El Amor No Tiene Receta, #4, 02/29/24: Dark and Stormy

The Unhappiest Restaurant in Mexico City

Fermin plants a wet one on Paz, who slaps him right quick. Esteban helpfully offers to throw him out, but Paz says it's family stuff and not to worry about it. She walks her new boss out, explaining that the unbathed one is her total ex, signed & sealed, who just got out of jail for things she'd rather not go into. Esteban says he understands what it's like to be stuck with icky people because you're related to them.

Paz tells Fer he can sleep in the armchair tonight but he has to be out in the morning. After all, he's the reason the loan sharks have made their lives miserable all these years. Fer says he's going to take care of all that and flashes back to the night he hid Mauro's gym bag o' cash in the ventilation duct in the hospital, where surely no one has looked in six years.

The rest of the family urges Paz to forget about Fermin and concentrate on the new guy. Salomon objects that men are not just objects, which is pretty funny, but he is reminded that they're in this multifaceted mess because he was up on the roof cheating on his girlfriend instead of up on the roof fixing the plumbing. Not clear why the plumbing is on the roof, but if that's the only impossible thing we have to believe before breakfast we're getting off easy.

The Forest of Uncertain Death

Mauro flashes back to when he was putting Sam to bed and she asked what he and her mom were like as kids. He tells her they were in a very ugly situation, but her mom was really brave and they got through it. She says she wants to be brave, too, like mama. He tells her she already is, braver than she knows. Te amo's and tickles and we'll try not to think it's creepy when he climbs into bed with her.

Needless to say, he cannot light the match. He sobs and runs away.

Full circle back to the opening scene: Sam sobs in the box, attracting the attention of the dog-rabbit, who jumps on top of the box and squeaks loudly. Along come some lumberjacks, who almost deploy their trusty chain saw to discover what treasure may be inside -- but fortunately they hear Sam crying and use a hammer instead.

Oh, no, it's a kid! What should we do? Take her to the authorities? No, they'll think we had something to do with it. I know -- let's drop her off on the front steps of a locked church in the middle of the night with nothing but a few pesos and the dog-rabbit. Sounds like a plan!

And guess what? SHE HAS AMNESIA. Well, of course she does.

Highway to Hell

Mauro is gibbering to himself in his car. I should never have abandoned her the way Ginebra and I were abandoned; I'll never be able to forgive myself; NEVER. Finally he can't take it anymore and returns to the scene of the crime...but of course the box is empty and Sam is gone.

Mexico by Night

Sam names the dog Cobija (blanket), because she keeps her warm. But not very, because she's freezing. Suddenly Cobija jumps out of her arms and takes off through the park. She chases after her and is predictably freaked out by that cute Televisa rat. Cobija comes back with a piece of bread. Good dog! But she's still hungry, and now they're lost.

A ragged little boy materializes out of the gloom. He tells her his name is Monito (little monkey); what's hers? She doesn't know. He says he'll call her Luna after the beautiful full moon. He gives her his cap to warm her up and says he'll take her somewhere safe.

Widower Mansion

Esteban is helping the kids with their homework. Bosco is struggling with math, but they'll all work on it together. Gala needs a topic for her Social Studies essay and her dad suggests she write about missing children. He says he has something important to tell them, but before he can finish Yaya busts in and announces she is moving in! The kids are inexplicably happy to see her (and her creepy chauffeur.)

The Only Hospital in Mexico City (T.O.H.I.M.C.)

Ginebra spins her tale of woe to a mildly skeptical policeman, who eventually wanders off. Mauro shows up and lies to her face about setting the box on fire. She asks if he brought the photo of Sam and insists they make a public-appeal video right that very minute. Does she look tragic enough? He assures her she does.

Meanwhile, Fermin pops the plate off the ol' Bank of Last Resort in the basement men's room and finds...nothing. Um, surprise?

Something in the Air

A big storm kicks up just as Ginebra's video is being broadcast on tv. Esteban sees it and recalls how they met her at the ambassador's party in Europe -- you know, The Ambassador to Europe -- and he also did some business with poor dead Elias; he should call with his condolences. Paz sees it and immediately feels the call of the blood from Sam's picture. (It even works virtually! Who knew?)

Ginebra is thrilled they've gone viral. She crows to Mauro that they're both murderers, both cold as ice. He flashes back to when they were living on the street and says he sometimes kind of misses that. Gin pitches a fit and throws her hospital food on the floor.

In Other News:

- Yaya criticizes Esteban's cooking and insists he hire a chef so her grandchildren don't starve to death. (I think we can see where this is going.) Gala dumps her dinner in the toilet and looks critically at her perfectly normal teenage tummy.

- Monito takes "Luna" to a tent camp where he finds her a coat and some newspapers to line it with. They seem to be sleeping in the luggage compartment of an abandoned bus. Too, too sad.

- Mireya chides Sal for being a womanizer with commitment issues JUST LIKE HIS FATHER. Future bad penny alert!

- Kenzo comes to Esteban's office to tell him the experts say the video of Bere is legit. Esteban grabs her photo and bursts into tears. Paz comes up behind him and embraces him in a way that no one should embrace their boss, especially on their first day of work.

Blue Lass,

Thank you for peppering your marvelous recap with wry wit.

So many amazing lines but “the unbathed one is her total ex, signed & sealed” and “Paz sees it and immediately feels the call of the blood from Sam's picture. (It even works virtually! Who knew?)” were outstanding.

If the flashbacks are to be believed, Mauro seemed to care for Sam and it was obvious she loved him. How his diminished humanity allowed him to abandon her in the woods was so disheartening but at least he did go back albeit too late. Not quite as “cold as ice” as Ginebra, and certainly not as deadly.

Thankfully, Sam now has Cobija and Monito, who in a few short minutes showed her more kindness than Ginebra ever did. I loved that Monito christened Sam Luna “after the beautiful full moon”.

Did absurd Fermin think he could waltz back into Paz’ life? I hope the fact he sold his daughter eats him alive.

I was disheartened that the video was deemed legit. Is AI so advanced now that there is no way to separate truth from fiction? Poor Esteban really has his hands full with “Yaya”.

Paz’ expression watching Ginebra’s cringeworthy lies while Sam’s picture flashed was heartbreaking.

Much more angst to follow.

Thank you, Blue Lass, you managed to make a funny recap out of another filled with sadness episode.
I especially loved your mention of "Europe's ambasador" Haha, yeah, one big happy country this Europe.
That hug from the back at the end was pretty hot. Totally inappropriate, of course, but in novela land it's supposed to be cute and romantic. Since both Paz and Esteban have been celibate for the last 6 years, the touch must have given them both the tingles.

More later!

First of all, may I just say...WOW. I haven't read a Blue Lass recap in a long time , and You have not lost A bit of your wit and humor , which was exactly what we needed to get through this episode of evil on warp speed. I have too many favorite lines to quote them all ...but " dog rabbit" will live in my brain ..so perfect. Thank you , Blue Lass. That bouncing recap was exactly what I needed to start my day and put the creepy evil in its place . Presto bingo .

When I heard " Yaya" , I was confused because I have learned that there are many names for " Grandma"across the globe _but the only time I have ever heard " Yaya" was from my friend who was Greek. She called her grandma "Yaya.". Mexicans usually call their grandmas " Abuela" or " Abuelita." Is dreadful Elvira supposed to be Greek?

Your snappy recap reminded me that this is not a Turkish dizi , so everything is going to be great by the finale .We just have to ride this wave of angst and nasty to the end. It is going to get darker and more dangerous before we get one big happy , well fed family...including Blanket, the dog rabbit living in the big, opulent mansion .

Exactly what experts did Keno talk to about that fake video? Is Mauro supposed To be a tech whiz?

When Estebsn was standing in his office crying and those hands appeared on his fine shoulders , I thought they were supposed to be Berenice's as he conjured her up in his fine mind. I was happy to see that they were Paz's and for real . yay. ( Isnt it great that the heroine has such a short name .) Just sayin' Susan

P.s. Loved your sub headings , but I couldn't decipher the initials ?????
Susan

Thanks, Blue Lass. Great to have back in the fold.

Vermin is both manipulative and delusional. After what he did to Paz he has some bloody nerve thinking he can get her back. The insults he threw at Esteban were pathetic.

At least now we know what Vermin did with the money. However, if he had any way to tell Rubio where to find it what would have stopped that thug from claiming it was gone and demanding more? Vermin is probably a DMW now.

Mauro should have taken Sam to a church and burned the box. At least the two lumberjacks weren't pervs.

I am so sick of llamada de a sangre. There is no such magic. However, the drawings Paz did do look like Samara.

Why do producers still associate classical music with villains? At least it wasn't Pachelbel.

The video probably came off as authentic because of the manner of delivery. It must have been sent from a burner phone. Mauro has the original locked up which probably can be traced to the date it was made... 6 years after the crime. That could be the evidence of deep-faking.

I can barely believe that Isabella Tena (Gala) was Luz in Mi Corazon es Tuyo.

Isabella Tena was also Gale's daughter in " Invencible." Esteban's younger son was Gale's younger son Oliver in " Invencib)e. " The little girl playing Samara was the daughter of the cop in that show . I think that the actor portraying Bosco was the older son in " Perdonna."

Susan

Elvira's silent, hovering bodyguard \chauffeur is Raul Coranado. I haven't seen him in a show in a long time , but he was recently in one of the Mexican dancing competition shows .
Susan

Blue Lass, loved your recap!!! You know you have talent when you can make this sadness funny! Thank you for sharing your wit with us!

I haven’t watched the episode yet, I was sort of afraid of what I would see, but now I’m prepared :)

I can’t believe they let Vermin spend the night in their home!!! I would have kicked him out so fast!!!

Susan, Raul Coranado was in the novela, ‘Cabo’ last year, but a lot of people didn’t see that and for good reason! lol

We still don't know what the company sells, right? How do they think we can get invested without this important piece of information? LOL

I can't believe Vermin dares show his face either. Nevermind the fact that he left 3 women pay his debt while he had room and board paid by the state, but he knows what he's done to his daughter!! Why was he in jail anyway? For being violent with Paz?

Blue Lass, thank you very much for your wonderful recap that made me laugh so much. A big thanks to Urban and Adriana as well for their amazing recaps.

This novela has me hooked already!

Ginebra is scarily evil. I had a long time to see such a villain and here we are again.

LOL I love Vermin for Fermín. Was it Susan that came up with it?

Speaking of Susan, yes, we do call our grandmothers "yaya" (I don't anyone cares but it's spelled "γιαγιά" in our alphabet). Okay, now I'm also wondering if Elvira is Greek. I'll keep my ears open ;)

Adriana, I was also going to ask why Vermin was in jail. Was that explained? I don't think so.

All caught up now and ready for tomorrow's recap ;)

Loved the recap, Blue Lass! Happy to see you back recapping with this one. " Paz comes up behind him and embraces him in a way that no one should embrace their boss, especially on their first day of work." You can say that again!

All in all, the episode went fast and was enjoyable but , of course, I had a few criticisms and a few things I liked.

A BIG thumbs down to:

Mauro not lighting the box with a match but deciding to let fate takes it course with Samara rather than coming to her aid and removing her from that gasoline soaked box taking her himself to a church or orphanage at that time. He deserves fro being a coward.

Paz was absolutely stupid for allowing her no good ex-con-ex to stay over night. Has she not suffered enough because of him? Her reasons made so sense. So happy his money was missing.

The extremely dark and huge eyebrows painted on Paz's face. You see the brows before her face.

A big thumbs up to:

Lupita warning Paz to not let herself be worn down by her ex-con-ex.

Monito baptizing Sam as Luna.

Hola, patio! I'm at a conference and just popped back to the hotel to fix some typos. Belated gracias to Adriana and Urban for their stellar recaps this week. We're really rollin'.

Susan, "TOHIMC" is short for "The Only Hospital in Mexico City." It's a standing joke that no matter how big the town is -- and Mexico City is pretty big! -- all the characters always end up in the same hospital/bar/park/coffee shop. Sure is convenient.

Filling in: Fermin went to jail for spousal abuse, and he was picked up that very night, which is why he couldn't go back for the money. But in an earlier conversation, Ginebra asked Mau if he remembered to put the tracker in the bag, so it probably wasn't there for long anyway.

Susan, is Raul Coronado the bendy guy in white in the opening credits? He moves like a dancer.

Urban, what was the classical piece Elvira was playing? It sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it.

Blue Lass , Raul is the guy in the intro opening the car door for Elvira to get out and leap at her grandchildren .

Weirdo, thank you for confirming that "yaya" is Greek for grandma. Why would children in Mexico call their abuela that unless she is Greek? They didn't say Nana, Nonnie, Grammy , Granny , or Memaw. Odd.

My tablet actually always converts Fermin to Vermin ..... and hey....it's not wrong . Plus, I got tired of changing it every time .

Susan

Blue Lass, I think the bendy guy in white that you might be referring to in the intro is Juan Osorio's son who sings the theme song.

Susan

Blue Lass, I can't remember the name of that piece. It's been driving me nuts since last night.

I thought it was Beethoven , but it's not . It sounds very familiar . Vivaldi?

Fans have already made music videos of the scenes between Paz and Esteban. These two have great chemistry .
The theme song is " So O Si."

Susan

Sorry to be so late to the party. I just finished watching last night’s episode. Blue Lass, I really enjoyed your writing. I could almost hear you saying your side comments. You made a sad basically sad, or upsetting episode fun to read. Thanks also for the info on Fermin. I wondered why he waited so long to get the money. And it sounds like our bad guys got the money back with the use of the tracker. I miss so much, I’m glad I found Caray Caray!

Now I can see how they won’t find Sam. The church would have called the police and she would have been sent back to Ginebra. Who knows what her fate would have been, and also Mauro’s. But now it will be a while before she and Paz will be reunited.

My dog is named Luna! My grandson’s came up with the name, and neither knows any Spanish. I thought the name was so original but there are quite a few dogs with that name.

Liz

I finally actually watched the episode and one thing can be said, no matter how dire the circumstances that little girl faced, she's still better off now away from Ginebra, and Liz you have a very good point about how the church would have called the police! That would have been horrible!

After all the talk of who is who in the intro, I watched it carefully and I noticed something. I don't think this breaks spoiler rules because it isn't a spoiler, just a guess/observation and it relates to the discussion we were having yesterday about what Ginebra's intentions might be with Esteban. I noticed in the intro that when it shows Ginebra and Mauro passing Paz and Esteban, Ginebra doesn't even glance in the direction of Esteban, but walks haughtily by. This has me wondering if maybe we won't be having the traditional bad girl after the galan storyline and her interaction with Esteban might be motivated by something else. That would be a nice break from the norm!

Hopefully tonight will be at least a little less dire.

The classical piece was Mozart - Piano Concerto 21.
