La herencia Friday #21 8/12/22 Notes from the Couch . . .

Here are my highlights.  This is in no way complete so please add anything I omitted.

*Sara is being set up to take the fall for the fertilizer failure. Most of the brothers and not even Juan will cut her a break although he is more ambivalent than his siblings. Lucas is on her side and Pedro is ready to take  advantage of her in this situation. We learn that the insurance will not cover the loss if the cause is determined to be human error. She ends up taking full responsibility and offers up her portion of the inheritance to compensate the company for the loss. Juan offers to do the same but Sara sticks to being fully responsible. The company has a rainy day fund just for such occasions but  the majority of the brothers don’t want a penny of their money helping to save Sara. Her future with the family and in the business depend on the results of the soil analysis.  Juan says they can always sue the fertilizer company if the analysis warrants it.

*After talking in private to Juan and seeing that he still doesn’t fully trust her, Sara tells him that when it is proven she had no role in the crop failure, she hopes he apologizes to her from the bottom of his heart.

*Pedro realizes how much Juli is enjoying the situation. He tells her a jealous woman is capable of anything snd have the best strategies. She knows the avocado debacle is working for him and helping to undermine Juan and could make him and Sara break up.  That also works for her.

*Juli makes a call and  makes sure that the results of the analysis will be sent directly to her. Supposedly it will take a month.

*Pedro tries to take Sara’s semi-estrangement from Juan as an opportunity to put the moves on her and invites her out to dinner. She accepts but ends up talking to Lucas instead.  She explains to Lucas that she didn’t  lie to him. She herself wasn’t aware of her feelings about Juan until she realized she was in love. Lucas admits that his brother is a tough businessman but is a good man. She must have known that because she felt in love with him, right? They end up on good terms.

*Pedro undercuts Juan’s authority  telling Mr. Henry that Juan doesn’t know how to run a business  but if he sticks with him he will get him his avocados and take care of him.  He tells Mr. Henry he can help by not investing any more money in the company with Juan in charge.

*Modesto is on a roll and tells Pedro off for breaking his son's heart. He will never forgive him for that. Next, he stops by to give Bea a piece of his mind.  She explains that the affair was a response  to the mistreatment and beatings at Cornelio's hand. He blames her for not leaving Cornelio rather than having an affair. Okay . . .

*Rosa brings  shopping bags full of foods to Jessica’s new home.

*Brandon complains to Dulce about losing his room to Brayan and his wife.

*Juli reluctantly goes out to eat with a determined Mateo when she really wanted to invite Juan out to eat.

*Rosa has an "attack" when Jessica suggests that she invite the whole Cruz family over for dinner, .

*Simón takes Paloma out to a romantic dinner with promises of a big surprise coming her way. Today is a very special day.

*Deb and Prospi stop by the store and Deb gets all bitchy because Tadeo is there. Bea says that Rosa never minded. Prospi says Tadeo stays.

*Deb convinces Cornelio to take Tadeo on the run on her dime. First,  Cornelio poisons Tadeo's mind against his Uncle Pedro and then convinces Tadeo to go on a “trip” to the beach with just him.  Cornelio's plans are  ruined when Tadeo hears Brandon and Dulce talking about going to the beach and has to share his own plans.

* In the last scene Juan hears his father telling him: He needs to be more alert. He could be sleeping with the enemy. The coin has been tossed and it has two sides. On the good side, he has the shelter provided by his brothers and father but on the  bad side, he has to dodge the  crises and fights that happen in living every day. He needs to remember not to try to do it all alone but to rely on his brothers.  He needs to avoid blocking  himself off  or allowing  anyone to hide information  from him no matter who they might be.

Yikes! In this man's world, the women keep getting the blame.

The real person responsible for the whole mess is Severiano who felt entitled to have sex with whomever and whenever he wanted. What a lousy role model but they treat him like Saint Severiano. Really?

I couldn't believe Modesto seeing Cornelio as the victim when he was the one who had mistreated and beat Bea in the first place. Really?

Too many “grown up” who are still “bouncing baby boys.”

All that being said, I cannot wait until Monday! ; )

We need some action on Monday.

Thank you for your "notes from the couch", Jarifa. You got it all.

It's a wonder there are no bio-kids of Seve's coming out of the woodwork, for such a mujeriego that he was.

When did Lucas get hit by lightning, forgive Sara's "lies", and start being nice to her? Did I miss an episode somewhere? QTH?

Corny definitely is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, taking legal advice re: Tadeo from Severiano's slutty concubine Deb.

Well, does this mean Sara & Juan aren't novios anymore? Seemed like it to me, the way he treated her in that meeting. Yeesh.

I really don't think Juli sabotaged the fertilizer, but I do think she might sabotage the soil reports that will follow.

This little town is worse than Peyton Place.

doris, “Peyton Place”: I haven’t thought about that movie for awhile but it sure fits.

Jarifa, thank you for another exceptional recap. I am having a difficult time trying to follow the dialog so truly appreciate your relating all the details so clearly.

“Too many “grown ups” who are still “bouncing baby boys” had me laughing and nodding my head in vigorous agreement. Perfect.

Another glum episode saved only by Simon and Paloma. Wait – what?? I can’t believe I just wrote that! The truth truly does hurt.

More surly snarling from the fam as well as deceptively cray cray fist clenching Juli. The unrelenting hostility would be enough to kill any long term stable romance, let alone one that is barely budding. Juan is in a tough spot but he has not handled the situation well, throwing verbal barbs at Sara along with everyone else, hanging her out to dry.

doris, your comment that “I really don't think Juli sabotaged the fertilizer, but I do think she might sabotage the soil reports that will follow” makes a lot of sense. You’re always one step ahead.

“He blames her for not leaving Cornelio rather than having an affair”. Umm, really Modesto? How quickly you caught the bros’ chronic crankiness. At least he stopped Cornelio when he stepped menacingly toward Bea. I felt for her, she’s been punished enough for her infidelity. Basta! I pity Tadeo for having two terrible fathers.

More histrionics from Rosa, Berta following her, laden down like a pack mule.

I was lost at what transpired between Prospi and Paloma’s father. Could someone kindly tell me if it was anything important? Does Prospi have an office? Does he actually do any work?

This story is flatlining and needs a shot of adrenaline. Stat! 😊

Speaking of, in the opening credits one of the boyz is riding a horse shirtless. I am so mesmerized I keep trying to look at the face but I’m too distracted. Is it Simon??

Jarifa, I so appreciate your stellar summary. I am hoping the action ramps up, with more outside scenes, beautiful horses and handsome riders.

Diana

Amazing highlights, Jarifa!

ITA with your first comment. With every part of it.

"I really don't think Juli sabotaged the fertilizer, but I do think she might sabotage the soil reports that will follow." I still have my suspicions about Juli sabotaging the fertilizer, but I agree that she'll definitely sabotage the soil reports, doris.

"Another glum episode saved only by Simon and Paloma. Wait – what?? I can’t believe I just wrote that! The truth truly does hurt." Lol, this had me smiling, Diana. If Simón and Paloma save the episode, something is going TERRIBLY wrong.

"I pity Tadeo for having two terrible fathers." ITA.

"This story is flatlining and needs a shot of adrenaline. Stat! 😊" So true.

P.S.: Just testing something. I hope it works .
(In case it doesn't, I tried to make the words "testing" and "works" bold the HTML way. I really hope it works.)

Gracias, Jarifa.

Julie Stepford had to have sabotaged the fertilizer. Not that she did it herself, but there were a few suspicious phone calls about it that nobody overheard. My vocabulary, though, is weak on agricultural matters.

She still doesn't get that this won't get Juan back to her if he doesn't love her "that way" in the first place. None of the brothers has to settle for a tepid relationship.

If I were Sara I would be so out of there, inheritance be damned. She has a financial degree and can work anywhere if she also speaks English.

As for why there appears to be no other bio children, maybe Severiano's other side chicks used contraception. To watch these things one would think that nobody in Mexico uses contraception but it's free and current statistics point to just under replacement rate rather than growth. Fertility rate is currently estimated at 2.1 per woman.

Finally, I am peeved as all hell that most gringo characters speak Spanish so badly. This almost promotes the idea that Americans have some perverse duty to be incompetent at foreign languages. Some people regard me as a snob or a freak because my pronunciation is like that of the actors on this network and my pronunciations are perfect in three other European languages although I am not fluent in them.

Diana,

Prospi is jealous thinking that Sal is going out with Deb. Sal explains that Deb came in for a drink. Sal adds that she was sitting with Propsi’s “home helper lady” when Deb told her that she and Sal were a couple. Prospi wants to know why he didn’t correct her. Sal asks how could he do that? If he told the truth, Prospi would be dead and buried by now. They tap on the table in agreement. What to do?

It was funny with Bea trying to hear them.

Should be Paloma trying to hear them.

Urban, "Some people regard me as a snob or a freak because my pronunciation is like that of the actors on this network and my pronunciations are perfect in three other European languages although I am not fluent in them."
I have two questions:
1) WHAT? Just because you have a good pronunciation people call you a snob or freak? I'm tired of this world.
2) Okay, now I'm curious: which other languages do you speak?

"Another glum episode saved only by Simon and Paloma. Wait – what?? I can’t believe I just wrote that! "
Diana - Hahahahaha!!! I know, right?

Jarifa - thank you for clarifying that convo at the bar between Prospi and Sal. The dialog is very hard for me to follow and the closed captions are horrible. I can't believe I'm watching a telenovela where I'm relying on CCs.

I had French in school for six years but I am very much out of practice. The other day I had to look up the word for money.

Spoke German as a child but forgot a lot of it until I started going to the opera. If the singers are articulating clearly I can understand it after about 10 minutes. I can't converse in it because the grammar is very weird.

I love the sound of Italian and want to learn it since I want to go there.

When some former colleagues heard me order in restaurants they had funny looks on their faces except for the one who lived in Japan for two years. He learned enough Japanese to deal with menus but not to converse.

One of my best friends is re-learning Russian. I can't read its alphabet but I can pronounce it after hearing it once.

I was a theatre major. If I had been a little thinner and a lot prettier the world would never have heard of Meryl Streep.

Except from my native language (Greek), I speak English (obviously) and I am learning Spanish. I have also started learning Russian (I was obsessed with this language every since I was very young, lol) and I learnt basic German but I have forgotten mostly everything. Chinese and Czech sound interesting too, so I might take a look at them. I love learning.

Ah, yes, the Cyrillic alphabet is difficult, but very interesting. It's a nightmare the first time you look at it, but becomes easier with time. One of the hardest parts of Russian is that some letters aren't pronounced at all, or are pronounced differently depending on the intonation. As for the pronunciation, I only have one thing to say: I HATE that stupid stupid letter ы!

Thank you for the conversation translation Jarifa!! The guys' cheesy smiles as Paloma was staring, trying to hear the conversation was funny. Poor Prospi! I fear Rosa is his fate and that makes me sad. Unless of course she has a total personality AND wardrobe change. The least Deb can do is to transform him into the handsome hunk he really is!

Urban and Weirdo, I am very impressed by your language skills. Me? I'm happy when I understand a few words of dialogue here and there! The recaps and comments, all generous, informative and thoughtful are the only reason I can join in the fun.

Diana

Jarifa: Thank you very much for the recap of last night's episode.

1.) Where to begin OMG! Goldie Locks Sara is the Fall Girl for the fertilizer crisis.

2.) Villains still winning 24/7: Fast Forward.

3.) Modesto: REALLY ?

4.) Mary Poppins 2.0 cracks me up.

5.) Gold-Digger Debbie & Dante the Looter still plotting more looting.

6.) Paloma has a nice voice. Is the actress portraying her actually a singer in real life ?

7.) Prospero jealous of Sal dating Gold-Digger Debbie LOL.

8.) UA: How many mistresses did Scumbag Seve have ? 500+ ?

9.) Weirdo: Julieta needs a Karma anvil with her name on it. I do NOT like this spoiled whinny brat, who's jealous of Goldie Locks Sara.

10.) Diana: Tadeo needs to go to Dr. Phil ASAP.

11.) Goldie Locks Sara is the Telenovela Punching Bag: Being framed for embezzlement, sabotaging fertilizer & soil, etc.,

12.) Juan: Stop being an uppity jackass toward Goldie Locks Sara.

Steve Boudreaux

It drives me crazy that everyone just blames Sara. Sara came up with a proposal, they analyzed the pros and cons, had an entire board meeting and JUAN authorized the change, how exactly does that translate to all Sara’s fault? The way everyone is acting would only make sense if Sara changed the fertilizer in the middle of the night without telling anyone first.

It also drives me crazy that so many of these actors cam only portray anger via yelling their lines!!! It’s distracting and ridiculous

Jarifa, thank you for another great recap of all the fighting and feuding at Avocados R Us. I love all the avocado art all over the offices and building .

OT..
Listening to Daniel (Pedro ) say " Trust me. My word is green gold," I am convinced that he may be fluent in English .My bet is that he has studied it since he was young in school. I have taught people from many different counties who are at many different levels of proficiency in English . I read that it takes about six years to become fluent in English. Most people who begin to learn as adults never completely lose their accents , but their children speak without an accent and usually answer their parents in English , not their native languages. Years ago , I read that 75% of school students in the world choose to study English . After hearing Pedro and Juan speak a few words of English, I think that they are both fluent . Pedro sounded much better thsn tbe actor who is supposed to be Anerican.

It was always fascinating to me to hear my students switch effortlessly between English and their native languages .

As for Italian, our younger daughter studied for a semester in Florence. She only had a few years of Spanish in high school , but she managed to live there. I had a student from Italy and one from Argentina who became friends , and they would often help each other find the English word they wanted by saying the word in their language . My students even found similarities between Spanish and Arabic.

Even people who speak the same language can have very different accents . I learned some Arabic ,and my Middle Eastern students could tell what country the students who taught me the words were from . I had a young woman from Spain who became friends with two guys from Mexico . She used to tell me " I am speaking Spanish , I don't know what they are speaking ."

'Sara came up with a proposal, they analyzed the pros and cons, had an entire board meeting and JUAN authorized the change, how exactly does that translate to all Sara’s fault?'
It's pretty obvious that all these people KNOW they are in a telenovela. Well, maybe not Rosa. ;-)

I am an idiot. A δ is pronounced as a the. A θ is pronounced as a think.

And I accidentally deleted my comment...
I said:

"Avocados R Us" LOLOLOL!

Also,
" I had a young woman from Spain who became friends with two guys from Mexico . She used to tell me " I am speaking Spanish , I don't know what they are speaking .""
I watched a Spanish telenovela a few months ago called Velvet. I stopped watching it because it was very slow, but the accent was very different.
1) The ss are pronounced as a θ (as in think, this is where I made the mistake previously).
2) The double Ls are pronounced as Ls.
Mexican accent > Spanish accent. Change my mind.

Thank you, Jarifa, I haven't watched yet, but so I can't commentcon the epsiode, but I always love your notes from the couch.

I started learning English in schoold when I was 8 and it's true, the sooner you start, the easier it is. I learned Spanish from watching novelas and although I couldn't speak it fluently before, now I'm using it for work so I'm getting better. French came later, when I was a teen, but right now is the language I speak most.
Both my daughters speak French, but understand perfectly when I speak to them in Romanian (my mother tongue). I hope soon enough they start speaking it, too, they just need encouragement.
I also understand Italian and Portuguese, but I'm pretty much useless wheb it comes to math, chemistry, geography, biology and any other similar subject.

A friend of mine won a trip to Brazil in 1993 and went with her sister. They were in a group with a Portuguese woman who said the same thing vis a vis the Brazilian version of her language.

I have friends who can't distinguish the difference between Cockney and Australian accents. All major countries where English is commonly spoken have their versions of what is regarded as non-regional. Most are pleasant sounds. Nobody sounds more upoer-crust than a BBC newsreader or most of the actors in their crowns-and-gowns miniseries.

So.... on those rare occasions when I converse in Spanish I speak Televisa.

Thanks, Jarifa, I enjoy the show and then the recaps clear up all my questions!
Deb is unbelievably cruel. I couldn’t believe how she told Modesto about Tadeo. Also dumping the plate of food. I may be in the minority but I don’t enjoy her at all, she just makes me mad.

I’m with the group that thinks Juli did something to the fertilizer. I don’t trust her. I think she will end up like her mother. The other two are more like their dad. And thank goodness for him! Some light moments in this mostly angry cast.

Pedro is another one who just gets worse with each episode. And this was only the 21st! We have a long way to go. Waiting for something good to happen!

Liz

I agree. Dumping the food ontonthe white tablecloth was childish, disrespectful, and insulting. I want Sara to catch her in the act ASAP. Deborah is a malignant narcissist.

The actors portraying Pedro and Deb seem to be enjoying playing the bad guys . Pedro smirks and sideeyes his way through every episode . He is definitely the bad boy, but at least he isnt screaming and sobbing every episode like Simon and Mateo , who are just annoying cry babies .

Pedro is getting worse , so I am starting to give up hope that he might be redeemed .Somewhere deep inside , he must have memories of Juan taking Care of him and protecting him when they were living in that hovel. I guess I will have to accept that Juan is the galan who will get the girl despite his lack of charisma. I think Pedro is going to try to win over Sara to get one over on Juan, but then he will really call in love with her because she is as good as bread .And so it goes in these novelas....I

Okay, time to make a salad with my expensive little avocados .

OT...yes, Portuguese and Spanish are similar . I had a dentist from Brazil as a student ,and she made a tape of Portuguese songs for me.I understood a few words that were similar to Spanish...corazon, otra vez.

Now that I am watching Turkish Dizis, I have noticed some Turkish words that are similar to Arabic . English has quite a few words from Turkish and Arabic . Many of our three words that have 3 or more syllables are similar in Spanish because they come from Latin, whereas our shorter words are from Germanic roots.

I had an older woman from Portugal and younger students from Brazil . She told me that they weren't speaking Portguese ! Then I had an older woman from Paris who went to Quebec who told me that they don't speak French in Quebec .She used to correct me every time I tried to say something in French . Other people are so thrilled if you even attempt to say something in their language .

China has so many dialects that some of my Chinese students could only communicate with each other in English. Likewise with my students from India . In tiny Switzerland , people in different areas speak one of 4 languages ..French, Italian , German, Romansch(?). Languages are fascinating.

Adriana, I'm in awe...How wonderful you speak so many languages and are sharing your gifts with your daughters!

My dear grandmother passed in 1978 and she left money for my mother, her children and my aunt to take a trip. We ended up in Germany in 1980, primarily to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. My brother was in high school, taking German and planning to be an accountant. While traveling in Germany, everyone assumed German was his native tongue as he understood everything perfectly. After, he changed his mind and ended up teaching German, Latin and Special Education. I am so grateful for that trip we all had but primarily for completely changing the trajectory of his life.

There are times when something happens that transforms one's life. And happily so!!

Diana

Susanlynn, I always enjoy reading your experiences with your students!

"China has so many dialects that some of my Chinese students could only communicate with each other in English. Likewise with my students from India" was amazing.

Have you considered writing a book?

I loved that your Portguese student corrected you when you spoke French!

Diana

Gracias, Jarifa. Terrific job. You call them "notes," I call them "recap." I haven't watched the epi yet, but I've got all I need to know.

So Paloma and Simon were the only bright spot? Jeez!

Diana, yes, that's Simon shirtless on the horse in the opening credits. He's a royal pain with his Sara hating, but he's got a plus or two, no? ;>

Kind of sweet (though insulting) of Rosa to bring Jessica groceries at Adela's home. For a sec, I thought maybe there's hope for Rosa. But then she has a conniption about inviting the Cruz's for dinner. I hope it happens though. It would be hysterical.

The fertilizer needs to get cleared up soon. I'm soooo tired of everybody sticking this on Sara.

'Diana, yes, that's Simon shirtless on the horse in the opening credits. He's a royal pain with his Sara hating, but he's got a plus or two, no? ;>"

Oh my Niecie. You've got that right! Sigh. Thanks for the confirmation.

I am sort of hoping for a nice, intimate dinner for Rosa and Adela's fams. It would be so much fun!!

Diana

I have noticed that wardrobe always puts Rosa in bright , contrasting solid colors ..for example good and red.

Deb found her hat . Too bad.

Wardrobe really locked in these characters looks...the writers. Simon and his turtlenecks....Pedro and his three piece suits . ..Juli and her little Chanel inspired suits ...Berta and her severe dark sheath dress....Prospi and his vintage vests...Modesto and has manly apron

I bought avocados today. They were smaller than usual. Am wondering if they came from the Del Monte farm. :-o

Doris....ha, yes, the avocados I just bought were small ...and expensive ...3 for $5.

"I bought avocados today. They were smaller than usual. Am wondering if they came from the Del Monte farm. :-o" LOLOLOL!

Good one, doris!
