I'll post a recap of tonight's episode later tonight.

reina3 Ep. #50 p. 1 of 3

The episode begins at the Bosque de Arrayanes. Epifanio and his men are getting closer. Scenes of Epifanio alternate with some weird, unclear footage that includes something burning. Epifanio is apparently thinking about Teresa, and in his mind he says to her "You and I had our ups and downs. Don't worry, Teresita, I promise you that neither the gringos nor anyone else will bother you again." We see an evil grin on Epi's face. Uh oh!

Inside Higgins Hideaway, Oleg and the others are examining some of the data on the tapes. They see information about "Operation Yakare," that took place on November 10, 2017. Apparently it involved the killing of the candidate who was far ahead in the election in Paraguay. They also listen to audio of Jane Kozar and Ernie Palermo. Ernie tells her that "the hit man is one of his bodyguards." "Perfect," replies Kozar. Ernie says, "I'll give the order right away." Kozar tells him, "Remember, they always ask for photos." We then see a photo of a dead man. Teresa is bothered that this information will not see the light of day. Pablo tells her, "This info is the price for your freedom and my father's." Teresa then hears Epifanio calling her name. She and the others come outside and see Epifanio and half a dozen other men. She asks, "Weren't you supposed to come alone?" He explains that the men are sworn to protect the President of Mexico. He enters the hideaway. He asks Teresa whether the evidence she has seen will enable him to make a deal with the gringos. She replies, "With what's in there, you could ask for the White House and they'd give it to you."

Batman and Faustino are riding in the red truck. They talk about Sofia. Batman says that she's falling for Fedor, while Faustino insists she's in love with Mateo, and that Mateo is a better match. Batman and Faustino bet $10,000 on which one Sofia will finally choose.

Back at the hideaway, there's more talk about Kozar. Oleg says she mentioned Uriel several times. "We're guessing they're his companies, some in the US, others in tax havens." [I don't really understand who "they" and "his" refer to.] Epifanio sees the photo of Higgins and Kozar on the wall and takes it as a memento. Teresa demands that Batman and Sheila be permitted to return to Mexico. Epi at first says no, but then he gives in "because you've got me in a good mood." He then gives Teresa the money and tells her to count it. She closes the metal briefcase with the tapes. He then says, "Life is strange. We've had our ups and downs. And look at us now. Friends." Teresa replies angrily, "You think we're friends?" "At least we're not enemies," he responds. Pablo wants to know where his father is. Epi gives Pablo the location for his father and tells him his father has been moved four times this year. Teresa asks Epifanio whether he has a plan for how they'll get Pablo's father out. Epifanio tells her he's talking to the Nicaraguan ambassador. Teresa also asks how he plans to deal with the charges against her. She reminds him that she's wanted in the US and in several other countries. And the other members of the team as well. Epi says the US can't do anything about charges in other countries. Oleg points out that the US has contacts. Finally, Teresa gives Epifanio the metal briefcase containing the tapes. She reluctantly shakes his hand.

reina3 Ep.# 50 p. 2 of 3

Epifanio is about to leave. Teresa calls after him and says, "Epifanio, you know I don't really care about the money. What's most important is my freedom. Mine, and Batman's, and Pablo's. Keep your word." As Epifanio leaves, he says the words he had been thinking earlier (and rehearsing it in his mind?): "I promise you that neither the gringos nor anyone else will ever bother you again." After he's gone, Teresa shows the others that she has kept one of the tapes.

Well, I was right last week when I mentioned the timer that no one in TeamA seemed to notice. Now we see someone set off the timer. Oleg and the others suddenly hear a beeping. They realize it means there's a time bomb, and they race into another room. There's a huge explosion We then see Epifanio with an exultant grin on his face.

The scene shifts to Washington DC, where Aguilar is about to cooperate with Kozar. He enters the room and exchanges introductions with Kozar. He asks why she's involved in this. She makes it clear who's the boss. She says to the interpreter, "Tell him I'm not here to answer his questions but to hear his statement." However, she goes on to say that she's involved because she cares deeply about the future of the Mexican people.

Scenes of Aguilar's testimony alternate with scenes of Epifanio and his men leaving the Bosque de Arrayanes after the explosion. One of the men says he doubts that there were any survivors. Epifanio replies, "You made sure there were no air pockets where someone could breathe, right? Good job, Lt. Romo!"
He adds, "People like that cannot be trusted. Especially my goddaughter. I won't say I won't miss her. But that's life."

Aguilar makes it clear that he met with Epifanio Vargas on the day he became President of Mexico. "I presented the requests of those I represented, capos from the northern Mexico cartels. He mentioned specific events and laws that the capos wanted to see occur. Their desires were met, and Epifanio Vargas got paid a lot of money for making things happen.

As they're making their exit from the Bosque de Arrayanes, one of the men Epifanio brought with him ask how he knew there was a tunnel. He tells Epi he asks because of the large quantity of dynamite. Epifanio replies that he didn't know there was a tunnel. "I just wanted to blow her (Teresa) up to kingdom come." He adds that the money this cost was well invested.

Jane Kozar is pleased with Aguilar's statement. She tells him "You've done your part and now my country will do its..." She is interrupted by her cellphone indicating that an attachment has arrived. She clicks on it and sees the photo of Higgins and her. "Hold on a second, don't send anything yet," she says. Epifanio then calls her and asks, "Did you like the photo I sent?" She brings the interpreter with her into another room and instructs the interpreter to tell Epifanio that he's a fool if he think's I'd be scared by one photo." Epifanio informs her that it's not just one photo, he's got information going back many years, and recordings of her voice giving orders to kill people. There are checks, accounts, all the bribes she's made. At this point, Kozar through the interpreter asks what Epifanio wants. He tells her he'd like her to come visit him at the National Palace. When she refuses, he tells her her he'll call her again later so they can communicate virtually. He adds, "It's best if you forget what Aguilar told you, or you'll be very sorry."

reina3 Ep #50 p. 3 of 3

At what used to be his DEA office, Ernie asks Charlie whether he knew that Aguilar was going to give a statement today. Charlie then hands a folder to Ernie and tells him, "That's your new location. Guyana." Ernie is furious. "She's not going to get away with this!"

Kozar is VERY upset. She makes a phone call to Owen (who is Owen?) and says "We need to talk."

Faustino tries to reach Teresa. His call goes into voicemail. He leaves a message, giving her his new phone number. He says he'll try to reach the others. We then see Teresa with blood on her mouth, other parts of her face, and near her ear. Oleg, also bloodied, calls out "Teresa." Anton isvery badly hurt. Pablo seems moderately OK. Oleg attends to Anton and urges him to hold on, resist.

When Faustino gets back to the place they're staying, Sofia asks whether he has spoken to her mother. Faustino tells her he called and left a message. Sheila asks Faustino whether he brought what she asked. He hands her what I think is information about where to get an abortion.

In Colombia, Faustino's cousin the nun asks for Padre G's help in getting things to Faustino. She assures him that no one will bother them--a nun, a priest, and a nativity scene. She explains that she stuffed money into all the figures in the nativity scene! About $5 million. Alas, two men in a nearby van are watching them. When the nun (whose name I don't remember) and Padre G drive off, the two men follow them. We then hear Charlie tell someone, "We bugged Padre G's phone. She said Faustino had asked her to get money to him, and she asked the padre to accompany her. She mentioned Mateo. I have two men trailing them."

Ernie sees Charlie leave. He goes over to Charlie's desk. In Charlie's backpack, he finds what may be the "red" thing he was looking for, a book with names, addresses, notes, etc. He takes the book and goes over to someone else in the office and asks, "How'd you like to make an easy $500?"

Montaño is talking by phone to Epifanio, who wants something done that day. Montaño says he's about a kilometer away. Montaño then goes to a group of men and asks if they have radios, cameras, and loaded weapons ready. He then says if they want the money he has offered them, they need to remember just three words: Enter. Kill. Exit. Let's go!

Back at the DEA office, Ernie asks Charlie who he was talking to. Charlie informs him, "You're not my boss anymore. I don't have to answer your questions." Ernie admits he messed up, but says he thinks he and Charlie can fix things. "I found out Kozar is going to be at the same house as before. We can..." Charlie interrupts him. "Kozar is your problem." Ernie claims that Kozar will soon fire Charlie as well. Charlie replies that if she wanted to fire me, she'd have done so already. I don't want to lose my job."

Anton is lying on a bed, in very bad shape. Teresa is upset that they didn't see this coming. "Epifanio is an SOB. He had this planned from the beginning." Suddenly, she becomes even more alarmed. "My daughter, the others, he's going after them! Where is my cell phone?"

Mateo and Sheila are walking thgough the woods when he suddenly spots Montaño's soldiers heading toward the house where everyone is staying. Mateo gives her an axe to protect herself. She has to stay by herself while he--a much faster runner--will run as fast as he can to warn everyone. He bursts in and tells them what he's seen. Faustino takes his gun and tells everyone to wait there, he'll see what's going on. We see Montaño staring at the house as the episode ends.

reina3

Super job, Juanita. Muchísimas gracias. You called it on the bomb/timer. I feel so bad for Team A that not one of them saw this coming. Shame. I sure hope Anton makes it.

Till now, I’ve found all the business with Senator Kozar a bit snoozy, but last night’s epi was fierce.

I've been hoping that Our Team would betray Vargas after they got what they wanted. Now I know they will.

Run Mateo run. But how will our team defend themselves with only Faustino's and Batman's guns? Faustino seems to have an ace up his sleeve. The building is towering, so maybe he's got a surpise up in the steeple?

reina3

yes, excellent recap Juanita!

I like Faustino's call, Sofia will go with Mateo, I think he shines with the hands on stuff.

but wait, why is Mateo straying so far looking for firewood in a FOREST.

not sure about the timer thing, look like it was going forward (not backward) and that Epi's guys set their own charges.

what? no cell phone coverage in the hideout, and what was that shot of Faustino leaving his new phone with Tesa's recent call on it in the truck?

seems like first order of business should be digging out the tracker chips.

reina3

Thanks very much, Niecie in MD and deb, for your interesting and perceptive comments.

Niecie, I too hope that Our Team will betray Epi. Certainly they have more than enough compelling reasons to do so. I suspect whether they succeed in doing so may depend on whether there's a Season 4. I'm hoping there's not, and that Season 3 ends with justice for the good guys. And yes, I too wondered how TeamP can defend themselves against so many armed and dangerous men. It would be wonderful if Faustino does indeed have an ace up his sleeve, but I kinda doubt it. I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

deb, I can see either Mateo or Fedor for Sofia (or neither), but I still feel that Mateo will not make it to the end of Season 3. His "I'd die for you" statement seems to me like Chekhov's gun. It's got to go off. I can easily believe that there's no cell phone coverage in the hideout--what I find difficult to believe are the number of times in novelas where there is cell phone coverage in extremely remote places. I confess I must have missed the shot of Faustino leaving his new phone on the truck. And you may be right about the timer. What seemed strange to me is that the one I saw was very visible in the previous episode, but I didn't see it at all in last night's.

Reina3

Excellent recap, Juanita. Thank you very much.

This episode was reminiscent of the excitement in seasons 1 and 2.

You were right, Juanita, there was an explosion but I agree with deb about the timer increasing and that the bombs were set by Epi’s guys. So, what was the timer for? I hope there’s not another explosion. There’s got to be a way out for them. I can’t see Anton surviving. Sad.

I think Kozar was talking to Higgins on the recordings, not Ernie, although I could be mistaken. But it seems Ernie is headed down the same path as Higgins. IIRC, Owen was the guy who greeted Kozar at the secret meeting place.

Charlie has to go back to Colombia so he can be killed by Faustino---that’s if Faustino survives Montaño’s attack.

I’m worried there will be more awfully unnecessary deaths. Especially worried about Mateo. Then there’s Sister Margarita and Padre G. I hope Sheila and Batman survive and have their baby.

Who is Uriel?!

reina3

Many thanks, dondi356, for your great comments. I agree with you about deb's rightly pointing out that the timer you and I saw last week was increasing rather than decreasing. For me, that raises the question of why even have that timer? And why did it disappear? I don't think there will be a second explosion, and, like you, I don't think Anton will survive.

It's hard for me to keep Kozar's taped conversations straight. I recall one where the male voice sounded to me like Ernie's, but I could be mistaken. Thanks for identifying Owen.

I hope Faustino does manage to kill Charlie. As for other deaths, as I said in response to deb, I'm assuming that Mateo will die. I feel more hopeful about the others, but who knows? And I too am hoping that Sheila and Batman not only survive but have their baby.

reina3

Thanks a million for the terrific recap, Juanita. Late to the party. I normally work from home except for one day in the office on Mondays. Since Monday was the "official" New Year's holiday, I'm here at the office today.

I never even saw the timer inside Higgins Hideaway that others have mentioned. And I'm sure that the bomb that went off was set, with timer, by Epi's guys while he was inside promising Our Team things that he wouldn't have to do. IMHO Epi is toast. I can't believe Teresa won't find a way to finish him off after the massive betrayal.

I don't think Anton will make it. If he had that sort of wound in a city, there would be treatment in a hospital. But in a remote area like that...? He'd die before they could pack him out.

I'm pretty sure TeamP, now in Colombia, will manage to get away. Of course, this could be the occasion where Mateo gives up his life for Sofia. But Faustino, Batman, Sheila, Fedor, and Sofia will make it out. And, yes, Charlie is overdue for a shot in the head by Faustino. Charlie is apparently in D.C. and ordering his two guys to follow Padre G and Sister Margarita. We can count on Telenovela Airlines to get Charlie to the meet-up with Faustino and the two religious ones.

That was SUCH an action-packed episode.

reina3

I always love your comments, novelera, and this time was no exception. I hope you're right that Teresa will find a way to finish off scumbag Epifanio. Last night's episode repeatedly demonstrated what a creepy, petty, and dangerous man he is.

I too am assuming that most of TeamP will somehow manage to get away from Montaño's armed mercenaries. Whether Mateo will sacrifice his life for Sofia now or next week (closer to the gran final) isn't clear. As for Charlie, I assume he'll want to be present to watch his operation take down Padre G and Sister Margarita. A quick trip on Telenovela Airlines will get him there, right where Faustino can avenge Rocio's death. At least, I hope so.

Yes, last night's episode was action-packed, and that's likely to be the case with tonight's as well.

Reina3.
I'm thinking the timer was to show us how much time Epifanio had before Aguilar's statement. Senator Garcia had told him clearly that he only had 2hrs.
I could be wrong.

reina3

Hi mwendwaE, I'm happy to see that you're still with us. You raise an interesting idea, but the hideaway where the timer was located was apparently created by Higgins, who has been dead or missing for years. Why would he have set the timer to indicate how much time Epifanio had before Aguilar's testimony? I should add that I don't have a better explanation for the timer. For me, it remains a mystery.

#51 – Parte 1 de 3

In Colombia Montaño’s hired mercenaries are sneaking through the woods. That actor who plays Montaño probably loves his children and donates to the Humane Society, but he sure knows how to play a soulless killer.

Faustino looks out a steamed-up window in that odd tower in the hideout and Montaño shoots him in the arm. Then begins the usual hail of bullets. Our Team gets to the ground inside the place. Then they go out the back way to the forest. Deadeye Faustino keeps shooting his handgun and takes out a couple of the guys with automatic rifles. Then he realizes that it’s the trackers Epifanio made some of them wear that got them to his hideout.

In Ecuador TeamA has managed to bandage Anton and, I believe, stop the bleeding. The lights go out, probably from the blast. But Teresa, earning some more Girl Scout badges, manages to find some kerosene lanterns.

In Colombia we see Sheila hiding behind a tree with the axe and hearing all the shooting.

No matter how many mercs Batman and Faustino hit, there always seems to be a dozen following them. Batman earns Faustino’s admiration when he gets a head shot, using his last bullet, that saves Paloma.

I can’t remember who has trackers in their arms and who doesn’t. Faustino takes one out of Paloma. Montaño is ensconced in that Tower in their hideout and watching the trackers on his laptop.

In Mexico, D.F., Epi sneaks back into the country in the trunk of a car. General Corrupto tells him that the doctor’s say he’s in tip-top health. [The doctor isn’t aware that Teresa Mendoza is alive or he wouldn’t be so optimistic.] Epifanio crows that he’s going to beat Porfirio Diaz’s record for time in office. [I doubt it. Mr. Google tells me Diaz was president for 31 years. And is likely the reason why the Mexican Constitution has a limit of one term of six years.]

Delio and Epi are getting the Higgins cache out of the briefcase. Delio wonders if perhaps Epi went too far (in killing TeamA). Epi tells him he thought it over and decided that Teresa Mendoza with this kind of information is more dangerous than Kozar. He goes on to complain about the pardons in several countries she wanted, and that Batman could return to Mexico. “Does he look like Santa Claus?” Delio sort of shakes his head and opines: ”Donde pones el ojo, pones la bala. (Lit. Where you put your eye, you put the bullet. Or…you accomplish what you set out to do.) More lovely slang from Delio, who usually is less “colorful”. Now the gringos won’t have any choice but to bajale la crema a sus tacos dos o tres rayitas! (tone it down a bit).

reina3

#51 – Parte 2 de 3

Epi vaguely mentions to Delio that there could be some more uses to the drives he has in the briefcase. As usual, Delio gets nervous about this. Senator Garcia has called Epi about 5 times, and he isn’t picking up. [Maybe a little too much hubris, Epi?]

Back to Colombia. Mateo cuts the tracker from his arm with the axe and then does the same for Sheila.

Fedor tells Sofia that they need to get the trackers out. Just then Sofia stumbles, rolls down a slight hill and gets a piece of fallen branch embedded in her thigh.

Sheila has been caught by a merc. She raises her hand to beg for her life. We see the merc start to pull the trigger when Mateo bashes him with the axe.

Fedor gets Sofia’s tracker out and then his own. We see Montaño curse and kick the wall when he realizes he has lost his visibility of them.

In Ecuador Oleg remembers when he was in the military, and they had a task of rescuing some miners. There were five of them, but only two were still alive when they got to them. Pablo asks how long they survived, and Oleg tells him around 30 hours.

Sheila and Mateo are lost. [My compliments to deb, whose sharp eyes saw that Faustino’s phone was charging in the truck.]

Sofia schools Fedor in survival tactics. She insists that they must wash off the blood in the stream and try not to leave any sort of trail. When he is surprised at her skills, she reminds him of who her mother is!

Genoveva and Susana are celebrating the imminent downfall of Epifanio Vargas. When Susana reminds her it’s not over yet, Bebita replies that it’s close. Bebita thinks she’ll probably have to leave the country. She puts on some music. They drink and drink. They dance. And eventually Susana kisses Bebita, very briefly, but is then mortified.

In D.C. Ernie has returned to that secluded house where Kozar met the rich guys before. He picks a padlock and gets close enough to overhear her speaking with Owen. He says: “How much did they get?” She replies that it was everything. Higgins documented everything he did for them. “How did Vargas get it?” She replies that Mendoza probably found it. Owen: “Who would have guessed that an ordinary Mexican drug dealer would be more cunning than your own DEA agents?” [Owen, I suspect that your reckoning at the hands of the “ordinary Mexican drug dealer” isn’t that far off.]

Kozar, sounding desperate, assures him she did everything in her power. He says that Vargas could end them all. He sounds ready to throw her waaay under the bus. She tells him she has one more move in mind, but she needs his help in negotiating with Vargas. Ernie, still listening, says under his breath: “Perra!”

reina3

#51 – Parte 3 de 3

Faustino convinces Paloma and Batman that they have to get away. They need more ammunition and to get the money from his cousin in Bogotá. He tells them that the others will be all right. If they’d acted foolishly, they’d already have been found.

TeamA is moving rocks. Teresa complains that she has gotten dirt in the wound where Oleg insisted on taking out her tracker. She doesn’t think anyone is monitoring them now, but Oleg says they don’t want Vargas to know they’re alive when they do get out. He remembers that a big advantage they have is the money Epi left them. [Was it $5 million; I sort of remember that’s what Teresa asked for.] Meanwhile Pablo has found the drive that Teresa kept out of the briefcase. They don’t know if it will work after the explosion or not. [Of course it will work; this is a telenovela!]

Kozar is ready to return to D.C. from her home when Charlie approaches. She’s ready to blow him off when he says it’s important. She gives him 5 minutes. Of course, Ernie is still lurking and hears the conversation. Charlie sucks up and talks to her about loyalty. He says that Ernie has been investigating her and following her. He mentions a mansion in Bethesda. He paints himself as only following orders when they went there two weeks ago. He says he saw her meeting with important people. She cuts to the chase: “What do you want?” Charlie: “What someone in my position would want from someone in yours. Help. Or connections. You can count on me.” He says that he knows everything (about the stash of information and the Horsemen). She decides to have him come to D.C. and attend a meeting with her.

Charlie’s life expectancy continues to sink. He’s got Faustino AND Ernie wishing him dead.

Epi almost needs to check back into the medical facility when he finds out that Montaño couldn’t wipe out Teresa’s Colombian crew. Montaño says that “they” are unable to communicate because one of his guys found a cell. [Good thing Montaño doesn’t know that this is the phone with Teresa’s cell number on it.] Epi snarls at his henchie, telling him to find them and kill them!

Batman, Faustino and Paloma have reached a road. [I kept expecting an “It Happened One Night” moment with Paloma being the bait to get a car to stop, but that didn’t happen.] Faustino’s method of pleading for a car to stop doesn’t work. So Batman shows him how it’s done in his pueblo. He gets in the middle of the road and points his (empty) gun at the next car. He assures the guy that they only want a ride out of there, and off they go.

Bebita tells Susana that there’s no big deal about the kiss. Danilo shows them Epi’s speech about his good health.

When Epi gets back into the car, he thanks Lt. Romo for watching the briefcast. [I keep expecting Epi to get rid of this guy who knows too much, but maybe he’s waiting for Montaño, his pit bull, to get back in town.]

Faustino, Batman and Paloma arrive in Bogotá. Faustino talks the guy they basically carjacked into giving him a cell phone. And Batman, I think, hands over some money. Faustino teases Batman when he asks how they’ll get to the meet with the nun. He tells him they don’t have a Batmobile and will have to walk. He then calls Sr. Margarita and finds out Padre G is with them. [He’s not best pleased about this. And he’s right because it was the priest’s phone they hacked into.]

Somebody, not Charlie, is talking to the two guys who followed Sr. Margie and Padre G. He tells the two guys that the objective is Sanchez Godoy. I was wrong about Charlie taking "Telenovela Airlines" to Colombia. He's too busy feathering his nest.

reina3

what a delightful recap novelera !!!

full of details and snark.

I know Charlie wouldn't want to risk losing his "license to kill", but I wonder if he isn't still working with Ernie, did he keep saying loyalty? anyway, Ernie was a bit far away to hear his talk with the Ice Queen, but there was a flash to a phone in someone's pocket that Ernie might have been tuned into.

I also seem to remember when Charlie left Colombia he put the Interpol guy in charge of the investigation, who's interest was not with Tesa's gang but specifically in getting Faustino.

I thought for sure there would be another way out of "Higgins hideout", are they really going to dig their way out, did Oleg say it took 30 days to reach the miners?

interesting Mateo gets paired with Sheila and Sofia with Fedor, and always nice to watch Faustino's bond with his "sis", Paloma.

reina3

¡Muchísimas gracias! novelera, for this superb recap. You've captured everything, and with delightful humor. And I found the Spanish phrases you included very helpful.

Loved your statement about the actor who plays Montaño! Yes, I guess it's possible that he's really a lovely guy, but.... :-)

I found it hard to watch some of those shots of Our Team removing the trackers. Ow!

I too was struck by the number of men Montaño had at his disposal even after several of them were shot. Later, Montaño reported to Epifanio that he'd brought 15 men. That wasn't at all clear from the earlier scene where he was giving the "Enter. Kill. Exit" instructions.

Yes, I think it was $5 million that Epifanio promised Teresa (ironically, the same amount as the reward money for her capture, IIRC). In giving it to her, he told her to count it, and I was a little surprised that she didn't, given how untrustworthy he has often shown himself to be. Of course, as she says, she cares much less about the money than about her freedom.

Yup, Charlie has now made enemies of Ernie as well as Faustino. I'm hoping Faustino is the one to take him down. I wouldn't want Ernie to have the satisfaction. Indeed, I dislike Ernie as much as I dislike Charlie.

The scene with Bebita and Susana made me nervous. I kept fearing that they'd go beyond that quick kiss and someone--perhaps even Epifanio, back from his "health checkup"--would walk in on them.

One more thing. When Jane was playing one of the tapes on which Higgins was speaking, I realized that he sounded very much like Ernie (at least, to me). I'd been assuming that Ernie was on the tapes, but perhaps the voice was always that of Higgins. And was it ever clearly established that Higgins is dead? Could he still be alive? (And would that matter, with so few episodes remaining?)

Again, MANY THANKS, novelera!

reina3

Great recap as usual, novelera. Thanks. Always appreciate the Spanish you include. And your asides are on point. Lol, your comment on the actor who plays Montaño.

Enjoyed Faustino and Batman picking off the “mercs” one by one with their handguns. Who needs assault rifles?

Bonding time for Sofia and Fedor.

No big deal about that kiss, Bebita?

I did at first wonder if Charlie was working with Ernie again, but by gauging Ernie’s reaction to Charlie’s convo with Kozar it doesn’t seem so. Ernie must have paid that other agent to bug Charlie’s phone and that’s how he listened in.

I still have hope for Charlie to go back to Colombia so Faustino can get his revenge. Or maybe Faustino can get Charlie if he’s captured and brought to the US.

OT...hello. I miss you all and hope that we are watching something together soon.
Happy New Year .

reina3

Thanks, Novelera. Excellent recap. Super vocab. Primo snark. Awesome.

Enjoyed all the comments. Looks like the heat is on until the final.

Charlie, really? After Kozar threw Ernie under the bus you think you'll fare better with her?

Sofia can get injured, of course, like everybody else, but at the start she was a kickass kickboxer. I hope we get to see some more of that.

We don't see Anton again after TeamA bandaged him. Not a good sign.

OT

Hola, Susanlynn. Feliz Año Nuevo a ti también. I too hope we'll all be together again for another novela sometime soon.

reina3

Juanita I also expected Epi to walk in on Bebita and Susana actually having fun. But I never thought it would go farther, no matter how drunk Bebita got. However, this...to me...seemed like another good step by Telemundo in positive portrayals of LGBTQ people. Bebita was shocked, but she got over it. There was a nice scene earlier with Daniel and Susana discussing their "differences" from others in the Epi administration.

deb, always so nice to hear from you! I was also confused about the way out after the explosion. Epi kept mentioning "a tunnel" when he was talking with Lt. Ramos. I don't remember seeing one. But Teresa Mendoza isn't going to die from lack of oxygen this week, so there's that.

dondi Glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoys seeing mercs shot in the head. I sometimes wonder about my bloodthirstiness toward people chasing Teresa Mendoza and her family and friends. Good catch on where the $500 Ernie promised went; i.e., somehow his being able to tune into Charlie's phone and, I assume, record what he said.

Niecie Yep, Charlie is living in fantasy land if he thinks Kozar will treat him any better than she did Ernie. I know she wants to keep her dirty laundry away from the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, so Charlie better sleep with one eye open.

Since no one else has said they'd put anything up, I'll try to put together a short account later tonight.

reina3 Ep. #52 p. 1 of 2

The episode opens in Washington DC. Jane Kozar and Charlie have been given a link to use. They're not sure where it will take them, but they reluctantly click on it. They find themselves in a video session with Epifanio and Delio. Jane tells Charlie she wants to know what Epifanio has and what he wants. Charlie does the translating between Jane and Epi. Epifanio says he has many disks, and lots of information. Jane says "We will not interfere again with your affairs, and we will pay a large sum of money for the information you have." Epifanio says, "I see the disks not as merchandise but as an opportunity to be an ally to you, to your friends, and, of course, to Uriel. I'm not just offering my silence, I'm offering you the chance to own the world by my side." We see Ernie driving a car and listening to this discussion.

Anton asks Teresa for another painkiller. She gives it to him, telling him to relax. He's going to get better.

She then goes into the area where Oleg and Pablo are trying to remove rocks from an opening. Oleg asks how Anton is doing. Badly, replies Teresa. Oleg goes to see Anton. Pablo comments on how Teresa and Oleg don't even need to talk to understand each other. "Oleg will never leave you, nor you him."

The video session between Epifanio and Kozar continues. Epifanio tells her she has three days to decide. Epifanio also tells her that Teresa Mendoza is no longer a problem. "I took care of that," he says. "Is she dead?" Jane asks.
"Dead and buried," Epi replies. He tells her that the person in her office, who gave them information about the Horsemen was Jay Garcia. Epi asks her, "Who replaced my father-in-law and the Press Secretary?" Jane replies that our contact was General Garrido. Epi asks, "And who was helping him?" They tell him they have no informaion about that. Finally, Epifanio says, " Aguilar is no longer of any use to either of us, and he shouldn't go free." Jane assures him she'll take care of that.

Charlie asks Jane, "Do you want me to do something about Aguilar?" Jane replies, "Yes. He...and Palermo." She sees him hesitate and reminds him, "You said you were willing to do anything." "And I stand by my words," Charlie replies.

Fedor and Sofia are together in the Colombian woods. He is worried about their parents. Sofia wants all this to be over. "I wasn't born to be on the run." She tells Fedor she likes being able to talk with him, and he says he feels the same. "I really wanted to join you guys," he says. "Well, join you." Suddenly Teresa hears footsteps. She and Fedor look quite frightened. They're about to attack whoever is there, but it turns out to be Mateo and a very scared Sheila. They all happily embrace.

Sister Margarita and Padre G have arrived in Bogotá, but they don't see Faustino. The two guys who have been following them have arrived as well. Sister M and Padre G split up to see whether one of them can spot Faustino. The two men decide to follow Sister M. Sister M's eyes light up as she sees Faustino, Batman, and Paloma. The men following her see them, too. Sister M greets Faustino et al. The ever-watchful Faustino spots the two guys. He tells Sister M to go to the van and start it. Paloma goes with her. Faustino and Batman start to run. Somehow, everyone manages to get into the van with Sister M. She drives off. They're troubled by leaving Padre G behind. They feel that he's a smart guy, he'll know how to take care. Oops, not this time. The two men and their boss from Interpol find and arrest Padre G.

reina3 Ep. 52 p. 2 of 2

There's a very moving scene when Oleg comes into the room where Anton is. They talk about how much they mean to each other. Anton tells him how much it meant to him when Oleg avenged the deaths of Anton's people. Anton tells Oleg to stay with Teresa. Oleg tells him he needs him. Anton reminds Oleg, "When I thought I was going to die, I asked to hear a certain song." Oleg starts to sing it in Russian. He stops, but Anton asks him to keep singing. Teresa hears them. Finally, Oleg looks again at Anton and breaks down crying. He closes Anton's eyes and wraps his body in a blanket. He tells Teresa, "Now more than ever, I want to get out of here. This can't go unpunished." Oleg says he's starting to feel alone. Teresa replies, "You'll never be alone, Oleg."

At the Presidential Palace, Delio tells Epifanio that he thinks Epi is carrying things too far. "I don't think the gringos will give you everything you want," he tells Epifanio. He continues, "It's one thing to be their partner, but quite another to tell them which cartel they can work with." Epifanio also tells Delio that he's not going to give jobs to his friends. He thinks the rights to exclusivity should be auctioned off. [I think he's referring to the cartels.] He says, " If they want to work in peace and want to smuggle whatever they want to the United States, they'll have to pay more than the rest." This discussion is interrupted by a call from General Arismendi, returning Epifanio's call. Epi tells him he needs help with one of General Arismendi's comrades: General Garrido.

After the call ends, Epifanio tells Delio he needs to find out who is giving General Garrido information. Someone told him that we were meeting with Aguilar. What Epifanio and Delio don't realize is that Bebita happened to be at the door listening to their conversation.

Back in Colombia, Sofia's leg is getting worse. She says they can't take her to a hospital. "We'll be questioned, and we don't have documents." They've managed to get to a road. They see someone loading a van. They ask for him to give them a ride to Bogotá. He turns them down. Suddenly, Sofia collapses. The guy then offers to take her to a hospital. Mateo tells the guy that they're wanted by the police. They haven't done anything bad--it was self-defense. The guy then agrees to take them to Bogotá.

Bebita hurries to the bathroom and removes the phone from its hiding place. She calls General Garrido and tells him he's in danger. "Epifanio knows you're working with the DEA. General Arismendi is on his way to get you." We then see Arismendi accompanied by several soldiers. One of them asks the general what the charge against Garrido is. "Treason to the country," replies Arismendi.

General Garrido tells Bebita that her father was the only one on their side, and the two of them became good friends. As he's speaking, we see soldiers arrive and surround the house. Garrido tells Bebita, "Finish what we started. Vargas must go." He then tells Bebita something he hadn't told her before: "Montaño provoked the accident that killed your father." Arismendi tells Garrido to open the door. Garrido says goodbye to Bebita. We hear a shot. Arismendi opens the door and sees Garrido's body lying on the floor as the episode ends.

thanks so much Juanita!

this was such a moving episode as we break from the action, and you caught it all so well.

Anton was such a rock through all 3 seasons, never questioning, never complaining, always doing what needs to be done, the world always loses when a man like this passes on.

good catch Dondi on the $500 tip and Ernie's connection to Charlie's phone, interesting to watch how smart Ernie and smarter Charlie, or is it the other way around, find out who is smartest, hanging out with the ice Queen pretty much punches your ticket to hell.

or maybe Epi is the smartest of all, or maybe too smart wanting it all, will he wear a crown? I'm guessing he will be invincible, that is up until the time when Tesa walks in the door.

hmm, is Garrido's death going to be a problem, the plan was to just arrest him.

interesting to watch how Mateo and Fedor both excel in opposite ways, Fedor finding their way out of the woods, Mateos' street savy getting them a ride.

8 more shows ??

Excellent recap, Juanita. You got it all and with style!

My thinking is that this is the last season. I'm finding it hard to believe that there would be a 4th without Humberto Zurita aka Epifanio Vargas. And I'm really finding it hard to imagine that he survives all the things he's done.

Even if Teresa were willing to let him live, perhaps in prison, Oleg would not. And this is not to mention the insane plan to have the cartels bid for free access to the U.S. drug markets. I can't imagine how that would even work. I am reminded of one of the Colombian novelas in which a minister of justice was assassinated by Pablo Escobar. I don't think the cartels would turn a hair at the thought of bumping off Epi.

When Garrido killed himself, I was wondering if one of his reasons was thinking he might be tortured to reveal who his inside source was. And what he said about having lost his wife made his choice make some sense. Of course, children were not mentioned; that would be awful for them if there are some.

I am definitely interested in Ernie's next move. Will he be the one who takes out Charlie?

Still feeling like Mateo won't make it. He kept up with those dark looks every time Fedor opened his mouth. I've been thinking a bit lately about the importance of families. I am fortunate enough to have come from a loving one. People like Mateo have a problem with healthy ways of loving. His jealousy comes from his insecurity which comes from a traumatic childhood.

Thanks VERY much, deb and novelera, for your astute and supportive coments.

deb, I really enjoyed your "who's the smartest" discussion. If the question were simply "who has the biggest delusions of grandeur?" I think the answer would be easy: Epifanio. As for Garrido's death, I don't think it will be a problem in terms of procedure, since he killed himself. But in terms of why they might have wanted him alive, YUP! Big problem! And yes, I think that counting tonight's episode, there are 8 more.

novelera, I agree, I think Garrido killed himself at least in part to make sure that he wouldn't reveal Bebita's name (and perhaps Danilo's) under torture as those who helped him. As for Ernie, he certainly has the motivation to kill Charlie, but I'm still hoping that somehow Faustino will be the one to do it. And I agree with you about Mateo. You make an interesting remark about how his not having come from a loving family may have given rise to his feelings of insecurity and jealousy. Of course, I suspect that there are also lots of people who feel jealous and insecure in spite of coming from a loving family. Just a guess.

Super job, Juanita. Thanks a bunch.

In imploring the driver who first rejected them, Mateo gave up his and Sofia's name. To which, Fedor muttered, "stupid." Sofia would no doubt die without medical care pronto, but I'm wondering how they will leave a hospital without getting arrested.

Anton and Oleg - so sad. Anton has had few words, but his loyalty and respect for Oleg was always palpable. I had to look away when Oleg sang the Russian song Anton asked him to.

Awful to see Garrido go, but he had the final say.

One of my former Spanish teachers (male) was a native of Colombia, and he once gave my adult class a briefing on jealousy among Latin cultures, country by country, as opposed to jealousy among North American males. He was hilarious and Colombians were high on the ranking.

Thanks for treating us to another excellent recap, Juanita.

Just worry about getting out of there, Pablo. Maybe you can take Teresa to bed, but you’ll never have what she has with Oleg.

Pokoysya s mirom, Anton. I confess I was teary during that scene. The song that Anton requested from Oleg was “Polyushko-Polye”. YouTube with Russian and English lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wT2NYj9zfXM

QEPD, General Garrido. Another emotional scene. I believe Garrido killed himself 1- so he wouldn’t talk and 2- he wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of killing him. But I’m sure he will be painted as a traitor to Mexico.

Lol, deb, “hanging out with the ice Queen pretty much punches your ticket to hell.” So true.

novelera, why couldn’t Epi find a way to survive? Mala hierba nunca muere. Will everything be wrapped up in 8 episodes? They could be setting up a season 4. I just hope they don’t run the franchise into the ground.
