Thanks for the Tuesday recap, novelera. Call me a “crabby old lady”, too. More flashbacks than usual in this dizi. And since I go back and forth between the Turkish and Spanish eps, I notice that not only does our version cut scenes, but they also edit the order of scenes. They also chop up longer scenes and mix other scenes into them. It’s annoying when I recap, going back and forth like that. Why can’t they leave the longer scenes alone?
I thought it was stupid that Aslan didn’t want to look at the Sermat footage. Thank goodness, Turgut did. And even though Hulya wasn’t behind the murder, she had been working with Ergun against Devin.
Seher was fairly lucid in the Tuesday ep. But she forgot how to play Okey on Wednesday.
Thanks for the Wednesday recap, Niecie.
I don’t know… does Istanbul have a Spanish music radio station? Here’s what AsDev listened to on the car radio:
Song: Aşk Lazım/Love is Needed - Gökhan Türkmen
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nIaKev4T_o
Asuman needs a cold shower. Cut scene when they arrived at the hotel. Asuman accosts Turgut in front of the hotel. She found out there’s a pool and she wished that he had brought a bathing suit with him. He’s ticked off, of course. She replies, life is not how we breathe minute by minute. Life is how many minutes we live that take our breath away… so… I don't think we should die before enjoying it. He snaps back, what are you talking about? Let me unload the suitcases.
Another cut scene: Ceylan and Asuman notice a bus load of tall athletic looking guys coming to the hotel. Ceylan is interested but Asuman tells her guys like that are only good for getting a pan off the top shelf.
I sort of expected Asuman to interrupt Turgut’s “me time”.
No surprise that Serap brought a gun. I could see the wheels turning when Cihan mentioned the family vacation. Can love heal a person?
Lol, those two jerks hitting on DevRap (good one, Niecie). Why didn’t they say, we’re married women, and our husbands are coming over here to beat the stuffing out of you.
Thanks so much, Niecie, for your recap. I like your sense of humor a lot!
Once more I wonder why the writers are making Aslan SO annoying. It seems to me that, now that Devin is a sure thing, he feels free to be as domineering as possible. Giving Devin 30 minutes to speak with Serap was outrageous.
Why are guests at a hotel grilling food? I'd demand a 50% deduction in the room bill if that were a part of a hotel stay.
I'm still totally down on any long-term relationship between Bedri and Yagmur. You could not find two more screwed up and potentially violet people searching far and wide. Remember when Yagmur got her sister to show up at a hospital under false premises in the very first episode? And she behaved like a complete fool running after her awful father. Even now she's blaming Devin for the cad's demise. And Bedri, my God. He's working on his second patricide, not to mention hiring prostitutes that messed up Aslan's other marina deal. I can't stand him.
Looked to me like Aslan and Cihan were playing foosball. I enjoyed that interaction and a hint of how they were when kids.
Devin was making some real progress with Serap. But, of course, these writers don't let that last for long. They bring in a complete set of loser guys to try to hit on them. I was surprised Cihan and Aslan didn't punch them. Maybe tonight.
I fully expected Asuman to burst in when Turgut was perusing the mini-bar in his hotel bathrobe, looking like there was nothing underneath it. Again, maybe tonight. At first I thought it was great for Turgut to have a love interest, but I'm beginning to doubt that the aggressive Asuman would work out for him.
Dondi, thanks for explaining the slicing and dicing that is happening .
The person I look forward to seeing the most is Turgut.
These people packed all their toxicity for this fun trip.
Susan
It must be a 4 * hotel! Meals, except for room service are on the guest at hotels I stay in. Well, in all honesty the only hotels we stay in we feel fortunate if there is a Continental breakfast. Maybe upscale hotels have barbecue grills for the guests to use. I think I spied a golf course on the roof.
Sad eyed Serap. I hope she and Cihan make a go of it.
Belated thanks, once again, Niecie, for Wednesday's recap.
I've been rooting for a Bedri-Yagmur romance, but thanks for reminding me how violent Bedri can be (his stabbing his supposed friend in what I hope was his thigh). Now I don't know what to think.
#62 - We don’t see a fight with the losers who approached Devin and Serap, but we see Aslan shaking out his fist in the hotel hallway. The four are getting along pretty well. Serap thanks Devin sincerely for their talk.
I should have known they wouldn’t spare us a scene of Asuman pestering Turgut. She insinuates herself into his room. He passes out. And the next day, while he’s getting breakfast, she hints something might have happened.
Iskoc finds the records at the hospital of Serap’s illness. He finds that she attempted suicide and Hulya was the one who brought her to the facility.
Hulya threatens Nedret (in a Turkish bath!) with telling Bedri about Ilyas being his father if the two of them don’t return immediately to Adana.
Bedri shows up drunk at Yagmur’s. She settles him on the sofa. He babbles some and then proposes marriage. The next morning, he asks again. Run, Yagmur!!!
Well we know Yagmur won’t get Eko back. Elif is pregnant. But Eko thinks the test with the positive result is a positive COVID test and she’s risked everyone in the restaurant! She fills him in, and he’s overjoyed.
Can I get Cihan for my own? He’s just so wonderful with his sad, sad wife.
Seher is wonderful throughout this episode. She’s so happy to be celebrating her birthday this way. She seems pretty together in every scene.
At breakfast Cihan has made himself a plate to take to a table. Seher insists he come over. She wants Cihan and Aslan to sing a song they used to sing. It’s very affecting, a really happy scene, with others at the table clapping. But of course, Serap chose that moment to come down for breakfast, looks horrified, and flees back upstairs.
Aslan confronts Hulya about her having taken Serap to the loony bin. She tries to pretend she was being a good person, but Aslan doesn’t buy it.
Devin and Nedret talk on a bench outside. Nedret tells Devin about Ilyas. Devin advises her to tell Bedri the truth, saying every child deserves to know who their father is.
Serap confronts Hulya in the hotel lobby. Hulya tries the “You were always a mess” dominance ploy, but Serap hangs tough. She tells Hulya that she (Hulya) does have something to fear. Doesn’t Hulya worry that Seher will remember?
Poor Cihan tries to explain what Seher meant to him and why he sang. When he tries to say what harm could that be to please the old woman, Serap says that Seher’s sin was having brought up Yusuf Soykan. (Whoa! Are they hinting the abuser was Yusuf and NOT Ibo? But she even said out loud that she killed Ibo? The dern captions seem to be there for 60% of the dialog, and we don’t have the ability to lip read, but I was sure she said Yusuf.) Then she goes to their room and locks herself in the bathroom.
Nedret tells Hulya that she’ll tell Bedri about Ilyas, and that means Hulya doesn’t have anything to threaten her with. When Hulya leaves, she calls him and says they need to talk. He refuses. He says he knows everything, that the one who ruined her life was Ilyas Koruzade. She tries to get him to listen, but he says he’ll “finish the story”. He hangs up. She tries him once, gets voice mail, and then dials Ilyas.
Novelera, thanks. I heard yusef also. I never was sure who did it.
I didn't realize it was a psychiatric hospital. Anyone else shocked that each year only had one binder, or that binders were used even. I pretty much thought everything is on computers nowadays.
Kat in SC: Looking forward to seeing your recap of last night's episode.
Watched on phone so I didn't take notes as normal. This will be a highlights post.
Francisco is through with Fernanda. He will pay the week at the hotel and a sum to get her started, and that is it. Mirna offers her a roof over her head gratis and advises her to try and get a job with Adelberto.
It's surgery day. Gabriel, Tania and dad are there waiting. Gabriel goes to the office as he is not really vested in a positive outcome
Monica rejects Fernanda's overtures to form a relationship.
Not sure what happened between Claudia and Fermin. Something important may have been discussed about the dastardly duo but I'm not sure.
Ana is not going out with Joseph again. Erika reminds her she deserves a shot at real love, not the he's my savior love she feels for Francisco.
The surgery was a success. The best match was a pig member. Now he really has earned the name of being a pig. He is so repentant, tells Tania he truly loves her and wants to marry her.
Fernanda meets with the lawyer at 5 p.m. I think in Dallas. He left her a video. In it he claims he is only leaving her this video. She is ordered to buy masses for his soul. She is suitably offended. Then Richard's drops the bombshell of the episode. She is his soul heir!
Kat in SC: Thanks for the recap of Thursday night's episode. My personal thoughts (it'll be super-short)
*Tania: You're a DEAD WOMAN WALKING because it's only a matter of time before Slick Alonso figures out that YOU were the one, who castrated his Little Bishop.
*Mira offering Crazy Goldie Locks a place to stay LOL. Are you that INCOMPETENT Mirna ? You're playing with Russian roulette especially associating with two psychopaths (Goldie Locks & Beltran).
*What's Richards' angle in all of this ? Getting more creepy by the minute. 36 more episodes to go.
*Gabriel still another Jackass just like Alfredo & Slick Alonso: Big question is whether or not all of them will get Karma anvils ?
*Erika does have a point, Ana! Everyone on CarayCaray knows full well that Francisco (if he doesn't get killed off) & Gullible Elisa are likely going to be endgame.
*Monica rejecting Crazy Goldie Locks on forming any type of relationship: Good for her, but let's see how this plays out.
Many thanks, novelera, for this excellent short recap.
I confess I was at first rooting for Asuman and Turgut as a couple, but that train has now passed. Asuman's behavior with Turgut is beyond absurd. The word I keep thinking is outrageous, perhaps even disgusting. He clearly did NOT want her to come into his room, he wanted to go to sleep. She nonetheless pushes her way in and...who knows? I sure hope the two of them didn't have sex.
I enjoyed the scene between Eko and Elif. It's hard to believe that Eko is so out of it that he doesn't know about a pregnancy indicator (I'm sure there's a more specific word for that device, but I can't offhand recall what it is). But I did enjoy the scene and his assuming it was a Covid indicator. And I was relieved to see that he was delighted when he finally realized that Elif was pregnant. I was momentarily afraid that he was still wanting Yagmur.
And yes, I was happy to see that Seher seemed quite together mentally and physically all through the episode. However, this being a dizi, I do take seriously her strong feeling that this will be her last birthday.
And speaking of last birthdays, I suspect that either Bedri or Ilyas has had his last birthday, but at this point I'm not sure who it will be. Or even whether I'm right that one of them will die.
Finally, I too clearly heard "Yusuf." That does seem to suggest that it was Yusuf who abused Serap, not Ibo. But this dizi seems to specialize in surprise, so I guess we'll have to wait to be sure.
Thanks for the fine recap, novelera.
Nedret took note of the breakfast interaction between Asuman and Turgut. I didn’t like what Asu did to Turgut. Whether they did the deed or not, maybe this is a plan to trap him into marriage? He will have to make an honest woman of her.
Serap definitely said Yusuf. I guess all the OG Soykans protected him. What dirty people they were and some still are—looking at you Hulya. Oh, my poor Cihan, I think your wife might try suicide again.
I guess Eko forgot how babies are made. I hope their kid takes after Elif.
Yagmur and Bedri will probably end up together—if Bedri makes it to the end. I wonder if Bedri knows about Yagmur’s sordid past?

Friday recap will be up on Saturday. Will Serap use her gun?
Gracias, Novelera. Super recap.
I thought those guys hitting on Devin and Serap might be foreigners, but I couldn't catch their accents. Guess we'll never know. Honestly, "Can I buy you a drink?" aren't fighting words unless the husband is sitting right there.
Way back, that was definitely Ibo taunting young Serap beneath her bed. But she's calling out "Yusuf" now. Color me perplexed.
Devin can hold her own with Aslan, bossy as he may be. I'm not surprised she's not telling him about Nedret and Bedri and Ilyas.
Poor Yagmur doesn't know the real Bedri. I think Eko still loves Yagmur, but having a baby will make him happier being with Elif.
I thought the scene with Eko and Elif was cute and I have hopes for them, even if Eko is still a bit dumb. I was glad to see that he hand gel after that pregnancy stick was passed to him. Don’t you pee on those to get the result? Eww.

Kiymet sees Nedret’s incoming call to Ilyas’ and shuts his phone down.
Panicked Nedret is ready to head back to Istanbul and Hulya warns her, your torment is just beginning.
Cihan is still sitting by the bathroom door, begging Serap to open. She says she needs to be alone and asks him to leave. He reluctantly agrees. He will wait downstairs at the bar—maybe you will come later?
Serap leaves a heartbreaking message on her father’s phone. She sobs, Dad… can you get me out of here? I feel so alone in this place. I need you to hold my hand. I need you by my side, Dad. What happened, happened. I really need you now. I have a huge void inside me, Dad. I haven’t been able to fill this void in 16 years. Maybe, if I weren’t afraid of you, if I felt you loved me just a little, if you could say that you love me once again… maybe this wouldn’t be happening. Maybe that void would have been filled. Despite it all, I love you very much, Dad. I love you very much, Dad! She weeps.
Devin speaks with Hulya. We saw you talking to Serap earlier. We were worried because it seemed like a tense conversation. Are you okay? Hulya brushes it off. It’s nothing, she (Serap) is crazy. Devin asks, is there anything you’d like to tell me? Something you can’t tell Aslan, but you can tell me? No, Hulya replies, this Serap thing has been blown out of proportion. Devin lets her know she’s always available to talk.
Aslan checks in with Turgut. Turgut says Cihan and Serap went to their room. She’s still in the room. Aslan asks him to talk to the hotel’s security chief. Have him take you to the surveillance room. Watch the cameras if you can’t get into their room. [wow, all you have to do is ask and you can watch security footage?]
Nedret is anxious to get back before anything bad happens. She prays, Lord, protect my son.
Bedri arrives at Ilyas’ and the old man is out there. Bedri takes the knife with him. Ilyas asks, what happened, Bedri? You look upset. Did something bad happen? Bedri replies, nothing happened to me, Kara Ilyas. Your heart is evil. Don’t beat around the bush, Ilyas says, what’s wrong? It’s about my mother, Bedri answers. I know what you put her through. Ilyas is surprised. He asks Bedri to listen. Bedri shouts, you seduced her when she was young! She trusted you! How could you? Answer!
Ilyas’ men are ready to draw their weapons but Ilyas motions for them to stand down. Listen, Ilyas says, before you judge, hear me out. I know exactly what your mother went through.
You don’t know, Bedri fires back, you ruined my mom’s life, and you left! Were you so afraid to die? I risked my life for Nedret, Ilyas shouts back, what are you talking about? By leaving, I kept her alive! Bedri responds, my mother died every day! That bastard father of mine put her in the grave every day! On the nights we slept together, her tears would soak my face. Did you know that, too?
AsDev walk Seher to the birthday dinner table. Meanwhile, Serap getting ready to go, with the gun in her hand. She exits the room and places the gun in her bag. Cihan has been waiting for her nearby.
Bedri accuses, my mother was crying because of you. Ilyas wants to explain but Bedri won’t hear it. Nothing you do will redeem you, before my eyes or my mother’s, he tells Ilyas. Now only Allah can have mercy on you. Bedri takes out the knife. Ilyas’ men draw their guns. Ilyas shouts for them to put down the guns and leave.
If you’re going to stab me, you’d better do it, Ilyas says, go ahead. Do it now. Do it in peace. No man can die until he experiences what he’s done. [I hear this phrase often in dizis.] I killed my father with a knife like that. What’s that supposed to mean, Bedri asks, you killed your father with a knife?
Nedret arrives at Ilyas’ and jumps from the car. Bedri, stop! Don’t do it! Bedri still wants an explanation. Nedret shouts, put the knife away! Bedri shouts again, what did you mean?! Nedret shouts—he is your father! Ilyas is your father. Bedri is floored. He drops the knife.
Cihan and Serap spot Leyla on the way to dinner. Cihan calls out to her and hugs her—şükür olsun. Leyla does not hug back. She offers a cold congratulations on their marriage. Cihan replies, I know you’re angry and you’re right. But we all make mistakes and we don’t abandon our loved ones. Serap steps forward, Leyla... I’m very sorry for everything. She hugs Leyla and quietly says, you’ll soon understand why I did it. Leyla glares at Cihan and Serap, then walks.
Leyla arrives at the dinner table and is warmly greeted by everyone except Hulya. Leyla hugs and kisses Seher. Cihan and Serap arrive. Cihan kisses Seher. Serap nervously goes to the table. Devin greets her. Aslan is wary. It’s tense. Serap fidgets with her fingers and Devin takes notice.
Turgut views the security footage. He sees the earlier convo between Hulya and Serap. He sees Cihan and Serap meeting Leyla. He asks the guard to show footage from outside Cihan and Serap’s room.
Asuman brings Seher’s birthday cake to the table. The Soykans sing Happy Birthday. This is just another blow for Serap and Seher blows out her candles. There’s some joking about Seher’s age. I think she’s 95.
Serap rises from her seat. If you don’t mind, I’d like to say a few words. Especially since you’re not going to speak, because you obviously lack the courage to do so. I didn’t either, until today. Hulya interjects, don’t say another word. Sit down and behave yourself. Seher says to let Sad Eyes speak.
Serap continues, yesterday you asked why I was crying so much on that day. I’ll tell you. Hulya asks Cihan to take his wife away. Aslan intervenes, let’s hear what she has to say. Serap opens her bag. Is it the gun? No, it’s a pic of Serap from 16 years ago. She places it on the table and says, on that day, you saw me crying. That innocent girl in that picture was never seen again. She died that day. First, they took her body... and then her soul. Serap declares, on that day, 16 years ago... I was raped. I was raped by a Soykan.
Everyone is stunned except for that disgusting Hulya, who says, that’s not true. You’re sick. I wasn’t sick, Serap answers, but your husband sure was. Your husband raped me! Yusuf Soykan! Serap glares at Hulya.
Turgut sees the footage of Serap exiting her room with the gun in her hand. He tries to call Aslan but there’s no signal in the room. He runs off.
Serap continues, I kept quiet for years. I didn’t think you’d believe me. I was right. Hulya scolds, that’s enough! You won’t tarnish our family name!
Serap asks, do you remember what you said to me? I remember. I’m cursed to remember. You said, “my husband wouldn’t do that.” You said it, but he did it! Hulya responds, you’re lying. [forgive me, but at this point, I hope that Serap shoots her.]
Serap reminds Hulya, didn’t you take me to the hospital? She shows the scar on her wrist. The doctors treated this wound, but the wound in my soul hasn’t healed. No one would listen to me. Everyone looked away.
Devin tries to calm Serap. Serap... focus on healing yourself. Your loved one is here. See, the man you love is by your side. Please calm down, okay? Let’s talk. Cihan begs, Serap, don’t do this. Serap replies, I couldn’t be your family, Cihan. But I can honestly say... ben seni çok sevdim (I loved you very much). Cihan, I love you very much.
Aslan asks Serap to calm down. Devin worries something bad is about to happen. Aslan gets the message from Turgut—silahı var (she has a gun). Serap asks Cihan to forgive her. She reaches into her bag and takes out the gun. Panic and screams. Don’t do it! The scene blurs. I think there’s a gunshot but we don’t see more. Commercial break.
Ay, Cihan grieves at Serap’s grave. Aslan’s voice over: a desperate man grabs a handful of fresh soil from his wife’s grave. It’s very sad. Trust me, the first minute is the saddest. The first minute you realize that your beloved no longer breathes. A minute of desperation. She was my family, brother—that’s what he said while she was laid to rest. You didn’t hear him say it, but I did. You weren’t watching him, but I was. I saw Cihan lose another member of his family because of the Soykan family curse.
Aslan continues, I was finally sure the only way to rid ourselves of the curse was to destroy what was left of the man I was ashamed to call my father. No one listened to her. They all turned from her. And I made a promise to my brother. Everyone will see her and hear her.
Cihan speaks to Serap. It’s not enough, sevgilim. It’s not enough. My heart won’t know peace until Hulya Soykan dies.
Aslan assembles the family. Disgusting Hulya asks, why did you call us here? We are here because of Yusuf Soykan, he replies. He was dishonorable, a rapist. Today we are going to kill him once and for all. From now on, Yusuf Soykan will no longer be associated with this family.
We see signs being removed from the marina as Aslan continues, his [Yusuf's] inheritance, his properties, shares at the marina, [we see Aslan signing papers.] Everything that belonged to him will be eliminated, transferred to others or sold. Aslan wants to give the marina shares to Nedret. He tells her to pay the debt with the shares and use the left over for charity.
Hulya has the gall to object, how can you decide this without consulting me? Aslan silently fumes for a second and then asks everyone to come outside.
Mourners have gathered at Ilyas’ house. We hear reciting of the Quran (Arabic). Men and women are in separate rooms, of course. A man comes and whispers in Kiymet’s ear.
Ilyas is in a separate room, listening to the last message from Serap over and over again—”I love you so much, Dad!” Kiymet enters and says, Cihan is here. Would you like to see him? Ilyas nods yes without looking up. Cihan enters with his suitcase and sits.
The Soykans reassemble outside. Isko and Turgut are there, too. There are 2 large barrels filled with US dollars. Aslan addresses Hulya, you asked how I could decide this without you? Hulya asks him to stop weakening the family. The hyenas could destroy us. Don’t do this. Aslan answers, power is your main concern, isn’t it? He sets the money on fire over Hulya’s objections.
I’ve spent years trying to clean this dirty money, Aslan says, this money isn’t dirty… it’s bloody! This is blood money! From now on, no one in this family, or my future children, will live under this man’s curse. He accuses Hulya, you knew everything. Serap turned to you, and you kept quiet for 16 years.
Hulya tries to defend her actions, or inactions. I couldn’t believe her (Serap). I was a young woman myself. The man I loved was trustworthy. He was my family. He was also your father. I couldn’t believe her. If I believed, how could I live? I wouldn’t be able to raise you. Do you think I don’t feel sorry? There are pangs of conscience in my heart. [does she have a heart?] Don’t do this.
Aslan replies, I’m not going to do anything. You will. Or you won’t. It’s your decision. You kept this secret for 16 years, but you will get your chance to tell it at Sevdem’s anniversary party. You will stand up with a microphone and tell everyone that Yusuf Soykan was a dishonorable, shameless and disgusting rapist. You’ll tell everyone! Yusuf Soykan will be left in the past, is that clear?
Hulya asks, how can I say that? Aslan replies, if you do, then I know you are really trying to change. What if I can’t, Hulya asks. Aslan answers, if you can’t, that disgusting rapist is still your husband, and I’ll want nothing to do with you! I’ll share a table with my relatives, not that man’s wife! Everyone leaves the yard. Only Hulya and Leyla remain.
Cihan asks Ilyas, aren’t you going to say something? Ilyas doesn’t even look up from his phone. Cihan asks, aren't you going to blame me? You entrusted your only daughter to me and… I couldn’t protect her. Ilyas looks at Cihan. Cihan asks, aren’t you going to kill me, Kara Ilyas? Ilyas just stares at Cihan. Cihan nods, there’s no need. You know what I’m going to do. While my beautiful wife lived, no one saw her, no one listened to her. Before I join her, I’ll make sure everyone sees her. Then Hulya Soykan will get what she deserves. [Let’s hope.]
Leyla tells Hulya it wasn’t just Yusuf Soykan’s doing. Your silence ruined a young woman’s life. Then you founded Sevdem to give girls the gift of hope. Your hypocrisy disgusts me. Leyla faces her mother, you will take your claws off those little girls and you will leave Sevdem. You won’t ruin another girl’s life. Hulya calls for her car, she’s going to Sevdem.
Cihan gets in his car. A henchie sneaks him Serap’s gun. Cihan asks the man to keep him informed of the happenings at Ilyas’ house.
Ilyas is still in the room, replaying Serap’s message. Kiymet enters. You haven’t said a word in 3 days. At least, talk to me. Ilyas answers Serap, I love you so much, my daughter. He breaks down. Then he asks, how can I bring Yusuf Soykan, a dead man, back to life? How can I ease my pain, mother? He sobs. Kiymet puts her arm around him. Don’t worry, you are doing what you can. Your mourning will soon end. You’ll do what has to be done. And when you do, you’ll be calm.
AsDev leave the house. She’s coughing. She doesn’t look well. He gives her a hug. She feels a gun through his coat. She’s alarmed—you have a gun? Where are you going? Just to the marina, he replies, I’ll put this away in my office and come back, okay? He notes she’s not well and tells her to take her temperature and keep him posted.
Aslan tells his guys they are going to see Ilyas.
Devin suddenly has the urge to vomit. [which can only mean one thing, right?] She runs to the bathroom.
Nedret speaks with one of Bedri’s guys and thanks him for looking out for her son. [Yes, I wondered about Bedri. They didn’t show the fallout from the revelation.] Keep me informed, she says.
Asuman asks Nedret how Bedri is doing. He’s still furious, Nedret replies, he can’t accept that Ilyas is his father. Asuman says it will pass. He will come back to you soon. Asuman asks, how could you live with this secret for so long? We all face a singular trial in this world, Nedret answers, that was mine. I kept quiet and suffered in silence.
Nedret and Asuman hear Devin puking in the bathroom. Devin emerges and Nedret insists on taking her to the doctor.
Aslan arrives at Ilyas’ house. He tells Salih he wants to see Ilyas. Not a good time, Salih replies, he’s in mourning. He isn’t speaking and he doesn’t want to see anyone. He won’t have to speak, Aslan says, I’m the one who has something to say. Understand? Tell him Aslan is here. Kiymet is watching at a distance, and she signals to Salih. Salih asks for Aslan’s gun. Aslan takes the clip out of his gun, removes a bullet and pockets it. He replaces the clip and gives the gun to Isko.
Hulya speaks to someone at Sevdim. Not sure who he is. I’m sure you heard about Serap Koruzade, she says. This is a private family matter. I don’t want the press to discuss what happened. I assume you will respect our privacy. The man says of course.
Aslan enters Ilyas’ office and sits. He offers his condolences. Then he says, I had a father, a man whose name I never want to speak again. They say that children pay for their father’s sins. That man is no longer my father… but unfortunately… I’m still his son. That’s why I came to you, to pay my debt. Ilyas just sneers at him.
Aslan places his bullet on the desk and tells Ilyas, do what you have to do, but let’s not leave this room without agreeing on something. Ilyas looks at the bullet.
And we are out! What an episode!
Wow, dondi! What an amazing episode. It deserved--and received--an amazing recap!
I was impressed from the start at Devin's composure, and her ability to say just the right thing in spite of whatever emotions she may be feeling. I'm thinking especially of her words to Hulya near the episode's start. Hulya is ranting on about how crazy Serap is. Devin calmly asks, "is there anything you'd like to tell me? Something you can't tell Aslan but you can tell me?" As you say, dondi, Hulya continues her rant about Serap and the need to ignore her, but Devin doesn't confront Hulya, she just reminds her that she's always available to talk.
I was impressed, too, with Ilyas's response to an irate Bedri, telling his own men to stand down and let Bedri speak. I'm not sure whether Ilyas's response resulted from his feelings as Bedri's father or whether it was just machismo. Both, I think.
So Ilyas killed his own father? I was interested, dondi, in your saying that you've heard "No man can die until he experiences what he’s done" in a number of dizis. To some degree, it reminds me of the saying that one shouldn't pass judgment unless one has "walked a mile in the other person's shoes." But somehow that doesn't seem the same.
I was surprised that Bedri seems surprised when Ilyas tells him that "I'm your father." I thought Bedri already knew this. It certainly seemed that way in his responses to Nedret's frantic phone call.
Hmmm...how can the room with access to all the security cameras not have a telephone signal??
I'm somewhat unsure what Cihan is referring to when he asks Ilyas "aren't you going to kill me?" and then says, "There's no need, you know what I'm going to do." At first, I thought he was saying he was going to kill himself and "join my beautiful wife." But now I suspect he is planning to kill Hulya and then join Serap.
Am I right in thinking that Aslan intends for Ilyas to use the bullet to kill Hulya? In which case, will there be a race between Cihan and Ilyas to see who gets to her first?
And yes, I was happy to see Devin vomit, since, as you say, in telenovelas and dizis, it can mean only one thing if the person vomiting is a woman of childbearing age.
Again, thanks VERY much, dondi, for this marvellous recap!
Dondi, thank you for relaying every dark moment .
I watched up to the part where Cihan is at the cemetery . At that point , I went to bed knowing that Sehar killed herself. Yikes. I guess we should have known that this tragic figure would not survive. .The Turks like to pepper their dizis with cemetery scenes.
And sourfaced Hulya just keeps scheming.
Well, I guess we all knew that there was just too much happy birthday fun and games and grilling and singing . Gee, you manage to live 95 years, your whole family gathers for the big birthday vacation at a swanky hotel and then.....
Poor Turgut didn't get much of a vacation ...one bubble bath and fluffy robe and some tiny bottles of booze before having his quiet night of pampering interrupted by hot to trot Asumen . Then back on the job but unable to save Sehar from herself.
I've seen quite a few dizis , but none were as grim and vio!ent as this one. Has anyone tallied up deaths? Susan
I don't know what the actors are actually saying , so in the scene where Devin is frisking Aslan , I figured she was saying that old joke , " Is that a gun or...are you just happy to see me?". A little levity might have been good at that point. Susan
I'm making comments as I watch the show so I don't forget what struck me as interesting or anochchranistic. Hulya and Devin both in red. Solidarity between the 2 at the Birthday party.
Most everyone else was in black which ended up being fitting. Serap being told by Hulya "I won't let you tarnish the family name!". What a joke. Hulya claiming that she was young 16 years ago is also a joke. She must have been 50 or more because I think Cihan is currently 45 and Aslan is 39 or 40. Where were they when the rape occurred since it sure seems everyone lives under the same roof.
Was the violation at a different location and not their house. Sure is awful going on vacation with the soylan family. Admittedly she had a young daughter but she had the other brother (whose name escapes me as he died a few weeks back) waiting in the wings carrying a torch for her. I would have donated that money somewhere but I understood he felt it was blood money.
So Devin is throwing up. Id say she is pregnant, but fever does not generally go with it so it could be the flu. I'll read the recaps and other comments now.
Terrific recap, dondi. I'm with you 100% on your complete disdain for Hulya. I have always been extremely uncomfortable with controlling people. In fact, I'm not around them very long because I get away as fast as I can. Hulya has driven me nuts from Day 1.
Kiymet doesn't seem to have borne any of the blame for turning off Ilyas' phone. Not only did she risk her precious son's life by preventing Nedret's warning, but she may have caused his despair. Might Serap have just made an announcement at dinner but lived on had she reached her father when she called?
I didn't quite understand Aslan's obsession with Serap and Cihan. He wanted Turgut to get into their room and had him looking at the security cameras. Viewerville knew about the gun, but I don't get why Aslan was so suspicious.
Amen on "does she even have a heart". And disgusting is the perfect word for Hulya. IIRC Hulya was 18 when she began with him. Right there that could mean an attraction to very young girls.
I don't want Cihan to kill Hulya because he won't be able to come back from that.
I am enjoying the relationship between Devin and Nedret. Nedret is like the mother Devin wishes she always had.
How can that functionary at the charity prevent the news getting out about the big reveal at the birthday dinner. If any waiter had been in the process of serving dinner, I'm sure the news would be out.
Juanita, I believe that Bedri did not ever know about Ilyas being his father until Nedret spoke up. I think he thought that Ilyas was the one who "ruined" her, causing her to be cast out. But that the biological father he apparently killed some years ago was his bio dad.
I also think it was a big waste to burn all that money. Aren't there needy people in Turkey that could have benefitted?
Thanks, everyone, for the kind words and comments.
IIRC, Juanita, earlier in the dizi Ilyas explained to Aslan how he killed his father with his knife. This was while we waited for Kiymet to serve Aslan death beans for lunch.
"No man can die until he experiences what he’s done". Characters will also use a variation of the phrase to “curse” another. I take it as karma, what goes around, comes around.
“...how can the room with access to all the security cameras not have a telephone signal??” ITA.
“…what Cihan is referring to when he asks Ilyas "aren't you going to kill me?" Yes, I think Cihan intends to kill Hulya and then himself. I think this was understood between Cihan and Ilyas.
“Am I right in thinking that Aslan intends for Ilyas to use the bullet to kill Hulya?” Not necessarily for Hulya. But Aslan is taking responsibility for what his family did. We’ll have to wait to see what Ilyas will do. I’ve seen this in other dizis, notably in Embajador, when Sancar offered a man blood money (diya) or a gun to kill him (kisa) because the man’s son was killed. Sancar took responsibility even though he wasn’t the killer. I think this is in Sharia law. I hope I understood correctly.
“Gee, you manage to live 95 years, your whole family gathers for the big birthday vacation at a swanky hotel and then.....” I thought the same, Susan. Maybe this is “payback” for the stuff she did back in the day.
Yes, Kat, yes! “What a joke. Hulya claiming that she was young 16 years ago is also a joke.” I meant to comment on that. I listened to that twice to make sure. Hulya said, “bende genç bir kadınım.”
“Kiymet doesn't seem to have borne any of the blame for turning off Ilyas' phone.” I noted this, too, novelera.
“I didn't quite understand Aslan's obsession with Serap and Cihan.” I can’t blame Aslan for being suspicious. Serap was behind Leyla’s troubles and Cihan went to the dark side (Ilyas). It was clear by Serap’s behavior that she was a ticking time bomb.
“I don't want Cihan to kill Hulya because he won't be able to come back from that.” Me neither. I don’t want him to kill himself.
“I am enjoying the relationship between Devin and Nedret.” I like Nedret a lot.
“I also think it was a big waste to burn all that money. Aren't there needy people in Turkey that could have benefitted?” I thought so, too. But I guess Aslan thinks that money is cursed and he also wanted to stick it to Hulya.
Gracias, Dondi. Fantastic recap. Thanks especially for the words said as Cihan knelt before Serap's grave. I hadn't realized those words were spoken by Aslan.
Trying to guess about the culture of the Soykans and Koruzades. I agree Cihan plans to kill himself if he kills Hulya because there'd be no honor in killing Hulya and remaining alive. Plus, he's in misery and feels like dying.
As for Aslan, I'm guessing that bullet is for him and not for Hulya because she's a woman AND his mother so he won't kill her or offer her up to Ilyas. But I haven't figured out how Aslan plans to protect his family if he's dead.
I don't know how in blazes Hulya could stomach keeping that huge painting of Yusuf in the old house. Thinking about the place of women all over the world, especially years ago and even now in some countries, challenging a husband who rapes someone is a herculean feat. But Hulya didn't even try to help Serap over the past 16 years.
Niecie, I agree with what you say about Cihan, but I have a hard time believing that Aslan intends the bullet to be used by Ilyas to kill him (i.e., Aslan). As you say, he'd have a hard time protecting his family if he's dead. Moreover, there's also the strong possibility that Devin is pregnant. Would Aslan feel right depriving his child of a father? And depriving Devin of a husband she loves? Frankly, I was mystified when Aslan gave Ilyas the bullet, and I'm just as mystified now.
