La Traicion, Episodes 4, 5 and 6
Episode 4
H: (smiling at Soledad) Are you sure?
S: Let’s go!
H: Run away together?
S: My love, I am ready to do anything to keep me from being separated from you.
H: Soledad, I don’t want to be separated from you either but this is isn’t a good idea.
S: Why? Do you have doubts about what you feel for me?
H: Nothing has ever more sure in my feelings but if we run away, we will do a lot of damage to your family and you will be humiliated publicly.
S: I love my parents but they don’t understand. They know that I went after you last night.
H: I know. Úrsula is in my house. That’s the reason I came to speak with them. Soledad, don’t cry.
S: You saw how my mother treated you when you tried to save her life? Believe me, she will never listen to you, never.
H: I will find a way to have her accept our relationship.
Lucas tells Soledad that he was listening when she was talking to Hugo. Soledad is alarmed that he heard her talking about running away but Lucas tells her that he was reassured by Hugo’s response. Lucas says that Hugo behaved decently and was concerned for Soledad as well as for him and Ester. Soledad says that Hugo is very different than the gossip. Lucas says that he will give Hugo a few days to speak to him and Ester and show his good intentions towards Soledad. Soledad is ecstatic. She says that she will send Hugo an invitation to her birthday party. That will be the perfect occasion. Lucas promises to what he can do about Soledad’s mother.
Guillermo comes home and looks for Helena. She startles him by appearing in a black veil and dress that she says are the latest style of the Italian court. Guillermo concludes correctly that she has blown her part of the money they got from Dr. Max on this outfit. He grabs the rest of the money and heads out the door to waste his share before Helena can.
Hugo is at dinner.
H: The stew [‘estofado’] you made is delicious, Úrsula. You are a very good cook.
Episode 6
Hugo and Soledad at the party
S: (coldly)What are you doing here?
H: I only wanted to wish you a happy birthday. I suppose your father told you about what happened this morning at my house. I owe you an explanation and that’s why I’m here. It was all a misunderstanding.
Ester sees that Hugo has come to the party and wants to confront him but Lucas tells her not to make a scandal. She tells Lucas to let go of her and heads off towards Hugo.
H: (to Soledad) Give me the opportunity to clear up what happened.
Ester: You have nothing to clear up here. Please have the courtesy to leave this party.
S: Mother!
Judge: Look who we have here! The hero who saved the life of Ester de Obragón!
E: Judge, please.
Judge: The whole city already knows that Hugo saved you from being run down by a carriage. [While the judge is speaking, Hugo is looking at Soledad. He says ‘I love you’ (‘te amo’) silently and winks at her. Super cute wink.]
H: Judge, please, how embarrassing.
Judge: I personally believe that Don Hugo deserves a round of applause. Don’t you think? (Everyone applauds.)
Guillermo and Elena are breaking into Hugo’s house. Guillermo says that he has everything under control when a dog comes and bites his leg. However, the diminutive duo deal with the dog and get into the house. Helena wants to leave. She says that she feels that something bad will happen. Guillermo says that he isn’t leaving empty handed after getting past the dog. He can’t believe that Helena, who digs up corpses in the cemetery, is afraid of Hugo de Medina. “From experience,” says Elena, “I say that one should be more afraid of the living than of the dead and Hugo de Medina is at the top of my list.”
At Soledad’s party, Ester tells Soledad that she isn’t going to listen to the falsehoods [‘embustes’] of this man. She tells Hugo that if he has any decency, he will leave. “Precisely because I have decency, I’m not leaving until she listens to what I have to say. Soledad tells her mother that it is better if she and Hugo go and talk in the garden. Ester starts to go after them but Lucas tells her that everyone is looking at them. Whether she likes it or not, she is going to have to accept that Hugo is here at the party.
Los Burke are in Hugo’s bedroom. They find the skull of Hugo’s father and scream in terror.
H: (smiling at Soledad) Are you sure?

Alcides asks Marina why Hugo keeps their father’s remains here. Marina stares in horror at the skull. Alcides says that his poor brother must be crazy. Marina tells Alcides to leave the room. Alcides tells her that he is concerned about his brother’s mental health. He says that they have to help Hugo. He asks Marina to keep him informed about everything that Hugo does. It will be their secret. Marina says that she can’t do that. Alcides tries to give Marina some money but she refuses and asks Alcides not to offend her. Alcides stuffs the money into her apron and leaves. “I’ve almost got you, Hugo!” he laughs. Ursula sees Alcides leaving Hugo’s bedroom.
Arturo has shot Herman in the hand. Once again Arturo demands that Fabio tell him the truth or he’ll shoot him and not in the hand. Beatriz gets between them. She says that she can’t let him do something that would put him in jail and then what would she do? Arturo decides not to kill Fabio.
Lucas goes to see Ester. She asks where Soledad is. Lucas says that she is in her bedroom. Lucas says that maybe Hugo isn’t as bad as they thought he was. Ester is outraged. Lucas says that he overheard them talking. Ester says that she doesn’t care what he overheard. Soledad is leaving this house because Ester doesn’t want her near that libertine. Lucas angrily asks why Ester is so dead set against Hugo. Ester tells him not to dare speak to her that way. Lucas says that this time they aren’t going to do things her way. Soledad isn’t going anywhere.
Hugo and Boris in the carriage-

H: The envy and ignorance of people, Boris. I have acquired the reputation as a womanizer that I don’t deserve. They have heard that my romances end badly and they don’t know why.
B: You hadn’t wanted to formalize your relationships with other women in order not to make them suffer because of your illness.
H: Catalepsy has taken away my right to be happy.
B: Until Soledad came along.
H: In this case, I am incapable of leaving her. (He looks at her handkerchief.)
B: It won’t be easy to get rid of your reputation. Everyone is talking about Beatriz de Linares’ fantasy of romance.
H: The only thing I haven’t been able to defeat in my life is my illness. The rest of the universe is within my grasp. Nothing and no one will get in the way of the love Soledad and I have for each other. [Uh oh. When characters on novelas says things like that, they are about to lose everything and Hugo will be no exception.]Arturo has shot Herman in the hand. Once again Arturo demands that Fabio tell him the truth or he’ll shoot him and not in the hand. Beatriz gets between them. Ú: Thank you sir. It is an old recipe of my grandmother and Soledad’s favorite dish.
H: (smiling) Then you should make it often.
Hugo leaves. Boris congratulates Úrsula on starting off on the right foot. He tells Marina that she should get some recipes from Úrsula. Marina leaves in a huff. Úrsula asks Boris if Marina has told him what happened yesterday afternoon. Boris says no. Úrsula tells Boris that she thought no one was supposed to go into Hugo’s bedroom but she saw Alcides coming out of it.
In the taverna, Alcides asks Guillermo if Hugo ever seemed to be involved in witchcraft [brujería]. Guillermo says that he wasn’t aware of any witchcraft but Hugo is capable of anything. Alcides says that he has a business proposition for Guillermo for which he will be paid very well.
“Why didn’t you tell me that Alcides was in Hugo’s bedroom?” Boris asks Marina angrily. Marina swears that it wasn’t her fault. She was instructing Úrsula and she saw that the door was open. “Your duty is watch out for Don Hugo!” says Boris angrily. Marina says that there is a skull in Hugo’s room that Alcides said is his father’s. Boris tells her not to stick her nose where it doesn’t belong. He says that she has committed a very serious error and will have to assume the consequences.
In his room, Hugo is daydreaming about Soledad. He recalls their night of passion and smells her handkerchief. “I have never felt before what I am feeling now. No, I have never felt this before for anyone. (He gets up and speaks to his father’s skull.) “This time you will not prevent me from being happy… I will make my own destiny.” He kisses the cross he wears. “I swear it.”
In her bedroom in the Obragón house, Soledad is writing a note to Hugo: “Things are turning around for us. Thanks to my father, you have a few more days to speak to them. I know that when they understand the truth, they will change the way they think about you. The best moment would be during my birthday party that will be tomorrow in the club in the City. I will wait for you there, counting on your presence for an unforgettable night. I love you. Soledad.” She kisses the letter and starts to fold it up. Ester comes in, grabs it out of her hand, reads it and rips it into little pieces.
Ester: You are very wrong, Soledad. I have let you stay here until your birthday but I will not permit you to see that man again… least of all during the party at the club.
Soledad: Why are you so afraid to get to know him?
E: Because I know what kind of man he is.
S: You don’t know! Hugo is a marvelous person and I love him.
E: Don’t be ridiculous. What do you know about love? I will not permit you to ruin the dignity of this family over a stupid whim for a bad man.
S: That's what matters to you, your image. And me, my happiness doesn’t interest you.
E: No, it doesn’t interest me while you continue to be stubborn about the wrong man. Get this into your head - you will never be with Hugo de Medina! Never!
S: I don’t think you understand me, mama. You will never be able to separate me from him.
E: Last night… did something happen between you? (she looks to be about to cry.)
S: (lowers her head) Please...
E: You gave yourself to that man?
Soledad lowers her eyes.
In the taverna, Guillermo pretends to be shocked that Alcides wants him to break into Hugo’s house. Alcides tells him not to act like an imbecile. Alcides says that he knows Guillermo was fired for stealing. Alcides says that it shouldn’t be too hard to break in and get what he wants. Guillermo says that everyone knows Hugo’s ability with weapons. His wife would be a widow and his life is worth a lot of money. Alcides replies that he already said that he would pay Guillermo a lot of money. Guillermo doesn’t think Alcides has that kind of money. Alcides goes and gets some money from Arturo and brings it to Guillermo promising him double if he gets what Alcides wants. Guillermo leaves. Arturo sits down with Alcides. Alcides tells him that he has found the way to get rid of his brother.
Ester is crying.
E: How could you, Soledad! Betray our confidence. What example have we given you?
S: I’m sorry but understand me, what Hugo and I have between us is beautiful and dignified.
E: There is no dignity when you go secretly rolling around with a man you aren’t engaged to.
S: Because you don’t want to accept him but we love each other.
E: This isn’t love. It’s sin.
S: Whatever! But I don’t have anything to apologize for or be ashamed of.
Ester is about to hit Soledad when Lucas stops her, “Leave her alone,” he says.
E: Don’t defend her. Your daughter has been deceiving us and has shamed us. She gave herself to Hugo de Medina. The daughter that you defend so much.
Ester leaves crying. Lucas looks at Soledad with sadness.
Alcides tells Arturo that he has discovered that Hugo keeps their father’s skull and probably uses it in occult practices. “Witchcraft?” says Arturo. Alcides says that he has heard that such people have bones and altars to invoke the devil. Arturo isn’t convinced and hopes Alcides’ suspicions are true. “When I have the proof,” says Alcides, “I will denounce him to the authorities and Soledad will know the true face of my little brother [‘hermanito’] and despise him like a dog. [We learn much later that Alcides is three minutes older than Hugo.]
Hugo and Boris:
H: In these times of such ignorance, if people knew that I had the remains of my father, they would think horrible things about me but I keep them to remind me of the destiny to which I’m tied.
B: It must have been terrible what you saw your father suffer at your young age.
H: (looking out the window at the rain) We dug up his body a month after his supposed death in spite of the fact that mama had insisted and repeated since the day of the burial that he had been alive, but nobody paid any attention. (Flashback to Hugo’s father’s casket being opened in front of his mother and the twin boys.) The poor woman had lost her reason long before precisely because she had to keep the secret of my father’s catalepsy attacks. (Hugo sighs) Then a doctor suggested that she confront her fear, that she look at his corpse. But it was the worst possible idea. What we saw that day was horrible. (Hugo hears his mother screaming, “They didn’t believe me! Curse all of you! Forgive me! They wouldn’t listen!”) The body of my father was face down in the coffin with the lid scratched and stained with dried blood. When the poor man woke up, he surely made futile efforts to open the lid of the coffin. He screamed and begged for help but no one did anything, no one did anything to save him so little by little he ran out of air until the inevitable happened.
B: (looking around nervously) Don Hugo...
H: That day was truly horrible Boris! His hands were like claws and his face was contorted in agony as if he was giving a last scream for help.
B: Don’t invoke death, señor!
H: Please leave me alone. (Boris leaves.)
Hugo is alone with his ghosts. He holds Soledad’s handkerchief to his face.
Guillermo is in the taverna stuffing money into the ample bosom of Margot, the tavern wench. “I’ve come to make a deposit to my savings account,” he says. Helena comes in and fights with Guillermo and Margot and she drags Guillermo out of the tavern.
Hugo is on his way out the next morning. He tells Boris to get the carriage. Boris stops him and says that Marina has something important to tell him. Marina says that yesterday when Hugo was out, Alcides was waiting for Hugo and when she was distracted, Alcides got into his bedroom. “In my room?” says Hugo, “but you know that no one can enter my room, least of all my brother.” Marina says that she is sorry. “I don’t want apologies!” says Hugo angrily, “You can’t imagine the consequences of your negligence.” He turns and goes back to his room telling Boris not to let anyone interrupt him. He wants to rest for a while.
Marina tells Úrsula that she hopes she is happy. Úrsula asks why. Marina says that Hugo was furious when she told him about Alcides being in his room. Úrsula says that she didn’t intend to harm Marina. Marina responds that since she came to the house, the only thing Úrsula has wanted is to harm Marina. Marina also accuses Úrsula of going after Boris. Úrsula says that she isn’t doing what Marina accuses her of. Marina says that this is war and she isn’t going to stand around doing nothing.
In the Obragón house, Ester asks Lucas where he is going. Lucas says that he wants to give Soledad a present for her birthday. Ester asks if he wants to reward Soledad. She says that Soledad is behaving this way because he spoiled her. Lucas says that Ester is taking this too far. Ester says that she will take it upon herself to speak to Hugo. Even if it hurts her soul, she will make Hugo marry Soledad.
Fabio comes to see Beatriz. She thanks him for not opening his mouth in front of her brother. If he had done so, they would have been in serious trouble. Fabio says that Beatriz should forget about Soledad because from now on, Fabio is going to obey Arturo. Beatriz offers him money and jewels but Fabio says that he isn’t interested in anything of hers. He is going to kill Hugo de Medina this very day.
Ester is about to get in the carriage when Lucas comes out. Lucas tells Ester that as the head of the family, it is his obligation to speak with this man to oblige him to make amends for the dishonor that he caused. At this moment, Alcides arrives with his usual bouquet of flowers. “Dishonor?” says Alcides, “what dishonor?”
Guillermo and Helena are arguing about spending all the money they got for the cadaver they brought to Dr. Max. Guillermo astonishes Helena by producing his own money that he got for a job.
Lucas starts to tell Alcides what happened with Soledad when Ester interrupts thanking him for his concern and saying that this matter only concerns the family. Alcides asks Ester and Lucas to be honest with him. He says that he thinks he knows what this is about – his brother abused Soledad?
Soledad discovers that she her mother has locked her in her room. She calls for her father and bangs on the door.
Ester and Lucas are silent but Alcides can hear Soledad demanding that the door be opened. Alcides says that it is shameful that his own brother did such a thing to Soledad. Ester says that Alcides’ brother took advantage of the innocence of their daughter. Alcides says that he doesn’t want to make things worse but he knows his brother and he doubts that he will assume responsibility. Ester says that they will see about that. Alcides says that he will marry Soledad to free them from the shame. Lucas asks Alcides if he is sure about what he is saying? “Completely,” says Alcides, “my love for Soledad is strong enough for anything. Yes, I am ready to marry her even after what happened.”
Soledad is unsuccessful in picking the lock of her door. She opens the window and yells that her mother can’t keep her locked up for the rest of her life. Ester says yes that she can and to stop yelling. Ester tells Alcides that after what happened they can’t take the risk that she will do some other crazy thing. Alcides says that he understands. Inside her room, Soledad says that she will take the hard way. She jumps out the window, runs up to a horse and tries to do something [no way she was going to ride a horse in that gown]. The horse rears and Soledad hits her head and falls down unconscious.
At the same moment, Hugo sits up in his bed clutching his head and gasping in pain. Boris comes in.
B: How do you feel, señor?
H: So so. This is because my brother was here yesterday.
B: I’m very sorry that you are so upset, señor. Your water.
H: I have a feeling that I’m going to have another attack. If that’s the case, I want the medicines to be ready, please.
B: Doctor Max hasn’t send the medicines that you had him order from Germany.
H: Please go get them yourself, Boris. If I have an attack, they are the only thing that helps me to bear it.
B: We also have the thermal chamber [‘urna térmica’] treatment.
H: No, I don’t trust that cursed apparatus.
B: I’ve put you in it before.
H: Yes, but one bad calculation and I’ll never wake up.
B: You know how careful I am.
H: I need to recover. I need to go and speak with Soledad’s parents to resolve this. (Hugo tries to stand up but he can’t.) Please prepare the smelling salts for nausea.
Boris: Lie down again…
H: Please just get them ready. (Boris leaves. Hugo lies down.)
Alcides carries Soledad into her room and lays her on the bed.

Ester is about to hit Soledad when Lucas stops her, “Leave her alone,” he says.
E: Don’t defend her. Your daughter has been deceiving us and has shamed us. She gave herself to Hugo de Medina. The daughter that you defend so much.
Ester leaves crying. Lucas looks at Soledad with sadness.
Alcides tells Arturo that he has discovered that Hugo keeps their father’s skull and probably uses it in occult practices. “Witchcraft?” says Arturo. Alcides says that he has heard that such people have bones and altars to invoke the devil. Arturo isn’t convinced and hopes Alcides’ suspicions are true. “When I have the proof,” says Alcides, “I will denounce him to the authorities and Soledad will know the true face of my little brother [‘hermanito’] and despise him like a dog. [We learn much later that Alcides is three minutes older than Hugo.]
Hugo and Boris:
H: In these times of such ignorance, if people knew that I had the remains of my father, they would think horrible things about me but I keep them to remind me of the destiny to which I’m tied.
B: It must have been terrible what you saw your father suffer at your young age.
H: (looking out the window at the rain) We dug up his body a month after his supposed death in spite of the fact that mama had insisted and repeated since the day of the burial that he had been alive, but nobody paid any attention. (Flashback to Hugo’s father’s casket being opened in front of his mother and the twin boys.) The poor woman had lost her reason long before precisely because she had to keep the secret of my father’s catalepsy attacks. (Hugo sighs) Then a doctor suggested that she confront her fear, that she look at his corpse. But it was the worst possible idea. What we saw that day was horrible. (Hugo hears his mother screaming, “They didn’t believe me! Curse all of you! Forgive me! They wouldn’t listen!”) The body of my father was face down in the coffin with the lid scratched and stained with dried blood. When the poor man woke up, he surely made futile efforts to open the lid of the coffin. He screamed and begged for help but no one did anything, no one did anything to save him so little by little he ran out of air until the inevitable happened.
B: (looking around nervously) Don Hugo...
H: That day was truly horrible Boris! His hands were like claws and his face was contorted in agony as if he was giving a last scream for help.
B: Don’t invoke death, señor!
H: Please leave me alone. (Boris leaves.)
Hugo is alone with his ghosts. He holds Soledad’s handkerchief to his face.
Guillermo is in the taverna stuffing money into the ample bosom of Margot, the tavern wench. “I’ve come to make a deposit to my savings account,” he says. Helena comes in and fights with Guillermo and Margot and she drags Guillermo out of the tavern.
Hugo is on his way out the next morning. He tells Boris to get the carriage. Boris stops him and says that Marina has something important to tell him. Marina says that yesterday when Hugo was out, Alcides was waiting for Hugo and when she was distracted, Alcides got into his bedroom. “In my room?” says Hugo, “but you know that no one can enter my room, least of all my brother.” Marina says that she is sorry. “I don’t want apologies!” says Hugo angrily, “You can’t imagine the consequences of your negligence.” He turns and goes back to his room telling Boris not to let anyone interrupt him. He wants to rest for a while.
Marina tells Úrsula that she hopes she is happy. Úrsula asks why. Marina says that Hugo was furious when she told him about Alcides being in his room. Úrsula says that she didn’t intend to harm Marina. Marina responds that since she came to the house, the only thing Úrsula has wanted is to harm Marina. Marina also accuses Úrsula of going after Boris. Úrsula says that she isn’t doing what Marina accuses her of. Marina says that this is war and she isn’t going to stand around doing nothing.
In the Obragón house, Ester asks Lucas where he is going. Lucas says that he wants to give Soledad a present for her birthday. Ester asks if he wants to reward Soledad. She says that Soledad is behaving this way because he spoiled her. Lucas says that Ester is taking this too far. Ester says that she will take it upon herself to speak to Hugo. Even if it hurts her soul, she will make Hugo marry Soledad.
Fabio comes to see Beatriz. She thanks him for not opening his mouth in front of her brother. If he had done so, they would have been in serious trouble. Fabio says that Beatriz should forget about Soledad because from now on, Fabio is going to obey Arturo. Beatriz offers him money and jewels but Fabio says that he isn’t interested in anything of hers. He is going to kill Hugo de Medina this very day.
Ester is about to get in the carriage when Lucas comes out. Lucas tells Ester that as the head of the family, it is his obligation to speak with this man to oblige him to make amends for the dishonor that he caused. At this moment, Alcides arrives with his usual bouquet of flowers. “Dishonor?” says Alcides, “what dishonor?”
Guillermo and Helena are arguing about spending all the money they got for the cadaver they brought to Dr. Max. Guillermo astonishes Helena by producing his own money that he got for a job.
Lucas starts to tell Alcides what happened with Soledad when Ester interrupts thanking him for his concern and saying that this matter only concerns the family. Alcides asks Ester and Lucas to be honest with him. He says that he thinks he knows what this is about – his brother abused Soledad?
Soledad discovers that she her mother has locked her in her room. She calls for her father and bangs on the door.
Ester and Lucas are silent but Alcides can hear Soledad demanding that the door be opened. Alcides says that it is shameful that his own brother did such a thing to Soledad. Ester says that Alcides’ brother took advantage of the innocence of their daughter. Alcides says that he doesn’t want to make things worse but he knows his brother and he doubts that he will assume responsibility. Ester says that they will see about that. Alcides says that he will marry Soledad to free them from the shame. Lucas asks Alcides if he is sure about what he is saying? “Completely,” says Alcides, “my love for Soledad is strong enough for anything. Yes, I am ready to marry her even after what happened.”
Soledad is unsuccessful in picking the lock of her door. She opens the window and yells that her mother can’t keep her locked up for the rest of her life. Ester says yes that she can and to stop yelling. Ester tells Alcides that after what happened they can’t take the risk that she will do some other crazy thing. Alcides says that he understands. Inside her room, Soledad says that she will take the hard way. She jumps out the window, runs up to a horse and tries to do something [no way she was going to ride a horse in that gown]. The horse rears and Soledad hits her head and falls down unconscious.
At the same moment, Hugo sits up in his bed clutching his head and gasping in pain. Boris comes in.
B: How do you feel, señor?
H: So so. This is because my brother was here yesterday.
B: I’m very sorry that you are so upset, señor. Your water.
H: I have a feeling that I’m going to have another attack. If that’s the case, I want the medicines to be ready, please.
B: Doctor Max hasn’t send the medicines that you had him order from Germany.
H: Please go get them yourself, Boris. If I have an attack, they are the only thing that helps me to bear it.
B: We also have the thermal chamber [‘urna térmica’] treatment.
H: No, I don’t trust that cursed apparatus.
B: I’ve put you in it before.
H: Yes, but one bad calculation and I’ll never wake up.
B: You know how careful I am.
H: I need to recover. I need to go and speak with Soledad’s parents to resolve this. (Hugo tries to stand up but he can’t.) Please prepare the smelling salts for nausea.
Boris: Lie down again…
H: Please just get them ready. (Boris leaves. Hugo lies down.)
Alcides carries Soledad into her room and lays her on the bed.
She starts to wake up, sees him, calls him Hugo and reaches up to caress his face. “Soledad, I’m Alcides,” he says. Soledad quickly withdraws her hand and edges away from him. She asks what happened. Alcides says that she fell from a horse. Ester says that she could have killed herself. Soledad says that she will do it again if they try to lock her up. Alcides suggests sending for Dr. Max. Soledad says no but Lucas disagrees. Ester drags Lucas away saying that Soledad and Alcides need to talk.
A: I’ve wanted to have this time with you for a long time. I brought you flowers as evidence of my affection.
S: Thanks. Alcides, I think it’s better if I don’t receive any more gifts from you.
A: Soledad, I beg you to take a moment to think. I know that you have been seeing Hugo but there isn’t anyone who knows him better than I and he is not what he appears. He isn’t what you are hoping for, Soledad.
S: Thanks, Alcides. I don’t want to be rude but would you let me be alone?
Alcides leaves her room sadly and remembers having to say to his mother as a child that he wasn’t Hugo. He says that he will show Soledad that he is better than Hugo.
Arturo has sent his maid, Matilde, to keep an eye on Beatriz. Beatriz bribes her to go away by giving Matilde her earrings.
Ester asks Lucas what he thinks about Alcides’ offer to marry Soledad. Lucas says, while Alcides overhears, that he prefers to speak to Hugo first. Soledad is totally in love with him and Lucas doesn’t believe she would accept Alcides. Ester agrees reluctantly and says that she will stay and make sure that Soledad doesn’t do anything crazy. Alcides calls after Lucas. He says that he can see they are set on talking to Hugo. Ester thanks him for his offer but they are going to try and resolve this first with Hugo. He must respond for what he did. Alcides offers to go with Lucas but he declines the offer and asks Alcides to go ask Dr. Max to come and look at Soledad.
In the market, Helena accuses Guillermo of wasting his money on other women. She grabs a package he is carrying but it only contains black clothing and rope for climbing walls.
Beatriz gets into Hugo’s house by catching the front door before it closes behind Úrsula.
Alcides arrives at Dr. Max’s house just as he is going out. Alcides says that Dr. Max needs to come and check out Soledad de Obragón who fell from a horse and bumped her head. Dr. Max says that he will come but first he has to deliver the package of medicines he is carrying to Alcides’ brother, Hugo. Alcides is surprised. He says that he didn’t know Hugo was ill. Dr. Max says that Hugo isn’t his patient. He merely ordered these medicines from the eminent German doctor, Ernest von Chirac. Alcides makes a proposition to Dr. Max. He will deliver the medicines to Hugo while Dr. Max goes to see Soledad. “You will do this for me?” says Dr. Max. Alcides replies that he would do anything for his brother.
Hugo is lying on his bed when he hears the door open. He asks if Boris has gotten the medicines. Beatriz comes into the room and lifts the veil from her face.
Beatriz: It’s me, my love.

Hugo starts to pass out. Beatriz asks him what’s the matter and then she starts kissing Hugo and ends up on top of him on the bed just as Lucas comes through the door. “What is going on here?!” demands Lucas.

“I’ve come to talk to you about my daughter,” says Lucas. Hugo manages to get Beatriz off him and to sit up. “In spite of having injured her dignity, Hugo de Medina, I thought, naively, that you really loved her!” Hugo stands up and holds Beatriz at bay. “Don Lucas,” he says, “ I assure you that I will assume my responsibility to Soledad… “Don Lucas,” says Hugo, gasping for breath, “but I can’t see you right now, please…”
“I don’t care what you are doing with this woman. You will have the courtesy to speak to me right now!” says Lucas, “You scum, it’s clear that you enjoy playing with women.” Hugo says that isn’t true. Beatriz pipes up and starts to agree with Lucas. “Please be quiet,” says Hugo supporting himself by holding onto Beatriz’ shoulder, “Don’t you realize that with every thing that you do and every thing you say you only do me more harm? Please leave my house.” Beatriz leaves and Boris comes into the room behind Lucas. “Don Lucas,” says Hugo, “For God’s sake, Don Lucas, please leave. I promise that later… that tomorrow…” Lucas demands that Hugo speak to him right now. Hugo asks Boris to accompany Lucas. Boris frog marches Lucas out the door of Hugo’s room and down the stairs. Lucas protests at this treatment but he is no match for Boris. Back in his room, Hugo falls back on the bed.
Alcides takes a vial of Hugo’s medicines to a pharmacy [botica]. He asks the pharmacist if he can tell from the appearance and smell of a vial what kind of medicine it is. The pharmacist says that his twenty years of experience have some use. Alcides gives him a vial of Hugo’s medicine and asks the pharmacist to tell him what it is and what it’s for.
Soledad is having a nightmare. She is in the woods in her wedding gown. Hugo calls her to her to help him. She turns and sees that Hugo is sliding into a grave. He holds out his arm to her. She runs over, kneels down, kisses Hugo’s forehead and tries to keep him from slipping into the grave but she can’t hold him. Soledad wakes up and cries out. Ester comes in and asks what is the matter. Soledad says that it is Hugo. Something bad is happening to him. “I have to go see him,” she says.
Hugo is on his bed with his eyes closed. A shadow falls over him. He opens his eyes to see someone holding a knife over his chest. He keeps the murderer, who we see is Fabio, from stabbing him. Then he manages to get off the bed and defend himself against Fabio, who, fortunately, seems to be a very poor knife fighter.
Soledad says that Hugo is in danger. Her mother tells her not to say stupid things. It was only a nightmare. Soledad says that it was so real. She knows something terrible is happening. Hugo is suffering. She wants to go help Hugo. Ester tells her to get back in bed. She won’t let Soledad do any more crazy things. Soledad says that they can’t keep her locked up. Ester says that she can until Lucas speaks to ‘that man.’ She tells Soledad that Lucas has gone to see Hugo to resolve the situation between them. Although it will pain her soul, Ester says that Soledad will have to marry Hugo. Soledad is impactada.
In the stairway of Hugo’s house, Marina is scolding Úrsula. She says that if Úrsula hadn’t let Beatriz and Lucas in, none of this would have happened. Úrsula asks how could she have known that Lucas would go up to Hugo’s room and she doesn’t know how Beatriz got into the house. They hear noises coming from Hugo’s room and run to see what is going on. Hugo and Fabio are fighting without the knife. Fabio slams Hugo against a wardrobe and leans over to pick up the knife from the floor. At this moment, Marina opens the door. When she enters, Hugo collapses to the floor unconscious and Fabio flees.

Boris sees Fabio climbing down the gate of the courtyard. He draws his gun but Fabio escapes.
Marina is leaning over Hugo begging him to wake up. Boris comes in and asks what happened. Marina says that she heard noises and when she came into the room, Hugo was fighting with someone and then he fainted. She says that Hugo is cold and asks if he is dead. Boris says of course not. He tells Marina to go to Dr. Max’s and ask him for Hugo’s medicines. He tells her not to say a word to anyone.
The newsboy hawks papers by telling people to read all about Hugo’s dramatic rescue of Ester. Lucas buys a paper and reads the story. It’s news to Lucas.
Helena does not want Guillermo to try and steal things from Hugo’s house. She lets it slip that she doesn’t want him to get killed because she loves him. Guillermo is moved and says that he will tell Alcides that he won’t work for him anymore.
Beatriz returns to her house. She tells her brother that she had a headache but he notices right away that she no longer has her earrings.
Dr. Max is examining Soledad when Lucas arrives home. Soledad wants to know how things went with Hugo but Dr. Max isn’t finished examining her. Lucas takes Ester out of the room.
Beatriz tells Arturo that she took off the earring when she was trying something on and forgot them. She asks if the interrogation is over and goes upstairs.
Ester reads the article in the paper. She says that it wasn’t like that – that man nearly killed her. She imagines what all their friends are saying. Lucas tells Ester that Hugo refuses to do the honorable thing by their daughter.
Hugo is on his bed. Boris is concerned that this catalepsy attack could last for hours and it could take days for Hugo to recover. He tells Hugo not to worry. He has sent Marina for the medicines so that Hugo can wake up without the terrible pains in his body.
Alcides is outside Dr. Max’s house reading the article in the paper about Hugo’s rescue of Ester. “What idiots!” he says. He hears Marina knocking on the door looking for Dr. Max. Alcides tells her that Dr. Max had an emergency. Alcides asks why she has come. Marina says that she can’t tell him. He holds up the box and asks if she is looking for this. Marina asks if they are Hugo’s medicines. Alcides says that Dr. Max asked him to deliver them to his brother. Marina asks Alcides to give her the box. It is urgent that she bring them. Alcides asks what is going on. He says that he is interested in knowing what has happened to his brother. Marina says that she only knows that a man got into the house and was fighting with Hugo and then he fainted and was very pale and very cold. “My God!” says Alcides, “was he injured?” Marina says that is what is strange. He was very pale and cold but there was no blood anywhere. Boris sent her to get the medicines because they would help Hugo recover. She asks again for Alcides to give the box to her. He makes as if to hand her the box but lets it fall on the ground and all the vials are broken. “How clumsy of me!” says Alcides.

Without the medicines, the thermal chamber is the only option available to maintain Hugo’s body temperature. He says that it’s the perfect time. The rest of the staff have gone to bed. He tells Hugo not to worry. Everything will be ok. Boris carries Hugo down to the basement and puts him a coffin-like thingy with windows. Boris adjusts various dials. Hissing sounds indicate that the chamber is powered by steam. “Don Hugo,” says Boris, “I know you don’t like to be in here but there is no alternative.”
At the Obragón house [where he background sound at night is always a lot of dogs barking], Soledad is dressed for the ball and is putting on some perfume. Lucas comes in and says that she is exquisite [preciosa]. Soledad says that she doesn’t feel that way but her mother doesn’t care about that. Lucas tells her not to be so hard on Ester. She is only trying to help Soledad get over all this. Lucas says that Soledad has to return to the way she was before: a happy young woman full of anticipation. One book Boris looks at says that no external substances like alcohol or ammonia will make the cataleptic patient respond. Boris says that he has tried such things many times. Boris can’t find any new information. Suddenly a psychic wind blows the cloth off Hugo’s father's skull upstairs and makes a book fall off the shelf in the basement. It’s Hugo’s father’s diary. Boris reads an entry that says that Armando had been in bed for two days suffering one of his most severe attacks of catalepsy. Then, the impossible happened. All thanks to my dog Sultan and the skill of my wife. [Flashback to this happening.] Armando is in bed with Anabel by his side holding his hand. A collie comes in and starts barking. There is a slight movement in Armando’s hand. Anabel tells the dog to keep barking. Armando wakes up. “Sultan’s barking was a stimulus that made me wake up,” Boris reads Armando’s diary out loud.
“Of course,” says Boris, “a stimulus is what Don Hugo needs to be able to wake up.” He leaves the basement.
Helena surprises Guillermo outside Hugo’s house. She says that she has come to take care of him.
Boris is rummaging around in Hugo’s room. He finds what he is looking for in a box. “Thank God,” he says, “I hope this works.”
Beatriz comes downstairs in a ball gown. Arturo says that she is more beautiful than Soledad. Beatriz says that she doesn’t think it is a good idea to go to the party. Arturo says that it is a good idea. He says that he wants everyone in the city to realize that Beatriz de Linares has overcome what Hugo de Medina did to her. “I promise you,” says Arturo, “that is it will be an unforgettable night.”

Beatriz comes downstairs in a ball gown. Arturo says that she is more beautiful than Soledad. Beatriz says that she doesn’t think it is a good idea to go to the party. Arturo says that it is a good idea. He says that he wants everyone in the city to realize that Beatriz de Linares has overcome what Hugo de Medina did to her. “I promise you,” says Arturo, “that is it will be an unforgettable night.”
"I’m holding Soledad’s handkerchief in front of you," Boris says to Hugo,
"Think of her. Remember her scent, her words, all that you love about her, all that she means to you. Please, Don Hugo, make an effort."

Hugo and Soledad at the party
S: (coldly)What are you doing here?
H: I only wanted to wish you a happy birthday. I suppose your father told you about what happened this morning at my house. I owe you an explanation and that’s why I’m here. It was all a misunderstanding.
Ester sees that Hugo has come to the party and wants to confront him but Lucas tells her not to make a scandal. She tells Lucas to let go of her and heads off towards Hugo.
H: (to Soledad) Give me the opportunity to clear up what happened.
Ester: You have nothing to clear up here. Please have the courtesy to leave this party.
S: Mother!
Judge: Look who we have here! The hero who saved the life of Ester de Obragón!
E: Judge, please.
Judge: The whole city already knows that Hugo saved you from being run down by a carriage. [While the judge is speaking, Hugo is looking at Soledad. He says ‘I love you’ (‘te amo’) silently and winks at her. Super cute wink.]
H: Judge, please, how embarrassing.
Judge: I personally believe that Don Hugo deserves a round of applause. Don’t you think? (Everyone applauds.)
Guillermo and Elena are breaking into Hugo’s house. Guillermo says that he has everything under control when a dog comes and bites his leg. However, the diminutive duo deal with the dog and get into the house. Helena wants to leave. She says that she feels that something bad will happen. Guillermo says that he isn’t leaving empty handed after getting past the dog. He can’t believe that Helena, who digs up corpses in the cemetery, is afraid of Hugo de Medina. “From experience,” says Elena, “I say that one should be more afraid of the living than of the dead and Hugo de Medina is at the top of my list.”
At Soledad’s party, Ester tells Soledad that she isn’t going to listen to the falsehoods [‘embustes’] of this man. She tells Hugo that if he has any decency, he will leave. “Precisely because I have decency, I’m not leaving until she listens to what I have to say. Soledad tells her mother that it is better if she and Hugo go and talk in the garden. Ester starts to go after them but Lucas tells her that everyone is looking at them. Whether she likes it or not, she is going to have to accept that Hugo is here at the party.
Los Burke are in Hugo’s bedroom. They find the skull of Hugo’s father and scream in terror.
Alcides asks Ester and Lucas to explain what Hugo is doing with Soledad. He says that he was supposed to be her escort and this is making him look ridiculous. Lucas says that he understands how Alcides feels but everyone thinks Hugo is a hero and it wouldn’t look good to reject him. Alcides asks if that is more important than what Lucas saw in the morning with his own eyes. Lucas says that it isn’t necessary to remind him of it but his daughter needs to talk to Hugo. Maybe he can explain to her what happened. Alcides asks if Hugo is giving her an explanation or telling lies. He says that he will go talk to Hugo right now. “No,” Lucas says to him, “You are a gentleman and that is how you should behave. Please wait. My daughter is sensible and she will realize what kind of man Hugo de Medina is. Don’t you think?” Alcides doesn’t look convinced.
Hugo and Soledad in the garden-
H: You are completely right. You have every right to think the worst of me. Please Soledad, I only want to assure you that what your father saw in my house is not what it appears.
S: You weren’t kissing Beatriz?
H: I could give you a thousand explanations, such as… (Soledad shakes her head in frustration) How much do you trust me?
S: I know that Beatriz has been pursuing you. When he found you… your response… Hugo, why didn’t you want to speak to him? Why? He wanted to talk about us.

Ester suggests that maybe it was a trick to reassure them and enable Hugo to come to the club without any problems. Alcides tells Ester that he doesn’t know how much longer he can take what is happening. Ester and Lucas have to decide if they want him to save Soledad from Hugo’s clutches. Ester agrees that it is time to put an end to Soledad’s infatuation with Hugo. Ester says that his very night, publicly, he will ask for Soledad’s hand in marriage.
Hugo comes out of the club and speaks with Boris.
H: It will be best if you return to the house. I will stay a little longer.
B: I don’t think it is a good idea to leave you alone, sir. You just recovered from an attack of catalepsy. In addition, if any of your enemies tries to harm you, it could be very dangerous.
H: Don’t worry. Nothing will get in the way of the happiest night of my life.
B: You seem in very good spirits.
H: Soledad’s handkerchief succeeded in waking me up from an attack of catalepsy. This has a special significance.
Hugo flashes back to Boris holding the handkerchief over his face and asking him remember Soledad’s scent and to make an effort to wake up. Then we see one of Hugo’s fingers move.
H: (smiling) She is my salvation.
B: Then I suppose that you will tell her the truth about your illness.
H: At the right moment.
B: I am sure that Señorita Soledad will support you.
H: Return to the house, Boris.
B: I will leave right away.
All during this conversation, Hugo and Soledad are watching and smiling at each other.
Los Burke can’t get out of Hugo’s house. Elena claims it is enchanted.
Úrsula wakes up Marina and tells her that she heard noises and she thinks someone is in the house. Marina says that Hugo and Boris are in the house. Úrsula says that they left a while ago. Marina says that can’t be true – Hugo was very ill and couldn’t get up. Úrsula says that might be so but Hugo and Boris left the house together. Úrsula says that she thinks there are burglars in the house. Marina tells her to go check it out herself.
Hugo gives Soledad a locket and puts it on her. [This locket will have a lot of significance in the story.]

S: It won’t be easy but it doesn’t matter. After this, no one can separate us. They kiss.
Úrsula locks Los Burke in the cellar.
Hugo and Soledad encounter Arturo and Beatriz. Soledad asks what they are doing there. They weren’t invited. Beatriz responds that they don’t need an invitation to come to the club that her grandfather founded. Arturo says that they should leave. “You just arrived and now you want to leave, Linares?” says Hugo. Beatriz wants Arturo to tell Hugo that he’s the one who shouldn’t be here. Arturo says that is why they should leave but Beatriz says that she wants to show Hugo that Soledad doesn’t matter to her. Arturo is adamant that they leave but Ester comes over and pointedly asks them to stay. Soledad says that Arturo and Beatriz weren’t invited. Ester replies that she won’t be so discourteous as to make them leave, “After all,” she says to them, “You aren’t the only ones who came without an invitation.”
Úrsula tells Marina that she locked the robbers in the basement. Los Burke are trying to find a way out of the cellar when they find the metal door of the room where Hugo keeps the thermal chamber. Los Burke assume that it is a door to a safe where Hugo keeps his fortune and his secrets.
Lucas says that Ester is crazy for letting the Linares stay. Ester says this is their opportunity to expose Hugo. Lucas says that it appears that Soledad has forgiven Hugo and points them out dancing happily together to Ester.
Alcides watches his brother dance with Soledad with hatred and despair. Arturo says that he can’t believe that Hugo is here. His men assured him that Hugo collapsed like he was dead. Alcides tells Arturo that his men are useless and couldn’t finish Hugo off. Arturo says that he has already taken steps so that they won’t make the same error the next time. Alcides asks when the next time will be. When Soledad is married to Hugo and Alcides is an old man? Arturo says that Alcides bears part of the blame. Alcides told Arturo that Hugo was very ill and that is why he brought Beatriz to this stupid party. “You and I have an agreement, Arturo” says Alcides, “You take care of him and when I get control of his fortune, I will give you a large part of it. But it looks like you aren’t going to succeed.” Arturo assures Alcides that the next time, he won’t make any mistakes. “I hope so. [‘Eso espero.’]” says Alcides. Alcides leaves the ballroom passing Hugo and Soledad dancing with eyes only for each other. Beatriz follows him.
Úrsula, armed with a log and Marina with a candle, investigate the burglars. Marina says that Úrsula had better not be making this up. They hear a noise and conclude that the burglars have gotten out of the cellar and are coming for them. Steps approach. The women hide and knock Boris out.
Outside, Alcides, his eyes full of tears, looks up and says, “You have to help me God. Are you listening? You have to help me to win Soledad’s heart.” He closes his eyes. “Help me God, help me,” he says. Beatriz comes up behind him and says that it must be hard for him to see Soledad. Alcides wipes away his tears.
B: It must be frustrating for you to know that your brother always gets what he wants. As opposed to you.
A: (he turns to look at her) What makes you think I’m going to listen to a spoiled, little girl like you.
B: Of course, you prefer to stay in a corner lamenting while your brother takes your girlfriend.
A: Beatriz, have you heard the expression that flies don’t go into an open mouth?
B: You and Hugo are identical on the outside but on the inside you are like day and night. He is successful, rich, attractive, while you…
A: I am much better than he is and I can prove it. I can prove it right now. (He kisses her.)
B: We can be seen here. Let’s go somewhere else… (They kiss again) Hugo.. Hugo..
A: I’m Alcides, not Hugo.
Marina and Úrsula get the unconscious Boris onto his bed. Marina says that she will take care of Boris and she sends Úrsula to deal with the robbers.
Arturo comes looking for Beatriz. She says that she came out for some air and Alcides says that they were only talking. Arturo tells Beatriz to go back to the party. “For your own good,” says Arturo, don’t go near my sister.”
Boris wakes up. Marina tells him that Úrsula hit him because she thought he was one of the robbers that she supposedly heard. Boris wants to go investigate but Marina won’t let him. She tells him not to worry about Úrsula. Then she kisses him.
Úrsula goes to the basement. She wonders if she imagined hearing the noises. She opens the door of the cellar and asks if anyone is there. Nothing happens for a few seconds and then Los Burke knock her down as they try to escape. Úrsula goes after them.
Alcides comes back into the party. Hugo comes up to him.
H: Alcides, why do you hate me so much, brother?
A: Hate you? What are you talking about?
H: I know about what you did to my medicines. That doesn’t matter.
A: It was an accident, Hugo. But life is fragile above all when you are ill.. What is the matter with you?
H: Nothing. But when you have something to fight for, it makes you strong, invincible.
A: You are referring to Soledad? The last word hasn’t been spoken, it hasn’t been decided who will lead her to the altar.
H: Alcides, I know you, brother. Soledad is only a whim for you.
A: When you have something to fight for, you are strong and invincible and I am tired of losing to you.
H: Lose? But you and I aren’t in a competition!
A: No? Who, since we were children, received all the love of our family? To whom was given the major part of the fortune? Who has the respect of everyone because he has traveled all over the world? This time it won’t be me that everyone is pointing at with scorn. I will win Soledad’s heart whatever it costs.
H: You are confused. Soledad isn’t a trophy… I am not going to play your game.
Boris asks Marina why she kissed him. She says that since she came to the house, she has felt… Her confession of love for Boris is interrupted by the sound of a shot. Boris leaps up and goes downstairs to see Úrsula firing a gun as Los Burke run out of the house. The kick of the shotgun knocks Úrsula down. Boris helps her up and says that she shouldn’t have taken such a risk. Marina is jealous that Boris is helping Úrsula but Boris scolds Marina for not believing Úrsula when she said there were robbers in the house. He says that because of Marina’s negligence, there was almost a tragedy.
Ester sits down with Beatriz. Beatriz tells Ester that her relationship with Hugo isn’t over. She says that they are still lovers. Ester says that her daughter is young and inexperienced and she doesn’t want her to be deceived. She asks Beatriz to tell her the truth. Beatriz says that Hugo doesn’t want anything from Ester’s daughter. He sees her has silly girl he can show in Society. He wants to get rid of his reputation as a seducer that is harming his business. Ester says that she understands. Beatriz says that Hugo is a man with powerful appetites. She says that he is insatiable and only she can satisfy him. That is why they continue to be together. Beatriz says that she feels sorry for Soledad and for them, such a distinguished family. Hugo de Medina will bring them nothing but pain and shame.
Arturo says to Hugo that the war isn’t over and he swears to be rid of Hugo. He won’t stop until he is successful. Hugo says that it must be frustrating for Arturo to find him here. Arturo says that next time his men won’t fail. Hugo replies that if Arturo wants to kill him so much, why doesn’t he do it with his own hands instead of hiding behind worthless bandits. Hugo dares him to try and kill him with his own hands. Arturo smashes his glass on the floor and says that if Hugo thinks that Arturo is afraid to confront him in person, they can fight here and now.
Los Burke make good their escape from Hugo’s house. Helena says that it was the worst night of her life. Guillermo says now that they are familiar with the house, it will easier to break in the next time. Helena says that she isn’t going back there but Guillermo says that he has to find out what is in the safe. Hugo’s fortune could change their lives. Helena replies that all the gold in the world wouldn’t make her have anything to do with Hugo de Medina.
Arturo taunts Hugo and calls him a coward. Hugo just looks amused. Soledad, Ester and Beatriz come up. Ester tells Hugo to leave immediately. “What a shame, what a disgraceful incident,” says Hugo, “I beg your pardon.” Soledad tells her mother that it is her party and she will decide who stays. Looking at Arturo, she says it is clear who isn’t welcome here. Soledad and Hugo turn to walk away. Arturo says to Hugo that they will find an opportunity to resolve their differences. Hugo walks away without responding.
Lucas prevents Ester from going after Soledad and Hugo and asks the musicians to start playing again. Alcides comes up and tells Ester that he has had it up to here with the situation. Ester fumes that Hugo is doing exactly as he pleases and has no respect for them. Ester says that will change. She tells Lucas to have the headwaiter get everything ready for the toast [‘brindis’]. Ester says that during the toast, Alcides will announce publicly that he is engaged to Soledad. Lucas doesn’t agree. He says that Hugo is ready to marry Soledad. Ester says that will happen over her dead body. She will not let him near her daughter now that she has found out his true intentions from Beatriz.
Boris carries Úrsula to her bed. He says that her knee is bleeding. She says it must have happened when the robbers knocked her down but it’s nothing. Boris asks if she saw who the robbers were but Úrsula said it was too dark and it happened too fast. Boris asks Marina to get first aid stuff but she refuses. She says that the blow that Úrsula gave Boris should be looked at first. Boris gives Marina a look and leaves the room. Úrsula says that Boris is a gentleman. Marina tells Úrsula to be careful and not to think about going after Boris. Úrsula says not to threaten her. Boris will never be interested in Marina. Marina attacks Úrsula.
Soledad has her glove off and Hugo is kissing her hand.
H: I beg your pardon for what happened in there.
S: Don’t worry, my love. I know it was a misunderstanding by Beatriz
H: Arturo is a very violent man and he’s tried… but I don’t want to think about those things (he smiles). Forget them.
S: You realize that everyone is against us: my parents, Arturo, Beatriz. There has to be some way to be able to get away from them. (Hugo kisses her) Do you know what I would like to do right now?
H: What?
S: I would like us to run way and get married right now in a church.
H: That is a beautiful craziness but we have to do what is right. I will speak to your parents. Tonight I will speak to them.
S: I don’t care what they say. I am going to marry you, my love. Even if I have to go against them, I will do it. (he kisses her).
(Ester says that they are waiting for Soledad for the toast.)
S: (to Hugo) Let’s go!
Ester tells her that Hugo isn’t coming. She says that she recognizes his miserable game, that he never had good intentions towards her daughter. “Enough, mother!” says Soledad. Hugo tries to speak to Ester but she says that he is wrong if he thinks that her daughter is a toy for his filthy desires.
“My love, do you trust me?” ['Amor mío.. Confías en mí?'] says Hugo to Soledad. She smiles and they run back into the part with Ester in pursuit.
Boris separates Marina and Úrsula. Marina tells Boris that since Úrsula came to the house, he has been a different person and she won’t take it. Boris asks what she is talking about. Marina tells him that there isn’t room for both of them in this house, it’s Úrsula or her.
Hugo and Soledad come into the club. Ester looks desperately for Alcides. Hugo calls for attention and holds up a glass, “Ladies and gentlemen! I want to offer a toast to Soledad for her happiness on this special day, her birthday, and take advantage of the occasion to announce to all the distinguished society present here tonight that Soledad and I are engaged to be married.” The Judge offers a toast to the couple and all the guests toast and say, “Salud!”
Alcides pushes his way through the crowd and knocks Hugo down saying that this is a farce. Hugo has no right to announce anything because Soledad’s parents haven’t agreed. He tries to hit Hugo again but Hugo avoids the blow. Arturo grabs Hugo from behind, which lets Alcides punch Hugo again. Confusion reigns until the Judge fires his pistol in the air and threatens to drag everyone to the police station if they don’t behave properly. Alcides asks where Hugo is. Ester notices that Soledad is gone.
Hugo and Soledad are outside the club.

Lucas says that Ester is crazy for letting the Linares stay. Ester says this is their opportunity to expose Hugo. Lucas says that it appears that Soledad has forgiven Hugo and points them out dancing happily together to Ester.
Alcides watches his brother dance with Soledad with hatred and despair. Arturo says that he can’t believe that Hugo is here. His men assured him that Hugo collapsed like he was dead. Alcides tells Arturo that his men are useless and couldn’t finish Hugo off. Arturo says that he has already taken steps so that they won’t make the same error the next time. Alcides asks when the next time will be. When Soledad is married to Hugo and Alcides is an old man? Arturo says that Alcides bears part of the blame. Alcides told Arturo that Hugo was very ill and that is why he brought Beatriz to this stupid party. “You and I have an agreement, Arturo” says Alcides, “You take care of him and when I get control of his fortune, I will give you a large part of it. But it looks like you aren’t going to succeed.” Arturo assures Alcides that the next time, he won’t make any mistakes. “I hope so. [‘Eso espero.’]” says Alcides. Alcides leaves the ballroom passing Hugo and Soledad dancing with eyes only for each other. Beatriz follows him.
Úrsula, armed with a log and Marina with a candle, investigate the burglars. Marina says that Úrsula had better not be making this up. They hear a noise and conclude that the burglars have gotten out of the cellar and are coming for them. Steps approach. The women hide and knock Boris out.
Outside, Alcides, his eyes full of tears, looks up and says, “You have to help me God. Are you listening? You have to help me to win Soledad’s heart.” He closes his eyes. “Help me God, help me,” he says. Beatriz comes up behind him and says that it must be hard for him to see Soledad. Alcides wipes away his tears.
B: It must be frustrating for you to know that your brother always gets what he wants. As opposed to you.
A: (he turns to look at her) What makes you think I’m going to listen to a spoiled, little girl like you.
B: Of course, you prefer to stay in a corner lamenting while your brother takes your girlfriend.
A: Beatriz, have you heard the expression that flies don’t go into an open mouth?
B: You and Hugo are identical on the outside but on the inside you are like day and night. He is successful, rich, attractive, while you…
A: I am much better than he is and I can prove it. I can prove it right now. (He kisses her.)
B: We can be seen here. Let’s go somewhere else… (They kiss again) Hugo.. Hugo..
A: I’m Alcides, not Hugo.
Marina and Úrsula get the unconscious Boris onto his bed. Marina says that she will take care of Boris and she sends Úrsula to deal with the robbers.
Arturo comes looking for Beatriz. She says that she came out for some air and Alcides says that they were only talking. Arturo tells Beatriz to go back to the party. “For your own good,” says Arturo, don’t go near my sister.”
Boris wakes up. Marina tells him that Úrsula hit him because she thought he was one of the robbers that she supposedly heard. Boris wants to go investigate but Marina won’t let him. She tells him not to worry about Úrsula. Then she kisses him.
Úrsula goes to the basement. She wonders if she imagined hearing the noises. She opens the door of the cellar and asks if anyone is there. Nothing happens for a few seconds and then Los Burke knock her down as they try to escape. Úrsula goes after them.
Alcides comes back into the party. Hugo comes up to him.
H: Alcides, why do you hate me so much, brother?
A: Hate you? What are you talking about?
H: I know about what you did to my medicines. That doesn’t matter.
A: It was an accident, Hugo. But life is fragile above all when you are ill.. What is the matter with you?
H: Nothing. But when you have something to fight for, it makes you strong, invincible.
A: You are referring to Soledad? The last word hasn’t been spoken, it hasn’t been decided who will lead her to the altar.
H: Alcides, I know you, brother. Soledad is only a whim for you.
A: When you have something to fight for, you are strong and invincible and I am tired of losing to you.
H: Lose? But you and I aren’t in a competition!
A: No? Who, since we were children, received all the love of our family? To whom was given the major part of the fortune? Who has the respect of everyone because he has traveled all over the world? This time it won’t be me that everyone is pointing at with scorn. I will win Soledad’s heart whatever it costs.
H: You are confused. Soledad isn’t a trophy… I am not going to play your game.
Boris asks Marina why she kissed him. She says that since she came to the house, she has felt… Her confession of love for Boris is interrupted by the sound of a shot. Boris leaps up and goes downstairs to see Úrsula firing a gun as Los Burke run out of the house. The kick of the shotgun knocks Úrsula down. Boris helps her up and says that she shouldn’t have taken such a risk. Marina is jealous that Boris is helping Úrsula but Boris scolds Marina for not believing Úrsula when she said there were robbers in the house. He says that because of Marina’s negligence, there was almost a tragedy.
Ester sits down with Beatriz. Beatriz tells Ester that her relationship with Hugo isn’t over. She says that they are still lovers. Ester says that her daughter is young and inexperienced and she doesn’t want her to be deceived. She asks Beatriz to tell her the truth. Beatriz says that Hugo doesn’t want anything from Ester’s daughter. He sees her has silly girl he can show in Society. He wants to get rid of his reputation as a seducer that is harming his business. Ester says that she understands. Beatriz says that Hugo is a man with powerful appetites. She says that he is insatiable and only she can satisfy him. That is why they continue to be together. Beatriz says that she feels sorry for Soledad and for them, such a distinguished family. Hugo de Medina will bring them nothing but pain and shame.
Arturo says to Hugo that the war isn’t over and he swears to be rid of Hugo. He won’t stop until he is successful. Hugo says that it must be frustrating for Arturo to find him here. Arturo says that next time his men won’t fail. Hugo replies that if Arturo wants to kill him so much, why doesn’t he do it with his own hands instead of hiding behind worthless bandits. Hugo dares him to try and kill him with his own hands. Arturo smashes his glass on the floor and says that if Hugo thinks that Arturo is afraid to confront him in person, they can fight here and now.
Los Burke make good their escape from Hugo’s house. Helena says that it was the worst night of her life. Guillermo says now that they are familiar with the house, it will easier to break in the next time. Helena says that she isn’t going back there but Guillermo says that he has to find out what is in the safe. Hugo’s fortune could change their lives. Helena replies that all the gold in the world wouldn’t make her have anything to do with Hugo de Medina.
Arturo taunts Hugo and calls him a coward. Hugo just looks amused. Soledad, Ester and Beatriz come up. Ester tells Hugo to leave immediately. “What a shame, what a disgraceful incident,” says Hugo, “I beg your pardon.” Soledad tells her mother that it is her party and she will decide who stays. Looking at Arturo, she says it is clear who isn’t welcome here. Soledad and Hugo turn to walk away. Arturo says to Hugo that they will find an opportunity to resolve their differences. Hugo walks away without responding.
Lucas prevents Ester from going after Soledad and Hugo and asks the musicians to start playing again. Alcides comes up and tells Ester that he has had it up to here with the situation. Ester fumes that Hugo is doing exactly as he pleases and has no respect for them. Ester says that will change. She tells Lucas to have the headwaiter get everything ready for the toast [‘brindis’]. Ester says that during the toast, Alcides will announce publicly that he is engaged to Soledad. Lucas doesn’t agree. He says that Hugo is ready to marry Soledad. Ester says that will happen over her dead body. She will not let him near her daughter now that she has found out his true intentions from Beatriz.
Boris carries Úrsula to her bed. He says that her knee is bleeding. She says it must have happened when the robbers knocked her down but it’s nothing. Boris asks if she saw who the robbers were but Úrsula said it was too dark and it happened too fast. Boris asks Marina to get first aid stuff but she refuses. She says that the blow that Úrsula gave Boris should be looked at first. Boris gives Marina a look and leaves the room. Úrsula says that Boris is a gentleman. Marina tells Úrsula to be careful and not to think about going after Boris. Úrsula says not to threaten her. Boris will never be interested in Marina. Marina attacks Úrsula.
Soledad has her glove off and Hugo is kissing her hand.
H: I beg your pardon for what happened in there.
S: Don’t worry, my love. I know it was a misunderstanding by Beatriz
H: Arturo is a very violent man and he’s tried… but I don’t want to think about those things (he smiles). Forget them.
S: You realize that everyone is against us: my parents, Arturo, Beatriz. There has to be some way to be able to get away from them. (Hugo kisses her) Do you know what I would like to do right now?
H: What?
S: I would like us to run way and get married right now in a church.
H: That is a beautiful craziness but we have to do what is right. I will speak to your parents. Tonight I will speak to them.
S: I don’t care what they say. I am going to marry you, my love. Even if I have to go against them, I will do it. (he kisses her).
(Ester says that they are waiting for Soledad for the toast.)
S: (to Hugo) Let’s go!
Ester tells her that Hugo isn’t coming. She says that she recognizes his miserable game, that he never had good intentions towards her daughter. “Enough, mother!” says Soledad. Hugo tries to speak to Ester but she says that he is wrong if he thinks that her daughter is a toy for his filthy desires.
“My love, do you trust me?” ['Amor mío.. Confías en mí?'] says Hugo to Soledad. She smiles and they run back into the part with Ester in pursuit.
Boris separates Marina and Úrsula. Marina tells Boris that since Úrsula came to the house, he has been a different person and she won’t take it. Boris asks what she is talking about. Marina tells him that there isn’t room for both of them in this house, it’s Úrsula or her.
Hugo and Soledad come into the club. Ester looks desperately for Alcides. Hugo calls for attention and holds up a glass, “Ladies and gentlemen! I want to offer a toast to Soledad for her happiness on this special day, her birthday, and take advantage of the occasion to announce to all the distinguished society present here tonight that Soledad and I are engaged to be married.” The Judge offers a toast to the couple and all the guests toast and say, “Salud!”
Alcides pushes his way through the crowd and knocks Hugo down saying that this is a farce. Hugo has no right to announce anything because Soledad’s parents haven’t agreed. He tries to hit Hugo again but Hugo avoids the blow. Arturo grabs Hugo from behind, which lets Alcides punch Hugo again. Confusion reigns until the Judge fires his pistol in the air and threatens to drag everyone to the police station if they don’t behave properly. Alcides asks where Hugo is. Ester notices that Soledad is gone.
Hugo and Soledad are outside the club.
H: Are you sure you want to do this? Leave now, like this?
S: After what you told me, I don’t need anything more.
H: You are right. You are completely right.
[We see the famous ‘cabin in the forest’ ['cabaña en la bosque'] for the first time.

Pasión Thursday Feb. 7--Confession isn't good for the soul
[Lots of dialog and action in this one, less detail. As always please correct or fill in the blanks since I don't have the advantage of caps!]
We start out with the bride and groom arriving at home and then the nice (long) romantic scene where they finally make love, with Camila obviously into it, more so than the last time. She pulls him to her. We get glimpses of them between all the red and white roses that Jimena has positioned in a million vases around the bedroom.
Quick cut to Ofelia, being dropped off at her house by Dona Sofia (who we don’t see).
Back to Camila and Ric—he’s asleep and she touches his face. He wakes up and they start to go at it again. (No words, just music).
Back at Ofelia’s Ascanio and Vasco are loading Don Justo into a coach. Justo appears to be his old self, except for his facial paralysis making it a little hard to understand him. Ofelia says she wished that she could go with him but she wants to see her son. Justo says that it’s not necessary. He tells her to tell her son to be strong and he wants her to thank him for defending Camila. Grita says she’ll be along later but Justo tells her that it’s not necessary and that he’ll be fine. They take off for Justo’s house.
Grita immediately starts pestering Ofelia to take her to see Santiago at the prison. Ofelia tells her no. Ofelia says they probably won’t let her in anyway. Grita starts complaining about her rights as his wife but Ofelia points out that she hasn’t been well of late and besides, what is she going to do there anyway, bicker with Santiago and nag him some more? Grita launches into her “Nobody likes me” speech. Ofelia shoots back that everybody is not against her but they are tired of her badmouthing her sister—“who hasn’t done anything to you.” Grita takes umbrage at this saying that her sister has ruined her life. Before, she and Santiago were happy. Ever since she came back, Santiago just isn’t the same. “Now he’s in jail, and it’s HER fault!” Ofelia shouts back that it wasn’t Camila’s fault and she’s tired of arguing. She walks away. Grita yells after her that she wants to see her husband. Ofelia yells back NO! I SAID NO! Grita stews.
Over at the Mancera Mansion, Ursula is dressed up with her red and white feathers, a servant in tow with a basket of food for Santiago. Fortunata shows up and asks her where she’s going and Ursula tells her. They exchange info about Dona Sofia. Fortunata says that the servants told her that she went out last night and came back in the wee hours of the morning. She didn’t go alone either. “You’re not going to believe it “ says Fortunata, “With Camila, Ofelia and Ricardo.” They went out and then came back according to the Coachman. Ursula asks why and Fortunata adds with excitement: “What else would a couple be doing at Mt. Carmelo in the middle of the night? Getting married!” Ursula is surprised but holds her comment when she sees the servant who had been lagging behind approach.
Back at Justo’s, Vasco and Ascanio are helping him into the house. He doesn’t want to be put back in his bedroom so they seat him at the table. He gathers the solicitous servants around and says he has an announcement to make. “Camila and Ricardo got married last night” he says. Vasco repeats the words but everybody is relieved and happy.
Over at the jailhouse, The jailer admits Ofelia, Ursula and the servant to Santiago’s cell. Santiago asks after Justo and Ofelia says he’s a little better and he’s been able to go home. Then he asks after Rita and Ofelia says she’s fine. Ofelia mentions that Ursula “intervened” with Don Jorge on his behalf. Ursula tells him the good news/bad news—he’ll be set free in a week but he’ll have to endure the public punishment of 20 lashes. Santiago takes the news with a stoic look and Ursula jumps in to say that she can try to get her father to reduce the punishment but Santiago cuts her off and says he’ll take his medicine. Ofelia turns to the contents of her basket which has food and other things “to make him stronger.” Ursula’s brought a basket full of oranges (?). Santiago smiles at Ursula and Ursula looks down demurely and has tears in her eyes, which she wipes away. [I haven’t been able to follow the discussion threads on this in the past couple of episodes—Do people think this is one of those blood—calling out to blood themes that are so popular in novleas? After all, he’s her half-brother right? Or is this Ursula just appreciating the man-flesh as usual?]
Back at Casa Camila, the newlyweds are eating breakfast with Jimena. Jimena is making a fuss over the ring and asks whether it was part of his pirate booty. Ric says no, it belonged to his mother. Jimena asks if she’s still alive but Ric says no, a little darkly, perhaps remembering suddenly how he made that deathbed promise to Mom to steal the family fortune back from that whore his uncle married (i.e. Camila). “You’ve never told me about her“chirps Camila, reaching for his hand. Rico says, “They’ll be time for that.” He changes the subject to the wedding dinner they are going to have. Camila is nervous that Don Jorge will find out and get mad. Ric says he’s going to get mad eventually. Camila says that she wants her Dad to be there. He suggests that they go visit him to see how he’s doing. Camila asks what they are going to do with the business and Ric says they might as well wait until the documents arrive. [I think this is in reference to the removal of the concession?] Camila jumps up to get her things. They both stand up as she goes. After she is some distance away, Jimena asks Ric if he really loves her. Ric sighs and replies, “More than anyone else on earth.“ Jimena says “how come I can’t find a hawt guy like you? Strong, decisive, adventurous and who loves me like crazy!” Rico suave pipes up “How ‘bout Mario?” Jimena makes a face and says he’s annoying [pesado]. He asks if she likes him and she says yes. [I think she says] why, does he like me? Ric responds non comittally, “I don’t know.”
Don Jorge is enquiring of an official if the marriage contract has been signed yet. The guy says no, nothing has shown up yet. Jorge says that’s strange. He understood that they already had done it. The guy tells him that as soon as he gets it, he’ll let him know. And “Have a nice day.” He says to Don Jorge’s departing backside.
Ric and Camila are promenading next to the river on the way to Justo’s house. Ric says he has to go back to his house to talk to Lis. Camila asks whether Lis will be angry. Ric says no, she’s been in a conciliatory mood. I couldn’t hear the next thing he said but suddenly he kisses her and she teases him by running away a short distance. He catches her and kisses her. He asks if she is coming to his house and Camila says she thought he was going to go to her house. He pretends to put his foot down that she should go to HIS house, because he’s the man. She assents and Ric says, and anyway, you be better protected from HIM—as Don Jorge walks up at that moment, with a squad of his personal guard. Don Jorge greets them regally and asks what’s up. Ric says that he’s happy and Don J asks after the stolen fortune. Ric smiles and says not yet, but he trusts he will. He then gallantly introduces Camila as HIS WIFE. Dona Camila Lopez de Carvajal. Don J stiffens and says “future wife?” Ric says nope, “we got married yesterday.” Don J points out that he didn’t give his permission. “But the monks of Mt. Carmelo did” says Ric. Don Jorge says OK, bids them goodbye and leaves very quickly, trailed by the guards. Over loud, dramatic music, Camila is panicked and is afraid that Don J is going to take out his anger on her Dad. Then she’s worried that he’ll do something to Ric. Ric comforts her and says that he can take care of himself and that she needs to have faith him. After all, he’s the dread pirate EL Antillano and he’s not going to let some Podunk lord beat him. This is an occasion for another kissing session.
When Don Jorge arrives home in a bad humor, Sofia is there to greet him with little Tita. She announces that Camila and Ric are married. When he asks how she knows, Sofia tells him that she was one of the witnesses. Don J is livid and says “How dare you?” “In the same manner that you dared to slap me…and in front of your daughter” says Sofia archly. She directs the servant to take Tita. “Is this war?” asks Don J. “An eye for an eye?” “and tooth for tooth” says Sofia. Don J sizes her up. Sofia stares right back at him.
Ursula and Ofelia are walking through the [NOISY!] Plaza after visiting Santiago in jail. Ofelia thanks Ursula and says that she shouldn’t risk it anymore since her dad will be angry when he finds out. Ursula says not to worry, and besides, she’s been remiss in not doing charitable work and it now seems like a good time to get more involved in the community. [Especially when a hunky guy is involved!] Ofelia says that she hasn’t thought of it that way and she’s glad that Ursula feels that way. Ursula takes the opportunity to ask Ofelia if the rumors are true that Camila and Ric got married at Mt. Carmelo. Ofelia says yes. Ursula continues “to avoid that my father sleep with her?” Ofelia replies again, yes. Ursula remarks on how there will be problems when her Dad finds out. Ofelia says there will be problems in any event. The two women bid eachother goodbye and Ursula takes off.
Camila and Ric have arrived at the store. Camila has already checked in with Ascanio to see how he’s doing with the accounts. Ines updates them on how things are going. Vasco is at the mill but he’s worried that they will take everything from them. Camila assures Ines that she still has money and that nobody is going to go hungry. Ines smiles gratefully. Ines suddenly says that she understands that if they lose the concession, they can sell the properties and start over. Ines seems very happy at the prospect. Camila smiles too but Ric gravely takes her aside and leads Camila out of the store.
Don J is now with Marcelino, the notary in his office. He wants him to write up the notice removing the concession for the mill and the store from Justo. Marcelino starts to whimper that the people will think... Don Jorge butts in that he doesn’t care—Here they will do as he says. Marcelino accedes to Don J’s wishes. Marcelino then asks if he wants him to write up a “for sale” notice for the mill and the store. Don J says no, he’s going to give him to his friends. Marcelino tries to interject that usually in these cases…Don J cuts him off again. He doesn’t want to hear anymore. This is personal. Either Marcelino will do what he says or he can look for another job. Marcelino backs down again. The notice should be delivered tomorrow sharp. Marcelino says of course.
Camila and Ric are now walking away from the store. Camila is thinking that maybe she could buy the concessions herself. Ric is still grim and she asks him if he is opposed to the idea. “It’s my father” says Camila. Ric says no, it’s not that. It’s just that this is a bad time. He doesn’t have any money. He’s sure that the ones who took it are LaFont and his buddies but he doesn’t have the proof he needs. Camila says that SHE has money and that she’ll spend every last dime to make sure that her father can keep his living. Ric says there is still a bit of a problem. He didn’t want to say because it would worry her but if she’s going to be throwing the big bucks around---the ED letter hasn’t been destroyed. It’s still out there somewhere with Bernabe. If he decides to sell it to Lis or Don Jorge, it will annul her marriage to Don Timmy. In that case, a judge could force her to return the entire fortune, including that she’s already spent, on the house, in the earthquake aid, on Bernabe’s blackmail. Camila is stricken. “In that case, I should have slept with Don Jorge!” she says. Ric doesn’t like the sound of that. “It’s the only solution” says Camila darkly. Ric says no, “there are others.” Ric says there are others. I only told you so that you didn’t take make any dramatic actions. Camila says that her Great Grandfather obtained the concessions to the store and the mill. If they take it away from her father, after so many generations, he will die. Ric urges her to wait and see how things develop. She looks at him and says that she’s gotten him involved in so many problems. Ric says she has him and he loves he, he’s already told her so a thousand ways. Over a barking dog, Ric tells her that he’s there to help and protect her, to share [her life with her]. They embrace and his look is worried, over her shoulder.
On a long boat, the pirate that Foreman sent to gather intelligence about El Antillano has returned to give Foreman a report. He disembarks and Foreman who is chatting up a servant girl turns to him and says “what have we got? (In English and then in Spanish) “What have you found out?” The pirate says that the people on Mariana Island talked. Foreman tells him to hurry up and tell him already. The pirate says that the mother of the Antillano died and his Uncle died too and left his fortune to a servant girl that he married. El Antillano went with his Aunt and a Cousin to Mexico to get the fortune back. “To Mexico?” asks Foreman. “To a town called San Fernando” says the Pirate. “How curious, says Foreman, that’s Alberto LaFont’s town. Is that a coincidence or not?” The pirate looks doubtful.
Ursula and Fortunata are with Sofia in the Zaguan. Ursula is remarking on her mother’s daring to not only take Ric and Camila to their wedding but to be a witness. Fortunata agrees that Don Jorge will be furious. Sofia, who is sewing a quilt with Fortunata, says he already knows. Ursula asks what he said but Sofia says nothing. She knows that he’ll eventually take it out on her but she doesn’t care. She changes the subject to ask Ursula if she went to see Santiago to give him the good news (about his release) Ursula says yes, and that he didn’t even flinch when she told him about the lashes and even said that he deserved them. “He’s a different kind of man” she says admiringly. Sofia says” he’s a good boy.” Ursula says she was thinking about asking her Dad to lower the number of lashes. Fortunata agrees. Sofia says that she can try but she doubts that Jorge will listen. Ursula says she’s going to try right now and leaves, shivering with excitement. Sofia remarks that she can’t understand this sudden interest in charity from Ursula. She’s never acted this way before to aid a prisoner or help anybody. Fortunata suggests that maybe she’s changing. Dona Sofia says she doubts it. She only hopes that she isn’t thinking up some plot. Sofia gets mad at Fortunata and says that if she has the LEAST SUSPICION, that she should tell her RIGHT AWAY. It would be ….an abbbberation!...she stutters from the horror of it. [I assume she is thinking that Ursula might try to get into Santiago’s pants and thereby unknowingly commit incest. ] Fortunata is taken aback and says sure she will tell her…but…how could you think that…. Ursula shoots her a look.
Back to Foreman and the other pirate. Foreman suggests that they head over to Mexico. The pirate says no, it would be very dangerous. Foreman smiles and says that the fortune smiles on the bold [the world belongs to the audacious] and he who doesn’t risk, doesn’t gain. “And what are we going to gain from that miserable little town?” asks the pirate. Foreman says he doesn’t know but he doesn’t like coincidences. And Juancho and the boys are too close by and he doesn’t like that. The pirate says, “what if the Antillano denounces them?” Foreman says no, he doesn’t think so, he’d be denouncing himself and he’s too smart for that. Foreman asks if he found out if El Antillano’s family had any important relationships. The pirate says yes, one—Don Gaspar de Valdez. Foreman asks who he is. The pirate says he’s a priest, but the person who told him mentioned him with much respect. Foreman says among the Catholics there are priests and then there are PRIESTS. Some are of the people and some are of Rome. Foreman raises his glass and as he and the pirate agree on this point.
Ric and Camila are finally meeting with Justo, who has moved inside. He is happy to see them married and he gives them his good wishes. He says he’s sorry that he had to push Ric to marry her so soon. Ric gallantly thanks him for giving him PERMISSION to marry his daughter. He gives her a little squeeze and kisses her cheek, which leads to more kissy face between the two of them. Justo continues that he doesn’t want Vasco’s marriage to be delayed either but Ofelia says that Santiago has to take her to the altar. Camila says she understands that he’ll be released soon and a few days more shouldn’t matter. Justo says he hopes so, and maybe he will be better then too. He says he’s happy about it and that her brother promised to change, but still…Camila cuts in to add, God willing. Ric reminds her that her father needs his rest. She gets up and kisses his hand. Tears roll down her cheeks as she says, I love you Dad! Justo smiles and says I love you too.
In the kitchen, Grita is yelling once again about Santiago getting 20 lashes. “It’s going to leave him like Jesus Christ!—ALL BECAUSE OF HER.” Just then Camila and Ric descend from the upper room where Justo was and overhear her diatribe. Ric speaks up to say that Santiago did what any man would do to defend a woman’s honor. Grita starts in on him to complain about how it was Ric’s job to defend Camila when Camila cuts in and says she won’t let Rita blame Ric. Besides, she and Ric are married now. Rita now complains that she married Ric only because she couldn’t have Santiago. Ric breaks in to say that she’s insulting HIM and her sister and that he won’t take it. And if her husband continues to think of Camila, it’s Rita and Santiago’s problem not his and Camila’s. They leave. Ines upbraids Rita for her unfounded jealousy. Rita says that she’s just saying that because Santiago’s her brother. Ines says no, Rita’s constant complaints and bad humor are driving him away. Rita laughs evilly. AS IF. Ines goes on to say that everybody is sick of her constantly running down Camila. Ines tells her that she married Santiago knowing full well that he had been in love with Camila and when she returned she never once complained about you. Rita says that that isn’t true, she did. Ines gets frustrated with the conversation and walks away.Grita turns to look in the direction of the departed Camila and Ric, scowling.
Rick and Camila are walking through town. Camila speculates whether Rita’s pregnancy has made her so uptight. Ric says he doesn’t really care. What he’d like to know is if Camila still feels something for Santiago. Camila pauses and says “I loved him a lot, you know.” Ric says “sure.” She continues “I endured…everything I had to…to be able to see him again. When I returned, I felt bad, really bad because he married my sister. It made me bitter, angry. You know that the first time you had me, I was not a virgin. But it wasn’t because of Santiago. And it wasn’t because of my husband. It was because of those evil men who took me. She turns around to face him and he puts his arms around her. You were the first time I made love. And that’s not why I love you…but for many other things. And now I’ve come to love you too much, because when someone loves someone that much, they suffer. Rick has a sharp intake of breath and whispers, “Me too.” “I’m afraid to fall madly in love with you because if something should separate us, I don’t think I could bear it.” They kiss and he puts his arms around her.
Over at Mansion Mancera, Ursula is begging her father to lighten up on the lashes for Santiago. Jorge shouts no, no! But Ursula points out that Santiago is a popular guy in the town and although she knows that the offense was grave, if he is merciful with Santiago, he will not be criticized as much for taking Justo’s concessions away. Don Jorge sighs and says that he will think about it. Ursula thanks him and scurries upstairs, where the servant and Tita are. She tells the servant to take a message to Santiago at the jail that her father will reduce the sentence because she asked. The servant agrees and Ursula hustles her along reminding her to include the part giving her the credit for the reprieve.
Over at Ric’s country estate Rick Mario and Pablo are trying to figure out how they can get back Ric’s loot from Don Jorge’s house. Pablo thinks they just do a raid but Ric points out that they have only 6 men . Pablo says they can get reinforcements from Pirate central. Ric doesn’t want a direct assault with a war in the town square. The guard s will start shooting at the townsfolk and there will be a massacre. Mario asks him if he wants his cash back or not. Ric says yes, but not at the cost of innocent lives. Ric says they could be Camila’s friends or relatives. Mario says CAMILA! He’s exasperated and gets up to walk out. Ric jumps up after him and says that they have to talk. “Whenever you want…RICARDO” says Mario pointedly. Ric gives him a look and says that tonight they are going to LaFont’s and he’d like him to be there. He thumps his chest and leaves. Pablo asks Mario what’s going on. Mario says that what’s going on is that El Antillano is no longer the same. Love has made him go soft in the head. Pablo looks worried. Mario looks thoughtful.
It’s evening and Camila and Jimena are lighting candles around Camila’s house. Camila confesses to Jimena that Ric told her about the ED letter’s continued existence. Jimena drops a candle. She asks what the bottom line is. Camila fills her in on the worse case scenario—she loses all the money and she has to come up with whatever she originally had. And she won’t go back to being a servant, she’ll be in debtor’s prison. Jimena is impactada. She says they must find the letter. She suggests that maybe Vasco has an idea of where his friend might be but is just pretending not to know. Camila says no, not after what happened with their father and he knows that we need the money. Jimena thinks that Vasco thinks that Ric can take care of her family, maybe she’d better tell him that Ric lost all his loot. Camila doesn’t want to tell him, Ricardo told her all that in confidence. Jimena thinks she should tell Vasco anyway. There’s a knock at the door Camila gets excited that maybe it is Ric. Instead, a servant girl brings a letter from Ric. She opens it and reads it to Jimena. He’s not coming. She’s worried. “Something must have happened to him.”
It’s evening at Don Jorge’s and Vasco is sneaking into Ursula’s bedroom. She’s asleep but wakes up. He says he’s come to talk. He leans over her on the bed. “About what? Your upcoming wedding?” She snarks. Vasco says that she knows why he’s getting married. “Because you can’t keep your pants zipped.” She cracks. He says that he’s not in love. Ursula complains that she doesn’t care and turns away. Vasco says he’s there for another reason. He gets off the bed and stands up. He tells her that he has heard that her Dad is going to take the concessions away from his dad. Ursula says that that’s true. Vasco says that his father is ill, he just had a stroke, if they take the concessions away he’ll die. He wants her to intervene to stop him. Ursula says sorry, she can’t. Vasco says yes she can. Ursula, who gets up to light a candle, says that her mother already tried. She got very angry with him. All she got for her trouble was a slap in the face that nearly knocked out her teeth. The only thing she did get was a partial reprieve for his brother in law Santiago, “who, by the way, is very handsome.” Vasco doesn’t like the sound of this. He asks what she got him. She tells him a week in jail and 20 lashes. Vasco thinks that that isn’t such a great deal. Ursula points out than a year or more in jail. Ursula giggles that Santiago’s a strong guy and he’ll recover soon. Vasco points out that she’s barking up the wrong tree with Santiago—he’s married and besides he’s a religious guy. Ursula doesn’t think those are obstacles. He’s a man. Vasco complains that she’s trying to make him jealous. Ursula says “of course not, you don’t interest me.” Vasco says that he had hoped that when she got over her anger, they could go back to their arrangement. Vasco compares his situation (getting married) and Santiago (being married and having a baby on the way). Ursula says that it’s different. He betrayed her and she’s just getting to know Santiago. Vasco complains again that she betrayed him with her affections for Ric and the Duke. Ursula says , yeah but I’m me and you’re you. She laughs him off. Vasco gets mad and leaves in a huff. She calls after him “the keys, the keys?” But he doesn’t leave them. She puts out the candle and says to herself “He’ll be back.”
Rick is eating dinner alone. He’s already changed into his black pirate outfit. There’s a knock at the door. It’s Lis. He helps her into the room. She asks him where he went last night. She tried to ask Mario but he wouldn’t say. Ric tells her. I went to get married. Lis is super-wide eyed—impactada. She gets all twitchy. “You got married to Camila…without telling me….WHY?” Tears roll down her cheeks. Ric explains that it was a hasty decision. If he didn’t marry her secretly and quickly, Don Jorge wouldn’t have given his permission without a roll in the hay. “You won’t believe it, but he insists on his Pernada rights even though the church has forbidden it.” Lis asks if he married her as Ricardo de Salamanca Ric says no, and he asks her if she is going to tell Camila. Lis says “no, I told you could trust me. “ Ric thanks her. She asks if Ric is going to move her in there. Yes, he says, one of these days. “To your room or should we prepare her a separate one?” “to mine, responds Ric.” Lis cries some more and chokes out “of course. “ Ric goes over to comfort her. He tells her that this won’t change anything between them. She is still under his protection and he won’t abandon her. Lis thinks that Camila hates her but Ric tries to dispel her of that notion. Lis says She hates me. We tried to take her inheritance away. The inheritance that my father took away from ME. And do you know why he did it? Because he knew that I would give it to YOU. Now it’s Ric’s turn to look surprised by this confession. Lis goes on to say that now he’s recovered the fortune by marrying his widow. Ric tells her that he doesn’t want to touch a penny of Camila’s fortune. Lis tells him what’s the big deal, he’s her husband, he has the right, (although the marriage isn’t valid since he didn’t use his real name.) Ric says even though he’s married her under a false name he still did it on the altar and it is true. He returns to the theme that Camila doesn’t hate her and there’s no reason for them not to get along. Ric says he has to go and talk to his guys about a thing. He helps her out the door and tells her not to be upset and to get some rest.
As soon as she’s out the door, she pounds her cane on the floor and swears that he will regret the stupid thing he’s done.

Next time: Rico tells Justo that he knows who is the head of a gang of thieves who have been robbing the caravans and money from the crown. Justo is impactado. Also: Santiago finds out that Camila is wed, Lis plots revenge against Camila who has stolen her dad and her boyfriend; Juancho participates in a stickup but on whose behalf?
We start out with the bride and groom arriving at home and then the nice (long) romantic scene where they finally make love, with Camila obviously into it, more so than the last time. She pulls him to her. We get glimpses of them between all the red and white roses that Jimena has positioned in a million vases around the bedroom.
Quick cut to Ofelia, being dropped off at her house by Dona Sofia (who we don’t see).
Back to Camila and Ric—he’s asleep and she touches his face. He wakes up and they start to go at it again. (No words, just music).
Back at Ofelia’s Ascanio and Vasco are loading Don Justo into a coach. Justo appears to be his old self, except for his facial paralysis making it a little hard to understand him. Ofelia says she wished that she could go with him but she wants to see her son. Justo says that it’s not necessary. He tells her to tell her son to be strong and he wants her to thank him for defending Camila. Grita says she’ll be along later but Justo tells her that it’s not necessary and that he’ll be fine. They take off for Justo’s house.
Grita immediately starts pestering Ofelia to take her to see Santiago at the prison. Ofelia tells her no. Ofelia says they probably won’t let her in anyway. Grita starts complaining about her rights as his wife but Ofelia points out that she hasn’t been well of late and besides, what is she going to do there anyway, bicker with Santiago and nag him some more? Grita launches into her “Nobody likes me” speech. Ofelia shoots back that everybody is not against her but they are tired of her badmouthing her sister—“who hasn’t done anything to you.” Grita takes umbrage at this saying that her sister has ruined her life. Before, she and Santiago were happy. Ever since she came back, Santiago just isn’t the same. “Now he’s in jail, and it’s HER fault!” Ofelia shouts back that it wasn’t Camila’s fault and she’s tired of arguing. She walks away. Grita yells after her that she wants to see her husband. Ofelia yells back NO! I SAID NO! Grita stews.
Over at the Mancera Mansion, Ursula is dressed up with her red and white feathers, a servant in tow with a basket of food for Santiago. Fortunata shows up and asks her where she’s going and Ursula tells her. They exchange info about Dona Sofia. Fortunata says that the servants told her that she went out last night and came back in the wee hours of the morning. She didn’t go alone either. “You’re not going to believe it “ says Fortunata, “With Camila, Ofelia and Ricardo.” They went out and then came back according to the Coachman. Ursula asks why and Fortunata adds with excitement: “What else would a couple be doing at Mt. Carmelo in the middle of the night? Getting married!” Ursula is surprised but holds her comment when she sees the servant who had been lagging behind approach.
Back at Justo’s, Vasco and Ascanio are helping him into the house. He doesn’t want to be put back in his bedroom so they seat him at the table. He gathers the solicitous servants around and says he has an announcement to make. “Camila and Ricardo got married last night” he says. Vasco repeats the words but everybody is relieved and happy.
Over at the jailhouse, The jailer admits Ofelia, Ursula and the servant to Santiago’s cell. Santiago asks after Justo and Ofelia says he’s a little better and he’s been able to go home. Then he asks after Rita and Ofelia says she’s fine. Ofelia mentions that Ursula “intervened” with Don Jorge on his behalf. Ursula tells him the good news/bad news—he’ll be set free in a week but he’ll have to endure the public punishment of 20 lashes. Santiago takes the news with a stoic look and Ursula jumps in to say that she can try to get her father to reduce the punishment but Santiago cuts her off and says he’ll take his medicine. Ofelia turns to the contents of her basket which has food and other things “to make him stronger.” Ursula’s brought a basket full of oranges (?). Santiago smiles at Ursula and Ursula looks down demurely and has tears in her eyes, which she wipes away. [I haven’t been able to follow the discussion threads on this in the past couple of episodes—Do people think this is one of those blood—calling out to blood themes that are so popular in novleas? After all, he’s her half-brother right? Or is this Ursula just appreciating the man-flesh as usual?]
Back at Casa Camila, the newlyweds are eating breakfast with Jimena. Jimena is making a fuss over the ring and asks whether it was part of his pirate booty. Ric says no, it belonged to his mother. Jimena asks if she’s still alive but Ric says no, a little darkly, perhaps remembering suddenly how he made that deathbed promise to Mom to steal the family fortune back from that whore his uncle married (i.e. Camila). “You’ve never told me about her“chirps Camila, reaching for his hand. Rico says, “They’ll be time for that.” He changes the subject to the wedding dinner they are going to have. Camila is nervous that Don Jorge will find out and get mad. Ric says he’s going to get mad eventually. Camila says that she wants her Dad to be there. He suggests that they go visit him to see how he’s doing. Camila asks what they are going to do with the business and Ric says they might as well wait until the documents arrive. [I think this is in reference to the removal of the concession?] Camila jumps up to get her things. They both stand up as she goes. After she is some distance away, Jimena asks Ric if he really loves her. Ric sighs and replies, “More than anyone else on earth.“ Jimena says “how come I can’t find a hawt guy like you? Strong, decisive, adventurous and who loves me like crazy!” Rico suave pipes up “How ‘bout Mario?” Jimena makes a face and says he’s annoying [pesado]. He asks if she likes him and she says yes. [I think she says] why, does he like me? Ric responds non comittally, “I don’t know.”
Don Jorge is enquiring of an official if the marriage contract has been signed yet. The guy says no, nothing has shown up yet. Jorge says that’s strange. He understood that they already had done it. The guy tells him that as soon as he gets it, he’ll let him know. And “Have a nice day.” He says to Don Jorge’s departing backside.
Ric and Camila are promenading next to the river on the way to Justo’s house. Ric says he has to go back to his house to talk to Lis. Camila asks whether Lis will be angry. Ric says no, she’s been in a conciliatory mood. I couldn’t hear the next thing he said but suddenly he kisses her and she teases him by running away a short distance. He catches her and kisses her. He asks if she is coming to his house and Camila says she thought he was going to go to her house. He pretends to put his foot down that she should go to HIS house, because he’s the man. She assents and Ric says, and anyway, you be better protected from HIM—as Don Jorge walks up at that moment, with a squad of his personal guard. Don Jorge greets them regally and asks what’s up. Ric says that he’s happy and Don J asks after the stolen fortune. Ric smiles and says not yet, but he trusts he will. He then gallantly introduces Camila as HIS WIFE. Dona Camila Lopez de Carvajal. Don J stiffens and says “future wife?” Ric says nope, “we got married yesterday.” Don J points out that he didn’t give his permission. “But the monks of Mt. Carmelo did” says Ric. Don Jorge says OK, bids them goodbye and leaves very quickly, trailed by the guards. Over loud, dramatic music, Camila is panicked and is afraid that Don J is going to take out his anger on her Dad. Then she’s worried that he’ll do something to Ric. Ric comforts her and says that he can take care of himself and that she needs to have faith him. After all, he’s the dread pirate EL Antillano and he’s not going to let some Podunk lord beat him. This is an occasion for another kissing session.
When Don Jorge arrives home in a bad humor, Sofia is there to greet him with little Tita. She announces that Camila and Ric are married. When he asks how she knows, Sofia tells him that she was one of the witnesses. Don J is livid and says “How dare you?” “In the same manner that you dared to slap me…and in front of your daughter” says Sofia archly. She directs the servant to take Tita. “Is this war?” asks Don J. “An eye for an eye?” “and tooth for tooth” says Sofia. Don J sizes her up. Sofia stares right back at him.
Ursula and Ofelia are walking through the [NOISY!] Plaza after visiting Santiago in jail. Ofelia thanks Ursula and says that she shouldn’t risk it anymore since her dad will be angry when he finds out. Ursula says not to worry, and besides, she’s been remiss in not doing charitable work and it now seems like a good time to get more involved in the community. [Especially when a hunky guy is involved!] Ofelia says that she hasn’t thought of it that way and she’s glad that Ursula feels that way. Ursula takes the opportunity to ask Ofelia if the rumors are true that Camila and Ric got married at Mt. Carmelo. Ofelia says yes. Ursula continues “to avoid that my father sleep with her?” Ofelia replies again, yes. Ursula remarks on how there will be problems when her Dad finds out. Ofelia says there will be problems in any event. The two women bid eachother goodbye and Ursula takes off.
Camila and Ric have arrived at the store. Camila has already checked in with Ascanio to see how he’s doing with the accounts. Ines updates them on how things are going. Vasco is at the mill but he’s worried that they will take everything from them. Camila assures Ines that she still has money and that nobody is going to go hungry. Ines smiles gratefully. Ines suddenly says that she understands that if they lose the concession, they can sell the properties and start over. Ines seems very happy at the prospect. Camila smiles too but Ric gravely takes her aside and leads Camila out of the store.
Don J is now with Marcelino, the notary in his office. He wants him to write up the notice removing the concession for the mill and the store from Justo. Marcelino starts to whimper that the people will think... Don Jorge butts in that he doesn’t care—Here they will do as he says. Marcelino accedes to Don J’s wishes. Marcelino then asks if he wants him to write up a “for sale” notice for the mill and the store. Don J says no, he’s going to give him to his friends. Marcelino tries to interject that usually in these cases…Don J cuts him off again. He doesn’t want to hear anymore. This is personal. Either Marcelino will do what he says or he can look for another job. Marcelino backs down again. The notice should be delivered tomorrow sharp. Marcelino says of course.
Camila and Ric are now walking away from the store. Camila is thinking that maybe she could buy the concessions herself. Ric is still grim and she asks him if he is opposed to the idea. “It’s my father” says Camila. Ric says no, it’s not that. It’s just that this is a bad time. He doesn’t have any money. He’s sure that the ones who took it are LaFont and his buddies but he doesn’t have the proof he needs. Camila says that SHE has money and that she’ll spend every last dime to make sure that her father can keep his living. Ric says there is still a bit of a problem. He didn’t want to say because it would worry her but if she’s going to be throwing the big bucks around---the ED letter hasn’t been destroyed. It’s still out there somewhere with Bernabe. If he decides to sell it to Lis or Don Jorge, it will annul her marriage to Don Timmy. In that case, a judge could force her to return the entire fortune, including that she’s already spent, on the house, in the earthquake aid, on Bernabe’s blackmail. Camila is stricken. “In that case, I should have slept with Don Jorge!” she says. Ric doesn’t like the sound of that. “It’s the only solution” says Camila darkly. Ric says no, “there are others.” Ric says there are others. I only told you so that you didn’t take make any dramatic actions. Camila says that her Great Grandfather obtained the concessions to the store and the mill. If they take it away from her father, after so many generations, he will die. Ric urges her to wait and see how things develop. She looks at him and says that she’s gotten him involved in so many problems. Ric says she has him and he loves he, he’s already told her so a thousand ways. Over a barking dog, Ric tells her that he’s there to help and protect her, to share [her life with her]. They embrace and his look is worried, over her shoulder.
On a long boat, the pirate that Foreman sent to gather intelligence about El Antillano has returned to give Foreman a report. He disembarks and Foreman who is chatting up a servant girl turns to him and says “what have we got? (In English and then in Spanish) “What have you found out?” The pirate says that the people on Mariana Island talked. Foreman tells him to hurry up and tell him already. The pirate says that the mother of the Antillano died and his Uncle died too and left his fortune to a servant girl that he married. El Antillano went with his Aunt and a Cousin to Mexico to get the fortune back. “To Mexico?” asks Foreman. “To a town called San Fernando” says the Pirate. “How curious, says Foreman, that’s Alberto LaFont’s town. Is that a coincidence or not?” The pirate looks doubtful.

Ric and Camila are finally meeting with Justo, who has moved inside. He is happy to see them married and he gives them his good wishes. He says he’s sorry that he had to push Ric to marry her so soon. Ric gallantly thanks him for giving him PERMISSION to marry his daughter. He gives her a little squeeze and kisses her cheek, which leads to more kissy face between the two of them. Justo continues that he doesn’t want Vasco’s marriage to be delayed either but Ofelia says that Santiago has to take her to the altar. Camila says she understands that he’ll be released soon and a few days more shouldn’t matter. Justo says he hopes so, and maybe he will be better then too. He says he’s happy about it and that her brother promised to change, but still…Camila cuts in to add, God willing. Ric reminds her that her father needs his rest. She gets up and kisses his hand. Tears roll down her cheeks as she says, I love you Dad! Justo smiles and says I love you too.
In the kitchen, Grita is yelling once again about Santiago getting 20 lashes. “It’s going to leave him like Jesus Christ!—ALL BECAUSE OF HER.” Just then Camila and Ric descend from the upper room where Justo was and overhear her diatribe. Ric speaks up to say that Santiago did what any man would do to defend a woman’s honor. Grita starts in on him to complain about how it was Ric’s job to defend Camila when Camila cuts in and says she won’t let Rita blame Ric. Besides, she and Ric are married now. Rita now complains that she married Ric only because she couldn’t have Santiago. Ric breaks in to say that she’s insulting HIM and her sister and that he won’t take it. And if her husband continues to think of Camila, it’s Rita and Santiago’s problem not his and Camila’s. They leave. Ines upbraids Rita for her unfounded jealousy. Rita says that she’s just saying that because Santiago’s her brother. Ines says no, Rita’s constant complaints and bad humor are driving him away. Rita laughs evilly. AS IF. Ines goes on to say that everybody is sick of her constantly running down Camila. Ines tells her that she married Santiago knowing full well that he had been in love with Camila and when she returned she never once complained about you. Rita says that that isn’t true, she did. Ines gets frustrated with the conversation and walks away.Grita turns to look in the direction of the departed Camila and Ric, scowling.
Rick and Camila are walking through town. Camila speculates whether Rita’s pregnancy has made her so uptight. Ric says he doesn’t really care. What he’d like to know is if Camila still feels something for Santiago. Camila pauses and says “I loved him a lot, you know.” Ric says “sure.” She continues “I endured…everything I had to…to be able to see him again. When I returned, I felt bad, really bad because he married my sister. It made me bitter, angry. You know that the first time you had me, I was not a virgin. But it wasn’t because of Santiago. And it wasn’t because of my husband. It was because of those evil men who took me. She turns around to face him and he puts his arms around her. You were the first time I made love. And that’s not why I love you…but for many other things. And now I’ve come to love you too much, because when someone loves someone that much, they suffer. Rick has a sharp intake of breath and whispers, “Me too.” “I’m afraid to fall madly in love with you because if something should separate us, I don’t think I could bear it.” They kiss and he puts his arms around her.
Over at Mansion Mancera, Ursula is begging her father to lighten up on the lashes for Santiago. Jorge shouts no, no! But Ursula points out that Santiago is a popular guy in the town and although she knows that the offense was grave, if he is merciful with Santiago, he will not be criticized as much for taking Justo’s concessions away. Don Jorge sighs and says that he will think about it. Ursula thanks him and scurries upstairs, where the servant and Tita are. She tells the servant to take a message to Santiago at the jail that her father will reduce the sentence because she asked. The servant agrees and Ursula hustles her along reminding her to include the part giving her the credit for the reprieve.
Over at Ric’s country estate Rick Mario and Pablo are trying to figure out how they can get back Ric’s loot from Don Jorge’s house. Pablo thinks they just do a raid but Ric points out that they have only 6 men . Pablo says they can get reinforcements from Pirate central. Ric doesn’t want a direct assault with a war in the town square. The guard s will start shooting at the townsfolk and there will be a massacre. Mario asks him if he wants his cash back or not. Ric says yes, but not at the cost of innocent lives. Ric says they could be Camila’s friends or relatives. Mario says CAMILA! He’s exasperated and gets up to walk out. Ric jumps up after him and says that they have to talk. “Whenever you want…RICARDO” says Mario pointedly. Ric gives him a look and says that tonight they are going to LaFont’s and he’d like him to be there. He thumps his chest and leaves. Pablo asks Mario what’s going on. Mario says that what’s going on is that El Antillano is no longer the same. Love has made him go soft in the head. Pablo looks worried. Mario looks thoughtful.
It’s evening and Camila and Jimena are lighting candles around Camila’s house. Camila confesses to Jimena that Ric told her about the ED letter’s continued existence. Jimena drops a candle. She asks what the bottom line is. Camila fills her in on the worse case scenario—she loses all the money and she has to come up with whatever she originally had. And she won’t go back to being a servant, she’ll be in debtor’s prison. Jimena is impactada. She says they must find the letter. She suggests that maybe Vasco has an idea of where his friend might be but is just pretending not to know. Camila says no, not after what happened with their father and he knows that we need the money. Jimena thinks that Vasco thinks that Ric can take care of her family, maybe she’d better tell him that Ric lost all his loot. Camila doesn’t want to tell him, Ricardo told her all that in confidence. Jimena thinks she should tell Vasco anyway. There’s a knock at the door Camila gets excited that maybe it is Ric. Instead, a servant girl brings a letter from Ric. She opens it and reads it to Jimena. He’s not coming. She’s worried. “Something must have happened to him.”
It’s evening at Don Jorge’s and Vasco is sneaking into Ursula’s bedroom. She’s asleep but wakes up. He says he’s come to talk. He leans over her on the bed. “About what? Your upcoming wedding?” She snarks. Vasco says that she knows why he’s getting married. “Because you can’t keep your pants zipped.” She cracks. He says that he’s not in love. Ursula complains that she doesn’t care and turns away. Vasco says he’s there for another reason. He gets off the bed and stands up. He tells her that he has heard that her Dad is going to take the concessions away from his dad. Ursula says that that’s true. Vasco says that his father is ill, he just had a stroke, if they take the concessions away he’ll die. He wants her to intervene to stop him. Ursula says sorry, she can’t. Vasco says yes she can. Ursula, who gets up to light a candle, says that her mother already tried. She got very angry with him. All she got for her trouble was a slap in the face that nearly knocked out her teeth. The only thing she did get was a partial reprieve for his brother in law Santiago, “who, by the way, is very handsome.” Vasco doesn’t like the sound of this. He asks what she got him. She tells him a week in jail and 20 lashes. Vasco thinks that that isn’t such a great deal. Ursula points out than a year or more in jail. Ursula giggles that Santiago’s a strong guy and he’ll recover soon. Vasco points out that she’s barking up the wrong tree with Santiago—he’s married and besides he’s a religious guy. Ursula doesn’t think those are obstacles. He’s a man. Vasco complains that she’s trying to make him jealous. Ursula says “of course not, you don’t interest me.” Vasco says that he had hoped that when she got over her anger, they could go back to their arrangement. Vasco compares his situation (getting married) and Santiago (being married and having a baby on the way). Ursula says that it’s different. He betrayed her and she’s just getting to know Santiago. Vasco complains again that she betrayed him with her affections for Ric and the Duke. Ursula says , yeah but I’m me and you’re you. She laughs him off. Vasco gets mad and leaves in a huff. She calls after him “the keys, the keys?” But he doesn’t leave them. She puts out the candle and says to herself “He’ll be back.”
Rick is eating dinner alone. He’s already changed into his black pirate outfit. There’s a knock at the door. It’s Lis. He helps her into the room. She asks him where he went last night. She tried to ask Mario but he wouldn’t say. Ric tells her. I went to get married. Lis is super-wide eyed—impactada. She gets all twitchy. “You got married to Camila…without telling me….WHY?” Tears roll down her cheeks. Ric explains that it was a hasty decision. If he didn’t marry her secretly and quickly, Don Jorge wouldn’t have given his permission without a roll in the hay. “You won’t believe it, but he insists on his Pernada rights even though the church has forbidden it.” Lis asks if he married her as Ricardo de Salamanca Ric says no, and he asks her if she is going to tell Camila. Lis says “no, I told you could trust me. “ Ric thanks her. She asks if Ric is going to move her in there. Yes, he says, one of these days. “To your room or should we prepare her a separate one?” “to mine, responds Ric.” Lis cries some more and chokes out “of course. “ Ric goes over to comfort her. He tells her that this won’t change anything between them. She is still under his protection and he won’t abandon her. Lis thinks that Camila hates her but Ric tries to dispel her of that notion. Lis says She hates me. We tried to take her inheritance away. The inheritance that my father took away from ME. And do you know why he did it? Because he knew that I would give it to YOU. Now it’s Ric’s turn to look surprised by this confession. Lis goes on to say that now he’s recovered the fortune by marrying his widow. Ric tells her that he doesn’t want to touch a penny of Camila’s fortune. Lis tells him what’s the big deal, he’s her husband, he has the right, (although the marriage isn’t valid since he didn’t use his real name.) Ric says even though he’s married her under a false name he still did it on the altar and it is true. He returns to the theme that Camila doesn’t hate her and there’s no reason for them not to get along. Ric says he has to go and talk to his guys about a thing. He helps her out the door and tells her not to be upset and to get some rest.
As soon as she’s out the door, she pounds her cane on the floor and swears that he will regret the stupid thing he’s done.

Next time: Rico tells Justo that he knows who is the head of a gang of thieves who have been robbing the caravans and money from the crown. Justo is impactado. Also: Santiago finds out that Camila is wed, Lis plots revenge against Camila who has stolen her dad and her boyfriend; Juancho participates in a stickup but on whose behalf?

GuaposThursday 2/7 In which Regina becomes a soccer (grand) mom and Santa Claus is coming to town
As promised, I am posting a quickie recap so everyone can chime in with notes.
I just watched the Thursday episode, but without closed captions, so I'll do my best to put in some highlights.
Connie is having an affair with Milena now. This episode seems to be blissfully Andrea-free.
Mili finds out that Hugo can walk and gets really angry and calls him the biggest liar on earth. She doesn't want anything to do with him. But later, she confides in Pandrosa, his alter ego.
Alex tells Regina that he really wants Mili. This character change is unmotivated by anything I have seen on screen. Anyone?
Anyway, Regina is happy, but she warns him that he better not hurt her Mili.
Mili and her other friend go to the Tejano bar again and Alex shows up. There is another fistfight. I wasn't watching closely during this scene, so I don't really know what was happening, but I assume jealousy was involved.
Regina is now the biggest soccer fan in town. She goes to watch Mili and Rorgan play. Who shows up to play goalie? None other than our Alex.
There's a scene where Valeria seems to be mooning over a radio where that awful singing is coming out of it again.
Still no money returned by Karla, and it looks like it's going to be a grim Christmas at the orphanage. Mili and her friend go there for Christmas, and Mili says how much she misses the cooking. But they are all sad about how there are no presents for the kids. Seems like Horacio is making Socorro realize that Karla took the money?
There's an awkward Christmas gathering back at the mansion, where Connie and Luciana are hosting Milena and Bobby. Cringe! They all wonder where Alex is. I believe this is the scene where they played yet another theme-music ripoff from Amar: the orchestra of doom, or OOD.
Cut to the orphanage: Alex shows up dressed as Santa and saves the day.

Al Diablo Con Los Guapos #13, Wednesday 2-07: Have you seen "Titanic"?
Looks like we're starting with the grudge match between the two parishes--Padre Manuel's and Padre Thatotherguy's-- "Eternos Rivales". Hm, wait…none of those guys on the field look like Mili…oops, never mind, it's the USA vs. Mexico game, which is pushing El Show back to the end of the evening. Ah, well, at least I picked up some fútbol vocabulary:
La cancha = the field
Falta = foul
Patada = kick
Árbitro = referee
Tiro de esquina = corner kick
El arco = the goal (in the physical sense)
Fuera de area = off sides (as close as I can figure--they didn't appear to be talking about anyone who'd gone off the field)
Howard "El Pato" = Howard The Duck (USA goalkeeper with the bright yellow shirt)
So now, on to the show…
Mili and "El Pandroso" ("guy with long, unkempt hair and long, unkempt beard"; the artist formerly known as Homeless!Hugo) are enjoying their tortas al fresco, when they're interrupted by Alejandro. There's some fuss over whether he's her "friend" or her "boyfriend" and Alejandro wonders how many guys Mili's stringing along. Braulio comes over and fakes that Pandroso comes over every night for leftovers. Alejandro says that Pandroso is to get no more table scraps and storms off. Mili tells Braulio she owes him one and he tells her to get in the house. Braulio then takes Pandroso over to sneak back in without anyone seeing.
Mili goes to her room, griping about Alejandro and she and Lina decide to (finally) count the money for the Convent/Orphanage Christmas Eve Party Fund (COCEPF). It's 3K pesos, the same amount that Karla stole from Socorro to give to Damian. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? The gals are quite pleased with themselves.
Socorro's crying in the kitchen over the missing money. Mili and Lina come in and Rorgan explains what's up. Mili asks if Karla has anything to say to her mom and Karla uses this as an opportunity to accuse Mili of taking the money. Karla says she saw her do it. Socorro at first believes it, but Mili says she didn't do it. Socorro suddenly realizes that it must have been Karla. Now she's really upset and Karla won't look her in the eye and tell her the truth (or anything, for that matter). Mili can't take it any more and says she took the money. She hands over the 3K from the COCEPF. Socorro's mad at Mili now and leaves the kitchen with Horacio in her wake.
Luciana and Constancio are in bed (doing absolutely nothing) when the phone rings. Constancio reaches over Luciana to pick it up before she does. He covers the mouthpiece and tells her it's Milena, she's crying, she knows Eugenio left her. Constancio told Milena that Luciana didn't go with him, but he thought Luciana might want to talk to her. Heh. No way, dude. Constancio tells Milena that Luciana's "indisposed" and tells her they're both sorry about what happened and if she needs anything, etc. He tosses the phone to Luciana and says he hopes now she can sleep well. As he turns over he smushes his ecstatically grinning face into the pillow where Luciana can't see.
Mili, Lina, Karla, and Rorgan are left in the kitchen. Mili said she'd rather Socorro think she's a thief than Karla. Now Rorgan knows the truth too, since Karla's not bothering to deny it. Mili says Karla had better get the money back from Damian or all three of them will rat her out. Exit Karla. Rorgan doesn't think she'll ever give it back. Horacio wants to tell Socorro the truth, but Mili says no. Rorgan joins the COCEPF executive board and says the gals won't have to replace the money alone.
Karla now goes to Damian to get the money back and the exchange is hilarious:
D: What? You're asking me to return the money?
K: Of course! You said you were going to give it back "tonight."
D: And it's already night? Wow, time flies.
He explains he doesn't have the money as he lost it in a "friendly" game. Then he caps it all off by asking if she doesn't have any more money to lend him. Of course, she doesn't. He swears he'll get the money back "tomorrow."
Time passes, apparently, as we see Mili and Alejandro pass each other in the hallway (without sucking face); Valeria and her model pals practicing their runway walk outside; Alejandro on the computer (he's probably reading up on seduction tips for the discerning, yet obnoxious, gentleman) while Bobby writes his latest hit and Lina cleans up and looks on adoringly; Braulio decorates a 12-foot Christmas tree; Mili and Lina un-decorate said tree; Luciana looks at the plane tickets to Rome and cries; Mili, Lina, and Rorgan clean windshields and earn practically nothing; Braulio discovers the un-decorating of the tree (only on one side and near the bottom, hee hee); the Pink Ladies put up a tiny tree in the kitchen and Socorro snubs Mili yet again; the DF decorates.
Valeria's model pals invite Alejandro to the show, but Valeria tries to keep him from going by inviting Andrea and telling the other girls that Alejandro's taken. Bobby comes in and Alejandro invites him to come along, but Valeria rather rudely un-invites him. How did Bobby go from being practically ignored by Valeria to being so detested?
In addition to the other seasonal changes, the Pink Ladies are now in blue. Socorro is still angry at Mili and won't wash Regina's dishes since Mili has hands and can do it herself. Mili sadly says she'll do it later since she's got to get back and once she leaves, Socorro sticks the dishes in the sink.
Horacio is still after Karla to tell Socorro the truth. He says Socorro's been treating Mili like a "chinche" (bedbug, or just generic pest) for days and Mili doesn't deserve it. Plus Karla hasn't returned the money. He yells at her that she's being used and doesn't even realize it. Karla's like "whatever." Horacio tells her if she steals again, he'll tell Socorro the truth.
Alejandro accosts Mili in the hallway, dragging her into his room. He says he's had enough of her ignoring him. He's going to tell the whole house that she came into his room to seduce him and then when he came out of the shower, naked, he found her waiting for him. Mili points out that it won't be convincing since he's not naked. Oh, but Alejandro can fix that. As the strip show starts, Mili turns her back and covers her eyes. Yeah, because for that much naked just one or the other won't do.
Rocky and Lina are in the girls' room talking about how little money is in the COCEPF. Lina's really upset that Karla is so "campante" about it all (chill, fresh, not bothered). Lina says she's "entripado" (something about "guts", twisting guts?) every time she sees that "mechuda" (uncombed--I know she's talking about Karla, but that just doesn't fit).
Alejandro's down to his white boxers (goes nice with the tan) and Mili still won't look. She's trying to get the keys without looking. Now Alejandro wants to "talk" which she won't do until he covers up. Oh, but if she's not looking then he might as well keep undressing. Mili doesn't want that either. She says she'll talk. Alejandro sits her on the bed and she takes the opportunity to pull him down onto the bed, get the keys, and go running out of the room. He gets his pants on halfway and goes chasing her, pants around the ankles, right into Hugo's room! Mili tells Hugo that Alejandro came after her in the hallway, just like that, saying "Come here, little girl, I'm going to…" but she won't finish because it would be rude. Alejandro's amazed that Hugo would believe her, but Hugo points out he was running around half-pantsless. Alejandro storms out of the room. Mili checks to see that he's gone and then tries to leave. Hugo complains she hasn't been to see him for days and Mili rolls her eyes that here's another guy after her.
Downstairs, Valeria and her model friends talk about Valeria's Secret Admirer while Bobby pretends to read the paper and eavesdrops. Rorgan comes in to announce that the car is ready. Bobby wishes Valeria luck on the runway and Valeria replies "Oh, were you there? I didn't notice." Pobre de Bobby. Alejandro comes downstairs and tells Bobby that Andrea's meeting him at the show. For no apparent reason, he asks Bobby if they've heard from Eugenio, which they haven't. These two paragons of manhood now speculate that the woman Bobby's dad went off with must be a zorra (tart, slut, husband-stealer).
We cut from that scene to Luciana getting her hair done. Milena walks into the same salon for a manicure. She sees Luciana and yells loud enough for everyone to hear that "this woman" is the reason her husband left her. Oh, please, she didn't even go with him.
Hugo asks Mili if Braulio has forbidden her to see him (of course not, no one "forbids" our plucky protagonista anything) since Braulio warned him that Mili might take advantage. Of what? Mili wonders. Money. Oops, wrong answer. Mili starts to tell him where he can stick his money. Mili says she hasn't been to see him because he's a liar and was trying to deceive her. She asks for his hands and pulls him out of the chair. He keeps up the pretense that he's paralyzed and falls to the floor. She gives him a few kicks and tells him to get up. Hugo tells her that the time she came in and he wasn't there it was because Braulio had taken him to the cemetery to see his mom and his girlfriend. And of course, he didn't take the motorized wheelchair because it's too big and too heavy. Now she feels bad and goes to see if he's ok. Damian and Braulio show up just then and Damian blames Mili and orders her out. Damian and Braulio pick Hugo up and put him back in the chair. Once they do and Mili leaves, Hugo tells Damian that Mili's his friend and that he doesn't want Damian to talk to her like that again. He tells them both it was an accident, he fell out of the chair, and tells Damian to get out. He tells Braulio to stay, though. Braulio says "So, she found out you can walk and now you want me to help you keep lying to her, right?" Yep.
Horacio comes to the runway show, but Rorgan tells him they can't get in without invitations. Rocky mentions that Valeria's friends were saying that some important designers were going to be there. Designers that "se les caían la mano" ("their hands fell"; judging from his hand gesture and the resultant hijinx, he means "gay"). Horacio calls him a genius and says they've got to get to a store before it closes.
Milagros comes to talk to Damian. She gives him the "be a better dad, encourage Hugo" pep talk. Damian doesn't think Hugo will listen to him. Mili tells him to yell until Hugo does listen.
Backstage, the gals are getting ready for the show. Their coach is upset because their hair isn't done yet and the girls say the stylists haven't gotten there yet.
Cut to the door, where Rorgan and Horacio are pretending to be famous stylists. Modeling Coach comes outside just then and gives the door guy a hard time for not letting them in, as they're urgently needed. Quick wardrobe rundown, Rorgan is wearing a baby blue hat, hot pink print shirt, white and silver belt, and bright blue pants tucked into pink cowboy boots; Horacio is wearing mirror sunglasses with pink frames, a dark purple fuzzy scarf, a white shirt with pink splotches on it, red pants, and red shoes. I know they're trying to telegraph "gay" but it looks more like "fashion challenged."
Mili goes back to Hugo's room asking what she needs to do for him to forgive her. Hugo wants Mili to pose for him, like the actress in Titanic. Of course, Mili's never seen it, so Hugo explains it…except for the part where she's posing nude.
Backstage, Horacio and Rorgan make a mess of some poor model's hair, claiming it's the latest style from Paris. Modeling Coach forbids Horacio from touching anyone else's hair. He tells them to move on to "the rest of the girls"…in other words, Valeria and her friends. Valeria claims that there's an outfit missing to distract Modeling Coach so she can pull Rorgan aside and fire him. She kicks him and Horacio out.
Mili, Lina, Karla, and Socorro are having dinner in the kitchen. Socorro is still ignoring Mili. Mili says she's going to be painted "like the woman in Titanic." Lina explains the naked part and Mili is scandalized.
The runway show commences, in slow-mo. The girls are all wearing lingerie (not "underwear" as previously advertised) and no one falls off the stage (awww, too bad). Rorgan and Horacio stand in the back and watch.
Mili confronts Hugo about the naked thing. Mili, that idiot, already promised to do it without knowing all the details. Hugo argues that it's "art," which yeah, it is, but that doesn't mean he's not also taking advantage of her. Mili says if he wants to paint her, she'll have clothes on. If he wants a naked model, go ask Karla. Hugo asks Mili if she's a virgin…for no reason, he's just asking. He figures she is, but he never explains why he asked in the first place. Mili says they're not friends anymore and leaves the room.
The next morning, Constancio gripes Luciana out because Valeria modeled after all, even though he told her not to. The two of them have an argument about "respect" and whether either of them taught Valeria what it means. Constancio warns Luciana that if she cheats on him again, something will happen to her. He asks if she knows how much insurance money he'll collect if she's run over by a car. Nasty.
Mili asks Regina about the whole naked painting thing…in general. Regina gives a PSA about art and the beauty of the female form. She shows Mili the painting, "La Venus del Espejo." Mili agrees it's a beautiful painting. Regina next shows Mili Goya's "La Maja Desnuda." Mili comments on the model's hips, which makes Regina laugh. Mili agrees there's nothing dirty about these types of pictures and explains that she asked because Hugo wants to paint her like Goya's Maja. Alejandro walks in and hears this last bit.
Rorgan begs Valeria to forgive him and un-fire him. He tries the "you're like my family" bit, the "I love you" bit, but no dice. He tells her he'll go, but first he wants to tell her she was like a goddess last night, the most beautiful of them all and how he was so proud that she's his boss. That does the trick. She wants the car brought around at 6 to go to the gym.
Alejandro comes to visit Hugo. Hugo asks Alejandro to leave Mili alone because he's interested in her. Alejandro says he's interested in her too, which is news to Hugo.
Regina makes a field trip down to Valeria's room. Valeria's got the radio turned up, waiting for another message from her Secret Admirer. Regina asks if he at least sings well. Valeria says his singing makes her melt. Regina reminisces about how her admirers used to send poetry and she used to melt. Bobby starts singing and Valeria gets all excited. He's singing Alejandro Sanz's "Si tu me miras". Regina says he's not bad (I agree; my main complaint is that his voice sounds forced, like he's trying too hard).
Milena comes to visit Constancio. I'll spare you the pleasantries and cut to the chase--she tells him she's lonely and she wants to have an affair with Constancio to get back at Luciana. Constancio's up for it, no pun intended.
Hugo tells Alejandro that Mili's not a one-night-stand, she's for life. He tells Alejandro to get out of the way, he's in love with her. Alejandro says that he loves her too. Right then Mili opens the door and asks what they were talking about.
Tomorrow: Alejandro decides he wants Mili, not Andrea.

So now, on to the show…
Mili and "El Pandroso" ("guy with long, unkempt hair and long, unkempt beard"; the artist formerly known as Homeless!Hugo) are enjoying their tortas al fresco, when they're interrupted by Alejandro. There's some fuss over whether he's her "friend" or her "boyfriend" and Alejandro wonders how many guys Mili's stringing along. Braulio comes over and fakes that Pandroso comes over every night for leftovers. Alejandro says that Pandroso is to get no more table scraps and storms off. Mili tells Braulio she owes him one and he tells her to get in the house. Braulio then takes Pandroso over to sneak back in without anyone seeing.
Mili goes to her room, griping about Alejandro and she and Lina decide to (finally) count the money for the Convent/Orphanage Christmas Eve Party Fund (COCEPF). It's 3K pesos, the same amount that Karla stole from Socorro to give to Damian. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? The gals are quite pleased with themselves.
Socorro's crying in the kitchen over the missing money. Mili and Lina come in and Rorgan explains what's up. Mili asks if Karla has anything to say to her mom and Karla uses this as an opportunity to accuse Mili of taking the money. Karla says she saw her do it. Socorro at first believes it, but Mili says she didn't do it. Socorro suddenly realizes that it must have been Karla. Now she's really upset and Karla won't look her in the eye and tell her the truth (or anything, for that matter). Mili can't take it any more and says she took the money. She hands over the 3K from the COCEPF. Socorro's mad at Mili now and leaves the kitchen with Horacio in her wake.
Luciana and Constancio are in bed (doing absolutely nothing) when the phone rings. Constancio reaches over Luciana to pick it up before she does. He covers the mouthpiece and tells her it's Milena, she's crying, she knows Eugenio left her. Constancio told Milena that Luciana didn't go with him, but he thought Luciana might want to talk to her. Heh. No way, dude. Constancio tells Milena that Luciana's "indisposed" and tells her they're both sorry about what happened and if she needs anything, etc. He tosses the phone to Luciana and says he hopes now she can sleep well. As he turns over he smushes his ecstatically grinning face into the pillow where Luciana can't see.
Mili, Lina, Karla, and Rorgan are left in the kitchen. Mili said she'd rather Socorro think she's a thief than Karla. Now Rorgan knows the truth too, since Karla's not bothering to deny it. Mili says Karla had better get the money back from Damian or all three of them will rat her out. Exit Karla. Rorgan doesn't think she'll ever give it back. Horacio wants to tell Socorro the truth, but Mili says no. Rorgan joins the COCEPF executive board and says the gals won't have to replace the money alone.
Karla now goes to Damian to get the money back and the exchange is hilarious:
D: What? You're asking me to return the money?
K: Of course! You said you were going to give it back "tonight."
D: And it's already night? Wow, time flies.
He explains he doesn't have the money as he lost it in a "friendly" game. Then he caps it all off by asking if she doesn't have any more money to lend him. Of course, she doesn't. He swears he'll get the money back "tomorrow."
Time passes, apparently, as we see Mili and Alejandro pass each other in the hallway (without sucking face); Valeria and her model pals practicing their runway walk outside; Alejandro on the computer (he's probably reading up on seduction tips for the discerning, yet obnoxious, gentleman) while Bobby writes his latest hit and Lina cleans up and looks on adoringly; Braulio decorates a 12-foot Christmas tree; Mili and Lina un-decorate said tree; Luciana looks at the plane tickets to Rome and cries; Mili, Lina, and Rorgan clean windshields and earn practically nothing; Braulio discovers the un-decorating of the tree (only on one side and near the bottom, hee hee); the Pink Ladies put up a tiny tree in the kitchen and Socorro snubs Mili yet again; the DF decorates.
Valeria's model pals invite Alejandro to the show, but Valeria tries to keep him from going by inviting Andrea and telling the other girls that Alejandro's taken. Bobby comes in and Alejandro invites him to come along, but Valeria rather rudely un-invites him. How did Bobby go from being practically ignored by Valeria to being so detested?
In addition to the other seasonal changes, the Pink Ladies are now in blue. Socorro is still angry at Mili and won't wash Regina's dishes since Mili has hands and can do it herself. Mili sadly says she'll do it later since she's got to get back and once she leaves, Socorro sticks the dishes in the sink.
Horacio is still after Karla to tell Socorro the truth. He says Socorro's been treating Mili like a "chinche" (bedbug, or just generic pest) for days and Mili doesn't deserve it. Plus Karla hasn't returned the money. He yells at her that she's being used and doesn't even realize it. Karla's like "whatever." Horacio tells her if she steals again, he'll tell Socorro the truth.
Alejandro accosts Mili in the hallway, dragging her into his room. He says he's had enough of her ignoring him. He's going to tell the whole house that she came into his room to seduce him and then when he came out of the shower, naked, he found her waiting for him. Mili points out that it won't be convincing since he's not naked. Oh, but Alejandro can fix that. As the strip show starts, Mili turns her back and covers her eyes. Yeah, because for that much naked just one or the other won't do.
Rocky and Lina are in the girls' room talking about how little money is in the COCEPF. Lina's really upset that Karla is so "campante" about it all (chill, fresh, not bothered). Lina says she's "entripado" (something about "guts", twisting guts?) every time she sees that "mechuda" (uncombed--I know she's talking about Karla, but that just doesn't fit).
Alejandro's down to his white boxers (goes nice with the tan) and Mili still won't look. She's trying to get the keys without looking. Now Alejandro wants to "talk" which she won't do until he covers up. Oh, but if she's not looking then he might as well keep undressing. Mili doesn't want that either. She says she'll talk. Alejandro sits her on the bed and she takes the opportunity to pull him down onto the bed, get the keys, and go running out of the room. He gets his pants on halfway and goes chasing her, pants around the ankles, right into Hugo's room! Mili tells Hugo that Alejandro came after her in the hallway, just like that, saying "Come here, little girl, I'm going to…" but she won't finish because it would be rude. Alejandro's amazed that Hugo would believe her, but Hugo points out he was running around half-pantsless. Alejandro storms out of the room. Mili checks to see that he's gone and then tries to leave. Hugo complains she hasn't been to see him for days and Mili rolls her eyes that here's another guy after her.
Downstairs, Valeria and her model friends talk about Valeria's Secret Admirer while Bobby pretends to read the paper and eavesdrops. Rorgan comes in to announce that the car is ready. Bobby wishes Valeria luck on the runway and Valeria replies "Oh, were you there? I didn't notice." Pobre de Bobby. Alejandro comes downstairs and tells Bobby that Andrea's meeting him at the show. For no apparent reason, he asks Bobby if they've heard from Eugenio, which they haven't. These two paragons of manhood now speculate that the woman Bobby's dad went off with must be a zorra (tart, slut, husband-stealer).
We cut from that scene to Luciana getting her hair done. Milena walks into the same salon for a manicure. She sees Luciana and yells loud enough for everyone to hear that "this woman" is the reason her husband left her. Oh, please, she didn't even go with him.
Hugo asks Mili if Braulio has forbidden her to see him (of course not, no one "forbids" our plucky protagonista anything) since Braulio warned him that Mili might take advantage. Of what? Mili wonders. Money. Oops, wrong answer. Mili starts to tell him where he can stick his money. Mili says she hasn't been to see him because he's a liar and was trying to deceive her. She asks for his hands and pulls him out of the chair. He keeps up the pretense that he's paralyzed and falls to the floor. She gives him a few kicks and tells him to get up. Hugo tells her that the time she came in and he wasn't there it was because Braulio had taken him to the cemetery to see his mom and his girlfriend. And of course, he didn't take the motorized wheelchair because it's too big and too heavy. Now she feels bad and goes to see if he's ok. Damian and Braulio show up just then and Damian blames Mili and orders her out. Damian and Braulio pick Hugo up and put him back in the chair. Once they do and Mili leaves, Hugo tells Damian that Mili's his friend and that he doesn't want Damian to talk to her like that again. He tells them both it was an accident, he fell out of the chair, and tells Damian to get out. He tells Braulio to stay, though. Braulio says "So, she found out you can walk and now you want me to help you keep lying to her, right?" Yep.
Horacio comes to the runway show, but Rorgan tells him they can't get in without invitations. Rocky mentions that Valeria's friends were saying that some important designers were going to be there. Designers that "se les caían la mano" ("their hands fell"; judging from his hand gesture and the resultant hijinx, he means "gay"). Horacio calls him a genius and says they've got to get to a store before it closes.
Milagros comes to talk to Damian. She gives him the "be a better dad, encourage Hugo" pep talk. Damian doesn't think Hugo will listen to him. Mili tells him to yell until Hugo does listen.
Backstage, the gals are getting ready for the show. Their coach is upset because their hair isn't done yet and the girls say the stylists haven't gotten there yet.
Cut to the door, where Rorgan and Horacio are pretending to be famous stylists. Modeling Coach comes outside just then and gives the door guy a hard time for not letting them in, as they're urgently needed. Quick wardrobe rundown, Rorgan is wearing a baby blue hat, hot pink print shirt, white and silver belt, and bright blue pants tucked into pink cowboy boots; Horacio is wearing mirror sunglasses with pink frames, a dark purple fuzzy scarf, a white shirt with pink splotches on it, red pants, and red shoes. I know they're trying to telegraph "gay" but it looks more like "fashion challenged."
Mili goes back to Hugo's room asking what she needs to do for him to forgive her. Hugo wants Mili to pose for him, like the actress in Titanic. Of course, Mili's never seen it, so Hugo explains it…except for the part where she's posing nude.
Backstage, Horacio and Rorgan make a mess of some poor model's hair, claiming it's the latest style from Paris. Modeling Coach forbids Horacio from touching anyone else's hair. He tells them to move on to "the rest of the girls"…in other words, Valeria and her friends. Valeria claims that there's an outfit missing to distract Modeling Coach so she can pull Rorgan aside and fire him. She kicks him and Horacio out.
Mili, Lina, Karla, and Socorro are having dinner in the kitchen. Socorro is still ignoring Mili. Mili says she's going to be painted "like the woman in Titanic." Lina explains the naked part and Mili is scandalized.
The runway show commences, in slow-mo. The girls are all wearing lingerie (not "underwear" as previously advertised) and no one falls off the stage (awww, too bad). Rorgan and Horacio stand in the back and watch.
Mili confronts Hugo about the naked thing. Mili, that idiot, already promised to do it without knowing all the details. Hugo argues that it's "art," which yeah, it is, but that doesn't mean he's not also taking advantage of her. Mili says if he wants to paint her, she'll have clothes on. If he wants a naked model, go ask Karla. Hugo asks Mili if she's a virgin…for no reason, he's just asking. He figures she is, but he never explains why he asked in the first place. Mili says they're not friends anymore and leaves the room.
The next morning, Constancio gripes Luciana out because Valeria modeled after all, even though he told her not to. The two of them have an argument about "respect" and whether either of them taught Valeria what it means. Constancio warns Luciana that if she cheats on him again, something will happen to her. He asks if she knows how much insurance money he'll collect if she's run over by a car. Nasty.
Mili asks Regina about the whole naked painting thing…in general. Regina gives a PSA about art and the beauty of the female form. She shows Mili the painting, "La Venus del Espejo." Mili agrees it's a beautiful painting. Regina next shows Mili Goya's "La Maja Desnuda." Mili comments on the model's hips, which makes Regina laugh.
