oyku needs to use the bathroom. Ugur asks Demir how is everything? He shows Ugur the summons and asks Ugur to call the lawyer. Demir says, I promised Oyku she’d never have to see Asu again. Let’s ask him what we need to do. Ugur says don’t worry, he will call. Oyku appears and says, who are you calling?

And we are out.

dondi356

Dondi, thank you so much for the detailed recap! Wish I could seen so many of these scenes but your vivid descriptions painted a thorough picture. My eyes teared up when I read your description of Demir reading the diary and the finger touching and embrace afterwards.

Cemal promises that they will get custody and that they will get the money. He also promises that she will be happy from now on. Promises, promises, so many empty promises. I guess it hasn't gotten through Cemal's thick head that everything he has done against Demir has gone sour.

He had some news for them. Oyku, there is a new medication that was just discovered... (not true and I can’t believe this unethical behavior and possible malpractice). What is with this doctor?! First he gives Oyku tests without Demir's permission; and now he makes up some boggus meds that will cure Oyku??? He must be aching to be thrown out of the medical profession. He could have just reassured Oyku that she will be well and left it at that. Then he could have asked Oyku to wait outside. Ughhh!

"They send each other besos." Awwww, blossoming love!

Wow, Cemal wasted no time in obtaining a court date quickly! Only in a TN...

hija

Thanks so much, dondi356, for this superb recap. I think I enjoyed it more than the episode, in part because it has the benefit of your insightful comments. I too was astonished that the doctor would do as Demir asked and lie to Oyku. It's one thing for Demir to create a charming bedtime fairy tale about IronMan and the Princess combining forces to defeat the ugly monster, but quite another for a physician to deliberately lie to a patient.

That was an impressive litany of lies that Oyku recorded in her diary. And I doubt that touching fingers with Demir is going to put an end to them. Indeed, at the very end of the episode, when Demir received the court notice about Asu's seeking custody, Oyku sees the look on his face and asks him what's the matter, and Demir lies again ("nothing").

I still can't decide what Cemal's feelings are about Asu. He seemed tender and concerned when she came to him crying about her father's death, but I still wonder. Indeed, I wouldn't trust either of them further than I could throw them (though I would like to throw them!).

Hija
Thanks, Rgv Chick and Juanita. I’m glad you find my recaps helpful. I try to avoid too many comments during recapping lest my recap turn into a rant.

Here we thought Ihsan was an evil doc but he’s turned out to be somewhat of a softie and an idiot.

A couple of things:

Ugur glossed over his date with Sevgi. Is he still interested? He didn’t tell Demir her father was a police captain.

They mentioned feeding the pizza scraps to the cats. That is a no no. I wouldn’t take the chance there’s something toxic in the ingredients. I’m surprised since the Turkish people (especially in Istanbul) take good care of the street animals, cats and dogs. Notice the shelters and feeding dishes around Demir’s house.

dondi356

hija

dondi356, I love all the info about Turkey and things Turkish that you share with us. I confess that I hadn't noticed the shelters and feeding dishes around Demir's house.

I'll do some sort of recap of tonight's episode.

Todo por mi hija - #33 - p 1 de 3

Demir had just said to Ugur that they need to call the lawyer. Oyku comes out and asks who they are calling? Ugur claims they were talking about the play, but Demir tells her that they were having a private conversation between adults. He asks her whether she tells him everything she says to Mercan.
Ugur leaves and Demir and Oyku go off to school.

The phone in Mufide's house is ringing, but Mufide can't find the phone. Ugur finds it. The neighbor has called Mufide to let her know that the house is empty. Mufide tells Ugur that if the woman he went out with recently doesn't work out, perhaps he can meet the person Mufide met in the grocery store, who may want to rent the empty house. Ugur remembers that Mufide described her as tall, attractive, and refined, and he says he's interested. Oops, Mufide can't remember what she did with the phone number.

When they arrive at the school, Demir makes sure that Oyku knows she must now take two pills after lunch, not just one. She goes off reciting "2 pills after lunch" over and over again. When she gets into the classroom, she writes the instruction on her hand as well.

Mercan asks for help with the math homework. Oyku happily explains the problem (an exceedingly simple one, it seems to me), but Mercan still doesn't understand, and asks her to explain it again. Suddenly, Oyku seems to go into a trance. She stares straight ahead, unresponsive. Mercan keeps saying "Oyku, Oyku, can you hear me?" but gets no reply. This goes on for a while, but finally she blinks her eyes and says "Huh?" Mercan asks her if she's OK. She says she is. He then reminds her that she was going to help him with the math problem. "With what?" she asks.

Candan spots Cemal's car pull up outside her clinic. She goes out to the car and asks to talk with him inside. When she mentions having introduced him to Demir, Cemal at first pretends he doesn't remember, and then, "Oh yes, the guy I met outside." Candan says that Cemal may already know that his friend Asu is the mother of Demir's daughter. Cemal claims he didn't know this. Candan continues, saying that Demir and Asu aren't getting along, Asu is suing for custody, and Candan is afraid things may get worse and Oyku may be hurt. Since Cemal knows Asu, Candan was hoping that perhaps he could convince her to settle things. Indeed,"perhaps you could be a mediator between us." (Yikes!) Cemal hesitates, then says he'd be happy to help if he can, and he suggests Candan have dinner with him that night, that he has some important things to say about this. Candan says she can't do it tonight, but how about tomorrow afternoon? Cemal agrees and leaves. As soon as he is in the car, Cemal calls Asu and tells her he'll pick her up.

At work, Demir's boss watches him work and tells him he seems to be getting the hang of it. Demir then asks him for an advance. The boss agrees, saying he'll take it out of Demir's check. Demir thanks him. The boss leaves, and a workman comes by and tells Demir there's a woman at the entrance asking for him. Sure enough, it's Asu. Demir isn't pleased. He asks "Are you trying to make a scene and get me fired?" Asu replies, "That's a good idea. Perhaps I'll try it next time." Demir asks Asu why she has come. She claims she wanted to be sure he received the court notice. She says, "You know they're going to give me custody, you'd better get used to the idea." Demir asks why she's doing this. "Did you suddenly get your maternal instincts, or is it because you're an unemployed alcoholic?" Asu replies, "You're telling me this when you adopted an 8-year-old to avoid a prison term? Do you really think you're so innocent? We're not all that different."

Todo por mi hija - #33 - p 2 de 3

Demir replies heatedly, "I love Oyku and I'm her father! You want money; I just want Oyku. That's a big difference!" He tells Asu he'd rather die than hand his daughter over to her. She replies, "Watch what you say. You may regret saying that."

Asu leaves and immediately calls Cemal, who is apparently waiting in his car nearby. When she gets in the car,Cemal asks her how Demir reacted. She tells him he just yelled at her. She then asks Cemal, "When will we get the money? You know the trial won't be just one day, and I'm tired." Cemal tells her "It won't be easy as long as the girl doesn't want to be with you. But we'll persist, Demir will get impatient, and that will work in our favor." Asu says that Demir is getting very emotional. Cemal replies, "He'll be even more so soon."

The boss asks Demir what's the matter. Demir first says "nothing," but then explains that his daughter's mother has filed for custody. He then asks the boss whether he can arrive a bit late the next day. The court case is in the morning. The boss agrees, but tells him to stop wasting time and get to work.

The scene shifts to Oyku's classroom. Oyku is lying on something, with other children gathered around her. At first I thought this was related to her earlier trance, but it turns out they're rehearsing "Snow White." Suddenly Ugur arrives, apologizes for being late, says he has practiced the play last night, and starts telling the students how they should be saying their lines. He makes a total ass of himself. Finally Sevgi stops him and asks to speak with him outside. They leave, and she asks what he's doing. She explains that his instructions will make the students forget their lines. He apologizes. She tells him she's not throwing him out [Good grief! Why not??], and she then goes back inside.

Later, Ugur walks Oyku back home. Oyku tells him that the teacher was right. Ugur says, "So I made things worse." "Yes," replies Oyku. When they arrive home, Oyku asks Ugur, "Are you upset with me? I know how much you like plays, but we're just kids." Suddenly there's a knock at the door. Ugur goes to see who's there, but Oyku stops him. Candan is at the door. Ugur is panicked. Candan must not see him. Oyku says the best thing would be to climb out the bedroom window. Ugur does this, hurting his leg a bit in the fall. He limps away. Oyku opens the door and explains to Candan that she was in the bathroom. Candan asks whether Oyku was home alone. "No," replies Oyku, "Ugur was here, but he left about ten minutes before you came."

Oyku tells Candan she has a question: how does it feel to be a mother? Candan wants to know why she's asking this. Oyku says, "I wondered what it feels like having a mother. Now I have one, but I'm not happy." Candan assures her that that's natural, she doesn't know her mother well yet. "I don't want to know her!" insists Oyku. She then asks Candan not to tell Demir she said this. He'd be unhappy. Oyku then claims that it Candan's turn to ask a question. Candan can't think of one, so Oyku asks another: "Candan, are you in love?" Candan says, "Why do you ask?" and then tells Oyku, "I think we should talk about these things when you're older."

Todo por mi hija - #33 - p 3 de 3

Demir and Ugur meet with the lawyer. The lawyer can't tell them much. There will probably be more than one session. Demir tells him, "I promised my daughter no one would take her from me. Can I keep that promise?" The lawyer says that in these cases, mothers have an advantage. Demir (I think) says, "Mother? She's an alcoholic psychopath!" The lawyer points out that when Demir first got Oyku, he wasn't in the best condition. However, Demir has a job and is renting a new house. Those are good things. The lawyer leaves, saying he'll try to find out who the judge will be so they can be more prepared.

Candan is putting Oyku to bed and offers to read to her. Oyku tells her, "I'm going to write a book when I grow up." Candan says nothing at first, but then replies, "Of course, you're very smart." Oyku tells her that the title of her book will be "King Demir". Candan replies, "Great title."

At work, Demir overhears another worker talking on the phone, asking about someone's fever. The worker claims he can't take more time off from work. When he gets off the phone, Demir asks about it, and the worker tells him his son has a fever of 40 degrees (104 Farenheit). Demir tells him he should go to his son, and Demir offers to do the other worker's work in addition to his own. The guy first refuses, but then accepts. Demir gives him some money, in case there are expenses at the hospital or for medicine.

A very tired Demir arrives at home very late. Candan tells him she was somewhat worried. He gratefully accepts her offer to make coffee. They talk about the court case. Candan says, "Logically, Asu doesn't stand a chance." Demir tells her," the lawyer pointed out that neither of us raised Oyku. And when I got Oyku my circumstances weren't much different from Asu's." Candan tries to assure Demir that all will be OK. "I really believe that," she says. Demir says, "I promised Oyku I'd never give her up." Candan replies, "You and Oyku will always be together." Candan then says it's late and she should leave. Demir asks her to stay. She says she has to leave, but she'll be back. She moves toward the door, then turns back to hug Demir.

Demir goes into Oyku's room. A semi-asleep Oyku asks, "Papa, are you back?" "Yes, go back to sleep." But Oyku has one more thing to say: "Candan is in love with you." And the episode ends.

HIJA

Juanita, excellent recap, your detail is impeccable, thank you!

I suppose Ugur finding out who Sevgi's dad is kinda nixed that relationship, huh? What a relief that Mufide can't remember where she left Candan's number.

Those little episodes Oyku is having are so disturbing. I just can't fathom the thought that she might die at the end. If I'm feeling this way and it's just a TN, I can't even start to imagine what parents must go through.

It really took me by surprise that Candan still hasn't at least suspected that Cemal is in cahoots with Asu. I hated that she was confiding in him and asking for his help. He must have laughed at her as he walked away.

I didn't understand why Asu felt the need to go by Demir's worksite and pester him. Was it just to get him in trouble and turn the knife while she was there? I'm still wondering if there is a hint of guilt in Asu. There are instances when sh elooks off into the distance that makes me think that she might be salvageable.

Candan surprising Ugur and Oyku was funny. After he jumped out of the window I was expecting to meow like a cat...with as much noise as he made!

Demir giving some of his advance and assuring the worker that he would do his part of the job was more than admirable. Looks like out bumbling swindler is becoming quite the galan.

"Candan then says it's late and she should leave. Demir asks her to stay" Oh how I was hoping she'd stay, but I guess it is a bit too soon.

"Oyku has one more thing to say: "Candan is in love with you." Oyku is such a perceptive little girl! I do hope that her fantasy wedding comes true.

Hija

Thanks so much, Juanita. Great recap.

Mercan is not very good at Math, just like Demir. I hope Mercan tells someone about Oyku’s trance. Looks like an absence seizure to me.

Just when Candan and Demir are getting closer, we are getting closer to another big reveal: Candan finding out about Ugur, Demir and the art scam.

Yikes is right, Juanita, Candan is seeking Cemal’s intercession. Is he going to out Demir during their dinner?

dondi356

hija

Thanks very much, Rgv Chick and dondi356, for your very interesting and perceptive comments.

Rgv Chick, I'm guessing that either Mufide or Ugur will come upon the paper containing Candan's phone number. And yes, "it's just a TN," but I recall dondi356 saying (while we were watching Cennet) that Turkish novelas sometimes did not have happy endings. I'm strongly hoping this will NOT be one of those times!

dondi356, yes, it looks as if one way or another, another Big Reveal may soon occur. I hadn't thought about Cemal's outing Demir at his next meeting with Candan, though that seems quite possible, especially since he said he had something "important" to tell her. Arrgh. And if it doesn't happen then, it could very well happen if/when Mufide gets in touch with Candan about the house that's available and Ugur comes to help the attractive mystery woman move in. Oops.

Frankly, I'm glad to have two weekdays without Hija (though the debate tonight may make me wish we had Hija instead).

hija

Thanks so much for both the terrific recaps, dondi and Juanita. I am up to date on both episodes but have not had time to comment.

Watching the World Series has used up a lot of my time!

What I gathered from Asu's visit to Demir's job site was that Cemal told her exactly what to say and the purpose was to somehow goad him into making a mistake.

I didn't think the lawyer Ugur got was all that helpful. I can't remember if he is the same guy that Ugur used to get Demir out of jail.

Of course the courts favor mothers as a general rule. I can't remember which character said it or in which episode, but Asu KNEW she had a child and abandoned her. While Demir had no clue about Oyku until Ugur read the letter from Zendep that Oyku gave him. And, despite some initial reluctance, he's done the best he could to care for her.

I was wondering how Asu (Cemal's marionette) knew about Demir's having only agreed to take Oyku to avoid a jail sentence.

That frozen moment in the classroom was awful. I'm just shocked that they have come up with a completely incurable disease for a child that they've then portrayed as so delightful half of Viewerville would move her into their spare room.

Demir must fear Cemal telling Candan about his criminal past or why else doesn't he just tell her what a rat Cemal is? It drives me nuts Cemal keeps pulling the wool over Candan's eyes.

Many have wondered about Cemal's intentions regarding Asu. I believe he loves her. And that love comes with a good bit of getting even for when she appears to have chosen Demir over him in the past. And, of course, it doesn't exactly bother him that, by taking Demir's child away, he gets revenge for what happened in the robbery 8 years ago. And...if he gets his hands on the money...well it checks off all the boxes.
