El amor no tiene receta, #12, The apology that turned into a barrio sitcom

Paz arrives home with Sam and Cobija. She tells her family she will take care of the child and treat her like a daughter.

While Ginebra is tending to Mauro’s wound, he assures her that he left no traces behind, the other kids had no clue about Samara. She’s happy the child is dead. Mauro remembers how she was always cold, even as a child, but it hurts him that he killed Gorilla, he will always carry this on his conscience. Ginebra reminds him where they come from and how they used to be called in the orphanage. Mauro was 2512, because he arrived one Christmas day and she was 0708 (so she was abandoned on August 7th, this could become important later). They were both mere numbers, but they managed to have names. He did what he had to do to survive. And they will move forward no matter what. Mauro asks if there will ever come a day when they stop hurting people and just be happy?

Lupita and Mireya don’t think Paz should keep Samara, but she promised to protect her. Lupita understands, but she could go to jail, this child is not her daughter, she is stealing her from her real mother, who is looking for her.

Paz explains her uncle wanted to kill her; he could still do it if she ever got back home. Luna doesn’t remember her name, but someone evil locked her up in a box and threw her away. Mireya thinks she should tell Ginebra, who is hurting. But Paz wants to make sure Ginebra is good, and she doesn’t want to go to the police either, because she still thinks she’s seen cops earlier and thinks they are in cahoots with Luna’s uncle. Her heart tells her she needs to defend Luna; and she needs their help. Lupita warns her that she is involving the entire family in this, and she could have problems with the law. Paz hears them, but doesn’t care, she will listen to her heart, be a mom to this little girl.

Samara is snacking and chatting with Sal and Nandy. They are both waiting for Pepa to get out of the bathroom, but someone should maybe think about washing Sam first.

Ginebra has her next step of the plan ready: tank Elvira’s company and then buy it for parts. OK, Mauro says, but he needs to talk about their absurd situation first.

Nandy finished using the bathroom, just as Paz and Sam arrive. Paz prepares a bubble bath, and the poor girl finally gets to have a good wash.

Sam tells Paz that she wishes to find her mom and make sure she never abandoned her. Paz starts telling Sam a story about a mom who lost her daughter but never lost hope that she’d find her. Sam wishes Paz was her mom and Paz agrees to be one for her the time it takes to find her real mother.

Esteban and the kids arrive in the barrio. Eder and Gala love the murals, Bosco acts like a prick. Gala likes the barrio, Esteban says he will bring them over more often, the company is not very far away either. Like he’s told them before, he used to be poor, his father was a campesino, he’d like for them to feel connected to simple people. Gala asks if he talked to his dad recently, and Esteban says that no, not yet, but one of them will have to take the first step eventually.

Ginebra and Mauro go into a secret, vault-like room, where they have huge stacks of cash. Mauro wonders what’s the point to having all this money if they can’t take advantage of it. Ginebra reminds Mauro that Elias was not the first husband she killed, before him there was Federico, a lot of this money belonged to him.

Flashback to the forest and Ginebra saying a few last words to her dying husband. Back to the present, Ginebra says they can’t deposit this money, that’s why they always need a new victim. Mauro is aware of this, but hasn’t she ever thought about falling in love, having a family?

Ginebra is like “God forbid, people in love lose their heads, are easily manipulated.”

Sam doesn’t want to leave the bathtub, because she’s been dirty for so long. She’d like to wash Cobija, too, and Monito… Where could he be? What if he’s cold? Paz promises to ask her support group about Monito, maybe someone recognizes him.

Samara gets out of the water, Paz was afraid she wasn’t going to do a good job, since this is the first time she bathes a little girl. She notices Sam’s hair and decides to fix it a bit. She cuts it some more and gives it a shape.

There is a knock at the door, Esteban and his kids are here!

Panic all around, as Eder starts playing with Cobija.

Paz and Sam are still in the bathroom, Paz tells the child to stay hidden, nobody can see her for now, her life is still in danger. Sam gets scared, Paz will ask someone to come help her get dressed. They will later go buy her some new clothes, too.

Paz comes to the living room to greet Esteban and his family, telling her mother that she can go use the bathroom now.

Esteban would like to know why Paz left her work without asking permission. Bosco says Pepa was found in the kitchen and adds that he was also in the study. Paz and Mireya defend Pepa, who speaks up, telling everyone how Bosco threated him with that sword (good boy!)

Esteban is shocked, he didn’t see anything on the cameras. Bosco says he was joking, but Esteban is over this attitude, he forbids Bosco from participating in his competition later on and asks him to apologize. Bosco does it half-heartedly.

Paz admits part of the blame, since the food was her responsibility, but some guest could have spiked the wine.

Bosco wants to use the bathroom, the women scream NO, because Sam is still in there. They say Lupita is using it, they suggest the bathroom in the restaurant, then another one they have on the roof… Bosco says he’d rather wait until he gets home.

Then he attacks Pepa again, Salomon defends his brother, saying he is to blame.

Esteban says that can’t be, he had the food analyzed, why is he taking the blame for something so serious that could hurt not only him, but also his family? Mireya and Paz are sure he’s innocent, Sal just wants to protect his brother.

Gala says it was her, she did it because yaya is treating Paz badly. Then Nandy says it was her, too, then Eder says the same.

Paz puts a stop to the madness, Esteban only wants the truth, he feels like Gala is mocking him by saying she’s guilty. Paz asks why she is defending Sal and Gala says he’s her novio.

Esteban is surprised, he knows Gala and she never mentioned anything about him before. Sal’s family is surprised, also, but the teens both insist it’s true. Sal even makes a declaration; but Esteban is still reluctant to believe any of this.

Lupita is taking care of Samara, promises to buy her some more clothes later. Sam thinks Lupita could be her grandma, and Lupita likes the idea, but Sam must remember she has a family and sooner or later she’ll have to go back to them. Sam understands this, but they will take care of her while she’s in danger.

When Sam is clean, Lupita starts singing for her.

Nandy takes Bosco to a bathroom on the roof and jokingly asks him for money, before allowing him to go inside.

Ginebra, all dressed in red, in front of a green screen, is preparing a new video.

“I don’t know where to begin. I met Esteban years ago and I thought we were in love.”

Sam screams from the bathroom, Paz says she will go check, it should be her mom. She runs inside, Sam was screaming because Lupita was cutting her nails. And she’s very hungry.  Paz promises to give her something to eat soon.

Elvira tells Fogo that she’s been looking for her daughter for years. At one point she managed to track down an orphanage that her father had visited, but the place had burned down and there were no records left. If Ginebra was her daughter, it would be a miracle. Fogo says he can go ahead with the DNA test.

Back in the living room there is some more talk about the two novios, Gala says Sal used to follow her online, so they already knew each other from before.

Paz takes Esteban away before he gets mad with something Sal says about Gala.

They talk in private about the fact they don’t believe this relationship to be real. He apologizes for his behavior the other day; he also needs to show his kids that conflicts can be solved by talking. Also, he can’t stop but worry about her.

They are on the roof, he gets a bit close, she gets restless, he’d like to know her better and her barrio, too. Paz apologizes for leaving so suddenly, she had to take care of an urgent matter.

Forget that I’m your boss, what happened? Esteban asks.

Paz remembers the night before and tells Esteban she got news about a little girl that could have been her daughter, but it turned out she wasn’t. She starts crying and Esteban hugs her. These two hug so well, I wonder how they kiss.

Sam wants to leave the bathroom, she’s sick of it. Mireya brings her a smoothie to drink.

Gala and Sal talk about their lies and how they must convince everyone they are involved. He starts hugging her, she pushes him away and here comes Kenzo with flowers for Nandy. As if the place wasn’t crowded enough.

Nandy almost cries as Bosco looks at them in shock. Kenzo explains this is a thank you bouquet, Nandy thinks he should have this kind of gestures with his sons, too.

Esteban promises one day Paz will find her daughter. And here comes another hug, but Vermin shows up to ruin the moment. Paz signals at him to please keep quiet. Vermin notices Esteban is spending a lot of time with the poor folk, wants to talk to Paz in private. Paz says he’ll have to wait, she still has to talk to her boss. Vermin implies that something more must be going on, points out that affairs between bosses and their workers always end badly.

Thanks for the nuances I missed. Only some things I think I heard, Ginebra said it was a shame to her husband as he was guapo....and the stash of money can't be deposited it used as it is marked? Did I get that right? It definitely was a farce as everyone claimed they were the ones that spiked the food. And they still refuse to think it is the wine!

Gracias, Adriana.

We all must be thinking the same thing about who burned down the orphanage and why. Ginebra and Mauro must have very long rap sheets to have that pile of cash. Why don't they put it in an off-shore account? It now looks like too much to even get away with that.

The first step of their Karmageddons should be a fire that consumes it all.

It should be no surprise that Ginebra is not interested in love. She may be justified in thinking it doesn't exist but that does not justify her murders.

Vermin needs to tell Paz the truth. If he doesn't he will turn completely evil because Samara's life would be in even greater danger, possibly because of him. He might try to blackmail Paz into marrying him again.

The truth? Paz should just take her and disappear.

To be referred to by a number puts that orphanage on the same level as Nazi concentration camps, prisons almost anywhere, and most Magdalene asylums. I also suspect that Ginebra -- possibly Mauro as well -- had been sexually abused beginning at an early age. That she was able to get pregnant at all could be a miracle. However the baby she birthed would have been no better off than Samara has been.

One more thing: Since none of the food was contaminated and we know it was the wine, Paz should tread very carefully around Mauro and Ginebra as they would need to be the prime suspects. There was talk in an earlier episode of a business deal gone wrong between Ginebra's husband's company and Elvira's, but we have no details about that.

Adriana: AWESOME job on the recap of last night's episode.

UA: Burning down the orphanage ? What in the absolute EXPLETIVE ? Those Karma anvils cannot come soon enough!

We don't know how many episodes this has and Mexico is only 5 episodes ahead of us so no reliable ratings trend yet. The pace of the action is such that it would surprise me if this is longer than 65 episodes.

A few episodes ago there was a reference to Ginebra being 37 years old (AJ's real age) so she could have spent most of the last 20 years becoming the Queen Black Widow of novelas. I can see this only being successful if she kept on changing her name each time.

As for the possible importance of the dates they arrived in the orphanage, Elvira would certainly remember the date Ginebra was born and there must be some irony about the Christmas Day that Mauro ended up in the orphanage.

Adriana,

Your recap was sensational; you relayed every emotion and reaction with thoughtful sensitivity.

Yet, you never wavered from the cold, unvarnished truth including “Eder and Gala love the murals, Bosco acts like a prick”. Perfect.

Is there anything more dehumanizing than giving someone a number rather than a name? I shudder to think of what Ginebra and Mauro endured. They survived but, (Ginebra in particular) lost every shred of humanity in the process.

Being present at that if not for a miracle near slaughter of innocents, Paz knows Luna must remain a secret. The thought she would be returned to Ginebra makes me shudder. I think a lot will depend on what Vermin does. Hopefully he will not sell his child out. Again.

As horrible as Elvira is, the cold hard truth is that her father is responsible for taking her child from her. She did not abandon her. I’ve no doubt that child is Ginebra.

Diana

cher Adriana, merci for bringing us every detail .

All those people standing around in that tiny room was odd. Bosco being in distress because he had to use the occupied bathroom ...was that supposed to be comic relief?

I love Eder and loved the way his kind nature made him instantly connect with Dograbbit.

Paz lovingly washing Sam\Luna\Maria touched my heart. ...the shampoo, cutting the scraggly locks that were so violently sheared off. Claudia just radiates goodness and gentleness . It looked like Claudia was really cutting her hair !

Lupita singing to the little girl reminded me of my own grandma ....who only knew one song, but I asked her to sing it over and over . Lupita and Luna have already bonded.

The tiny actress is doing an amazing job. Loved Mir bringing a smoothie to her as she was hidden in the bathroom. This family will make up for all the brutality and cruelty this child has endured.

So, it seems that Esteban and his father haven't seen each other lately ...why?

Regarding what Gin and Mauro endured, sometimes you survive....but you dont really survive .

The best moment was Esteban and Paz on the balcony . Daniel is the best hugger in the biz. His hugs always seem real.

Susan

Thanks, Adriana.
This episode was a bit frustrating for me because there were some things I didn't catch. Did Ginevra get someanimal to bite Federico? She mentioned the path they were on had a lot of venomous animals.
Sal should really think before he talks. When everyone was having a go at him in the last episode, I started wondering what they'd do if he really got into serious trouble. His mother might not even have apologised if he hadn't pointed out he was hurt by what she said. And then she gets mad at him for being impulsive...
Fermin and his delusions are hard to watch. How do people reach this point where everyone except them can see it's over?

Great job, Adriana! I loved your reference to "selling the company for parts" -- perfect description. And you even managed to untangle that whole mass-confession-while-waiting-for-the-bathroom melee. I gave up about halfway through and just started watching everyone's facial expressions, which were priceless.

Kat, the evil twins said something about the money needing to be laundered, but I don't think they said why exactly. Gin said "that's why we keep needing a new victim," so I guess she was laundering it through Elias's company...?

When she was in the forest with her expiring guapo, she said something about it being a shame that nature is full of poisonous animals, but it wasn't clear whether she was talking about an actual animal or herself.

UA, good point about changing identities. With all that cash, they could probably do that easily. But now that Gin's been all over the tv, it will be a lot harder. And I LOVE the idea of all of it being lost in a fire. From your lips to the writers' little monkey ears.

It was so funny how Sam never wanted to leave the bathroom and then was desperate to get out of the bathroom. I guess this was the "bathroom humor" episode. She made a remark about Gorila saying, "Less hair, less fleas" which I guess was one motivation (shudder) for the hack job.

I think they're setting Mauro up for redemption at some point. He feels bad about Gorila -- I think he feels worse than we do, actually -- and none of his infanticide orders were successful, so he has a chance, especially if he eventually sabotages Ginebra. I picture him serving a long jail term, while Mireya visits with sandwiches.

I have been wondering about Mauro from the beginning. I don't think this actor has a long resume for Mexian TV but he is attractive; I think he looks French but I know he is Chilean and Brazilian.

We all know that villains typically turn on each other in the last five episodes so this one will be interesting. There is definitely sexual tension between them so I have been wondering how many dead husband's are in the almost 20-year history since the arson on the orphanage.

Perfect title, Adriana! The “Only ONE bathroom scenario”, that so many of us can relate to, worked so well. Then there was the whole noviazgo silliness. I thoroughly enjoyed the comedic relief.

The “all for one, one for all “ assumption of guilt was marvy since Esteban was slow to reveal why he had come which was annoying. I am not liking this character like I think I should. He is too hard to read.

This was a nice break from the previous intense drama. Looking forward to tonight.

Also, thank you, Adriana!

Thank you, Adriana! Excellent recap as always amiga!

I love how the how both Salo and Pepe were immediately all friendly and kind to Luna, I can't imagine how mean Boscoe would have been to the little street urchin suddenly living in his home! The urgently waiting for the bathroom thing was a little funny, but if there's another bathroom in the restaurant and on the roof you gotta wonder why Salo and Nandy were waiting desperately outside the bathroom while Pepe showered instead of going to the roof or restaurant? LOL

I agree the little actress is adorable, and even more so now that she's clean!

I don't know about redeeming Mauro, he can express as much regret as he wants the day after, he still looked pretty cold and comfortable leading a whole troop into battle with the intention of killing a whole slew of innocent children. I don't feel inclined to give him a pass or a shot at redemption just because he proved inept at the task. No telling what horrors he's lived through, and Gin is pulling the strings, but he still looks like an accomplished killer to me. I don't gorilla was the first kill or that the failed child raid was the first killing he's committed or ordered. I'd say he's headed for anvil town.

It was cool to see Esteban and kids enjoying the barrio, but who brings their three kids with them to confront an errant employee in her home? It made for a cute group 'I did it' scene, but it's just weird.

The looks on Daniel's face why the family was trying to cover for why Lupita was singing in the bathroom were hilarious!!!

If Gin has been amassing a hidden fortune, it is odd to me that she would go through all the trouble of getting pregnant, stealing Samera and playing (not so) happy family for 7+ years?? It seems like a lot to go through when she didn't NEED his money.... she wanted his money, but he's not the only rich guy in the world and she's a very attractive woman. Wouldn't she have cut bait and found another less complicated rich guy to trick and kill?? Also, I might have misunderstood but I don't think the money is marked in any way. Gin just said they can't deposit it into their accounts because it would look suspicious if large sums of money suddenly appeared out of nowhere. It sounds like she's trying to avoid looking guilty in the event that the police ever look into the deaths of her unfortunate husbands.

Ginebra knows that Mauro is right about how much they have. The thing about her is that she gets off on taking the money -- and the privilege and things it can buy -- from people whom she may see as having taken it from her. The adoptive home that has been mentioned could have been filled with pervs.

Thanks so much, Adriana, I enjoyed your recap of a less stressful episode. After night before last night we needed that.

I just finished watching so the hug is very prominent in my mind. Paz looked peaceful and content while being hugged. But of course, Vermin had not so perfect timing.

I’m hoping Bosco will lighten up as he spends time with this wacky family.

I think Mauro said killing the adolescent was going to haunt him the rest of his life. I realized he meant Gorila and this maybe was the first time he killed. He sure seems ready to start a normal life. And he was kind to Sam, but I guess his fear of Ginebra was stronger than his feelings for Sam.

I’m thinking Estaban will be her next victim, although I don’t think she can charm him into marrying her.

Liz

I am calling this the " I am Spartacus" episode . Everyone stepping up to take the blame and save sweet Paz.

I think that both Gin and Mauro are damaged beyond repair and both are destined for a huge deadly anvil . Mauro has a hidden heart , but following Gin's plans blindly has doomed him even if he finally turns on her . He stood by for years and watched Gin callously abuse that little girl , and then he put her in a wooden box and threw her down an embankment ( which should have killed her in a most gruesome way.) He doesn't deserve redemption.

I dont know how they are going to keep hiding Luna. It will be interesting to see how the writers proceed with this saga.

Okay , time for some romance . We saw Daniel put on the moves in "Invencible." I think the chemistry between Daniel and Claudia is going to be strong.

Susan

If Mauro wasn't damaged beyond repair before this episode he is now. I can see him having nightmares on a regular basis from here on.

The only way to hide this child would be for Paz to take her our of the area, even out of the country. She doesn't have the dinero for that and at this stage she can't explain the need to Esteban.

There are several ways this can go.

Now for a discussion question: If Elvira's father had not taken her baby away would she still be the way she is now?

Susan, I thought of Spartacus, too!
I enjoyed all the banter, music, and humor of this episode because we need all the lightness we can get in this dark tale! Who knew we had a serial black widow on top of everything!
Great summaries continue! We are so lucky to have this team of recappers! Thank you!

Terrific recap, Adriana! I am enjoying this novela. I am sort of having flashbacks to Uni's usual theme: humble folks are warm, loving, and kind. All the actors in Paz's family are quite good in their roles. It was a bit sad to see, but I can sort of understand Mireya's going off on Sal. My only-child boy was not that big of a problem child, but I can relate to that angry fear that the kid might do something bad. I am enjoying this extended family.

What is a bit farfetched is the portrayal of that neighborhood and the Richie Rich kids, at least the nice two, being all gaga about it. I guess I find it hard to believe that such a place exists where the poor people are all kind and the houses nicely painted in pastels.

Bosco, pfft! Are they waiting until the last week for this kid to stop being a pain in the hindquarters? OTOH Esteban's decision to not let him compete was not a good move. Fencing appears to be his one happy place. And he'll only resent Sal and Pepa more. Am I right that it's Pepa, short for Pedro Pablo, rather than Pepe?

It drives me nuts that Vermin still seems to have full access to Paz and her family. I know TN writers like the trope about the former, jealous boyfriend. But this guy is intolerable.

I can relate to one bathroom. I lived in two houses with my family before I married, and each had only one bathroom. That first house in Ohio dated to the 19th century. No shower, only a bathtub. My elder sister was going through a "princess" phase in high school, and my brother and I nearly had burst bladders during this phase.

My prediction is Mauro dying saving someone from Ginebra.

I was scratching my head over that "bathtub." Are there places that still have ones like that? How do you empty that after bathing? You'd work up a sweat and need another bath.

Urban, it looked like they had a shower stall without a bathtub , and Paz put that metal tub . I suppose she then dumped the water down the shower drain .
Susan

"Now for a discussion question: If Elvira's father had not taken her baby away would she still be the way she is now?"

Urban, I say no...In the flashback, she seemed to love the child and was truly devastated. I think she chose to harden her heart. To survive.

Diana

"Now for a discussion question: If Elvira's father had not taken her baby away would she still be the way she is now?"

I agree with Diana, this trauma changed her. She may or may not have been Mary Sunshine before or after this if it hadn’t happened, but she wouldn’t have been as bad.
