El Clon Tuesday October 19: Summary for Discussion

Natalia pulls her hood up and walks away unnoticed leaving Diana standing behind Alejandro with her arms around his shoulders. He doesn’t feel ready for a relationship, he says. He needs time and patience. Diana offers him both and he is grateful.

Enrique talks about how hard it is for the addict to live with his frustration, pain and especially, rage. And rage makes him want to consume even more drugs. The therapist points out that:
Viver es lidiar con las emociones.
(Living means coping with one’s emotions.)
But that is precisely what the addict can’t do. So he numbs himself with drugs. But then he is left with a terrible fear.

And so Natalia tries to numb the pain and rage she feels after seeing Alej and Diana together. Pregnant or not, her fifteen minutes of abstinence are over and she is back with her Zombies. And she’s not willing to share with Fernando. After all, they bought the drugs with her money.

At Empresas Ferrer, another piece of Clara’s world is wrenched away when Lucas informs her that she has been demoted: she is now his secretary. But she shouldn’t worry -- someone else has already been chosen to take her place.

In the barrio, Gloria is happy with Ramón’s latest item: Alej and Diana left the gym holding hands.

When Karla hears how Hilda was nearly thrown out by security at Roberto’s office, she wants to forget the whole thing. But Hilda is undeterred. She calls the Del Valle home number, gets Lucia on the phone and announces that Roberto has a son by her daughter. Fortunately, Lucia is sitting on the couch because she, like so many before her in this story, faints dead away. It’s a good thing Consuelo is there to phone for help.

Roberto has rushed home and is now assuring Lucia that:
Esa historia del hijo es lo más vil que puede existir.
(That story about a son is the most despicable thing I ever heard./literally: that can exist.)
He doesn’t even know that impostor (farsante). He thinks he knows who the daughter is, but he never had anything to do with her. Lucia is the only one he loves.

At Casa Ferrer, Cris is showing Vicki her presents from Morocco. Sour Mama Rosa interrupts the smiling friends to ask what they’d like for lunch. Cris has a yen for Cuban food:
...un plato de lechón con arroz, frijoles y maduritos...
(... a serving of suckling pig with rice, beans and plantains).
Rosa informs Cris very prissily that they never eat pork – too much fat and cholesterol! She recites a politically correct list of pastas. Whatever you like, says Cris.

Rosa grouses to Marisa about Cris’s low tastes but Marisa cuts her short, advising her to join forces with Cris (unirse): Así no sufres tanto. That way you won’t suffer so much.

Natalia phones Marisa with the unsettling news: she is pregnant. She hangs up before Marisa can say anything. The nightmare is starting again, Marisa tells Rosa.

Lucas is no happier than Marisa about the pregnancy. He tells Enrique he feels as if he is living Natalia’s life rather than his own. And he wonders, as he feels his life is passing him by, how Jade is... (¿Cómo estará Jade?)

Not so great, it seems. She can’t understand why Allah let the Shadow cross her path just when she had gotten over Lucas. Allah must be testing her, she tells Zoraida.

No me gusta verte así cabizbajo, Dora tells Daniel.
(I don’t like to see you downcast like that)
Daniel is sad to think that Jade prefers the ‘original’ to him. Dora begs him to stop comparing himself to Lucas. She can’t wait for the hearing tomorrow: Finally the 'misunderstanding' will be cleared up. And Daniel is also looking forward to it. He hopes to hear that he is unrelated to Lucas Ferrer.

We see Natalia wearing a white tank top and walking alone. Then she is in black and walks with her Zombies toward the drug house. She is visibly pregnant. (I’m completely confused by the timing because she looks at least 5 or 6 months along.)

¿Quieres acabar con la vida de tu hijo? (Do you want to do away with your child’s life?) asks the desperate Marisa when Natalia shows up at Casa Ferrer. Natalia retreats to her room, chases Rosa away, and once alone she says: Quiero morir. (I want to die.)

While the women – Cris, Marisa and Rosa – are trying to decide what to do, Natalia runs out the door.

Natalia meets up with Paula. I don’t want to use anymore, says Natalia. Okay, I’ll take your share, says Paula. Natalia snatches back her drugs.

At the Del Valle home, Roberto and Andrea are gossiping about Albieri and Amalia when Lucia bursts in. She was so worried when she didn’t find Roberto at work and couldn’t reach him on his cell. Why she almost had a heart attack. But now all is well and she and Roberto are all kissy-face while Andrea giggles and hides behind a pillow. And Consuelo, whose back is turned to them but is always lurking and listening, sticks out her tongue in disgust.

Consuelo reports back to Skank headquarters that she is ready to give up. That woman never lets Roberto out of her sight. You quit and I’ll sue you says the litigious Granny Skank. And Karla con K continues to have misgivings:
¡Yo te dije que lo mejor era no habernos metido con esa gente!
(I told you it would have been better not to mess with those people!)

Albieri has just gotten home from the librería (bookstore), when the doorbell rings. It’s Daniel. He tells Albieri: If you say that I’m a clone in the hearing tomorrow, you’ll never see me again. I don’t want anyone calling me a clone – not even you!

Luisa excuses herself so they can talk. She picks up Albieri’s jacket and notices a paper sticking out of one of the books he just bought. It is a note in Albieri’s writing: Este libro es como tú, con mucho cariño, Albieri. (This book is like you, with much affection, A)

Albieri does his best to convince Daniel that being a clone is nothing shameful any more than being a test-tube baby is shameful. He is a human being like everyone else. And besides, it may not even be necessary to mention cloning tomorrow.

Daniel feels that Albieri doesn’t get it:
A veces me siento tanta rabia por ti. Me gustaría que sintieras lo que yo sufro...
(Sometimes I feel so much rage towards you. I’d like you to feel what I’m suffering…)

And yet…
… al mismo tiempo no puedo alejar de ti.
(… at the same time I can’t stay away from you.)

Albieri created him and he’s the only person that can give him his place in the world.

The Family Council has assembled once again at Mohamed’s house. Said has been tight-lipped about his decision and now everyone listens attentively when Alí says:
Said, tell us, will you marry Jade or cast her to the winds?

¡Me caso! he says smiling. (I’ll marry her). Rania’s face falls. Alí beams and he tells Jade she is fortunate, that Allah has been good to her.

No one is prepared for Jade’s response:
Pues yo no me caso. No me vuelvo a casar con Said.
(Well I’m not getting married. I’m not going to marry Said again.)

Now Rania and Amina exchange smug little smiles while Jadiya’s face is a mask of grief.

Alí is furious. He has done so much to make this marriage possible and now she is throwing it away. He curses her. Jade accepts the curses meekly. But she can’t take any more. She refuses to go on deceiving herself.

Then I don’t want you either, retorts Said bitterly – not in my house and not in my life. I am burying you, Jade, in front of all these witnesses. I’ll never take you back. And I curse the moment I fell in love with you, the jewels I gave you, the silks, all the gifts…

The Naz looks on, her face streaked with tears.

Jade deliberately removes her veil, her rings, her earrings. I’ll give back everything you gave me, she says. And I’ll leave with what I came with: my life.

She holds Jadiya’s tearful face in her hands, strokes her hair and says: Some day, you’ll understand.

Samira comes up to her aunt: Tía, toma esto. (Aunt, take this). She gives her the veil she just received from her father. They embrace warmly. Latifa is weeping.

Jade kisses Jadiya one more time and tells her she loves her.

Rania continues to look smug.

You shouldn’t let her go, Zoraida tells Alí. She doesn’t know anyone in this city. Let her go, says Alí. When she comes back, she’ll be tamer (más mansa). But now, let her go where the wind takes her.

Said watches miserably, smirky Rania clinging to his arm and leaning on his shoulder, as Jade closes the gate behind her and heads out alone into the darkened street.

Daniel is waiting for Albieri in his office. He notices a photo of Lucas and he takes it down and scowls at it.

Albieri, meanwhile, tells Luisa that he bought the book for her. She doesn’t believe him. After all, he already owns that book. She demands reassurance that he loves her and that he’s never been unfaithful to her. She is, she tells him, the only one he can trust and she urges him not to disappoint her. And now, she says, let’s have dinner with Daniel.

But Daniel is gone. And the photo of Lucas is on the floor, torn to pieces.

Daniel sits on some steps outside, in the dark. He is idly tossing a coin over and over.

At Mohamed’s house the postmortem is in progress. Alí feels betrayed by Jade’s ingratitude; Abdul says it was her destiny; Rania is relieved that Jade is gone. Samira is worried about her aunt and so is Amin who points out that she left empty-handed. The Naz says Alí shouldn’t have let her leave with nothing. Jadiya is sad that her mother had to leave her gold; she warns Rania that it will never belong to her. Rania murmurs to Amina that she can’t stand Jadiya. She would say more but Amina restrains her.

At Casa Ferrer, Lucas sits in his bedroom unable to sleep. He is anxious. He has an oppressive sensation in his chest, almost a pain, as if something is about to happen. Marisa, already in bed, thinks he’s nervous about tomorrow’s paternity hearing. He doesn’t think that’s it. He can’t stand the idea of another Lucas wandering about, living his life, taking over moments that belonged to him.

He decides to go for a drive.

Outside in the Miami night, Jade walks up to Daniel, still seated on the steps. She sits down beside him, laughs, takes his arm and kisses him.

Credits roll.

El Clon, Mon., October 18 - Summary for Discussion

As we begin the last two weeks of the novela, Clara has finally told Rogelio about Fer. The rest is pretty much same old, same old.

Nati tells Andrea that now she only feels pain when she snorts cocaine. She can't get the big high she got the first times she did it. 'Sácame de este infierno,' Get me out of this hell, she begs Andrea. Andrea promises to be there for her.

Alí, Latifa and Zoraida toast (with tea) to their success in rescuing Mohamed from Abdul's marriage plans for him. Mohamed comes in and tells them that Rania has called a family council (concejo de familia).

Rania tells Amina that she couldn't take anymore of Jade acting like she is first wife. She says that she should have called a council much earlier.

Jadiya tells Jade that Rania ruined everything when she married Said.

Abdul reams Said out a new one for his marital errors with lots of camel analogies: 'Dejaste que el camello montara al beduino,' You let the camel ride the Bedouin; 'Si dejas que el camello meta la cabeza en la tienda, entrará y la ocupará toda,' If you let the camel put its head in the tent, it will go in and take over the whole place.

Luisa catches Albieri out in another lie. She tells Anita that her intuition tells her that he is with another woman.

Albieri is with Amalia, of course. He tells her that therapeutic cloning can save children who would otherwise die of genetic defects. He says that man has always wanted to control nature. Albieri tells her that he had always been afraid of the instability of life. He sought to partner with God to find a logic to face life [I think he's referring to having gone to seminary] but then he found out that God was his idea. God was the need he had to control nature. So he turned to genetics. Amalia asks if Albieri is an atheist. He replies that if he believes in God, 'pero sólo porque quiero ocupar el puesto de él,' it is only because I want to occupy His place.

Roberto quizzes Clara about what is going on with the woman who claimed to be his mother in law and left notes on his car.

Lucía has a lot of anxiety about the false mother in law as well. Rosario assures her that the secretary in Roberto's office must have misunderstood what the woman said.

Andrea tells Nati that many people have conquered drug addiction and that the most important thing is to want to do it. She offers to take Nati to see Alej but Nati is afraid that Alej will be with Diana. Then Nati says that she needs a line. Andrea reminds her of her desire to stop taking drugs but Nati says that she is nervous. Andrea replies that people are always going to be nervous, stressed, depressed but drugs aren't the answer. Nati doesn't want to hear that and leaves.

Clara asks Enrique if he thinks that she will be fired because of Fer's involvement in the attempted robbery at the Ferrer house. Enrique doesn't think so but he says that he will talk to Lucas.

Enrique tells Lucas that he hopes Lucas doesn't blame Clara for what Fer did. Lucas replies that that he doesn't think what happened is Clara's fault anymore than what Nati did is his fault. But, he is worried that Clara's access to confidential information in a safe might be a problem if Fer tricked her into opening it. He wants to give her another position at the same salary but with less risk, as his secretary.

Clara still doesn't tell Rogelio what happened. She says that she was with a friend whose son was arrested. Rogelio puts his wallet on the coffee table and then goes upstairs with Clara leaving it there. No points for guessing what will happen.

Upstairs, Rogelio tells Clara that he feels like a burden to her. She assures him that she won't stand him up again and asks his forgiveness.

Fer steals the money out of Rogelio's wallet.

The folks are gathered for the family council and the children are sent out with the Naz. Before Zamira leaves, Mohamed tells her that he left a present for her in room. He says that she just wants her to be happy.

The Naz tells the children and we see acted out the story of the Sleeping Beauty (La princesa durmiendo) with the Naz as the Beauty, of course. No spindles in her version. The princess pricks her finger on a needle (aguja). Instead of the three fairies who give gifts to the newborn princess, we have Abdul as a good genie [he looks a lot like Santa Claus here]. He says that she will be the most beautiful and rich woman in the country. Zoraida, Jade and Latifa play wicked witches who put the curse (maldición) on the baby Naz. Of course, Prince Pablo kisses her and they live happily ever after.

In the other room, Alí tells the assembled group that he and Abdul as the oldest family members will act as judges. They will hear both sides and render a fair decision. Said speaks first. He says that his house is a living hell. The women are always complaining about each other. He says that he has thought about buying another house where he can live in peace. Rania pipes up and says that it isn't her fault and Jade gets into the act and they demonstrate just what Said is complaining about.

Rania says that she is Said's wife and the Koran says that she is entitled to a house. Said's house can never be hers while Jade is there. Jade protests that she just wants to take care of her daughter. Alí pronounces that Said has to decide whether to throw Jade to the wind or marry her. Abdul agrees with that decision.

Alí tells Said that he doesn't have to decide right away. When Abdul says that he can give his answer the next day, Alí protests that Said needs more time - two months - to make the decision. When Rania objects, Alí asks what are two months compared to a lifetime. Said agrees. Alí takes Jade aside and tells her the obvious - if she wants to stay with Said, she has two months to win his love back but if she leaves, the doors of his house will be closed to her forever.

Rogelio and Clara are in a bar. He tells her that he doesn't want to talk about Malicia anymore. Clara wants to tell him what happened with Malicia and Escobar but Rogelio says that he already knows about that. He reaches for his wallet to pay and, uh oh, no money. When Rogelio decides that it was a messenger who stole his money and promises to fire him, Clara can't let an innocent person take the blame. She tells him about Fer's drug habit and that it was because of that she she didn't go to Paris with Rogelio and that it was Fer who was arrested the previous evening. When Rogelio asks why Clara didn't tell him, she says that she couldn't. She feels like a failure as a woman and a mother. Rogelio tells her not to say that.

A month has gone by. Leo and Cristina have returned from their honeymoon. Marisa tells Leo that Nati has been gone for 10 days and they expect bad news. She leaves Leo with Lucas to tell him what has happened while he was away. Lucas tells him about the robbery and that Nati planned it. Even though he withdrew the charges, Lucas says that an investigation is continuing and if Nati is convicted, she will go to jail. He also tells Leo about how Fer's involvement makes him want to put Clara in a position with less access to confidential information. Leo agrees with whatever Lucas wants to do.

Paula has been released from prison and finds Nati. She says that Gustavo, the incompetent thief, is angry with her and will come after her when he gets out of prison. Nati tells Paula that she is pregnant. She says that she has to stop taking drugs or she'll lose the baby and she doesn't want to do that. Paula has some good dope and offers some to Nati but she refuses. She wants to go talk to Alej. [Is Nati really preggers? If so, is this Alej's child? When did they have sex after she lost the first baby?]

sKank1, aka, Hilda, has apparently waited a month but she shows up at Roberto's office again and this time, she gets to see him. She tells him that she is Karla (with a K)'s mother and Karla is the mother of his child. Roberto asks who Karla is. Hilda tells him that she has an attorney who will protect her grandchild's rights. Karla doesn't want to hurt his marriage so she would be happy to reach a private agreement where Roberto gives them $10 grand a month. Roberto throws her out of the office. See you in court, says Hilda. Roberto asks poor Clara how she could think that that witch was his mother in law.

Nati, who looks like she did the drugs, tells Paula that she always wanted a baby. She says that when she has the baby, everything will change. She will live in a house with Alej and be happy.

Alej tells Diana that he thought Nati would change but he no longer thinks so. He says that he has a hole in his heart. Diana hugs Alej and tells him that he is a special person and that Nati will regret what she has lost. Of course, this is when Nati comes up behind them.

The credits roll.

El Clon Friday October 15: Summary for Discussion

The Ferrers and Clara are intent on rescuing their children from the consequences of their behavior. Paula’s mother is not. In her first on-screen appearance, she makes it clear that she has no illusions left about her daughter. Paula, who has had more than one encounter with the law, stole her belongings, destroyed her marriage, left her in debt and shamed her in the community. She is ready to leave her in jail and walk away.

But Lucas, newer at being the parent of an addict, is still in protective father mode. He doesn’t want Natalia charged even if it means that the whole gang goes free. Carolina – who does indeed seem to be a lawyer -- explains that it’s not that simple. She’ll see what she can find out.

Mohamed and the Near-Wife Experience:
The party for Zuleica is beginning. Following Alí’s instructions, Latifa welcomes Zuleica with a gracious smile. The soon-to-be sisters exchange gifts. And then Alí makes his move. Ever so casually he asks the young woman:

¿Fuiste criado en el Líbano? (Were you raised in Lebanon?)
Yes, she was. Oh really? Then:

¿Conociste a Samia la hija del ebanista Emir?
(Did you know Samia, daughter of Emir, the cabinetmaker?).
Again, agreement from the unsuspecting Zuleica:

Sí, Samia la hija del ebanista Emir fue mi ama de leche!
(Yes, she was my wet nurse!)

Alí is faux-impactado:
¡Samia la hija del ebanista Emir fue la ama de leche de Mohamed! Mohamed y Zuleica tomaron de la misma leche y según el libro sagrado son hermanos. No se pueden casar!
(Samia was Mohamed’s wet nurse! M & Z drank the same milk and according to the holy book, they’re brother and sister. They can’t get married!)

Abdul is impactado de verdad. Call the Naz, he orders.

The Naz is in the bedroom sulking and painting on her Cruella Deville mouth. Latifa gets down on her knees and promises she will do anything the Naz wants…
-- Anything? asks the Naz – yes, anything!
… if she will back up the wet nurse story.

The Naz looks Abdul in the eye and confirms the story: That very same Samia nursed her brother!

Saved by the Naz!

The Zombies have a Get out of Jail Free Card:
At least for now, the children of privilege have their freedom. Marisa and Rosa wait outside the police station with Nati.

Lucas stays behind to talk to the detective. He is told that even if the family doesn’t press charges, the police have to investigate the incident. Carolina will be taking charge of both Natalia’s and Fernando’s cases.

Clara leaves with Fernando.

An officer brings Paula into the room. Where’s my mother? she asks. She was here, says the detective, but she left.

Back at Mohamed’s house, Amin is emboldened by the his father’s escape. He asks Tío Abdul if he can trade his esposa in Fez for Jadiya’s pretty friend Aime. Not hardly, says Abdul.

Mohamed keeps his promise: Freed from the threat of an unwanted marriage, he grants Samira the freedom to postpone wearing a veil until she feels she is ready to do so.

The Naz reminds Latifa that she owes her: Te lo voy a cobrar, Latifa!

And both Zoraida and Jadiya comfort poor bamboozled Zuleica with pious clichés.

At Empresas Ferrer Roberto gets an envelope with a message congratulating him on the birth of his first son, Roberto Jr. Someone’s playing a joke on me, he tells Carolina.

A bit later, the jokester herself, Grandma Skank, appears at Clara’s reception desk looking for Roberto: Tell him his suegra (mother-in-law) is here. But Roberto is so intent on a conversation about access to the DNA results in Leo’s case, that he waves Clara away. She leaves him a note.

At Dora’s apartment, the lawyer is also talking about the DNA results. They have been delivered to the judge. Everyone else will have to wait. As Daniel listens unobserved, the lawyer tries to prepare Dora for reality while bolstering her spirits. Even if Daniel is Lucas’s clone, she says, no one but Dora has the right to call herself his mother. She carried him for nine months. She gave birth to him. Neither Leo nor Lucas is his father in any meaningful sense of the word.

Daniel looks miserable.

Grandma Skank is back home and reports to Consuelo that Roberto was too busy to see her. She’ll go to his house if she has to.

Roberto finally notices the note Clara left him earlier: Tu suegra está aquí. (Your mother-in-law is here). Huh? But she lives in Atlanta. He calls home to find out if she’s visiting Miami. Nope, she’s not…

Lucas has been thinking. Now he wonders aloud whether it wouldn’t have been better to leave Natalia in jail. He tells Marisa:
Yo creo que es momento que Natalia asuma las consecuencias de sus actos.
(I think it’s time for N to assume the consequences of her acts.)

Marisa won’t listen. Natalia claims she did nothing and Marisa claims to believe her. But Lucas has reached a turning point. Stop lying to yourself, he tells her. And as for him, he is ready to live his life again.

Rosa encourages Nati to invite Alejandro to the house. She’ll bake his favorite cake.

Alej is at a table at Gloria’s with Vicki, Pedro and Diana. Pablo comes by and Alej, leaving his phone on the table, steps away with his friend and hears the news: Nati was arrested. Meanwhile, Nati calls him. Diana picks up, and offers to pass the call to Alej. No thanks, says the crestfallen Nati. I’ll try later.

Then Natalia calls her old friend Andrea and asks her to come to the house.

The situation at Said’s house is out of control! Somebody call a Sheik!
Jade is in her room brushing Jadiya’s hair when Rania bursts in. She knows Jade danced for Said and she is enraged:
No tengo que soportar una criada con infulas de esposa en mi casa!
(I don’t have to put up with a maid living in my house putting on airs of a real wife.)

Said comes upon the two trying to choke each other and he pulls them apart. Jadiya tells him it’s all Rania’s fault and Rania of course says otherwise. He is sick of all three of them, he tells them. He’s going to buy a house for himself and only see them for visits.

I won’t stand for the way I’m treated here, says Rania. I’m calling a sheik. I want a meeting of the family council!

Albieri and Luisa are still bickering about The Mendelson Affair. She calls him a liar (mentiroso). He tells her not to ask him anything if she doesn’t like his answers. And he starts to say: ¿Sabes qué, Luisa?.... (You know what, Luisa?...) but chooses not to complete the thought. He tells her he’s going to the Medical Board and leaves. Luisa plans to check on his story.

Anita is dying to tell Luisa about Amalia, but Julio convinces her to hold off -- at least until Leo’s paternity suit is settled.

Escobar is on his way out. He has to attend to some problems with Fernando.

Nati wants to know if Alej is seeing Diana. Andrea says no, but according to Pablo, Diana is determined to win him back. Alej still adores you, Andrea tells her friend. Don’t lose him! And how do you know? asks Nati a bit jealous at the idea of Alej confiding in Andrea. I know because I’m dating Pablo, says Andrea. And she adds: You know I’ve really missed you, being able to talk to you about stuff.

Diana gets to listen to Alej talk about Nati: how frustrated he is that Natalia hasn’t called or made any effort to see him. [I guess Diana forget to tell him about Nati’s earlier call.] How he is still deeply in love with Nati. And how he’s following his dream because of her encouragement.

Nati pours her heart out to Andrea:
She wants to go back to her old life. She wants to stop doing drugs. But she just can’t. That’s what rehab is for, says Andrea gently. But Nati ignores her and continues:
It started as a joke, a way to avoid reality, to escape problems. If she had foreseen it would end like this, she never would have started…

Escobar still hasn’t heard about the arrest. When he gets to Clara’s house, he finds Fernando alone, dishevelled and hostile. When Escobar reproaches him for acting like a bum, Fernando throws the Malicia affair back in his face. I was wrong, says Escobar. I was a fool. But I never meant to do harm to you or your mother.

But nothing Escobar is saying gets through to Fernando – not apologies, not explanations, not rebukes, not threats. Escobar gets right up in his face and Fernando responds by punching him in the jaw. Hard. So hard that Escobar falls to the floor.

El Clon Thursday October 14: Summary for Discussion

Lucas thinks fast! He steps on the gas, knocks over his assailant, and peels out of the driveway to call for help. The police arrive quickly -- amazingly quickly -- and the rest of the gang flees in a barrage of gunfire.

Lucas goes inside and finds Marisa and Rosa unharmed but stunned and tries to comfort them.

Alej is training hard for that last pre-title bout. Pablo thinks he should ask Diana to go with him but Alej has too much integrity to risk giving her false hopes. After all, he broke her heart once before.

Tío Abdul may need to borrow Amin’s telescope so he can get a better look at Gloria. She intercepts his lecherous gaze and scares him off by inviting him over for a beer.

Inside Mohamed’s house, Zoraida marvels at what a docile husband he has become.

And guess who’s coming to dinner? Alí arrives with the news that Abdul invited Zuleica to come over this evening. Latifa is incensed that she is expected to dress up and prepare a party for that odalisca. Trust me, says Alí; I know what I’m doing.

Three generations of sKanks are on parade. SG1 and SG2 are working over their plan to parlay SG3 into hard cash.

And the plan is beginning to emerge – Enrique finds a flyer stuck under the windshield of Roberto’s car. He reads:
El exitoso abogado Roberto del Valle acaba de tener un hijo en Pequeña Havana a cual no ha reconocido.
(The successful attorney Roberto del Valle just had a son in Little Havana and he hasn’t acknowledged him.)
Enrique chuckles appreciatively but Roberto doesn’t see the humor.

Carolina’s advice to her friend Clara: Tell Rogelio about Fernando!

At Salamandra, Yasmín reports back to Malicia with the info on Leonardo Ferrer. Malicia’s phony smile fades quickly when Yasmín leaves and Diana walks in. Malicia is unfazed by Diana’s news that Rogelio and Clara are back together. After all, she observes snidely, he should be with someone his own age.

Rogelio dreads telling Malicia it’s over between them. Piece of halvah, says Zein, who has clearly had a lot of practice in the art of the gentle let-down. And speaking of love, Rogelio wants to know if Zein has talked to Said again. No, not yet.

When Enrique and Roberto arrive at the office, they are shocked to hear about the assault at the Ferrer house the night before. Oh and here’s a letter that came for you, says Caro to Roberto.

Lucas brings news from the police to Casa Ferrer. They have caught one of the gang and that means it won’t be long before they get all of them.

Lucas, Daniel and Dora all have their DNA testing done.

Padre Andres tells Albieri that his sin has always been vanity. You are as vain as I am, retorts Albieri – It’s just that you’re vain about your virtues. When Andres reproaches him – again -- for not taking the human cost of his actions into account, Albieri – never one to shy from comparing himself to God -- likens cloning to the story of Eve’s creation. Who were Eve’s parents? Wasn’t she formed from a part of Adam’s body?

At the Clinic, Luisa takes a phone call from Albieri’s old colleague, Dr. Mendelson, and confirms that he wasn’t in Miami when Albieri used him as an alibi. When Albieri walks in, Luisa pounces and accuses him of lying. He doesn’t bother to deny it: A veces tengo que inventar cosas porque tú no me entiendes. (Sometimes I have to make up stories because you don’t understand me.) And when he walks away, Anita advises her friend to keep an eye on him. Follow him!

It is sooooooo sad. There truly is no honor among thieves! The Zombies rage because they’ve been stood up by the gang. ¡Nos robaron! (We wuz robbed!) But their frenzied tantrum is cut short by the arrival of the cops: the Zombies are under arrest!

Said hasn’t made up his mind about Jade. He believes that she wants to marry him but he knows she doesn’t love him. Love is born of a life together (El amor nace con convivencia), Jade begins… but the conversation is aborted when Rania, alerted by Amina the Spy, hurls herself between them like a live grenade. Said makes a hasty escape from the field of battle -- he has a ‘business’ lunch.

And the business of the lunch is Jade. If Said doesn’t love her, is he willing to give Zein a chance to woo her? Said promises he will have an answer on Monday.

The Naz is leading an impromptu exercise class for Samira, Jadiya and Zumaya in Latifa’s living room. Up to now, Latifa and Mohamed have kept their children from knowing about Mohamed’s folly, but the irate Naz spills the couscous. Amin and Samira are both distressed. They know how their mother feels about a second wife. But Samira is especially stricken because she feels it’s all her fault. She’ll wear a veil if it will keep her mother from suffering, she promises tearfully.

The gruesome trio are having their mugshots taken at the police station. Natalia shows no fear or remorse. Just scorn.

The police have contacted the residents of Casa Ferrer with the news that their assailants have been captured. Marisa and Rosa are reluctant to go to the station and identify the attackers but Lucas insists it is their duty to help the police. And besides, what if they arrested the wrong person?

When they get to the police station, they are told that all of those responsible have been arrested: those who planned the attack and those who carried it out. And unfortunately, the intellectual authors of the crime aren’t strangers to the family. And then they bring in Natalia.

Natalia denies everything.

Enrique to therapist: Drug addiction is an illness that destroys character. The addict morphs into a machine for consuming drugs.

Lucas can’t bear to proceed against his own child. He wants to withdraw the charges. The police explain that the gang identified her – and Fernando and Paula -- very clearly and that she provided them with the key to the house. Natalia just keeps on denying. She wails: ¡Mamá, sácame de aquí! (Mom, get me out of here!) And Marisa puts a protective arm around her. Lucas will call his lawyer.

Clara is telling Carolina about her conversation with Rogelio when she gets the call: the police have Fernando in custody. He is accused of involvement in the attack on the Casa Ferrer.

The break-up:
Rogelio doesn’t know Malicia had a chance to prepare her part ahead of time. In a well-rehearsed scene, she is convincing as the tough, classy dame who loves the guy enough to let him go.

Lucas is trying to reach Enrique but gets no answer. And he can’t get through to Carolina either. That policeman hates me, whines Natalia.

Malicia can’t leave Rogelio without loosing a poison dart in Clara’s direction: Clara hates me. Please don’t let that color our relationship. They agree: ¡Amigos para siempre!

The moment he leaves she says: ¡Ay! Casi no me lo quito de encima! (I thought I’d never get rid of him. Literally: Almost I don’t get him off me.) And she pulls a photo of Leo from an envelope. She’s not finished.

Rogelio calls Clara and wants to see her but she tells him it will have to wait until tomorrow. She has a very serious problem right now. And so she does. As she enters the police station, she meets the cold gazes of Lucas, Marisa and Rosa.

El Clon Tuesday October 12: Summary for Discussion

Capítulo 169: In which -- Lord help us -- the Zombies have a gun; Natalia tries to rob Alej – again; Clara and Rogelio make up while Malicia prepares to trade up; and the Not So Smart Pizza Caper is in progress at Casa Ferrer.

It is, in the end, Cristina who, with a gutsy mixture of common sense, kindness and charm defuses the Zombie crisis. She goes up to them, introduces herself, asks Andrea to put on some cool music and invites the Zombies to join the party.

Enrique is sad to see the kids in that condition – it challenges his sobriety. It’s a good thing Caro is there to look out for him.

Lucia tries to comfort Marisa, who, in spite of looking devastated, minimizes Natalia’s behavior as adolescent rebellion. She’s a good girl but she has some bad friends, she says. I understand, says Lucia.

When Lucia rejoins the party, Paula gives her a hard luck story about her sick mother who can’t afford to buy her medicine. She scams her out of $300. By the time Andrea and Pablo wise her up, it’s too late. And we see Fernando and Paula gloating over the money as they are on their way out the door. “Me robaron” laments Lucia. (They robbed me).

Rogelio is trying to talk to Malicia about Zein and Jade but she is tuning him out – is she thinking about her last victim or her next one?

Leo and Cris slip away together.

Daniel and Nati are at a table talking and Lucas watches them and frowns.

The day after the wedding…

Gloria tells Alej he’s been looking sad since he broke up with Natalia. I still love her and I miss her, he says. And I still feel as if I could have done more for her. I doubt she’s thinking about you, says Gloria.

Amin and Mohamed walk by. Amin asks his father if it’s true that he’s going to have a bride. (¿Es verdad que tú vas a tener una novia?)

Diana and Pablo are at the pool talking about witchy Malicia. Andrea stops by to chat. Pablo admits he’s not sure if he likes Andrea or if he’s just using her. She’d be good for you, says Diana.

You should have seen it mom, it was a disgrace, Dora tells Estela. Daniel defends Natalia. She feels alone and she’s like me, she feels she doesn’t belong there, he says. The doorbell sounds: It’s the lawyer bringing news: Leo has presented his paternity demand and the judge has ordered Dora and Daniel to provide DNA samples.

Lucas and Marisa are at the breakfast table as Rosa looks on. ¿Y Natalia desapareció? (So Natalia’s gone?) asks Lucas. Marisa answers:
Sí, claro, ya hizo su escándalo, nos humilló delante de todo el mundo, se va a perder por unos días.
(Yes, of course, now she’s made a scene, she humilliated us in front of everyone, she’s going to get lost for a few days).
Enrique phones to tell Lucas that the judge has ordered him to provide a sample of DNA.

Back at Dora’s apartment, her lawyer explains how a DNA sample is taken. Dora is sure the test will put the lie to the whole clone business. The lawyer reminds her that if Leo prevails, Dora’s name will be removed from Daniel’s birth certificate.

At Empresas Ferrer, Enrique advises Lucas to comply with the judicial order for DNA. If he doesn’t, it will seem like he has something to hide.

Caro confirms to Clara that Rogelio and Malicia are really a couple. Clara decides she needs to hear it from Rogelio and sets off to find him.

Rogelio is with Zein at Salamandra. Zein is also determined to put his romantic house in order and he sets off to find Said and get an answer from him about Jade.

Enter Clara. You should have at least had the decency to break up with me, she says angrily. Rogelio seems genuinely puzzled. You’re the one who ended everything, he says. You were just using me to make your husband jealous! (Me utilizaste para darle celos a tu marido!) Clara tells him the truth – how Malicia broke up her marriage, stole the apartment and the car and then kicked Escobar out to be with Rogelio. And if you don’t believe me, says Clara, ask Escobar. Clara, escúchame (listen to me), begins Rogelio… They look at each other. And they kiss.

At Said’s house:
Jade and Zoraida are chatting. Said me va a aceptar de vuelta (Said is going to take me back again), predicts Jade. [Poor Jade didn’t see Said’s memory bubble of Jade’s past betrayal.] Rania shows up complaining about Jadiya’s music. Jade invites her daughter and her friend to listen to the music in her room. She and Zoraida will continue their conversation downstairs.

Lucas is in his office with Enrique. He is going to follow his father’s example, he has decided. He’ll be there for Natalia but he is going to live his life. Says Enrique:
Hay que luchar por la vida, Lucas. La vida sigue.
(You have to fight for for your life, Lucas. Life goes on.)
Yes, agrees Lucas, and life passes by so rapidly.

Outside somewhere in Miami, the Princess of the Zombies gives the house keys to the thief for hire. His gang will attack at 10pm and then they’ll all meet up to split the loot. But right now the Zombies need a fix and have no money left. They decide to rob a clothing store.

Somewhere along the way, Fernando has acquired a gun. Once inside, he waves it threateningly and all three Zombies fan out through the store. Hey, you, fool, give me your money! says Natalia to someone with his back to her. He turns and gazes at her with sadness: It’s Alejandro. She runs out of the store and he follows her. What are you doing? he asks in despair. Do you want to be a criminal for the rest of your life?

Enrique to therapist: When your head is clear, you are filled with shame and guilt and you can’t look people in the eye. But when you are using, you turn into an animal…

Alej tries to confront Natalia with the reality of what she is involved in: Does she realize she committed armed robbery and the store probably has security cameras? He tells her he can’t be with her as long as she is using drugs. I want to stop, she insists, I want to be happy with you…

At the clinic, Albieri is phoning Amalia to arrange their next meeting. When he notices Luisa is watching, he ends the call quickly. He tells her he was talking to a patient. Luisa complains to Julio and Anita that Albieri is hiding something. Julio tells her that sometimes a man wants to leave his wife but can’t figure out a way to tell her. So he leaves hints and that way she can discover the truth for herself. If you really want to make it hard for Albieri, concludes the enigmatic Julio, don’t help him so much.

Zuleica meets Latifa at the mall, as agreed. She wants to know everything about “our” husband.

Coincidentally, Zumaya and the Naz are also at the mall. The Naz gets mad when she learns that Abdul chose a novia for Mohamed and no one consulted her.

Meanwhile at Mohamed’s place, Samira is refuting Zoraida’s contention that it’s a sin not to wear a veil. Samira is pointing to a text (which we know Zoraida can’t read) and quoting:
Es conveniente que la mujer use el velo pero no es obligatorio.
(It is advisable that a woman use a veil but it is not obligatory.)
At that moment Latifa comes back from the mall and with a smile announces:
Averigué todo lo que necesitamos. (I found out everything we needed.)
And Alí, also smiling, replies:
Ahora, sí Latifa, ahora lo podremos salvar de ese compromiso.
(Now, yes Latifa, now we will be able to save him from that engagement.)

Alejandro and Natalia continue their conversation beside the water. When was the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror? he asks. I don’t know, I’m afraid of seeing myself, she answers.

Alej goes off to get them some cold drinks and by the time he comes back, Natalia is gone.

When Clara gets back to the office, she is feeling pretty good about her talk with Rogelio: We made a good beginning, she says. And adds: I’d just love to see Malicia tearing her hair out when she finds out Rogelio and I are back together again.

Malicia, however, has other things on her mind. She has charged a Salamandra employee, Yasmin, with investigating Leo. Find out everything, she instructs her -- personal and professional. She is planning an event in his honor, she explains.

Marisa gets home and Rosa tells her Leo called. He is on his way to Morocco. Lucas is going out but Marisa is unwilling to join him. She doesn’t want to risk meeting anyone who witnessed her humilliation last night.

That night…

The Zombies are sitting on a ledge outside. Natalia is positively radiant with her imagined revenge. Ya están llegando a tu casa (They must be arriving at your house about now.) the others tell her.

A beat-up yellow pizza delivery car drives up to Casa Ferrer and a fat guy in a rumpled white shirt gets out. He holds out a “Smart Pizza” box. It’s for Señora Rosa, he tells the dubious guard. Then Pizza Guy thief pulls a gun and says: Don’t move or I’ll shoot! A second thief holds a gun to the guard’s back and they march the poor guy inside the house while a third thief is left as outside look-out.

Once inside, they knock out the guard and leave him sprawled on the floor.

Marisa is upstairs in bed and hears noises below. She pulls on a robe and starts downstairs to investigate. As she goes she calls out: Natalia, eres tú? Rosa? (Curiously, Marisa, in her nightclothes, is more modestly dressed than we have ever seen her.) The thieves scurry into hiding. She sees the guard on the floor. One of the thieves sneaks up behind her and says: Don’t move or I’ll kill you!

The second thief forces Rosa at gunpoint from her room. The thieves demand money. Marisa tells them there is no money in the house. Then where’s the safe? She takes them to it and they pull out a paper with the combination. Except it’s not the right combination. They don’t believe Marisa when she tells them she doesn’t have the code. You have until the count of three to tell me, begins head thief. One… The threat is interrupted by a ringing phone. Answer it, they tell her.

It’s Lucia calling to offer friendship, support, understanding, a trip to New York… and she simply won’t stop talking. Marisa finally says yes, we’ll talk about it later, and hangs up.

And at their home Lucia tells Roberto that Marisa sounded odd. And all she wanted to do was be a good friend. Some people are like that, says Roberto. They don’t like to accept help. And Marisa is very proud.

Marisa, meanwhile, is negotiating for her life. They want cash but they will take the jewelry she offers. And then once again, they want the code to the safe. I swear to you – I don’t know! On my daughter’s life, I don’t know! (hmmm…)

Lucas drives up and is ambushed by thief 3 pointing a gun at him. Hands up, he shouts. Don’t move or I’ll shoot!

El Clon, Mon., October 11 - Summary for Discussion

'¡Te odio, te voy a matar!'I hate you! I'm going to kill you! screams Nati. Rosa tries to keep Nati from attacking Marisa. 'Ya no eres mi hija,' You're not my daughter anymore,' says Marisa sadly.

Meanwhile, Cristina in a bright red dress (Leo has always liked her in red) comes into the house. Rosa drags Nati away. Cristina hesitantly approaches Marisa and asks if she is all right. Cristina tries to make Marisa feel better by saying that she had a nephew who abused drugs but got better and got on with his life. Marisa, her face wet with tears, excuses herself.

Marisa tries to fix her makeup while listening to Nati tell Rosa that Marisa blames her because she was never happy in her marriage. She says that her father blames her because he never married his Moroccan lover. In vain does Rosa assure Nati that her parents love her. Nati runs out of the house. Lucas tells Rosa to let her go.

Leo comes downstairs and tells Cristina that she fills his house with light. [At least someone is happy.]

Jade leads Said upstairs and ups the seduction ante with the sword dance. He goes to her but she holds him back with the sword saying that they aren't married. Said flashes back to when Jade told him that she had been with Lucas. Jade runs off thinking that she has conquered Said.

The gang at Mohamed's house plays with Munir. When Jadiya says that the Naz loves children, she agrees but starts off her usual rant by saying that it is just as well that she didn't have any children because everything she loves is taken away from her. Alí scolds her for rebelling against the will of Allah. The Naz replies that it isn't the will of Allah that is keeping her from getting married, it's her brothers and their odalisque wives.

Rania feels that Jade is up to no good at home and begs Amina to find a way to end the visit. Amina pretends that she has a headache and she refuses Jadiya's suggestion that Zoraida make a tea for her insisting that only lying down in her bed will help. Alí insists that Amina take Zoraida's tea. [Amina should have said that she was about to throw up.]

When Jadiya wants to go out bike riding, Zamira reminds her that she can't go out because she refuses to wear a veil. Jadiya thinks that a woman looks pretty in a veil and Zamira thinks that she looks like an extraterrestrial and is willing to stay inside forever rather than wear one.

Dora is getting ready to go to Cristina's wedding. She tells Estela that Cristina made her the matron of honor so that she would have to go to the ceremony. Daniel is going, too but he refuses to wear the suit Dora bought for him. He doesn't want to dress up like a penguin (a mí no me gusta vestirme de pingüino).

The guests are arriving. Leo tells Cristina that they should start the ceremony but Cristina replies that Dora isn't there yet. Leo is shocked that Dora was invited. Lucas asks Marisa (who has changed her dress) why she reacted that way to Nati. Marisa says that she just couldn't take the way Nati was treating her any more. Lucas says that he understands. The doorbell rings and Dora and Daniel arrive.

Lucas embraces Daniel and calls him his son.

The ceremony starts.

The sKanks parade their sKanette past Gloria's. Gloria admires the child and asks who he favors, the mother or the father. Hilda is quick to assert that with such a distinguished father, of course the baby favors him. But when Gloria asks who this illustrious father is, Hilda tells her to stay tuned. 'No es facil,' It's not easy, says Gloria and stalks off. Karla suggests that Hilda put the brakes on. They don't even know if Robert will
'va a dar la cara,' recongize the child, or not. But the cat, as it were, is already out of the bag. Ramoncito buys a paper for the sKanks and their picture is on the front page. Hilda tells Ramoncito, the chisme king, to do his thing and and she and Karla continue their promenade.

At the wedding reception, Enrique tells Albieri that his cloning achievement will change the concept of life that has been in existence up to now. Luisa is still interrogating Albieri about his every move.

Lucas finds Daniel in his room holding a guitar. Daniel asks if Lucas has a birthmark (lunar) on his back, too. Lucas says that he does. Daniel asks if Lucas' birthmark is cancerous. Lucas replies that his isn't but they can be. He tells Daniel that his mother died of cancer when he was very young. Leo comes in and tells Daniel how great it is that he interested in music and that if he wants lessons, Leo will pay. Of course, Lucas flashes back to Leo crushing his guitar hero dreams.

Albieri tells Father Andres that he is attracted to the intense admiration that Amalia feels for him. The Padre warns him to be careful - he has a jealous and possessive wife. If she finds out, who knows what she is capable of.

Adbul, Zumaya and Zuleica show up at Mohamed's place.

In a rare lapse of judgment, but presumably to further the plot, Anita blabs to Clara about how the Chump lost the apartment to Malicia. The Chump comes in and Anita makes herself scarce. Clara asks what the Chump has heard from his lawyer about the apartment. He lies. She shows him a demand from her neighbors to sell her condo and move out. Fer has stolen things, broken windows and insulted the neighbors. Barring him entry at the gate does not keep him out. Clara tells the Chump that her only hope is to live in Fernando's apartment.

Pablo is dressed up to go the Cristina's wedding reception with Malicia. He tries to get Alej to go without success. Alej tells Gloria that he thinks that maybe he could have done more for Nati. '¿Acaso eres médico, enfermero, hospital, santo, institución de caridad, o que?' By any chance are you a doctor, a nurse, a hospital, a saint, a charitable institution or what? asks Gloria. She tells him that he has to think of himself, concentrate on his dreams so that he can achieve what he has wanted so much.

Pablo calls Malicia and she uses his failure to call earlier as an excuse to end the relationship. She says that their styles of life are very different and she doesn't think their relationship is going anywhere. Malicia actually seems to regret having to put herself first. 'Perdon, pero primero está mi porvenir,' Forgive me, but my future comes first, Pablo, says she.

At the reception, Daniel asks Albieri if he was created by God like everyone else. Albieri assures him that he is no different than everyone else. Dora comes up and takes Daniel away.

Malicia and Rogelio arrive at the party. Cristina greets both of them affectionately. Malicia starts to gush to Leo how much she has admired his career. Vicki pulls Cristina away and asks if she is crazy to be nice to Malicia after all she had done to her. Cristina says that she doesn't hold grudges. Vicki warns her that Malicia wants everything that Cristina has.

Cristina calls all the single ladies together and tosses the bouquet. Malicia catches it. Pablo shows up at the party. He sees Malicia and Rogelio kissing and plants one on Andrea.

Alí is dispensing wisdom to Mohamed when all Mohamed wants is help. Amin comes in to say that Adbul and an Arab woman have arrived asking for her sick fiancée. Alí offers Mohamed a deal - he will get him out of his marriage problem if he allows Zamira to go out without a veil. Mohamed doesn't want to agree but he has no choice. Alí tells Mohamed that he destroyed his family in a minute but it is going to take some time and patience to put it back together.

Alí has Latifa pretend to accept Zuleica and agree to organize an engagement party for her in Miami. After Abdul and Zuleica leave, Alí tells Latifa that she has to invite Zuleica to have lunch in the mall and during lunch, she has to ask her one question that will solve everything. He tells Latifa what the question is but we don't hear. Alí asks Allah to take pity on him because for the sake of his nieces, he is likely to feel hell fire.

The three zombies crash the wedding reception. '¿Qué nos miran? ¿Tenemos algo en la cara?' What are you looking at?' they ask, 'Do we have something on our faces?

The credits roll.

El Clon, Fri., October 8 - Summary for Discussion

Zeín tells Said that he loves Jade and if Said doesn't want to marry her, he will.

Albieri has given Luisa the slip again. He is with Amalia. He tells her that the role of scientists is to break the ethical barriers of the society in which they live. He says that the greatest barrier is cross-species cloning. He claims that the centaurs and minotaurs of the ancient world were not myths but 'transgenic clones.' [Has he completely lost his mind? Are we heading for the classic mad scientist breakdown?]

Anita gets the Chump to tell her where Albieri went to have lunch.

More hypothetical questions- Amalia asks Albieri how we would feel if had created a human clone. He thinks, '¡Cuánta admiración siente por mí!' She admires me so much! He says, 'Me sentiría jugando a ser dios,' I would feel like I was playing God,' answers Albeiri. Anita has come into the restaurant.

Mohamed wakes up. [He got to miss the cramped seats, bad food and endless waiting of international travel. Oh wait, they flew on AeroNovela. In reality, transporting an unconscious person would cost tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars.] When he is told that he is in his own bed, he tells Latifa that he had a terrible nightmare. But it may not be over.

Abdul, Zumaya, Zuleica and her father have just landed in Miami. Zuleica is shocked at how Floridians dress. Abdul tells her that she hasn't seen anything yet. He advises them to cover their eyes (ojos tapados) during the drive. Zuleica covers Zumaya's eyes but Zumaya takes her hand away.

The lawyer comes to see Cristina, Vicki and Dora. She tells them that to prove that Leo and his wife who died 30 years ago are the parents of a 20 year old, Leo will have to prove that cloning has taken place (sí hubo una clonación) and the judge will have to decide who Daniel's parents are. She says that it is a unique case and depends on Daniel's testimony. Dora replies that Daniel doesn't want to go to court and hear all the idiocy about him being a clone.

Rosa calls Cristina to tell her that Marisa has chosen a pastel color (tono pastel)for the wedding. Cristina allows as how she doesn't like pastel colors. She would rather have something livelier like, fuschia. After the call, Rosa is all indignant at Cristina's interfering ways and wonders why Leo is getting married now. Marisa points out that it is Cristina's wedding and she should make the decisions. She also wishes that she could escape from reality like Leo is.

Rosa wonders if Nati will attend the wedding. Marisa hopes not. She is concerned that Nati and her ghastly friends will make a scene. Rosa tells Marisa that Nati is in her room with Paula. Paula and Nati have decided to rob the house the day after the wedding. But Paula isn't waiting. She steals what appears to be a medal on a ribbon from Nati's room. Nati wonders where Fer is.

Fer is stealing the radio out of his neighbor's car. Condo security calls Clara and tells her that they want to bar Fer from the complex. Clara tells Enrique that she can't face her neighbors. She is sure that she will be pressured into selling her condo.

Daniel's arrival at Lucas' office leaves everyone slack-jawed. Lucas makes his fierce face and asks why Daniel is there. Daniel replies that Leo invited him to see the business. Lucas sends him on at tour with Carolina. When Roberto asks Lucas about a report, Lucas replies that since he is on Leo's side, Roberto should discuss the report with the clone.

Anita has called Julio to the restaurant where Albieri is telling Amalia about his God delusions. I'm not sure if Anita thinks Albieri is two-timing Luisa or is blabbing about Daniel. Julio doesn't want to make a scene and takes Anita out of the restaurant.

Fer comes to the lab and asks to see the Chump. Luisa tells him that his father isn't there. Fer bums $30 off her. The Chump was there and Luisa says that Fer looks terrible and asks what is going on with him.

It's a happy family scene at Latifa's house. Alí shoos everyone out so that Mohamed and Latifa can talk. Latifa asks how Mohamed could do this to her. Mohamed replies that he didn't want to marry again. He doesn't want Zamira and Amin to know what happened. He tells Latifa that she saved him and they kiss.

Hilda is upset that Karla put 'father unknown' on the baby's birth certificate. [Uh, Karla, you don't need to wear the shower cap when you aren't in the delivery room anymore.] Karla wants to wait for DNA confirmation that the child is Roberto's. That is not Hilda's strategy. She has called a press conference, a makeup artist to gussy Karla up and bought a tiger print hospital gown for her to wear.

Meanwhile, back at Lucía's, Rosario asks permission to go visit Consuelo's niece in the hospital. Lucía asks if the girl is married. Rosario volunteers the information that the mother isn't married, the father is unknown and is believed to be a married man. Maybe Lucía thinks that she is living in 1810 as opposed to 2010 because she finds this information so shocking that she starts to hyperventilate and has to immediately call Roberto. Consuelo seems to be up to something but we don't know what it is.

Alí has no sooner told Zoraida how happy he is that everything turned out all right when the Fez fuddy duddies arrive. Alí tells Abdul that Mohamed is in the hospital and can't have any visitors but is all right. Alí takes Abdul et al to the shop and Zoraida tells Latifa and Mohamed the bad news.

Alí comes to see Jade. She tells him that Said doesn't love her like before and even though she has begged him and told him that it will be different, he won't marry her. Alí advises her that men don't like women who suffer. He tells her that men are conquered through their eyes (al hombre se le conquista por los ojos) women, through their ears (a al mujer por el oído).

Jade goes shopping and runs into Marisa and Lucía. After the exchange of pleasantries, Jade leaves and Marisa tells Lucía that she is sure that Jade is meeting Lucas.

Zeín tells Rogelio that he doesn't know why Said hasn't married Jade but if he's not going to do so, maybe there is a chance for him. Rogelio asks if Zeín thinks that he might be the reason for Said's failure to marry. Zeín doesn't know. He says that he will talk to Said in a few days.

Malicia and Diana come in. Diana gives Zeín his invitation to Cristina's wedding. Malicia is shocked that Cristina is marrying Leo and we get the first hint of some connection between Malicia and Leo since she first showed up in Miami and was looking at a magazine with a picture of Leo. When Zeín and Rogelio have left, Diana asks if Malicia is going to the wedding with Rogelio or Pablo. When she is alone, Malicia says that it is too bad about Pablo but she has to think of what benefits her the most [when has she not?] and Rogelio can give her so much more.

Alí tells Mohamed that he has until the weekend to figure out a way to get unengaged. Otherwise, he will have to marry since he gave his word.

Jadiya manages it so Jade is alone with Said to win him over. She maneuvers Rania and Amina into taking Munir to meet Tío Alí. She tells Jade what she had done and tells her to take advantage of it.

Karla has been tarted up. A reporter and photographer arrive and Hilda announces that her grandson is the only son and heir of Roberto del Valle, an executive in Empresa Ferrer.

Jade dazzles Said by dancing in a lime green outfit.

Mohamed tries to think of a way to get rid of Zuleica. Zamira comes and says that Abdul called and said that he was coming over with someone named Zuleica. Zamira wants to know who she is.

It's Leo's wedding day. Rosa is her gloomy self. Leo says that he is more nervous than when he married Lucas' mother. 'Sí, conociendo a la novia, yo también lo estaría,' Yes, says Rosa, knowing the bride, I would be, too. When Marisa comes in, Leo admires her dress. Rosa says, '¡Así es como se viste una verdadera dama!' That is how a real lady looks. Leo assures her that Cristina won't interfere in Rosa's kitchen. Rosa replies that she hopes not but all of Leo's previous girlfriends have thought that they knew more than she does. Marisa asks Lucas to talk to Nati.

Nati refuses to change out of her regular ugly clothes. Lucas tells her to shape up but it's obvious that she is not paying attention.

Just when we thought we could escape, we get a PSA from Enrique.

Nati comes down for the wedding and puts her feet on a chair.
'Mamá, ¿Por qué no finges que no me ves? Así como finges que no ves tantas cosas,' Mother, says Nati, why don't you pretend not to see me just like you pretend not to see so many things. Marisa asks for the 1000th time why Nati hates her so much. A nasty fight ensues in which Nati hits her mother and Marisa slaps her.
'
The credits roll.

El Clon Thursday October 7: Summary for Discussion

Capítulo 166: Mostly dark. Often violent. And very, very bitter.
La casa es un manicomio y mi papá se casa. (Our home is a madhouse and my father’s getting married). – Lucas

Operation Air Escape is proceeding apace:
Nazira and Samira try to contact Latifa in Fez for news about Mohamed. But the servants at Alí’s house are told to ignore the ringing phone. The conspirators -- Zoraida, Alí and Latifa -- are racing time to spirit the sleeping Mohamed out of the house before Abdul arrives. And they are right to hurry; for at that moment Abdul, Yaser and the would-be novia Zuleika are making their way to the house…

So Diana and Clara know each other, it seems. Diana is on Clara’s side (who wouldn’t be?) and has told her where Rogelio is having lunch today. Clara and Caro are going to the restaurant in the hopes of a casual meeting…

Enrique tells Lucas that he’s not referring him to another lawyer – he’s going to represent him himself. When Roberto joins them in Lucas’s office, Enrique says:
Quiero comunicarte que a partir de este momento, somos adversarios.
(I want to let you know that from this moment, we are on opposing sides.)
Not good news for Roberto.

Rogelio is seated alone, reading a French newspaper, when Clara and Caro spot him in the restaurant. Rats! Here comes Malicia and she’s kissing him! Caro tells her friend to stay cool and they take a table behind the couple. Malicia and Clara are positioned back to back but Caro and Rogelio can look right at each other. Rogelio is very aware of Clara– he can’t stop looking at her – even before Malicia says:
¿Te diste cuenta de quienes están detrás de nosotros?
(Did you notice who’s behind us?)

Whew! By the time Abdul, Yaser and Zuleika get to Alí’s house, the only trace left of Mohamed is the lingering scent of his panic. Zumaya explains that his doctor ordered the family to transport him home immediately. The increasingly cozy trio decide they will follow Mohamed to the Land of Haram. Oh dear.

Back in the restaurant, Clara seeks a moment’s refuge in the ladies’ room. But Malicia follows her and attacks: How’s Fernando? Is he still using drugs and getting in trouble? And Clara tells her:
Nos robaron, una trepadora de quinta que se obsesionó con el papá de Fernando y eso a él le afectó mucho – tú sabes, una de estas prostitutas que le gusta vivir de los demás.
(We were robbed by a low-life social climber who became obsessed with Fernando’s father; and that affected him a lot – you know, one of these prostitutes who like living off other people.)

Malicia pushes all of Clara’s buttons telling her she should go to Paris with a man like Rogelio -- he is so good in bed. And Clara fires back:
¡Usted es una trepadora, una zorra asquerosa, barata , inmunda!
(You are a social climber, a disgusting cheap whore, a filthy thing!)
And she slaps Malicia in the face as hard as she can. They stare at one another for a few seconds. Then Malicia slams her back. The battle escalates. The screams can be heard in the dining room. Caro and one of the waiters rush in to break up the fight.

Malicia runs back to Rogelio and tells him that Clara accused her of interfering with her reconciliation with Escobar and then attacked her for no reason. That doesn’t sound like Clara, says Rogelio.

Jade is standing outside the school waiting for Jadiya. Lucas comes up to her. She tells him to go away; she can’t risk being seen with him. He begs her to meet him at their apartment – after that, he promises, she won’t see him again. [Apparently no one has told Lucas that there are still 17 episodios left].

Jadiya comes out and Lucas slips away.

When Jade and Jadiya get back to Said’s house, Jadiya’s friends Aime and Jamil are waiting. Nice Rania smiles and says she invited them over. Jadiya thanks her sweetly and the kids go off together. Jade asks Mariam to pour her some tea. No, says Nasty Rania:
Yo no tengo que compartir el té contigo. Tú no eres esposa de Said.
(I don’t have to share tea with you. You’re not Said’s wife.)
When Jade threatens to tell Said how she is being treated, Rania tells her smugly that Said knows all about it and has agreed that she doesn’t have to share the table with Jade.

Jade retreats to her room, and throws herself on the bed. It’s all Lucas’s fault! Then she gets up again, puts on her veil and heads out the door.

We see Lucas waiting in the apartment.

When Said gets home, he asks after Jade and Jadiya. Jadiya is here, says Mariam, but Jade went out. The Naz joins him and delivers the Odaliscas Walking All Over You rant and needles him about bringing Jade back into the house and then treating her like a servant. He sings the Can’t Get Her Out of his Heart blues followed by a chorus of When she shows Real Remorse I’ll Marry her. The Naz rants the No Husband rant and threatens to resort to a temporary marriage.

Honestly, someone should put bells on those sisters. Rania slips in silently and sees that Said is back to his veil-fingering veil–sniffing ways. He’s at it again! she laments to Amina. And as usual, Amina tells her to pretend she doesn’t notice.

When Said asks Rania where Jade is, she says that she left without saying anything – just like she always does. She shouldn’t go out without asking my permission first, he says. When he leaves, Rania pouts:
Yo nunca salgo sin pedirte permiso antes.
(I never go out without asking your permission first).
[I guess the little jaunt to Fez doesn’t count.]

Who has suffered more?
Jade joins Lucas in the apartment. She’s not there to listen to him, she says, she’s there to tell him what she is suffering and how much she hates him. It is his fault she is living like a servant in Said’s house just to be close to her daughter. It is his fault that she lost Said and Zein. Every time she has a chance at happiness, he comes along, ruins things for her and then leaves again.

Lucas tells her how unhappy he is, how his life has been a series of losses. And now his daughter is killing herself. How can he abandon her? He accuses Jade of being captivated by the clone and trying to relive their love with him. But how could she not have feelings for a copy of him? she asks.

I’ve loved you my whole life, he says. You never had room for me in your life, she retorts. He takes her in his arms. She resists at first but then they kiss, the music swells… and his cell phone rings. It’s Marisa summoning him home for a new Natalia Crisis. She stole a car from Lucas’s collection (I assume we’re not talking Matchbox here) to get money for drugs. Some weird guy called the house… I’m on my way, says Lucas.

And we see the tears on Jade’s face as she walks away from the apartment.

¡Estás hecha un manojo de nervios! (You’re a bundle of nerves!) says Consuelo to Hilda in the hospital waiting room. Miss K is in labor.

Roberto is worried, but not about the sKanks. He tells Lucia that Enrique will be opposing counsel if Leo proceeds with his suit. Well Enrique is the one who should be worried, says his adoring wife. When the maid, Rosario, comes into the room, Lucia asks her why Consuelo didn’t come to work. She’s with her cousin Hilda – you remember, she was here to see you. Lucia doesn’t remember. Anyway, says Rosario, Hilda’s daughter is having her baby and Consuelo is with them.

And back in the maternity ward:
Between pushing and breathing and screaming, Karla tells the doctor her baby will be named “Roberto del Valle Junior”. Hilda and Consuelo watch through a window in the door and they are already counting their money. The only son of Roberto del Valle!

Lucas gets back to Casa Ferrer and Marisa gives him the scoop. Natalia stole his car and gave it to these guys. He has until 6pm to meet their demands. If not, they’ll strip (desvalijar) the car. And Natalia will pay them what she owes, one way or another.

Lucas grabs the address for the rendezvous and heads out alone. He is met by two scuzzballs including the scary drug guy who ‘kidnapped’ Natalia earlier. They want $5,000 for the car. Your daughter took my drugs and she owes me the money, says the scary drug guy. Lucas must think he has wandered onto the set of Caso Cerrado because he says he doesn’t have to give them anything. After all, the car doesn’t even belong to Natalia.
A debt is a debt, they say. And without even waiting for a verdict, they proceed to beat the snot out of him.

Enrique to therapist: I know I hurt a lot of people and I have no one to blame but myself. I’m the one who decided to start using drugs.

The Zombies formerly known as Natalia, Paula and Fernando and the professional thief they’ve hired are setting up the robbery of the Ferrer house. It should be next week when Natalia’s grandfather is on his honeymoon. And yes, she has the combination to his safe.

Alej is training but he is distracted. His boss gives him a talking-to and he regains his focus. No pierdas tu norte, muchacho! (Don’t lose your bearings, kid!)

I’m afraid it’s true. Pablo has been Maliciated. As he and Diana lounge by the pool he says he’s worried about Alejandro letting himself be deceived by Nati’s lies. He’s not the only one being taken for a ride, says Diana. She can’t believe he swallowed Malicia’s story about Paris. That woman can explain the inexplicable, says Diana. She should give classes in manipulation – she’d be a millionaire!

Natalia shows up at Gloria’s looking for Alej. Gloria shoos her away telling her she’s going to scare her customers. If I were your mother, she says, I’d smack you so hard I’d leave your bottom black and blue (te dejaría el trasero negro.)

Enrique to therapist: Drugs aren’t the illness. They are a symptom of the illness. And the illness is dependence.

A bloodied Lucas returns to Casa Ferrer.

And an ambulance delivers the sleeping Mohamed to his home in Miami. Zoraida and Alí exchange small, conspiratorial smiles but Latifa’s smile is joyful and open. The Naz is enraged that Latifa is happy when her brother is laid out on a stretcher. She is deaf to Alí’s reassurances that Mohamed is fine.

Jade is back at Said’s house. She tells him she can no longer tolerate living there on these terms. It was your choice, he says. I want to live with you and be loved by you like before, says Jade. I don’t want to make another mistake, he answers. Let me prove to you that I mean it, she begs. And as always Rania watches and listens. [Bells! The woman should be fitted with bells!]

Awww… Karla had a boy! She holds him and Consuelo snaps photos.

Cris is packing a few things to take with her to Casa Ferrer, including her white cat figurines. Vicki fears a clash of styles with the brujas. Cris isn’t concerned. She’s willing to teach them about decorating.

Dora arrives. Cris tells her the lawyer’s not there yet.

And at Empresas Ferrer, Enrique lets Leo know he’s going to be representing Lucas. Leo is fine with that.

Lucas limps in and says he managed to get the car back. Enrique tells them they need help to get through this ordeal with Natalia -- either individual therapy or a group. You’re right, agrees Lucas. Count me out, says Leo. I’m not the one with the drug problem. When Leo leaves, Lucas says ruefully:
La casa es un manicomio y mi papá se casa.
My home is a madhouse and my father’s getting married.

In the final scene, Said is sitting alone in a restaurant and Zein approaches him. He wants to know if Said is still in love with Jade.
