Sorry I’m so late with this. Thanks, everyone. Interesting to read your comments and observations. Thanks, Juanita, for editing my post.
The nightmare scene had me fooled for a bit, too. But I was worried that Demir would find Oyku passed out on the floor. Not until they focused on the empty table, did I begin to think something was weird. The role reversal was a nice touch to end the scene.
I wasn’t looking at the Asu story Demir told Oyku as a flat out lie but as a kind of need to know basis. How much should one tell an 8 year old about a messy adult relationship? He came clean about the important stuff—Asu is her mother, he didn’t know then and just found out now.
novelera, thanks for “sin anesthesia” and your research on abortion in Turkey. I liked Ugur confronting Cemal. He needs to be told he’s a heartless bastard. But I see your point about the head’s up. Didn’t think of it that way.
Juanita, I’m still trying to figure out if Cemal really loves Asu or if he’s just using her.
dondi356
Ugur arrives at the school to pick Oyku up. He encounters Sevgi in the hallway. She tells him that they're still rehearsing, it's early. He tells her he loves the theater, ever since he had a part in grade school. He asks whether he could help her, perhaps be a queen's guard (huh?) or her assistant.
Meanwhile, in the class, Ilayda is trying to torment Oyku as usual. She says she wonders whether the audience will really believe that Oyku is a princess; "you walk more like a frog than a princess." Oyku asks her whether she's saying this because she's jealous. At this point, Sevgi and Ugur enter the classroom. As usual, Ugur can't shut up. He insists on giving advice and making an ass of himself. FF>>
Ugur continues to advise Oyku about how to say her lines as they're walking home from school. When they get to her house, he spots Candan and immediately ducks out of sight. He tells Oyku that he can't let Candan see him. Oyku should go the rest of the way by herself and say she walked home alone. Oyku goes to the house and greets Candan. Candan is surprised to see her by herself. Oyku explains that Ugur brought her back but then had to hurry home. "Oh, the famous Ugur," says Candan.
Demir is struggling at the construction site. Suddenly he falls while carrying a heavy load and hurts his leg. He's clearly in pain but doesn't want to admit it, since he's determined to keep his job. He assures the boss that he's OK. As soon as the boss leaves, Demir takes off his sock and sees that his foot is all red.
Oyku is telling Candan about school. "It's easy for Ilayda to play the evil witch," Oyku says. She then changes the subject: "Candan, I think you should move here." "To the neighborhood?" asks Candan. "Yes," replies Oyku. Candan says she'll think about it, adding "the hostel is very boring." There's a knock at the door. Candan opens it, thinking perhaps Demir has returned early. It's Asu. They stare at each other. Asu asks whether Demir is there. Candan says no, and then says she saw Asu at Cemal's apartment, but she didn't know that Asu also knew Demir. Asu says she has come to take Oyku. Candan asks why Oyku should go with her. "I'm her mother," replies Asu. "Is there a problem?" Oyku tells Candan, "I don't want to go with her." Candan tells Asu, "I can't let you go with Oyku without talking to Demir. No one told me you were coming." Asu reaches for Oyku, but Candan grabs her arm and stops her.
Candan moves away from the door to go call Demir. However, she doesn't close the door, and Asu enters the house. Candan tells Demir that "something weird happened." Demir is immediately worried that something has happened to Oyku, but Candan assures him that Oyku is fine, but that Asu has arrived and wants to take Oyku. Candan isn't sure what to do. Demir tells her he'll be coming home right away. Demir asks his boss for permission to leave to take care of his daughter. The boss agrees.
"Demir working," says Asu in amazement. "Who'd have thought it." Suddenly Oyku blurts out, "Why did you abandon me when I was a baby?" Asu tells her she had no choice. "Then why did you come back?" asks Oyku. "I don't love you," she tells Asu. Asu says she'll answer all Oyku's questions, but when they're alone. Oyku replies, "I don't want to be alone with you." Candan tries to say something, but Asu tells her to be quiet, "You're just the babysitter." Oyku tells Asu not to talk to Candan like that. They go on like this. Asu tells Oyku to watch her language, prompting Candan to say "The person who should watch her language is you."
Demir arrives. Oyku rushes into his arms, pleading "Don't let her take me." Demir tells Oyku to go to her room with Candan, while he talks to Asu. After they've left, Demir turns to Asu and asks, "Why don't you take the money from your father and just go away?" "Not without taking my daughter," replies Asu. "In your dreams," says Demir. Asu claims that she has the right to spend time with Oyku. Demir says she had her chance and blew it. He continues, "We had an agreement. You weren't going to tell Oyku that you are her mother. Do you see what you've done to her? Why ar you doing this? Forget about seeing Oyku." Asu threatens, "the next time, you won't see me, you'll see the police. Let's see if you scream at them." She tells Demir that he has a lot to lose. Demir replies that she can't come and scare Oyku again. Asu asks whether he's the one who's scared. She then tells him, "I'm coming tomorrow. Have her ready. If you don't do what I say, I'll call the police." With that, she leaves.
Demir goes into Oyku's room and finds her lying with her head in Candan's lap. He and Candan leave the sleepy Oyku in her room and go into the liviingroom to talk. Demir tells Candan he doesn't know what to do. "Should I let her see Oyku? The idea of the two of them together terrifies me." He's also afraid that the police will come to take her. Candan advises that he try to be a bit calmer and perhaps let Asu see her. She tells Demir that Cemal knows Asu, and perhaps they might ask for Cemal's help in dealing with this. Demir doesn't encourage this idea. Perhaps it's just a coincidence, or perhaps mention of Cemal has thoroughly shaken him, but he suddenly fesses up and tells Candan that he's not an art expert, he's been working in construction. "No, I don't have any experience, but I can learn. I need the money for Oyku." Oyku was standing by the open door to her room, and it's likely that she heard their entire conversation. She goes over to her desk, takes out her diary. "Dear Diary...."
The next morning, Demir tells Oyku that he spoke to Asu this morning. "The problem is, I can't do much about it. I'd like your opinion, Oyku. Would you let Asu pick you up from school?" Oyku replies, "Don't worry, Papa. I can take care of Oyku. If I have to share time with her, it's OK."
Asu and Cemal are leaving his apartment. She thanks him for helping her. They leave the building without noticing that Ugur is near the building (and not by accident). He asks himself, "Where are they going so early?" They drive off in Cemal's car, and bloodhound Ugur hails a taxi and tells the driver to follow that car. The driver is somewhat suspicious. He's not looking for trouble. What's the address Ugur wants to go to? Ugur is annoyed--just follow that car. The taxi driver accuses him of having bad manners, but he does follow the car.
Cemal and Asu reach their destination. They go into a building. They don't notice that a taxi has stopped very near their car, nor that Ugur got out of the cab. He too goes into the building, just as Asu and Cemal have gotten into an elevator. Ugur rushes up the stairs. He sees a sign announcing Tolga, attorney at law.
Oyku is called on at school to answer a question about the circulation system, and she gives the right answer: the kidneys. (They teach human anatomy to 8-year-olds in Turkey?) When she stands up to answer the question, her backpack falls on the floor. Afterward, she picks up the backpack but fails to notice that the little white envelope with her "vitamins" has fallen out of the backpack.
In the lawyer's office, Asu is reading her father's will. Apparently he is leaving $250,000,000 to her for Oyku! She asks the lawyer for a copy of the will, and he has one made for her. She and Cemal then leave the office. Ugur has been waiting, and as soon as they get into the elevator and go down, he goes into the lawyer's office and tells the receptionist that he'd like to speak with the lawyer, Mr. Tolga, about the people who have just left. She goes into the lawyer's office and tells him there's someone to see him about Asu. Ugur mutters to himself, "I'm going to see what you're up to, Cemal."
The receptionist tells Ugur that the lawyer will see him. Ugur enters the office and says he has questions about Asu. "She appeared out of nowhere and wants to take her daughter, Oyku, whom she hadn't seen in eight years." Ugur explains that Oyku's father is like a brother to him, and they're trying to find out what Asu is up to. "For the good of the child, please answer this question: What is Asu's plan?"
Candan is leaving a rental office. She gets a call from Mu-rat. She tells him she can't see him right now. She's busy looking for a house to rent. She wants to be near Oyku.
Mufide is in a grocery store. The clerk says something snide about Ugur, and Mufide informs him that her son is hard working and honest. He got up early this morning to do his work. Suddenly, in walks Candan. She asks the store clerk whether he knows of any houses to rent in the neighborhood. He tells her he doesn't. Mufide's radar tells her that Candan is a good person (and apparently an eligible woman), and she speaks up and tells Candan that she has a neighbor who has a house to rent. "If you give me your phone number, I'll call her after I speak with her." Candan gives her her phone number. Mufide tells her, "My son is a good person and hard working. I'll ask him to help you." Candan thanks her and leaves. The clerk teases Mufide about trying to find a novia for Ugur. She admits that he's caught her, but what can she do? "If I don't help him, he'll never do so for himself."
Ugur calls Demir to let him know that he spoke with the lawyer, but the guy wouldn't tell him anything. Demir rightly calls him stupid for thinking that the lawyer would give him information about his clients. Ugur explains that he told the lawyer that a little girl's life was in danger. Demir tells him to stop playing detective. Ugur says to himself, "I'll figure out the mystery by myself, you'll see."
After hanging up on Ugur, Demir accidentally hits his finger with a hammer. The boss sees what has happened, and he gently suggests to Demir that he find another kind of work, that he isn't really cut out for construction. Demir understands, but he doesn't have any real work experience, and so no one will hire him. "I have to find work so I can care for my daughter." The boss said he raised two daughters working in construction, and now they're both in the university. He tells Demir, "I know what it's like to work hard to give your children the best." [I'm not sure what the boss's point is. Is he simply patting himself on the back? He seems too nice to be doing that, but....]
At school, Oyku and Mercan have finished lunch, and Mercan suggests they go outside. Oyku agrees and starts putting everything away. Suddenly she stops and looks thoughtful. Mercan asks whether something is wrong. Oyku tells him there's something she was going to do after she finished lunch, but now she doesn't remember what it is. [I'm hoping that the envelope with the pills inside is still on the floor, and that she'll see it and remember, but we'll have to wait for the next episode to find out.
Thank you Juanita! Another masterfully written recap with all the emotions and happenings related perfectly.
Loved how Oyku always outsmarts Ilayda! And then she continued later in questioning Asu about why she had abandoned her and in warning Asu not to speak to Candan so harshly. The little girl has gumption.
"Sevgi and Ugur enter the classroom. As usual, Ugur can't shut up. He insists on giving advice and making an ass of himself." Good grief! What is Sevgi thinking? Is there an ass in Snow White? Ugur would play the part perfectly!
I cheered when Candan grabbed Asu by the arm, like a lioness protecting her young. I'm wondering if Candan will get MuRAT to intervene and try to help Demir with the inevitable custody battle.
Mufide was really cute in trying to find Ugur a girlfriend. Oh if she only knew that she might be opening up a can of worms.
Poor Demir, I hope he survives working in construction. His ankle looked really bad, but did you notice that after he hit his thumb with the hammer, he stopped limping?
Juanita, "[I'm hoping that the envelope with the pills inside is still on the floor, and that she'll see it and remember) Oh I hope so too, but when the pills fell out of her backpack, I really expected Ilayda to see them and pick them up to hide them.
Many thanks, Rgv Chick, for your appreciative and insightful comments. I especially loved your "What is Sevgi thinking? Is there an ass in Snow White? Ugur would play the part perfectly!" And also your description of Candan with Asu as "a lioness progecting her young." Yes!
No, I didn't notice that once Demir had hurt his thumb, he stopped limping. Not sure what to make of that. Perhaps a slip on the actor's part?
I too expected Ilayda to take advantage of the dropped pills, but at least in last night's episode, there was no sign that she'd noticed. Although who knows what will happen tonight? A couple of times, Mercan seemed to look in the direction of the aisle where the pills had been dropped, but that too apparently meant nothing. I confess that I'm not feeling good about this, but I have an overactive imagination of disaster, so I've learned to downplay it. Sort of. Sometimes. :-)

Juanita, I thought you were giving us only highlights and off to bed early! Instead you did another terrific recap.
Demir's ankle looked exactly like mine when I sprained it at the Bluegrass Festival in Marin County many, many years ago.
Somehow I was thinking that the kind construction project manager might have an idea of a "safer" way for Demir to earn a living. Maybe that will come to pass tonight. Fingers crossed.
Yep, Ugur never disappoints. He does have a good heart but Demir was right. How in the world did he think the lawyer would rat out his clients? I actually thought he'd try to charm and wheedle the receptionist for information, a better option IMHO. The lawyer will probably tell Cemal right away.
If Candan moves to Demir's neighborhood, this would probably put paid to another of Cemal's plans: get Candan to fall for him.
After Asu left I had the impression that Oyku was upset with her father for not having made Asu go away forever. This would be a fairly normal reaction of an eight year old. She's normally very mature for her years. But she really, really has an instinctive aversion to her mother. It's not only the abandonment. I think she senses the real issue: $$$
novelera, I had every intention of giving just highlights, but somehow I couldn't make my fingers stop typing. They seem to have a will of their own. However, I haven't yet given up hope of just highlights some day. :-)
I too would love to see the construction boss come up with a good solution to Demir's wish for a job. Everything we've seen of the boss makes him seem understanding and sympathetic, but last night's episode left everything up in the air. As, of course, an episode is supposed to do.
I hope you're right about Candan's move to Demir's neighborhood putting an end to Cemal's plan, but I think his thirst for vengeance is strong enough to overcome that. He does, after all, have a car. All he'd have to do is kick his plan into high gear. The casual or "accidental" meetings with Candan would be replaced by a more obviously intentional wish to see her. I hate to say this, but if I didn't know what Cemal was really like, I might well choose him over the scruffier, less polished, seemingly less successful Demir. So I think Demir may still face the threat of losing not just Oyku but Candan as well. This is, after all, a telenovela. :-)
Juanita, thanks for staying up late to give us a wonderfully thorough recap! Appreciate it!
LOL, Rgv Chick, “Is there an ass in Snow White?” Well, there is one now. As Sevgi and Ugur went up the stairs, the camera focused on a paper heart affixed to a door. Noooo.
2,000,000.00 TL = 251,830.00 USD Not enough of inheritance to retire on but probably more money than any of the old gang has ever seen.
Demir means "iron" in Turkish. That’s why he told Oyku he is the Invincible Iron Man.
dondi356
Thanks very much, dondi356, for your perceptive and helpful comments. I was struck by your saying that the inheritance was equal to $251,830 US. I confess that I didn't try to read the actual document but instead depended on the captions, which said "250 millones." I guess I incorrectly assumed the amount was in dollars, although that did seem awfully high. I also checked the English captions, which read "250,000,000 inheritance." So is that the amount in pesos? Actually, dondi, I'm very glad you read the Turkish will and then figured out the exchange rate between Turkish liras and US dollars. As you say, $251,830 USD is not enough to retire on, but it's a heck of a lot, especially to people like Demir, Asu, and Cemal.
Thanks also for pointing out that "Demir" in Turkish means "iron." That makes Demir's statement to Oyku much more understandable.
I hadn't noticed the paper heart on a door as Sevgi and Ugur were going up the stairs. I want to echo and expand your Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
We get a short rewind at the construction site. The boss knows what it’s like to work hard to give your kids a good life. He tells Demir if he’s careful, he can stay. Get checked out by the doctor and once he is better, come back to work. God bless you, Demir says to his boss. The boss is a very good man.
We are at play practice. Sevgi gives direction, now Mercan comes closer and kisses the princess. Mercan kisses Oyku’s forehead. The “dwarves” look on. Another kiss. Ilayda is upset and looks away. The princess wakes and everyone is happy (especially Mercan). Well done kids and we are done for the day! That’s when Ugur shows up.
Sevgi is annoyed; rehearsal is over. If this is too much of a commitment for him, then she doesn’t need his help. No, no he loves being her assistant. He loves the theater so much. He even wrote down some ideas. Really? asks Sevgi a little sarcastically. Of course, answers Ugur. And then he blurts, I think we should go out to dinner. She gives a gasp. He continues, we could talk about the play, I could show you my notes. We can go after I take Oyku home. He continues to make a fool of himself until she says, fine, but only for a coffee. Remember the pizzeria where we ran into each other? How could she forget-- he dumped a lemonade in her lap. Well there’s a coffee shop next door. Fine. We see a smile on Sevgi’s face after Ugur and Oyku leave.
Ugur and Oyku arrive home. She warns him later not do anything that will upset her teacher. Ugur asks Oyku to “tell your teacher to be nice to Uncle Ugur because he’s the best uncle in the world. I join with Oyku in saying, Ay Ugur!
They see that Demir is home early. Oyku wants to know what happened to his finger and does it hurt. Demir tells a white lie, I got it caught in a door. He sends Oyku off to wash up. Ugur told him not to work construction. Demir admits he hit himself with a hammer. Ugur laughs and teases Demir.
Urgu has to leave to get ready for his date. Oyku tells Demir that Ugur us going out with her teacher. What? Demir warns him not to mess things up with Oyku’s teacher. Oyku warns him, don’t be weird in front of her.
Oyku wants to care of Demir. She will make soup. He reminds her that Asu is coming. He gets up to help her because using the stove is dangerous. The soup is done and Demir says it’s delicious. He sends Oyku over to the table to get his painkillers. Then he asks her if she took her meds today. No, she forgot. Demir gets angry, why didn’t you take them? How could you forget? Get them and take them now. She goes to her bookbag. They are not there. He starts yelling at her again. Dad, why are you yelling? They are only vitamins. Then Oyku thinks and goes quiet. Demir goes to get her meds. Oyku has a flashback to Ihsan. She asks him, does dad need to know? Are the meds expensive? Ihsan says you need them every day. Don’t worry your dad will take care of it. Oyku connects this to another flashback--Demir telling her she need to take vitamins every day from now on. Demir comes back with the meds and she takes them.
Asu arrives with Cemal. He waits in the car down the block and around the corner while she walks to the house. Demir answers the door and Asu asks, is she ready? Demir warns Asu to take it easy or she will have to deal with him. Asu gets impatient watching Demir lovingly help Oyku get ready to go. He asks Asu how she is taking Oyku. By bus? Why not a cab? Oyku doesn’t mind. Demir watches, worried until they are out of sight.
dondi356
They reach Cemal’s car and he gets out to greet Oyku. What are we going to do, Oyku asks Asu? You will find out when we get there. Oyku insists she wants to know and says, you can’t force me to do something I don’t want to do. And you didn’t tell me we’d be going with him, pointing at Cemal. Dad won’t like it. You won’t tell your father. Yes, I will. Oyku and Asu argue back and forth. Cemal laughs because Oyku reminds him of someone. (wonder who?) Finally Asu tells Oyku, we are visiting your grandfather. Oyku looks a bit puzzled and asks, I have a grandfather, too?
They show up at the hospital. Cemal says to make it fast. Asu says don’t worry. He bends down to tell Oyku, go say hi to your grandpa. Asu enters the room and greets her dad with, what’s up old man, still alive? Well, I brought your granddaughter. Oyku is standing in the doorway. She warns Sezer not to tell her anything. He nods his head in agreement. Asu calls, Oyku come meet your grandfather. Oyku approaches his bed slowly. Asu takes a seat a few feet away. He holds out his hand and Oyku takes it. He smiles at her and slips her the note. Asu doesn’t notice. There are no words exchanged between Oyku and Sezer.
Asu breaks it up saying, that’s enough, wait outside Oyku. Oyku and Sezer wave goodbye to each other and Oyku leaves. Asu tells her father, you saw her. You have a daughter and a granddaughter. I have a copy of your will and now you have seen your granddaughter. We have an agreement. He nods. Oyku starts to unfold the note but puts it away quickly before Asu sees it.
As they leave, Asu asks Oyku if she thinks her grandfather seems like a good person. Oyku gives an uh-hum. Asu continues, who would have thought the man in there abandoned his daughter when she was a baby? And who would have thought that the girl I abandoned 8 years ago would meet the person who abandoned me.
Ugur is getting ready for his date by spraying something all over his jacket. Mufide comes in and says take it outside; don’t spray that crap in here. Crap? This is expensive deodorant, mom. Mufide thinks it smells like rotten apples. She asks him why he’s dressed up. He tells her he has a date.
Mufide is happy to hear it. But she tells him she had a nice girl lined up for him. She was looking for a house in the neighborhood. Very nice girl and pretty. Ugur seems interested. Was she that beautiful? Mufide gets annoyed by this question, saying he already has someone. Is he thinking of cheating? Ugur says well, it could be plan B. She hits him and calls him shameless. They make up quickly and hug. She tells him to use cologne next time and with that, Ugur leaves for his date.
Demir is outside trying to get Asu on the phone when Oyku arrives home. Demir is relieved to see her. To Asu he says, I was calling. Where were you? Oyku will tell you. Let’s go inside dad. Bye!
Oyku shows Demir the note and tells him, my grandfather gave it to me. Your grandfather? Yes, we went to a clinic. I saw Asu’s father. He’s sick. He gave me this note. He didn’t want Asu to notice.
Demir starts to read: Dear Oyku, I’m sorry for being late to everything. I heard you just met your mother. I met her recently, too. To be honest, it’s all my fault. Demir gets up and leaves the room to read the rest. What you are about to read is important. Even if you’re young you need to know. My entire fortune… Oyku interrupts and Demir says wait. She asks, what does it say? Demir is stunned. Now he understands why Asu wants Oyku. He crumples the note. Oyku asks again about the note. Demir responds by telling her he’s got a job to do and he has to take her to Mufide.
Cemal and Asu are driving and he asks Asu if she’s ok. She doesn’t know and stop asking. She wants him to pull over because she feels like walking. Cemal will walk, too. He doesn’t want to leave her alone. She wants to be alone. He pulls over and lets her out. Tells her to be careful.
dondi356
Ugur is waiting at the coffee shop. He calls the waiter over. He asks him to play romantic music when Sevgi arrives. He slips the guy some money. As Sevgi walks through the door, the waiter blasts something very loud and she is startled. The other patrons are startled as well.
He yells at the guy to shut the music. Ugur takes her coat and they sit. Ugur presents her with a bouquet. He babbles something like she is the most precious flower in the garden. (this scene will be painful to watch) She accepts the flowers graciously and then there is a very awkward silence. Thank goodness the waiter finally comes over. She orders a coffee and so does Ugur.
Then Sevgi asks, weren’t we going to discuss your ideas about the play? Yes, right, of course. And he starts to babble nonsense about the play. She asks how long he studied theater. Not long because he had to quit for other things. His late father was a businessman who didn’t know much about art. He told Ugur he would never make money as an actor. So Ugur joined the wrestling team. She laughs. Sevgi shares that her father is like this, too. Ugur asks what her father does for a living. Oh, he’s a retired police captain. Ugur chokes on his coffee. (Oh boy. Please don’t tell me he’s the captain our guys know.)
Demir calls Asu. He has thought it over and he will give her custody of Oyku. He can’t take care of her and she has money. It’s better if you take her. At first she’s surprised, but then says he’s the old Demir again. He wants to meet up with her.
Demir shows up and tells Asu, I’m gonna tell you something you will like. I know everything you’ve been planning. I know your father is leaving his fortune to Oyku. She tries to play dumb, what you are talking about? Demir tells her, you just want Oyku for the money. What kind of mother are you? This is low even for you. Abandoning her once wasn’t enough and you will do it again when you have the money. WelI, Demir won’t allow this. He’s taking care of Oyku. Asu asks if Demir thinks he can get the money. Demir doesn’t care about the money he just wants his daughter. You can’t come between us. You will have to kill me first, he says. Stay away, and with that, he leaves.
Demir limps over to Mufide’s. He takes Oyku home. She asks, dad where did you go? It was something urgent. So this thing with Asu is urgent? What did you talk about? He bends down to Oyku’s level, looks her in the eyes and says, I made something very clear to her. She is never separating us. I let you see each other but from now on, you will never see her again. Oyku is happy and gives dad a kiss.
Asu shows up at the hospital. She’s pissed. The bastard told Oyku everything. The nurse tries to stop Asu as she races down the hall and enters Sezer’s room. He’s not there. Where is he? Uh, Miss Asu, he passed an hour ago. We tried to reach you. Talk to his doctor for details. Close up on stunned Asu.
And we are out.
dondi356
What a wonderful recap, dondi356! Reading it was like watching the episode all over again (except I could move more quickly past the excruciating scenes with Ugur). Many thanks once again!
Since I've mentioned the scenes with Ugur, I guess I don't have to say that I found them all very painful. He's such an idiot, though that may be being unkind to idiots. Jeez, spraying deodorant all over his jacket! I strongly hope her father is the police captain who knows Ugur all too well.
OK, enough about Ugur. I enjoyed the scene where Oyku is being assertive with Asu and is insisting that she will tell her father no matter what Asu wants.
Though I love the characterization of Oyku, including her precocious emotional maturity, I had my doubts about the scene where she pieces together memories of two past occurrences to (perhaps) realize why Demir is so bothered by her forgetting to take her "vitamins."
I was troubled when Demir crumpled up the note that Sezer gave to Oyku. I hope he doesn't throw it away. The note could be very helpful in a court case contesting custody. Demir should put it somewhere very safe.
I'm still unsure what to make of Cemal's feelings about Asu. When she gets out of the car, he tells her to be careful. Does he say this because he cares for her, or because she's his ticket to sharing a lot of money? Or both?
I was pleased when Demir told Asu that he doesn't care about the money, all he cares about is Oyku. And pleased, too, when Asu is frustrated at the end of the episode. (Oops, I usually try to keep my mean streak hidden. :-) )
Another fantastic recap, dondi! I really enjoyed this episode. I like the ones where we get forward progress.
That visit to Sezer (thanks, dondi, for the name) was pretty heartbreaking. Asu is a sociopath. Why could she not have allowed Sezer to spend more time with his grandchild? She rushed the child out of there as soon as the "letter of the law", or his demand to see Oyku or the will would be cancelled, was accomplished.
And the way they filmed the scene made it clear that Sezer immediately recognized the type of person his granddaughter is. She immediately put her hand in his, not something every 8 year old would do with a stranger hooked up to hospital equipment.
I agree. I hope Demir kept the note. I can't believe they didn't have the voice-over of Demir reading the WHOLE note. I suspect there's a lot more. And the fact that Sezer didn't want Asu to see it tells me he may have included something about his daughter's character that he's noticed in her visits to him.
I couldn't believe Ugur put deodorant on the outside of his clothes. What? But I do enjoy his relationship with his mother. We've noticed that she likely babies him too much, perhaps contributing to his feckless life. But he gives her that love back in spades. I'm not opposed to a relationship with Sevgi. A good, strong woman could perhaps change him. And, once he's not trying so hard, he might be like he's been in some of his good scenes with Demir, loyal and at times clever.
Yes, the scene in the coffee shop was painful. But I did learn a new word: café cargado which they both ordered. I thought upon hearing it that it meant fully charged with milk and sugar, but no. It means black coffee, or strong coffee.
I also thought that Oyku caught on that her father knew about her illness because of his nervous reaction to her having missed her medicine. But, if she were to be logical, she might think he has money for medicine because of the whopper he told her about their being rich because of a land sale.
I had to laugh at the exchange between Asu and Oyku...two little girls bickering. And then Cemal insinuated that Oyku got her stubbornness from Asu. One point for Cemal!
Ugur spraying himself and the jacket was ridiculous but so like Ugur. I was expecting Sevgi to wiggle her nose when she got close to him; so maybe the smell wasn't that strong. If Sevgi's dad is really the captain who knows Ugur and Demir so well, Ugur is in deep doodoo. He'll need much more than deodorant spray to start smelling peachy clean.
Juanita, "I was troubled when Demir crumpled up the note that Sezer gave to Oyku. I hope he doesn't throw it away." I too was afraid that Demir might toss that paper, but then I thought that maybe he was only taking out his anger on the paper. He is smart enough to know that the letter is his guarantee to keeping Oyku; so I highly doubt that he will throw it away.
I'm actually surprised that it has taken Oyku this long to figure out that Demir knows about her illness. I really thought she would suspect something was up the very first time he gave her the "vitamins" and insisted that she be sure to take it. Now that she has figured out that Demir knows, I'm afraid she will also figure out that Demir was lying about getting the money from a land sale.
Oyku's visit to Sezer was very touching. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, IIRC, Sezer asked the nurse to help him write the letter before Ugur went to visit his lawyer; so he knew right off the bat to relay that info directly to Oyku without Asu's knowledge. It seems that Sezer has known about Asu for quite a long time. I have no doubt that he knew exactly what kind of person she is; and her attitude toward him during her visits must have spoken volumes. I'm wondering if Sezer was having Asu followed too.
I'm with everyone about being confused about Cemal's true intentions and feelings toward Asu. I does seem like he cares for her. Maybe he was just trying to push her to get the money so that they could ride off into the sunset. And being that the condition was that Asu raise Oyku, he'd be killing two birds with one stone: he'd have his little family (I'm thinking that he still has doubts about Demir being Oyku's bio dad) and he would destroy Demir.
Thank you everyone. Great comments!
Sorry so late to respond. I've been very busy with work related stuff--even over the weekend and it will continue into this week as well.
Yes, Juanita, we hope Demir keeps the note. He's a smart guy but let's hope his emotions did not get the better of him and he destroyed it.
novelera, I hope you are right about Segvi/Ugur. It's so painful to watch right now. I imagined myself choking as Ugur was spraying. Surprised Sevgi or anyone couldn't smell him a mile away.
Rgv Chick, I think you are right about the timing. Sezer was smart but Asu was obvious, too. Waiting for Cemal's and Asu's next move. Will a DNA test come into play? Will Cemal mess with a test to prove he's Oyku's father?
Demir and Oyku do this dance around her illness. It's like Demir said to Ugur, don't say it out loud and it won't be real. At least Oyku must realize by now that Demir will not abandon her because of this.
