#3 – Parte 1 de 2
At their dinner together Camila tells César what Estela told her…that Mariana’s husband shot her.
Camila says that Mariana said that she lived in Miami. But when she came to L.A. she volunteered a lot at the foundation. We see a flashback of Adriana entertaining some kids. Camila says she had a real knack with children. [?] She also tells him that Mariana was an orphan who had been adopted by a wealthy family.
Noelia worries about the cell phone of her mother’s she found in the wardrobe.
Francisco and Yvonne continue to talk in the aisle of a store. He says he wants to find Adriana. He tells Yvonne he knew that she was named Adriana and was married. But she never said she had a child.
At that dinner with Camila, César volunteers to do carpentry, or whatever is needed, at the foundation.
Márquez, the female cop, comes to see Cesar’s mother. They urgently need to see her son about the bathing suit they found.
César sneaks into the hospital, pretends to be Estela’s brother, and comes into her room. She looks scared to see him.
Long flashback of when “Mariana” came to Casa del Rio. Before Camila comes out she says OMG about the luxury of the place. When Camila says they don’t need donors right now, Mariana insists she needs to do this volunteer work. Her soul cries out for it.
César tells Estela he was with Camila when they found her (after she had been shot). He says he heard that she (Estela) had said that Mariana’s husband shot her. Did you see the face? She keeps panicking and Viewerville wishes she’d say…something!!
Renata sees Adriana’s face on Camila’s laptop, reacts, but then pretends she doesn’t know who that is.
César grills Estela about why she said he was dangerous.
Francisco and Tomás bring the leather bound notebook he found under Adriana’s bed to the police. And Francisco admits to Barros that he was her lover. Barros treats him much better than he has César.
#3 – Parte 2 de 2
Estela dies in the hospital. [They definitely are making us wonder…since she was alive and with César the last time we saw her.]
Francisco and Tomás come to the strip club. Francisco says he met Adriana here as Diana de Nadie. We then see a flashback of Francisco smiling as he watches Mariana working with children on math concepts. He then followed her to the club. We see him in a room with a one-way glass. She can’t see him, but he can watch her pole dance and look seductive. Interestingly to me, she speaks with a strong Argentinian accent, even addressing him as vos and using voseo verbs.
César comes to the police station and can’t really identify the bikini top.
Camila sort of makes up with her father.
The two cops come to César’s house. Márquez shows Noelia a bathing suit on her phone. Noelia is completely upset by this whole thing. She is a smart little girl and believes that, if they found the bathing suit without her mother, she’s dead. César is furious with them, and Márquez has the grace to look ashamed and to apologize.
At JetAir, there’s a meeting with, I think, an investor. Afterwards Renata chews Francisco out for smelling like alcohol. Alejandra comes in. Francisco tells her in front of both his parents that they aren’t going to get married. He loves another woman.
Noelia gives the cell she found in the wardrobe to her father. Manuel, the carpentry assistant, gets into it.
Camila wants the keys to Estela’s apartment. She wants to see if there’s anything pointing to why she was shot.
César notices that the last person Adriana called was at 2AM the day she disappeared. He calls the number. It turns out she called Renata, who is upset she called there. “Do you want someone to find out? What do you want?” César says that he’s not Mariana, and who the hell is she?
Howdy from the Alamo City folks. I'll be doing a very short mini-recap of tonight's episode sometime later this evening.
Steve Boudreaux
thanks novelera, very nice of you to keep us plugging along as this mystery develops.
wow, Yvonne seems to be at the crossroads where she was aware of all the worlds of Adriana / Mariana.
so far Estella has only referred to Mariana as Mariana and must be referring to Mariana's husband. Cesar is just too intense, (but I suspect someone else followed him into see Estella). I would hate to run into Cesar in a dark alley.
Wednesday, Tomas tore a couple pages out of Mariana's notebook (and I'm finding it helpful to keep Mariana and Adriana separate) did these refer to him?
Adriana was such a dynamic person, no wonder Cesar is traumatized, he must have known what a ball of fire she was, like when she forked that singer.
Thanks VERY much, novelera, for this very helpful recap. The writers are doing a pretty good job of keeping us guessing.
So Renata del Rio is not just trying her best to get her son to marry Alejandra, she's also been in secret contact with "Mariana." I would have expected her to want nothing to do with "Mariana," especially not having her as her daughter-in-law. Which, of course, gives her a motive for doing away with Mariana. Along with almost everyone else in the novela! (Perhaps we should make a list of the characters who are NOT suspects. It would be a very short list.)
I continue to wonder why Noelia is so upset about her mother's disappearance. As you pointed out in your previous recap, novelera, we've never seen Adriana be especially affectionate toward her daughter. Indeed, she's deeply resentful that Noelia has replaced her (in Adriana's mind, at least) as The Most Important Person in César's life.
The writers and actors are doing a pretty good job of making it appear as if seemingly warm and likeable César is indeed responsible for Adriana's disappearance and possible death. There were the menacing, threatening looks he gave to Estela in the hospital. And even Noelia gets into the act when she asks César why he hid her mother's cellphone in his wardrobe. But then she clarifies that it was the wardrobe he and Adriana share.
So Tomás too is more involved than he seemed at first. Why did he take photos of some of the pages of the notebook/agenda in Francisco's car? And, especially, why did he tear some pages out? I like deb's suggestion that perhaps the pages he tore out contained references to him.
I also am assuming, like deb, that someone else visited Estela after César left (though given the menacing looks on César's face when he was talking to Estela, I almost wonder whether he scared her to death! :-) )
Thanks for pointing out that "Mariana" speaks with a strong Argentinian accent and uses "vos." I wonder how/whether that will work into the plot.
Again, MANY thanks for doing a second recap to keep the discussion going. I hope that other people will join you in recapping this interesting novela.
Thanks a lot, novelera.
I agree with deb and Juanita that the pages Tomás tore must have been referring to him.
I agree with Juanita about Renata.
I also don't really think César killed Adriana/Mariana, but I'm starting to think why so many clues that he did it? Just to have us guessing? Maybe. Again, I don't really think he killed her.
Again, thanks novelera. I'll be having some rough weeks and I won't be able to help with the recaps for now.
Good morning Patio friends. I am working on a mini recap for epi #4. It will be up later this morning. Thank you novelera for the recaps so far and to deb for the highlights of epi #2
Episode 4 part 1
Camila and Ines talk at the funeral service for Estella. Camila wants the keys to Estella’s apartment before her parents go over there. She tells Ines what Estella said at the hospital about Mariana’s husband shooting her. Ines correctly jumps to the conclusion that Cesar could be Mariana’s husband and she saw him waiting at the Foundation. Camila dismisses that theory quickly saying Cesar is a nice guy who would never do something like that, plus Mariana was not married. They both decide to head over to Estella’s apartment.
Cesar and Renata demand to know why they are talking to each other. Cesar tells her Mariana called her at 2 am and they talked for 7 minutes, he also tells Renata he is Adriana/Mariana’s husband. Renata disconnects the call. Husband? She says to herself.
Cesar’s assistant scolds him for burning through some of the leads and cannot believe Adriana was living a double life. Cesar says he wishes it was just a double life but she also lived as Diane de Nadie at the club. Just then his cell rings and his mother tells him that Noelia is getting dressed up because she thinks her mother is coming home.
The gum-chewing police chief and Detective Marquez are reviewing Mariana’s calendar agenda. She drove three times a week to LA and had the initials FJ (Francisco Javier) in many spots on the calendar. Several of these entries were followed by XXX. Marquez ponders what that could mean, while the gum chewer demands she get a warrant in interrogate Noelia. He is also convinced that Cesar killed his wife and tossed her into the ocean to make it look like she drowned.
At the JetAir offices, Renata has summoned the office secretary, Eva, who is having the affair with Pasqual. She belittles her and tells her never to cross the boundaries of her home with Pasqual. She will not allow her to destroy her family. Lovers come and go, she says, but a wife is forever. She dismisses Eva but then calls her back and asks if she has heard anything from Mariana? No, she says, I have not.
FJ tells his Senate candidate fiancé that he just cannot get Adriana out of his heart and mind. She tells him and then Pasqual on the way out, that they will regret messing with her.
At Estella’s apartment, Camila and Ines find a box of photos with Estella and Mariana in almost every picture. Camila opines that they looked very comfortable together and perhaps the husband got jealous. Ines is also in several of the photos and looks uncomfortable with the conversation saying that Mariana was a “very friendly” person. Hmmmm…
Cesar arrives at his house and tries to tell Noelia that her mother many not come home today. His mother tells him he needs to start facing the truth and not give the girl hope that her mother will return. Cesar listens to some of the voice texts between FJ and Mariana. One of the messages says that Mariana is scared. He cries in his mother’s arms. At the same time, FJ calls Mariana’s phone and leaves her a message that he is worried about her. Cesar gets angry seeing the call come in. He will not answer and give FJ a heads up that he is on to him.
The bikini DNA has come back from the lab. The blood does belong to Adriana. For whatever reason the gum chewer calls FJ first to let him know.
There is a strange interaction between Rocio (the pole dancer) and Cesar. In the end she promises to help him find Adriana and thinks the bar owner, Pluto, is involved. At the same time, FJ’s brother is in the bar in a private room asking questions about Mariana. (Mariana really got around).
Episode #4 part 2
FJ is at the police station he cannot believe that Mariana/Adriana is dead. He shares the voice messages from her saying she was scared of her husband if he found out about them. Immediately, the police chief Barros (the gum chewer) says it was Cesar who killed her and he demands that Marquez put out a warrant for his arrest. She says that one voice message is not enough to arrest someone. FJ says if the police don’t do something immediately, he will take matters into his own hands. Sure enough, he ends up with a gun in hand at Cesar’s house pretending to be a friend. Luckily, Cesar’s mother is smart enough not let him in. FJ vows to himself to wait outside until Cesar returns.
Renata is scolding the very handsome gardener, Chuy, for not cleaning up the mess the carpenter left in the back yard. Camila overhears the discussion and says she has the perfect person to finish the job. She calls Cesar and asks him to come over to her house. He is more than pleased to do so.
At the Foundation, Ines is looking at Mariana’s “LikeBook” and pondering where she could be with a coworker. In walks FJ and Camilla’s brother, Tomas (straight from the strip club). Tomas does not recognize Ines, even though she has been working there for two years. She says not to worry, even as a kid, she was an invisible person (hmmm, a clue perhaps). Tomas wants to get a document from Camilla’s office. He ends up taking Mariana’s personnel file out of Camilla’s desk drawer.
Cesar is escorted into the Del Rio mansion and greeted by Camilla. She introduces him to her parents as the perfect person to finish the pergola outside in the patio. By the look on his face, I don’t think this was exactly what Cesar had in mind when he accepted the invitation. Renata and Pasqual are equally unimpressed by him and the way Camilla is gushing over him.
Noelia is sending an email or message to her mother asking her to please come back home. She misses her. She sees a shadow pass her window and thinks immediately it is her mother. She sneaks out of house and finds FJ waiting in the park across the street. She recognizes him as the man under her bed the night before. You?? She says. FJ looks around nervously.
This is how the episode ends.
Thank you, VVS for the amazing recap!
The perfect plot twist would be that the gum-chewing cop killed Adriana/Mariana, lol. I'm honestly unnerved by his behavior. Why is he so convinced that César's the killer? Surely there are OTHER suspects except him? Like, I don't know, FJ for example?
He also wants to interrogate Noelia? Great, let's traumatise the girl, because she's not already traumatised enough.
What was that scene with Camila and Inés? Why did she seem so uncomfortable about Mariana/Adriana being very "friendly"? I guess that will be a hint later on... I'm even starting to suspect her at this point...
So many questions, so little answers...
what a pleasant surprise, and a wonderful recap VVS !!!
yes, the gumchew detective, this should have been a comedy or maybe it is. I can picture intense Cesar and his loving fork slashing wife going to a Halloween party, they wouldn't even need costumes.
are those chiclets he's chewing, except he made a bubble once, which are a bit of a mystery in themselves as they went away but then came back, but are they still chiclets?
no sooner have i decided to separate Adriana and Mariana when Ines and Camila start talking about Adriana and her husband, maybe it was a typo because I didn't know either knew her by that name.
which brings us back to all the people who think Cesar killed his wife, is there even a shred of evidence that Adirana is dead, and the voicemail from Mariana in fear for her life because of her husband, which husband or is this part of the Mariana game, I thought FJ didn't know about Cesar until Pluto flashed a copy of his license, how quickly FJ jumped to a conclusion, Mariana must have him traumatized as well.
one look at Rocio (Aylín Mújica) and I think queen of darkness, does Cesar even want to enter that dark cloud that she packs around?
is Tomas old enough to be in a strip club, he certainly isn't tall enough.
is Chuy boinking everyone?
will FJ formally introduce himself to Noelia?
does Cesar even know how to build a gazebo?
yes, so many questions.
I managed to watch the episodes (or half watch them, as I was doing stuff around the house, too), then Novelera and VVS's recaps helped me figure out some of the things I missed. Thank you for starting the conversation, I also have a few thoughts...
Why is everyone who finds out about a crime being commited deciding that they should investigate on their own? Cesar does it, FJ does it, even Camila, who barely has a clue about anything that is happening around her, has decided to investigate.
Which brings me to my next thought: I've never seen a more incompetent cop than what's his name. He treated Cesar like dirt from the first second he reported Adriana was missing. Sure, the husband is usually the main suspect in this type of cases, but the man is actually finding the lover more trustworthy than the husband?
Adriana was an unhappy woman, jealous of her daughter and bored with her mediocre life, but Mariana is a kids loving charitable soul who has a hot love affair with a rich dude and a very interesting side hustle, pole dancing (!!), and keeping a journal and a flashy "Livebook" account and ... what am I missing? Oh, yes, she's kind of in contact with her lover's momma and there is also something going on with his baby brother... Would it be a stretch to suggest that she was also sleeping with daddy "open marriage" del Rio?
Anyway, the novela is sure to take a lot of turns, like this type of story usually does. I do like the cast, all except for "Cesar", he's too dark, I don't find him all that hot or desirable, knowing all we know about him. Nevermind the "maybe he killed his wife" angle, but if he hasn't and she's alive, then he's very married; and if she turns up dead somewhere, his life will never be the same again.
OK, rant over. I will try to stay up to date with the story, as it's not half bad, and I hope I can watch the episodes in a timely manner, to be able to contribute to the conversation.
Now that Cesar has managed to infiltrate the mansion, will he manage to keep his true identity hidden? Sure, Camila rejected the ideea that he could be "Mariana"s husband, but what will he do when he comes face to face with FJ.
I wish they would keep Noelia out of the equation, she seems to be pretty involved in everything that is going on... if Cesar was not home when Adriana left, did the girl actually see something that she doesn't remember or doesn't want to share?
Thanks VERY much, VVS, for this excellent recap! You've covered everything important clearly and concisely.
I wish I had more to add, but mostly what I have are more questions. Yes, Francisco is rich and good looking, but I'm surprised that Alejandra actually pleads with him to change his mind. Or else! She's attractive and powerful. Has she really so little self-confidence/self-esteem?
The stupid cop is driving me nuts. How has he managed to keep his job? I'm glad Marquez manages to thwart some of his orders. (Actually, I loved Weirdo's opening comment about the "perfect plot twist" being that the gum-chewer killed Adriana.)
The discussion between Camila and Inez about Mariana and Estela looking very comfortable together made me wonder whether they (M and E) will turn out to have been lovers. I rather doubt it, though. These days, a lesbian relationship hardly seems to be a sufficient basis for such a complicated plot.
I was stunned when the redhead (Rocio?) gets into her car and up pops César from the back seat. Jeez, don't people lock their cars?? And why does Rocio offer to help César?
You may be right that Inez's claim that she was invisible even as a child may ultimately prove to be a clue. I took it as simply a statement of how lower-class people are often not "seen" by people better off, especially the wealthy. (I remember years ago reading a couple of books where the detective was a Black cleaning woman who was able to find out all kinds of things because her race and class made her "invisible.")
As soon as Noelia snuck out while her grandmother was on the phone, I was worried that Francisco would see her and perhaps kidnap her. So far, half of my fear has come true. Guess we'll have to wait until Monday to see about the rest.
Again, MANY MANY thanks, VVS, for this wonderful recap!
Thank you Novelera and VVS for your recaps. I wanted to check this one out even though another novela is the last thing I have time for right now, lol.
They definitely built the suspense in this first week and made everyone look potentially guilty while no one looks absolutely guilty. I'm still not even sure a crime has been committed unlike the gum chewing detective....I'm unclear of which 1/2 of the bikini was found but I have a hard time understanding how blood on a bikini would be proof positive of much of anything much less murder! And how much blood is it? It couldn't be much. Heck, Adriana could have gotten a splinter and ended up with blood on her bikini, although with other perfectly natural mother nature inducing explanations for how that could easily happen if it's the bottom half of the bikini. It's a very odd 'proof' to build a case around.
It seems like every option is available right now. I agree that Ines was acting cagey about those photographs...it seems like a lot of these characters know something and have something to hide but those secrets aren't necessarily directly related to Mariana's disappearance. For the moment, I think that Mariana is still alive and not dead at all and I like the writing in this so far.
On a different note, I could kind of relate to Ines's comments about people not remembering meeting her. I never felt invisible or anything like that but I tend to be a very quiet and reserved person, especially with strangers and I have a lot of very outgoing friends, I have had many many experiences with 'meeting' people who I have met several times who have no memory of having met me before. I actually have a good friend now who introduced himself to me the first half a dozen or so times we met, the first few he genuinely didn't remember me and the others he was just being a jackass, lol It's interesting to see that scenario onscreen.
Welcome, Adrianna Noel. I had a couple of thoughts about what you said. Yes, the gum-chewing cop is totally incompetent. In an earlier episode, he may have provided an explanation for why he has refused to consider any suspect other than César. Gum Chewer was talking to Marquez about how boring his job is, how nothing ever happens in San Clemente, and then suddenly there's a murder and everyone is interested. I think he's hoping that he'll become famous for solving the case quickly, and so part of the reason he's sticking with César as his only suspect is that 1) the husband often is the killer, and 2) a quick resolution of the case will do wonders for Gum Chewer's reputation and prospects. (Of course, an even more important reason is that Gum Chewer has neither a brain nor an ethical sense.
You said that if Adriana turns out to be dead, César's life will never be the same again. Do you mean he'll be perpetually devastated, or that he'll be a lot happier? My feeling is definitely the latter. He and Camila seem to be mutually attracted to each other, and both of them seem like loving, decent people. If Adriana turns up dead, my guess is that he and Camila can be together in a much better relationship than he had with Adriana/Mariana/---iana. (Until the events of the coming weeks prove me wrong. As they so often do. :-) )
Wow! It is great to see so many comments! Thank you Weirdo, deb, Adriana Noel, Juanita and Darcy Buchanan for all the great observations, questions and theories. This one is definitely a head scratcher! I really don’t have any answers to the many questions, but glad the recap was helpful to get the conversation going. This one looks like fun!
Thanks so much for the fabulous recap, VVS. I had been missing your style and snark!
So...let's see. Was it Colonel Mustard in the Library with a Candlestick? I come from a family that really liked playing board games AND poker for pennies. They are definitely throwing around hints of at least 4 or 5 potential murderers. But, like the rest of you, I think Adriana is still alive. I'm sure we'll get the answers to those personality changes happening with each of her three lives. I'm still like a dog with a bone about that Argentinian accent for Diana de Nadie. [Thanks, writers, for coming up with such a good nickname for a stripper/pole dancer!]
When I saw that scene on the beach, I thought it was the top half of a bikini. But, yes, Darcy, unless the thing was soaked with blood, there could be a lot of reasons for blood on it. I wasn't wearing a bikini at the time, but I have been known to be careless chopping celery.
Thanks, Juanita, for bringing up the scene where the despicable Barros is saying to Márquez that, wink-wink, nod-nod, nothing ever happens around here. But this case would be sooo good for his career. I also think a reason he's so intent on César being the killer and not Francisco, richie-rich, could be his sucking up to the rich. He wants Márquez to get some sort of court order to interrogate a child without her father being present. Yikes.
They did the stereotypical thing in the first episode. The second César and Camila met they both had that Wow! look on their faces.
I'm pretty sure we can safely say that Francisco is NOT going to shoot César dead on Monday.
Novelera, I thought it was the top half of the bikini, too. Was it red (it was in my memory, but I'm not entirely sure.
Juanita, what I meant to say when I mentioned Cesar never being the same again was the fact that while being a widower with a young child is very hard, having your wife die in strange circumstances is even harder, it leaves a ditinct mark. Even if Adriana were to return I don't see them going back to what they used to have, so his and Noelia's lives are definitely changed forever. I agree that being with Camila will be an upgrade, I'm sure she will fall in love with Noelia as soon as she meets her. And this being a novela Cesar will probably be more than cured if his Adriana love sooner rather than later.
I 100% agree about Alejandra practically begging Francisco to set a date. Is this supposed to mean that even independent, career women, only dream about being Mrs. somebody? Fran is hot, but no man deserves that much attention.
The detail of Adriana's argentinian accent is interesting. The woman is quite a chameleon, that much we can say.

I just saw this: "Is this supposed to mean that even independent, career women, only dream about being Mrs. somebody? Fran is hot, but no man deserves that much attention."
SO TRUE, Adriana. Telenovelas have been known to have misogynistic scenes, nowadays the situation is improving. But this one, honestly. Ugh. Cringe. Wrong message, too. "You might be a successful woman, but you're nobody if you're not married", come on now, we're in the 21st century! But most people's minds are back in the 11th, to be honest. If I had a penny for every time I met an inside of the box individual, I'd be a millionaire... Just saying.
VVS, thank you for a great recap.
The actor playing Cesar played a very bad guy in "Mujer de Nadie" on Univision , so I am having a bit of a problem seeing him as a galan.
Caray's Dr. Carlos was a big fan of the leading lady .
I watched the first 3 episodes . I am going to try to watch this show. There are several familiar faces , and I am a fan of Ed Yanez, who plays a cad in this one. ..the evil , rich, unscrupulous bad guy . I guess his galan days are over. Que lastima. Cinthia is his evil match . They are the perfect , nasty , entitled power couple .
In the first episode, Adriana clearly shows us that she is not a nice person and is unhappy with her life with her devoted husband and loving daughter .
Wow....the three lives of Adriana....Mariana. ....Diana . She kept both her husband and lover in the dark. I guess people sometimes lead double (triple?) Lives.
